Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the
ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof
roar; The LORD of hosts is his name:
Thus says the LORD, who gives the sun for light by day, who sets in
order the moon and stars for light by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves
roar—the LORD of Hosts is His name:
If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever.
“Only if this fixed order departed from My presence, declares the LORD, would Israel’s descendants ever cease to be a nation before Me.”
Thus saith the LORD; If my covenant be not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth;
This is what the LORD says: If I have not established My covenant with the day and the night and the fixed order of heaven and earth,
And I will give the men that have
transgressed my covenant, which have not performed the words of the covenant which they had made before me, when they cut the
calf in
twain, and passed between the parts thereof,
And those who have
transgressed My covenant and have not fulfilled the terms of the covenant they made before Me, I will treat like the
calf they cut in two in
order to pass between its pieces.
Then
Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers street, until all the bread in the city were spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.
So King
Zedekiah gave
orders for Jeremiah to be placed in the
courtyard of the guard and given a
loaf of bread daily from the street of the bakers, until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the
courtyard of the guard.
Now Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon gave charge concerning Jeremiah to Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard, saying,
Now
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had given
orders about Jeremiah through Nebuzaradan captain of the guard, saying,
And they departed, and dwelt in the
habitation of Chimham, which is by
Bethlehem, to go to enter into Egypt,
And they went and stayed in Geruth Chimham, near
Bethlehem, in
order to proceed into Egypt
Order ye the
buckler and shield, and draw near to battle.
“
Deploy your shields, small and large; advance for battle!
The LORD hath done that which he had devised; he hath fulfilled his word that he had commanded in the days of old: he hath thrown down, and hath not
pitied: and he hath caused thine enemy to
rejoice over thee, he hath set up the horn of thine
adversaries.
The LORD has done what He
planned; He has accomplished His decree, which He
ordained in days of old; He has overthrown you without
pity. He has let the enemy
gloat over you and
exalted the horn of your foes.
Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not?
Who has spoken and it came to pass, unless the Lord has ordained it?
And she hath changed my judgments into wickedness more than the nations, and my statutes more than the countries that are round about her: for they have refused my judgments and my statutes, they have not walked in them.
But she has rebelled against My ordinances more wickedly than the nations, and against My statutes worse than the countries around her. For her people have rejected My ordinances and have not walked in My statutes.’
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because ye multiplied more than the nations that are round about you, and have not walked in my statutes, neither have kept my judgments, neither have done according to the judgments of the nations that are round about you;
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘You have been more insubordinate than the nations around you; you have not walked in My statutes or kept My
ordinances, nor have you even
conformed to the
ordinances of the nations around you.’
And ye shall know that I am the LORD: for ye have not walked in my statutes, neither executed my judgments, but have done after the manners of the heathen that are round about you.
Then you will know that I am the LORD. For you have neither followed My statutes nor practiced My
ordinances, but you have
conformed to the
ordinances of the nations around you.”
That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God.
so that they may follow My statutes, keep My ordinances, and practice them. Then they will be My people, and I will be their God.
And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD;
Woe to the women that
sew pillows to all armholes, and make
kerchiefs upon the head of every
stature to
hunt souls! Will ye
hunt the souls of my people, and will ye save the souls alive that come unto you?
and tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says:
Woe to the women who
sew magic charms on their wrists and make veils for the heads of people of every height, in
order to
ensnare their souls. Will you
ensnare the souls of My people but preserve your own?
That the house of Israel may go no more
astray from me, neither be
polluted any more with all their transgressions; but that they may be my people, and I may be their God, saith the Lord GOD.
in
order that the house of Israel may no longer
stray from Me and no longer
defile themselves with all their transgressions. Then they will be My people and I will be their God, declares the Lord GOD.’”
For thus saith the Lord GOD; How much more when I send my four
sore judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the
noisome beast, and the
pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast?
For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘How much worse will it be when I send against Jerusalem My four
dire judgments—sword, famine, wild beasts, and plague—in
order to cut off from it both man and beast?
