As a guilt
offering to the LORD, the Philistines had sent back one gold
tumor for each city:
Ashdod,
Gaza, Ashkelon,
Gath, and
Ekron.
And Samuel took a
sucking lamb, and
offered it for a burnt
offering wholly unto the LORD: and Samuel
cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD heard him.
Then Samuel took a
suckling lamb and
offered it as a whole burnt
offering to the LORD. He
cried out to the LORD on behalf of Israel, and the LORD answered him.
And as Samuel was
offering up the burnt
offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the LORD
thundered with a great
thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and
discomfited them; and they were
smitten before Israel.
As the Philistines drew near to fight against Israel, Samuel was sacrificing the burnt
offering. But that day the LORD
thundered loudly against the Philistines and threw them into such confusion that they fled before Israel.
And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.
He will take a tenth of your grain and
grape harvest and give it to his
officials and servants.
And the
asses of
Kish Saul’s father were lost. And
Kish said to Saul his son, Take now one of the servants with thee, and arise, go seek the
asses.
And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the
seer: go up before me unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me to day, and to
morrow I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thine heart.
“I am the
seer,” Samuel replied. “Go up before me to the high place, for you shall eat with me
today. And when I send you
off in the morning, I will tell you all that is in your heart.
And thou shalt go down before me to
Gilgal; and, behold, I will come down unto thee, to
offer burnt
offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace
offerings: seven days shalt thou
tarry, till I come to thee, and
shew thee what thou shalt do.
And you shall go before me to
Gilgal, and surely I will come to you to
offer burnt
offerings and to sacrifice peace
offerings. Wait seven days until I come to you and show you what you are to do.”
And the elders of
Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.
“Hold
off for seven days,” replied the elders of
Jabesh, “and let us send messengers throughout Israel. If there is no one to save us, we will surrender to you.”
And all the people went to
Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in
Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace
offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel
rejoiced greatly.
So all the people went to
Gilgal and confirmed Saul as king in the presence of the LORD. There they sacrificed peace
offerings before the LORD, and Saul and all the Israelites
rejoiced greatly.
And Saul said, Bring
hither a burnt
offering to me, and peace
offerings. And he
offered the burnt
offering.
So he said, “Bring me the burnt offering and the peace offerings.” And he offered up the burnt offering.
And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of
offering the burnt
offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might
salute him.
Just as he finished
offering the burnt
offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to
greet him.
Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to
Gilgal, and I have not made
supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and
offered a burnt
offering.
I thought, ‘Now the Philistines will descend upon me at
Gilgal, and I have not sought the favor of the LORD.’ So I felt compelled to
offer the burnt
offering.”
And
Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet, and his armourbearer after him: and they fell before
Jonathan; and his armourbearer
slew after him.
So
Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet, with his
armor-bearer behind him. And the Philistines fell before
Jonathan, and his
armor-bearer followed and finished them
off.
And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt
offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to
hearken than the fat of rams.
But Samuel declared: “Does the LORD delight in burnt
offerings and sacrifices as much as in obedience to His voice? Behold, obedience is better than sacrifice, and
attentiveness is better than the fat of rams.
And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.
The people told him about the offer, saying, “That is what will be done for the man who kills him.”
And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.
Then he turned from him toward another and asked about the offer, and those people answered him just as the first ones had answered.
And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:
David replied, “Your servant has been tending his father’s sheep, and whenever a lion or a bear came and carried off a lamb from the flock,
And David
girded his sword upon his armour, and he
assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them
off him.
David
strapped his sword over the
tunic and tried to walk, but he was not accustomed to them. “I cannot walk in these,” David said to Saul. “I am not accustomed to them.” So David took them
off.
This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will
smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand. This day I will strike you down, cut
off your head, and give the
carcasses of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the creatures of the earth. Then the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.
Therefore David ran, and stood upon the
Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the
sheath thereof, and
slew him, and cut
off his head
therewith. And when the Philistines saw their
champion was dead, they fled.
David ran and stood over him. He
grabbed the
Philistine’s sword and pulled it from its
sheath and killed him; and he cut
off his head with the sword. When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran.
