And he called the
porters; and they told it to the king’s house within.
The gatekeepers
shouted the news, and it was
reported to the king’s household.
And one of his servants answered and said, Let some take, I pray thee, five of the horses that remain, which are left in the city, (behold, they are as all the multitude of Israel that are left in it: behold, I say, they are even as all the multitude of the Israelites that are consumed:) and let us send and see.
But one of his servants
replied, “Please, have scouts take five of the horses that remain in the city. Their
plight will be no worse than all the Israelites who are left here. You can see that all the Israelites here are
doomed. So let us send them and find out.”
And that lord answered the man of God, and said, Now, behold, if the LORD should make windows in heaven, might such a thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof.
And the officer had answered the man of God, “Look, even if the LORD were to make windows in heaven, could this really happen?” So
Elisha had
replied, “You will see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat any of it!”
And
Hazael said, Why weepeth my lord? And he answered, Because I know the evil that thou
wilt do unto the children of Israel: their strong holds
wilt thou set on fire, and their young men
wilt thou
slay with the sword, and
wilt dash their children, and
rip up their women with child.
“Why is my lord
weeping?” asked
Hazael. “Because I know the evil you will do to the Israelites,”
Elisha replied. “You will set fire to their fortresses, kill their young men with the sword,
dash their little ones to pieces, and
rip open their
pregnant women.”
So he departed from
Elisha, and came to his master; who said to him, What said
Elisha to thee? And he answered, He told me that thou shouldest surely recover.
So
Hazael left
Elisha and went to his master, who asked him, “What did
Elisha say to you?” And he
replied, “He told me that you would surely recover.”
And when he came, behold, the captains of the host were sitting; and he said, I have an
errand to thee, O captain. And
Jehu said, Unto which of all us? And he said, To thee, O captain.
and when he arrived, the army commanders were sitting there. “I have a message for you, commander,” he said. “For which of us?” asked
Jehu. “For you, commander,” he
replied.
Then
Jehu came forth to the servants of his lord: and one said unto him, Is all well? wherefore came this
mad fellow to thee? And he said unto them, Ye know the man, and his communication.
When
Jehu went out to the servants of his master, they asked, “Is everything all right? Why did this
madman come to you?” “You know his kind and their
babble,” he
replied.
So there went one on
horseback to meet him, and said, Thus saith the king, Is it peace? And
Jehu said, What hast thou to do with peace? turn thee behind me. And the
watchman told, saying, The
messenger came to them, but he cometh not again.
So a
horseman rode off to meet
Jehu and said, “This is what the king asks: ‘Have you come in peace?’” “What do you know about peace?”
Jehu replied. “Fall in behind me.” And the
watchman reported, “The
messenger reached them, but he is not coming back.”
Then he sent out a second on
horseback, which came to them, and said, Thus saith the king, Is it peace? And
Jehu answered, What hast thou to do with peace? turn thee behind me.
So the king sent out a second
horseman, who went to them and said, “This is what the king asks: ‘Have you come in peace?’” “What do you know about peace?”
Jehu replied. “Fall in behind me.”
And the
watchman told, saying, He came even unto them, and cometh not again: and the driving is like the driving of
Jehu the son of Nimshi; for he driveth
furiously.
Again the
watchman reported, “He reached them, but he is not coming back. And the
charioteer is driving like
Jehu son of Nimshi—he is driving like a
madman!”
And it came to pass, when
Joram saw
Jehu, that he said, Is it peace,
Jehu? And he answered, What peace, so long as the whoredoms of thy mother
Jezebel and her witchcrafts are so many?
Surely I have seen
yesterday the blood of
Naboth, and the blood of his sons, saith the LORD; and I will requite thee in this
plat, saith the LORD. Now therefore take and cast him into the
plat of ground, according to the word of the LORD.
‘As surely as I saw the blood of
Naboth and the blood of his sons
yesterday, declares the LORD, so will I
repay you on this plot of ground, declares the LORD.’ Now then, according to the word of the LORD,
pick him up and throw him on the plot of ground.”
Wherefore they came again, and told him. And he said, This is the word of the LORD, which he spake by his servant
Elijah the Tishbite, saying, In the portion of
Jezreel shall dogs eat the flesh of
Jezebel:
So they went back and told
Jehu, who
replied, “This is the word of the LORD, which He spoke through His servant
Elijah the Tishbite: ‘On the plot of ground at
Jezreel the dogs will
devour the flesh of
Jezebel.