Behold, therefore I have stretched out my hand over thee, and have diminished thine
ordinary food, and delivered thee unto the will of them that
hate thee, the daughters of the Philistines, which are
ashamed of thy
lewd way.
Therefore I stretched out My hand against you and reduced your portion. I gave you over to the desire of those who
hate you, the daughters of the Philistines, who were
ashamed of your
lewd conduct.
It was planted in a good soil by great waters, that it might bring forth branches, and that it might bear fruit, that it might be a goodly vine.
It had been planted in good soil by abundant waters in order to yield branches and bear fruit and become a splendid vine.’
Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord GOD.
He follows My statutes and faithfully keeps My ordinances. That man is righteous; surely he will live, declares the Lord GOD.
That hath taken off his hand from the poor, that hath not received
usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.
He withholds his hand from
harming the poor and takes no interest or
usury. He keeps My
ordinances and follows My statutes. Such a man will not die for his father’s iniquity. He will surely live.
And I gave them my statutes, and shewed them my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them.
And I gave them My statutes and made known to them My ordinances—for the man who does these things will live by them.
But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness: they walked not in my statutes, and they
despised my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them; and my sabbaths they greatly
polluted: then I said, I would pour out my
fury upon them in the wilderness, to
consume them.
Yet the house of Israel rebelled against Me in the wilderness. They did not follow My statutes and they rejected My
ordinances—though the man who does these things will live by them—and they utterly
profaned My Sabbaths. Then I resolved to pour out My wrath upon them and put an end to them in the wilderness.
Because they
despised my judgments, and walked not in my statutes, but
polluted my sabbaths: for their heart went after their idols.
because they kept
rejecting My
ordinances, refusing to walk in My statutes, and
profaning My Sabbaths; for their hearts continually went after their idols.
But I said unto their children in the wilderness, Walk ye not in the statutes of your fathers, neither observe their judgments, nor
defile yourselves with their idols:
In the wilderness I said to their children: ‘Do not walk in the statutes of your fathers or keep their
ordinances or
defile yourselves with their idols.
I am the LORD your God; walk in my statutes, and keep my judgments, and do them;
I am the LORD your God; walk in My statutes, keep My ordinances, and practice them.
Notwithstanding the children rebelled against me: they walked not in my statutes, neither kept my judgments to do them, which if a man do, he shall even live in them; they
polluted my sabbaths: then I said, I would pour out my
fury upon them, to
accomplish my anger against them in the wilderness.
But the children rebelled against Me. They did not walk in My statutes or carefully observe My
ordinances—though the man who does these things will live by them—and they
profaned My Sabbaths. So I resolved to pour out My wrath upon them and
vent My anger against them in the wilderness.
Because they had not executed my judgments, but had
despised my statutes, and had
polluted my sabbaths, and their eyes were after their fathers’ idols.
For they did not practice My
ordinances, but they rejected My statutes and
profaned My Sabbaths, fixing their eyes on the idols of their fathers.
Wherefore I gave them also statutes that were not good, and judgments whereby they should not live;
I also gave them over to statutes that were not good and ordinances by which they could not live.
And I
polluted them in their own gifts, in that they caused to pass through the fire all that openeth the
womb, that I might make them
desolate, to the end that they might know that I am the LORD.
And I pronounced them unclean through their gifts—the sacrifice of every
firstborn in the fire—so that I might
devastate them, in
order that they would know that I am the LORD.
That it might cause
fury to come up to take
vengeance; I have set her blood upon the top of a rock, that it should not be covered.
In
order to
stir up wrath and take
vengeance, I have placed her blood on the bare rock, so that it would not be covered.’
Thou art the
anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou
wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
You were
anointed as a
guardian cherub, for I had
ordained you. You were on the holy mountain of God; you walked among the
fiery stones.
And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.
And I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes and to carefully observe My ordinances.
And David my servant shall be king over them; and they all shall have one
shepherd: they shall also walk in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them.
My servant David will be king over them, and there will be one
shepherd for all of them. They will follow My
ordinances and keep and observe My statutes.
To take a
spoil, and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the
desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have
gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.
in
order to seize the
spoil and carry off the
plunder, to turn a hand against the
desolate places now inhabited and against a people gathered from the nations, who have acquired
livestock and possessions and who live at the center of the land.’
