robe and bring it to him when she went with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice.
And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to offer upon mine altar, to burn incense, to wear an
ephod before me? and did I give unto the house of thy father all the offerings
made by fire of the children of Israel?
And out of all the tribes of Israel I selected your father to be My priest, to offer sacrifices on My altar, to burn incense, and to wear an
ephod in My presence. I also gave to the house of your father all the offerings of the Israelites
made by fire.
For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons
made themselves
vile, and he restrained them not.
I told him that I would judge his house
forever for the iniquity of which he knows, because his sons
blasphemed God and he did not restrain them.
And it came to pass, when he
made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck

Gilgal; and there they
made Saul king before the LORD in
Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel
rejoiced greatly.
So all the people went to
Gilgal and confirmed Saul as king in the presence of the LORD. There they sacrificed peace offerings before the LORD, and Saul and all the Israelites
rejoiced greatly.
And Samuel said unto all Israel, Behold, I have
hearkened unto your voice in all that ye said unto me, and have
made a king over you.

listened to your voice in all that you have said to me, and I have set over you a king.
When Jacob was come into Egypt, and your fathers
cried unto the LORD, then the LORD sent Moses and Aaron, which brought forth your fathers out of Egypt, and
made them dwell in this place.

And it came to pass, that as soon as he had
made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might
salute him.

greet him.
Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to
Gilgal, and I have not
made supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.
I thought, ‘Now the Philistines will descend upon me at

It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it
grieved Samuel; and he
cried unto the LORD all night.
“I
regret that I have
made Saul king, for he has turned away from following Me and has not carried out My instructions.” And Samuel was distressed and
cried out to the LORD all that night.
And Samuel said, When thou
wast little in thine own sight,
wast thou not
made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD
anointed thee king over Israel?
And Samuel said, “Although you were once small in your own eyes, have you not become the head of the tribes of Israel? The LORD
anointed you king over Israel
And Samuel said, As thy sword hath
made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel

hacked Agag to pieces before the LORD at

regretted that He had
made Saul king over Israel.
Then
Jesse called Abinadab, and
made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.
Then
Jesse called Abinadab and presented him to Samuel, who said, “The LORD has not chosen this one either.”
Then
Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.
Next
Jesse presented Shammah, but Samuel said, “The LORD has not chosen this one either.”
Again,
Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto
Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these.

And it came to pass, when he had
made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of
Jonathan was
knit with the soul of David, and
Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
After David had finished speaking with Saul, the souls of
Jonathan and David were
knit together, and
Jonathan loved him as himself.
Then
Jonathan and David
made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.
Then
Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself.
Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.

feigned himself
mad in their hands, and
scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and let his
spittle fall down upon his
beard.
Then said Achish unto his servants, Lo, ye see the man is mad: wherefore then have ye brought him to me?
Then Achish said to his servants, “Look, you can see that the man is
insane! Why have you brought him to me?
Have I need of mad men, that ye have brought this fellow to play the mad man in my presence? shall this fellow come into my house?
Am I in need of
madmen, that you have brought this man to
rave in my presence? Must this man come into my house?”
That all of you have
conspired against me, and there is none that sheweth me that my son hath
made a league with the son of
Jesse, and there is none of you that is
sorry for me, or sheweth unto me that my son hath
stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?
Is that why all of you have
conspired against me? Not one of you told me that my own son had
made a covenant with the son of
Jesse. Not one of you has shown
concern for me or revealed to me that my son has
stirred up my own servant to lie in wait against me, as is the case
today.”
And they two
made a covenant before the LORD: and David abode in the wood, and
Jonathan went to his house.

