And
Abimelech dwelt at Arumah: and Zebul thrust out Gaal and his brethren, that they should not dwell in
Shechem.
Abimelech stayed in Arumah, and Zebul drove Gaal and his brothers out of
Shechem.
And it came to pass on the
morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told
Abimelech.
The next day the people of
Shechem went out into the fields, and this was reported to
Abimelech.
And when all the men of the tower of
Shechem heard that, they entered into an hold of the house of the god Berith.
On hearing of this, all the leaders in the tower of
Shechem entered the inner chamber of the temple of El-berith.
And it was told
Abimelech, that all the men of the tower of
Shechem were gathered together.
And when
Abimelech was told that all the leaders in the tower of
Shechem were gathered there,
And all the people likewise cut down every man his
bough, and followed
Abimelech, and put them to the hold, and set the hold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of
Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.
So each man also cut his own branch and followed
Abimelech. Then they piled the branches against the inner chamber and set it on fire above them, killing
everyone in the tower of
Shechem, about a thousand men and women.
And all the evil of the men of
Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the
curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.
And God also brought all the wickedness of the men of
Shechem back upon their own heads. So the
curse of Jotham son of Jerubbaal came upon them.
And
Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with
timbrels and with dances: and
she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.
And when
Jephthah returned home to
Mizpah, there was his daughter coming out to meet him with tambourines and dancing!
She was his only child; he had no son or daughter besides her.
And
she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth;
forasmuch as the LORD hath taken
vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of
Ammon.
“My father,”
she replied, “you have given your word to the LORD. Do to me as you have said, for the LORD has
avenged you of your enemies, the
Ammonites.”
And
she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and
bewail my
virginity, I and my fellows.
She also said to her father, “Let me do this one thing: Let me
wander for two months through the mountains with my friends and
mourn my
virginity.”
And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and
she went with her companions, and
bewailed her
virginity upon the mountains.
“Go,” he said. And he sent her away for two months. So
she left with her friends and
mourned her
virginity upon the mountains.
And it came to pass at the end of two months, that
she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his
vow which he had
vowed: and
she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel,
After two months,
she returned to her father, and he did to her as he had
vowed. And
she had never had relations with a man. So it has become a custom in Israel
And God
hearkened to the voice of
Manoah; and the angel of God came again unto the woman as
she sat in the field: but
Manoah her husband was not with her.
And God
listened to the voice of
Manoah, and the angel of God returned to the woman as
she was sitting in the field; but her husband
Manoah was not with her.
And the woman made
haste, and ran, and
shewed her husband, and said unto him, Behold, the man hath appeared unto me, that came unto me the other day.
The woman ran quickly to tell her husband, “Behold, the man who came to me the other day has reappeared!”
She may not eat of any thing that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing: all that I commanded her let her observe.
She must not eat anything that comes from the vine, nor drink any wine or strong drink, nor eat anything unclean. She must do everything I have commanded her.”
But his wife said unto him, If the LORD were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt offering and a meat offering at our hands, neither would he have shewed us all these things, nor would as at this time have told us such things as these.
But his wife replied, “If the LORD had intended to kill us, He would not have accepted the burnt offering and the grain offering from our hands, nor would He have shown us all these things or spoken to us this way.”
Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the
uncircumcised Philistines? And
Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for
she pleaseth me well.
But his father and mother replied, “Can’t you find a young woman among your relatives or among any of our people? Must you go to the
uncircumcised Philistines to get a wife?” But
Samson told his father, “Get her for me, for
she is pleasing to my eyes.”
And he went down, and talked with the woman; and
she pleased
Samson well.
Then
Samson continued on his way down and spoke to the woman, because
she was pleasing to his eyes.
And
Samson said unto them, I will now put forth a
riddle unto you: if ye can certainly declare it me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty
sheets and thirty change of garments:
“Let me tell you a
riddle,”
Samson said to them. “If you can
solve it for me within the seven days of the feast, I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes.
But if ye cannot declare it me, then shall ye give me thirty
sheets and thirty change of garments. And they said unto him, Put forth thy
riddle, that we may hear it.
But if you cannot
solve it, you must give me thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes.” “Tell us your
riddle,” they replied. “Let us hear it.”
And
she wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted: and it came to pass on the seventh day, that he told her, because
she lay
sore upon him: and
she told the
riddle to the children of her people.
She wept the whole seven days of the feast, and finally on the seventh day, because
she had pressed him so much, he told her the answer. And in turn
she explained the
riddle to her people.
And her father said, I
verily thought that thou hadst utterly
hated her; therefore I gave her to thy companion: is not her younger sister fairer than
she? take her, I pray thee, instead of her.
