Then answered David and said to
Ahimelech the Hittite, and to
Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother to
Joab, saying, Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp? And
Abishai said, I will go down with thee.
And David asked
Ahimelech the Hittite and
Abishai son of Zeruiah,
Joab’s brother, “Who will go down with me to Saul in the camp?” “I will go with you,” answered
Abishai.
And
Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met together by the
pool of
Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one side of the
pool, and the other on the other side of the
pool.
So
Joab son of Zeruiah, along with the servants of David, marched out and met them by the
pool of
Gibeon. And the two camps took up positions on opposite sides of the
pool.
And
Abner said to
Joab, Let the young men now arise, and play before us. And
Joab said, Let them arise.
Then
Abner said to
Joab, “Let us have the young men get up and
compete before us.” “Let them get up,”
Joab replied.
And there were three sons of Zeruiah there,
Joab, and
Abishai, and
Asahel: and
Asahel was as light of foot as a wild
roe.
And
Abner said again to
Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I
smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to
Joab thy brother?
Once again,
Abner warned Asahel, “Stop
chasing me. Why should I strike you to the ground? How could I show my face to your brother
Joab?”
Joab also and
Abishai pursued after
Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of
Gibeon.
But
Joab and
Abishai pursued
Abner. By
sunset, they had gone as far as the hill of Ammah opposite Giah on the way to the wilderness of
Gibeon.
Then
Abner called to
Joab, and said, Shall the sword
devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then,
ere thou
bid the people return from following their brethren?
Then
Abner called out to
Joab: “Must the sword
devour forever? Do you not
realize that this will only end in bitterness? How long before you tell the troops to stop pursuing their brothers?”
And Joab said, As God liveth, unless thou hadst spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother.
“As surely as God lives,” Joab replied, “if you had not spoken up, the troops would have continued pursuing their brothers until morning.”
So
Joab blew a
trumpet, and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more.
So
Joab blew the ram’s horn, and all the troops stopped; they no longer pursued Israel or continued to fight.
And
Joab returned from following
Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David’s servants
nineteen men and
Asahel.
When
Joab returned from pursuing
Abner, he gathered all the troops. In addition to
Asahel,
nineteen of David’s servants were missing,
And they took up
Asahel, and buried him in the
sepulchre of his father, which was in
Bethlehem. And
Joab and his men went all night, and they came to
Hebron at break of day.
Later, they took
Asahel and buried him in his father’s tomb in
Bethlehem. Then
Joab and his men marched all night and reached
Hebron at
daybreak.
And, Behold, the servants of David and
Joab came from pursuing a
troop, and brought in a great
spoil with them: but
Abner was not with David in
Hebron; for he had sent him away, and he was gone in peace.
Just then David’s soldiers and
Joab returned from a
raid, bringing with them a great
plunder. But
Abner was not with David in
Hebron because David had sent him on his way in peace.
When
Joab and all the host that was with him were come, they told
Joab, saying,
Abner the son of
Ner came to the king, and he hath sent him away, and he is gone in peace.
When
Joab and all his troops arrived, he was informed, “
Abner son of
Ner came to see the king, who sent him on his way in peace.”
Then
Joab came to the king, and said, What hast thou done? behold,
Abner came unto thee; why is it that thou hast sent him away, and he is quite gone?
So
Joab went to the king and said, “What have you done? Look,
Abner came to you. Why did you dismiss him? Now he is getting away!
And when
Joab was come out from David, he sent messengers after
Abner, which brought him again from the well of Sirah: but David knew it not.
As soon as
Joab had left David, he sent messengers after
Abner, who brought him back from the well of Sirah; but David was unaware of it.
And when
Abner was returned to
Hebron,
Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and
smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of
Asahel his brother.
When
Abner returned to
Hebron,
Joab pulled him aside into the
gateway, as if to speak to him privately, and there
Joab stabbed him in the stomach. So
Abner died on account of the blood of
Joab’s brother
Asahel.
Let it rest on the head of
Joab, and on all his father’s house; and let there not fail from the house of
Joab one that hath an issue, or that is a
leper, or that leaneth on a staff, or that falleth on the sword, or that lacketh bread.
