mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods
overflow me.

Let not the

beard over the

overseer or ruler,
When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.

fool; much less for a servant to have rule
over princes.
Luxury is unseemly for a
fool— how much worse for a slave to rule
over princes!

patience, and his virtue is to
overlook an
offense.

over with thorns, and

I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
I, the Teacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have
gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem:
yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.
I said to myself, “Behold, I have grown and increased in wisdom beyond all those before me who were over Jerusalem, and my mind has observed a wealth of wisdom and knowledge.”
The wise man’s eyes are in his head; but the
fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all.
The wise man has eyes in his head, but the
fool walks in darkness. Yet I also came to
realize that one fate
overcomes them both.
And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a
fool? yet shall he have rule
over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.
And who knows whether that man will be wise or
foolish? Yet he will take
over all the labor at which I have worked
skillfully under the sun. This too is
futile.
Therefore I went about to cause my heart to
despair of all the labour which I took under the sun.
So my heart began to
despair over all the labor that I had done under the sun.
For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the
sinner he giveth
travail, to gather and to
heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and
vexation of spirit.
To the man who is pleasing in His sight, He gives wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the
sinner He assigns the task of gathering and
accumulating that which he will hand
over to one who pleases God. This too is
futile and a pursuit of the wind.
For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other;
yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.
For the fates of both men and beasts are the same: As one dies, so dies the other—they all have the same breath. Man has no advantage
over the animals, since everything is
futile.
And if one prevail against him, two shall
withstand him; and a
threefold cord is not quickly broken.
And though one may be overpowered, two can resist. Moreover, a cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and violent
perverting of judgment and justice in a province,
marvel not at the matter: for he that is higher than the highest regardeth; and there be higher than they.
If you see the oppression of the poor and the
denial of justice and righteousness in the province, do not be
astonished at the matter; for one official is watched by a superior, and others higher still are
over them.
Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place?
even if he lives a thousand years twice over but fails to enjoy his prosperity. Do not all go to the same place?
For what hath the wise more than the
fool? what hath the poor, that knoweth to walk before the living?
What advantage, then, has the wise man
over the
fool? What gain comes to the poor man who knows how to conduct himself before others?
In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of
adversity consider: God also hath set the one
over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.
In the day of prosperity, be joyful, but in the day of
adversity, consider this: God has made one of these along with the other, so that a man cannot discover anything that will come after him.
Be not righteous
over much; neither make
thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy
thyself?
Do not be
overly righteous, and do not make
yourself too wise. Why should you destroy
yourself?
Be not
over much wicked, neither be thou
foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?
Do not be excessively wicked, and do not be a
fool. Why should you die before your time?
There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.
As no man has power over the wind to contain it, so no one has authority over his day of death. As no one can be discharged in wartime, so wickedness will not release those who practice it.
All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man ruleth
over another to his own
hurt.
All this I have seen, applying my mind to every deed that is done under the sun; there is a time when one man lords it
over another to his own
detriment.
The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.
The calm words of the wise are
heeded over the shouts of a ruler among fools.
He has brought me to the house of wine, and his
banner over me is love.
The voice of my beloved! behold, he cometh
leaping upon the mountains,
skipping upon the hills.

leaping across the mountains, bounding
over the hills.

beryl: his
belly is as bright ivory
overlaid with sapphires.

beryl. His body is an ivory
panel bedecked with sapphires.
Turn away thine eyes from me, for they have
overcome me: thy hair is as a flock of goats that appear from
Gilead.
Turn your eyes away from me, for they have
overcome me. Your hair is like a flock of goats streaming down from
Gilead.
And the roof of thy mouth like the best wine for my beloved, that goeth down sweetly, causing the lips of those that are
asleep to speak.
and your mouth like the finest wine. May it flow smoothly to my beloved,
gliding gently
over lips and teeth.
Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most
vehement flame.
Set me as a seal
over your heart, as a seal upon your arm. For love is as strong as death, its jealousy as
unrelenting as
Sheol. Its sparks are
fiery flames, the fiercest
blaze of all.
Your country is
desolate, your cities are burned with fire: your land, strangers
devour it in your presence, and it is
desolate, as
overthrown by strangers.
