(Now the
Amalekites and the
Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) To
morrow turn you, and get you into the wilderness by the way of the Red
sea.
Now since the
Amalekites and
Canaanites are living in the valleys, turn back
tomorrow and head for the wilderness along the route to the Red
Sea.”
After the number of the days in which ye
searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your
iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.
In keeping with the forty days you
spied out the land, you shall bear your guilt forty years—a year for each day—and you will experience My
alienation.
And the men, which Moses sent to
search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to
murmur against him, by bringing up a
slander upon the land,
So the men Moses had sent to
spy out the land, who had returned and made the whole congregation
grumble against him by bringing out a bad report about the land—
But Joshua the son of
Nun, and
Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to
search the land, lived still.
Of those men who had gone to
spy out the land, only Joshua son of
Nun and
Caleb son of Jephunneh remained alive.
And they journeyed from mount
Hor by the way of the Red
sea, to compass the land of
Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.
Then they set out from Mount
Hor along the route to the Red
Sea, in order to bypass the land of
Edom. But the people grew impatient on the journey
Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the LORD, What he did in the Red
sea, and in the
brooks of
Arnon,
Therefore it is stated in the Book of the Wars of the LORD: “Waheb in Suphah and the wadis of the
Arnon,
Command the children of Israel, and say unto them, My offering, and my bread for my sacrifices made by fire, for a sweet savour unto me, shall ye observe to offer unto me in their due season.
“Command the Israelites and say to them: See that you present to Me at its appointed time the food for My offerings by fire, as a pleasing
aroma to Me.
And they departed from before
Pi-hahiroth, and passed through the midst of the
sea into the wilderness, and went three days’ journey in the wilderness of Etham, and pitched in
Marah.
They set out from
Pi-hahiroth and crossed through the
sea, into the wilderness, and they journeyed three days into the Wilderness of Etham and camped at
Marah.
And they removed from Elim, and
encamped by the Red
sea.
They set out from Elim and camped by the Red Sea.
And they removed from the Red
sea, and
encamped in the wilderness of Sin.
They set out from the Red Sea and camped in the Desert of Sin.
Then your south quarter shall be from the wilderness of Zin along by the coast of
Edom, and your south border shall be the outmost coast of the salt
sea eastward:
Your southern border will extend from the Wilderness of Zin along the border of
Edom. On the east, your southern border will run from the end of the Salt
Sea,
And the border shall
fetch a compass from Azmon unto the river of Egypt, and the goings out of it shall be at the
sea.
where it will turn from Azmon, join the
Brook of Egypt, and end at the
Sea.
And as for the western border, ye shall even have the great sea for a border: this shall be your west border.
Your western border will be the coastline of the Great Sea; this will be your boundary on the west.
And this shall be your north border: from the great
sea ye shall point out for you mount
Hor:
Your northern border will run from the Great
Sea directly to Mount
Hor,
And the coast shall go down from Shepham to Riblah, on the east side of
Ain; and the border shall descend, and shall reach unto the side of the
sea of Chinnereth eastward:
then go down from Shepham to Riblah on the east side of
Ain and continue along the slopes east of the
Sea of Chinnereth.
And the border shall go down to Jordan, and the goings out of it shall be at the salt sea: this shall be your land with the coasts thereof round about.
Then the border will go down along the Jordan and end at the Salt Sea. This will be your land, defined by its borders on all sides.”
These be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this side Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red
sea, between
Paran, and Tophel, and
Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab.
These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel in the wilderness east of the Jordan—in the Arabah opposite Suph—between
Paran and Tophel,
Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab.
Turn you, and take your journey, and go to the mount of the
Amorites, and unto all the places
nigh thereunto, in the plain, in the hills, and in the
vale, and in the south, and by the
sea side, to the land of the
Canaanites, and unto
Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Euphrates.
Resume your journey and go to the hill country of the
Amorites; go to all the
neighboring peoples in the Arabah, in the hill country, in the foothills, in the Negev, and along the
seacoast to the land of the
Canaanites and to
Lebanon, as far as the great River Euphrates.
