And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named
Ananias; and to
him said the Lord in a vision,
Ananias. And he said, Behold, I am here, Lord.
In Damascus there was a disciple named
Ananias. The Lord spoke to
him in a vision, “
Ananias!” “Here I am, Lord,” he answered.
And the Lord said unto
him, Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and
enquire in the house of
Judas for one called Saul, of
Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth,
“Get up!” the Lord told
him. “Go to the house of
Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from
Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying.
And hath seen in a vision a man named
Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on
him, that he might receive his sight.
In a vision he has seen a man named
Ananias come and place his hands on
him to restore his sight.”
But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:
“Go!” said the Lord. “This man is My chosen instrument to carry My name before the Gentiles and their kings, and before the people of Israel.
For I will
shew him how great things he must suffer for my name’s sake.
I will show him how much he must suffer for My name.”
And
Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on
him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.
So
Ananias went to the house, and when he arrived, he placed his hands on Saul. “Brother Saul,” he said, “the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here, has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”
But all that heard
him were
amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came
hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests?
All who heard
him were
astounded and asked, “Isn’t this the man who
wreaked havoc in Jerusalem on those who call on this name? And hasn’t he come here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?”
And after that many days were fulfilled, the Jews took counsel to kill him:
After many days had passed, the Jews
conspired to kill
him,
But their laying
await was known of Saul. And they watched the gates day and night to kill
him.
but Saul learned of their plot. Day and night they watched the city gates in order to kill him.
Then the disciples took
him by night, and let
him down by the wall in a
basket.
One night, however, his disciples took
him and lowered
him in a
basket through a window in the wall.
And when Saul was come to Jerusalem, he
assayed to join
himself to the disciples: but they were all afraid of
him, and believed not that he was a disciple.
When Saul arrived in Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple.
But
Barnabas took
him, and brought
him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to
him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus.
Then
Barnabas brought
him to the apostles and described how Saul had seen the Lord, who spoke to
him on the road to Damascus, and how Saul had spoken boldly in that city in the name of Jesus.
And he spake boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus, and disputed against the Grecians: but they went about to
slay him.
He talked and
debated with the
Grecian Jews, but they tried to kill
him.
Which when the brethren knew, they brought
him down to Caesarea, and sent
him forth to
Tarsus.
When the brothers learned of this, they took
him down to Caesarea and sent
him off to
Tarsus.
And Peter said unto
him,
Aeneas, Jesus Christ maketh thee whole: arise, and make thy bed. And he arose immediately.
“
Aeneas,” Peter said to
him, “Jesus Christ heals you! Get up and put away your mat.” Immediately
Aeneas got up,
And all that dwelt at
Lydda and Saron saw
him, and turned to the Lord.
and all who lived in
Lydda and
Sharon saw
him and turned to the Lord.
And
forasmuch as
Lydda was
nigh to
Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent unto
him two men, desiring
him that he would not delay to come to them.
Since
Lydda was near
Joppa, the disciples heard that Peter was there and sent two men to
urge him, “Come to us without delay.”
Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought
him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by
him weeping, and
shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them.
So Peter got up and went with them. On his arrival, they took
him to the upper room. All the widows stood around
him,
weeping and showing
him the tunics and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them.
But Peter put them all forth, and
kneeled down, and prayed; and turning
him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up.
Then Peter sent them all out of the room. He
knelt down and prayed, and turning toward her body, he said, “Tabitha, get up!” She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter, she sat up.
He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to
him, and saying unto
him,
Cornelius.
One day at about the ninth hour, he had a clear vision of an angel of God who came to
him and said, “
Cornelius!”
And when he looked on
him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto
him, Thy prayers and thine
alms are come up for a
memorial before God.
Cornelius stared at
him in fear and asked, “What is it, Lord?” The angel answered, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have ascended as a
memorial offering before God.
And when the angel which spake unto
Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a
devout soldier of them that waited on
him continually;
When the angel who spoke to
him had gone,
Cornelius called two of his servants and a
devout soldier from among his attendants.
