Serving the Lord with all
humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which
befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews:
I served the Lord with
great humility and with tears, especially in the trials that came upon me through the plots of the Jews.
And when he had given him licence, Paul stood on the stairs, and
beckoned with the hand unto the people. And when there was made a
great silence, he spake unto them in the Hebrew tongue, saying,
Having received permission, Paul stood on the steps and motioned to the crowd. A
great hush came over the crowd, and he addressed them in Hebrew:
And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come
nigh unto Damascus about
noon, suddenly there
shone from heaven a
great light round about me.
About
noon as I was approaching Damascus, suddenly a bright light from heaven
flashed around me.
And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born.
“I paid a high price for my
citizenship,” said the commander. “But I was born a citizen,” Paul replied.
And there arose a
great cry: and the
scribes that were of the
Pharisees’ part arose, and
strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God.
A
great clamor arose, and some
scribes from the party of the
Pharisees got up and
contended sharply, “We find nothing wrong with this man. What if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?”
And when there arose a
great dissension, the chief captain, fearing lest Paul should have been pulled in pieces of them, commanded the soldiers to go down, and to take him by force from among them, and to bring him into the castle.
The dispute grew so violent that the commander was afraid they would
tear Paul to pieces. He ordered the soldiers to go down and remove him by force and bring him into the
barracks.
And they came to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a
great curse, that we will eat nothing until we have slain Paul.
They went to the chief priests and elders and said, “We have bound ourselves with a solemn oath not to eat anything until we have killed Paul.
And when he was called forth, Tertullus began to
accuse him, saying, Seeing that by thee we enjoy
great quietness, and that very worthy deeds are done unto this nation by thy providence,
When Paul had been called in, Tertullus opened the
prosecution: “Because of you, we have enjoyed a lasting peace, and your
foresight has brought improvements to this nation.
But the chief captain
Lysias came upon us, and with
great violence took him away out of our hands,
And on the
morrow, when
Agrippa was come, and
Bernice, with
great pomp, and was entered into the place of hearing, with the chief captains, and principal men of the city, at
Festus’ commandment Paul was brought forth.
The next day
Agrippa and
Bernice came with
great pomp and entered the
auditorium, along with the commanders and leading men of the city. And
Festus ordered that Paul be brought in.
Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come:
But I have had God’s help to this day, and I stand here to
testify to small and
great alike. I am saying nothing beyond what the prophets and Moses said would happen:
And as he thus spake for himself,
Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside
thyself; much learning
doth make thee
mad.
And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with
hurt and much damage, not only of the
lading and ship, but also of our lives.
“Men, I can see that our voyage will be filled with
disaster and
great loss, not only to ship and
cargo, but to our own lives as well.”
And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small
tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then taken away.
When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the
great storm continued to
batter us, we abandoned all hope of being saved.
Howbeit they looked when he should have
swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a
great while, and saw no
harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.
The islanders were expecting him to swell up or suddenly drop dead. But after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.
And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves.
That I have
great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart.
I have deep sorrow and unceasing
anguish in my heart.
What if God, willing to
shew his wrath, and to make his power known,
endured with much
longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:
What if God, intending to show His wrath and make His power known, bore with
great patience the vessels of His wrath, prepared for destruction?
Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their
fulness?
But if their
trespass means riches for the world, and their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much
greater riches will their fullness bring!
But now having no more place in these parts, and having a great desire these many years to come unto you;
But now that there are no further
opportunities for me in these regions, and since I have longed for many years to visit you,
That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in
whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also.
Welcome her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the saints, and assist her with anything she may need from you. For she has been a
great help to many people, including me.
If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a
great thing if we shall
reap your
carnal things?
If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much for us to
reap a material harvest from you?
And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we
bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant
comeliness.
and the parts we consider less honorable, we treat with
greater honor. And our unpresentable parts are treated with special
modesty,
For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked:
whereas our presentable parts have no such need. But God has composed the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it,
But
covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet
shew I unto you a more excellent way.
But eagerly desire the greater gifts. And now I will show you the most excellent way.
And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love; but the greatest of these is love.
I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye
prophesied: for
greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he
interpret, that the church may receive
edifying.
