Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
To many thou shalt give the more inheritance, and to few thou shalt give the less inheritance: to every one shall his inheritance be given according to those that were numbered of him.
Increase the inheritance for a large tribe and decrease it for a small one; each tribe is to receive its inheritance according to the number of those registered.
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
and the LORD answered him,
And if his father have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his
kinsman that is next to
him of his family, and he shall possess it: and it shall be unto the children of Israel a statute of judgment, as the LORD commanded Moses.
And if his father has no brothers, give his inheritance to the next of
kin from his clan, that he may take possession of it. This is to be a
statutory ordinance for the Israelites, as the LORD has commanded Moses.’”
And the LORD said unto Moses, Take thee Joshua the son of
Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay thine hand upon
him;
And the LORD replied to Moses, “Take Joshua son of
Nun, a man with the Spirit in
him, and lay your hands on
him.
And set
him before
Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation; and give
him a charge in their sight.
Have
him stand before
Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation, and commission
him in their sight.
And thou shalt put some of thine honour upon
him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be
obedient.
Confer on
him some of your authority, so that the whole congregation of Israel will obey
him.
And he shall stand before
Eleazar the priest, who shall ask counsel for
him after the judgment of
Urim before the LORD: at his word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he, and all the children of Israel with
him, even all the congregation.
He shall stand before
Eleazar the priest, who will seek counsel for
him before the LORD by the judgment of the
Urim. At his command, he and all the Israelites with
him—the entire congregation—will go out and come in.”
And Moses did as the LORD commanded
him: and he took Joshua, and set
him before
Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation:
Moses did as the LORD had commanded
him. He took Joshua, had
him stand before
Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation,
And he laid his hands upon him, and gave him a charge, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.
and laid his hands on
him and commissioned
him, as the LORD had
instructed through Moses.
And Moses told the children of Israel according to all that the LORD commanded Moses.
So Moses spoke all this to the Israelites just as the LORD had commanded him.
If a man
vow a
vow unto the LORD, or
swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth.
If a man makes a
vow to the LORD or swears an oath to
obligate himself by a
pledge, he must not break his word; he must do everything he has promised.
And Moses sent them to the war, a thousand of every tribe, them and
Phinehas the son of
Eleazar the priest, to the war, with the holy instruments, and the
trumpets to blow in his hand.
And Moses sent the thousand from each tribe into battle, along with
Phinehas son of
Eleazar the priest, who took with
him the vessels of the sanctuary and the
trumpets for signaling.
Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.
So now, kill all the boys, as well as every woman who has had relations with a man,
But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with
him, keep alive for
yourselves.
And thirty and two thousand persons in all, of women that had not known man by lying with him.
and 32,000 women who had not
slept with a man.
Even of the children of Israel’s half, Moses took one portion of fifty, both of man and of beast, and gave them unto the Levites, which kept the charge of the tabernacle of the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses.
From the Israelites’ half, Moses took one out of every fifty persons and animals and gave them to the Levites who kept charge of the tabernacle of the LORD, as the LORD had commanded him.
(For the men of war had taken
spoil, every man for
himself.)
Each of the soldiers had taken
plunder for
himself.
For if ye turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and ye shall destroy all this people.
For if you turn away from following Him, He will once again leave this people in the wilderness, and you will be the cause of their destruction.”
And they came near unto him, and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones:
Then the Gadites and Reubenites approached Moses and said, “We want to build sheepfolds here for our
livestock and cities for our little ones.
And will go all of you armed over Jordan before the LORD, until he hath driven out his enemies from before him,
and if every one of your armed men crosses the Jordan before the LORD, until He has driven His enemies out before Him,
And if he
smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
If, however,
anyone strikes a person with an iron object and kills
him, he is a murderer; the murderer must surely be put to death.
And if he
smite him with throwing a stone,
wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
Or if
anyone has in his hand a stone of deadly size, and he strikes and kills another, he is a murderer; the murderer must surely be put to death.
