And all the people, even the people of war that were with
him, went up, and drew
nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of
Ai: now there was a valley between them and
Ai.
Then all the troops who were with
him marched up and approached the city. They arrived in front of
Ai and camped to the north of it, with the valley between them and the city.
And it came to pass, when the king of
Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he
wist not that there were liers in
ambush against
him behind the city.
When the king of
Ai saw the Israelites, he
hurried out early in the morning with the men of the city to
engage them in battle at an appointed place overlooking the Arabah. But he did not know that an
ambush had been set up against
him behind the city.
And the king of
Ai they took alive, and brought
him to Joshua.
But they took the king of
Ai alive and brought
him to Joshua.
And they went to Joshua unto the camp at
Gilgal, and said unto
him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us.
They went to Joshua in the camp at
Gilgal and said to
him and the men of Israel, “We have come from a distant land; please make a treaty with us.”
And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,
“Your servants have come from a very distant land,” they replied, “because of the fame of the LORD your God. For we have heard the reports about Him: all that He did in Egypt,
So Joshua ascended from
Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with
him, and all the mighty men of valour.
So Joshua and his whole army, including all the mighty men of
valor, came from
Gilgal.
And Joshua returned, and all Israel with
him, unto the camp to
Gilgal.
Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at
Gilgal.
And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto
him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of
Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of
Lachish, and the king of
Eglon.
So they brought the five kings out of the cave—the kings of Jerusalem,
Hebron, Jarmuth,
Lachish, and
Eglon.
And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.
When they had brought the kings to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had accompanied him, “Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings.” So the commanders came forward and put their feet on their necks.
Then Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with
him, unto
Libnah, and fought against
Libnah:
Then Joshua and all Israel with
him moved on from Makkedah to
Libnah and fought against
Libnah.
And Joshua passed from
Libnah, and all Israel with
him, unto
Lachish, and
encamped against it, and fought against it:
And Joshua and all Israel with
him moved on from
Libnah to
Lachish. They laid siege to it and fought against it.
Then Horam king of
Gezer came up to help
Lachish; and Joshua
smote him and his people, until he had left
him none remaining.
At that time Horam king of
Gezer went to help
Lachish, but Joshua struck
him down along with his people, leaving no survivors.
And from
Lachish Joshua passed unto
Eglon, and all Israel with
him; and they
encamped against it, and fought against it:
So Joshua moved on from
Lachish to
Eglon, and all Israel with
him. They laid siege to it and fought against it.
And Joshua went up from
Eglon, and all Israel with
him, unto
Hebron; and they fought against it:
Then Joshua and all Israel with
him went up from
Eglon to
Hebron and fought against it.
And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and fought against it:
Finally Joshua and all Israel with him turned toward Debir and fought against it.
And Joshua returned, and all Israel with
him, unto the camp to
Gilgal.
Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at
Gilgal.
So Joshua came, and all the people of war with
him, against them by the waters of
Merom suddenly; and they fell upon them.
So by the waters of
Merom, Joshua and his whole army came upon them suddenly and attacked them,
And Joshua did unto them as the LORD
bade him: he
houghed their horses, and burnt their
chariots with fire.
Joshua treated them as the LORD had told
him; he
hamstrung their horses and burned up their
chariots.
Now Joshua was old and
stricken in years; and the LORD said unto
him, Thou art old and
stricken in years, and there remaineth yet very much land to be possessed.
Now Joshua was old and well along in years, and the LORD said to him, “You are old and well along in years, but very much of the land remains to be possessed.
And all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the
Amorites, which reigned in
Heshbon, whom Moses
smote with the princes of
Midian, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, which were dukes of Sihon, dwelling in the country.
all the cities of the plateau and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the
Amorites, who reigned in
Heshbon until Moses killed
him and the chiefs of
Midian (Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba), the princes of Sihon who lived in the land.
Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in
Gilgal: and
Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto
him, Thou knowest the thing that the LORD said unto Moses the man of God concerning me and thee in Kadesh-barnea.
Then the sons of Judah approached Joshua at
Gilgal, and
Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to
him, “You know what the LORD said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh-barnea about you and me.
Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to
espy out the land; and I brought
him word again as it was in mine heart.
I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to
spy out the land, and I brought back to
him an
honest report.
And Joshua blessed
him, and gave unto
Caleb the son of Jephunneh
Hebron for an inheritance.