And ye came near unto me every one of you, and said, We will send men before us, and they shall search us out the land, and bring us word again by what way we must go up, and into what cities we shall come.
Then all of you approached me and said, “Let us send men
ahead of us to
search out the land and bring us word of what route to follow and which cities to enter.”
And they turned and went up into the mountain, and came unto the valley of
Eshcol, and
searched it out.
They left and went up into the hill country, and came to the Valley of
Eshcol and
spied out the land.
Who went in the way before you, to
search you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to
shew you by what way ye should go, and in a cloud by day.
who went before you on the journey, in the fire by night and in the cloud by day, to seek out a place for you to camp and to show you the road to travel.
But as for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.
But you are to turn back and head for the wilderness along the route to the Red Sea.”
Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red
sea, as the LORD spake unto me: and we compassed mount
Seir many days.
Then we turned back and headed for the wilderness by way of the Red
Sea, as the LORD had
instructed me, and for many days we
wandered around Mount
Seir.
The plain also, and Jordan, and the coast thereof, from Chinnereth even unto the
sea of the plain, even the salt
sea, under Ashdoth-
pisgah eastward.
The Jordan River in the Arabah bordered it from Chinnereth to the
Sea of the Arabah (the Salt
Sea) with the slopes of
Pisgah to the east.
And all the plain on this side Jordan eastward, even unto the
sea of the plain, under the springs of
Pisgah.
including all the Arabah on the east side of the Jordan and as far as the
Sea of the Arabah, below the slopes of
Pisgah.
And what he did unto the army of Egypt, unto their horses, and to their
chariots; how he made the water of the Red
sea to overflow them as they pursued after you, and how the LORD hath destroyed them unto this day;
what He did to the Egyptian army and horses and
chariots when He made the waters of the Red
Sea engulf them as they pursued you, and how He destroyed them completely, even to this day;
That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil.
then I will provide rain for your land in season, the autumn and spring rains, that you may gather your grain, new wine, and oil.
Every place
whereon the soles of your feet shall
tread shall be yours: from the wilderness and
Lebanon, from the river, the river Euphrates, even unto the
uttermost sea shall your coast be.
Every place where the sole of your foot treads will be yours. Your territory will extend from the wilderness to
Lebanon, and from the Euphrates River to the Western
Sea.
Then shalt thou
enquire, and make
search, and ask
diligently; and, behold, if it be truth, and the thing certain, that such
abomination is wrought among you;
But at the place which the LORD thy God shall choose to place his name in, there thou shalt sacrifice the
passover at even, at the going down of the sun, at the
season that thou camest forth out of Egypt.
You must only offer the
Passover sacrifice at the place the LORD your God will choose as a dwelling for His Name. Do this in the evening as the sun sets, at the same time you departed from Egypt.
And it shall be, when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests the Levites:
When he is
seated on his royal throne, he must write for himself a copy of this instruction on a
scroll in the presence of the
Levitical priests.
The LORD shall open unto thee his good
treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his
season, and to
bless all the work of thine hand: and thou shalt
lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not
borrow.
The LORD will open the heavens, His abundant
storehouse, to send rain on your land in
season and to
bless all the work of your hands. You will
lend to many nations, but
borrow from none.
Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?
And it is not beyond the
sea, that you should need to ask, ‘Who will cross the
sea to get it for us and
proclaim it, that we may obey it?’
Is not this laid up in store with me, and sealed up among my treasures?
“Have I not stored up these things, sealed up within My vaults?
And for the precious fruits brought forth by the sun, and for the precious things put forth by the moon,
with the
bountiful harvest from the sun and the abundant yield of the
seasons,
They shall call the people unto the mountain; there they shall offer sacrifices of righteousness: for they shall
suck of the abundance of the
seas, and of treasures
hid in the sand.
They will call the peoples to a mountain; there they will offer sacrifices of righteousness. For they will feast on the abundance of the seas and the hidden treasures of the sand.”