I wish that all of you could speak in tongues, but I would rather have you
prophesy. He who prophesies is
greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets so that the church may be
edified.
After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the
greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen
asleep.
After that, He appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen
asleep.
because a
great door for effective work has opened to me, even though many
oppose me.
As touching our brother Apollos, I greatly desired him to come unto you with the brethren: but his will was not at all to come at this time; but he will come when he shall have convenient time.
Now about our brother Apollos: I strongly urged him to go to you with the brothers. He was not at all inclined to go now, but he will go when he has the opportunity.
Who delivered us from so
great a death, and
doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;
He has delivered us from such a deadly
peril, and He will deliver us. In Him we have placed our hope that He will yet again deliver us,
For out of much
affliction and
anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be
grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.
For through many tears I wrote you out of
great distress and
anguish of heart, not to
grieve you but to let you know how much I love you.
For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious.
For if what was
fading away came with glory, how much
greater is the glory of that which endures!
Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech:
Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold.
Now we have this
treasure in jars of clay to show that this
surpassingly great power is from God and not from us.
Great is my boldness of speech toward you,
great is my glorying of you: I am filled with comfort, I am exceeding joyful in all our
tribulation.
Great is my confidence in you; great is my pride in you; I am filled with encouragement; in all our troubles my joy overflows.
And his inward affection is more abundant toward you, whilst he remembereth the obedience of you all, how with fear and
trembling ye received him.
And his affection for you is even
greater when he remembers that you were all
obedient as you
welcomed him with fear and
trembling.
How that in a
great trial of
affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their
liberality.
In the terrible
ordeal they suffered, their abundant joy and deep poverty overflowed into rich
generosity.
Providing for
honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.
For we are taking great care to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord, but also in the eyes of men.
And we have sent with them our brother, whom we have
oftentimes proved
diligent in many things, but now much more
diligent, upon the
great confidence which I have in you.
And we are sending along with them our brother whose earnestness has been
proven many times and in many ways, and now even more so by his
great confidence in you.
Not
boasting of things without our measure, that is, of other men’s labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly,
Neither do we
boast beyond our limits in the labors of others. But we hope that as your faith increases, our area of influence among you will
greatly increase as well,
Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
It is not surprising, then, if his servants
masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their actions.
And lest I should be
exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a
thorn in the flesh, the
messenger of
Satan to
buffet me, lest I should be
exalted above measure.
Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all
patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds.
The true marks of an apostle—signs, wonders, and miracles—were performed among you with
great perseverance.
And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,
and the
surpassing greatness of His power to us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of His mighty strength,
But God, who is rich in mercy, for his
great love
wherewith he loved us,
But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,
This is a
great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
This
mystery is profound, but I am speaking about Christ and the church.
For God is my record, how
greatly I long after you all in the
bowels of Jesus Christ.
God is my witness how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.
And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing
confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.
And most of the brothers,
confident in the Lord by my chains, now
dare more
greatly to speak the word without fear.
Receive him therefore in the Lord with all
gladness; and hold such in reputation:
Welcome him in the Lord with
great joy, and honor men like him,
But I
rejoiced in the Lord
greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity.
Now I
rejoice greatly in the Lord that at last you have revived your
concern for me. You were indeed concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it.
For I would that ye knew what
great conflict I have for you, and for them at
Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh;
For I want you to know how much I am struggling for you and for those at
Laodicea, and for all who have not met me face to face,
For I bear him record, that he hath a
great zeal for you, and them that are in
Laodicea, and them in
Hierapolis.
For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.
because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power, in the Holy Spirit, and with great conviction—just as you know we lived among you for your sake.
And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much
affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost:
And you became imitators of us and of the Lord when you
welcomed the message with the joy of the Holy Spirit, in spite of your
great suffering.
But we, brethren, being taken from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavoured the more abundantly to see your face with great desire.
Brothers, although we were
torn away from you for a short time (in person, not in heart), our desire to see you face to face was even more intense.
But now when
Timotheus came from you unto us, and brought us good
tidings of your faith and charity, and that ye have good
remembrance of us always, desiring
greatly to see us, as we also to see you:
But just now,
Timothy has returned from his visit with the good news about your faith, your love, and the fond
memories you have preserved, longing to see us just as we long to see you.
