For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.
For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.
Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.
Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight; everything is uncovered and exposed before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
Therefore, since we
have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we
profess.
For we
have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our
infirmities; but was in all points
tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
For we do not
have a high priest who is unable to
sympathize with our weaknesses, but we
have one who was
tempted in every way that we are, yet was without sin.
Who can
have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with
infirmity.
He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and misguided, since he himself is
beset by weakness.
So also Christ
glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day
have I
begotten thee.
So also Christ did not take upon Himself the glory of becoming a high priest, but He was called by the One who said to Him: “You are My Son;
today I
have become Your Father.”
Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.
We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain, because you are dull of hearing.
For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
Although by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to reteach you the
basic principles of God’s word. You need milk, not solid food!
But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use
have their senses exercised to
discern both good and evil.
But solid food is for the
mature, who by constant use
have trained their senses to distinguish good from evil.
For it is impossible for those who were once
enlightened, and
have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
It is impossible for those who
have once been
enlightened, who
have tasted the heavenly gift, who
have shared in the Holy Spirit,
And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age—
If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto
repentance; seeing they
crucify to themselves the Son of God
afresh, and put him to an open shame.
and then
have fallen away—to be restored to
repentance, because they themselves are
crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting Him to open shame.
For God is not unrighteous to
forget your work and labour of love, which ye
have shewed toward his name, in that ye
have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
For God is not unjust. He will not
forget your work and the love you
have shown for His name as you
have ministered to the saints and continue to do so.
That by two
immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might
have a strong
consolation, who
have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:
Thus by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be strongly encouraged.
Which hope we
have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and
stedfast, and which entereth into that within the
veil;
We
have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the
curtain,
And
verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood,
have a commandment to take
tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham:
Now the law commands the sons of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people—that is, from their brothers—though they too are descended from Abraham.
If therefore perfection were by the
Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?
Now if perfection could
have been attained through the
Levitical priesthood (for on this basis the people received the law), why was there still need for another priest to appear—one in the order of
Melchizedek and not in the order of Aaron?
And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death:
Now there have been many other priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office.
For the law maketh men high priests which
have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for
evermore.
For the law appoints as high priests men who are weak; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect
forever.
Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;
The point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven,
For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer.
And since every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices, it was necessary for this One also to have something to offer.
For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.
For if that first covenant had been without fault, no place would have been sought for a second.
But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;
But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that have come, He went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made by hands and is not a part of this creation.
For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
Otherwise, Christ would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But now He has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of Himself.
For then would they not
have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once
purged should
have had no more conscience of sins.
If it could, would not the offerings
have ceased? For the worshipers would
have been
cleansed once for all, and would no longer
have felt the guilt of their sins.
Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.
Then I said, ‘Here I am, it is written about Me in the
scroll: I
have come to do Your will, O God.’”
Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
Then He adds, “Here I am, I have come to do Your will.” He takes away the first to establish the second.
By the which will we are
sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
And by that will, we
have been
sanctified through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.
And where these
have been
forgiven, an offering for sin is no longer needed.
Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,
Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus,
And having an high priest over the house of God;
and since we have a great priest over the house of God,
Not
forsaking the
assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but
exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
Let us not neglect meeting together, as some
have made a habit, but let us
encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
For if we sin
wilfully after that we
have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
If we
deliberately go on
sinning after we
have received the knowledge of the truth, no further sacrifice for sins remains,
For ye
have need of
patience, that, after ye
have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.
You need to
persevere, so that after you
have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised.
Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.
But My righteous one will live by faith; and if he shrinks back, I will take no pleasure in him.”
But we are not of them who draw back unto
perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.
But we are not of those who
shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who
have faith and preserve their souls.
And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.
If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return.
Ye
have not yet resisted unto blood,
striving against sin.
In your struggle against sin, you
have not yet resisted to the point of
shedding your blood.
And you
have forgotten the
exhortation that addresses you as sons: “My son, do not take lightly the discipline of the Lord, and do not lose heart when He rebukes you.
Furthermore we
have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?
Furthermore, we
have all had earthly fathers who disciplined us, and we respected them. Should we not much more submit to the Father of our spirits and live?
Now no
chastening for the present seemeth to be
joyous, but
grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.
No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields a harvest of righteousness and peace to those who have been trained by it.
For ye know how that afterward, when he would
have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of
repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
For you know that afterward, when he wanted to
inherit the blessing, he was rejected. He could find no ground for
repentance, though he sought the blessing with tears.
For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and
tempest,
For you
have not come to a mountain that can be touched and that is burning with fire; to darkness,
gloom, and storm;
But ye are come unto mount
Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
Instead, you
have come to Mount
Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You
have come to myriads of angels
To the general assembly and church of the
firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
in joyful assembly, to the congregation of the
firstborn,
enrolled in heaven. You
have come to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,
Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us
have grace, whereby we may serve God
acceptably with reverence and godly fear:
Be not
forgetful to
entertain strangers: for thereby some
have entertained angels unawares.
Do not neglect to show
hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people
have entertained angels without knowing it.
Let your conversation be without
covetousness; and be content with such things as ye
have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor
forsake thee.
Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you
have, for God has said: “Never will I leave you, never will I
forsake you.”
Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.
Remember your leaders who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and
imitate their faith.
Be not carried about with
divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which
have not profited them that
have been occupied therein.
Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace and not by foods of no value to those devoted to them.
We
have an altar,
whereof they
have no right to eat which serve the tabernacle.
We have an altar from which those who serve at the tabernacle have no right to eat.
