But he
slew not their children, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, where the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers
shall not die for the children, neither
shall the children die for the fathers, but every man
shall die for his own sin.
Yet he did not put their sons to death, but acted according to what is written in the Law, in the Book of Moses, where the LORD commanded: “Fathers must not be put to death for their children, and children must not be put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.”
But if thou
wilt go, do it, be strong for the battle: God
shall make thee fall before the enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast down.
Even if you go and fight
bravely in battle, God will make you
stumble before the enemy, for God has power to help and power to overthrow.”
And
Amaziah said to the man of God, But what
shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of God answered, The LORD is able to give thee much more than this.
Amaziah asked the man of God, “What should I do about the hundred talents I have given to the army of Israel?” And the man of God replied, “The LORD is able to give you much more than this.”
And they
withstood Uzziah the king, and said unto him, It appertaineth not unto thee, Uzziah, to burn incense unto the LORD, but to the priests the sons of Aaron, that are consecrated to burn incense: go out of the sanctuary; for thou hast
trespassed; neither
shall it be for thine honour from the LORD God.
They took their stand against King Uzziah and said, “Uzziah, you have no right to offer incense to the LORD. Only the priests, the descendants of Aaron, are consecrated to burn incense. Leave the sanctuary, for you have acted unfaithfully; you will not receive honor from the LORD God.”
Then certain of the heads of the children of Ephraim,
Azariah the son of Johanan, Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth, and Jehizkiah the son of
Shallum, and
Amasa the son of Hadlai, stood up against them that came from the war,
Then some of the leaders of the Ephraimites—
Azariah son of Jehohanan, Berechiah son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah son of
Shallum, and
Amasa son of Hadlai—stood in opposition to those arriving from the war.
And said unto them, Ye
shall not bring in the
captives hither: for whereas we have
offended against the LORD already, ye intend to add more to our sins and to our
trespass: for our
trespass is great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel.
“You must not bring the
captives here,” they said, “for you are
proposing to bring guilt upon us from the LORD and to add to our sins and our guilt. For our guilt is great, and fierce anger is upon Israel.”
For if ye turn again unto the LORD, your brethren and your children
shall find
compassion before them that lead them
captive, so that they
shall come again into this land: for the LORD your God is
gracious and
merciful, and will not turn away his face from you, if ye return unto him.
For if you return to the LORD, your brothers and sons will receive mercy in the presence of their captors and will return to this land. For the LORD your God is
gracious and
merciful; He will not turn His face away from you if you return to Him.”
Is not
Hezekiah misleading you to give you over to death by famine and
thirst when he says, ‘The LORD our God will deliver us from the hand of the king of Assyria?’
Hath not the same
Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, Ye
shall worship before one altar, and burn incense upon it?
Did not
Hezekiah himself remove His high places and His altars and say to Judah and Jerusalem, ‘You must worship before one altar, and on it you
shall burn sacrifices’?
Now therefore let not
Hezekiah deceive you, nor
persuade you on this manner, neither yet believe him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less
shall your God deliver you out of mine hand?
So now, do not let
Hezekiah deceive you, and do not let him mislead you like this. Do not believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people from my hand or from the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God deliver you from my hand!”
He wrote also letters to rail on the LORD God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their people out of mine hand, so
shall not the God of
Hezekiah deliver his people out of mine hand.
He also wrote letters
mocking the LORD, the God of Israel, and saying against Him: “Just as the gods of the nations did not deliver their people from my hand, so the God of
Hezekiah will not deliver His people from my hand.”
Also he built altars in the house of the LORD,
whereof the LORD had said, In Jerusalem
shall my name be for ever.
Manasseh also built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD had said, “My Name will remain in Jerusalem
forever.”
And Hilkiah, and they that the king had appointed, went to Huldah the
prophetess, the wife of
Shallum the son of Tikvath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the
wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college:) and they spake to her to that effect.