And Saul went on this side of the mountain, and David and his men on that side of the mountain: and David
made haste to get away for fear of Saul; for Saul and his men compassed David and his men round about to take them.

hurrying to get away, Saul and his men were closing in on David and his men to capture them.
And it came to pass, when David had
made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and
wept.

wept aloud Then

loaves, and two bottles of wine, and five sheep ready dressed, and five measures of
parched corn, and an hundred clusters of
raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on

And Achish said,
Whither have ye
made a road to day? And David said, Against the south of Judah, and against the south of the Jerahmeelites, and against the south of the
Kenites.
who would ask him, “What have you
raided today?” And David would reply, “The Negev of Judah,” or “The Negev of Jerahmeel,” or “The Negev of the
Kenites.”
And Achish believed David, saying, He hath
made his people Israel utterly to
abhor him; therefore he shall be my servant for ever.
So Achish trusted David, thinking, “Since he has
made himself an utter
stench to his people Israel, he will be my servant
forever.”
And they found an Egyptian in the field, and brought him to David, and gave him bread, and he did eat; and they made him drink water;
Now his men found an Egyptian in the field and brought him to David. They gave the man water to drink and food to eat—
We
made an invasion upon the south of the Cherethites, and upon the coast which belongeth to Judah, and upon the south of
Caleb; and we burned
Ziklag with fire.
We
raided the Negev of the Cherethites, the territory of Judah, and the Negev of
Caleb, and we burned down
Ziklag.”
And David came to the two hundred men, which were so
faint that they could not follow David, whom they had
made also to
abide at the
brook Besor: and they went forth to meet David, and to meet the people that were with him: and when David came near to the people, he
saluted them.
When David came to the two hundred men who had been too exhausted to follow him from the
Brook of Besor, they came out to meet him and the troops with him. As David approached the men, he
greeted them,
And it was so from that day forward, that he
made it a statute and an
ordinance for Israel unto this day.
And so it has been from that day forward. David established this statute as an
ordinance for Israel to this very day.
And
made him king over
Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over
Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.
and
made him king over
Gilead, Asher,
Jezreel, Ephraim, and Benjamin—over all Israel.
And it came to pass, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that
Abner made himself strong for the house of Saul.
During the war between the house of Saul and the house of David,
Abner had continued to
strengthen his position in the house of Saul.
So
Abner came to David to
Hebron, and twenty men with him. And David
made Abner and the men that were with him a feast.
When
Abner and twenty of his men came to David at
Hebron, David held a feast for them.
And
Jonathan, Saul’s son, had a son that was
lame of his feet. He was five years old when the
tidings came of Saul and
Jonathan out of
Jezreel, and his
nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she
made haste to
flee, that he fell, and became
lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.
And
Jonathan son of Saul had a son who was
lame in his feet. He was five years old when the report about Saul and
Jonathan came from
Jezreel. His
nurse picked him up and fled, but as she was
hurrying to escape, he fell and became
lame. His name was Mephibosheth.
So all the elders of Israel came to the king to
Hebron; and king David
made a league with them in
Hebron before the LORD: and they
anointed David king over Israel.
So all the elders of Israel came to the king at
Hebron, where King David
made with them a covenant before the LORD. And they
anointed him king over Israel.
And David and all the house of Israel played before the LORD on all manner of instruments
made of
fir wood, even on harps, and on
psalteries, and on
timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals.
David and all the house of Israel were
celebrating before the LORD with all kinds of wood instruments, harps, stringed instruments, tambourines, sistrums, and cymbals.
And David was displeased, because the LORD had
made a breach upon Uzzah: and he called the name of the place
Perez-uzzah to this day.
Then David became
angry because the LORD had
burst forth against Uzzah; so he named that place
Perez-uzzah, as it is called to this day.
And as soon as David had made an end of offering burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of hosts.
When David had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of Hosts.
And I was with thee
whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have
made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth.
I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make for you a name like the greatest in the land.
And he