Then Joshua blessed
Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave
him Hebron as his inheritance.
And unto
Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a part among the children of Judah, according to the commandment of the LORD to Joshua, even the city of Arba the father of
Anak, which city is
Hebron.
According to the LORD’s command to
him, Joshua gave
Caleb son of Jephunneh a portion among the sons of Judah—Kiriath-arba, that is,
Hebron. (Arba was the
forefather of
Anak.)
And
Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjath-sepher, and taketh it, to
him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.
And
Caleb said, “To the man who strikes down Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will give my daughter Acsah in marriage.”
And Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of
Caleb, took it: and he gave
him Achsah his daughter to wife.
So Othniel son of
Caleb’s brother Kenaz captured the city, and
Caleb gave his daughter Acsah to
him in marriage.
And it came to pass, as she came unto
him, that she moved
him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted off her
ass; and
Caleb said unto her, What wouldest thou?
One day Acsah came to Othniel and urged
him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her
donkey,
Caleb asked her, “What do you desire?”
According to the word of the LORD they gave him the city which he asked, even Timnath-serah in mount Ephraim: and he built the city, and dwelt therein.
as the LORD had commanded. They gave him the city of Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim, as he requested. He rebuilt the city and settled in it.
And when he that
doth flee unto one of those cities shall stand at the entering of the gate of the city, and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city, they shall take
him into the city unto them, and give
him a place, that he may dwell among them.
When someone flees to one of these cities, stands at the entrance of the city gate, and states his case before its elders, they are to bring him into the city and give him a place to live among them.
Now if the
avenger of blood pursues
him, they must not surrender the
manslayer into his hand, because that man killed his
neighbor accidentally without prior
malice.
But take
diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to
cleave unto
him, and to serve
him with all your heart and with all your soul.
But be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: to love the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, to keep His commandments, to hold fast to Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
And with him ten princes, of each chief house a prince throughout all the tribes of Israel; and each one was an head of the house of their fathers among the thousands of Israel.
With him they sent ten chiefs—one family leader from each tribe of Israel, each the head of a family among the clans of Israel.
That we have built us an altar to turn from following the LORD, or if to offer
thereon burnt offering or meat offering, or if to offer peace offerings
thereon, let the LORD
himself require it;
If we have built for ourselves an altar to turn away from
Him and to offer burnt offerings and grain offerings on it, or to sacrifice
fellowship offerings on it, may the LORD
Himself hold us accountable.
But that it may be a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the LORD before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the LORD.
Rather, let it be a witness between us and you and the generations to come, that we will worship the LORD in His presence with our burnt offerings, sacrifices, and peace offerings.’ Then in the future, your descendants cannot say to ours, ‘You have no share in the LORD!’
God
forbid that we should
rebel against the LORD, and turn this day from following the LORD, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for meat offerings, or for sacrifices, beside the altar of the LORD our God that is before his tabernacle.
Far be it from us to
rebel against the LORD and turn away from
Him today by building an altar for burnt offerings, grain offerings, or sacrifices, other than the altar of the LORD our God, which stands before His tabernacle.”
And when
Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation and heads of the thousands of Israel which were with
him, heard the words that the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the children of
Manasseh spake, it pleased them.
When
Phinehas the priest and the chiefs of the congregation—the heads of Israel’s clans who were with
him—heard what the descendants of
Reuben,
Gad, and
Manasseh had to say, they were satisfied.
And
Phinehas the son of
Eleazar the priest said unto the children of
Reuben, and to the children of
Gad, and to the children of
Manasseh, This day we perceive that the LORD is among us, because ye have not committed this
trespass against the LORD: now ye have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the LORD.
Phinehas son of
Eleazar the priest said to the descendants of
Reuben,
Gad, and
Manasseh, “
Today we know that the LORD is among us, because you have not committed this breach of faith against
Him. Consequently, you have delivered the Israelites from the hand of the LORD.”
And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood, and led
him throughout all the land of
Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave
him Isaac.
But I took your father Abraham from beyond the Euphrates and led
him through all the land of
Canaan, and I multiplied his descendants. I gave
him Isaac,
Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve
him in
sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.
Now, therefore, fear the LORD and serve
Him in
sincerity and truth; cast aside the gods your fathers served beyond the Euphrates and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.