And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto
him, as it had been a great sheet
knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:
He saw heaven open and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners.
And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.
Then a voice said to him: “Get up, Peter, kill and eat!”
And the voice spake unto
him again the second time, What God hath
cleansed, that call not thou common.
The voice spoke to him a second time: “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”
Now while Peter doubted in
himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from
Cornelius had made
enquiry for Simon’s house, and stood before the gate,
While Peter was
puzzling over the meaning of the vision, the men sent by
Cornelius found Simon’s house and approached the gate.
While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.
As Peter continued to
reflect on the vision, the Spirit said to
him, “Behold, three men are looking for you.
Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto
him from
Cornelius; and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come?
So Peter went down to the men and said, “Here am I, the one you are looking for. Why have you come?”
And they said,
Cornelius the
centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was
warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.
“
Cornelius the
centurion has sent us,” they said. “He is a righteous and God-fearing man with a good reputation among the whole Jewish nation. A holy angel
instructed him to request your presence in his home so he could hear a message from you.”
Then called he them in, and
lodged them. And on the
morrow Peter went away with them, and certain brethren from
Joppa accompanied
him.
So Peter invited them in as his guests. And the next day he got ready and went with them, accompanied by some of the brothers from
Joppa.
And as Peter was coming in,
Cornelius met
him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped
him.
As Peter was about to enter,
Cornelius met
him and fell at his feet to worship
him.
But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.
But Peter helped him up. “Stand up,” he said, “I am only a man myself.”
And as he talked with him, he went in, and found many that were come together.
As Peter talked with him, he went inside and found many people gathered together.
And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a
Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.
He said to them, “You know how unlawful it is for a
Jew to associate with a foreigner or visit
him. But God has shown me that I should not call any man impure or unclean.
But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.
but welcomes those from every nation who fear Him and do what is right.
How God
anointed Jesus of
Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and
healing all that were
oppressed of the devil; for God was with
him.
how God
anointed Jesus of
Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how Jesus went around doing good and
healing all who were
oppressed by the devil, because God was with
Him.
And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they
slew and
hanged on a tree:
We are witnesses of all that He did, both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem. And although they put Him to death by hanging Him on a tree,
Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;
God raised Him up on the third day and caused Him to be seen—
Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.
not by all the people, but by the witnesses God had chosen
beforehand, by us who
ate and
drank with
Him after He rose from the dead.
To
him give all the prophets witness, that through his name
whosoever believeth in
him shall receive remission of sins.
And he commanded them to be
baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they
him to
tarry certain days.
So he ordered that they be
baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked
him to stay for a few days.
So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the
circumcised believers took issue with
him And he shewed us how he had seen an angel in his house, which stood and said unto
him, Send men to
Joppa, and call for Simon, whose
surname is Peter;
He told us how he had seen an angel standing in his house and saying, ‘Send to
Joppa for Simon who is called Peter.
And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.
and when he found him, he brought him back to Antioch. So for a full year they met together with the church and taught large numbers of people. The disciples were first called Christians at Antioch.
And when he had
apprehended him, he put
him in prison, and delivered
him to four
quaternions of soldiers to keep
him; intending after Easter to bring
him forth to the people.
He arrested
him and put
him in prison, handing
him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring
him out to the people after the
Passover.
Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.
So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was
fervently praying to God for
him.
And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison.
On the night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, with sentries standing guard at the entrance to the prison.
And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon
him, and a light
shined in the prison: and he
smote Peter on the side, and raised
him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.
Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light
shone in the cell. He
tapped Peter on the side and
woke him up, saying, “Get up quickly.” And the chains fell off his wrists.
And the angel said unto
him,
Gird thyself, and bind on thy
sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto
him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.
“Get dressed and put on your
sandals,” said the angel. Peter did so, and the angel told
him, “
Wrap your
cloak around you and follow me.”
And he went out, and followed
him; and
wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.
So Peter followed him out, but he was unaware that what the angel was doing was real. He thought he was only seeing a vision.
When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own
accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and
forthwith the angel departed from
him.
They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city, which opened for them by itself. When they had gone outside and walked the length of one block, the angel suddenly left him.