So Hilkiah and those the king had designated went and spoke to Huldah the
prophetess, the wife of
Shallum son of Tokhath, the son of Hasrah, the keeper of the
wardrobe. She lived in Jerusalem, in the Second District.
Because they have
forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might
provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath
shall be poured out upon this place, and
shall not be
quenched.
because they have
forsaken Me and burned incense to other gods, that they might
provoke Me to anger with all the works of their hands. My wrath will be poured out upon this place and will not be
quenched.’
And as for the king of Judah, who sent you to
enquire of the LORD, so
shall ye say unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel concerning the words which thou hast heard;
But as for the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, tell him that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘As for the words that you heard,
Behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thine eyes see all the evil that I will bring upon this place, and upon the inhabitants of the same. So they brought the king word again.
‘Now I will indeed gather you to your fathers, and you will be gathered to your grave in peace. Your eyes will not see all the
calamity that I will bring on this place and on its inhabitants.’” So they brought her answer back to the king.
And said unto the Levites that taught all Israel, which were holy unto the LORD, Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel did build; it shall not be a burden upon your shoulders: serve now the LORD your God, and his people Israel,
To the Levites who taught all Israel and were holy to the LORD,
Josiah said: “Put the holy ark in the temple built by Solomon son of David king of Israel. It is not to be carried around on your shoulders. Now serve the LORD your God and His people Israel.
The children of the
porters: the children of
Shallum, the children of Ater, the children of Talmon, the children of Akkub, the children of Hatita, the children of Shobai, in all an hundred thirty and nine.
The gatekeepers: the descendants of Shallum, the descendants of Ater, the descendants of Talmon, the descendants of Akkub, the descendants of Hatita, and the descendants of Shobai, 139 in all.
Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me.
Now, therefore, issue an order for these men to stop, so that this city will not be rebuilt until I so order.
Moreover I make a decree what ye
shall do to the elders of these Jews for the building of this house of God: that of the king’s goods, even of the tribute beyond the river,
forthwith expenses be given unto these men, that they be not hindered.
I
hereby decree what you must do for these elders of the Jews who are rebuilding this house of God: The cost is to be paid in full to these men from the royal treasury out of the taxes of the provinces west of the Euphrates, so that the work will not be hindered.
Also I have made a decree, that
whosoever shall alter this word, let timber be pulled down from his house, and being set up, let him be
hanged thereon; and let his house be made a
dunghill for this.
I also decree that if any man interferes with this directive, a beam is to be
torn from his house and raised up, and he is to be impaled on it. And his own house
shall be made a pile of
rubble for this
offense.
And the God that hath caused his name to dwell there destroy all kings and people, that
shall put to their hand to alter and to destroy this house of God which is at Jerusalem. I
Darius have made a decree; let it be done with speed.
May God, who has caused His Name to dwell there, overthrow any king or people who lifts a hand to alter this decree or to destroy this house of God in Jerusalem. I,
Darius, have issued the decree. Let it be carried out with
diligence.
The son of
Shallum, the son of
Zadok, the son of Ahitub,
the son of
Shallum, the son of
Zadok, the son of Ahitub,
And
whatsoever shall seem good to thee, and to thy brethren, to do with the rest of the silver and the gold, that do after the will of your God.
You and your brothers may do whatever seems best with the rest of the silver and gold, according to the will of your God.
And if anything else is needed for the house of your God that you may have occasion to supply, you may pay for it from the royal treasury.
And I, even I
Artaxerxes the king, do make a decree to all the treasurers which are beyond the river, that
whatsoever Ezra the priest, the
scribe of the law of the God of heaven,
shall require of you, it be done speedily,
I, King
Artaxerxes, decree to all the treasurers west of the Euphrates: Whatever
Ezra the priest, the
scribe of the Law of the God of heaven, may require of you, it must be provided
promptly,
Also we
certify you, that touching any of the priests and Levites, singers,
porters,
Nethinims, or ministers of this house of God, it
shall not be lawful to
impose toll, tribute, or custom, upon them.
