How many times shall I
adjure thee that thou say nothing but the truth to me in the name of the LORD?
But the king said to him, “
How many times must I make you
swear not to tell me anything but the truth in the name of the LORD?”
And a certain man drew a bow at a
venture, and
smote the king of Israel between the joints of the
harness: therefore he said to his
chariot man, Turn thine hand, that thou mayest carry me out of the host; for I am wounded.
However, a certain man drew his bow without taking special aim, and he struck the king of Israel between the joints of his
armor. So the king said to his
charioteer, “Turn around and take me out of the battle, for I am badly wounded!”
And the battle increased that day:
howbeit the king of Israel stayed himself up in his
chariot against the Syrians until the even: and about the time of the sun going down he died.
The battle

chariot facing the Arameans until evening. And at
sunset he died.
Nevertheless there are good things found in thee, in that thou hast taken away the groves out of the land, and hast prepared thine heart to seek God.
However, some good is found in you, for you have removed the Asherah poles from the land and have set your heart on seeking God.”
Behold, I say,
how they reward us, to come to cast us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to
inherit.

The high places, however, were not removed; the people had not yet set their hearts on the God of their fathers.
Howbeit the LORD would not destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and as he promised to give a light to him and to his sons for ever.
Yet the LORD was unwilling to destroy the house of David, because of the covenant He had made with David, and since He had promised to maintain a lamp for David and his descendants
forever.

sepulchres of the kings.
Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. He died, to no one’s
regret, and was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.
And he gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, Go out unto the cities of Judah, and gather of all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year, and see that ye
hasten the matter.
Howbeit the Levites
hastened it not.
So he gathered the priests and Levites and said, “Go out to the cities of Judah and collect the money due annually from all Israel, to repair the house of your God. Do it quickly.” The Levites,
however, did not make
haste.
Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah, and made

listened to them.
And
Amaziah strengthened himself, and led forth his people, and went to the valley of salt, and
smote of the children of
Seir ten thousand.
Amaziah,
however, summoned his strength and led his troops to the Valley of Salt, where he struck down 10,000 men of
Seir,
And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Uzziah did:
howbeit he entered not into the temple of the LORD. And the people did yet corruptly.
And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father Uzziah had done. In addition, he did not enter the temple of the LORD. But the people still
behaved corruptly.
But the priests were too few, so that they could not
flay all the burnt offerings: wherefore their brethren the Levites did help them, till the work was ended, and until the other priests had
sanctified themselves: for the Levites were more upright in heart to
sanctify themselves than the priests.
However, since there were not enough priests to skin all the burnt offerings, their
Levite brothers helped them until the work was finished and until the priests had been consecrated. For the Levites had been more
diligent in
consecrating themselves than the priests had been.
Who was there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of mine hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of mine hand?
Who among all the gods of these nations that my fathers devoted to destruction has been able to deliver his people from my hand? How then can your God deliver you from my hand?
Now therefore let not
Hezekiah deceive you, nor
persuade you on this manner, neither yet believe him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand, and out of the hand of my fathers:
how much less shall your God deliver you out of mine hand?
So now, do not let
Hezekiah deceive you, and do not let him mislead you like this. Do not believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people from my hand or from the hand of my fathers.
How much less will your God deliver you from my hand!”
Howbeit in the business of the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who sent unto him to
enquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God left him, to try him, that he might know all that was in his heart.
And so when ambassadors of the rulers of Babylon were sent to him to inquire about the wonder that had happened in the land, God left him alone to test him, that He might know all that was in
Hezekiah’s heart.
His prayer also, and
how God was intreated of him, and all his sin, and his
trespass, and the places wherein he built high places, and set up groves and
graven images, before he was humbled: behold, they are written among the sayings of the seers.
His prayer and
how God received his
plea, as well as all his sin and unfaithfulness, and the sites where he built high places and set up Asherah poles and idols before he humbled himself, they are indeed written in the Records of the Seers.
Nevertheless
Josiah would not turn his face from him, but
disguised himself, that he might fight with him, and
hearkened not unto the words of
Necho from the mouth of God, and came to fight in the valley of
Megiddo.
Josiah,
however, did not turn away from him; instead, in order to
engage him in battle, he
disguised himself. He did not
listen to Neco’s words from the mouth of God, but went to fight him on the Plain of
Megiddo.

Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.
Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in. Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned down. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, so that we will no longer be a disgrace.”
Howbeit thou art just in all that is brought upon us; for thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly:
You are just in all that has
befallen us, because You have acted faithfully, while we have acted wickedly.
Now these are the chief of the province that dwelt in Jerusalem: but in the cities of Judah dwelt every one in his possession in their cities, to wit, Israel, the priests, and the Levites, and the
Nethinims, and the children of Solomon’s servants.
These are the heads of the provinces who settled in Jerusalem. (In the villages of Judah, however, each lived on his own property in their towns—the Israelites, priests, Levites, temple servants, and descendants of Solomon’s servants—
Because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but
hired Balaam against them, that he should
curse them:
howbeit our God turned the
curse into a blessing.

hired Balaam to call down a
curse against them (although our God had turned the
curse into a blessing).

furious, and his anger burned within him.