And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against
yourselves that ye have chosen you the LORD, to serve
him. And they said, We are witnesses.
Then Joshua told them, “You are witnesses against
yourselves that you have chosen to serve the LORD.” “We are witnesses!” they said.
And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-serah, which is in mount Ephraim, on the north side of the hill of Gaash.
And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.
And Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the LORD, that he had done for Israel.
Israel had served the LORD throughout the days of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had experienced all the works that the LORD had done for Israel.
And
Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried
him in a hill that
pertained to
Phinehas his son, which was given
him in mount Ephraim.
Eleazar son of Aaron also died, and they buried
him at Gibeah, which had been given to his son
Phinehas in the hill country of Ephraim.
And Judah said unto
Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the
Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So
Simeon went with
him.
Then the men of Judah said to their brothers the Simeonites, “Come up with us to our
allotted territory, and let us fight against the
Canaanites. And we likewise will go with you to your territory.” So the Simeonites went with them.
And there they found Adoni-bezek and fought against
him, striking down the
Canaanites and
Perizzites.
But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.
As Adoni-bezek fled, they pursued
him, seized
him, and cut off his thumbs and
big toes.
And Adoni-bezek said,
Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought
him to Jerusalem, and there he died.
Then Adoni-bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and
big toes cut off have gathered the scraps under my table. As I have done to them, so God has repaid me.” And they brought
him to Jerusalem, where he died.
And
Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjath-sepher, and taketh it, to
him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.
And
Caleb said, “To the man who strikes down Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will give my daughter Acsah in marriage.”
And Othniel the son of Kenaz,
Caleb’s younger brother, took it: and he gave
him Achsah his daughter to wife.
So Othniel son of
Caleb’s younger brother Kenaz captured the city, and
Caleb gave his daughter Acsah to
him in marriage.
And it came to pass, when she came to
him, that she moved
him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her
ass; and
Caleb said unto her, What
wilt thou?
One day Acsah came to Othniel and urged
him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her
donkey,
Caleb asked her, “What do you desire?”
And she said unto
him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And
Caleb gave her the upper springs and the
nether springs.
“Give me a blessing,” she answered. “Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me springs of water as well.” So
Caleb gave her both the upper and lower springs.
And the
spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto
him,
Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will
shew thee mercy.
and when the
spies saw a man coming out of the city, they said to
him, “Please show us how to get into the city, and we will treat you kindly.”
And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the LORD, that he did for Israel.
And the people served the LORD throughout the days of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him, who had seen all the great works that the LORD had done for Israel.
And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side of the hill Gaash.
They buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath-heres in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.
for they
forsook Him and served
Baal and the Ashtoreths.
Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushan-rishathaim king of
Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushan-rishathaim eight years.
Then the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of
Aram-naharaim, and the Israelites served
him eight years.
And the Spirit of the LORD came upon
him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushan-rishathaim king of
Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushan-rishathaim.
The Spirit of the LORD came upon
him, and he became Israel’s judge and went out to war. And the LORD delivered Cushan-rishathaim king of
Aram into the hand of Othniel, who prevailed against
him.
And he gathered unto
him the children of
Ammon and Amalek, and went and
smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.
But when the children of Israel
cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of
Gera, a
Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by
him the children of Israel sent a present unto
Eglon the king of Moab.
And again they
cried out to the LORD, and He raised up Ehud son of
Gera, a left-handed
Benjamite, as their deliverer. So they sent
him with tribute to
Eglon king of Moab.
But he
himself turned again from the
quarries that were by
Gilgal, and said, I have a secret
errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by
him went out from
him.
But upon reaching the idols near
Gilgal, he
himself turned back and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” “Silence,” said the king, and all his attendants left
him.
And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.
Then Ehud approached him while he was sitting alone in the coolness of his upper room. “I have a word from God for you,” Ehud said, and the king rose from his seat.
Then Ehud went forth through the
porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon
him, and locked them.
Then Ehud went out through the
porch, closing and locking the doors of the upper room behind
him.
When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.
After Ehud was gone,
Eglon’s servants came in and found the doors of the upper room locked. “He must be
relieving himself in the cool room,” they said.
And it came to pass, when he was come, that he
blew a
trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with
him from the mount, and he before them.