And David went out
whithersoever Saul sent him, and
behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.
So David marched out and
prospered in everything Saul sent him to do, and Saul set him over the men of war. And this was pleasing in the sight of all the people, and of Saul’s
officers as well.
Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David
behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.
Every time the
Philistine commanders came out for battle, David was more successful than all of Saul’s
officers, so that his name was highly esteemed.
And he stript
off his clothes also, and
prophesied before Samuel in like manner, and lay down naked all that day and all that night. Wherefore they say, Is Saul also among the prophets?
Then Saul
stripped off his robes and also
prophesied before Samuel. And he
collapsed and lay naked all that day and night. That is why it is said, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”
But also thou shalt not cut off thy kindness from my house for ever: no, not when the LORD hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth.
and do not ever cut off your loving devotion from my household—not even when the LORD cuts off every one of David’s enemies from the face of the earth.”
So David and his men went to Keilah, and fought with the Philistines, and brought away their cattle, and
smote them with a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.
Then David and his men went to Keilah, fought against the Philistines, and carried
off their
livestock, striking them with a mighty blow. So David saved the people of Keilah.
Wherefore Saul returned from pursuing after David, and went against the Philistines: therefore they called that place Sela-hammahlekoth.
So Saul broke off his pursuit of David and went to meet the Philistines. That is why that place is called Sela-hammahlekoth.
And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the LORD said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut
off the
skirt of Saul’s
robe privily.
So David’s men said to him, “This is the day about which the LORD said to you, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, that you may do with him as you wish.’” Then David
crept up secretly and cut
off a corner of Saul’s
robe.
And it came to pass afterward, that David’s heart
smote him, because he had cut
off Saul’s
skirt.
Afterward, David’s conscience was
stricken because he had cut
off the corner of Saul’s
robe.
Moreover, my father, see,
yea, see the
skirt of thy
robe in my hand: for in that I cut
off the
skirt of thy
robe and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor
transgression in mine hand, and I have not
sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it.
See, my father, look at the corner of your
robe in my hand. For I cut it
off, but I did not kill you. See and know that there is no evil or rebellion in my hands. I have not
sinned against you, even though you are hunting me down to take my life.
Swear now therefore unto me by the LORD, that thou
wilt not cut
off my seed after me, and that thou
wilt not destroy my name out of my father’s house.
So now,
swear to me by the LORD that you will not cut
off my descendants or
wipe out my name from my father’s house.”
And when
Abigail saw David, she hasted, and lighted
off the
ass, and fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to the ground,
When
Abigail saw David, she quickly got
off the
donkey, fell facedown, and bowed before him.
I pray thee,
forgive the
trespass of thine
handmaid: for the LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house; because my lord fighteth the battles of the LORD, and evil hath not been found in thee all thy days.
Please
forgive your servant’s
offense, for the LORD will surely make a lasting dynasty for my lord, because he fights the LORD’s battles. May no evil be found in you as long as you live.
That this shall be no grief unto thee, nor
offence of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood causeless, or that my lord hath
avenged himself: but when the LORD shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thine
handmaid.
then my lord will have no
remorse or guilt of conscience over needless
bloodshed and
revenge. And when the LORD has dealt well with my lord, may you remember your
maidservant.”
Then David went over to the other side, and stood on the top of an hill
afar off; a great space being between them:
Then David crossed to the other side and stood
atop the mountain at a distance; there was a wide gulf between them.
Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If the LORD have
stirred thee up against me, let him accept an
offering: but if they be the children of men,
cursed be they before the LORD; for they have driven me out this day from
abiding in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, Go, serve other gods.
Now please, may my lord the king hear the words of his servant: If the LORD has
stirred you up against me, then may He accept an
offering. But if men have done it, may they be
cursed in the presence of the LORD! For
today they have driven me away from sharing in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods.’
And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut
off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a
snare for my life, to cause me to die?
But the woman replied, “Surely you know what Saul has done, how he has killed the mediums and spiritists in the land. Why have you set a
trap to get me killed?”
