And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night. And He made the stars as well.
And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every
creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness, to
rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the
livestock, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it.”
And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and
replenish the earth, and
subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and
subdue it;
rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth.”

rule over you.”
If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.”
And as for
Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he
beget, and I will make him a great nation.
As for
Ishmael, I have heard you, and I will surely
bless him; I will make him fruitful and multiply him greatly. He will become the father of twelve
rulers, and I will make him into a great nation.
And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that
ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my

And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they
hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.
“Do you intend to reign over us?” his brothers asked. “Will you actually
rule us?” So they
hated him even more because of his dream and his statements.

You shall be in charge of my house, and all my people are to obey your commands. Only with regard to the throne will I be greater than you.”
And he made him to
ride in the second
chariot which he had; and they
cried before him, Bow the
knee: and he made him
ruler over all the land of Egypt.

knee!” So he placed him over all the land of Egypt.

And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the
ruler of his house, Bring these men home, and

dine with me at
noon.”
So now it was not you that sent me
hither, but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a
ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.
Therefore it was not you who sent me here, but God, who has made me a father to Pharaoh—lord of all his household and ruler over all the land of Egypt.
And told him, saying, Joseph is yet alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt. And Jacob’s heart

stunned, for he did not believe them.

Goshen let them dwell: and if thou knowest any men of activity among them, then make them

planning to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and thought, “This thing I have done has surely become known.”

Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth,
hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be
rulers of thousands, and
rulers of hundreds,
rulers of
fifties, and
rulers of tens:
And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people,
rulers of thousands,
rulers of hundreds,
rulers of
fifties, and
rulers of tens.
So Moses chose capable men from all Israel and made them heads over the people as leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of
fifties, and of tens.
Whether he have
gored a son, or have
gored a daughter, according to this judgment shall it be done unto him.

revile the gods, nor
curse the
ruler of thy people.

When a
ruler hath
sinned, and done somewhat through ignorance against any of the commandments of the LORD his God concerning things which should not be done, and is guilty;
When a leader sins
unintentionally and does what is prohibited by any of the commandments of the LORD his God, he incurs guilt.
Thou shalt not rule over him with rigour; but shalt fear thy God.
You are not to rule over them harshly, but you shall fear your God.
And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to
inherit them for a possession; they shall be your
bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel, ye shall not
rule one over another with rigour.
You may leave them to your sons after you to
inherit as property; you can make them slaves for life. But as for your brothers, the Israelites, no man may
rule harshly over his brother.
And as a yearly
hired servant shall he be with him: and the other shall not
rule with rigour over him in thy sight.
He shall be treated like a man
hired from year to year, but a foreign owner must not
rule over him harshly in your sight.
And I will set my face against you, and ye shall be slain before your enemies: they that
hate you shall reign over you; and ye shall
flee when none pursueth you.
And I will set My face against you, so that you will be defeated by your enemies. Those who
hate you will
rule over you, and you will
flee when no one pursues you.
Send thou men, that they may search the land of
Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a
ruler among them.
“Send out for
yourself men to
spy out the land of
Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. From each of their fathers’ tribes send one man who is a leader among them.”
Is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land that floweth with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, except thou make
thyself altogether a prince over us?
Is it not enough that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness? Must you also
appoint yourself as
ruler over us?
For there is a fire gone out of
Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon: it hath consumed Ar of Moab, and the lords of the high places of
Arnon.
For a fire went out from
Heshbon, a
blaze from the city of Sihon. It consumed Ar of Moab, the
rulers of
Arnon’s heights.