And when he was departed thence, he lighted on Jehonadab the son of Rechab coming to meet him: and he
saluted him, and said to him, Is thine heart right, as my heart is with thy heart? And Jehonadab answered, It is. If it be, give me thine hand. And he gave him his hand; and he took him up to him into the
chariot.
When he left there, he found Jehonadab son of Rechab, who was coming to meet him.
Jehu greeted him and asked, “Is your heart as true to mine as my heart is to yours?” “It is!” Jehonadab
replied. “If it is,” said
Jehu, “give me your hand.” So he gave him his hand, and
Jehu helped him into his
chariot,
Let the priests take it to them, every man of his acquaintance: and let them
repair the breaches of the house,
wheresoever any breach shall be found.
Let every priest receive it from his
constituency, and let it be used to
repair any damage found in the temple.”
But it was so, that in the three and
twentieth year of king Jehoash the priests had not
repaired the breaches of the house.
By the twenty-third year of the reign of
Joash, however, the priests had not yet
repaired the damage to the temple.
Then king Jehoash called for Jehoiada the priest, and the other priests, and said unto them, Why repair ye not the breaches of the house? now therefore receive no more money of your acquaintance, but deliver it for the breaches of the house.
So King
Joash called Jehoiada and the other priests and said, “Why have you not
repaired the damage to the temple? Now, therefore, take no more money from your
constituency, but hand it over for the
repair of the temple.”
And the priests consented to receive no more money of the people, neither to repair the breaches of the house.
So the priests agreed that they would not receive money from the people and that they would not repair the temple themselves.
And to masons, and hewers of stone, and to
buy timber and
hewed stone to
repair the breaches of the house of the LORD, and for all that was laid out for the house to
repair it.
masons, and stonecutters. They also purchased timber and dressed stone to repair the damage to the house of the LORD, and they paid the other expenses of the temple repairs.
But they gave that to the workmen, and
repaired therewith the house of the LORD.
Instead, it was paid to those doing the work, and with it they repaired the house of the LORD.
And Jehoash the king of Israel sent to
Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The
thistle that was in
Lebanon sent to the
cedar that was in
Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in
Lebanon, and
trode down the
thistle.
And the king of Assyria brought men from Babylon, and from Cuthah, and from
Ava, and from
Hamath, and from
Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the children of Israel: and they possessed Samaria, and dwelt in the cities thereof.
Then the king of Assyria brought people from Babylon, Cuthah, Avva,
Hamath, and
Sepharvaim and settled them in the towns of Samaria to
replace the Israelites. They took possession of Samaria and lived in its towns.
How then
wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for
chariots and for
horsemen?
For how can you
repel a single officer among the least of my master’s servants when you depend on Egypt for
chariots and
horsemen?
But
Rab-shakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own
piss with you.
But the
Rabshakeh replied, “Has my master sent me to speak these words only to you and your master, and not to the men sitting on the wall, who are destined with you to eat their own dung and drink their own
urine?”
And it came to pass, when king
Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with
sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD.
On hearing this
report, King
Hezekiah tore his clothes, put on
sackcloth, and entered the house of the LORD.
It may be the LORD thy God will hear all the words of
Rab-shakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to
reproach the living God; and will
reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the
remnant that are left.
Perhaps the LORD your God will hear all the words of the
Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to
defy the living God, and He will
rebuke him for the words that the LORD your God has heard. Therefore lift up a prayer for the
remnant that still survives.”
And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say to your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words which thou hast heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have
blasphemed me.
who
replied, “Tell your master that this is what the LORD says: ‘Do not be afraid of the words you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have
blasphemed Me.
LORD, bow down thine ear, and hear: open, LORD, thine eyes, and see: and hear the words of
Sennacherib, which hath sent him to
reproach the living God.
Whom hast thou
reproached and
blasphemed? and against whom hast thou
exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.
Whom have you
taunted and
blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes in pride? Against the Holy One of Israel!
By the messengers thou hast
reproached the Lord, and hast said, With the multitude of my
chariots I am come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of
Lebanon, and will cut down the tall
cedar trees thereof, and the choice
fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the lodgings of his borders, and into the forest of his
Carmel.