And had taken the women
captives, that were therein: they
slew not any, either great or small, but carried them away, and went on their way.
They had taken
captive the women and all who were there, both young and old. They had not killed
anyone, but had carried them
off as they went on their way.
And David
smote them from the
twilight even unto the evening of the next day: and there escaped not a man of them, save four hundred young men, which
rode upon camels, and fled.
And David struck them down from
twilight until the evening of the next day. Not a man escaped, except four hundred young men who fled, riding
off on camels.
And they cut
off his head, and
stripped off his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to
publish it in the house of their idols, and among the people.
They cut
off Saul’s head,
stripped off his
armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to
proclaim the news in the temples of their idols and among their people.
Ye mountains of
Gilboa, let there be no
dew, neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of
offerings: for there the shield of the mighty is
vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been
anointed with oil.
O mountains of
Gilboa, may you have no
dew or rain, no fields yielding
offerings of grain. For there the shield of the mighty was
defiled, the shield of Saul, no longer
anointed with oil.
Then there arose and went over by number twelve of Benjamin, which
pertained to
Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.
So they got up and were counted
off—twelve for Benjamin and
Ish-bosheth son of Saul, and twelve for David.
And they brought the head of
Ish-bosheth unto David to
Hebron, and said to the king, Behold the head of
Ish-bosheth the son of Saul thine enemy, which sought thy life; and the LORD hath
avenged my lord the king this day of Saul, and of his seed.
They brought the head of
Ish-bosheth to David at
Hebron and said to the king, “Here is the head of
Ish-bosheth son of Saul, your enemy who sought your life.
Today the LORD has granted
vengeance to my lord the king against Saul and his
offspring.”
And David commanded his young men, and they
slew them, and cut
off their hands and their feet, and
hanged them up over the
pool in
Hebron. But they took the head of
Ish-bosheth, and buried it in the
sepulchre of
Abner in
Hebron.
So David commanded his young men, and they killed Rechab and Baanah. They cut
off their hands and feet and hung their bodies by the
pool in
Hebron, but they took the head of
Ish-bosheth and buried it in
Abner’s tomb in
Hebron.
And they brought in the ark of the LORD, and set it in his place, in the midst of the tabernacle that David had pitched for it: and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.
So they brought the ark of the LORD and set it in its place inside the tent that David had pitched for it. Then David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.
And as soon as David had made an end of offering burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of hosts.
When David had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of Hosts.
And I was with thee
whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut
off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth.
I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make for you a name like the greatest in the land.
For thou, O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, hast revealed to thy servant, saying, I will build thee an house: therefore hath thy servant found in his heart to pray this prayer unto thee.
For You, O LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, have revealed this to Your servant when You said, ‘I will build a house for you.’ Therefore Your servant has found the courage to offer this prayer to You.
And he
smote Moab, and measured them with a line, casting them down to the ground; even with two lines measured he to put to death, and with one full line to keep alive. And so the Moabites became David’s servants, and brought gifts.
David also defeated the Moabites, made them lie down on the ground, and measured them
off with a cord. He measured
off with two lengths those to be put to death, and with one length those to be
spared. So the Moabites became subject to David and brought him tribute.
And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem.
And David took the gold shields that belonged to the officers of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem.
Wherefore Hanun took David’s servants, and
shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut
off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.
So Hanun took David’s servants,
shaved off half of each man’s
beard, cut
off their garments at the hips, and sent them away.
And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.
One evening David got up from his bed and
strolled around on the roof of the palace. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing—a very beautiful woman.
And the shooters shot from off the wall upon thy servants; and some of the king’s servants be dead, and thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
Then the archers shot at your servants from the wall, and some of the king’s servants were killed. And your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead as well.”
And he took their king’s crown from
off his head, the weight
whereof was a talent of gold with the precious stones: and it was set on David’s head. And he brought forth the
spoil of the city in great abundance.
Then he took the crown from the head of their king. It
weighed a talent of gold and was set with precious stones, and it was placed on David’s head. And David took a great amount of
plunder from the city.