On arriving in Seirah, he
blew the ram’s horn throughout the hill country of Ephraim. The Israelites came down with
him from the hills, and he became their leader.
And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.
“Follow me,” he told them, “for the LORD has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” So they followed
him down and seized the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow
anyone to cross over.
And after
him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which
slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox
goad: and he also delivered Israel.
After Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath. And he too saved Israel, striking down six hundred Philistines with an
oxgoad.
And she sent and called
Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedesh-
naphtali, and said unto
him, Hath not the LORD God of Israel commanded, saying, Go and draw toward mount
Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of
Naphtali and of the children of
Zebulun?
She summoned
Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in
Naphtali and said to
him, “Surely the LORD, the God of Israel, is commanding you: ‘Go and march to Mount
Tabor, taking with you ten thousand men of
Naphtali and
Zebulun.
And I will draw unto thee to the river
Kishon Sisera, the captain of Jabin’s army, with his
chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver
him into thine hand.
And I will draw out Sisera the commander of Jabin’s army, his
chariots, and his troops to the River
Kishon, and I will deliver
him into your hand.’”
Now
Heber the Kenite, which was of the children of Hobab the father in law of Moses, had severed
himself from the
Kenites, and pitched his tent unto the plain of Zaanaim, which is by Kedesh.
Now
Heber the Kenite had moved away from the
Kenites, the descendants of Hobab the father-in-law of Moses, and had pitched his tent by the great tree of Zaanannim, which was near Kedesh.
And Sisera gathered together all his
chariots, even nine hundred
chariots of iron, and all the people that were with
him, from
Harosheth of the Gentiles unto the river of
Kishon.
he summoned all nine hundred of his iron
chariots and all the men with
him, from
Harosheth-hagoyim to the River
Kishon.
And
Deborah said unto
Barak, Up; for this is the day in which the LORD hath delivered Sisera into thine hand: is not the LORD gone out before thee? So
Barak went down from mount
Tabor, and ten thousand men after
him.
Then
Deborah said to
Barak, “Arise, for this is the day that the LORD has delivered Sisera into your hand. Has not the LORD gone before you?” So
Barak came down from Mount
Tabor with ten thousand men following
him.
And the LORD
discomfited Sisera, and all his
chariots, and all his host, with the edge of the sword before
Barak; so that Sisera lighted down off his
chariot, and fled away on his feet.
And in front of
him the LORD routed with the sword Sisera, all his charioteers, and all his army. Sisera abandoned his
chariot and fled on foot.
And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said unto
him, Turn in, my lord, turn in to me; fear not. And when he had turned in unto her into the tent, she covered
him with a
mantle.
Jael went out to
greet Sisera and said to
him, “Come in, my lord. Come in with me. Do not be afraid.” So he entered her tent, and she covered
him with a
blanket.
And he said unto her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water to drink; for I am
thirsty. And she opened a
bottle of milk, and gave
him drink, and covered
him.
Sisera said to her, “Please give me a little water to drink, for I am
thirsty.” So she opened a container of milk, gave
him a drink, and covered
him again.
Then Jael
Heber’s wife took a
nail of the tent, and took an hammer in her hand, and went softly unto
him, and
smote the
nail into his temples, and fastened it into the ground: for he was fast
asleep and
weary. So he died.
But as he lay sleeping from
exhaustion,
Heber’s wife Jael took a tent
peg,
grabbed a hammer, and went silently to Sisera. She drove the
peg through his temple and into the ground, and he died.
And, behold, as
Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet
him, and said unto
him, Come, and I will
shew thee the man whom thou seekest. And when he came into her tent, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the
nail was in his temples.
When
Barak arrived in pursuit of Sisera, Jael went out to
greet him and said to
him, “Come, and I will show you the man you are seeking.” So he went in with her, and there lay Sisera dead, with a tent
peg through his temple.
And the hand of the children of Israel
prospered, and prevailed against Jabin the king of
Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin king of
Canaan.
And the hand of the Israelites grew stronger and stronger against Jabin king of
Canaan until they destroyed
him.
Then he made him that remaineth have dominion over the nobles among the people: the LORD made me have dominion over the mighty.
Then the survivors came down to the nobles; the people of the LORD came down to me against the mighty.
He asked water, and she gave
him milk; she brought forth butter in a lordly
dish.