May it
whirl over the heads of
Joab and the entire house of his father, and may the house of
Joab never be without one having a discharge or skin disease, or one who leans on a staff or falls by the sword or lacks food.”
And David said to
Joab, and to all the people that were with him,
Rend your clothes, and
gird you with
sackcloth, and
mourn before
Abner. And king David himself followed the
bier.
Then David ordered
Joab and all the people with him, “
Tear your clothes, put on
sackcloth, and
mourn before
Abner.” And King David himself walked behind the funeral
bier.
And
Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the host; and
Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder;
Joab son of Zeruiah was over the army;
Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was the recorder;
And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.
On hearing this, David sent Joab and the entire army of mighty men.
When
Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in
array against the Syrians:
When
Joab saw the battle lines before him and behind him, he selected some of the best men of Israel and
arrayed them against the Arameans.
And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of
Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.
“If the Arameans are too strong for me,” said
Joab, “then you will come to my
rescue. And if the
Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come to your
rescue.
And
Joab drew
nigh, and the people that were with him, unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.
So Joab and his troops advanced to fight the Arameans, who fled before him.
And when the children of
Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, then fled they also before
Abishai, and entered into the city. So
Joab returned from the children of
Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.
When the
Ammonites saw that the Arameans had fled, they too fled before
Abishai, and they entered the city. So
Joab returned from fighting against the
Ammonites and came to Jerusalem.
And it came to pass, after the year was
expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent
Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of
Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David
tarried still at Jerusalem.
In the spring, at the time when kings march out to war, David sent out
Joab and his servants with the whole army of Israel. They destroyed the
Ammonites and besieged Rabbah, but David remained in Jerusalem.
And David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David.
At this, David sent orders to Joab: “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” So Joab sent him to David.
And when Uriah was come unto him, David demanded of him how
Joab did, and how the people did, and how the war
prospered.
When Uriah came to him, David asked how Joab and the troops were doing with the war.
And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah,
abide in tents; and my lord
Joab, and the servants of my lord, are
encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.
Uriah answered, “The ark and Israel and Judah are dwelling in tents, and my master Joab and his soldiers are camped in the open field. How can I go to my house to eat and drink and sleep with my wife? As surely as you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do such a thing!”
And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.
The next morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah.
And it came to pass, when
Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that
valiant men were.
So as Joab besieged the city, he assigned Uriah to a place where he saw the strongest enemy soldiers.
And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.
And when the men of the city came out and fought against Joab, some of David’s servants fell, and Uriah the Hittite also died.
Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war;
Joab sent to David a full account of the battle
So the
messenger went, and came and shewed David all that
Joab had sent him for.
So the
messenger set out and reported to David all that
Joab had sent him to say.
Then David said unto the
messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto
Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another: make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and
encourage thou him.
Then David told the
messenger, “Say this to
Joab: ‘Do not let this matter
upset you, for the sword devours one as well as another.
Strengthen your attack against the city and
demolish it.’
Encourage him with these words.”
And
Joab fought against Rabbah of the children of
Ammon, and took the royal city.
Meanwhile,
Joab fought against Rabbah of the
Ammonites and captured the royal fortress.
And Joab sent messengers to David, and said, I have fought against Rabbah, and have taken the city of waters.
Then Joab sent messengers to David to say, “I have fought against Rabbah and have captured the water supply of the city.
Now
Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king’s heart was toward
Absalom.
Now
Joab son of Zeruiah perceived that the king’s heart longed for
Absalom.
So
Joab sent to Tekoa to bring a wise woman from there. He told her, “Please pretend to be a
mourner; put on clothes for
mourning and do not
anoint yourself with oil. Act like a woman who has
mourned for the dead a long time.
And come to the king, and speak on this manner unto him. So Joab put the words in her mouth.
Then go to the king and speak these words to him.” And Joab put the words in her mouth.
And the king said, Is not the hand of
Joab with thee in all this? And the woman answered and said, As thy soul liveth, my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from ought that my lord the king hath spoken: for thy servant
Joab, he
bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of thine
handmaid:
So the king asked, “Is the hand of
Joab behind all this?” The woman answered, “As surely as you live, my lord the king, no one can turn to the right or to the left from anything that my lord the king says.