“I was sure that you thoroughly
hated her,” said her father, “so I gave her to one of the men who accompanied you. Is not her younger sister more beautiful than
she? Please take her instead.”
And the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and said unto her,
Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lieth, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to
afflict him: and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver.
The lords of the Philistines went to her and said, “
Entice him and find out the source of his great strength and how we can overpower him to
tie him up and
subdue him. Then each one of us will give you eleven hundred
shekels of silver.”
Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green withs which had not been dried, and she bound him with them.
So the lords of the Philistines brought her seven fresh bowstrings that had not been dried, and
she tied him up with them.
Now there were men lying in wait,
abiding with her in the chamber. And
she said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And he
brake the withs, as a thread of
tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. So his strength was not known.
While the men were hidden in her room,
she called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” But he
snapped the bowstrings like a
strand of yarn
seared by a flame. So the source of his strength remained unknown.
And
she fastened it with the pin, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And he
awaked out of his sleep, and went away with the pin of the beam, and with the web.
So while he
slept,
Delilah took the seven braids of his hair and
wove them into the web.Then
she tightened it with a pin and called to him, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” But he
awoke from his sleep and pulled out the pin with the
loom and the web.
And
she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thine heart is not with me? thou hast
mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth.
“How can you say, ‘I love you,’”
she asked, “when your heart is not with me? This is the third time you have
mocked me and failed to
reveal to me the source of your great strength!”
And it came to pass, when
she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was
vexed unto death;
Finally, after
she had pressed him daily with her words and
pleaded until he was sick to death,
And when
Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart,
she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath
shewed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand.
When
Delilah realized that he had revealed to her all that was in his heart,
she sent this message to the lords of the Philistines: “Come up once more, for he has revealed to me all that is in his heart.” Then the lords of the Philistines came to her, bringing the money in their hands.
And
she made him sleep upon her knees; and
she called for a man, and
she caused him to
shave off the seven locks of his head; and
she began to
afflict him, and his strength went from him.
And having
lulled him to sleep on her
lap,
she called a man to
shave off the seven braids of his head. In this way
she began to
subdue him, and his strength left him.
And
she said, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And he
awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and
shake myself. And he
wist not that the LORD was departed from him.
Then
she called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” When
Samson awoke from his sleep, he thought, “I will escape as I did before and
shake myself free.” But he did not know that the LORD had departed from him.
And he said unto his mother, The eleven hundred shekels of silver that were taken from thee, about which thou cursedst, and spakest of also in mine ears, behold, the silver is with me; I took it. And his mother said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my son.
said to his mother, “The eleven hundred
shekels of silver that were taken from you and about which I heard you utter a
curse—I have the silver here with me; I took it.” Then his mother said, “Blessed be my son by the LORD!”
And when he had restored the eleven hundred
shekels of silver to his mother, his mother said, I had wholly dedicated the silver unto the LORD from my hand for my son, to make a
graven image and a
molten image: now therefore I will restore it unto thee.
And when he had returned the eleven hundred
shekels of silver to his mother,
she said, “I wholly
dedicate the silver to the LORD for my son’s benefit, to make a
graven image and a
molten idol. Therefore I will now return it to you.”
Yet he restored the money unto his mother; and his mother took two hundred
shekels of silver, and gave them to the founder, who made thereof a
graven image and a
molten image: and they were in the house of
Micah.
So he returned the silver to his mother, and
she took two hundred
shekels of silver and gave them to a
silversmith, who made them into a
graven image and a
molten idol. And they were placed in the house of
Micah.
And
Micah said unto him, Dwell with me, and be unto me a father and a priest, and I will give thee ten
shekels of silver by the year, and a suit of
apparel, and thy
victuals. So the
Levite went in.
“Stay with me,”
Micah said to him, “and be my father and priest, and I will give you ten
shekels of silver per year, a suit of clothes, and your provisions.” So the
Levite went in
And his
concubine played the
whore against him, and went away from him unto her father’s house to Bethlehemjudah, and was there four whole months.
But
she was unfaithful to him and left him to return to her father’s house in
Bethlehem in Judah. After
she had been there four months,
And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak friendly unto her, and to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of
asses: and
she brought him into her father’s house: and when the father of the
damsel saw him, he
rejoiced to meet him.
her husband got up and went after her to speak kindly to her and bring her back, taking his servant and a pair of
donkeys. So the
girl brought him into her father’s house, and when her father saw him, he
gladly welcomed him.
Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was gathered together as one man, from
Dan even to Beer-
sheba, with the land of
Gilead, unto the LORD in Mizpeh.
