mishpat, which is Kadesh, and
smote all the country of the

mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and they conquered the whole territory of the
Amalekites, as well as the
Amorites who lived in Hazazon-tamar.
And he said unto
Abram, Know of a
surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall

enslaved and
mistreated four hundred years.
And he went in unto
Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her
mistress was
despised in her eyes.

Hagar, servant of Sarai,” he said, “where have you come from, and where are you going?” “I am running away from my
mistress Sarai,” she replied.
And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy
mistress, and submit
thyself under her hands.

mistress and submit to her authority.”
And
Mishma, and Dumah, and
Massa,

If thou shalt
afflict my daughters, or if thou shalt take other wives beside my daughters, no man is with us; see, God is witness
betwixt me and thee.
If you mistreat my daughters or take other wives, although no one is with us, remember that God is a witness between you and me.”
But Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said, Lest
peradventure mischief befall him.

harm might
befall him.”
And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if
mischief befall him by the way in the which ye go, then shall ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
But Jacob replied, “My son will not go down there with you, for his brother is dead, and he alone is left. If any
harm comes to him on your journey, you will bring my gray hair down to
Sheol in sorrow.”
And take double money in your hand; and the money that was brought again in the mouth of your sacks, carry it again in your hand;
peradventure it was an oversight:
Take double the silver with you so that you may return the silver that was put back into the mouths of your sacks. Perhaps it was a mistake.
And if ye take this also from me, and
mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
Now if you also take this one from me and
harm comes to him, you will bring my gray hair down to
Sheol in sorrow.’
For how shall I go up to my father, and the
lad be not with me? lest
peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father.

misery that would
overwhelm him.”

strive, and
hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no
mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.
If men who are fighting strike a
pregnant woman and her child is born
prematurely, but there is no further injury, he shall surely be fined as the woman’s husband demands and as the court allows.

But if a serious injury results, then you must require a life for a life—
Ye shall not
afflict any widow, or fatherless child.
You must not
mistreat any widow or
orphan.
If thou
afflict them in any wise, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry;
If you do mistreat them, and they cry out to Me in distress, I will surely hear their cry.
There shall nothing cast their young, nor be barren, in thy land: the number of thy days I will fulfil.
No woman in your land will
miscarry or be barren; I will
fulfill the number of your days.
Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For
mischief did he bring them out, to
slay them in the mountains, and to
consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and
repent of this evil against thy people.
Why should the Egyptians declare, ‘He brought them out with evil intent, to kill them in the mountains and
wipe them from the face of the earth’? Turn from Your fierce anger and relent from doing
harm to Your people.

Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan, sons of Aaron’s uncle Uzziel, and said to them, “Come here; carry the bodies of your cousins outside the camp, away from the front of the sanctuary.”
And Moses was very
wroth, and said unto the LORD, Respect not thou their offering: I have not taken one
ass from them, neither have I
hurt one of them.
Then Moses became very
angry and said to the LORD, “Do not regard their offering. I have not taken one
donkey from them or
mistreated a single one of them.”
How our fathers went down into Egypt, and we have dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians
vexed us, and our fathers:
how our fathers went down to Egypt, where we lived many years. The Egyptians mistreated us and our fathers,
And they said unto Moses, Thy servants have taken the sum of the men of war which are under our charge, and there lacketh not one man of us.
and said, “Your servants have counted the soldiers under our command, and not one of us is missing.
But the Egyptians
mistreated us and
afflicted us, putting us to hard labor.
I will
heap mischiefs upon them; I will
spend mine arrows upon them.
I will
heap disasters upon them; I will
spend My arrows against them.
Were it not that I feared the wrath of the enemy, lest their
adversaries should
behave themselves strangely, and lest they should say, Our hand is high, and the LORD hath not done all this.
if I had not
dreaded the
taunt of the enemy, lest their
adversaries misunderstand and say: ‘Our own hand has prevailed; it was not the LORD who did all this.’”
And the men answered her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business. And it shall be, when the LORD hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.
“Our lives for your lives!” the men agreed. “If you do not report our mission, we will show you kindness and faithfulness when the LORD gives us the land.”
And if thou utter this our business, then we will be
quit of thine oath which thou hast made us to
swear.
And if you report our
mission, we will be released from the oath you made us
swear.”
And the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, who
smote them, and
chased them unto great Zidon, and unto
Misrephoth-
maim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they
smote them, until they left them none remaining.
and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, who struck them down and pursued them all the way to Greater
Sidon and
Misrephoth-
maim, and eastward as far as the Valley of Mizpeh. They struck them down, leaving no survivors.
All the inhabitants of the hill country from
Lebanon unto
Misrephoth-
maim, and all the Sidonians, them will I drive out from before the children of Israel: only divide thou it by lot unto the Israelites for an inheritance, as I have commanded thee.
All the inhabitants of the hill country from
Lebanon to
Misrephoth-
maim—all the Sidonians—I Myself will drive out before the Israelites. Be sure to divide it by lot as an inheritance to Israel, as I have commanded you.
And Alammelech, and Amad, and
Misheal; and reacheth to
Carmel westward, and to Shihor-libnath;
Allammelech, Amad, and
Mishal. On the west the border touched
Carmel and Shihor-libnath,
And out of the tribe of Asher, Mishal with her suburbs, Abdon with her suburbs,
From the tribe of Asher they were given Mishal, Abdon,
And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the LORD: and his soul was
grieved for the
misery of Israel.
So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the LORD, and He could no longer bear the misery of Israel.
And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said,
Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.
As soon as
Jephthah saw her, he
tore his clothes and said, “No! Not my daughter! You have brought me to my knees! You have brought great
misery upon me, for I have given my word to the LORD and cannot take it back.”
And
Manoah said, Now let thy words come to pass. How shall we order the child, and how shall we do unto him?
Then
Manoah asked, “When your words come to pass, what will be the boy’s rule of life and
mission?”
Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded; every one could
sling stones at an hair breadth, and not
miss.
Among all these soldiers there were 700 select left-handers, each of whom could
sling a stone at a hair without
missing.
And said, O LORD God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to day one tribe lacking in Israel?
“Why, O LORD God of Israel,” they
cried out, “has this happened in Israel?
Today in Israel one tribe is
missing!”
And the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the
Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.
and sent you on a
mission, saying, ‘Go and
devote to destruction the sinful
Amalekites. Fight against them until you have
wiped them out.’
And Saul said unto Samuel,
Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought
Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the
Amalekites.