Yes, your servant
Joab is the one who gave me orders; he told your
maidservant exactly what to say.
To
fetch about this form of speech hath thy servant
Joab done this thing: and my lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.
Joab your servant has done this to bring about this change of affairs, but my lord has wisdom like the wisdom of the angel of God, to know everything that happens in the land.”
And the king said unto
Joab, Behold now, I have done this thing: go therefore, bring the young man
Absalom again.
Then the king said to
Joab, “I
hereby grant this request. Go, bring back the young man
Absalom.”
And
Joab fell to the ground on his face, and bowed himself, and
thanked the king: and
Joab said,
Today thy servant knoweth that I have found grace in thy sight, my lord, O king, in that the king hath fulfilled the request of his servant.
Joab fell facedown in
homage and blessed the king. “
Today,” said
Joab, “your servant knows that he has found favor with you, my lord the king, because the king has granted his request.”
So
Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought
Absalom to Jerusalem.
So
Joab got up, went to Geshur, and brought
Absalom to Jerusalem.
Therefore
Absalom sent for
Joab, to have sent him to the king; but he would not come to him: and when he sent again the second time, he would not come.
Then he sent for
Joab to send him to the king, but
Joab refused to come to him. So
Absalom sent a second time, but
Joab still would not come.
Therefore he said unto his servants, See,
Joab’s field is near mine, and he hath barley there; go and set it on fire. And
Absalom’s servants set the field on fire.
Then
Absalom said to his servants, “Look,
Joab’s field is next to mine, and he has barley there. Go and set it on fire!” And
Absalom’s servants set the field on fire.
Then
Joab arose, and came to
Absalom unto his house, and said unto him, Wherefore have thy servants set my field on fire?
Then
Joab came to
Absalom’s house and demanded, “Why did your servants set my field on fire?”
And
Absalom answered
Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come
hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it had been good for me to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king’s face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me.
“Look,” said
Absalom, “I sent for you and said, ‘Come here. I want to send you to the king to ask: Why have I come back from Geshur? It would be better for me if I were still there.’ So now, let me see the king’s face, and if there is iniquity in me, let him kill me.”
So
Joab came to the king, and told him: and when he had called for
Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king: and the king
kissed Absalom.
So
Joab went and told the king, and David summoned
Absalom, who came to him and bowed facedown before him. Then the king
kissed Absalom.
And
Absalom made
Amasa captain of the host instead of
Joab: which
Amasa was a man’s son, whose name was Ithra an
Israelite, that went in to
Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah
Joab’s mother.
Absalom had appointed
Amasa over the army in place of
Joab.
Amasa was the son of a man named Ithra, the
Ishmaelite who had married
Abigail, the daughter of Nahash and sister of Zeruiah the mother of
Joab.
And David sent forth a third part of the people under the hand of
Joab, and a third part under the hand of
Abishai the son of Zeruiah,
Joab’s brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said unto the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also.
He sent out the troops, a third under
Joab, a third under
Joab’s brother
Abishai son of Zeruiah, and a third under Ittai the Gittite. And the king said to the troops, “I will surely march out with you as well.”
And the king commanded
Joab and
Abishai and Ittai, saying, Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with
Absalom. And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning
Absalom.
Now the king had commanded
Joab,
Abishai, and Ittai, “Treat the young man
Absalom gently for my sake.” And all the people heard the king’s orders to each of the commanders regarding
Absalom.
And a certain man saw it, and told
Joab, and said, Behold, I saw
Absalom hanged in an oak.
When one of the men saw this, he told
Joab, “I just saw
Absalom hanging in an oak tree!”
And
Joab said unto the man that told him, And, behold, thou sawest him, and why
didst thou not
smite him there to the ground? and I would have given thee ten shekels of silver, and a
girdle.
“You just saw him!”
Joab exclaimed. “Why did you not strike him to the ground right there? I would have given you ten shekels of silver and a
warrior’s belt!”
And the man said unto
Joab, Though I should receive a thousand shekels of silver in mine hand, yet would I not put forth mine hand against the king’s son: for in our hearing the king charged thee and
Abishai and Ittai, saying,
Beware that none touch the young man
Absalom.