And be
advised that you have no authority to
impose tribute, duty, or
toll on any of the priests, Levites, singers, doorkeepers, temple servants, or other servants of this house of God.
And now, O our God, what
shall we say after this? for we have
forsaken thy commandments,
And now, our God, what can we say after this? For we have
forsaken the commandments
Should we again break thy commandments, and join in affinity with the people of these abominations? wouldest not thou be
angry with us till thou hadst consumed us, so that there should be no
remnant nor escaping?
shall we again break Your commandments and
intermarry with the peoples who commit these abominations? Would You not become so
angry with us as to
wipe us out, leaving no
remnant or
survivor?
Of the singers also; Eliashib: and of the
porters;
Shallum, and Telem, and
Uri.
From the singers: Eliashib. From the gatekeepers:
Shallum, Telem, and
Uri.
Shallum, Amariah, and Joseph.
Shallum, Amariah, and Joseph.
And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long
shall thy journey be? and when
wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.
Then the king, with the queen seated beside him, asked me, “How long will your journey take, and when will you return?” So it pleased the king to send me, and I set a time.
And a letter unto
Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which
appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I
shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.
And may I have a letter to
Asaph, keeper of the king’s forest, so that he will give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel to the temple, for the city wall, and for the house I will occupy.” And because the
gracious hand of my God was upon me, the king granted my requests.
And next unto him repaired Shallum the son of Halohesh, the ruler of the half part of Jerusalem, he and his daughters.
And next to them, Shallum son of Hallohesh, ruler of the other half-district of Jerusalem, made repairs, with the help of his daughters.
But the gate of the fountain repaired
Shallun the son of
Col-hozeh, the ruler of part of
Mizpah; he built it, and covered it, and set up the doors thereof, the locks thereof, and the bars thereof, and the wall of the
pool of
Siloah by the king’s garden, and unto the stairs that go down from the city of David.
The Fountain Gate was repaired by
Shallun son of
Col-hozeh, ruler of the district of
Mizpah. He rebuilt it, roofed it, and
installed its doors, bolts, and bars. He also repaired the wall of the
Pool of Shelah near the king’s garden, as far as the stairs that descend from the City of David.
Now
Tobiah the
Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he
shall even break down their stone wall.
Then
Tobiah the
Ammonite, who was beside him, said, “If even a fox were to
climb up on what they are building, it would break down their wall of stones!”
And our
adversaries said, They
shall not know, neither see, till we come in the midst among them, and
slay them, and cause the work to cease.
And our enemies said, “Before they know or see a thing, we will come into their midst, kill them, and put an end to the work.”
And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us they will be upon you.
At that time the Jews who lived nearby came and told us ten times over, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.”
In what place therefore ye hear the sound of the
trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God
shall fight for us.
Wherever you hear the sound of the horn,
rally to us there. Our God will fight for us!”
And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing to answer.
and said, “We have done our best to
buy back our Jewish brothers who were sold to foreigners, but now you are selling your own brothers, that they may be sold back to us!” But they remained silent, for they could find nothing to say.
And thou hast also appointed prophets to
preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah: and now
shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.
and you have even appointed prophets in Jerusalem to
proclaim on your behalf: ‘There is a king in Judah.’ Soon these rumors will reach the ears of the king. So come, let us
confer together.”
For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands
shall be
weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God,
strengthen my hands.
For they were all trying to
frighten us, saying, “Their hands will be
weakened in the work, and it will never be finished.” But now, my God,
strengthen my hands.
The
porters: the children of
Shallum, the children of Ater, the children of Talmon, the children of Akkub, the children of Hatita, the children of Shobai, an hundred thirty and eight.
The gatekeepers: the descendants of Shallum, the descendants of Ater, the descendants of Talmon, the descendants of Akkub, the descendants of Hatita, and the descendants of Shobai, 138 in all.
And testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law: yet they dealt proudly, and
hearkened not unto thy commandments, but
sinned against thy judgments, (which if a man do, he
shall live in them;) and withdrew the shoulder, and
hardened their neck, and would not hear.