For what
thanks can we render to God again for you, for all the joy
wherewith we joy for your sakes before our God;
How can we adequately
thank God for you in return for our
great joy over you in His presence?
For they that have used the office of a
deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and
great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
For those who have served well as deacons acquire for themselves a high standing and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.
And without controversy
great is the
mystery of
godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
By common confession, the
mystery of
godliness is
great: He appeared in the flesh, was
vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was proclaimed among the nations, was believed in throughout the world, was taken up in glory.
But
godliness with contentment is
great gain.
Of course,
godliness with contentment is
great gain.
Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;
Recalling your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy.
But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.
A large house contains not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay. Some indeed are for honorable use, but others are for common use.
Alexander the
coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works:
Alexander the
coppersmith did
great harm to me. The Lord will repay him according to his deeds.
Of whom be thou ware also; for he hath
greatly withstood our words.
You too should
beware of him, for he has vigorously opposed our message.
Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
as we
await the blessed hope and glorious appearance of our
great God and
Savior Jesus Christ.
For we have
great joy and
consolation in thy love, because the
bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother.
I take great joy and encouragement in your love, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the saints.
How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
how shall we escape if we neglect such a
great salvation? This salvation was first
announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard Him,
For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.
For Jesus has been counted worthy of greater glory than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself.
Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
Therefore, since we have a
great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we
profess.
For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could
swear by no
greater, he
sware by himself,
When God made His promise to Abraham, since He had no one
greater to
swear by, He
swore by Himself,
Men
swear by someone
greater than themselves, and their oath serves as a
confirmation to end all argument.
Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils.
Consider how
great Melchizedek was: Even the patriarch Abraham gave him a tenth of the
plunder.
And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.
No longer will each one teach his
neighbor or his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know Me, from the least of them to the
greatest.
But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;
But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that have come, He went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made by hands and is not a part of this creation.
And having an high priest over the house of God;
and since we have a great priest over the house of God,
Remember the early days that you were in the light. In those days, you
endured a
great conflict in the face of suffering.
Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward.
So do not throw away your confidence; it holds a great reward.
Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.
He valued disgrace for Christ above the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking
ahead to his reward.
Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so
great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which
doth so easily
beset us, and let us run with
patience the race that is set before us,
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a
great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off every
encumbrance and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with
endurance the race set out for us.
Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that
great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the
everlasting covenant,
Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that
great Shepherd of the sheep,
My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the
greater condemnation.
Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.
Behold also the ships, which though they be so
great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small
helm,
whithersoever the governor listeth.
Consider ships as well. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are
steered by a very small
rudder wherever the
pilot is inclined.
Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
In the same way, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it boasts of
great things. Consider how small a
spark sets a
great forest
ablaze.
Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be
healed. The
effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
Therefore
confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be
healed. The prayer of a righteous man has
great power to prevail.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath
begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
In this you
greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in various trials
But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a
meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of
great price.
but from the inner disposition of your heart, the
unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in God’s sight.
Whereby are given unto us exceeding
great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through
lust.
Through these He has given us His precious and magnificent promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, now that you have escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
Whereas angels, which are
greater in power and might, bring not railing
accusation against them before the Lord.
Yet not even angels, though
greater in strength and power,
dare to bring such
slanderous charges against them before the Lord.
For when they speak
great swelling words of vanity, they
allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much
wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.
With lofty but empty words, they appeal to the
sensual passions of the flesh and
entice those who are just escaping from others who live in error.
But the day of the Lord will come as a
thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a
great noise, and the elements shall
melt with
fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
But the Day of the Lord will come like a
thief. The heavens will disappear with a
roar, the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and its works will be laid bare.
For if our heart
condemn us, God is
greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
Even if our hearts
condemn us, God is
greater than our hearts, and He knows all things.
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
You, little children, are from God and have overcome them, because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.
If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is
greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath
testified of his Son.
Even if we accept human testimony, the testimony of God is greater. For this is the testimony that God has given about His Son.
I
rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.
I was overjoyed to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father has commanded us.
For I
rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and
testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.
For I was overjoyed when the brothers came and
testified about your devotion to the truth, in which you continue to walk.
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