The man replied, “Even if a thousand shekels of silver were
weighed out into my hands, I would not raise my hand against the son of the king. For we heard the king command you and
Abishai and Ittai, ‘Protect the young man
Absalom for my sake.’
Then said
Joab, I may not
tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of
Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.
But
Joab declared, “I am not going to wait like this with you!” And he took three spears in his hand and thrust them through the heart of
Absalom while he was still alive in the oak tree.
And ten young men that bare
Joab’s armour compassed about and
smote Absalom, and
slew him.
And ten young men who carried
Joab’s
armor surrounded
Absalom, struck him, and killed him.
And
Joab blew the
trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel: for
Joab held back the people.
Then
Joab blew the ram’s horn, and the troops broke off their pursuit of Israel because
Joab had restrained them.
And
Joab said unto him, Thou shalt not bear
tidings this day, but thou shalt bear
tidings another day: but this day thou shalt bear no
tidings, because the king’s son is dead.
But
Joab replied, “You are not the man to take good news
today. You may do it another day, but you must not do so
today, because the king’s son is dead.”
Then said Joab to Cushi, Go tell the king what thou hast seen. And Cushi bowed himself unto Joab, and ran.
So
Joab said to a
Cushite, “Go, tell the king what you have seen.” The
Cushite bowed to
Joab and took off running.
Then said
Ahimaaz the son of
Zadok yet again to
Joab, But
howsoever, let me, I pray thee, also run after Cushi. And
Joab said, Wherefore
wilt thou run, my son, seeing that thou hast no
tidings ready?
Ahimaaz son of
Zadok, however,
persisted and said to
Joab, “Regardless of whatever may happen, please let me also run behind the
Cushite!” “My son,”
Joab replied, “why do you want to run, since you will not receive a reward?”
But
howsoever, said he, let me run. And he said unto him, Run. Then
Ahimaaz ran by the way of the plain, and overran Cushi.
“No matter what, I want to run!” he replied. “Then run!”
Joab told him. So
Ahimaaz ran by way of the plain and outran the
Cushite.
And the king said, Is the young man
Absalom safe? And
Ahimaaz answered, When
Joab sent the king’s servant, and me thy servant, I saw a great
tumult, but I knew not what it was.
The king asked, “Is the young man
Absalom all right?” And
Ahimaaz replied, “When
Joab sent the king’s servant and your servant, I saw a great
tumult, but I do not know what it was.”
And it was told
Joab, Behold, the king weepeth and mourneth for
Absalom.
And Joab came into the house to the king, and said, Thou hast shamed this day the faces of all thy servants, which this day have saved thy life, and the lives of thy sons and of thy daughters, and the lives of thy wives, and the lives of thy concubines;
Then
Joab went into the house and said to the king, “
Today you have disgraced all your servants who have saved your life and the lives of your sons and daughters, of your wives, and of your concubines.
And say ye to
Amasa, Art thou not of my bone, and of my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the room of
Joab.
And say to
Amasa, ‘Aren’t you my flesh and blood? May God
punish me, and ever so severely, if from this time you are not the commander of my army in place of
Joab!’”
And there went out after him
Joab’s men, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and all the mighty men: and they went out of Jerusalem, to pursue after
Sheba the son of Bichri.
So
Joab’s men, along with the Cherethites, the Pelethites, and all the mighty men, marched out of Jerusalem in pursuit of
Sheba son of Bichri.
When they were at the great stone which is in
Gibeon,
Amasa went before them. And
Joab’s garment that he had put on was
girded unto him, and upon it a
girdle with a sword fastened upon his loins in the
sheath thereof; and as he went forth it fell out.
And
Joab said to
Amasa, Art thou in health, my brother? And
Joab took
Amasa by the
beard with the right hand to
kiss him.
But
Amasa took no
heed to the sword that was in
Joab’s hand: so he
smote him
therewith in the fifth rib, and shed out his
bowels to the ground, and struck him not again; and he died. So
Joab and
Abishai his brother pursued after
Sheba the son of Bichri.