And seven months shall the house of Israel be
burying of them, that they may
cleanse the land.
For seven months the house of Israel will be
burying them in
order to
cleanse the land.
And the side chambers were three, one over another, and thirty in order; and they entered into the wall which was of the house for the side chambers round about, that they might have hold, but they had not hold in the wall of the house.
The side rooms were arranged one above another in three levels of thirty rooms each. There were ledges all around the wall of the temple to serve as supports for the side rooms, so that the supports would not be fastened into the wall of the temple itself.
And if they be
ashamed of all that they have done,
shew them the form of the house, and the fashion thereof, and the goings out thereof, and the comings in thereof, and all the forms thereof, and all the
ordinances thereof, and all the forms thereof, and all the laws thereof: and write it in their sight, that they may keep the whole form thereof, and all the
ordinances thereof, and do them.
and if they are
ashamed of all they have done, then make known to them the design of the temple—its arrangement and its exits and entrances—its whole design along with all its statutes, forms, and laws. Write it down in their sight, so that they may keep its complete design and all its statutes and may carry them out.
And he said unto me, Son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; These are the
ordinances of the altar in the day when they shall make it, to offer burnt offerings
thereon, and to
sprinkle blood
thereon.
Then He said to me: “Son of man, this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘These are the statutes for the altar on the day it is constructed, so that burnt offerings may be sacrificed on it and blood may be
sprinkled on it:
And the LORD said unto me, Son of man, mark well, and behold with thine eyes, and hear with thine ears all that I say unto thee concerning all the ordinances of the house of the LORD, and all the laws thereof; and mark well the entering in of the house, with every going forth of the sanctuary.
The LORD said to me: “Son of man, pay attention; look carefully with your eyes and
listen closely with your ears to everything I tell you concerning all the statutes and laws of the house of the LORD. Take careful note of the entrance to the temple, along with all the exits of the sanctuary.
And in controversy they shall stand in judgment; and they shall judge it according to my judgments: and they shall keep my laws and my statutes in all mine
assemblies; and they shall
hallow my sabbaths.
In any dispute, they shall
officiate as judges and judge according to My
ordinances. They must keep My laws and statutes regarding all My appointed feasts, and they must keep My Sabbaths holy.
Concerning the
ordinance of oil, the bath of oil, ye shall offer the tenth part of a bath out of the cor, which is an homer of ten baths; for ten baths are an homer:
The prescribed portion of oil, measured by the bath, is a tenth of a bath from each cor (a cor consists of ten baths or one homer, since ten baths are equivalent to a homer).
And thou shalt prepare a meat offering for it every morning, the sixth part of an
ephah, and the third part of an
hin of oil, to temper with the fine flour; a meat offering continually by a perpetual
ordinance unto the LORD.
You are also to provide with it every morning a grain offering of a sixth of an
ephah with a third of a
hin of oil to
moisten the fine flour—a grain offering to the LORD. This is a permanent statute.
And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king’s seed, and of the princes;
Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, the chief of his court officials, to bring in some Israelites from the royal family and the nobility—
Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to
shew the king his dreams. So they came and stood before the king.
So the king gave
orders to
summon the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers, and astrologers to explain his dreams. When they came and stood before the king,
For this cause the king was
angry and very
furious, and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon.
This
response made the king so
furious with anger that he gave
orders to destroy all the wise men of Babylon.
Therefore Daniel went in unto Arioch, whom the king had
ordained to destroy the wise men of Babylon: he went and said thus unto him; Destroy not the wise men of Babylon: bring me in before the king, and I will
shew unto the king the interpretation.
Therefore Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon, and said to him, “Do not
execute the wise men of Babylon! Bring me before the king, and I will give him the interpretation.”
But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but for their sakes that shall make known the interpretation to the king, and that thou mightest know the thoughts of thy heart.
And to me this
mystery has been revealed, not because I have more wisdom than any man alive, but in
order that the interpretation might be made known to the king, and that you may understand the thoughts of your mind.