smote Moab, and measured them with a line, casting them down to the ground; even with two lines measured he to put to death, and with one full line to keep alive. And so the Moabites became David’s servants, and brought gifts.
David also defeated the Moabites,
made them lie down on the ground, and measured them off with a cord. He measured off with two lengths those to be put to death, and with one length those to be
spared. So the Moabites became subject to David and brought him tribute.
Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the LORD preserved David
whithersoever he went.
Then he placed garrisons in
Aram of Damascus, and the Arameans became subject to David and brought him tribute. So the LORD
made David victorious wherever he went.
And David
gat him a name when he returned from
smiting of the Syrians in the valley of salt, being eighteen thousand men.
And David made a name for himself when he returned from striking down eighteen thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.
And he put garrisons in
Edom; throughout all
Edom put he garrisons, and all they of
Edom became David’s servants. And the LORD preserved David
whithersoever he went.
He placed garrisons throughout
Edom, and all the Edomites were subject to David. So the LORD
made David victorious wherever he went.
And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were
smitten before Israel, they
made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of
Ammon any more.
When all the kings who were subject to Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they
made peace with Israel and became subject to them. So the Arameans were afraid to help the
Ammonites anymore.
And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he
made him
drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.
Then David invited Uriah to eat and drink with him, and he got Uriah
drunk. And in the evening Uriah went out to lie down on his
cot with his master’s servants, but he did not go home.
And charged the
messenger, saying, When thou hast
made an end of telling the matters of the war unto the king,
and
instructed the
messenger, “When you have finished giving the king all the details of the battle,
And he brought forth the people that were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and
made them pass through the
brickkiln: and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of
Ammon. So David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem.
David brought out the people who were there and put them to work with saws, iron picks, and axes, and he
made them work at the brick kilns. He did the same to all the
Ammonite cities. Then David and all his troops returned to Jerusalem.
So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick: and when the king was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, I pray thee, let Tamar my sister come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat at her hand.
So Amnon lay down and
feigned illness. When the king came to see him, Amnon said, “Please let my sister Tamar come and make a couple of cakes in my sight, so that I may eat from her hand.”
So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house; and he was laid down. And she took flour, and
kneaded it, and
made cakes in his sight, and did
bake the cakes.
So Tamar went to the house of her brother Amnon, who was lying down. She took some
dough,
kneaded it,
made cakes in his sight, and
baked them.
And Amnon said unto Tamar, Bring the meat into the chamber, that I may eat of thine hand. And Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother.
Then Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food into the
bedroom, so that I may eat it from your hand.” Tamar took the cakes she had
made and went to her brother Amnon’s
bedroom.
And it came to pass, as soon as he had
made an end of speaking, that, behold, the king’s sons came, and lifted up their voice and
wept: and the king also and all his servants
wept very
sore.
And as he finished speaking, the sons of the king came in,
wailing loudly. Then the king and all his servants also
wept very bitterly.
Now therefore that I am come to speak of this thing unto my lord the king, it is because the people have
made me afraid: and thy
handmaid said, I will now speak unto the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his
handmaid.
Now therefore, I have come to present this matter to my lord the king because the people have
made me afraid. Your servant thought, ‘I will speak to the king. Perhaps he will grant the request of his
maidservant.
Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were
made judge in the land, that every man which hath any suit or cause might come unto me, and I would do him justice!
And he would add, “If only someone would
appoint me judge in the land, then
everyone with a
grievance or dispute could come to me, and I would give him justice.”
And it came to pass after forty years, that
Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my
vow, which I have
vowed unto the LORD, in
Hebron.
After four years had passed,
Absalom said to the king, “Please let me go to
Hebron to
fulfill a
vow I have
made to the LORD.
For thy servant
vowed a
vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the LORD shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve the LORD.
For your servant
made a
vow while dwelling in Geshur of
Aram, saying: ‘If indeed the LORD brings me back to Jerusalem, I will worship the LORD in
Hebron.’”
In that thou lovest thine enemies, and hatest thy friends. For thou hast declared this day, that thou regardest neither princes nor servants: for this day I perceive, that if
Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it had pleased thee well.
You love those who
hate you and
hate those who love you! For you have
made it clear
today that the commanders and soldiers mean nothing to you. I know
today that if
Absalom were alive and all of us were dead, it would have pleased you!
When the waves of death compassed me, the floods of ungodly men made me afraid;
And he
made darkness pavilions round about him, dark waters, and thick clouds of the
skies.
He
made darkness a
canopy around Him, a gathering of water and thick clouds.
Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy gentleness hath made me great.
You have given me Your shield of salvation, and Your gentleness exalts me.
Thou hast also given me the necks of mine enemies, that I might destroy them that
hate me.
You have
made my enemies retreat before me; I put an end to those who
hated me.
Although my house be not so with God; yet he hath
made with me an
everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure: for this is all my salvation, and all my desire, although he make it not to grow.
Is not my house right with God? For He has established with me an
everlasting covenant, ordered and secured in every part. Will He not bring about my full salvation and my every desire?
And Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard it as they had
made an end of eating. And when
Joab heard the sound of the
trumpet, he said, Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an
uproar?
Now Adonijah and all his guests were finishing their feast when they heard the sound of the ram’s horn. “Why is the city in such a loud
uproar?” asked
Joab.
And
Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah,
Verily our lord king David hath
made Solomon king.
“Not at all,”
Jonathan replied. “Our lord King David has
made Solomon king.
Then king Solomon
sware by the LORD, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah have not spoken this word against his own life.
Then King Solomon
swore by the LORD: “May God
punish me, and ever so severely, if Adonijah has not
made this request at the expense of his life.
Now therefore, as the LORD liveth, which hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who hath made me an house, as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day.
And now, as surely as the LORD lives—the One who established me, who set me on the throne of my father David, and who founded for me a dynasty as He promised—surely Adonijah shall be put to death
today!”
And Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh’s daughter, and brought her into the city of David, until he had made an end of building his own house, and the house of the LORD, and the wall of Jerusalem round about.
Later, Solomon formed an alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt by marrying his daughter. Solomon brought her to the City of David until he had finished building his palace and the house of the LORD, as well as the wall around Jerusalem.
And now, O LORD my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.
And now, O LORD my God, You have made Your servant king in my father David’s place. But I am only a little child, not knowing how to go out or come in.
And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.
Now it pleased the Lord that Solomon had made this request.
And Solomon
awoke; and, behold, it was a dream. And he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and offered up burnt offerings, and offered peace offerings, and
made a feast to all his servants.
Then Solomon
awoke, and indeed it had been a dream. So he returned to Jerusalem, stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. Then he held a feast for all his servants.
And Solomon had twelve officers over all Israel, which provided
victuals for the king and his household: each man his month in a year
made provision.
Solomon had twelve governors over all Israel to provide food for the king and his household. Each one would arrange provisions for one month of the year,
And the LORD gave Solomon wisdom, as he promised him: and there was peace between
Hiram and Solomon; and they two
made a league together.
And the LORD gave Solomon wisdom, as He had promised him. There was peace between
Hiram and Solomon, and the two of them
made a treaty.
And for the house he made windows of narrow lights.
He also had narrow windows framed high in the temple.
And against the wall of the house he built chambers round about, against the walls of the house round about, both of the temple and of the
oracle: and he
made chambers round about:
Against the walls of the temple and the inner sanctuary, Solomon built a chambered structure around the temple, in which he constructed the side rooms.
The