And he provided the first part for himself, because there, in a portion of the
lawgiver, was he
seated; and he came with the heads of the people, he executed the justice of the LORD, and his judgments with Israel.
He chose the best land for himself, because a ruler’s portion was reserved for him there. He came with the leaders of the people; he administered the LORD’s justice and His ordinances for Israel.”
And of
Naphtali he said, O
Naphtali, satisfied with favour, and full with the blessing of the LORD: possess thou the west and the south.
Concerning
Naphtali he said: “
Naphtali is abounding with favor, full of the blessing of the LORD; he shall take possession of the
sea and the south.”
And all
Naphtali, and the land of Ephraim, and
Manasseh, and all the land of Judah, unto the utmost
sea,
all of
Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and
Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Western
Sea,
From the wilderness and this
Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the
Hittites, and unto the great
sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.
Your territory shall extend from the wilderness and
Lebanon to the great River Euphrates—all the land of the
Hittites—and west as far as the Great
Sea.
And it was told the king of
Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in
hither to night of the children of Israel to
search out the country.
And it was reported to the king of
Jericho: “Behold, some men of Israel have come here
tonight to
spy out the land.”
And the king of
Jericho sent unto
Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, which are entered into thine house: for they be come to
search out all the country.
So the king of
Jericho sent to
Rahab and said, “Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, for they have come to
spy out the whole land.”
For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red
sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the
Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and
Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.
For we have heard how the LORD dried up the waters of the Red
Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and
Og, the two kings of the
Amorites across the Jordan, whom you devoted to destruction.
And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not.
So the
spies went out into the hill country and stayed there three days, until their pursuers had returned without finding them, having
searched all along the road.
And as they that bare the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were
dipped in the
brim of the water, (for Jordan overfloweth all his banks all the time of harvest,)
Now the Jordan overflows its banks throughout the harvest season. But as soon as the priests carrying the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water’s edge,
That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an
heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the
sea of the plain, even the salt
sea, failed, and were cut off: and the people passed over right against
Jericho.
the flowing water stood still. It backed up as far
upstream as Adam, a city in the area of Zarethan, while the water flowing toward the
Sea of the Arabah (the Salt
Sea) was completely cut off. So the people crossed over opposite
Jericho.
For the LORD your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were gone over:
For the LORD your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed over, just as He did to the Red Sea, which He dried up before us until we had crossed over.
And it came to pass, when all the kings of the
Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the
Canaanites, which were by the
sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.
Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the
Canaanite kings along the coast heard how the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the Israelites until they had crossed over, their hearts melted and their spirits failed for fear of the Israelites.
And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great
sea over against
Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the
Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;
And they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the
sea shore in multitude, with horses and
chariots very many.
So these kings came out with all their armies, a multitude as numerous as the sand on the
seashore, along with a great number of horses and
chariots.
And from the plain to the
sea of Chinneroth on the east, and unto the
sea of the plain, even the salt
sea on the east, the way to Beth-jeshimoth; and from the south, under Ashdoth-
pisgah:
as well as the Arabah east of the
Sea of Chinnereth to the
Sea of the Arabah (the Salt
Sea), eastward through Beth-jeshimoth, and southward below the slopes of
Pisgah.
And in the valley, Beth-
aram, and Beth-nimrah, and Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of
Heshbon, Jordan and his border, even unto the edge of the
sea of Chinnereth on the other side Jordan eastward.
and in the valley, Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, with the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of
Heshbon (the territory on the east side of the Jordan up to the edge of the
Sea of Chinnereth).
And their south border was from the shore of the salt sea, from the bay that looketh southward:
Their southern border started at the bay on the southern
tip of the Salt
Sea,
From thence it passed toward Azmon, and went out unto the river of Egypt; and the goings out of that coast were at the sea: this shall be your south coast.
It proceeded to Azmon, joined the
Brook of Egypt, and ended at the
Sea. This was their southern border.
