For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,
being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might so that you may
have full
endurance and
patience, and
joyfully And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the
firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might
have the preeminence.
And He is the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning and
firstborn from among the dead, so that in all things He may
have preeminence.
For it pleased the Father that in him should all
fulness dwell;
For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him,
If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye
have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven;
whereof I Paul am made a minister;
if indeed you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope of the gospel you heard, which has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.
For I would that ye knew what great conflict I
have for you, and for them at
Laodicea, and for as many as
have not seen my face in the flesh;
For I want you to know how much I am struggling for you and for those at
Laodicea, and for all who
have not met me face to face,
As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:
Therefore, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to walk in Him,
Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye
have been taught, abounding therein with
thanksgiving.
rooted and built up in Him, established in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with
thankfulness.
And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
And you have been made complete in Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.
Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,
If you have died with Christ to the spiritual forces of the world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its regulations:
Which things
have indeed a
shew of wisdom in will worship, and
humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.
Such restrictions indeed
have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-prescribed worship, their false
humility, and their harsh treatment of the body; but they are of no value against the
indulgence of the flesh.
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
Therefore, since you
have been raised with Christ,
strive for the things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.
Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
Do not lie to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its practices,
And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
and
have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its
Creator.
Forbearing one another, and
forgiving one another, if any man
have a quarrel against any: even as Christ
forgave you, so also do ye.
Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.
Masters, supply your slaves with what is right and fair, since you know that you also have a Master in heaven.
Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that he might know your estate, and comfort your hearts;
I
have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know about us, and that he may
encourage your hearts.
Aristarchus my fellowprisoner saluteth you, and
Marcus, sister’s son to
Barnabas, (touching whom ye received commandments: if he come unto you, receive him;)
My fellow prisoner
Aristarchus sends you greetings, as does Mark the cousin of
Barnabas. You
have already received instructions about him: If he comes to you,
welcome him.
And Jesus, which is called Justus, who are of the
circumcision. These only are my fellow workers unto the kingdom of God, which
have been a comfort unto me.
Jesus, who is called Justus, also sends greetings. These are the only Jews among my fellow workers for the kingdom of God, and they have been a comfort to me.
And say to Archippus, Take
heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fulfil it.
Tell Archippus: “See to it that you complete the ministry you have received in the Lord.”
As a result, you
have become an example to all the believers in
Macedonia and
Achaia.
For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in
Macedonia and
Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing.
For not only did the message of the Lord ring out from you to
Macedonia and
Achaia, but your faith in God has gone out to every place, so that we
have no need to say anything more.
Nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might
have been
burdensome, as the apostles of Christ.
Nor did we seek praise from you or from
anyone else, although as apostles of Christ we had authority to demand it.
So being
affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to
have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were
dear unto us.
We cared so deeply that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God, but our own lives as well. That is how beloved you have become to us.
For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews:
For you, brothers, became imitators of the churches of God in
Judea that are in Christ Jesus. You suffered from your own countrymen the very things they suffered from the Jews,
Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and
have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men:
who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and drove us out as well. They are displeasing to God and hostile to all men,
Wherefore we would
have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but
Satan hindered us.
For we wanted to come to you—indeed I, Paul, tried again and again—but
Satan obstructed us.
For this cause, when I could no longer
forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the
tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.
For this reason, when I could bear it no longer, I sent to find out about your faith, for fear that the
tempter had
somehow tempted you and caused our labor to be in vain.
But now when
Timotheus came from you unto us, and brought us good
tidings of your faith and charity, and that ye
have good
remembrance of us always, desiring greatly to see us, as we also to see you:
But just now,
Timothy has returned from his visit with the good news about your faith, your love, and the fond
memories you
have preserved, longing to see us just as we long to see you.
Therefore, brethren, we were comforted over you in all our
affliction and distress by your faith:
For this reason, brothers, in all our distress and persecution, we
have been
reassured about you, because of your faith.
Furthermore then we
beseech you, brethren, and
exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye
have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.