You
admonished them to turn back to Your law, but they were
arrogant and disobeyed Your commandments. They
sinned against Your ordinances, by which a man will live if he practices them. They
stubbornly shrugged their shoulders; they
stiffened their necks and would not obey.
And that we should bring the firstfruits of our
dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and the
tithes of our ground unto the Levites, that the same Levites might have the
tithes in all the cities of our
tillage.
Moreover, we will bring to the priests at the storerooms of the house of our God the firstfruits of our
dough, of our grain offerings, of the fruit of all our trees, and of our new wine and oil. A tenth of our produce belongs to the Levites, so that they
shall receive
tithes in all the towns where we labor.
And the priest the son of Aaron
shall be with the Levites, when the Levites take
tithes: and the Levites
shall bring up the
tithe of the
tithes unto the house of our God, to the chambers, into the
treasure house.
A priest of Aaron’s line is to
accompany the Levites when they collect the tenth, and the Levites are to bring a tenth of these
tithes to the storerooms of the treasury in the house of our God.
For the children of Israel and the children of Levi
shall bring the offering of the corn, of the new wine, and the oil, unto the chambers, where are the vessels of the sanctuary, and the priests that minister, and the
porters, and the singers: and we will not
forsake the house of our God.
For the Israelites and the Levites are to bring the contributions of grain, new wine, and oil to the storerooms where the articles of the sanctuary are kept and where the ministering priests, the gatekeepers, and the singers stay. Thus we will not neglect the house of our God.”
And I
contended with them, and
cursed them, and
smote certain of them, and
plucked off their hair, and made them
swear by God, saying, Ye
shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for
yourselves.
I
rebuked them and called down curses on them. I beat some of these men and pulled out their hair. Then I made them take an oath before God and said, “You must not give your daughters in marriage to their sons or take their daughters as wives for your sons or for
yourselves!
Shall we then
hearken unto you to do all this great evil, to
transgress against our God in marrying strange wives?
Must we now hear that you too are doing all this terrible evil and acting unfaithfully against our God by marrying foreign women?”
What
shall we do unto the queen Vashti according to law, because she hath not performed the commandment of the king
Ahasuerus by the chamberlains?
“According to law,” he asked, “what should be done with Queen Vashti, since she refused to obey the command of King
Xerxes delivered by the eunuchs?”
For this deed of the queen
shall come abroad unto all women, so that they
shall despise their husbands in their eyes, when it
shall be reported, The king
Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she came not.
For the conduct of the queen will become known to all women, causing them to
despise their husbands and say, ‘King
Xerxes ordered Queen Vashti to be brought before him, but she did not come.’
Likewise shall the ladies of Persia and Media say this day unto all the king’s princes, which have heard of the deed of the queen. Thus shall there arise too much contempt and wrath.
This very day the noble women of Persia and Media who have heard about the queen’s conduct will say the same thing to all the king’s officials, resulting in much contempt and wrath.
If it please the king, let there go a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king
Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than she.
So if it pleases the king, let him issue a royal decree, and let it be recorded in the laws of Persia and Media so that it cannot be
repealed, that Vashti
shall never again enter the presence of King
Xerxes, and that her royal position
shall be given to a woman better than she.
And when the king’s decree which he shall make shall be published throughout all his empire, (for it is great,) all the wives shall give to their husbands honour, both to great and small.
The edict the king issues will be heard throughout his vast kingdom—and so all women, from the least to the greatest, will honor their husbands.”
All the king’s servants, and the people of the king’s provinces, do know, that
whosoever, whether man or woman,
shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king
shall hold out the golden
sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.
“All the royal officials and the people of the king’s provinces know that one law applies to every man or woman who approaches the king in the inner court without being summoned—that he be put to death. Only if the king extends the gold
scepter may that person live. But I have not been summoned to appear before the king for the past thirty days.”
For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then
shall there
enlargement and
deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father’s house
shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?