For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.
For here we do not have a permanent city, but we are looking for the city that is to come.
Obey them that
have the rule over you, and submit
yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.
Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch over your souls as those who must give an account. To this end, allow them to lead with joy and not with grief, for that would be of no advantage to you.
Pray for us: for we trust we
have a good conscience, in all things willing to live
honestly.
Pray for us; we are
convinced that we
have a clear conscience and desire to live
honorably in every way.
And I
beseech you, brethren, suffer the word of
exhortation: for I
have written a letter unto you in few words.
I
urge you, brothers, to bear with my word of
exhortation, for I
have only written to you briefly.
Salute all them that
have the rule over you, and all the saints. They of Italy
salute you.
Greet all your leaders and all the saints. Those from Italy send you greetings.
But let
patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
Allow
perseverance to finish its work, so that you may be
mature and complete, not lacking anything.
My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.
My brothers, as you hold out your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, do not show
favoritism.
And ye
have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my
footstool:
If you
lavish attention on the man in fine clothes and say, “Here is a seat of honor,” but say to the poor man, “You must stand” or “Sit at my feet,”
Are ye not then partial in
yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?
But ye
have despised the poor. Do not rich men
oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?
But you
have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who
oppress you and
drag you into court?
Do not they
blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?
Are they not the ones who
blaspheme the noble name by which you
have been called?
But if ye
have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are
convinced of the law as transgressors.
For he that said, Do not commit
adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no
adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a
transgressor of the law.
For He who said, “Do not commit
adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” If you do not commit
adultery, but do commit murder, you
have become a
lawbreaker.
For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.
For judgment without mercy will be shown to
anyone who has not been
merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
What
doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and
have not works? can faith save him?
What good is it, my brothers, if someone claims to have faith, but has no deeds? Can such faith save him?
Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I
have works:
shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will
shew thee my faith by my works.
But someone will say, “You have faith and I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.
For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is
tamed, and hath been
tamed of mankind:
All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and creatures of the sea are being
tamed and
have been
tamed by man,
With the tongue we
bless our Lord and Father, and with it we
curse men, who
have been made in God’s likeness.
But if ye
have bitter
envying and
strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
But if you
harbor bitter jealousy and
selfish ambition in your hearts, do not
boast in it or deny the truth.
Ye
lust, and
have not: ye kill, and desire to
have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye
have not, because ye ask not.
You
crave what you do not
have; you kill and
covet, but are unable to obtain it. You quarrel and fight. You do not
have, because you do not ask.
Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are
motheaten.
Your riches
have rotted and
moths have eaten your clothes.
Your gold and silver is
cankered; and the
rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye
have heaped treasure together for the last days.
Behold, the
hire of the labourers who
have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by
fraud, crieth: and the
cries of them which
have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of
sabaoth.
Look, the wages you
withheld from the workmen who
mowed your fields are crying out against you. The
cries of the harvesters
have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts.
Ye
have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been
wanton; ye
have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter.
Ye
have condemned and killed the just; and he
doth not resist you.
You have condemned and murdered the righteous, who did not resist you.
Take, my brethren, the prophets, who
have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering
affliction, and of
patience.
Brothers, as an example of
patience in
affliction, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
Behold, we count them happy which
endure. Ye
have heard of the
patience of Job, and
have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very
pitiful, and of tender mercy.
See how blessed we consider those who
have persevered. You
have heard of Job’s
perseverance and
have seen the outcome from the Lord. The Lord is full of
compassion and mercy.
And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he
have committed sins, they shall be
forgiven him.
And the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick. The Lord will raise him up. If he has
sinned, he will be
forgiven.
In this you greatly
rejoice, though now for a little while you may
have had to suffer grief in various trials
Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye
rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:
Though you
have not seen Him, you love Him; and though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and
rejoice with an inexpressible and glorious joy,
Of which salvation the prophets
have enquired and searched
diligently, who
prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:
Concerning this salvation, the prophets who
foretold the grace to come to you searched and investigated carefully,
Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.
It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, when they
foretold the things now
announced by those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.
Seeing ye
have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto
unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart
fervently:
Since you
have purified your souls by obedience to the truth so that you
have a genuine love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from a pure heart.
Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
For you
have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and
enduring word of God.
If so be ye
have tasted that the Lord is
gracious.
now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
For ye were as sheep going
astray; but are now returned unto the
Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
For the time past of our life may suffice us to
have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in
lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and
abominable idolatries:
Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.
But they will have to give an account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.
And above all things
have fervent charity among
yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.
Above all, love one another deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye
have suffered a while, make you perfect,
stablish,
strengthen, settle you.
And after you
have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself restore you, secure you,
strengthen you, and establish you.
By
Silvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I suppose, I
have written briefly,
exhorting, and
testifying that this is the true grace of God wherein ye stand.
Through
Silvanus, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I
have written to you briefly,
encouraging you and
testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it.
Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:
Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through the righteousness of our God and
Savior Jesus Christ
have received a faith as precious as ours:
Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through
lust.
Through these He has given us His precious and magnificent promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, now that you have escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
Wherefore I will not be
negligent to put you always in
remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.
Therefore I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are established in the truth you now have.
Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my
decease to
have these things always in
remembrance.
And I will make every effort to
ensure that after my departure, you will be able to recall these things at all times.
For we
have not followed
cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
For we did not follow
cleverly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.
We
have also a more sure word of prophecy;
whereunto ye do well that ye take
heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day
dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
We also
have the word of the prophets as confirmed beyond doubt. And you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a lamp
shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