Amasa was not on guard against the
dagger in
Joab’s hand, and
Joab stabbed him in the stomach and
spilled out his intestines on the ground. And
Joab did not need to strike him again, for
Amasa was dead. Then
Joab and his brother
Abishai pursued
Sheba son of Bichri.
And one of Joab’s men stood by him, and said, He that favoureth Joab, and he that is for David, let him go after Joab.
One of
Joab’s young men stood near
Amasa and said, “
Whoever favors
Joab, and
whoever is for David, let him follow
Joab!”
When he was removed out of the
highway, all the people went on after
Joab, to pursue after
Sheba the son of Bichri.
As soon as
Amasa’s body was removed from the road, all the men went on with
Joab to pursue
Sheba son of Bichri.
And they came and besieged him in
Abel of Beth-maachah, and they cast up a bank against the city, and it stood in the
trench: and all the people that were with
Joab battered the wall, to throw it down.
Then
cried a wise woman out of the city, Hear, hear; say, I pray you, unto
Joab, Come near
hither, that I may speak with thee.
a wise woman called out from the city, “
Listen!
Listen! Please tell
Joab to come here so that I may speak with him.”
And when he was come near unto her, the woman said, Art thou
Joab? And he answered, I am he. Then she said unto him, Hear the words of thine
handmaid. And he answered, I do hear.
When he had come near to her, the woman asked, “Are you
Joab?” “I am,” he replied. “
Listen to the words of your servant,” she said. “I am
listening,” he answered.
And
Joab answered and said, Far be it, far be it from me, that I should
swallow up or destroy.
“Far be it!”
Joab declared. “Far be it from me to
swallow up or destroy!
The matter is not so: but a man of mount Ephraim,
Sheba the son of Bichri by name, hath lifted up his hand against the king, even against David: deliver him only, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said unto
Joab, Behold, his head shall be thrown to thee over the wall.
That is not the case. But a man named
Sheba son of Bichri, from the hill country of Ephraim, has lifted up his hand against the king, against David. Deliver him alone, and I will depart from the city.” “Look,” the woman replied, “his head will be thrown to you over the wall.”
Then the woman went unto all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of
Sheba the son of Bichri, and cast it out to
Joab. And he
blew a
trumpet, and they retired from the city, every man to his tent. And
Joab returned to Jerusalem unto the king.
Then the woman went to all the people with her wise counsel, and they cut off the head of
Sheba son of Bichri and threw it to
Joab. So he
blew the ram’s horn and his men
dispersed from the city, each to his own home. And
Joab returned to the king in Jerusalem.
Now Joab was over all the host of Israel: and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and over the Pelethites:
Now Joab was over the whole army of Israel; Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and Pelethites;
And
Abishai, the brother of
Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief among three. And he lifted up his
spear against three hundred, and
slew them, and had the name among three.
Now
Abishai, the brother of
Joab and son of Zeruiah, was chief of the Three, and he lifted his
spear against three hundred men, killed them, and won a name along with the Three.
Now these were members of the Thirty:
Asahel the brother of
Joab, Elhanan son of
Dodo of
Bethlehem,
Zelek the
Ammonite, Nahari the Beerothite, armourbearer to
Joab the son of Zeruiah,
Zelek the
Ammonite, Naharai the Beerothite, the
armor-bearer of
Joab son of Zeruiah,
For the king said to
Joab the captain of the host, which was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israel, from
Dan even to Beer-
sheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the number of the people.
So the king said to
Joab the commander of his army, who was with him, “Go now throughout the tribes of Israel from
Dan to
Beersheba and register the troops, so that I may know their number.”
And
Joab said unto the king, Now the LORD thy God add unto the people, how many
soever they be, an
hundredfold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it: but why
doth my lord the king delight in this thing?
But Joab replied to the king, “May the LORD your God multiply the troops a hundred times over, and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king want to do such a thing?”
Notwithstanding the king’s word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.
Nevertheless, the king’s word prevailed against Joab and against the commanders of the army. So Joab and the commanders of the army departed from the presence of the king to count the troops of Israel.
And
Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand
valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.
