lad was with the
sons of
Bilhah, and with the
sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.
This is the account of Jacob. When Joseph was seventeen years old, he was tending the flock with his brothers, the
sons of his father’s wives
Bilhah and Zilpah, and he brought their father a bad report about them.
Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.
Now Israel loved Joseph more than his other
sons, because Joseph had been born to him in his old age; so he made him a
robe of many colors.
And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son’s coat or no.
They sent the
robe of many colors to their father and said, “We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your
son’s
robe or not.”
And he knew it, and said, It is my
son’s coat; an evil beast hath
devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.
His father recognized it and said, “It is my
son’s
robe! A
vicious animal has
devoured him. Joseph has surely been
torn to pieces!”
And Jacob rent his clothes, and put
sackcloth upon his loins, and

son mourning. Thus his father
wept for him.

Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father’s house, till Shelah my

And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.

buy corn among those that came: for the famine was in the land of

sons; we are true men, thy servants are no

sons of one man in the land of
Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.

And he said, My
son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief

son will not go down there with you, for his brother is dead, and he alone is left. If any
harm comes to him on your journey, you will bring my gray hair down to
Sheol in sorrow.”

buy us a little more food.”
And he lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother’s
son, and said, Is this your younger brother, of whom ye spake unto me? And he said, God be
gracious unto thee, my
son.

son, he asked, “Is this your youngest brother, the one you told me about?” Then he declared, “May God be
gracious to you, my
son.”
And we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him.

son Joseph, God hath made me lord of all Egypt: come down unto me,
tarry not:

And the children of Israel did so: and Joseph gave them wagons, according to the commandment of Pharaoh, and gave them provision for the way.

sons of Israel did as they were told. Joseph gave them wagons as Pharaoh had
instructed, and he also gave them provisions for their journey.
And Israel said, It is enough; Joseph my son is yet alive: I will go and see him before I die.

And the time drew
nigh that Israel must die: and he called his
son Joseph, and said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, put, I pray thee, thy hand under my
thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me;
bury me not, I pray thee, in Egypt:
When the time drew near for Israel to die, he called his
son Joseph and said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes, put your hand under my
thigh and promise to show me kindness and faithfulness. Do not
bury me in Egypt,
And it came to pass after these things, that one told Joseph, Behold, thy father is sick: and he took with him his two
sons,
Manasseh and Ephraim.
Some time later Joseph was told, “Your father is ill.” So he set out with his two
sons,
Manasseh and Ephraim.
And one told Jacob, and said, Behold, thy son Joseph cometh unto thee: and Israel strengthened himself, and sat upon the bed.
When Jacob was told, “Your
son Joseph has come to you,” Israel
rallied his strength and sat up in bed.
And now thy two
sons, Ephraim and
Manasseh, which were born unto thee in the land of Egypt before I came unto thee into Egypt, are mine; as
Reuben and
Simeon, they shall be mine.
And now your two
sons born to you in Egypt before I came to you here shall be reckoned as mine; Ephraim and
Manasseh shall be mine, just as
Reuben and
Simeon are mine.
And Israel
beheld Joseph’s
sons, and said, Who are these?
When Israel saw the sons of Joseph, he asked, “Who are these?”
And Joseph said unto his father, They are my
sons, whom God hath given me in this place. And he said, Bring them, I pray thee, unto me, and I will
bless them.
Joseph said to his father, “They are the
sons God has given me in this place.” So Jacob said, “Please bring them to me, that I may
bless them.”
Now the eyes of Israel were
dim for age, so that he could not see. And he brought them near unto him; and he
kissed them, and embraced them.
Now Israel’s
eyesight was poor because of old age; he could hardly see. Joseph brought his
sons to him, and his father
kissed them and embraced them.
And Joseph brought them out from between his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth.
Then Joseph removed his sons from his father’s knees and bowed facedown.
And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations.
But his father refused. “I know, my son, I know!” he said. “He too shall become a people, and he too shall be great; nevertheless, his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his offspring shall become a multitude of nations.”
And Jacob called unto his
sons, and said, Gather
yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall
befall you in the last days.
Then Jacob called for his sons and said, “Gather around so that I can tell you what will happen to you in the days to come:
Gather
yourselves together, and hear, ye
sons of Jacob; and
hearken unto Israel your father.
Come together and
listen, O
sons of Jacob;
listen to your father Israel.
Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise: thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy father’s children shall bow down before thee.
Judah, your brothers shall praise you. Your hand shall be on the necks of your enemies; your father’s sons shall bow down to you.
Judah is a lion’s
whelp: from the prey, my
son, thou art gone up: he
stooped down, he
couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall
rouse him up?
Judah is a young lion— my
son, you return from the prey. Like a lion he crouches and lies down; like a
lioness, who
dares to
rouse him?
And when Jacob had made an end of commanding his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and yielded up the ghost, and was gathered unto his people.
When Jacob had finished
instructing his
sons, he pulled his feet into the bed and breathed his last, and he was gathered to his people.
And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them:
So Jacob’s sons did as he had charged them.
For his
sons carried him into the land of
Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a buryingplace of Ephron the Hittite, before

Canaan and buried him in the cave at Machpelah in the field near

And Joseph saw Ephraim’s children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the
son Manasseh were brought up upon Joseph’s knees.

Manasseh were brought up on Joseph’s knees.
And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence.

And he said, When ye do the office of a
midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a
son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.
“When you help the Hebrew women give birth, observe them on the birthstools. If the child is a son, kill him; but if it is a daughter, let her live.”

son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she
hid him three months.
and she conceived and gave birth to a
son. When she saw that he was a beautiful child, she
hid him for three months.
And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water.
When the child had grown older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses and explained, “I drew him out of the water.”
And she bare him a son, and he called his name Gershom: for he said, I have been a stranger in a strange land.
And she gave birth to a son, and Moses named him Gershom, saying, “I have become a foreigner in a foreign land.”
But every woman shall
borrow of her neighbour, and of her that sojourneth in her house, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and
raiment: and ye shall put them upon your
sons, and upon your daughters; and ye shall
spoil the Egyptians.
Every woman shall ask her
neighbor and any woman staying in her house for silver and gold
jewelry and clothing, and you will put them on your
sons and daughters. So you will
plunder the Egyptians.”
And Moses took his wife and his
sons, and set them upon an
ass, and he returned to the land of Egypt: and Moses took the rod of God in his hand.
So Moses took his wife and
sons, put them on a
donkey, and headed back to Egypt. And he took the staff of God in his hand.
And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD, Israel is my
son, even my
firstborn:
Then tell Pharaoh that this is what the LORD says: ‘Israel is My
firstborn son,
And I say unto thee, Let my
son go, that he may serve me: and if thou refuse to let him go, behold, I will
slay thy
son, even thy
firstborn.
and I told you to let My
son go so that he may worship Me. But since you have refused to let him go, behold, I will kill your
firstborn son!’”
Then Zipporah took a sharp stone, and cut off the
foreskin of her
son, and cast it at his feet, and said, Surely a
bloody husband art thou to me.
But Zipporah took a flint knife, cut off her
son’s
foreskin, and touched it to Moses’ feet. “Surely you are a
bridegroom of blood to me,” she said.