Or if he
smite him with an hand weapon of wood,
wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
If
anyone has in his hand a deadly object of wood, and he strikes and kills another, he is a murderer; the murderer must surely be put to death.
The
revenger of blood
himself shall
slay the murderer: when he meeteth
him, he shall
slay him.
The
avenger of blood is to put the murderer to death; when he finds
him, he is to kill
him.
But if he thrust
him of hatred, or
hurl at
him by laying of wait, that he die;
Or in
enmity smite him with his hand, that he die: he that
smote him shall surely be put to death; for he is a murderer: the
revenger of blood shall
slay the murderer, when he meeteth
him.
or if in hostility he strikes
him with his hand and he dies, the one who struck
him must surely be put to death; he is a murderer. When the
avenger of blood finds the murderer, he is to kill
him.
But if he thrust
him suddenly without
enmity, or have cast upon
him any thing without laying of wait,
Or with any stone,
wherewith a man may die, seeing
him not, and cast it upon
him, that he die, and was not his enemy, neither sought his
harm:
or without looking drops a heavy stone that kills
him, but he was not an enemy and did not intend to
harm him,
And the congregation shall deliver the
slayer out of the hand of the
revenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore
him to the city of his refuge,
whither he was fled: and he shall
abide in it unto the death of the high priest, which was
anointed with the holy oil.
The assembly is to protect the
manslayer from the hand of the
avenger of blood. Then the assembly will return
him to the city of refuge to which he fled, and he must live there until the death of the high priest, who was
anointed with the holy oil.
And the
revenger of blood find
him without the borders of the city of his refuge, and the
revenger of blood kill the
slayer; he shall not be guilty of blood:
and the
avenger of blood finds
him outside of his city of refuge and kills
him, then the
avenger will not be guilty of
bloodshed Whoso killeth any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses: but one witness shall not
testify against any person to cause
him to die.
If
anyone kills a person, the murderer is to be put to death on the testimony of the witnesses. But no one is to be put to death based on the testimony of a
lone witness.
And ye shall take no satisfaction for him that is fled to the city of his refuge, that he should come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest.
Nor should you accept a
ransom for the person who flees to a city of refuge and allow
him to return and live on his own land before the death of the high priest.
So ye shall not
pollute the land wherein ye are: for blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be
cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of
him that shed it.
Do not
pollute the land where you live, for
bloodshed pollutes the land, and no
atonement can be made for the land on which the blood is shed, except by the blood of the one who shed it.
And they said, The LORD commanded my lord to give the land for an inheritance by lot to the children of Israel: and my lord was commanded by the LORD to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother unto his daughters.
saying, “When the LORD commanded my lord to give the land as an inheritance to the Israelites by lot, He also commanded him to give the inheritance of our brother Zelophehad to his daughters.
So shall not the inheritance of the children of Israel remove from tribe to tribe: for every one of the children of Israel shall keep himself to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.
No inheritance in Israel may be transferred from tribe to tribe, because each of the Israelites is to retain the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.
Neither shall the inheritance remove from one tribe to another tribe; but every one of the tribes of the children of Israel shall keep himself to his own inheritance.
No inheritance may be transferred from one tribe to another, for each tribe of Israel must retain its inheritance.”
And it came to pass in the
fortieth year, in the
eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that the LORD had given
him in commandment unto them;
In the
fortieth year, on the first day of the
eleventh month, Moses proclaimed to the Israelites all that the LORD had commanded
him concerning them.
And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him.
At that time I charged your judges: “Hear the disputes between your brothers, and judge fairly between a man and his brother or a foreign resident.
The LORD your God which goeth before you, he shall fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes;
The LORD your God, who goes before you, will fight for you, just as you saw Him do for you in Egypt
Save
Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to
him will I give the land that he hath
trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath wholly followed the LORD.
except
Caleb son of Jephunneh. He will see it, and I will give
him and his descendants the land on which he has set foot, because he followed the LORD wholeheartedly.”
But Joshua the son of
Nun, which standeth before thee, he shall go in thither:
encourage him: for he shall cause Israel to
inherit it.
