Hear, O our God; for we are
despised: and turn their
reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity:

despised. Turn their
scorn back upon their own heads, and let them be taken as
plunder to a land of captivity.
But it came to pass, that when
Sanballat, and
Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the
Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very
wroth,
When
Sanballat and
Tobiah, together with the Arabs,
Ammonites, and Ashdodites, heard that the
repair to the walls of Jerusalem was progressing and that the gaps were being closed, they were
furious,
Also I said, It is not good that ye do: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies?
So I continued, “What you are doing is not right. Shouldn’t you walk in the fear of our God to avoid the reproach of our foreign enemies?
Then said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.
“We will restore it,” they replied, “and will require nothing more from them. We will do as you say.” So I summoned the priests and required of the nobles and officials an oath that they would do what they had promised.
Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner.
Four times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave the same reply.
Wherein was written, It is
reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to
rebel: for which cause thou buildest the wall, that thou mayest be their king, according to these words.
that read: “It is
reported among the nations—and Geshem agrees—that you and the Jews are
plotting to revolt, and this is why you are building the wall. According to these
reports, you are to become their king,
And thou hast also appointed prophets to
preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah: and now shall it be
reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.
and you have even appointed prophets in Jerusalem to
proclaim on your behalf: ‘There is a king in Judah.’ Soon these rumors will reach the ears of the king. So come, let us
confer together.”
Then I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart.
Then I sent him this
reply: “There is nothing to these rumors you are spreading; you are
inventing them in your own mind.”
And I said, Should such a man as I
flee? and who is there, that, being as I am, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.
But I replied, “Should a man like me run away? Should one like me go into the temple to save his own life? I will not go!”
Therefore was he
hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil
report, that they might
reproach me.
He had been
hired to
intimidate me so that I would sin by doing as he suggested, so they could give me a bad name in order to discredit me.
Also they
reported his good deeds before me, and uttered my words to him. And
Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.
Moreover, these nobles kept
reporting to me
Tobiah’s good deeds, and they relayed my words to him. And
Tobiah sent letters to
intimidate me.
And Memucan answered before the king and the princes, Vashti the queen hath not done wrong to the king only, but also to all the princes, and to all the people that are in all the provinces of the king
Ahasuerus.
And in the presence of the king and his princes, Memucan
replied, “Queen Vashti has wronged not only the king, but all the princes and the peoples in all the provinces of King
Xerxes.
For this deed of the queen shall come abroad unto all women, so that they shall
despise their husbands in their eyes, when it shall be
reported, The king
Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she came not.
For the conduct of the queen will become known to all women, causing them to
despise their husbands and say, ‘King
Xerxes ordered Queen Vashti to be brought before him, but she did not come.’
If it please the king, let there go a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king
Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than she.
So if it pleases the king, let him issue a royal decree, and let it be recorded in the laws of Persia and Media so that it cannot be
repealed, that Vashti shall never again enter the presence of King
Xerxes, and that her royal position shall be given to a woman better than she.
When
Mordecai learned of the plot, he
reported it to Queen
Esther, and she informed the king on
Mordecai’s behalf.
And when
inquisition was made of the matter, it was found out; therefore they were both
hanged on a tree: and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king.
After the
report had been investigated and
verified, both officials were
hanged on the
gallows. And all this was recorded in the Book of the Chronicles in the presence of the king.
Now it came to pass, when they spake daily unto him, and he
hearkened not unto them, that they told
Haman, to see whether
Mordecai’s matters would stand: for he had told them that he was a
Jew.
Then
Mordecai commanded to answer
Esther, Think not with
thyself that thou shalt escape in the king’s house, more than all the Jews.
he sent back to her this reply: “Do not imagine that because you are in the king’s palace you alone will escape the fate of all the Jews.
And
Esther answered, If it seem good unto the king, let the king and
Haman come this day unto the
banquet that I have prepared for him.
“If it pleases the king,”
Esther replied, “may the king and
Haman come
today to the
banquet I have prepared for the king.”
Then answered
Esther, and said, My petition and my request is;
Esther replied, “This is my petition and my request:
And the king said, What honour and dignity hath been done to
Mordecai for this? Then said the king’s servants that ministered unto him, There is nothing done for him.
The king inquired, “What honor or dignity has been bestowed on
Mordecai for this act?” “Nothing has been done for him,”
replied the king’s attendants.
Then
Esther the queen answered and said, If I have found favour in thy sight, O king, and if it please the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request:
Queen
Esther replied, “If I have found favor in your sight, O king, and if it pleases the king, grant me my life as my petition, and the lives of my people as my request.
And Harbonah, one of the chamberlains, said before the king, Behold also, the
gallows fifty cubits high, which
Haman had made for
Mordecai, who had spoken good for the king, standeth in the house of
Haman. Then the king said,
Hang him
thereon.