A ruler will come from Jacob and destroy the survivors of the city.”
Take you wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you.
Choose for
yourselves wise, understanding, and respected men from each of your tribes, and I will
appoint them as your leaders.”
For the LORD thy God blesseth thee, as he promised thee: and thou shalt
lend unto many nations, but thou shalt not
borrow; and thou shalt reign over many nations, but they shall not reign over thee.
When the LORD your God blesses you as He has promised, you will
lend to many nations but
borrow from none; you will
rule over many nations but be
ruled by none.
And he provided the first part for himself, because there, in a portion of the
lawgiver, was he seated; and he came with the heads of the people, he executed the justice of the LORD, and his judgments with Israel.
He chose the best land for himself, because a ruler’s portion was reserved for him there. He came with the leaders of the people; he administered the LORD’s justice and His ordinances for Israel.”
Sihon king of the
Amorites, who dwelt in
Heshbon, and
ruled from Aroer, which is upon the bank of the river
Arnon, and from the middle of the river, and from half
Gilead, even unto the river
Jabbok, which is the border of the children of
Ammon;
And reigned in mount
Hermon, and in Salcah, and in all
Bashan, unto the border of the Geshurites and the Maachathites, and half
Gilead, the border of Sihon king of
Heshbon.
He
ruled over Mount
Hermon, Salecah, all of
Bashan up to the border of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and half of
Gilead to the border of Sihon king of
Heshbon.
From Sihor, which is before Egypt, even unto the borders of
Ekron northward, which is counted to the
Canaanite: five lords of the Philistines; the Gazathites, and the Ashdothites, the Eshkalonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also the Avites:
All the territory of the Philistines and the Geshurites, from the Shihor east of Egypt to the territory of
Ekron on the north (considered to be
Canaanite territory)—that of the five
Philistine rulers of
Gaza,
Ashdod, Ashkelon,
Gath, and
Ekron, as well as that of the Avvites;
Then the men of Israel said unto
Gideon,
Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of
Midian.
Then the Israelites said to
Gideon, “
Rule over us—you and your son and grandson—for you have saved us from the hand of
Midian.”
And
Gideon said unto them, I will not
rule over you, neither shall my son
rule over you: the LORD shall
rule over you.
But
Gideon replied, “I will not
rule over you, nor will my son. The LORD shall
rule over you.”
Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of
Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are
threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.
“Please ask all the leaders of
Shechem, ‘Is it better for you that seventy men, all the sons of Jerubbaal,
rule over you, or just one man?’ Remember that I am your own flesh and blood.”

ruled in
Heshbon, and said to him, ‘Please let us pass through your land into our own place.’

Then three thousand men of Judah went to the top of the rock Etam, and said to
Samson, Knowest thou not that the Philistines are
rulers over us? what is this that thou hast done unto us? And he said unto them, As they did unto me, so have I done unto them.
In
response, three thousand men of Judah went to the cave at the rock of Etam, and they asked
Samson, “Do you not
realize that the Philistines
rule over us? What have you done to us?” “I have done to them what they did to me,” he replied.
Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt careless, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and there was no magistrate in the land, that might put them to shame in any thing; and they were far from the Zidonians, and had no business with any man.
So the five men departed and came to Laish, where they saw that the people were living securely, like the Sidonians,
tranquil and
unsuspecting. There was nothing lacking in the land and no
oppressive ruler. And they were far away from the Sidonians and had no alliance with
anyone.
Now it came to pass in the days when the judges
ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehemjudah went to

They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto
Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither.
So they called together all the
rulers of the Philistines and asked, “What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?” “It must be moved to
Gath,” they replied. So they carried away the ark of the God of Israel.
So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it
slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.
Then the Ekronites assembled all the
rulers of the Philistines and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel. It must return to its place, so that it will not kill us and our people!” For a deadly confusion had

trespass offering which we shall return to him? They answered, Five golden
emerods, and five golden

And the
kine took the straight way to the way of Beth-shemesh, and went along the
highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Beth-shemesh.
And the cows headed straight up the road toward Beth-shemesh, staying on that one
highway and lowing as they went, never
straying to the right or to the left. The
rulers of the Philistines followed behind them to the border of Beth-shemesh.
And when the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to
Ekron the same day.
And when the five
rulers of the Philistines saw this, they returned to
Ekron that same day.
And the golden
mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of
fenced cities, and of country villages, even unto the great stone of
Abel,
whereon they set down the ark of the LORD: which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua, the Beth-
shemite.
The number of gold rats also corresponded to the number of
Philistine cities belonging to the five
rulers—the fortified cities and their outlying villages. And the large rock on which they placed the ark of the LORD stands to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth-shemesh.
And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.

