Haran, and dwelt there.
And Terah took his
son Abram, his grandson Lot
son of
Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai the wife of
Abram, and they set out from
Ur of the Chaldeans for the land of
Canaan. But when they arrived in
Haran, they settled there.
And
Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s
son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had
gotten in
Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of
Canaan; and into the land of
Canaan they came.
And
Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all the possessions and people they had acquired in
Haran, and set out for the land of
Canaan. When they came to the land of

And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a
son, and shalt call his name
Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy
affliction.
The angel of the LORD proceeded: “Behold, you have conceived and will bear a
son. And you shall name him
Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your cry of
affliction.
And I will
bless her, and give thee a
son also of her:
yea, I will
bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.
And I will
bless her and will surely give you a
son by her. I will

son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an

son, and you are to name him Isaac. I will establish My covenant with him as an
everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.
And Abraham took
Ishmael his
son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house; and
circumcised the flesh of their
foreskin in the
selfsame day, as God had said unto him.
On that very day Abraham took his
son Ishmael and all those born in his household or purchased with his money—every male among the members of Abraham’s household—and he
circumcised them, just as God had told him.
And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo,
Sarah thy wife shall have a
son. And
Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him.
Then the LORD said, “I will surely return to you at this time next year, and your wife
Sarah will have a
son!” Now
Sarah was behind him,
listening at the entrance to the tent.
Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and
Sarah shall have a
son.
Is anything too difficult for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you—in about a year—and
Sarah will have a
son.”
And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides?
son in law, and thy
sons, and thy daughters, and
whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place:
Then the two men said to Lot, “Do you have
anyone else here—a
son-in-law, your
sons or daughters, or
anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here,
And Lot went out, and spake unto his
sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that
mocked unto his
sons in law.
So Lot went out and spoke to the
sons-in-law who were
pledged in marriage to his daughters. “Get up,” he said. “Get out of this place, for the LORD is about to destroy the city!” But his
sons-in-law thought he was
joking.

son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of
Ammon unto this day.
The younger daughter also gave birth to a
son, and she named him Ben-ammi. He is the father of the
Ammonites of
today.
For
Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a
son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.
So
Sarah conceived and bore a
son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised.
And Abraham called the name of his
son that was born unto him, whom
Sarah bare to him, Isaac.
And Abraham gave the name Isaac to the
son Sarah bore to him.
And Abraham
circumcised his
son Isaac being eight days old, as God had commanded him.
When his
son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham
circumcised him, as God had commanded him.
And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him.
Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.
And she said, Who would have said unto Abraham, that
Sarah should have given children
suck? for I have born him a
son in his old age.
She added, “Who would have told Abraham that
Sarah would
nurse children? Yet I have borne him a
son in his old age.”
And
Sarah saw the
son of
Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham,
mocking.
But
Sarah saw that the
son whom
Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was
mocking her
son,
Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this
bondwoman and her
son: for the
son of this
bondwoman shall not be heir with my
son, even with Isaac.
and she said to Abraham, “
Expel the slave woman and her
son, for the slave woman’s
son will never share in the inheritance with my
son Isaac!”
And the thing was very
grievous in Abraham’s sight because of his
son.
Now this matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his
son Ishmael.
And also of the
son of the
bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed.
But I will also make a nation of the slave woman’s son, because he is your offspring.”
Now therefore
swear unto me here by God that thou
wilt not deal falsely with me, nor with my
son, nor with my
son’s
son: but according to the kindness that I have done unto thee, thou shalt do unto me, and to the land wherein thou hast
sojourned.
Now, therefore,
swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or descendants. Show to me and to the country in which you reside the same kindness that I have shown to you.”
And he said, Take now thy
son, thine only
son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of
Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
“Take your
son,” God said, “your only
son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of
Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.”
And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and
saddled his
ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his
son, and
clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
So Abraham got up early the next morning,
saddled his
donkey, and took along two of his servants and his
son Isaac. He split the wood for a burnt offering and set out for the place God had designated.
And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.
Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his
son Isaac. He himself carried the fire and the
sacrificial knife, and the two of them walked on together.
And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?
Then Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” “Here I am, my son,” he replied. “The fire and the wood are here,” said Isaac, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
Abraham answered, “God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two walked on together.
And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
When they arrived at the place God had designated, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood. He bound his
son Isaac and placed him on the altar,
atop the wood.
And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to
slay his
son.
Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.
And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the
lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not
withheld thy
son, thine only
son from me.
“Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him,” said the angel, “for now I know that you fear God, since you have not
withheld your only
son from me.”
And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a
thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the
stead of his
son.
Then Abraham looked up and saw behind him a ram in a
thicket, caught by its horns. So he went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his
son.
And said, By myself have I
sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not
withheld thy
son, thine only
son:
saying, “By Myself I have
sworn, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not
withheld your only
son,
And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah, she hath also born children unto thy brother
Nahor;
Some time later, Abraham was told, “Milcah has also borne
sons to your brother
Nahor:
And
Bethuel became the father of
Rebekah. Milcah bore these eight
sons to Abraham’s brother
Nahor.
And Abraham stood up from before his dead, and spake unto the
sons of
Heth, saying,
Then Abraham got up from beside his dead wife and said to the
Hittites,
And he communed with them, saying, If it be your mind that I should
bury my dead out of my sight; hear me, and intreat for me to Ephron the
son of
Zohar,
“If you are willing for me to
bury my dead,” he said to them, “
listen to me, and approach Ephron
son of
Zohar on my behalf
And Ephron dwelt among the children of
Heth: and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the
audience of the children of
Heth, even of all that went in at the gate of his city, saying,
Now Ephron was sitting among the
sons of
Heth. So in the presence of all the
Hittites who had come to the gate of his city, Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham,
Nay, my lord, hear me: the field give I thee, and the cave that is therein, I give it thee; in the presence of the
sons of my people give I it thee:
bury thy dead.
“No, my lord.
Listen to me. I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. I give it to you in the presence of my people.
Bury your dead.”
And Abraham
hearkened unto Ephron; and Abraham
weighed to Ephron the silver, which he had named in the
audience of the
sons of
Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, current money with the merchant.
Abraham agreed to Ephron’s terms and
weighed out for him the price he had named in the hearing of the
Hittites: four hundred shekels of silver, according to the standard of the merchants.
And the field, and the cave that is therein, were made sure unto Abraham for a possession of a buryingplace by the
sons of
Heth.
So the field and its cave were deeded by the
Hittites to Abraham as a burial site.
And I will make thee
swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my
son of the daughters of the
Canaanites, among whom I dwell:
and I will have you
swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not take a wife for my
son from the daughters of the
Canaanites among whom I am dwelling,
But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac.
but will go to my country and my kindred to take a wife for my son Isaac.”
And the servant said unto him,
Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy
son again unto the land from whence thou camest?
The servant asked him, “What if the woman is unwilling to follow me to this land? Shall I then take your son back to the land from which you came?”
And Abraham said unto him,
Beware thou that thou bring not my
son thither again.
Abraham replied, “Make sure that you do not take my son back there.
The LORD God of heaven, which took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that
sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my
son from thence.
The LORD, the God of heaven, who brought me from my father’s house and my native land, who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give this land’—He will send His angel before you so that you can take a wife for my son from there.
And if the woman will not be willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath: only bring not my son thither again.
And if the woman is unwilling to follow you, then you are released from this oath of mine. Only do not take my son back there.”