And
Joab reported to the king the total number of the troops. In Israel there were 800,000 men of
valor who drew the sword, and in Judah there were 500,000.
And he conferred with
Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with
Abiathar the priest: and they following Adonijah helped him.
So Adonijah conferred with
Joab son of Zeruiah and with
Abiathar the priest, who supported him.
And he hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the sons of the king, and
Abiathar the priest, and
Joab the captain of the host: but Solomon thy servant hath he not called.
And he has sacrificed an abundance of oxen,
fattened calves, and sheep, and has invited all the other sons of the king, as well as
Abiathar the priest and
Joab the commander of the army. But he did not
invite your servant Solomon.
And Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating. And when
Joab heard the sound of the
trumpet, he said, Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an
uproar?
Now Adonijah and all his guests were finishing their feast when they heard the sound of the ram’s horn. “Why is the city in such a loud
uproar?” asked
Joab.
Moreover thou knowest also what
Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, and what he did to the two captains of the hosts of Israel, unto
Abner the son of
Ner, and unto
Amasa the son of Jether, whom he
slew, and shed the blood of war in peace, and put the blood of war upon his
girdle that was about his loins, and in his
shoes that were on his feet.
Moreover, you know what
Joab son of Zeruiah did to me—what he did to
Abner son of
Ner and
Amasa son of Jether, the two commanders of the armies of Israel. He killed them in peacetime to
avenge the blood of war. He
stained with the blood of war the belt around his
waist and the
sandals on his feet.
And king Solomon answered and said unto his mother, And why
dost thou ask
Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? ask for him the kingdom also; for he is mine elder brother; even for him, and for
Abiathar the priest, and for
Joab the son of Zeruiah.
King Solomon answered his mother, “Why do you request
Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? Since he is my older brother, you might as well request the kingdom for him and for
Abiathar the priest and for
Joab son of Zeruiah!”
Then
tidings came to
Joab: for
Joab had turned after Adonijah, though he turned not after
Absalom. And
Joab fled unto the tabernacle of the LORD, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.
When the news reached
Joab, who had
conspired with Adonijah but not with
Absalom, he fled to the tent of the LORD and took hold of the horns of the altar.
And it was told king Solomon that Joab was fled unto the tabernacle of the LORD; and, behold, he is by the altar. Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, Go, fall upon him.
It was reported to King Solomon: “Joab has fled to the tent of the LORD and is now beside the altar.” So Solomon sent Benaiah son of Jehoiada, saying, “Go, strike him down!”
And Benaiah came to the tabernacle of the LORD, and said unto him, Thus saith the king, Come forth. And he said,
Nay; but I will die here. And Benaiah brought the king word again, saying, Thus said
Joab, and thus he answered me.
And Benaiah entered the tent of the LORD and said to Joab, “The king says, ‘Come out!’” But Joab replied, “No, I will die here.” So Benaiah relayed the message to the king, saying, “This is how Joab answered me.”
And the king said unto him, Do as he hath said, and fall upon him, and
bury him; that thou mayest take away the innocent blood, which
Joab shed, from me, and from the house of my father.
And the king replied, “Do just as he says. Strike him down and
bury him, and so remove from me and from the house of my father the innocent blood that
Joab shed.
Their blood shall therefore return upon the head of Joab, and upon the head of his seed for ever: but upon David, and upon his seed, and upon his house, and upon his throne, shall there be peace for ever from the LORD.
Their blood will come back upon the heads of
Joab and his descendants
forever; but for David, his descendants, his house, and his throne, there shall be peace from the LORD
forever.”
So Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up, and fell upon him, and
slew him: and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness.
So Benaiah son of Jehoiada went up, struck down Joab, and killed him. He was buried at his own home in the wilderness.
And the king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his room over the host: and
Zadok the priest did the king put in the room of
Abiathar.
And the king appointed Benaiah son of Jehoiada in
Joab’s place over the army, and he appointed
Zadok the priest in
Abiathar’s place.
For it came to pass, when David was in
Edom, and
Joab the captain of the host was gone up to
bury the slain, after he had
smitten every male in
Edom;
Earlier, when David was in
Edom,
Joab the commander of the army had gone to
bury the dead and had struck down every male in
Edom.