And when Peter was come to
himself, he said, Now I know of a
surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.
Then Peter came to
himself and said, “Now I know for sure that the Lord has sent His angel and
rescued me from Herod’s
grasp and from everything the Jewish people were
anticipating.”
But Peter continued
knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw
him, they were
astonished.
But Peter kept on
knocking, and when they opened the door and saw
him, they were
astounded.
But he,
beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought
him out of the prison. And he said, Go
shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place.
Peter motioned with his hand for silence, and he described how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. “Send word to James and to the brothers,” he said, and he left for another place.
And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judaea to Caesarea, and there abode.
After Herod had searched for
him unsuccessfully, he examined the guards and ordered that they be executed. Then he went down from
Judea to Caesarea and spent some time there.
And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and
Sidon: but they came with one
accord to
him, and, having made Blastus the king’s
chamberlain their friend, desired peace; because their country was
nourished by the king’s country.
Now Herod was in a
furious dispute with the people of Tyre and
Sidon, and they
convened before
him. Having secured the support of Blastus, the king’s
chamberlain, they asked for peace, because their region depended on the king’s country for food.
And immediately the angel of the Lord
smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.
Immediately, because Herod did not give glory to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.
Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him,
Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked directly at Elymas
And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on
him a
mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead
him by the hand.
Now look, the hand of the Lord is against you, and for a time you will be blind and unable to see the light of the sun.” Immediately
mist and darkness came over
him, and he
groped about, seeking someone to lead
him by the hand.
And when he had removed
him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of
Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.
After removing Saul, He raised up David as their king and
testified about
him: ‘I have found David son of
Jesse a man after My own heart; he will carry out My will in its
entirety.’
For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew
him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in
condemning him.
The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in
condemning Him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath.
And though they found no cause of death in
him, yet desired they
Pilate that he should be slain.
And though they found no ground for a death sentence, they asked
Pilate to have
Him executed.
And when they had fulfilled all that was written of
him, they took
him down from the tree, and laid
him in a
sepulchre.
When they had carried out all that was written about Him, they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb.
But God raised him from the dead:
But God raised Him from the dead,
And he was seen many days of them which came up with
him from
Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people.
and for many days He was seen by those who had accompanied
Him from
Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now His witnesses to our people.
And as concerning that he raised
him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure
mercies of David.
In fact, God raised Him from the dead, never to see decay. As He has said: ‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.’
And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.
Through
Him everyone who believes is justified from everything you could not be justified from by the law of Moses.
The same heard Paul speak: who
stedfastly beholding
him, and perceiving that he had faith to be
healed,
This man was
listening to the words of Paul, who looked intently at
him and saw that he had faith to be
healed.
Nevertheless he left not
himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and
gladness.
Yet He has not left
Himself without testimony to His goodness: He gives you rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling your hearts with food and
gladness.”
And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and
Iconium, who persuaded the people, and, having stoned Paul, drew
him out of the city, supposing he had been dead.
Then some Jews arrived from Antioch and
Iconium and won over the crowds. They stoned Paul and
dragged him outside the city, presuming he was dead.
Howbeit, as the disciples stood round about
him, he rose up, and came into the city: and the next day he departed with
Barnabas to Derbe.
But after the disciples had gathered around
him, he got up and went back into the city. And the next day he left with
Barnabas for Derbe.
For Moses of old time hath in every city them that
preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.
For Moses has been proclaimed in every city from ancient times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath.”
But Paul thought not good to take
him with them, who departed from them from
Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work.
But Paul thought it best not to take
him, because he had deserted them in
Pamphylia and had not accompanied them in the work.
Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at
Lystra and
Iconium.
Him would Paul have to go forth with
him; and took and
circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek.
Paul wanted
Timothy to
accompany him, so he took
him and
circumcised him on account of the Jews in that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.
And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of
Macedonia, and prayed
him, saying, Come over into
Macedonia, and help us.
And the keeper of the prison
awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed
himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled.