mission that the LORD gave me. I brought back
Agag king of Amalek and devoted the
Amalekites to destruction.
If thy father at all
miss me, then say, David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to
Bethlehem his city: for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.
If your father
misses me at all, tell him, ‘David
urgently requested my permission to
hurry to
Bethlehem, his hometown, because there is an annual sacrifice for his whole clan.’
Then
Jonathan said to David, To
morrow is the new moon: and thou shalt be
missed, because thy seat will be empty.
Then
Jonathan said to David, “
Tomorrow is the New Moon, and you will be
missed if your seat is empty.
And David said unto
Ahimelech the priest, The king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me, Let no man know any thing of the business
whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed my servants to such and such a place.
“The king has given me a mission,” David replied. “He told me no one is to know about the mission or charge. And I have directed my young men to meet me at a certain place.
And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common,
yea, though it were
sanctified this day in the vessel.
David answered, “Women have indeed been kept from us, as is usual when I set out. And the
equipment of the young men is holy, as it is even on common
missions, and all the more at this time.”
And David knew that Saul secretly practised
mischief against him; and he said to
Abiathar the priest, Bring
hither the
ephod.
When David learned that Saul was
plotting evil against him, he said to
Abiathar the priest, “Bring the
ephod.”
And now I have heard that thou hast shearers: now thy
shepherds which were with us, we
hurt them not, neither was there ought
missing unto them, all the while they were in
Carmel.
Now I hear that it is time for shearing. When your
shepherds were with us, we did not
harass them, and nothing of theirs was
missing the whole time they were in
Carmel.
But the men were very good unto us, and we were not
hurt, neither
missed we any thing, as long as we were
conversant with them, when we were in the fields:
Yet these men were very good to us. When we were in the field, we were not
harassed, and nothing of ours went
missing the whole time we lived among them.
Now David had said, Surely in vain have I kept all that this fellow hath in the wilderness, so that nothing was
missed of all that
pertained unto him: and he hath requited me evil for good.
Now David had just finished saying, “In vain I have protected all that belonged to this man in the wilderness. Nothing that belongs to him has gone missing, yet he has paid me back evil for good.
And there was nothing lacking to them, neither small nor great, neither sons nor daughters, neither
spoil, nor any thing that they had taken to them: David recovered all.
Nothing was
missing, young or old, son or daughter, or any of the
plunder the
Amalekites had taken. David brought everything back.
And
Joab returned from following
Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David’s servants
nineteen men and
Asahel.
When
Joab returned from pursuing
Abner, he gathered all the troops. In addition to
Asahel,
nineteen of David’s servants were
missing,
The LORD hath returned upon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose
stead thou hast reigned; and the LORD hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of
Absalom thy son: and, behold, thou art taken in thy
mischief, because thou art a
bloody man.
The LORD has paid you back for all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose place you have reigned, and the LORD has delivered the kingdom into the hand of your son
Absalom. See, you have come to ruin because you are a man of
bloodshed!”
And he was an
adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon, beside the
mischief that
Hadad did: and he
abhorred Israel, and reigned over Syria.
Rezon was Israel’s enemy throughout the days of Solomon, adding to the trouble caused by
Hadad. So Rezon ruled over
Aram with hostility toward Israel.
And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the
mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so
sore, that there was no breath left in him.
Later, the son of the woman who owned the house became ill, and his sickness grew worse and worse, until no breath remained in him.
Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, Mark, I pray you, and see how this man seeketh mischief: for he sent unto me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I denied him not.