Then all the Israelites from
Dan to
Beersheba and from the land of
Gilead came out, and the congregation assembled as one man before the LORD at
Mizpah.
And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and
beset the house round about upon me by night, and thought to have slain me: and my
concubine have they forced, that
she is dead.
And during the night, the men of Gibeah rose up against me and surrounded the house. They intended to kill me, but they
abused my
concubine, and
she died.
Then they said, Behold, there is a feast of the LORD in
Shiloh yearly in a place which is on the north side of
Bethel, on the east side of the
highway that goeth up from
Bethel to
Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.
“But look,” they said, “there is a yearly feast to the LORD in
Shiloh, which is north of
Bethel east of the road that goes up from
Bethel to
Shechem, and south of Lebonah.”
And Elimelech
Naomi’s husband died; and
she was left, and her two sons.
Then
Naomi’s husband Elimelech died, and
she was left with her two sons,
Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread.
When
Naomi heard in Moab that the LORD had attended to His people by providing them with food,
she and her daughters-in-law prepared to leave the land of Moab.
Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah.
Accompanied by her two daughters-in-law, she left the place where she had been living and set out on the road leading back to the land of Judah.
The LORD grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then
she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and
wept.
May the LORD enable each of you to find rest in the home of your new husband.” And
she kissed them as they
wept aloud And she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods: return thou after thy sister in law.
“Look,” said
Naomi, “your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and her gods; follow her back home.”
When
she saw that
she was
stedfastly minded to go with her, then
she left speaking unto her.
When
Naomi saw that
Ruth was determined to go with her,
she stopped trying to
persuade her.
And
she said unto them, Call me not
Naomi, call me
Mara: for the
Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me.
“Do not call me
Naomi,”
she replied. “Call me
Mara, because the
Almighty has dealt quite bitterly with me.
And
Ruth the
Moabitess said unto
Naomi, Let me now go to the field, and
glean ears of corn after him in whose sight I shall find grace. And
she said unto her, Go, my daughter.
And
Ruth the
Moabitess said to
Naomi, “Please let me go into the fields and
glean heads of grain after someone in whose sight I may find favor.” “Go
ahead, my daughter,”
Naomi replied.
And
she went, and came, and
gleaned in the field after the reapers: and her
hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech.
So
Ruth departed and went out into the field and
gleaned after the harvesters. And
she happened to come to the part of the field belonging to Boaz, who was from the clan of Elimelech.
And the servant that was set over the reapers answered and said, It is the
Moabitish damsel that came back with
Naomi out of the country of Moab:
And
she said, I pray you, let me
glean and gather after the reapers among the
sheaves: so
she came, and hath continued even from the morning until now, that
she tarried a little in the house.
She has said, ‘Please let me
glean and gather among the
sheaves after the harvesters.’ So
she came out and has continued from morning until now, except that
she rested a short time in the
shelter.”
Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said unto him, Why have I found grace in thine eyes, that thou shouldest take knowledge of me, seeing I am a stranger?
At this, she fell on her face, bowing low to the ground, and said to him, “Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you should take notice of me, even though I am a foreigner?”
And Boaz answered and said unto her, It hath fully been
shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband: and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy
nativity, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not
heretofore.
Boaz replied, “I have been made fully aware of all you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband, how you left your father and mother and the land of your birth, and how you came to a people you did not know before.
Then
she said, Let me find favour in thy sight, my lord; for that thou hast comforted me, and for that thou hast spoken friendly unto thine
handmaid, though I be not like unto one of thine handmaidens.
“My lord,”
she said, “may I continue to find favor in your eyes, for you have comforted and spoken kindly to your
maidservant, though I am not like one of your servant girls.”
And Boaz said unto her, At
mealtime come thou
hither, and eat of the bread, and dip thy
morsel in the
vinegar. And
she sat beside the reapers: and he reached her
parched corn, and
she did eat, and was sufficed, and left.
At
mealtime Boaz said to her, “Come over here; have some bread and dip it into the
vinegar sauce.” So
she sat down beside the harvesters, and he offered her
roasted grain, and
she ate and was satisfied and had some left over.
And when
she was risen up to
glean, Boaz commanded his young men, saying, Let her
glean even among the
sheaves, and reproach her not:
When
Ruth got up to
glean, Boaz ordered his young men, “Even if
she gathers among the
sheaves, do not
insult her.
And let fall also some of the handfuls of purpose for her, and leave them, that
she may
glean them, and
rebuke her not.
Rather, pull out for her some stalks from the bundles and leave them for her to gather. Do not
rebuke her.”
So
she gleaned in the field until even, and beat out that
she had
gleaned: and it was about an
ephah of barley.