When the
jailer woke up and saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill
himself, presuming that the prisoners had escaped.
And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.
Then Paul and
Silas spoke the word of the Lord to
him and to
everyone in his house.
And they that conducted Paul brought
him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto
Silas and
Timotheus for to come to
him with all speed, they departed.
Those who
escorted Paul brought
him to Athens and then returned with instructions for
Silas and
Timothy to join
him as soon as possible.
Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was
stirred in
him, when he saw the city wholly given to
idolatry.
While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was deeply disturbed in his spirit to see that the city was full of idols.
Therefore disputed he in the
synagogue with the Jews, and with the
devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with
him.
So he reasoned in the
synagogue with the Jews and God-fearing Gentiles, and in the marketplace with those he met each day.
Then certain philosophers of the
Epicureans, and of the Stoicks,
encountered him. And some said, What will this
babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a
setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.
Some
Epicurean and
Stoic philosophers also began to
debate with
him. Some of them asked, “What is this
babbler trying to say?” Others said, “He seems to be advocating foreign gods.” They said this because Paul was
proclaiming the good news of Jesus and the resurrection.
And they took
him, and brought
him unto
Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine,
whereof thou speakest, is?
So they took Paul and brought
him to the
Areopagus, where they asked
him, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting?
For as I passed by, and
beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship,
him declare I unto you.
For as I walked around and examined your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore what you worship as something unknown, I now
proclaim to you.
Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
Nor is He served by human hands, as if He needed anything, because He
Himself gives
everyone life and breath and everything else.
That they should seek the Lord, if
haply they might feel after
him, and find
him, though he be not far from every one of us:
God intended that they would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.
For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
‘For in Him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are His offspring.’
Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained;
whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised
him from the dead.
For He has set a day when He will judge the world with justice by the Man He has appointed. He has given proof of this to
everyone by raising
Him from the dead.”
And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some
mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.
When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some began to
mock him, but others said, “We want to hear you again on this
topic.”
But some joined
him and believed, including
Dionysius the
Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others who were with them.
And when they opposed themselves, and
blasphemed, he
shook his
raiment, and said unto them, Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean: from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles.
But when they opposed and
insulted him, he
shook out his garments and told them, “Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent of it. From now on I will go to the Gentiles.”
And when
Gallio was the deputy of
Achaia, the Jews made insurrection with one
accord against Paul, and brought
him to the judgment seat,
Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes, the chief ruler of the
synagogue, and beat
him before the judgment seat. And
Gallio cared for none of those things.
At this, the crowd seized Sosthenes the
synagogue leader and beat
him in front of the judgment seat. But none of this was of
concern to
Gallio.
And Paul after this
tarried there yet a good while, and then took his leave of the brethren, and sailed thence into Syria, and with
him Priscilla and
Aquila; having
shorn his head in Cenchrea: for he had a
vow.
Paul remained in Corinth for quite some time before saying goodbye to the brothers. He had his head
shaved in Cenchrea to keep a
vow he had made, and then he sailed for Syria, accompanied by
Priscilla and
Aquila.
And he came to Ephesus, and left them there: but he
himself entered into the
synagogue, and reasoned with the Jews.
When they reached Ephesus, Paul parted ways with
Priscilla and
Aquila. He
himself went into the
synagogue there and reasoned with the Jews.
When they desired
him to
tarry longer time with them, he consented not;
When they asked him to stay for a while longer, he declined.
And he began to speak boldly in the
synagogue: whom when
Aquila and
Priscilla had heard, they took
him unto them, and
expounded unto
him the way of God more perfectly.
And he began to speak boldly in the
synagogue. When
Priscilla and
Aquila heard
him, they took
him in and explained to
him the way of God more accurately.
And when he was disposed to pass into
Achaia, the brethren wrote,
exhorting the disciples to receive
him: who, when he was come, helped them much which had believed through grace:
When Apollos resolved to cross over to
Achaia, the brothers encouraged
him and wrote to the disciples there to
welcome him. On his arrival, he was a great help to those who by grace had believed.
He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?” “No,” they answered, “we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