Then the king of Israel summoned all the elders of the land and said, “Please take note and see that this man is looking for trouble, for when he demanded my wives, my children, my silver, and my gold, I did not deny him.”
And as the king passed by, he
cried unto the king: and he said, Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle; and, behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man unto me, and said, Keep this man: if by any means he be
missing, then shall thy life be for his life, or else thou shalt pay a talent of silver.
As the king passed by, he
cried out to the king: “Your servant had marched out into the middle of the battle, when suddenly a man came over with a
captive and told me, ‘Guard this man! If he goes
missing for any reason, your life will be exchanged for his life, or you will
weigh out a talent of silver.’
And she said unto her
mistress, Would God my lord were with the prophet that is in Samaria! for he would recover him of his
leprosy.
She said to her
mistress, “If only my master would go to the prophet who is in Samaria, he would cure him of his
leprosy.”
Then they said one to another, We do not well: this day is a day of good
tidings, and we hold our peace: if we
tarry till the morning light, some
mischief will come upon us: now therefore come, that we may go and tell the king’s household.
Finally, they said to one another, “We are not doing what is right.
Today is a day of good news. If we are silent and wait until morning light, our sin will overtake us. Now, therefore, let us go and tell the king’s household.”
Now therefore call unto me all the prophets of
Baal, all his servants, and all his priests; let none be wanting: for I have a great sacrifice to do to
Baal;
whosoever shall be wanting, he shall not live. But
Jehu did it in
subtilty, to the intent that he might destroy the worshippers of
Baal.
Now, therefore,
summon to me all the prophets of
Baal, all his servants, and all his priests. See that no one is
missing, for I have a great sacrifice for
Baal.
Whoever is
missing will not live.” But
Jehu was acting
deceptively in order to destroy the servants of
Baal.
Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oil olive and of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and
hearken not unto
Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, The LORD will deliver us.
until I come and take you away to a land like your own—a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and honey—so that you may live and not die. But do not
listen to
Hezekiah, for he
misleads you when he says, ‘The LORD will deliver us.’
And the families of Kirjath-jearim; the Ithrites, and the Puhites, and the Shumathites, and the Mishraites; of them came the Zareathites, and the Eshtaulites.
Haroeh, half the Manahathites, and the clans of Kiriath-jearim—the Ithrites, Puthites, Shumathites, and Mishraites. From these descended the Zorathites and Eshtaolites.
Shallum his son, Mibsam his son, Mishma his son.
The sons of Shaul: Shallum, Mibsam, and Mishma.
And the sons of Mishma; Hamuel his son, Zacchur his son, Shimei his son.
The sons of Mishma: Hammuel, Zaccur, and Shimei.
The sons of Elpaal; Eber, and Misham, and Shamed, who built Ono, and Lod, with the towns thereof:
The sons of Elpaal:
Beriah also, and Shema, who were heads of the fathers of the inhabitants of
Aijalon, who drove away the inhabitants of
Gath:
Eber,
Misham, Shemed (who built Ono and Lod with its villages), and Beriah and Shema (who were the heads of families of the inhabitants of
Aijalon and who drove out the inhabitants of
Gath).
Mishmannah the fourth, Jeremiah the fifth,
Mishmannah the fourth, Jeremiah the fifth,
Is not
Hezekiah misleading you to give you over to death by famine and
thirst when he says, ‘The LORD our God will deliver us from the hand of the king of Assyria?’
Now therefore let not
Hezekiah deceive you, nor
persuade you on this manner, neither yet believe him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of mine hand?
So now, do not let
Hezekiah deceive you, and do not let him
mislead you like this. Do not believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people from my hand or from the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God deliver you from my hand!”
But they
mocked the messengers of God, and
despised his words, and
misused his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy.
But they
mocked the messengers of God,
despising His words and
scoffing at His prophets, until the wrath of the LORD against His people was
stirred up beyond remedy.