And, behold, the whole family is risen against thine
handmaid, and they said, Deliver him that
smote his brother, that we may kill him, for the life of his brother whom he
slew; and we will destroy the heir also: and so they shall
quench my coal which is left, and shall not leave to my husband neither name nor remainder upon the earth.
Now the whole clan has risen up against your
maidservant and said, ‘Hand over the one who struck down his brother, that we may put him to death for the life of the brother whom he killed. Then we will cut
off the heir as well!’ So they would
extinguish my one remaining
ember by not preserving my husband’s name or
posterity on the earth.”
For the king will hear, to deliver his
handmaid out of the hand of the man that would destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God.
For the king will hear and deliver his
maidservant from the hand of the man who would cut
off both me and my son from God’s inheritance.’
And
Absalom sent for
Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counsellor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he
offered sacrifices. And the
conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually with
Absalom.
And the king went forth, and all the people after him, and
tarried in a place that was far
off.
So the king set out with all the people following him. He stopped at the last house,
And lo
Zadok also, and all the Levites were with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God: and they set down the ark of God; and
Abiathar went up, until all the people had done passing out of the city.
Zadok was also there, and all the Levites with him were carrying the ark of the covenant of God. And they set down the ark of God, and
Abiathar offered sacrifices until the people had passed out of the city.
Then said
Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king, Why should this dead dog
curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray thee, and take
off his head.
Then
Abishai son of Zeruiah said to the king, “Why should this dead dog
curse my lord the king? Let me go over and cut
off his head!”
And
Joab blew the
trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel: for
Joab held back the people.
Then
Joab blew the ram’s horn, and the troops broke
off their pursuit of Israel because
Joab had restrained them.
Then said
Joab to Cushi, Go tell the king what thou hast seen. And Cushi bowed himself unto
Joab, and ran.
So
Joab said to a
Cushite, “Go, tell the king what you have seen.” The
Cushite bowed to
Joab and took
off running.
And
Amasa wallowed in blood in the midst of the
highway. And when the man saw that all the people stood still, he removed
Amasa out of the
highway into the field, and cast a cloth upon him, when he saw that every one that came by him stood still.
But
Amasa wallowed in his blood in the middle of the road, and when the man saw that all the troops were
stopping there, he
dragged the body
off the road into a field and threw a garment over it.
Then the woman went unto all the people in her wisdom. And they cut
off the head of
Sheba the son of Bichri, and cast it out to
Joab. And he
blew a
trumpet, and they retired from the city, every man to his tent. And
Joab returned to Jerusalem unto the king.
Then the woman went to all the people with her wise counsel, and they cut
off the head of
Sheba son of Bichri and threw it to
Joab. So he
blew the ram’s horn and his men
dispersed from the city, each to his own home. And
Joab returned to the king in Jerusalem.
Go and say unto David, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.
“Go and tell David that this is what the LORD says: ‘I am offering you three options. Choose one of them, and I will carry it out against you.’”
And Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and
offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, here be oxen for burnt sacrifice, and
threshing instruments and other instruments of the oxen for wood.
Araunah said to David, “My lord the king may take whatever seems good and
offer it up. Here are the oxen for a burnt
offering and the
threshing sledges and ox yokes for the wood.
And the king said unto Araunah,
Nay; but I will surely
buy it of thee at a price: neither will I
offer burnt
offerings unto the LORD my God of that which
doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.
“No,” replied the king, “I
insist on paying a price, for I will not
offer to the LORD my God burnt
offerings that cost me nothing.” So David bought the
threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.
And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD was intreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
And there he built an altar to the LORD and
offered burnt
offerings and peace
offerings. Then the LORD answered the prayers on behalf of the land, and the plague upon Israel was
halted.
Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon shall be counted offenders.
Otherwise, when my lord the king rests with his fathers, I and my son Solomon will be counted as criminals.”
And the king went to
Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place: a thousand burnt
offerings did Solomon
offer upon that altar.
Now the king went to
Gibeon to sacrifice there, for it was the great high place. Solomon
offered a thousand burnt
offerings on the altar there.
And Solomon
awoke; and, behold, it was a dream. And he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and
offered up burnt
offerings, and
offered peace
offerings, and made a feast to all his servants.