And the east border was the salt
sea, even unto the end of Jordan. And their border in the north quarter was from the bay of the
sea at the
uttermost part of Jordan:
The eastern border was the Salt Sea as far as the mouth of the Jordan.
And the border went up to Beth-hogla, and passed along by the north of Beth-arabah; and the border went up to the stone of Bohan the son of
Reuben:
The northern border started from the bay of the
sea at the mouth of the Jordan, went up to Beth-hoglah, proceeded north of Beth-arabah, and went up to the Stone of Bohan son of
Reuben.
And the border went out unto the side of
Ekron northward: and the border was drawn to Shicron, and passed along to mount Baalah, and went out unto Jabneel; and the goings out of the border were at the
sea.
Then it went out to the northern slope of
Ekron, curved toward Shikkeron, proceeded to Mount Baalah, went on to Jabneel, and ended at the
Sea.
And the west border was to the great sea, and the coast thereof. This is the coast of the children of Judah round about according to their families.
And the western border was the coastline of the Great Sea. These are the boundaries around the clans of the descendants of Judah.
From
Ekron even unto the
sea, all that lay near
Ashdod, with their villages:
from
Ekron to the
sea, all the cities near
Ashdod, along with their villages;
Ashdod with her towns and her villages,
Gaza with her towns and her villages, unto the river of Egypt, and the great
sea, and the border thereof:
Ashdod, with its towns and villages;
Gaza, with its towns and villages, as far as the
Brook of Egypt and the coastline of the Great
Sea.
And goeth down westward to the coast of Japhleti, unto the coast of Beth-horon the
nether, and to
Gezer: and the goings out thereof are at the
sea.
Then it descended westward to the border of the Japhletites as far as the border of Lower Beth-horon and on to
Gezer, and it ended at the
Sea.
And the border went out toward the
sea to Michmethah on the north side; and the border went about eastward unto Taanath-
shiloh, and passed by it on the east to Janohah;
and out toward the
Sea. From Michmethath on the north it turned eastward toward Taanath-
shiloh and passed by it to Janoah on the east.
The border went out from Tappuah westward unto the river Kanah; and the goings out thereof were at the sea. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Ephraim by their families.
From Tappuah the border went westward to the
Brook of Kanah and ended at the
Sea. This was the inheritance of the clans of the tribe of Ephraim,
And the coast descended unto the river Kanah, southward of the river: these cities of Ephraim are among the cities of
Manasseh: the coast of
Manasseh also was on the north side of the river, and the outgoings of it were at the
sea:
From there the border continued southward to the
Brook of Kanah. There were cities belonging to Ephraim among the cities of
Manasseh, but the border of
Manasseh was on the north side of the
brook and ended at the
Sea.
Southward it was Ephraim’s, and northward it was
Manasseh’s, and the
sea is his border; and they met together in Asher on the north, and in
Issachar on the east.
Ephraim’s territory was to the south, and
Manasseh’s was to the north, having the
Sea as its border and adjoining Asher on the north and
Issachar on the east.
And the border was drawn thence, and compassed the corner of the
sea southward, from the hill that lieth before Beth-horon southward; and the goings out thereof were at Kirjath-
baal, which is Kirjath-jearim, a city of the children of Judah: this was the west quarter.
On the west side the border curved southward from the hill facing Beth-horon on the south and came out at Kiriath-
baal (that is, Kiriath-jearim), a city of the sons of Judah. This was the western side.
And the border passed along to the side of Beth-hoglah northward: and the outgoings of the border were at the north bay of the salt sea at the south end of Jordan: this was the south coast.
The border continued to the northern slope of Beth-hoglah and came out at the northern bay of the Salt Sea, at the mouth of the Jordan. This was the southern border.
And their border went up toward the sea, and Maralah, and reached to Dabbasheth, and reached to the river that is before Jokneam;
The border of their inheritance stretched as far as Sarid. It went up westward to Maralah, reached Dabbesheth, and met the
brook east of Jokneam.