Finally, brothers, we ask and
encourage you in the Lord Jesus to live in a way that is pleasing to God, just as you
have received from us. This is how you already live, so you should do so all the more.
and no one should ever
violate or
exploit his brother in this regard, because the Lord will
avenge all such acts, as we
have already told you and solemnly
warned you.
But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye
yourselves are taught of God to love one another.
Now about brotherly love, you do not need
anyone to write to you, because you
yourselves have been taught by God to love one another.
That ye may walk
honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may
have lack of nothing.
Then you will
behave properly toward outsiders, without being dependent on
anyone.
But I would not
have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are
asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which
have no hope.
Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you will not
grieve like the rest, who are without hope.
For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, we also believe that God will bring with Jesus those who
have fallen
asleep in Him.
For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are
asleep.
By the word of the Lord, we declare to you that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means
precede those who
have fallen
asleep.
But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.
Now about the times and seasons, brothers, we do not need to write to you.
I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren.
I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers.
When he shall come to be
glorified in his saints, and to be
admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.
on the day He comes to be
glorified in His saints and regarded with wonder by all who
have believed, including you who
have believed our testimony.
And with all
deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
and with every wicked
deception directed against those who are perishing, because they refused the love of the truth that would
have saved them.
That they all might be
damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
in order that judgment may come upon all who have disbelieved the truth and delighted in wickedness.
Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.
Therefore, brothers, stand firm and
cling to the traditions we taught you, whether by speech or by letter.
Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may
have free course, and be
glorified, even as it is with you:
Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may spread quickly and be held in honor, just as it was with you.
And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.
And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men; for not
everyone holds to the faith.
And we have confidence in the Lord touching you, that ye both do and will do the things which we command you.
And we have confidence in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do what we command.
Not because we
have not power, but to make ourselves an
ensample unto you to follow us.
Not that we lack this right, but we wanted to offer ourselves as an example for you to
imitate.
And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and
have no company with him, that he may be
ashamed.
Take note of
anyone who does not obey the instructions we
have given in this letter. Do not associate with him, so that he may be
ashamed.
Some
have strayed from these ways and turned aside to empty talk.
According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.
that agrees with the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.
Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith
have made
shipwreck:
holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some
have rejected and thereby
shipwrecked their faith.
Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I
have delivered unto
Satan, that they may learn not to
blaspheme.
Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I
have handed over to
Satan to be taught not to
blaspheme.
Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
who wants
everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Moreover he must
have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the
snare of the devil.
Furthermore, he must
have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the
snare of the devil.
For they that
have used the office of a
deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
For those who have served well as deacons acquire for themselves a high standing and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.
If thou put the brethren in
remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ,
nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine,
whereunto thou hast attained.
By pointing out these things to the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus,
nourished by the words of faith and sound instruction that you
have followed.
For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.
To this end we labor and
strive, because we
have set our hope on the living God, who is the
Savior of
everyone, and especially of those who believe.
But if any widow
have children or nephews, let them learn first to
shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.
But if a widow has children or grandchildren, they must first learn to show
godliness to their own family and repay their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God.
Well reported of for good works; if she
have brought up children, if she
have lodged strangers, if she
have washed the saints’ feet, if she
have relieved the
afflicted, if she
have diligently followed every good work.
and well known for good deeds such as bringing up children,
entertaining strangers, washing the feet of the saints, imparting relief to the
afflicted, and
devoting herself to every good work.
But the younger widows refuse: for when they
have begun to wax
wanton against Christ, they will marry;
But refuse to
enroll younger widows. For when their passions draw them away from Christ, they will want to marry,
Having
damnation, because they
have cast off their first faith.
and thus will
incur judgment because they are setting aside their first faith.
I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the
adversary to speak
reproachfully.
For some are already turned aside after
Satan.
For some
have already turned aside to follow
Satan.
If any man or woman that believeth
have widows, let them
relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may
relieve them that are widows indeed.
If any believing woman has dependent widows, she must assist them and not allow the church to be burdened, so that it can help the widows who are truly in need.
