And he said,
Cursed be
Canaan; a
servant of
servants shall he be unto his brethren.
he said, “
Cursed be
Canaan! A
servant of
servants shall he be to his brothers.”
And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of
Shem; and
Canaan shall be his
servant.
He also declared: “Blessed be the LORD, the God of
Shem! May
Canaan be the
servant of
Shem.
And when
Abram heard that his brother was taken
captive, he armed his trained
servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto
Dan.
And when
Abram heard that his relative had been captured, he
mobilized the 318 trained men born in his household, and they set out in pursuit as far as
Dan.
And he divided himself against them, he and his
servants, by night, and
smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.
During the night,
Abram divided his forces and routed
Chedorlaomer’s army, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.
And
Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.
Abram continued, “Behold, You have given me no offspring, so a
servant in my household will be my heir.”
And Sarai said unto
Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my
maid into thy
bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was
despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.
Then Sarai said to
Abram, “May the wrong done to me be upon you! I delivered my
servant into your arms, and ever since she saw that she was
pregnant, she has treated me with contempt. May the LORD judge between you and me.”
But
Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy
maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.
“Here,” said
Abram, “your
servant is in your hands. Do whatever you want with her.” Then Sarai treated
Hagar so harshly that she fled from her.
“
Hagar,
servant of Sarai,” he said, “where have you come from, and where are you going?” “I am running away from my
mistress Sarai,” she replied.
And all the men of his house, born in the house, and bought with money of the stranger, were
circumcised with him.
And all the men of Abraham’s household—both
servants born in his household and those purchased from foreigners—were
circumcised with him.
And said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:
“My lord,” said Abraham, “if I have found favor in your sight, please do not pass your servant by.
And I will
fetch a
morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that ye shall pass on: for therefore are ye come to your
servant. And they said, So do, as thou hast said.
And I will bring a
bit of bread so that you may refresh
yourselves. This is why you have passed your
servant’s way. After that, you may continue on your way.” “
Yes,” they replied, “you may do as you have said.”
And Abraham ran unto the
herd, and fetcht a
calf tender and good, and gave it unto a young man; and he hasted to dress it.
Meanwhile, Abraham ran to the
herd, selected a tender and choice
calf, and gave it to a
servant, who
hurried to prepare it.
And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your
servant’s house, and
tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said,
Nay; but we will
abide in the street all night.
and said, “My lords, please turn aside into the house of your
servant; wash your feet and
spend the night. Then you can rise early and go on your way.” “No,” they answered, “we will
spend the night in the square.”
Behold now, thy
servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast
magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die:
Your
servant has indeed found favor in your sight, and you have shown me great kindness by
sparing my life. But I cannot run to the mountains; the
disaster will overtake me, and I will die.
Therefore
Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his
servants, and told all these things in their ears: and the men were
sore afraid.
Early the next morning
Abimelech got up and summoned all his
servants; and when he described to them all that had happened, the men were
terrified.
And Abraham reproved
Abimelech because of a well of water, which
Abimelech’s
servants had violently taken away.
And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and
saddled his
ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and
clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
So Abraham got up early the next morning,
saddled his
donkey, and took along two of his
servants and his son Isaac. He split the wood for a burnt offering and set out for the place God had designated.
And Abraham said unto his young men,
Abide ye here with the
ass; and I and the
lad will go
yonder and worship, and come again to you,
“Stay here with the
donkey,” Abraham told his
servants. “The boy and I will go over there to worship, and then we will return to you.”
So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beer-
sheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beer-
sheba.
Abraham went back to his
servants, and they got up and set out together for
Beersheba. And Abraham settled in
Beersheba.
And Abraham said unto his eldest
servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my
thigh:
So Abraham
instructed the chief
servant of his household, who managed all he owned, “Place your hand under my
thigh,
And the
servant said unto him,
Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest?
The servant asked him, “What if the woman is unwilling to follow me to this land? Shall I then take your son back to the land from which you came?”
And the
servant put his hand under the
thigh of Abraham his master, and
sware to him concerning that matter.
So the
servant placed his hand under the
thigh of his master Abraham and
swore an oath to him concerning this matter.
And the
servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed; for all the goods of his master were in his hand: and he arose, and went to
Mesopotamia, unto the city of
Nahor.
Then the
servant took ten of his master’s camels and departed with all manner of good things from his master in hand. And he set out for
Nahor’s hometown in
Aram-naharaim.
And let it come to pass, that the
damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy
servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master.
Now may it happen that the
girl to whom I say, ‘Please let down your
jar that I may drink,’ and who responds, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels as well’—let her be the one You have appointed for Your
servant Isaac. By this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master.”