Through your servants you have
taunted the Lord, and you have said: “With my many
chariots I have ascended to the heights of the mountains, to the remote peaks of
Lebanon. I have cut down its tallest cedars, the finest of its
cypresses. I have reached its
farthest outposts, the densest of its forests.
And Isaiah said, This sign shalt thou have of the LORD, that the LORD will do the thing that he hath spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten degrees, or go back ten degrees?
And Isaiah had replied, “This will be a sign to you from the LORD that He will do what He has promised: Would you like the shadow to go forward ten steps, or back ten steps?”
Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king
Hezekiah, and said unto him, What said these men? and from whence came they unto thee? And
Hezekiah said, They are come from a far country, even from Babylon.
Then the prophet Isaiah went to King
Hezekiah and asked, “Where did those men come from, and what did they say to you?” “They came from a distant land,”
Hezekiah replied, “from Babylon.”
And let them deliver it into the hand of the doers of the work, that have the oversight of the house of the LORD: and let them give it to the doers of the work which is in the house of the LORD, to repair the breaches of the house,
And let them deliver it into the hands of the supervisors of those doing the work on the house of the LORD, who in turn are to give it to the workmen repairing the damages to the house of the LORD—
Unto carpenters, and builders, and masons, and to
buy timber and
hewn stone to
repair the house.
to the carpenters, builders, and masons—to
buy timber and dressed stone to
repair the temple.
And Shaphan the
scribe came to the king, and brought the king word again, and said, Thy servants have gathered the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of them that do the work, that have the oversight of the house of the LORD.
And Shaphan the
scribe went to the king and
reported, “Your servants have paid out the money that was found in the temple and have put it into the hands of the workers and supervisors of the house of the LORD.”
Then he said, What title is that that I see? And the men of the city told him, It is the
sepulchre of the man of God, which came from Judah, and proclaimed these things that thou hast done against the altar of
Bethel.
Then the king asked, “What is this monument I see?” And the men of the city
replied, “It is the tomb of the man of God who came from Judah and pronounced these things that you have done to the altar of
Bethel.”
And the sons of Hananiah; Pelatiah, and Jesaiah: the sons of
Rephaiah, the sons of Arnan, the sons of
Obadiah, the sons of Shechaniah.
The descendants of Hananiah: Pelatiah, Jeshaiah, and the sons of
Rephaiah, of Arnan, of
Obadiah, and of Shecaniah.
And some of them, even of the sons of
Simeon, five hundred men, went to mount
Seir, having for their captains Pelatiah, and Neariah, and
Rephaiah, and Uzziel, the sons of Ishi.
And five hundred of these Simeonites led by Pelatiah, Neariah,
Rephaiah, and Uzziel, the sons of Ishi, went to Mount
Seir And the sons of
Tola; Uzzi, and
Rephaiah, and Jeriel, and Jahmai, and Jibsam, and Shemuel, heads of their father’s house, to wit, of
Tola: they were
valiant men of might in their generations; whose number was in the days of David two and twenty thousand and six hundred.
The sons of
Tola: Uzzi,
Rephaiah, Jeriel, Jahmai, Ibsam, and Shemuel, the heads of their families. In the days of David, 22,600 descendants of
Tola were numbered in their
genealogies as mighty men of
valor.
And Rephah was his son, also Resheph, and Telah his son, and Tahan his son,
Additionally, Rephah was his son, Resheph his son, Telah his son, Tahan his son,
And Moza
begat Binea; and
Rephaiah his son, Eleasah his son, Azel his son.
Moza was the father of Binea. Rephaiah was his son, Elasah his son, and Azel his son.
And he built the city round about, even from
Millo round about: and
Joab repaired the rest of the city.
He built up the city around it, from the supporting terraces to the surrounding wall, while
Joab restored the rest of the city.
Now three of the thirty captains went down to the rock to David, into the cave of
Adullam; and the host of the Philistines
encamped in the valley of
Rephaim.
Three of the thirty chief men went down to David, to the rock at the cave of
Adullam, while a company of Philistines was
encamped in the Valley of
Rephaim.
And the Philistines came and spread themselves in the valley of
Rephaim.
And David enquired of God, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines? and
wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto him, Go up; for I will deliver them into thine hand.
So David inquired of God, “Should I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?” “Go,” replied the LORD, “for I will deliver them into your hand.”
He suffered no man to do them wrong:
yea, he
reproved kings for their sakes,
Then
Nathan said unto David, Do all that is in thine heart; for God is with thee.