nethermost chamber was five cubits broad, and the middle was six cubits broad, and the third was seven cubits broad: for without in the wall of the house he
made narrowed rests round about, that the beams should not be fastened in the walls of the house.
The bottom floor was five cubits wide, the middle floor six cubits, and the third floor seven cubits. He also placed
offset ledges around the outside of the temple, so that nothing would be inserted into its walls.
And the house, when it was in building, was built of stone
made ready before it was brought thither: so that there was neither hammer nor
axe nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was in building.
The temple was constructed using finished stones cut at the
quarry, so that no hammer or
chisel or any other iron tool was heard in the temple while it was being built.
Concerning this house which thou art in building, if thou
wilt walk in my statutes, and
execute my judgments, and keep all my commandments to walk in them; then will I perform my word with thee, which I spake unto David thy father:
“As for this temple you are building, if you walk in My statutes, carry out My ordinances, and keep all My commandments by walking in them, I will
fulfill through you the promise I
made to your father David.
So Solomon overlaid the house within with pure gold: and he
made a partition by the chains of gold before the
oracle; and he overlaid it with gold.
So Solomon overlaid the inside of the temple with pure gold, and he extended gold chains across the front of the inner sanctuary, which was overlaid with gold.
And within the
oracle he
made two cherubims of olive tree, each ten cubits high.
In the inner sanctuary he
made two
cherubim, each ten cubits high, out of olive wood.
And for the entering of the
oracle he
made doors of olive tree: the
lintel and side posts were a fifth part of the wall.
For the entrance to the inner sanctuary, Solomon constructed doors of olive wood with five-sided doorposts.
The two doors also were of olive tree; and he carved upon them carvings of cherubims and palm trees and open flowers, and overlaid them with gold, and spread gold upon the cherubims, and upon the palm trees.
The double doors were
made of olive wood, and he carved into them
cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers and overlaid the
cherubim and palm trees with hammered gold.
So also made he for the door of the temple posts of olive tree, a fourth part of the wall.
In the same way he made four-sided doorposts of olive wood for the sanctuary entrance.
And the two doors were of
fir tree: the two leaves of the one door were folding, and the two leaves of the other door were folding.
The two doors were
made of
cypress wood, and each had two folding panels.
And he
made a
porch of pillars; the length thereof was fifty cubits, and the breadth thereof thirty cubits: and the
porch was before them: and the other pillars and the thick beam were before them.
Solomon
made his
colonnade fifty cubits long and thirty cubits wide, with a
portico in front of it and a
canopy with pillars in front of the
portico.
Then he
made a
porch for the throne where he might judge, even the
porch of judgment: and it was covered with
cedar from one side of the floor to the other.
In addition, he built a hall for the throne, the Hall of Justice, where he was to judge. It was
paneled with
cedar from floor to
ceiling.
And his house where he dwelt had another court within the
porch, which was of the like work. Solomon
made also an house for Pharaoh’s daughter, whom he had taken to wife, like unto this
porch.
And the palace where Solomon would live, set further back, was of similar construction. He also made a palace like this hall for Pharaoh’s daughter, whom he had married.
And he
made two chapiters of
molten brass, to set upon the tops of the pillars: the height of the one
chapiter was five cubits, and the height of the other
chapiter was five cubits:
He also made two capitals of cast bronze to set on top of the pillars, each capital five cubits high.
And nets of checker work, and
wreaths of chain work, for the chapiters which were upon the top of the pillars; seven for the one
chapiter, and seven for the other
chapiter.
For the capitals on top of the pillars he
made a network of
lattice, with
wreaths of
chainwork, seven for each capital.
And he
made the pillars, and two rows round about upon the one network, to cover the chapiters that were upon the top, with pomegranates: and so did he for the other
chapiter.
Likewise, he
made the pillars with two rows of pomegranates around each
grating to cover each capital
atop the pillars.
And he
made a
molten sea, ten cubits from the one
brim to the other: it was round all about, and his height was five cubits: and a line of thirty cubits did compass it round about.
He also
made the Sea of cast metal. It was circular in shape, measuring ten cubits from
rim to
rim, five cubits in height, and thirty cubits in circumference.
And he made ten bases of brass; four cubits was the length of one base, and four cubits the breadth thereof, and three cubits the height of it.
In addition, he made ten movable stands of bronze, each four cubits long, four cubits wide, and three cubits high.