Mordecai would walk back and forth in front of the court of the

welfare and what was happening to her.
And
Haman told them of the glory of his riches, and the multitude of his children, and all the things wherein the king had promoted him, and
how he had advanced him above the princes and servants of the king.
Haman recounted to them his glorious wealth, his many sons, and all the ways the king had honored and promoted him over the other officials and servants.
For
how can I
endure to see the evil that shall come unto my people? or
how can I
endure to see the destruction of my kindred?
For
how could I bear to see the
disaster that would
befall my people?
How could I bear to see the destruction of my kindred?”
The Jews in
Susa,
however, had assembled on the
thirteenth and the
fourteenth days of the month. So they rested on the
fifteenth day, making it a day of feasting and joy.
So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.
Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights, but no one spoke a word to him because they saw how intense his suffering was.
How much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, which are
crushed before the
moth?
how much more those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundations are in the dust, who can be
crushed like a
moth!
I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause:
However, if I were you, I would appeal to God and lay my cause before Him—
Teach me, and I will hold my tongue: and cause me to understand wherein I have
erred.
Teach me, and I will be silent. Help me understand
how I have
erred.
How forcible are right words! but what
doth your
arguing reprove?
How painful are
honest words! But what does your argument prove?
Will You never look away from me, or leave me alone to
swallow my
spittle?
How long
wilt thou speak these things? and
how long shall the words of thy mouth be like a strong wind?
“
How long will you go on saying such things? The words of your mouth are a
blustering wind.
I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just with God?
“
Yes, I know that it is so, but
how can a
mortal be righteous before God?
How much less shall I answer him, and choose out my words to reason with him?
How then can I answer Him or choose my arguments against Him?
But ye are forgers of lies, ye are all physicians of no value.
You,
however,
smear with lies; you are all worthless physicians.
how much less man, who is
vile and corrupt, who drinks injustice like water?
Though I speak, my grief is not asswaged: and though I
forbear, what am I eased?
Even if I speak, my pain is not relieved, and if I hold back, how will it go away?
How long will it be
ere ye make an end of words? mark, and afterwards we will speak.
“How long until you end these speeches? Show some sense, and then we can talk.
How long will ye
vex my soul, and break me in pieces with words?
Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my
reins be consumed within me.
I will see Him for myself; my eyes will behold Him, and not as a stranger. How my heart yearns within me!
How oft is the
candle of the wicked put out! and
how oft cometh their destruction upon them! God distributeth sorrows in his anger.
How often is the lamp of the wicked put out? Does
disaster come upon them? Does God, in His anger,
apportion destruction?
How then comfort ye me in vain, seeing in your answers there remaineth
falsehood?
So
how can you comfort me with empty words? For your answers remain full of
falsehood.”
Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are!
Is not God as high as the heavens? Look at the highest stars, how lofty they are!
And thou sayest,
How doth God know? can he judge through the dark cloud?
Yet you say: ‘What does God know? Does He judge through thick darkness?
I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say unto me.
I would learn how He would answer, and consider what He would say.
How then can man be justified with God? or how can he be clean that is born of a woman?
How then can a man be just before God? How can one born of woman be pure?
How much less man, that is a worm? and the son of man, which is a worm?
how much less man, who is but a
maggot, and the son of man, who is but a worm!”
How hast thou helped him that is without power? how savest thou the arm that hath no strength?
“How you have helped the powerless and saved the arm that is feeble!
How hast thou counseled him that hath no wisdom? and
how hast thou
plentifully declared the thing as it is?
How you have counseled the unwise and provided fully sound insight!
Lo, these are parts of his ways: but
how little a portion is heard of him? but the
thunder of his power who can understand?
Indeed, these are but the fringes of His ways;
how faint is the
whisper we hear of Him! Who then can understand the
thunder of His power?”
Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me;
“How I long for the months gone by, for the days when God watched over me,
Howbeit he will not stretch out his hand to the grave, though they cry in his destruction.
Yet no one stretches out his hand to a ruined man when he
cries for help in his distress.
I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a
maid?
“I have made a covenant with my eyes.
How then could I
gaze with desire at a virgin?
What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?
what will I do when God rises to judge? How will I answer when called to account?
For I know not to give
flattering titles; in so doing my maker would soon take me away.
For I do not know
how to
flatter, or my Maker would remove me in an instant.
How much less to him that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands.
who is not partial to princes and does not favor rich over poor? For they are all the work of His hands.
Although thou sayest thou shalt not see him, yet judgment is before him; therefore trust thou in him.
How much less, then, when you say that you do not see Him, that your case is before Him and you must wait for Him,