For if you remain silent at this time, relief and
deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows if perhaps you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”
Then said the king unto her, What
wilt thou, queen
Esther? and what is thy request? it
shall be even given thee to the half of the kingdom.
“What is it, Queen
Esther?” the king inquired. “What is your request? Even up to half the kingdom, it will be given to you.”
And the king said unto
Esther at the
banquet of wine, What is thy petition? and it
shall be granted thee: and what is thy request? even to the half of the kingdom it
shall be performed.
And as they
drank their wine, the king said to
Esther, “What is your petition? It will be given to you. What is your request? Even up to half the kingdom, it will be fulfilled.”
If I have found favour in the sight of the king, and if it please the king to grant my petition, and to perform my request, let the king and
Haman come to the
banquet that I
shall prepare for them, and I will do to
morrow as the king hath said.
If I have found favor in the sight of the king, and if it pleases the king to grant my petition and
fulfill my request, may the king and
Haman come
tomorrow to the
banquet I will prepare for them. Then I will answer the king’s question.”
So
Haman came in. And the king said unto him, What
shall be done unto the man whom the king delighteth to honour? Now
Haman thought in his heart, To whom would the king delight to do honour more than to myself?
Haman entered, and the king asked him, “What should be done for the man whom the king is delighted to honor?” Now
Haman thought to himself, “Whom would the king be delighted to honor more than me?”
And let this
apparel and horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king’s most noble princes, that they may
array the man
withal whom the king delighteth to honour, and bring him on
horseback through the street of the city, and
proclaim before him, Thus
shall it be done to the man whom the king delighteth to honour.
Let the
robe and the horse be entrusted to one of the king’s most noble princes. Let them
array the man the king wants to honor and
parade him on the horse through the city square,
proclaiming before him, ‘This is what is done for the man whom the king is delighted to honor!’”
Then took
Haman the
apparel and the horse, and
arrayed Mordecai, and brought him on
horseback through the street of the city, and proclaimed before him, Thus
shall it be done unto the man whom the king delighteth to honour.
So
Haman took the
robe and the horse,
arrayed Mordecai, and
paraded him through the city square, crying out before him, “This is what is done for the man whom the king is delighted to honor!”
And the king said again unto
Esther on the second day at the
banquet of wine, What is thy petition, queen
Esther? and it
shall be granted thee: and what is thy request? and it
shall be performed, even to the half of the kingdom.
and as they
drank their wine on that second day, the king asked once more, “Queen
Esther, what is your petition? It will be given to you. What is your request? Even up to half the kingdom, it will be fulfilled.”
For how can I
endure to see the evil that
shall come unto my people? or how can I
endure to see the destruction of my kindred?
For how could I bear to see the
disaster that would
befall my people? How could I bear to see the destruction of my kindred?”
And the king said unto
Esther the queen, The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in
Shushan the palace, and the ten sons of
Haman; what have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces? now what is thy petition? and it
shall be granted thee: or what is thy request further? and it
shall be done.
who said to Queen
Esther, “In the citadel of
Susa the Jews have killed and destroyed five hundred men, including
Haman’s ten sons. What have they done in the rest of the royal provinces? Now what is your petition? It will be given to you. And what further do you request? It will be fulfilled.”
And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s
womb, and naked
shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.
saying: “Naked I came from my mother’s
womb, and naked I will return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD.”
But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the
foolish women speaketh. What?
shall we receive good at the hand of God, and
shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.
“You speak as a
foolish woman speaks,” he told her. “Should we accept from God only good and not
adversity?” In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.
Shall mortal man be more just than God?
shall a man be more pure than his maker?
‘Can a
mortal be more righteous than God, or a man more pure than his Maker?
He
shall deliver thee in six troubles:
yea, in seven there
shall no evil touch thee.
In famine he
shall redeem thee from death: and in war from the power of the sword.
In famine He will
redeem you from death, and in battle from the stroke of the sword.
For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field: and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.