And
Nathan replied to David, “Do all that is in your heart, for God is with you.”
And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel, and passed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in
array against them. So when David had put the battle in
array against the Syrians, they fought with him.
When this was
reported to David, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan, advanced toward the Arameans, and
arrayed for battle against them. When David lined up to
engage them in battle, they fought against him.
And it came to pass after this, that there arose war at
Gezer with the Philistines; at which time Sibbechai the Hushathite
slew Sippai, that was of the children of the
giant: and they were subdued.
Some time later, war broke out with the Philistines at
Gezer. At that time Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Sippai, a
descendant of the
Rephaim, and the Philistines were subdued.
And David said to
Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beer-
sheba even to
Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.
So David said to
Joab and the commanders of the troops, “Go and count the Israelites from
Beersheba to
Dan and bring me a
report, so that I may know their number.”
And
Joab answered, The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s servants? why then
doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of
trespass to Israel?
But
Joab replied, “May the LORD multiply His troops a hundred times over. My lord the king, are they not all servants of my lord? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel?”
And
Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred
threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword.
And
Joab reported to David the total number of the troops. In all Israel there were 1,100,000 men who drew the sword, including 470,000 in Judah.
Either three years’ famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the
pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore
advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.
between three years of famine, three months of being swept away before your enemies and overtaken by their swords, or three days of the sword of the LORD—days of plague upon the land, with the angel of the LORD
ravaging every part of Israel.’ Now then, decide how I should
reply to Him who sent me.”
And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the LORD
beheld, and he
repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
Then God sent an angel to destroy Jerusalem, but as the angel was doing so, the LORD saw it and relented from the
calamity, and He said to the angel who was destroying the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand now!” At that time the angel of the LORD was standing by the
threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
And king David said to Ornan,
Nay; but I will
verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.
“No,”
replied King David, “I
insist on paying the full price, for I will not take for the LORD what belongs to you, nor will I offer burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”
The sons of Shemaiah; Othni, and
Rephael, and Obed, Elzabad, whose brethren were strong men,
Elihu, and Semachiah.
Shemaiah’s sons were Othni,
Rephael, Obed, and Elzabad; his brothers were
Elihu and Semachiah, also capable men.
Out of the spoils won in battles did they
dedicate to maintain the house of the LORD.
They had dedicated some of the
plunder from their battles to the
repair of the house of the LORD.
And Solomon said unto God, Thou hast shewed great mercy unto David my father, and hast made me to reign in his
stead.
Solomon replied to God: “You have shown much loving devotion to my father David, and You have made me king in his place.
Then Huram the king of Tyre answered in writing, which he sent to Solomon, Because the LORD hath loved his people, he hath made thee king over them.
Then
Hiram king of Tyre wrote a letter in
reply to Solomon: “Because the LORD loves His people, He has set you over them as king.”
Then hear thou from heaven thy dwelling place, and
forgive, and render unto every man according unto all his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou only knowest the hearts of the children of men:)
be heard by You from heaven, Your dwelling place. And may You
forgive and
repay each man according to all his ways, since You know his heart—for You alone know the hearts of men—
Yet if they
bethink themselves in the land
whither they are carried
captive, and turn and pray unto thee in the land of their captivity, saying, We have
sinned, we have done
amiss, and have dealt wickedly;
and when they come to their senses in the land to which they were taken, and they
repent and
plead with You in the land of their captors, saying, ‘We have
sinned and done wrong; we have acted wickedly,’
And she said to the king, It was a true report which I heard in mine own land of thine acts, and of thy wisdom:
She said to the king, “The report I heard in my own country about your words and wisdom is true.
Howbeit I believed not their words, until I came, and mine eyes had seen it: and, behold, the one half of the greatness of thy wisdom was not told me: for thou exceedest the fame that I heard.
But I did not believe the reports until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not half of the greatness of your wisdom was told to me. You have far exceeded the report I heard.
And they spake unto him, saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever.
They
replied, “If you will be kind to these people and please them by speaking kind words to them, they will be your servants
forever.”
And the young men that were brought up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer the people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it somewhat lighter for us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins.
The young men who had grown up with him
replied, “This is how you should answer these people who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you should make it lighter.’ This is what you should tell them: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s
waist!