And then the coast turneth to
Ramah, and to the strong city Tyre; and the coast turneth to Hosah; and the outgoings thereof are at the
sea from the coast to
Achzib:
The border then turned back toward
Ramah as far as the fortified city of Tyre, turned toward Hosah, and came out at the
Sea in the region of
Achzib,
Behold, I have divided unto you by lot these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, even unto the great sea westward.
See, I have
allotted as an inheritance to your tribes these remaining nations, including all the nations I have already cut off, from the Jordan westward to the Great
Sea.
And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye came unto the
sea; and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with
chariots and
horsemen unto the Red
sea.
When I brought your fathers out of Egypt and you reached the Red
Sea, the Egyptians pursued them with
chariots and
horsemen as far as the Red
Sea.
And when they
cried unto the LORD, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the
sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes have seen what I have done in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness a long
season.
So your fathers
cried out to the LORD, and He put darkness between you and the Egyptians, over whom He brought the
sea and
engulfed them. Your very eyes saw what I did to the Egyptians. Then you lived in the wilderness for a long time.
And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.
Then Ehud approached him while he was sitting alone in the coolness of his upper room. “I have a word from God for you,” Ehud said, and the king rose from his seat.
Why abodest thou among the sheepfolds, to hear the bleatings of the flocks? For the divisions of
Reuben there were great
searchings of heart.
Why did you sit among the sheepfolds to hear the
whistling for the flocks? In the clans of
Reuben there was great indecision.
Gilead abode beyond Jordan: and why did
Dan remain in ships? Asher continued on the
sea shore, and abode in his breaches.
Gilead remained beyond the Jordan.
Dan, why did you
linger by the ships? Asher stayed at the coast and remained in his harbors.
And the Midianites and the
Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the
sea side for multitude.
Now the Midianites,
Amalekites, and all the other people of the east had settled in the valley like a
swarm of locusts, and their camels were as countless as the sand on the
seashore.
But when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea, and came to Kadesh;
But when Israel came up out of Egypt, they traveled through the wilderness to the Red Sea and came to Kadesh.
Now there were men lying in wait,
abiding with her in the chamber. And she said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And he
brake the withs, as a thread of
tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. So his strength was not known.
While the men were hidden in her room, she called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” But he
snapped the bowstrings like a
strand of yarn
seared by a flame. So the source of his strength remained unknown.
And the children of
Dan sent of their family five men from their coasts, men of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to
spy out the land, and to
search it; and they said unto them, Go,
search the land: who when they came to mount Ephraim, to the house of
Micah, they
lodged there.
So the Danites sent out five men from their clans, men of
valor from Zorah and Eshtaol, to
spy out the land and
explore it. “Go and
explore the land,” they told them. The men entered the hill country of Ephraim and came to the house of
Micah, where they spent the night.
And I thought to
advertise thee, saying,
Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou
wilt redeem it,
redeem it: but if thou
wilt not
redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to
redeem it beside thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will
redeem it.
I thought I should inform you that you may
buy it back in the presence of those
seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you want to
redeem it, do so. But if you will not
redeem it, tell me so I may know, because there is no one but you to
redeem it, and I am next after you.” “I will
redeem it,” he replied.
So
Hannah rose up after they had eaten in
Shiloh, and after they had
drunk. Now
Eli the priest sat upon a
seat by a post of the temple of the LORD.
So after they had finished eating and drinking in
Shiloh,
Hannah stood up. Now
Eli the priest was sitting on a chair by the
doorpost of the temple of the LORD.
He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the
beggar from the
dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them
inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD’S, and he hath set the world upon them.
He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the
needy from the ash
heap. He
seats them among princes and bestows on them a throne of honor. For the foundations of the earth are the LORD’s, and upon them He has set the world.
And when he came, lo,
Eli sat upon a
seat by the
wayside watching: for his heart
trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city
cried out.
When he arrived, there was
Eli, sitting on his chair beside the road and watching, because his heart
trembled for the ark of God. When the man entered the city to give a report, the whole city
cried out.
And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the
seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck
brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.
