I will be
glad and
rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in
adversities;
And hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: thou hast set my feet in a large room.
You have not delivered me to the enemy; You have set my feet in the open.
Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in trouble: mine eye is consumed with grief,
yea, my soul and my
belly.
Be
merciful to me, O LORD, for I am in distress; my eyes fail from sorrow, my soul and body as well.
For I
have heard the
slander of many: fear was on every side: while they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life.
For I hear the
slander of many; there is terror on every side. They
conspire against me and plot to take my life.
Let me not be
ashamed, O LORD; for I
have called upon thee: let the wicked be
ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave.
O LORD, let me not be
ashamed, for I
have called on You. Let the wicked be put to shame; let them lie silent in
Sheol.
Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men!
How great is Your goodness which You have laid up for those who fear You, which You have bestowed before the sons of men on those who take refuge in You!
I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity
have I not
hid. I said, I will
confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin.
Selah.
Then I acknowledged my sin to You and did not hide my iniquity. I said, “I will
confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and You
forgave the guilt of my sin.
Selah Be ye not as the horse, or as the
mule, which
have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with
bit and
bridle, lest they come near unto thee.
Do not be like the horse or
mule, which
have no understanding; they must be
controlled with
bit and
bridle to make them come to you.
For our heart shall
rejoice in him, because we
have trusted in his holy name.
For our hearts
rejoice in Him, since we trust in His holy name.
For without cause
have they
hid for me their net in a pit, which without cause they
have digged for my soul.
For without cause they laid their net for me; without reason they
dug a pit for my soul.
Yea, they opened their mouth wide against me, and said,
Aha,
aha, our eye hath seen it.
They
gape at me and say, “
Aha,
aha! Our eyes
have seen!”
This thou hast seen, O LORD: keep not silence: O Lord, be not far from me.
O LORD, You have seen it; be not silent. O Lord, be not far from me.
Let them not say in their hearts,
Ah, so would we
have it: let them not say, We
have swallowed him up.
Let them not say in their hearts, “
Aha, just what we wanted!” Let them not say, “We
have swallowed him up!”
The wicked
have drawn out the sword, and
have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and
needy, and to
slay such as be of upright conversation.
The wicked
have drawn the sword and bent the bow to bring down the poor and
needy, to
slay those whose ways are upright.
I
have been young, and now am old; yet
have I not seen the righteous
forsaken, nor his seed
begging bread.
I once was young and now am old, yet never
have I seen the righteous abandoned or their children
begging for bread.
I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree.
I
have seen a wicked,
ruthless man flourishing like a well-rooted native tree,
For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presseth me
sore.
For Your arrows have pierced me deeply, and Your hand has pressed down on me.
For mine
iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me.
I am feeble and
sore broken: I
have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart.
Behold, thou hast made my days as an
handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee:
verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity.
Selah.
You, indeed,
have made my days as handbreadths, and my lifetime as nothing before You. Truly each man at his best exists as but a breath.
Selah I was
dumb, I opened not my mouth; because thou
didst it.
I
have become
mute; I do not open my mouth because of what You
have done.
Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.
Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders You
have done, and the plans You
have for us— none can compare to You— if I
proclaim and declare them, they are more than I can count.
Sacrifice and offering thou
didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.
Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but my ears You have opened. Burnt offerings and sin offerings You did not require.
Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me,
Then I said, “Here I am, I
have come— it is written about me in the
scroll:
I
have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I
have not
refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest.
I
proclaim righteousness in the great assembly; behold, I do not seal my lips, as You, O LORD, do know.
I
have not
hid thy righteousness within my heart; I
have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I
have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation.
I have not covered up Your righteousness in my heart; I have declared Your faithfulness and salvation; I have not concealed Your loving devotion and faithfulness from the great assembly.
For innumerable evils
have compassed me about: mine
iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth me.
For evils without number
surround me; my sins
have overtaken me, so that I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart has failed within me.
My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?
My tears have been my food both day and night, while men ask me all day long, “Where is your God?”
Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.
Deep calls to deep in the
roar of Your waterfalls; all Your breakers and waves
have rolled over me.
I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I
mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?
I say to God my Rock, “Why have You forgotten me? Why must I walk in sorrow because of the enemy’s oppression?”
For thou art the God of my strength: why
dost thou cast me off? why go I
mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?