Then Solomon
awoke, and indeed it had been a dream. So he returned to Jerusalem, stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and
offered burnt
offerings and peace
offerings. Then he held a feast for all his servants.
And these were the princes which he had;
Azariah the son of
Zadok the priest,
and these were his chief
officials:
Azariah son of
Zadok was the priest;
And
Azariah the son of
Nathan was over the
officers: and Zabud the son of
Nathan was principal
officer, and the king’s friend:
And Solomon had twelve
officers over all Israel, which provided
victuals for the king and his household: each man his month in a year made provision.
Solomon had twelve governors over all Israel to provide food for the king and his household. Each one would arrange provisions for one month of the year,
Geber the son of
Uri was in the country of
Gilead, in the country of Sihon king of the
Amorites, and of
Og king of
Bashan; and he was the only
officer which was in the land.
Geber son of
Uri in the land of
Gilead, including the territories of Sihon king of the
Amorites and of
Og king of
Bashan. There was also one governor in the land of Judah.
And Solomon reigned over all kingdoms from the river unto the land of the Philistines, and unto the border of Egypt: they brought presents, and served Solomon all the days of his life.
And Solomon reigned over all the kingdoms from the Euphrates to the land of the Philistines, as far as the border of Egypt. These kingdoms offered tribute and served Solomon all the days of his life.
And those
officers provided
victual for king Solomon, and for all that came unto king Solomon’s table, every man in his month: they lacked nothing.
Each month the governors in turn provided food for King Solomon and all who came to his table. They saw to it that nothing was lacking.
Barley also and straw for the horses and
dromedaries brought they unto the place where the
officers were, every man according to his charge.
Each one also brought to the required place their quotas of barley and straw for the
chariot horses and other horses.
Beside the chief of Solomon’s officers which were over the work, three thousand and three hundred, which ruled over the people that wrought in the work.
The
nethermost chamber was five cubits broad, and the middle was six cubits broad, and the third was seven cubits broad: for without in the wall of the house he made narrowed rests round about, that the beams should not be fastened in the walls of the house.
The bottom floor was five cubits wide, the middle floor six cubits, and the third floor seven cubits. He also placed
offset ledges around the outside of the temple, so that nothing would be inserted into its walls.
And he built twenty cubits on the sides of the house, both the floor and the walls with boards of
cedar: he even built them for it within, even for the
oracle, even for the most holy place.
He partitioned
off the twenty cubits at the rear of the temple with
cedar boards from floor to
ceiling to form within the temple an inner sanctuary, the Most Holy Place.
Nevertheless thou shalt not build the house; but thy son that shall come forth out of thy loins, he shall build the house unto my name.
Nevertheless, you are not the one to build it; but your son, your own offspring, will build the house for My Name.’
And the king, and all Israel with him, offered sacrifice before the LORD.
Then the king and all Israel with him offered sacrifices before the LORD.
And Solomon offered a sacrifice of peace offerings, which he offered unto the LORD, two and twenty thousand oxen, and an hundred and twenty thousand sheep. So the king and all the children of Israel dedicated the house of the LORD.
And Solomon offered as peace offerings to the LORD 22,000 oxen and 120,000 sheep. So the king and all the Israelites dedicated the house of the LORD.
The same day did the king
hallow the middle of the court that was before the house of the LORD: for there he
offered burnt
offerings, and meat
offerings, and the fat of the peace
offerings: because the
brasen altar that was before the LORD was too little to receive the burnt
offerings, and meat
offerings, and the fat of the peace
offerings.
On that same day the king consecrated the middle of the
courtyard in front of the house of the LORD, and there he
offered the burnt
offerings, the grain
offerings, and the fat of the peace
offerings, since the bronze altar before the LORD was too small to contain all these
offerings.