Joshua son of
Nun, who stands before you, will enter it.
Encourage him, for he will enable Israel to
inherit the land.
Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the river
Arnon: behold, I have given into thine hand Sihon the Amorite, king of
Heshbon, and his land: begin to possess it, and
contend with
him in battle.
“Arise, set out, and cross the
Arnon Valley. See, I have delivered into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of
Heshbon, and his land. Begin to take possession of it and
engage him in battle.
But Sihon king of
Heshbon would not let us pass by
him: for the LORD thy God
hardened his spirit, and made his heart
obstinate, that he might deliver
him into thy hand, as appeareth this day.
But Sihon king of
Heshbon would not let us pass through, for the LORD your God had made his spirit
stubborn and his heart
obstinate, that He might deliver
him into your hand, as is the case this day.
And the LORD our God delivered
him before us; and we
smote him, and his sons, and all his people.
And the LORD our God delivered him over to us, and we defeated him and his sons and his whole army.
And the LORD said unto me, Fear
him not: for I will deliver
him, and all his people, and his land, into thy hand; and thou shalt do unto
him as thou
didst unto Sihon king of the
Amorites, which dwelt at
Heshbon.
But the LORD said to me, “Do not fear
him, for I have delivered
him into your hand, along with all his people and his land. Do to
him as you did to Sihon king of the
Amorites, who lived in
Heshbon.”
So the LORD our God delivered into our hands
Og also, the king of
Bashan, and all his people: and we
smote him until none was left to
him remaining.
So the LORD our God also delivered
Og king of
Bashan and his whole army into our hands. We struck them down until no
survivor was left.
Jair the son of
Manasseh took all the country of
Argob unto the coasts of Geshuri and Maachathi; and called them after his own name,
Bashan-havoth-
jair, unto this day.
Jair, a
descendant of
Manasseh, took the whole region of
Argob as far as the border of the Geshurites and Maacathites. He renamed
Bashan after
himself, Havvoth-
jair, by which it is called to this day.
Ye shall not fear them: for the LORD your God he shall fight for you.
Do not be afraid of them, for the LORD your God Himself will fight for you.”
But charge Joshua, and
encourage him, and
strengthen him: for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to
inherit the land which thou shalt see.
But commission Joshua,
encourage him, and
strengthen him, for he will cross over
ahead of the people and enable them to
inherit the land that you will see.”
For what nation is there so great, who hath God so
nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon
him for?
For what nation is great enough to have a god as near to them as the LORD our God is to us whenever we call on Him?
But the LORD hath taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, even out of Egypt, to be unto him a people of inheritance, as ye are this day.
Yet the LORD has taken you and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be the people of His inheritance, as you are
today.
When thou shalt
beget children, and children’s children, and ye shall have remained long in the land, and shall corrupt
yourselves, and make a
graven image, or the likeness of any thing, and shall do evil in the sight of the LORD thy God, to
provoke him to anger:
After you have children and grandchildren and you have been in the land a long time, if you then act corruptly and make an
idol of any form—doing evil in the sight of the LORD your God and
provoking Him to anger—
But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.
But if from there you will seek the LORD your God, you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul.
Or hath God
assayed to go and take
him a nation from the midst of another nation, by temptations, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by a stretched out arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?
Or has any god tried to take as his own a nation out of another nation—by trials, signs, wonders, and war, by a strong hand and an outstretched arm, and by great terrors—as the LORD your God did for you in Egypt, before your eyes?
Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the LORD he is God; there is none else beside him.
You were shown these things so that you would know that the LORD is God; there is no other besides Him.
That the
slayer might
flee thither, which should kill his neighbour unawares, and
hated him not in times past; and that
fleeing unto one of these cities he might live:
Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave
anyone unpunished who takes His name in vain.
And ye said, Behold, the LORD our God hath shewed us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire: we have seen this day that God
doth talk with man, and he liveth.
and you said, “Behold, the LORD our God has shown us His glory and greatness, and we have heard His voice out of the fire.