For You are the God of my refuge. Why have You rejected me? Why must I walk in sorrow because of the enemy’s oppression?
We
have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers
have told us, what work thou
didst in their days, in the times of old.
We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us the work You did in their days, in the days of old.
In God we
boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever.
Selah.
But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies.
But You have rejected and humbled us; You no longer go forth with our armies.
Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which
hate us
spoil for themselves.
Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scattered us among the heathen.
You
have given us up as sheep to be
devoured; You
have scattered us among the nations.
Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a
scorn and a
derision to them that are round about us.
You
have made us a reproach to our neighbors, a
mockery and
derision to those around us.
Thou makest us a
byword among the heathen, a
shaking of the head among the people.
All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.
All this has come upon us, though we
have not forgotten You or
betrayed Your covenant.
Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way;
Our hearts
have not turned back; our steps
have not
strayed from Your path.
Though thou hast
sore broken us in the place of
dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death.
But You
have crushed us in the
lair of jackals; You
have covered us with deepest darkness.
If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god;
If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.
would not God have discovered, since He knows the secrets of the heart?
My heart is
inditing a good matter: I speak of the things which I
have made touching the king: my tongue is the pen of a ready writer.
My heart is
stirred by a noble
theme as I
recite my verses to the king; my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer.
Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath
anointed thee with the oil of
gladness above thy fellows.
You
have loved righteousness and
hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has
anointed you above your companions with the oil of joy.
All thy garments smell of
myrrh, and
aloes, and
cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they
have made thee
glad.
The princes of the people are gathered together, even the people of the God of Abraham: for the shields of the earth belong unto God: he is greatly
exalted.
The nobles of the nations
have assembled as the people of the God of Abraham; for the shields of the earth belong to God; He is highly
exalted.
As we
have heard, so
have we seen in the city of the LORD of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establish it for ever.
Selah.
As we
have heard, so we
have seen in the city of the LORD of Hosts, in the city of our God: God will establish her
forever.
Selah We have thought of thy lovingkindness, O God, in the midst of thy temple.
Within Your temple, O God, we
contemplate Your loving devotion.
Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall
have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall
consume in the grave from their dwelling.
Like sheep they are destined for
Sheol. Death will be their
shepherd. The upright will rule them in the morning, and their form will decay in
Sheol, far from their lofty abode.
Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.
“Gather to Me My saints, who made a covenant with Me by sacrifice.”
I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices or thy burnt offerings, to have been continually before me.
I do not
rebuke you for your sacrifices, and your burnt offerings are ever before Me.
I will take no
bullock out of thy house, nor he goats out of thy folds.
I
have no need for a bull from your
stall or goats from your pens,
But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth?
To the wicked, however, God says, “What right
have you to
recite My statutes and to bear My covenant on your lips?
These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as
thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes.
You
have done these things, and I kept silent; you thought I was just like you. But now I
rebuke you and
accuse you to your face.
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender
mercies blot out my transgressions.
Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your loving devotion; according to Your great
compassion,
blot out my transgressions.
Against thee, thee only,
have I
sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
Against You, You only,
have I
sinned and done what is evil in Your sight, so that You may be proved right when You speak and
blameless when You judge.
Make me to hear joy and
gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may
rejoice.
I will praise thee for ever, because thou hast done it: and I will wait on thy name; for it is good before thy saints.
I will praise You
forever, because You
have done it. I will wait on Your name— for it is good— in the presence of Your saints.
The
fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and
have done
abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good.
The
fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt; their ways are
vile. There is no one who does good.
Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become
filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
All have turned away, they have together become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one.
Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread: they have not called upon God.
Will the workers of iniquity never learn? They
devour my people like bread; they refuse to call upon God.
For strangers are risen up against me, and oppressors seek after my soul: they
have not set God before them.
Selah.
For strangers rise up against me, and
ruthless men seek my life— men with no regard for God.
Selah For he hath delivered me out of all trouble: and mine eye hath seen his desire upon mine enemies.
For He has delivered me from every trouble, and my eyes have stared down my foes.
Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues: for I
have seen violence and
strife in the city.
For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could
have borne it: neither was it he that
hated me that did
magnify himself against me; then I would
have hid myself from him:
For it is not an enemy who insults me; that I could
endure. It is not a
foe who rises against me; from him I could hide.