And
Ahab king of Israel said unto
Jehoshaphat king of Judah,
Wilt thou go with me to
Ramoth-
gilead? And he answered him, I am as thou art, and my people as thy people; and we will be with thee in the war.
Ahab king of Israel asked
Jehoshaphat king of Judah, “Will you go with me against
Ramoth-
gilead?” And
Jehoshaphat replied, “I am like you, and my people are your people; we will join you in the war.”
Therefore the king of Israel gathered together of prophets four hundred men, and said unto them, Shall we go to
Ramoth-
gilead to battle, or shall I
forbear? And they said, Go up; for God will deliver it into the king’s hand.
So the king of Israel assembled the prophets, four hundred men, and asked them, “Should we go to war against
Ramoth-
gilead, or should we
refrain?” “Go up,” they
replied, “and God will deliver it into the hand of the king.”
And the king of Israel said unto
Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, by whom we may
enquire of the LORD: but I
hate him; for he never
prophesied good unto me, but always evil: the same is Micaiah the son of Imla. And
Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.
The king of Israel answered, “There is still one man who can ask the LORD, but I
hate him because he never prophesies anything good for me, but only bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.” “The king should not say that!”
Jehoshaphat replied.
And when he was come to the king, the king said unto him, Micaiah, shall we go to
Ramoth-
gilead to battle, or shall I
forbear? And he said, Go ye up, and
prosper, and they shall be delivered into your hand.
When Micaiah arrived, the king asked him, “Micaiah, should we go to war against
Ramoth-
gilead, or should we
refrain?” “Go up and triumph,” Micaiah
replied, “for they will be given into your hand.”
And he said, I will go out, and be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And the LORD said, Thou shalt
entice him, and thou shalt also prevail: go out, and do even so.
And he
replied, ‘I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouths of all his prophets.’ ‘You will surely
entice him and prevail,’ said the LORD. ‘Go and do it.’
And Micaiah said, Behold, thou shalt see on that day when thou shalt go into an inner chamber to hide
thyself.
Micaiah replied, “You will soon see, on that day when you go and hide in an inner room.”
And Micaiah said, If thou certainly return in peace, then hath not the LORD spoken by me. And he said,
Hearken, all ye people.
But Micaiah
replied, “If you ever return safely, the LORD has not spoken through me.” Then he added, “Take
heed, all you people!”
Behold, I say, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to
inherit.
See how they are repaying us by coming to drive us out of the possession that You gave us as an inheritance.
And it came to pass after this, that
Joash was minded to
repair the house of the LORD.
Some time later,
Joash set his heart on
repairing the house of the LORD.
And he gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, Go out unto the cities of Judah, and gather of all Israel money to
repair the house of your God from year to year, and see that ye
hasten the matter.
Howbeit the Levites
hastened it not.
So he gathered the priests and Levites and said, “Go out to the cities of Judah and collect the money due annually from all Israel, to
repair the house of your God. Do it quickly.” The Levites, however, did not make
haste.
And the king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of the house of the LORD, and
hired masons and carpenters to
repair the house of the LORD, and also such as wrought iron and brass to
mend the house of the LORD.
Then the king and Jehoiada would give the money to those who
supervised the labor on the house of the LORD to
hire stonecutters and carpenters to restore the house of the LORD, as well as workers in iron and bronze to
repair the house of the LORD.
So the workmen wrought, and the work was perfected by them, and they set the house of God in his state, and strengthened it.
So the workmen labored, and in their hands the
repair work progressed. They restored the house of God according to its specifications, and they
reinforced it.
Now concerning his sons, and the greatness of the burdens laid upon him, and the
repairing of the house of God, behold, they are written in the story of the book of the kings. And
Amaziah his son reigned in his
stead.
The accounts of the sons of
Joash, as well as the many pronouncements about him and about the restoration of the house of God, are indeed written in the Treatise of the Book of the Kings. And his son
Amaziah reigned in his place.
And
Amaziah said to the man of God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of God answered, The LORD is able to give thee much more than this.
Amaziah asked the man of God, “What should I do about the hundred talents I have given to the army of Israel?” And the man of God
replied, “The LORD is able to give you much more than this.”
He in the first year of his reign, in the first month, opened the doors of the house of the LORD, and repaired them.
In the first month of the first year of his reign,
Hezekiah opened and
repaired the doors of the house of the LORD.