Today we have seen that a man can live even if God speaks with
him.
Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God, and serve
him, and shalt
swear by his name.
Fear the LORD your God, serve Him only, and take your oaths in His name.
Ye shall not
tempt the LORD your God, as ye
tempted him in Massah.
Do not test the LORD your God as you tested Him at Massah.
Then thou shalt say unto thy son, We were Pharaoh’s
bondmen in Egypt; and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand:
then you are to tell him, “We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.
For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.
For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His prized possession out of all peoples on the face of the earth.
Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;
Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps His covenant of loving devotion for a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commandments.
And repayeth them that
hate him to their face, to destroy them: he will not be
slack to
him that hateth
him, he will repay
him to his face.
But those who
hate Him He repays to their faces with destruction; He will not
hesitate to repay to his face the one who hates
Him.
Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.
Therefore you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God, walking in His ways and fearing Him.
And I fell down before the LORD, as at the first, forty days and forty nights: I did neither eat bread, nor drink water, because of all your sins which ye
sinned, in doing wickedly in the sight of the LORD, to
provoke him to anger.
Then I fell down before the LORD for forty days and forty nights, as I had done the first time. I did not eat bread or drink water because of all the sin you had committed in doing what was evil in the sight of the LORD and
provoking Him to anger.
And the LORD was very
angry with Aaron to have destroyed
him: and I prayed for Aaron also the same time.
The LORD was
angry enough with Aaron to destroy
him, but at that time I also prayed for Aaron.
Likewise when the LORD sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, Go up and possess the land which I have given you; then ye rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God, and ye believed
him not, nor
hearkened to his voice.
And when the LORD sent you out from Kadesh-barnea, He said, “Go up and possess the land that I have given you.” But you rebelled against the command of the LORD your God. You neither believed Him nor obeyed Him.
And the children of Israel took their journey from Beeroth of the children of Jaakan to Mosera: there Aaron died, and there he was buried; and
Eleazar his son ministered in the priest’s office in his
stead.
The Israelites traveled from Beeroth
Bene-jaakan to Moserah, where Aaron died and was buried, and
Eleazar his son succeeded
him as priest.
At that time the LORD separated the tribe of Levi, to bear the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to minister unto
him, and to
bless in his name, unto this day.
At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to serve
Him, and to
pronounce blessings in His name, as they do to this day.
Wherefore Levi hath no part nor inheritance with his brethren; the LORD is his inheritance, according as the LORD thy God promised him.
That is why Levi has no portion or inheritance among his brothers; the LORD is his inheritance, as the LORD your God promised him.
And now, Israel, what
doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love
him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,
And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God by walking in all His ways, to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul,
He
doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving
him food and
raiment.
He executes justice for the fatherless and widow, and He loves the foreigner, giving him food and clothing.
Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God;
him shalt thou serve, and to
him shalt thou
cleave, and
swear by his name.
You are to fear the LORD your God and serve Him. Hold fast to Him and take your oaths in His name.
And it shall come to pass, if ye shall
hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the LORD your God, and to serve
him with all your heart and with all your soul,
So if you carefully obey the commandments I am giving you
today, to love the LORD your God and to serve
Him with all your heart and with all your soul,
For if ye shall
diligently keep all these commandments which I command you, to do them, to love the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, and to
cleave unto
him;
For if you carefully keep all these commandments I am giving you to follow—to love the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, and to hold fast to Him—
Thou shalt not
hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
you must not
listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. For the LORD your God is testing you to find out whether you love
Him with all your heart and with all your soul.
Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear
him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve
him, and
cleave unto
him.
You are to follow the LORD your God and fear
Him. Keep His commandments and
listen to His voice; serve
Him and hold fast to
Him.
Thou shalt not consent unto
him, nor
hearken unto
him; neither shall thine eye
pity him, neither shalt thou
spare, neither shalt thou
conceal him:
you must not yield to
him or
listen to
him. Show
him no
pity, and do not
spare him or shield
him.
But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.