But if ye shall at all turn from following me, ye or your children, and will not keep my commandments and my statutes which I have set before you, but go and serve other gods, and worship them:
But if indeed you or your sons turn away from following Me and do not keep the commandments and statutes I have set before you, and if you go off to serve and worship other gods,
Then will I cut
off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have
hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a
proverb and a
byword among all people:
then I will cut
off Israel from the land that I have given them, and I will
banish from My presence this temple I have
sanctified for My Name. Then Israel will become an object of
scorn and
ridicule among all peoples.
But of the children of Israel did Solomon make no
bondmen: but they were men of war, and his servants, and his princes, and his captains, and rulers of his
chariots, and his
horsemen.
But Solomon did not
consign any of the Israelites to slavery, because they were his men of war, his servants, his
officers, his captains, and the commanders of his
chariots and cavalry.
These were the chief of the officers that were over Solomon’s work, five hundred and fifty, which bare rule over the people that wrought in the work.
They were also the chief officers over Solomon’s projects: 550 supervisors over the people who did the work.
And three times in a year did Solomon offer burnt offerings and peace offerings upon the altar which he built unto the LORD, and he burnt incense upon the altar that was before the LORD. So he finished the house.
Three times a year Solomon offered burnt offerings and peace offerings on the altar he had built for the LORD, burning incense with them before the LORD. So he completed the temple.
And the meat of his table, and the sitting of his servants, and the attendance of his ministers, and their
apparel, and his cupbearers, and his
ascent by which he went up unto the house of the LORD; there was no more spirit in her.
the food at his table, the seating of his servants, the service and
attire of his attendants and cupbearers, and the burnt
offerings he presented at the house of the LORD, it took her breath away.
(For six months did
Joab remain there with all Israel, until he had cut
off every male in
Edom:)
Joab and all Israel had stayed there six months, until he had killed every male in
Edom.
If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto
Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to
Rehoboam king of Judah.
If these people go up to
offer sacrifices in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, their hearts will return to their lord,
Rehoboam king of Judah; then they will kill me and return to
Rehoboam king of Judah.”
And
Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the
fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he
offered upon the altar. So did he in
Bethel, sacrificing unto the
calves that he had made: and he placed in
Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made.
And
Jeroboam ordained a feast on the
fifteenth day of the eighth month, like the feast that was in Judah, and he
offered sacrifices on the altar; he made this
offering in
Bethel to sacrifice to the
calves he had set up, and he
installed priests in
Bethel for the high places he had set up.
So he
offered upon the altar which he had made in
Bethel the
fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and he
offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.
On the
fifteenth day of the eighth month, a month of his own choosing,
Jeroboam offered sacrifices on the altar he had set up in
Bethel. So he ordained a feast for the Israelites,
offered sacrifices on the altar, and burned incense.
And he
cried against the altar in the word of the LORD, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the LORD; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David,
Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he
offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men’s bones shall be burnt upon thee.
And he
cried out against the altar by the word of the LORD, “O altar, O altar, this is what the LORD says: ‘A son named
Josiah will be born to the house of David, and upon you he will sacrifice the priests of the high places who burn incense upon you, and human bones will be burned upon you.’”
And this thing became sin unto the house of
Jeroboam, even to cut it
off, and to destroy it from
off the face of the earth.
And this was the sin of the house of
Jeroboam that led to its
extermination and destruction from the face of the earth.
Therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of
Jeroboam, and will cut
off from
Jeroboam him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel, and will take away the
remnant of the house of
Jeroboam, as a man taketh away dung, till it be all gone.
Because of all this, behold, I am bringing
disaster on the house of
Jeroboam: I will cut
off from
Jeroboam every male, both slave and free, in Israel; I will burn up the house of
Jeroboam as one burns up dung until it is gone!
Moreover the LORD shall raise him up a king over Israel, who shall cut
off the house of
Jeroboam that day: but what? even now.
Moreover, the LORD will raise up for Himself a king over Israel who will cut
off the house of
Jeroboam. This is the day—
yes, even
today!
And it came to pass, when
Baasha heard thereof, that he left
off building of
Ramah, and dwelt in Tirzah.
For it was so, when
Jezebel cut
off the prophets of the LORD, that
Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and
hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)
for when
Jezebel had slaughtered the prophets of the LORD,
Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them, fifty men per cave, providing them with food and water.)