He asked for water, and she gave
him milk. In a magnificent
bowl she brought
him curds.
So let all thine enemies perish, O LORD: but let them that love him be as the sun when he goeth forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years.
So may all Your enemies perish, O LORD! But may those who love You
shine like the sun at its brightest.” And the land had rest for forty years.
And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.
And the angel of the LORD appeared to
Gideon and said, “The LORD is with you, O mighty man of
valor.”
And
Gideon said unto
him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this
befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath
forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.
“Please, my Lord,”
Gideon replied, “if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all His wonders of which our fathers told us, saying, ‘Has not the LORD brought us up out of Egypt?’ But now the LORD has
forsaken us and delivered us into the hand of
Midian.”
And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?
The LORD turned to
him and said, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel from the hand of
Midian. Am I not sending you?”
And he said unto
him, Oh my Lord,
wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in
Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.
“Please, my Lord,”
Gideon replied, “how can I save Israel? Indeed, my clan is the weakest in
Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my father’s house.”
And the LORD said unto
him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt
smite the Midianites as one man.
“Surely I will be with you,” the LORD replied, “and you will strike down all the Midianites as one man.”
And he said unto
him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then
shew me a sign that thou talkest with me.
Gideon answered, “If I have found favor in Your sight, give me a sign that it is You speaking with me.
And
Gideon went in, and made ready a
kid, and
unleavened cakes of an
ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a
basket, and he put the
broth in a pot, and brought it out unto
him under the oak, and presented it.
So
Gideon went in and prepared a young goat and
unleavened bread and an
ephah of flour. He placed the meat in a
basket and the
broth in a pot and brought them out to present to
Him under the oak.
And the angel of God said unto
him, Take the flesh and the
unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the
broth. And he did so.
And the angel of God said to
him, “Take the meat and the
unleavened bread, lay them on this rock, and pour out the
broth.” And
Gideon did so.
And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.
But the LORD said to him, “Peace be with you. Do not be afraid, for you will not die.”
And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto
him, Take thy father’s young
bullock, even the second
bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of
Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the
grove that is by it:
On that very night the LORD said to
Gideon, “Take your father’s young bull and a second bull seven years old,
tear down your father’s altar to
Baal, and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.
Then
Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had said unto
him: and so it was, because he feared his father’s household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.
So
Gideon took ten of his servants and did as the LORD had told
him. But because he was too afraid of his father’s household and the men of the city, he did it by night rather than in the
daytime.
And
Joash said unto all that stood against
him, Will ye
plead for
Baal? will ye save
him? he that will
plead for
him, let
him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let
him plead for
himself, because one hath cast down his altar.
But
Joash said to all who stood against
him, “Are you
contending for
Baal? Are you trying to save
him?
Whoever pleads his case will be put to death by morning! If
Baal is a god, let
him contend for
himself with the one who has
torn down his altar.”
Therefore on that day he called
him Jerubbaal, saying, Let
Baal plead against
him, because he hath thrown down his altar.
So on that day
Gideon was called Jerubbaal, that is to say, “Let
Baal contend with
him,” because he had
torn down
Baal’s altar.
But the Spirit of the LORD came upon
Gideon, and he
blew a
trumpet; and Abi-ezer was gathered after
him.
So the Spirit of the LORD came upon
Gideon, who
blew the ram’s horn and
rallied the Abiezrites behind
him.
And he sent messengers throughout all
Manasseh; who also was gathered after
him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto
Zebulun, and unto
Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.
Then Jerubbaal, who is
Gideon, and all the people that were with
him, rose up early, and pitched beside the well of Harod: so that the host of the Midianites were on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.
Early in the morning Jerubbaal (that is,
Gideon) and all the men with
him camped beside the spring of Harod. And the camp of
Midian was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh.
Now therefore go to,
proclaim in the ears of the people, saying,
Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let
him return and depart early from mount
Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand.
Now, therefore,
proclaim in the hearing of the people: ‘
Whoever is fearful and
trembling may turn back and leave Mount
Gilead.’” So twenty-two thousand of them turned back, but ten thousand remained.
So he brought down the people unto the water: and the LORD said unto
Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth,
him shalt thou set by
himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink.
So
Gideon brought the people down to the water, and the LORD said to
him, “Separate those who
lap the water with their tongues like a dog from those who
kneel to drink.”