Then the king
Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face, and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an
oblation and sweet odours unto him.
At this, King
Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face, paid
homage to Daniel, and
ordered that an offering of incense be presented to him.
Then was
Nebuchadnezzar full of
fury, and the form of his
visage was changed against
Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abed-nego: therefore he spake, and commanded that they should heat the furnace one seven times more than it was
wont to be heated.
At this,
Nebuchadnezzar was filled with
rage, and the expression on his face changed toward
Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abednego. He gave
orders to heat the furnace seven times hotter than usual,
Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father
Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein.
Under the influence of the wine,
Belshazzar gave
orders to bring in the gold and silver vessels that
Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken from the temple in Jerusalem, so that the king could drink from them, along with his nobles, his wives, and his concubines.
All the presidents of the kingdom, the governors, and the princes, the counsellors, and the captains, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that
whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.
All the royal administrators, prefects, satraps, advisers, and governors have agreed that the king should establish an
ordinance and
enforce a decree that for thirty days
anyone who petitions any god or man except you, O king, will be thrown into the den of lions.
Then they came near, and spake before the king concerning the king’s decree; Hast thou not signed a decree, that every man that shall ask a petition of any God or man within thirty days, save of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.
So they approached the king and asked about his royal decree: “Did you not sign a decree that for thirty days any man who petitions any god or man except you, O king, will be thrown into the den of lions?” The king replied, “According to the law of the Medes and Persians the
order stands, and it cannot be
repealed.”
Then these men assembled unto the king, and said unto the king, Know, O king, that the law of the Medes and Persians is, That no decree nor statute which the king establisheth may be changed.
Then the men approached the king together and said to him, “Remember, O king, that by the law of the Medes and Persians no decree or
ordinance established by the king can be changed.”
Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee.
So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the den of lions. The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, deliver you!”
Then was the king exceeding
glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of
hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God.
The king was overjoyed and gave
orders to lift Daniel out of the den, and when Daniel was lifted out of the den, no wounds
whatsoever were found on him, because he had trusted in his God.
We have
sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments:
we have
sinned and done wrong. We have acted wickedly and rebelled. We have turned away from Your commandments and
ordinances.
He shall also set his face to enter with the strength of his whole kingdom, and upright ones with him; thus shall he do: and he shall give him the daughter of women, corrupting her: but she shall not stand on his side, neither be for him.
He will
resolve to come with the strength of his whole kingdom, and will reach an agreement with the king of the South. He will give him a daughter in marriage in
order to overthrow the kingdom, but his plan will not succeed or help him.
Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of the children of
Ammon, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have
ripped up the women with child of
Gilead, that they might
enlarge their border:
The LORD’S voice crieth unto the city, and the man of wisdom shall see thy name: hear ye the rod, and who hath appointed it.
The voice of the LORD calls out to the city (and it is sound wisdom to fear Your name): “
Heed the rod and the One who
ordained it.
Art thou not from
everlasting, O LORD my God, mine Holy One? we shall not die. O LORD, thou hast
ordained them for judgment; and, O mighty God, thou hast established them for correction.
Are You not from
everlasting, O LORD, my God, my Holy One? We will not die. O LORD, You have appointed them to
execute judgment; O Rock, You have established them for correction.
Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy
bottle to him, and makest him
drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness!
Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbors, pouring it from the wineskin until they are
drunk, in
order to
gaze at their nakedness!
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the prophets shall be
ashamed every one of his vision, when he hath
prophesied; neither shall they wear a rough garment to
deceive:
And on that day every prophet who prophesies will be
ashamed of his vision, and he will not put on a
hairy cloak in
order to
deceive.
Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return?
Yet from the days of your fathers, you have turned away from My statutes and have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD of Hosts. “But you ask, ‘How can we return?’
Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his
ordinance, and that we have walked
mournfully before the LORD of hosts?
You have said, ‘It is
futile to serve God. What have we gained by keeping His requirements and walking
mournfully before the LORD of Hosts?
Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in
Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments.
“Remember the law of My servant Moses, the statutes and
ordinances I commanded him for all Israel at
Horeb.