Instead, you must surely kill him. Your hand must be the first against him to put him to death, and then the hands of all the people.
And thou shalt stone
him with stones, that he die; because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of
bondage.
Stone him to death for trying to turn you away from the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
for thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God, and the LORD hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth.
for you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD has chosen you to be a people for His prized possession out of all the peoples on the face of the earth.
And the
Levite that is within thy gates; thou shalt not
forsake him; for he hath no part nor inheritance with thee.
And do not neglect the
Levite within your gates, since he has no portion or inheritance among you.
But thou shalt open thine hand wide unto
him, and shalt surely
lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he wanteth.
Instead, you are to open your hand to
him and freely
loan him whatever he needs.
Beware that there be not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou givest
him nought; and he cry unto the LORD against thee, and it be sin unto thee.
Be careful not to
harbor this wicked thought in your heart: “The seventh year, the year of release, is near,” so that you look upon your poor brother begrudgingly and give
him nothing. He will cry out to the LORD against you, and you will be guilty of sin.
Thou shalt surely give
him, and thine heart shall not be
grieved when thou givest unto
him: because that for this thing the LORD thy God shall
bless thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto.
Give generously to
him, and do not let your heart be
grieved when you do so. And because of this the LORD your God will
bless you in all your work and in everything to which you put your hand.
And if thy brother, an Hebrew man, or an Hebrew woman, be sold unto thee, and serve thee six years; then in the seventh year thou shalt let him go free from thee.
If a fellow Hebrew, a man or a woman, is sold to you and serves you six years, then in the seventh year you must set him free.
And when thou sendest him out free from thee, thou shalt not let him go away empty:
And when you release him, do not send him away empty-handed.
Thou shalt furnish
him liberally out of thy flock, and out of thy floor, and out of thy winepress: of that
wherewith the LORD thy God hath blessed thee thou shalt give unto
him.
You are to furnish
him liberally from your flock, your
threshing floor, and your winepress. You shall give to
him as the LORD your God has blessed you.
It shall not seem hard unto thee, when thou sendest
him away free from thee; for he hath been worth a double
hired servant to thee, in serving thee six years: and the LORD thy God shall
bless thee in all that thou doest.
Do not regard it as a
hardship to set your servant free, because his six years of service were worth twice the wages of a
hired hand. And the LORD your God will
bless you in all you do.
The hands of the witnesses shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterward the hands of all the people. So thou shalt put the evil away from among you.
The hands of the witnesses shall be the first in putting
him to death, and after that, the hands of all the people. So you must
purge the evil from among you.
Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the LORD thy God shall choose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee: thou mayest not set a stranger over thee, which is not thy brother.
you are to
appoint over
yourselves the king whom the LORD your God shall choose.
Appoint a king from among your brothers; you are not to set over
yourselves a foreigner who is not one of your brothers.
But he shall not multiply horses to
himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses:
forasmuch as the LORD hath said unto you, Ye shall henceforth return no more that way.
But the king must not acquire many horses for himself or send the people back to Egypt to acquire more horses, for the LORD has said, ‘You are never to go back that way again.’
Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.
He must not take many wives for
himself, lest his heart go
astray. He must not
accumulate for
himself large amounts of silver and gold.
And it shall be, when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests the Levites:
When he is seated on his royal throne, he must write for
himself a copy of this instruction on a
scroll in the presence of the
Levitical priests.
And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them:
It is to remain with him, and he is to read from it all the days of his life, so that he may learn to fear the LORD his God by carefully observing all the words of this instruction and these statutes.
The firstfruit also of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the first of the
fleece of thy sheep, shalt thou give
him.
You are to give them the firstfruits of your grain, new wine, and oil, and the first wool
sheared from your flock.
For the LORD thy God hath chosen him out of all thy tribes, to stand to minister in the name of the LORD, him and his sons for ever.
For the LORD your God has chosen Levi and his sons out of all your tribes to stand and minister in His name for all time.
The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto
him ye shall
hearken;
The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You must
listen to
him.
I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.
I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. I will put My words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him.