As soon as the ark of God was mentioned,
Eli fell backward from his chair by the city gate, and being old and heavy, he broke his neck and died. And
Eli had judged Israel forty years.
And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the parlour, and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were
bidden, which were about thirty persons.
Then Samuel took Saul and his servant, brought them into the hall, and seated them in the place of honor among those who were invited—about thirty in all.
And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand
chariots, and six thousand
horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the
sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in
Michmash, eastward from Beth-
aven.
Now the Philistines assembled to fight against Israel with three thousand
chariots, six thousand
horsemen, and troops as numerous as the sand on the
seashore. They went up and camped at
Michmash, east of Beth-
aven.
Then
Jonathan said to David, To
morrow is the new moon: and thou shalt be missed, because thy
seat will be empty.
Then
Jonathan said to David, “
Tomorrow is the New Moon, and you will be missed if your
seat is empty.
And the king sat upon his
seat, as at other times, even upon a
seat by the wall: and
Jonathan arose, and
Abner sat by Saul’s side, and David’s place was empty.
He sat in his usual place by the wall, opposite
Jonathan and beside
Abner, but David’s place was empty.
And David abode in the wilderness in strong holds, and remained in a mountain in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God delivered him not into his hand.
And David stayed in the wilderness strongholds and in the hill country of the Wilderness of Ziph. Day after day Saul searched for him, but God would not deliver David into his hand.
See therefore, and take knowledge of all the
lurking places where he hideth himself, and come ye again to me with the certainty, and I will go with you: and it shall come to pass, if he be in the land, that I will
search him out throughout all the thousands of Judah.
Observe and find out all the places where he hides. Then come back to me with certainty, and I will go with you. If he is in the land, I will search him out among all the clans of Judah.”
Then
Abigail made
haste, and took two hundred
loaves, and two bottles of wine, and five sheep ready dressed, and five measures of
parched corn, and an hundred clusters of
raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on
asses.
Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.
So Saul, accompanied by three thousand chosen men of Israel, went down to the Wilderness of Ziph to search for David there.
And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall
despair of me, to seek me any more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand.
David, however, said to himself, “One of these days now I will be swept away by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than to escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will stop searching for me all over Israel, and I will slip out of his hand.”
And it was told Saul that David was fled to
Gath: and he sought no more again for him.
And when Saul learned that David had fled to
Gath, he no longer
searched for him.
But when the Philistines heard that they had
anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the hold.
When the Philistines heard that David had been
anointed king over Israel, they all went in
search of him; but David learned of this and went down to the
stronghold.
And the princes of the children of
Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David
doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David rather sent his servants unto thee, to
search the city, and to
spy it out, and to overthrow it?
the princes of the
Ammonites said to Hanun their lord, “Just because David has sent you comforters, do you really believe he is showing respect for your father? Has not David instead sent his servants to
explore the city,
spy it out, and overthrow it?”
Therefore I counsel that all Israel be generally gathered unto thee, from
Dan even to Beer-
sheba, as the sand that is by the
sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person.
And when
Absalom’s servants came to the woman to the house, they said, Where is
Ahimaaz and
Jonathan? And the woman said unto them, They be gone over the
brook of water. And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem.
When
Absalom’s servants came to the woman at the house, they asked, “Where are
Ahimaaz and
Jonathan?” “They have crossed over the
brook,” she replied. The men
searched but did not find them, so they returned to Jerusalem.
And the channels of the
sea appeared, the foundations of the world were discovered, at the
rebuking of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils.
The channels of the
sea appeared, and the foundations of the world were exposed at the
rebuke of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of His nostrils.
These be the names of the mighty men whom David had: The Tachmonite that sat in the
seat, chief among the captains; the same was Adino the Eznite: he lift up his
spear against eight hundred, whom he
slew at one time.
These are the names of David’s mighty men: Josheb-basshebeth the Tahchemonite was chief of the Three. He
wielded his
spear against eight hundred men, whom he killed at one time.