And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold,
Rebekah came out, who was born to
Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of
Nahor, Abraham’s brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder.
Before the
servant had finished praying,
Rebekah came out with her
jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of
Bethuel son of Milcah, the wife of Abraham’s brother
Nahor.
And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher.
So the
servant ran to meet her and said, “Please let me have a little water from your
jar.”
And he said, I am Abraham’s servant.
“I am Abraham’s servant,” he replied.
And it came to pass, that, when Abraham’s servant heard their words, he worshipped the LORD, bowing himself to the earth.
When Abraham’s servant heard their words, he bowed down to the ground before the LORD.
And the
servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and
raiment, and gave them to
Rebekah: he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things.
Then he brought out jewels of silver and gold, and articles of clothing, and he gave them to
Rebekah. He also gave precious gifts to her brother and her mother.
And they sent away
Rebekah their sister, and her
nurse, and Abraham’s
servant, and his men.
So they sent their sister
Rebekah on her way, along with her
nurse and Abraham’s
servant and his men.
And
Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they
rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the
servant took
Rebekah, and went his way.
Then
Rebekah and her
servant girls got ready, mounted the camels, and followed the man. So the
servant took
Rebekah and left.
For she had said unto the
servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the
servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a
vail, and covered herself.
and asked the
servant, “Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?” “It is my master,” the
servant answered. So she took her
veil and covered herself.
And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done.
Then the servant told Isaac all that he had done.
For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of
servants: and the Philistines
envied him.
He owned so many flocks and herds and
servants that the Philistines
envied him.
For all the wells which his father’s
servants had
digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth.
So the Philistines took
dirt and stopped up all the wells that his father’s
servants had
dug in the days of his father Abraham.
And Isaac’s
servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.
Then Isaac’s
servants dug in the valley and found a well of fresh water there.
And the LORD appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will
bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my
servant Abraham’s sake.
and that night the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will
bless you and multiply your descendants for the sake of My
servant Abraham.”
And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the LORD and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac’s
servants digged a well.
So Isaac built an altar there and called on the name of the LORD, and he pitched his tent there. His
servants also
dug a well there.
And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac’s
servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had
digged, and said unto him, We have found water.
On that same day, Isaac’s
servants came and told him about the well they had
dug. “We have found water!” they told him.
And Isaac answered and said unto
Esau, Behold, I have made him thy lord, and all his brethren have I given to him for
servants; and with corn and wine have I sustained him: and what shall I do now unto thee, my son?
But Isaac answered
Esau: “Look, I have made him your master and given him all his relatives as
servants; I have sustained him with grain and new wine. What is left that I can do for you, my son?”
And she gave him
Bilhah her
handmaid to wife: and Jacob went in unto her.
And
Rachel’s
servant Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son.
When Leah saw that she had left bearing, she took Zilpah her
maid, and gave her Jacob to wife.
When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she gave her servant Zilpah to Jacob as a wife.
And Zilpah Leah’s
maid bare Jacob a son.
And Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a son.
And Zilpah Leah’s
maid bare Jacob a second son.
When Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son,
And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord
Esau; Thy
servant Jacob saith thus, I have
sojourned with
Laban, and stayed there until now:
He
instructed them, “You are to say to my master
Esau, ‘Your
servant Jacob says: I have been staying with
Laban and have remained there until now.
I am not worthy of the least of all the
mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy
servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.
I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness You have shown Your servant. Indeed, with only my staff I came across the Jordan, but now I have become two camps.
And he delivered them into the hand of his
servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his
servants, Pass over before me, and put a space
betwixt drove and drove.
He entrusted them to his
servants in separate herds and told them, “Go on
ahead of me, and keep some distance between the herds.”
Then thou shalt say, They be thy
servant Jacob’s; it is a present sent unto my lord
Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.
then you are to say, ‘They belong to your
servant Jacob. They are a gift, sent to my lord
Esau. And behold, Jacob is behind us.’”
And say ye moreover, Behold, thy
servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will
appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face;
peradventure he will accept of me.
You are also to say, ‘Look, your
servant Jacob is right behind us.’” For he thought, “I will
appease Esau with the gift that is going before me. After that I can face him, and perhaps he will accept me.”
And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, Who are those with thee? And he said, The children which God hath
graciously given thy
servant.
When
Esau looked up and saw the women and children, he asked, “Who are these with you?” Jacob answered, “These are the children God has
graciously given your
servant.”
Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his
servant: and I will lead on softly, according as the cattle that goeth before me and the children be able to
endure, until I come unto my lord unto
Seir.