Then he sheweth them their work, and their transgressions that they have exceeded.
Also can any understand the spreadings of the clouds, or the noise of his tabernacle?
Behold, he spreadeth his light upon it, and covereth the bottom of the sea.
See
how He scatters His
lightning around Him and covers the depths of the sea.
Dost thou know when God disposed them, and caused the light of his cloud to
shine?
Do you know
how God dispatches the clouds or makes the
lightning flash?
Dost thou know the balancings of the clouds, the
wondrous works of him which is perfect in knowledge?
Do you understand
how the clouds
float, those wonders of Him who is perfect in knowledge?
How thy garments are warm, when he quieteth the earth by the south wind?
You whose clothes get hot when the land lies
hushed under the south wind,
Behold, I am
vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth.
“Behold, I am insignificant. How can I reply to You? I place my hand over my mouth.
LORD, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me.
O LORD, how my foes have increased! How many rise up against me!
O ye sons of men,
how long will ye turn my glory into shame?
how long will ye love vanity, and seek after
leasing?
Selah.
How long, O men, will my honor be
maligned?
How long will you love vanity and seek after lies?
Selah My soul is also
sore vexed: but thou, O LORD,
how long?
My soul is deeply distressed. How long, O LORD, how long?
O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.
O LORD, our Lord,
how majestic is Your name in all the earth! You have set Your glory above the heavens.
O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!
O LORD, our Lord,
how majestic is Your name in all the earth!
Have mercy upon me, O LORD; consider my trouble which I suffer of them that
hate me, thou that liftest me up from the gates of death:
Be
merciful to me, O LORD; see
how my enemies
afflict me! Lift me up from the gates of death,
In the LORD put I my trust:
How say ye to my soul,
Flee as a bird to your mountain?
In the LORD I take refuge.
How then can you say to me: “
Flee like a bird to your mountain!
How long
wilt thou
forget me, O LORD? for ever?
how long
wilt thou hide thy face from me?
How long, O LORD? Will You
forget me
forever?
How long will You hide Your face from me?
How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily?
how long shall mine enemy be
exalted over me?
How long must I
wrestle in my soul, with sorrow in my heart each day?
How long will my enemy
dominate me?
The king shall joy in thy strength, O LORD; and in thy salvation
how greatly shall he
rejoice!
O LORD, the king rejoices in Your strength. How greatly he exults in Your salvation!
Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men!
How great is Your goodness which You have laid up for those who fear You, which You have bestowed before the sons of men on those who take refuge in You!
Lord,
how long
wilt thou look on?
rescue my soul from their destructions, my
darling from the lions.
How long, O Lord, will You look on?
Rescue my soul from their ravages, my precious life from these lions.
How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.
How precious is Your loving devotion, O God, that the children of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings!
LORD, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know
how frail I am.
“Show me, O LORD, my end and the measure of my days. Let me know how fleeting my life is.
When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept
holyday.
These things come to mind as I pour out my soul:
how I walked with the multitude, leading the
procession to the house of God with shouts of joy and praise.
How thou
didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them;
how thou
didst afflict the people, and cast them out.
With Your hand You drove out the nations and planted our fathers there; You
crushed the peoples and cast them out.
For the LORD most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth.
How awesome is the LORD Most High, the great King over all the earth!
But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth?
To the wicked,
however, God says, “What right have you to
recite My statutes and to bear My covenant on your lips?
Lo, then would I
wander far off, and remain in the wilderness.
Selah.
How far away I would
flee! In the wilderness I would remain.
Selah For, lo, they lie in wait for my soul: the mighty are gathered against me; not for my
transgression, nor for my sin, O LORD.
See
how they lie in wait for me. Fierce men
conspire against me for no
transgression or sin of my own, O LORD.
How long will ye imagine mischief against a man? ye shall be slain all of you: as a bowing wall shall ye be, and as a
tottering fence.
Say unto God, How terrible art thou in thy works! through the greatness of thy power shall thine enemies submit themselves unto thee.
Say to God, “
How awesome are Your deeds! So great is Your power that Your enemies cower before You.
Come and see the works of God: he is terrible in his doing toward the children of men.
Come and see the works of God;
how awesome are His deeds toward mankind.
And they say,
How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High?
The wicked say, “How can God know? Does the Most High have knowledge?”
How are they brought into
desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors.
How suddenly they are laid waste, completely swept away by terrors!
We see not our signs: there is no more any prophet: neither is there among us any that knoweth how long.
There are no signs for us to see. There is no longer any prophet. And none of us knows how long this will last.
O God,
how long shall the
adversary reproach? shall the enemy
blaspheme thy name for ever?
Remember this, that the enemy hath reproached, O LORD, and that the
foolish people have
blasphemed thy name.
Arise, O God,
plead thine own cause: remember
how the
foolish man reproacheth thee daily.
Rise up, O God; defend Your cause! Remember
how the
fool mocks You all day long.