For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field, and the wild animals will be at peace with you.
And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle
shall be in peace; and thou shalt visit thy
habitation, and shalt not sin.
You will know that your tent is secure, and find nothing
amiss when
inspecting your home.
Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, and thine offspring as the grass of the earth.
You will know that your offspring will be many, your descendants like the grass of the earth.
When I lie down, I say, When
shall I arise, and the night be gone? and I am full of tossings to and
fro unto the
dawning of the day.
When I lie down I think: ‘When will I get up?’ But the night drags on, and I
toss and turn until
dawn.
O remember that my life is wind: mine eye shall no more see good.
Remember that my life is but a breath. My eyes will never again see happiness.
The eye of him that hath seen me shall see me no more: thine eyes are upon me, and I am not.
The eye that beholds me will no longer see me. You will look for me, but I will be no more.
As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away: so he that goeth down to the grave shall come up no more.
As a cloud vanishes and is gone, so he who goes down to
Sheol does not come back up.
He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more.
He never returns to his house; his place remembers him no more.
When I say, My bed
shall comfort me, my
couch shall ease my
complaint;
When I think my bed will comfort me and my
couch will ease my
complaint,
I have
sinned; what
shall I do unto thee, O thou preserver of men? why hast thou set me as a mark against thee, so that I am a burden to myself?
If I have
sinned, what have I done to You, O watcher of mankind? Why have You made me Your
target, so that I am a burden to You?
And why
dost thou not
pardon my
transgression, and take away mine iniquity? for now
shall I sleep in the dust; and thou shalt seek me in the morning, but I
shall not be.
Why do You not
pardon my
transgression and take away my iniquity? For soon I will lie down in the dust; You will seek me, but I will be no more.”
How long
wilt thou speak these things? and how long
shall the words of thy mouth be like a strong wind?
“How long will you go on saying such things? The words of your mouth are a
blustering wind.
Shall not they teach thee, and tell thee, and utter words out of their heart?
Will they not teach you and tell you, and speak from their understanding?
So are the paths of all that
forget God; and the
hypocrite’s hope
shall perish:
Such is the
destiny of all who
forget God; so the hope of the godless will perish.
Whose hope
shall be cut off, and whose trust
shall be a
spider’s web.
He
shall lean upon his house, but it
shall not stand: he
shall hold it fast, but it
shall not
endure.
He leans on his web, but it gives way; he holds fast, but it does not
endure.
If he destroy him from his place, then it shall deny him, saying, I have not seen thee.
If he is uprooted from his place, it will disown him, saying, ‘I never saw you.’
Behold, this is the joy of his way, and out of the earth shall others grow.
Surely this is the joy of his way; yet others will spring from the dust.
They that
hate thee
shall be clothed with shame; and the dwelling place of the wicked
shall come to
nought.
Your enemies will be clothed in shame, and the tent of the wicked will be no more.”
How much less shall I answer him, and choose out my words to reason with him?
How then can I answer Him or choose my arguments against Him?
If I speak of strength, lo, he is strong: and if of judgment, who
shall set me a time to
plead?
If it is a matter of strength, He is indeed mighty! If it is a matter of justice, who can
summon Him?
If I
justify myself, mine own mouth
shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it

Even if I were righteous, my mouth would
condemn me; if I were
blameless, it would declare me guilty.
then You would
plunge me into the pit, and even my own clothes would
despise me.

And thine age

shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning.
Your life will be brighter than
noonday; its darkness will be like the morning.
Also thou shalt lie down, and none
shall make thee afraid;
yea, many
shall make suit unto thee.
You will lie down without fear, and many will court your favor.
But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and they shall not escape, and their hope shall be as the giving up of the ghost.
But the eyes of the wicked will fail, and escape will
elude them; they will hope for their last breath.”
No doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.
“Truly then you are the people with whom wisdom itself will die!
But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee:
But ask the animals, and they will
instruct you; ask the birds of the air, and they will tell you.