Please let my lord go
ahead of his
servant. I will continue on slowly, at a comfortable
pace for the
livestock and children, until I come to my lord at
Seir.”
And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within.
One day, however, Joseph went into the house to attend to his work, and not a single household servant was inside.
That she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to
mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I
cried with a loud voice:
she called her household
servants. “Look,” she said, “this Hebrew has been brought to us to make
sport of us. He came to me so he could sleep with me, but I
screamed as loud as I could.
And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew
servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to
mock me:
Then she told him the same story: “The Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make
sport of me,
And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy
servant to me; that his wrath was
kindled.
When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, “This is what your slave did to me,” he burned with anger.
And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh’s
birthday, that he made a feast unto all his
servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief
butler and of the chief
baker among his
servants.
On the third day, which was Pharaoh’s
birthday, he held a feast for all his officials, and in their presence he lifted up the heads of the chief
cupbearer and the chief
baker.
Pharaoh was
wroth with his
servants, and put me in ward in the captain of the guard’s house, both me and the chief
baker:
Pharaoh was once
angry with his
servants, and he put me and the chief
baker in the
custody of the captain of the guard.
And there was there with us a young man, an Hebrew,
servant to the captain of the guard; and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams; to each man according to his dream he did
interpret.
Now a young Hebrew was there with us, a servant of the captain of the guard. We told him our dreams and he interpreted them for us individually.
And the thing was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all his servants.
This proposal pleased Pharaoh and all his officials.
And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is?
So Pharaoh asked them, “Can we find
anyone like this man, in whom the Spirit of God abides?”
And they said unto him,
Nay, my lord, but to
buy food are thy
servants come.
“Not so, my lord,” they replied. “Your
servants have come to
buy food.
We are all one man’s sons; we are true men, thy
servants are no
spies.
We are all sons of one man. Your
servants are
honest men, not
spies.”
And they said, Thy
servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of
Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.
But they answered, “Your
servants are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of
Canaan. The youngest is now with our father, and one is no more.”
And they answered, Thy
servant our father is in good health, he is yet alive. And they bowed down their heads, and made
obeisance.
“Your servant our father is well,” they answered. “He is still alive.” And they bowed down to honor him.
And they said unto him, Wherefore saith my lord these words? God
forbid that thy
servants should do according to this thing:
“Why does my lord say these things?” they asked. “Your servants could not possibly do such a thing.
With
whomsoever of thy
servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be my lord’s
bondmen.
If any of your servants is found to have it, he must die, and the rest will become slaves of my lord.”
And he said, Now also let it be according unto your words; he with whom it is found shall be my
servant; and ye shall be
blameless.
“As you say,” replied the
steward. “But only the one who is found with the cup will be my slave, and the rest of you shall be free of
blame.”
And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord’s servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.
“What can we say to my lord?” Judah replied. “How can we
plead? How can we
justify ourselves? God has exposed the iniquity of your
servants. We are now my lord’s slaves—both we and the one who was found with the cup.”
And he said, God
forbid that I should do so: but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my
servant; and as for you, get you up in peace unto your father.
But Joseph replied, “Far be it from me to do this. The man who was found with the cup will be my slave. The rest of you may return to your father in peace.”
Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh.
Then Judah approached Joseph and said, “Sir, please let your
servant speak personally to my lord. Do not be
angry with your
servant, for you are equal to Pharaoh himself.
My lord asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father, or a brother?
My lord asked his servants, ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’
And thou saidst unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, that I may set mine eyes upon him.
Then you told your servants, ‘Bring him down to me so that I can see him for myself.’
And thou saidst unto thy servants, Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more.
But you said to your servants, ‘Unless your younger brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.’
And it came to pass when we came up unto thy servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.
Now when we returned to your servant my father, we relayed your words to him.
And thy servant my father said unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two sons:
And your servant my father said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons.
Now therefore when I come to thy
servant my father, and the
lad be not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the
lad’s life;
So if the boy is not with us when I return to your
servant, and if my father, whose life is
wrapped up in the boy’s life,
It shall come to pass, when he
seeth that the
lad is not with us, that he will die: and thy
servants shall bring down the gray hairs of thy
servant our father with sorrow to the grave.
sees that the boy is not with us, he will die. Then your
servants will have brought the gray hair of your
servant our father down to
Sheol in sorrow.
For thy
servant became
surety for the
lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then I shall bear the
blame to my father for ever.
Indeed, your
servant guaranteed the boy’s safety to my father, saying, ‘If I do not return him to you, I will bear the guilt before you, my father, all my life.’
Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy
servant abide instead of the
lad a
bondman to my lord; and let the
lad go up with his brethren.
Now please let your servant stay here as my lord’s slave in place of the boy. Let him return with his brothers.
And the fame thereof was heard in Pharaoh’s house, saying, Joseph’s brethren are come: and it pleased Pharaoh well, and his servants.
When the news reached Pharaoh’s house that Joseph’s brothers had come, Pharaoh and his servants were pleased.
That ye shall say, Thy
servants’ trade hath been about cattle from our youth even until now, both we, and also our fathers: that ye may dwell in the land of
Goshen; for every
shepherd is an
abomination unto the Egyptians.
you are to say, ‘Your
servants have raised
livestock ever since our youth—both we and our fathers.’ Then you will be allowed to settle in the land of
Goshen, since all
shepherds are
detestable to the Egyptians.”
And Pharaoh said unto his brethren, What is your occupation? And they said unto Pharaoh, Thy
servants are
shepherds, both we, and also our fathers.
“What is your occupation?” Pharaoh asked Joseph’s brothers. “Your
servants are
shepherds,” they replied, “both we and our fathers.”
They said moreover unto Pharaoh, For to
sojourn in the land are we come; for thy
servants have no pasture for their flocks; for the famine is
sore in the land of
Canaan: now therefore, we pray thee, let thy
servants dwell in the land of
Goshen.
Then they said to Pharaoh, “We have come to live in the land for a time, because there is no pasture for the flocks of your
servants, since the famine in the land of
Canaan has been severe. So now, please allow your
servants to settle in the land of
Goshen.”
Wherefore shall we die before thine eyes, both we and our land?
buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be
servants unto Pharaoh: and give us seed, that we may live, and not die, that the land be not
desolate.
Why should we perish before your eyes—we and our land as well? Purchase us and our land in exchange for food. Then we, along with our land, will be slaves to Pharaoh. Give us seed that we may live and not die, and that the land may not become
desolate.”
And they said, Thou hast saved our lives: let us find grace in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.
“You have saved our lives,” they said. “We have found favor in our lord’s eyes, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.”
And he saw that rest was good, and the land that it was pleasant; and bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant unto tribute.
He saw that his resting place was good and that his land was pleasant, so he bent his shoulder to the burden and submitted to labor as a servant.
And Joseph commanded his
servants the physicians to
embalm his father: and the physicians
embalmed Israel.
And Joseph directed the physicians in his service to
embalm his father Israel. So they
embalmed him,
And Joseph went up to
bury his father: and with him went up all the
servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,
Then Joseph went to
bury his father, and all the
servants of Pharaoh accompanied him—the elders of Pharaoh’s household and all the elders of the land of Egypt—
So shall ye say unto Joseph,
Forgive, I pray thee now, the
trespass of thy brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee,
forgive the
trespass of the
servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph
wept when they spake unto him.
‘This is what you are to say to Joseph: I
beg you, please
forgive the
transgression and sin of your brothers, for they did you wrong.’ So now, Joseph, please
forgive the
transgression of the
servants of the God of your father.” When their message came to him, Joseph
wept.
And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants.
His brothers also came to him, bowed down before him, and said, “We are your slaves!”
And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not
eloquent, neither
heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy
servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.
“Please, Lord,” Moses replied, “I have never been
eloquent, neither in the past nor since You have spoken to Your
servant, for I am slow of speech and tongue.”
Then the officers of the children of Israel came and
cried unto Pharaoh, saying, Wherefore dealest thou thus with thy
servants?
So the
Israelite foremen went and appealed to Pharaoh: “Why are you treating your
servants this way?
There is no straw given unto thy servants, and they say to us, Make brick: and, behold, thy servants are beaten; but the fault is in thine own people.
No straw has been given to your servants, yet we are told, ‘Make bricks!’ Look, your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people.”
And they said unto them, The LORD look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savour to be
abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his
servants, to put a sword in their hand to
slay us.
“May the LORD look upon you and judge you,” the
foremen said, “for you have made us a
stench before Pharaoh and his officials; you have placed in their hand a sword to kill us!”
And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and they did so as the LORD had commanded: and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it became a serpent.
So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the LORD had commanded. Aaron threw his staff down before Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a serpent.
And Moses and Aaron did so, as the LORD commanded; and he lifted up the rod, and
smote the waters that were in the river, in the sight of Pharaoh, and in the sight of his
servants; and all the waters that were in the river were turned to blood.
Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD had commanded; in the presence of Pharaoh and his officials, Aaron raised the staff and struck the water of the Nile, and all the water was turned to blood.