And they that
have believing masters, let them not
despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and
exhort.
Those who
have believing masters should not show disrespect because they are brothers, but should serve them all the more, since those receiving their good service are beloved believers. Teach and
encourage these principles.
But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these.
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some
coveted after, they
have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. By
craving it, some
have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.
which some
have professed and thus
swerved away from the faith. Grace be with you all.
I
thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I
have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;
I
thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience as did my forefathers, as I constantly remember you night and day in my prayers.
For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not
ashamed: for I know whom I
have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I
have committed unto him against that day.
For this reason, even though I suffer as I do, I am not
ashamed; for I know whom I
have believed, and I am
convinced that He is able to guard what I
have entrusted to Him for that day.
Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
Hold on to the pattern of sound teaching you have heard from me, with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
And the things that you
have heard me say among many witnesses,
entrust these to faithful men who will be qualified to teach others as well.
Who concerning the truth
have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.
who
have deviated from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already occurred, and they undermine the faith of some.
You, however,
have observed my teaching, my conduct, my purpose, my faith, my
patience, my love, my
perseverance,
But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been
assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
But as for you, continue in the things you have learned and firmly believed, since you know from whom you have learned them.
And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
From infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
Tychicus, however, I
have sent to Ephesus.
Not giving
heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.
and will pay no attention to Jewish myths or to the commands of men who have rejected the truth.
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
He saved us, not by the righteous deeds we had done, but according to His mercy, through the washing of new birth and
renewal by the Holy Spirit.
This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou
affirm constantly, that they which
have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.
This saying is
trustworthy. And I want you to
emphasize these things, so that those who
have believed God will take care to
devote themselves to good deeds. These things are excellent and profitable for the people.
As soon as I send
Artemas or
Tychicus to you, make every effort to come to me at
Nicopolis, because I
have decided to winter there.
Bring Zenas the
lawyer and Apollos on their journey
diligently, that nothing be wanting unto them.
Do your best to
equip Zenas the
lawyer and Apollos, so that they will
have everything they need.
For we
have great joy and
consolation in thy love, because the
bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother.
I take great joy and encouragement in your love, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the saints.
I appeal to you for my child
Onesimus, whose father I became while I was in chains.
Whom I
have sent again: thou therefore receive him, that is, mine own
bowels:
I am sending back to you him who is my very heart.
Whom I would
have retained with me, that in thy
stead he might
have ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel:
I would have liked to keep him with me, so that on your behalf he could minister to me in my chains for the gospel.
For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever;
For perhaps this is why he was separated from you for a while, so that you might have him back for good—
I Paul
have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it:
albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides.
I, Paul, write this with my own hand. I will repay it—not to mention that you owe me your very self.
Yea, brother, let me
have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my
bowels in the Lord.
Yes, brother, let me
have some benefit from you in the Lord. Refresh my heart in Christ.
For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day
have I
begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?
For to which of the angels did God ever say: “You are My Son;
today I
have become Your Father”? Or again: “I will be His Father, and He will be My Son”?
Thou hast loved righteousness, and
hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath
anointed thee with the oil of
gladness above thy fellows.
You
have loved righteousness and
hated wickedness; therefore God, Your God, has
anointed You above Your companions with the oil of joy.”
Therefore we ought to give the more earnest
heed to the things which we
have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.
We must pay closer attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.
Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
Now since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity, so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death, that is, the devil,
Wherefore I was
grieved with that generation, and said, They do
alway err in their heart; and they
have not known my ways.
Therefore I was
angry with that generation, and I said, ‘Their hearts are always going
astray, and they
have not known My ways.’
For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence
stedfast unto the end;
We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly to the end the assurance we had at first.
Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.
Therefore, while the promise of entering His rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be deemed to have fallen short of it.
For we which
have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I
have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
Now we who
have believed enter that rest. As for the others, it is just as God has said: “So I
swore on oath in My anger, ‘They shall never enter My rest.’” And yet His works
have been finished since the foundation of the world.