Then Herod, when he saw that he was
mocked of the wise men, was exceeding
wroth, and sent forth, and
slew all the children that were in
Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had
diligently enquired of the wise men.
When Herod saw that he had been outwitted by the
Magi, he was filled with
rage. Sending
orders, he put to death all the boys in
Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, according to the time he had learned from the
Magi.
Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave commandment to depart unto the other side.
When Jesus saw a large crowd around Him, He gave orders to cross to the other side of the sea.
And, behold, there was a man which had his hand
withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to
heal on the sabbath days? that they might
accuse him.
and a man with a
withered hand was there. In
order to
accuse Jesus, they asked Him, “Is it lawful to
heal on the Sabbath?”
Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and
garnished.
Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ On its return, it finds the house
vacant, swept clean, and put in
order.
And the king was
sorry: nevertheless for the oath’s sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.
The king was
grieved, but because of his oaths and his guests, he
ordered that her wish be granted
But
forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.
Since the man was unable to pay, the master ordered that he be sold to pay his debt, along with his wife and children and everything he owned.
They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of
divorcement, and to put her away?
“Why then,” they asked, “did Moses
order a man to give his wife a
certificate of
divorce and send her away?”
And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them,
Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?
“Do You hear what these children are saying?” they asked. “
Yes,” Jesus answered. “Have you never read: ‘From the mouths of children and infants You have
ordained praise’?”
Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death;
Now the chief priests and the whole
Sanhedrin were seeking false testimony against Jesus in
order to put Him to death.
He went to
Pilate, and
begged the body of Jesus. Then
Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.
He went to
Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus, and
Pilate ordered that it be given to him.
Command therefore that the
sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and
steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.
So give the
order that the tomb be secured until the third day. Otherwise, His disciples may come and
steal Him away and tell the people He has risen from the dead. And this last
deception would be worse than the first.”
And they watched him, whether he would
heal him on the sabbath day; that they might
accuse him.
In
order to
accuse Jesus, they were watching to see if He would
heal on the Sabbath.
And he
ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to
preach,
He appointed twelve of them, whom He designated as apostles, to
accompany Him, to be sent out to
preach,
And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.
Then Jesus gave strict orders that no one should know about this, and He told them to give her something to eat.
For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife: for he had married her.
For Herod himself had ordered that John be arrested and bound and imprisoned, on account of his brother Philip’s wife Herodias, whom Herod had married.
And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it;
Jesus
ordered them not to tell
anyone. But the more He
ordered them, the more widely they proclaimed it.
And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them.
They also had a few small fish, and Jesus blessed them and ordered that these be set before them as well.
Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in
order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,
Many have undertaken to
compose an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us,
It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in
order, most excellent
Theophilus,
Therefore, having carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an
orderly account for you, most excellent
Theophilus,
And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and
ordinances of the Lord
blameless.
Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, walking
blamelessly in all the commandments and decrees of the Lord.
And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his course,
One day while
Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God,
And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the
brow of the hill
whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down
headlong.
They got up, drove Him out of the town, and led Him to the
brow of the hill on which the town was built, in
order to throw Him over the
cliff.
And they
besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep.
And the demons kept
begging Jesus not to
order them to go into the
Abyss.
And her parents were
astonished: but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done.
Her parents were
astounded, but Jesus
ordered them not to tell
anyone what had happened.
And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and
garnished.
On its return, it finds the house swept clean and put in order.
And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.
‘Sir,’ the servant replied, ‘what you ordered has been done, and there is still room.’
And they watched him, and sent forth
spies, which should
feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.
So they watched Him closely and sent
spies who pretended to be
sincere. They were hoping to catch Him in His words in
order to hand Him over to the rule and authority of the governor.
This they said,
tempting him, that they might have to
accuse him. But Jesus
stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.
They said this to test Him, in
order to have a basis for
accusing Him. But Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with His finger.
Therefore
doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.
The reason the Father loves Me is that I lay down My life in order to take it up again.
Now both the chief priests and the
Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should
shew it, that they might take him.
But the chief priests and
Pharisees had given
orders that
anyone who knew where He was must report it, so that they could arrest Him.
Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and
ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that
whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