Then they went in to
Hezekiah the king, and said, We have
cleansed all the house of the LORD, and the altar of burnt offering, with all the vessels thereof, and the
shewbread table, with all the vessels thereof.
Then they went in to King
Hezekiah and
reported, “We have
cleansed the entire house of the LORD, the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the table of the
showbread with all its utensils.
Also he strengthened himself, and built up all the wall that was broken, and raised it up to the towers, and another wall without, and
repaired Millo in the city of David, and made darts and shields in abundance.
Then
Hezekiah worked
resolutely to rebuild all the broken sections of the wall and to raise up towers on it. He also built an outer wall and
reinforced the supporting terraces of the City of David, and he produced an abundance of weapons and shields.
But
Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit done unto him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem.
But because his heart was proud,
Hezekiah did not
repay the favor shown to him. Therefore wrath came upon him and upon Judah and Jerusalem.
And he
repaired the altar of the LORD, and sacrificed
thereon peace offerings and
thank offerings, and commanded Judah to serve the LORD God of Israel.
Then he restored the altar of the LORD and sacrificed peace offerings and
thank offerings on it, and he told Judah to serve the LORD, the God of Israel.
Now in the
eighteenth year of his reign, when he had
purged the land, and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder, to
repair the house of the LORD his God.
Now in the
eighteenth year of his reign, in order to
cleanse the land and the temple,
Josiah sent Shaphan son of Azaliah, Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah son of Joahaz, the recorder, to
repair the house of the LORD his God.
And they put it in the hand of the workmen that had the oversight of the house of the LORD, and they gave it to the workmen that wrought in the house of the LORD, to
repair and
amend the house:
They put it into the hands of the supervisors of those doing the work of the house of the LORD, who in turn gave it to the workmen restoring and repairing the house of the LORD.
And Shaphan carried the book to the king, and brought the king word back again, saying, All that was committed to thy servants, they do it.
Then Shaphan brought the book to the king and reported, “Your servants are doing all that has been placed in their hands.
But
Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.
But
Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the other heads of the families of Israel
replied, “You have no part with us in building a house for our God, since we alone must build it for the LORD, the God of Israel, as Cyrus king of Persia has commanded us.”
Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the
rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.
Let it be known to the king that the Jews who came from you to us have returned to Jerusalem. And they are rebuilding that
rebellious and wicked city, restoring its walls, and
repairing its foundations.
Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the
scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.
Then the king sent this
reply: To Rehum the commander, Shimshai the
scribe, and the rest of your associates living in Samaria and elsewhere in the region west of the Euphrates: Greetings.
But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, that they could not cause them to cease, till the matter came to
Darius: and then they returned answer by letter concerning this matter.
But the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews, so that they were not stopped until a
report was sent to
Darius and written instructions about this matter were returned.
They sent a letter unto him, wherein was written thus; Unto
Darius the king, all peace.
The
report they sent him read as follows: To King
Darius: All peace.
And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my
mantle, and
plucked off the hair of my head and of my
beard, and sat down
astonied.
For we were
bondmen; yet our God hath not
forsaken us in our
bondage, but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a
reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to
repair the desolations thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.
Though we are slaves, our God has not
forsaken us in our
bondage, but He has extended to us grace in the sight of the kings of Persia, giving us new life to rebuild the house of our God and
repair its ruins, and giving us a wall of protection in Judah and Jerusalem.
Let now our rulers of all the congregation stand, and let all them which have taken strange wives in our cities come at appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the fierce wrath of our God for this matter be turned from us.
Let our leaders
represent the whole assembly. Then let
everyone in our towns who has married a foreign woman come at an appointed time, together with the elders and judges of each town, until the fierce anger of our God in this matter is turned away from us.”
And the children of the captivity did so. And
Ezra the priest, with certain chief of the fathers, after the house of their fathers, and all of them by their names, were separated, and sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.
So the exiles did as proposed.
Ezra the priest selected men who were family heads, each of them identified by name, to
represent their families. On the first day of the tenth month they
launched the investigation,
And they said unto me, The
remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great
affliction and
reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.
And they told me, “The
remnant who survived the exile are there in the province, in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates are burned with fire.”
And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be
sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’
sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?
and
replied to the king, “May the king live
forever! Why should I not be
sad when the city where my fathers are buried lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?”
Then the king said unto me, For what
dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.
“What is your request?” replied the king. So I prayed to the God of heaven