Then Harbonah, one of the eunuchs attending the king, said: “There is a
gallows fifty cubits high at
Haman’s house. He had it built for
Mordecai, who gave the
report that saved the king.” “
Hang him on it!” declared the king.
On that day the number of those that were slain in
Shushan the palace was brought before the king.
On that day the number of those killed in the citadel of
Susa was
reported to the king,
Then said
Esther, If it please the king, let it be granted to the Jews which are in
Shushan to do to
morrow also according unto this day’s decree, and let
Haman’s ten sons be
hanged upon the
gallows.
And the LORD said unto
Satan, Whence comest thou? Then
Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and
fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
“Where have you come from?” said the LORD to
Satan. “From
roaming through the earth,” he
replied, “and walking back and forth in it.”
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
While he was still speaking, another
messenger came and
reported: “The fire of God fell from heaven. It burned and consumed the sheep and the servants, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away,
yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
While he was still speaking, another
messenger came and
reported: “The Chaldeans formed three bands,
raided the camels, and took them away. They put the servants to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house:
While he was still speaking, another
messenger came and
reported: “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,
And the LORD said unto
Satan, From whence comest thou? And
Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and
fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
“Where have you come from?” said the LORD to
Satan. “From
roaming through the earth,” he
replied, “and walking back and forth in it.”
And
Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin,
yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.
“Skin for skin!”
Satan replied. “A man will give up all he owns in exchange for his life.
Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:
But Job answered and said,
Then Job replied:
How forcible are right words! but what
doth your
arguing reprove?
How painful are
honest words! But what does your argument prove?
Do ye imagine to
reprove words, and the speeches of one that is
desperate, which are as wind?
Do you intend to correct my words, and treat as wind my cry of
despair?
Then answered
Bildad the Shuhite, and said,
Then
Bildad the Shuhite
replied:
Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said,
Then Zophar the Naamathite replied:
He will surely reprove you, if ye do secretly accept persons.
Then call thou, and I will answer: or let me speak, and answer thou me.
Then call me, and I will answer, or let me speak, and You can reply.
Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,
Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:
They open their mouths against me and strike my cheeks with contempt; they join together against me.
Then answered
Bildad the Shuhite, and said,
Then
Bildad the Shuhite
replied:
Wherefore are we counted as beasts, and
reputed vile in your sight?
Why are we regarded as cattle, as
stupid in your sight?
These ten times have ye
reproached me: ye are not
ashamed that ye make
yourselves strange to me.
Ten times now you have
reproached me; you
shamelessly mistreat me.
If indeed you would
exalt yourselves above me and use my disgrace against me,
My breath is strange to my wife, though I intreated for the children’s sake of mine own body.
Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said,
Then Zophar the Naamathite replied:
I have heard the check of my reproach, and the spirit of my understanding causeth me to answer.
I have heard a
rebuke that insults me, and my understanding prompts a
reply.
God layeth up his iniquity for his children: he rewardeth him, and he shall know it.
It is said that God lays up one’s punishment for his children. Let God repay the man himself, so he will know it.
Have ye not asked them that go by the way? and do ye not know their
tokens,
Have you never asked those who travel the roads? Do you not accept their reports?
Who shall declare his way to his face? and who shall repay him what he hath done?
Who denounces his
behavior to his face? Who
repays him for what he has done?
Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:
Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment?
Is it for your reverence that He rebukes you and enters into judgment against you?
Then answered
Bildad the Shuhite, and said,
Then
Bildad the Shuhite
replied:
My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go: my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.
I will
cling to my righteousness and never let go. As long as I live, my conscience will not
accuse me.
When
Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, then his wrath was
kindled.
But when he saw that the three men had no further
reply, his anger was
kindled.
When I had waited, (for they spake not, but stood still, and answered no more;)
Must I wait, now that they are silent, now that they stand and no longer reply?
For the work of a man shall he render unto him, and cause every man to find according to his ways.
For according to a man’s deeds He repays him; according to a man’s ways He brings consequences.
Should it be according to thy mind? he will
recompense it, whether thou refuse, or whether thou choose; and not I: therefore speak what thou knowest.
Should God
repay you on your own terms when you have
disavowed His? You must choose, not I; so tell me what you know.
I will answer thee, and thy companions with thee.
I will reply to you and to your friends as well.
Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are?
Can you send the
lightning bolts on their way? Do they
report to you, ‘Here we are’?
Shall he that contendeth with the
Almighty instruct him? he that
reproveth God, let him answer it.
“Will the faultfinder
contend with the
Almighty? Let him who argues with God give an answer.”
Behold, I am
vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth.
“Behold, I am insignificant. How can I reply to You? I place my hand over my mouth.
Lay thine hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more.
If you lay a hand on him, you will remember the battle and never
repeat it!
Who hath prevented me, that I should
repay him?
whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine.
Who has given to Me that I should repay him? Everything under heaven is Mine.