rulers marched up toward Israel. And when the Israelites learned of this, they feared the Philistines
And when Samuel saw Saul, the LORD said unto him, Behold the man whom I spake to thee of! this same shall reign over my people.
When Samuel saw Saul, the LORD told him, “Here is the man of whom I spoke; he shall rule over My people.”
Then Samuel took a
vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and
kissed him, and said, Is it not because the LORD hath
anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?
Then Samuel took a
flask of oil, poured it on Saul’s head,
kissed him, and said, “Has not the LORD
anointed you
ruler over His inheritance?
And when ye saw that Nahash the king of the children of
Ammon came against you, ye said unto me,
Nay; but a king shall reign over us: when the LORD your God was your king.
But when you saw that Nahash king of the
Ammonites was moving against you, you said to me, ‘No, we must have a king to
rule over us’—even though the LORD your God was your king.
But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.
But now your kingdom will not
endure; the LORD has sought a man after His own heart and appointed him
ruler over His people, because you have not kept the command of the LORD.”
And it shall come to pass, when the LORD shall have done to my lord according to all the good that he hath spoken concerning thee, and shall have appointed thee ruler over Israel;
When the LORD has done for my lord all the good He promised, and when He has appointed you ruler over Israel,
And
Abner said unto David, I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel unto my lord the king, that they may make a league with thee, and that thou mayest reign over all that thine heart desireth. And David sent
Abner away; and he went in peace.
Then
Abner said to David, “Let me go at once, and I will gather all Israel to my lord the king, that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may
rule over all that your heart desires.” So David dismissed
Abner, and he went in peace.
Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, thou
wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captain over Israel.
Even in times past, while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel out and brought them back. And to you the LORD said, ‘You will
shepherd My people Israel, and you will be
ruler over them.’”
And David said unto Michal, It was before the LORD, which chose me before thy father, and before all his house, to
appoint me
ruler over the people of the LORD, over Israel: therefore will I play before the LORD.
But David said to Michal, “I was dancing before the LORD, who chose me over your father and all his house when He appointed me
ruler over the LORD’s people Israel. I will
celebrate before the LORD,
Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the
sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be
ruler over my people, over Israel:
Now then, you are to tell My servant David that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to be the ruler over My people Israel.
And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over both the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David’s sons were chief rulers.

And Ira also the Jairite was a chief ruler about David.
and Ira the Jairite was David’s priest.
The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.
The God of Israel spoke; the Rock of Israel said to me, ‘He who rules the people with justice, who rules in the fear of God,
Then ye shall come up after him, that he may come and sit upon my throne; for he shall be king in my
stead: and I have appointed him to be
ruler over Israel and over Judah.
Then you shall go up with him, and he is to come and sit on my throne and reign in my place. For I have appointed him ruler over Israel and Judah.”
So king Solomon was king over all Israel.
So King Solomon ruled over Israel,
Beside the chief of Solomon’s officers which were over the work, three thousand and three hundred, which ruled over the people that wrought in the work.
But of the children of Israel did Solomon make no
bondmen: but they were men of war, and his servants, and his princes, and his captains, and
rulers of his
chariots, and his
horsemen.
But Solomon did not
consign any of the Israelites to slavery, because they were his men of war, his servants, his officers, his captains, and the commanders of his
chariots and cavalry.
These were the chief of the officers that were over Solomon’s work, five hundred and fifty, which bare rule over the people that wrought in the work.
They were also the chief officers over Solomon’s projects: 550 supervisors over the people who did the work.

adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon, beside the mischief that
Hadad did: and he
abhorred Israel, and reigned over Syria.

Hadad. So Rezon
ruled over
Aram with hostility toward Israel.
And the man
Jeroboam was a mighty man of valour: and Solomon seeing the young man that he was
industrious, he made him
ruler over all the charge of the house of Joseph.
Now
Jeroboam was a mighty man of
valor. So when Solomon noticed that the young man was
industrious, he put him in charge of the whole labor force of the house of Joseph.
Howbeit I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand: but I will make him prince all the days of his life for David my servant’s sake, whom I chose, because he kept my commandments and my statutes:
Nevertheless, I will not take the whole kingdom out of Solomon’s hand, because I have made him ruler all the days of his life for the sake of David My servant, whom I chose because he kept My commandments and statutes.
Go, tell
Jeroboam, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel,
Forasmuch as I
exalted thee from among the people, and made thee prince over my people Israel,
Go, tell
Jeroboam that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I raised you up from among the people and appointed you
ruler over My people Israel.
Forasmuch as I
exalted thee out of the dust, and made thee prince over my people Israel; and thou hast walked in the way of
Jeroboam, and hast made my people Israel to sin, to
provoke me to anger with their sins;
“Even though I lifted you out of the dust and made you
ruler over My people Israel, you have walked in the way of
Jeroboam and have caused My people Israel to sin and to
provoke Me to anger by their sins.
But the king of Syria commanded his thirty and two captains that had
rule over his
chariots, saying, Fight neither with small nor great, save only with the king of Israel.