So
Ruth gathered grain in the field until evening. And when
she beat out what
she had
gleaned, it was about an
ephah of barley.
And
she took it up, and went into the city: and her mother in law saw what
she had
gleaned: and
she brought forth, and gave to her that
she had reserved after
she was sufficed.
She picked up the grain and went into the town, where her mother-in-law saw what
she had
gleaned. And
she brought out what
she had saved from her meal and gave it to
Naomi.
And her mother in law said unto her, Where hast thou
gleaned to day? and where wroughtest thou? blessed be he that did take knowledge of thee. And
she shewed her mother in law with whom
she had wrought, and said, The man’s name with whom I wrought to day is Boaz.
Then her mother-in-law asked her, “Where did you
glean today, and where did you work? Blessed be the man who noticed you.” So
she told her mother-in-law where
she had worked. “The name of the man I worked with
today is Boaz,”
she said.
So
she kept fast by the maidens of Boaz to
glean unto the end of barley harvest and of wheat harvest; and dwelt with her mother in law.
So
Ruth stayed close to the servant girls of Boaz to
glean grain until the barley and wheat harvests were finished. And
she lived with her mother-in-law.
And she said unto her, All that thou sayest unto me I will do.
“I will do everything you say,”
Ruth answered.
And
she went down unto the floor, and did according to all that her mother in law
bade her.
So
she went down to the
threshing floor and did everything her mother-in-law had
instructed her to do.
And when Boaz had eaten and
drunk, and his heart was
merry, he went to lie down at the end of the
heap of corn: and
she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down.
After Boaz had finished eating and drinking and was in good spirits, he went to lie down at the end of the
heap of grain. Then
Ruth went in secretly, uncovered his feet, and lay down.
“Who are you?” he asked. “I am your servant
Ruth,”
she replied. “Spread the corner of your garment over me, for you are a
kinsman-
redeemer.”
And he said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter: for thou hast shewed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich.
Then Boaz said, “May the LORD
bless you, my daughter. You have shown more kindness now than before, because you have not run after the younger men, whether rich or poor.
And she lay at his feet until the morning: and she rose up before one could know another. And he said, Let it not be known that a woman came into the floor.
So
she lay down at his feet until morning, but
she got up before
anyone else could recognize her. Then Boaz said, “Do not let it be known that a woman came to the
threshing floor.”
Also he said, Bring the
vail that thou hast upon thee, and hold it. And when
she held it, he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her: and
she went into the city.
And he told her, “Bring the
shawl you are wearing and hold it out.” When
she did so, he
shoveled six measures of barley into her
shawl. Then he went into the city.
And when she came to her mother in law, she said, Who art thou, my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her.
When
Ruth returned to her mother-in-law,
Naomi asked her, “How did it go, my daughter?” Then
Ruth told her all that Boaz had done for her.
And she said, These six measures of barley gave he me; for he said to me, Go not empty unto thy mother in law.
And she said, “He gave me these six measures of barley, for he said, ‘Do not go back to your mother-in-law empty-handed.’”
Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day.
“Wait, my daughter,” said
Naomi, “until you find out how things go, for he will not rest unless he has resolved the matter
today.”
So Boaz took
Ruth, and
she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the LORD gave her conception, and
she bare a son.
So Boaz took
Ruth, and
she became his wife. And when he had relations with her, the LORD enabled her to conceive, and
she gave birth to a son.
And as he did so year by year, when
she went up to the house of the LORD, so
she provoked her; therefore
she wept, and did not eat.
And this went on year after year. Whenever
Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, her rival
taunted her until
she wept and would not eat.
And
she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and
wept sore.
In her bitter distress,
Hannah prayed to the LORD and
wept with many tears.
And
she vowed a
vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou
wilt indeed look on the
affliction of thine
handmaid, and remember me, and not
forget thine
handmaid, but
wilt give unto thine
handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no
razor come upon his head.
And it came to pass, as
she continued praying before the LORD, that
Eli marked her mouth.
As
Hannah kept on praying before the LORD,
Eli watched her mouth.
Now
Hannah,
she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore
Eli thought
she had been
drunken.
Hannah was praying in her heart, and though her lips were moving, her voice could not be heard. So
Eli thought
she was
drunk And
she said, Let thine
handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more
sad.
“May your
maidservant find favor with you,” said
Hannah. Then
she went on her way, and
she began eating again, and her face was no longer
downcast.
Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after
Hannah had conceived, that
she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.
So in the course of time,
Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son.
She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked for him from the LORD.”