That
Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in some one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me
mischief.
Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message: “Come, let us meet together in one of the villages on the plain of Ono.” But they were
planning to
harm me.
Who came with
Zerubbabel, Jeshua,
Nehemiah,
Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani,
Mordecai, Bilshan,
Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, Baanah. The number, I say, of the men of the people of Israel was this;
accompanied by
Zerubbabel, Jeshua,
Nehemiah,
Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani,
Mordecai, Bilshan,
Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah. This is the count of the men of Israel:
And
Ezra the
scribe stood upon a
pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and
Mishael, and Malchiah, and Hashum, and Hashbadana,
Zechariah, and Meshullam.
Ezra the
scribe stood on a high wooden platform built for this occasion. At his right side stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, and at his left were Pedaiah,
Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum,
Hash-baddanah,
Zechariah, and Meshullam.
And
Esther spake yet again before the king, and fell down at his feet, and
besought him with tears to put away the
mischief of
Haman the Agagite, and his
device that he had devised against the Jews.
And once again,
Esther addressed the king. She fell at his feet
weeping and
begged him to
revoke the evil scheme of
Haman the Agagite, which he had devised against the Jews.
Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul;
Why is light given to the
miserable, and life to the bitter of soul,
So am I made to possess months of vanity, and
wearisome nights are appointed to me.
Because thou shalt
forget thy
misery, and remember it as waters that pass away:
For you will
forget your
misery, recalling it only as waters gone by.
He that is ready to slip with his feet is as a lamp
despised in the thought of him that is at ease.
The one at ease scorns
misfortune as the fate of those whose feet are
slipping.
They conceive
mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their
belly prepareth
deceit.
I have heard many such things:
miserable comforters are ye all.
“I have heard many things like these;
miserable comforters are you all.
These ten times have ye reproached me: ye are not
ashamed that ye make
yourselves strange to me.
Ten times now you have reproached me; you
shamelessly mistreat me.
In the
fulness of his
sufficiency he shall be in straits: every hand of the wicked shall come upon him.
In the midst of his
plenty, he will be distressed; the full force of
misery will come upon him.
Their bull gendereth, and faileth not; their cow calveth, and casteth not her
calf.
Their bulls breed without fail; their cows bear
calves and do not
miscarry.
For he maketh small the drops of water: they pour down rain according to the vapour thereof:
For He draws up drops of water which distill the rain from the
mist,
Behold, he travaileth with iniquity, and hath conceived
mischief, and brought forth
falsehood.
Behold, the wicked man travails with evil; he conceives trouble and births
falsehood.
His
mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down upon his own
pate.
His trouble recoils on himself, and his violence falls on his own head.
His mouth is full of
cursing and
deceit and
fraud: under his tongue is
mischief and vanity.
Thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it with thy hand: the poor committeth himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless.
But You have regarded trouble and grief; You see to repay it by Your hand. The
victim entrusts himself to You; You are the helper of the fatherless.
For they intended evil against thee: they imagined a
mischievous device, which they are not able to perform.
Though they intend You
harm, the schemes they
devise will not prevail.
In whose hands is mischief, and their right hand is full of bribes.
in whose hands are wicked schemes, whose right hands are full of bribes.
Draw me not away with the wicked, and with the workers of iniquity, which speak peace to their neighbours, but mischief is in their hearts.
Do not
drag me away with the wicked, and with the workers of iniquity, who speak peace to their neighbors while
malice is in their hearts.
He deviseth mischief upon his bed; he setteth himself in a way that is not good; he abhorreth not evil.
Even on his bed he plots wickedness; he sets himself on a path that is not good; he fails to
reject evil.
They also that seek after my life lay snares for me: and they that seek my
hurt speak
mischievous things, and imagine deceits all the day long.
Those who seek my life lay snares; those who wish me
harm speak destruction,
plotting deceit all day long.
Why boastest thou
thyself in
mischief, O mighty man? the goodness of God endureth continually.
Why do you
boast of evil, O mighty man? The loving devotion of God endures all day long.
Thy tongue deviseth
mischiefs; like a sharp rasor, working
deceitfully.
Your tongue devises destruction like a sharpened
razor, O worker of
deceit.
Day and night they go about it upon the walls thereof: mischief also and sorrow are in the midst of it.
Day and night they
encircle the walls, while
malice and trouble lie within.
How long will ye imagine
mischief against a man? ye shall be slain all of you: as a bowing wall shall ye be, and as a
tottering fence.
Thou, which hast shewed me great and
sore troubles, shalt
quicken me again, and shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth.
Though You have shown me many troubles and misfortunes, You will revive me once again. Even from the depths of the earth You will bring me back up.