anyone, small or great, except the king of Israel.”
And
Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. And
Jehu wrote letters, and sent to Samaria, unto the
rulers of
Jezreel, to the elders, and to them that brought up
Ahab’s children, saying,
Now

Jehu wrote letters and sent them to Samaria to the officials of
Jezreel, to the elders, and to the guardians of the sons of
Ahab, saying:

hid in the house of the LORD six years. And
Athaliah did reign over the land.
And
Joash remained hidden with his
nurse in the house of the LORD for six years while
Athaliah ruled the land.
And the seventh year Jehoiada sent and
fetched the
rulers over hundreds, with the captains and the guard, and brought them to him into the house of the LORD, and made a covenant with them, and took an oath of them in the house of the LORD, and shewed them the king’s son.
Then in the seventh year, Jehoiada sent for the commanders of hundreds, the Carites, and the guards, and had them brought into the house of the LORD. There he made a covenant with them and put them under oath. He showed them the king’s son
And he took the rulers over hundreds, and the captains, and the guard, and all the people of the land; and they brought down the king from the house of the LORD, and came by the way of the gate of the guard to the king’s house. And he sat on the throne of the kings.
He took with him the commanders of hundreds, the Carites, the guards, and all the people of the land, and they brought the king down from the house of the LORD and entered the royal palace by way of the Gate of the Guards. Then
Joash took his seat on the royal throne,
And as for the people that remained in the land of Judah, whom
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had left, even over them he made Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam, the son of Shaphan,
ruler.
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon appointed Gedaliah son of
Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, over the people he had left behind in the land of Judah.
And Jokim, and the men of Chozeba, and
Joash, and Saraph, who had the dominion in Moab, and Jashubi-lehem. And these are ancient things.
Er the father of Lecah, Laadah the father of Mareshah and the clans of the linen workers at Beth-ashbea, Jokim, the men of Cozeba, and
Joash and Saraph, who
ruled in Moab and Jashubi-lehem. (These names are from ancient records.)
For Judah prevailed above his brethren, and of him came the chief
ruler; but the
birthright was Joseph’s:)
And though Judah prevailed over his brothers and a
ruler came from him, the
birthright belonged to Joseph.
And
Azariah the son of Hilkiah, the son of Meshullam, the son of
Zadok, the son of Meraioth, the son of Ahitub, the
ruler of the house of God;
Azariah son of Hilkiah, the son of Meshullam, the son of
Zadok, the son of Meraioth, the son of Ahitub, the chief official of God’s temple;
And
Phinehas the son of
Eleazar was the
ruler over them in time past, and the Lord was with him.
In earlier times
Phinehas son of
Eleazar had been in charge of the gatekeepers, and the LORD was with him.
And moreover in time past, even when Saul was king, thou
wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD thy God said unto thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be
ruler over my people Israel, and thou shalt be
ruler over my people Israel.
Even in times past, while Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel out and brought them back. And the LORD your God said, ‘You will
shepherd My people Israel, and you will be
ruler over them.’”
And there fell some of
Manasseh to David, when he came with the Philistines against Saul to battle: but they helped them not: for the lords of the Philistines upon
advisement sent him away, saying, He will fall to his master Saul to the
jeopardy of our heads.
Some from
Manasseh defected to David when he went with the Philistines to fight against Saul. (They did not help the Philistines because the
Philistine rulers consulted and sent David away, saying, “It will cost us our heads if he defects to his master Saul.”)
Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the
sheepcote, even from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be
ruler over my people Israel:
Now then, you are to tell My servant David that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to be the ruler over My people Israel.
And David said to
Joab and to the
rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beer-
sheba even to
Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.
So David said to
Joab and the commanders of the troops, “Go and count the Israelites from
Beersheba to
Dan and bring me a report, so that I may know their number.”
Also unto Shemaiah his son were sons born, that ruled throughout the house of their father: for they were mighty men of valour.
Also to his son Shemaiah were born sons who ruled over their families because they were strong, capable men.

Howbeit the LORD God of Israel chose me before all the house of my father to be king over Israel for ever: for he hath chosen Judah to be the
ruler; and of the house of Judah, the house of my father; and among the sons of my father he liked me to make me king over all Israel:
Yet the LORD, the God of Israel, chose me out of all my father’s house to be king over Israel
forever. For He chose Judah as leader, and from the house of Judah He chose my father’s household, and from my father’s sons He was pleased to make me king over all Israel.