God shall hear, and
afflict them, even he that abideth of old.
Selah. Because they
have no changes, therefore they fear not God.
God will hear and
humiliate them— the One enthroned for the ages—
Selah because they do not change and they
have no fear of God.
In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.
In God, whose word I praise— in God I trust. I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?
Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy
bottle: are they not in thy book?
You
have taken account of my wanderings. Put my tears in Your
bottle— are they not in Your book?
In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.
in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?
For thou hast delivered my soul from death:
wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?
For You
have delivered my soul from death, and my feet from
stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.
Be
merciful unto me, O God, be
merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee:
yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these
calamities be overpast.
Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy, for in You my soul takes refuge. In the shadow of Your wings I will take shelter until the danger has passed.
They
have prepared a net for my steps; my soul is bowed down: they
have digged a pit before me, into the midst
whereof they are fallen themselves.
Selah.
They spread a net for my feet; my soul was
despondent. They
dug a pit before me, but they themselves
have fallen into it!
Selah But thou, O LORD, shalt
laugh at them; thou shalt
have all the heathen in
derision.
But You, O LORD,
laugh at them; You
scoff at all the nations.
O God, thou hast cast us off, thou hast scattered us, thou hast been displeased; O turn
thyself to us again.
You
have rejected us, O God; You
have broken us; You
have been
angry; restore us!
Thou hast made the earth to
tremble; thou hast broken it:
heal the breaches thereof; for it shaketh.
Thou hast shewed thy people hard things: thou hast made us to drink the wine of
astonishment.
You
have shown Your people
hardship; we are
staggered from the wine You made us drink.
Thou hast given a
banner to them that fear thee, that it may be displayed because of the truth.
Selah.
You
have raised a
banner for those who fear You, that they may
flee the bow.
Selah Wilt not thou, O God, which hadst cast us off? and thou, O God, which
didst not go out with our armies?
Have You not rejected us, O God? Will You no longer march out, O God, with our armies?
For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.
For You have been my refuge, a tower of strength against the enemy.
For thou, O God, hast heard my vows: thou hast given me the
heritage of those that fear thy name.
For You have heard my vows, O God; You have given me the inheritance reserved for those who fear Your name.
God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.
God has spoken once; I have heard this twice: that power belongs to God,
To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.
So I
have seen You in the sanctuary and
beheld Your power and glory.
They
devise injustice and say, “We
have perfected a secret plan.” For the inner man and the heart are
mysterious.
For thou, O God, hast proved us: thou hast tried us, as silver is tried.
For You, O God, have tested us; You have refined us like silver.
Which my lips have uttered, and my mouth hath spoken, when I was in trouble.
the vows that my lips promised and my mouth spoke in my distress.
If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:
Though ye
have lien among the pots, yet shall ye be as the wings of a
dove covered with silver, and her feathers with yellow gold.
Though you lie down among the sheepfolds, the wings of the
dove are covered with silver, and her feathers with
shimmering gold.”
Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity
captive: thou hast received gifts for men;
yea, for the
rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them.
You
have ascended on high; You
have led
captives away. You
have received gifts from men, even from the
rebellious, that the LORD God may dwell there.
They have seen thy goings, O God; even the goings of my God, my King, in the sanctuary.
They
have seen Your
procession, O God— the march of my God and King into the sanctuary.
Thy God hath commanded thy strength:
strengthen, O God, that which thou hast wrought for us.
Summon Your power, O God; show Your strength, O God, which You
have exerted on our behalf.
I sink in deep
mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.
I
have sunk into the
miry depths, where there is no footing; I
have drifted into deep waters, where the flood engulfs me.
Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; shame hath covered my face.
For I
have endured scorn for Your sake, and shame has covered my face.
I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an
alien unto my mother’s children.
I have become a stranger to my brothers and a foreigner to my mother’s sons,
For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.
because zeal for Your house has consumed me, and the insults of those who
insult You
have fallen on me.
Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of
heaviness: and I looked for some to take
pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.
Insults
have broken my heart, and I am in
despair. I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found no one.
Let their table become a
snare before them: and that which should
have been for their
welfare, let it become a
trap.
For God will save
Zion, and will build the cities of Judah: that they may dwell there, and
have it in possession.
For God will save
Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah, that they may dwell there and possess it.
In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion.
In You, O LORD, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame.