But
Hannah went not up; for
she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be
weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and there
abide for ever.
but
Hannah did not go. “After the boy is
weaned,”
she said to her husband, “I will take him to appear before the LORD and to stay there permanently.”
And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good;
tarry until thou have
weaned him; only the LORD establish his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son
suck until
she weaned him.
“Do what you think is best,” her husband Elkanah replied, “and stay here until you have
weaned him. Only may the LORD
confirm His word.” So
Hannah stayed and
nursed her son until
she had
weaned him.
And when
she had
weaned him,
she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one
ephah of flour, and a
bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of the LORD in
Shiloh: and the child was young.
Once
she had
weaned him,
Hannah took the boy with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an
ephah of flour, and a skin of wine. Though the boy was still young,
she brought him to the house of the LORD at
Shiloh.
And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the LORD.
“Please, my lord,” said
Hannah, “as surely as you live, my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the LORD.
They that were full have
hired out themselves for bread; and they that were
hungry ceased: so that the barren hath born seven; and
she that hath many children is waxed feeble.
The well-fed
hire themselves out for food, but the
starving hunger no more. The barren woman gives birth to seven, but
she who has many sons pines away.
The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up.
The LORD brings death and gives life; He brings down to
Sheol and raises up.
Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.
Each year his mother would make him a little
robe and bring it to him when
she went with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice.
And
Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, The LORD give thee seed of this woman for the
loan which is lent to the LORD. And they went unto their own home.
And
Eli would
bless Elkanah and his wife, saying, “May the LORD give you children by this woman in place of the one
she dedicated to the LORD.” Then they would go home.
And the LORD visited
Hannah, so that
she conceived, and bare three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before the LORD.
So the LORD attended to
Hannah, and
she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the LORD.
And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel feared to
shew Eli the vision.
Samuel lay down until the morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the LORD. He was afraid to tell
Eli the vision,
And all Israel from
Dan even to Beer-
sheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD.
So all Israel from
Dan to
Beersheba knew that Samuel was confirmed as a prophet of the LORD.
And his daughter in law,
Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when
she heard the
tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead,
she bowed herself and
travailed; for her pains came upon her.
Now
Eli’s daughter-in-law, the wife of
Phinehas, was
pregnant and about to give birth. When
she heard the news of the capture of God’s ark and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband,
she collapsed and gave birth, for her labor pains overtook her.
And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.
As
she was dying, the women attending to her said, “Do not be afraid, for you have given birth to a son!” But
she did not
respond or pay any
heed.
And she named the child I-chabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.
And she named the boy Ichabod, saying, “The glory has departed from Israel,” because the ark of God had been captured and her father-in-law and her husband had been killed.
And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.
“The glory has departed from Israel,” she said, “for the ark of God has been captured.”
And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Beth-
shemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that
smote us; it was a chance that happened to us.
but keep watching it. If it goes up the road to its homeland, toward Beth-
shemesh, it is the LORD who has brought on us this great
disaster. But if it does not, then we will know that it was not His hand that punished us and that it happened by chance.”
And the
kine took the straight way to the way of Beth-
shemesh, and went along the
highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Beth-
shemesh.
And the cows headed straight up the road toward Beth-
shemesh, staying on that one
highway and lowing as they went, never
straying to the right or to the left. The rulers of the Philistines followed behind them to the border of Beth-
shemesh.
And they of Beth-
shemesh were
reaping their wheat harvest in the valley: and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and
rejoiced to see it.
Now the people of Beth-shemesh were harvesting wheat in the valley, and when they looked up and saw the ark, they were overjoyed at the sight.
And the
cart came into the field of Joshua, a Beth-
shemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they
clave the wood of the
cart, and offered the
kine a burnt offering unto the LORD.
The
cart came to the field of Joshua of Beth-
shemesh and stopped there near a large rock. The people
chopped up the
cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to the LORD.
And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD, and the
coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Beth-
shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto the LORD.
And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD and the chest containing the gold objects, and they placed them on the large rock. That day the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and made sacrifices to the LORD.
And the golden
mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of
fenced cities, and of country villages, even unto the great stone of
Abel,
whereon they set down the ark of the LORD: which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua, the Beth-
shemite.
The number of gold rats also corresponded to the number of
Philistine cities belonging to the five rulers—the fortified cities and their outlying villages. And the large rock on which they placed the ark of the LORD stands to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth-
shemesh.
And he
smote the men of Beth-
shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he
smote of the people fifty thousand and
threescore and ten men: and the people
lamented, because the LORD had
smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.
But God struck down some of the people of Beth-
shemesh because they looked inside the ark of the LORD. He struck down seventy men, and the people
mourned because the LORD had struck them with a great slaughter.
