And
that they may recover themselves out of the
snare of the devil, who are taken
captive by him at his will.
Then they will come to their senses and escape the
snare of the devil, who has taken them
captive to his will.
This know also,
that in the last days
perilous times shall come.
But understand this: In the last days terrible times will come.
Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at
Iconium, at
Lystra; what persecutions I
endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me.
my persecutions, and the sufferings
that came upon me in Antioch,
Iconium, and
Lystra. What persecutions I
endured! Yet the Lord
rescued me from all of them.
Yea, and all
that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
Indeed, all who desire to live godly lives in Christ Jesus will be
persecuted,
And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
From infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
so
that the man of God may be complete, fully
equipped for every good work.
Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
From now on there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will
award to me on
that day—and not only to me, but to all who
crave His appearing.
The
cloke that I left at
Troas with
Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments.
When you come, bring the
cloak that I left with
Carpus at
Troas, and my scrolls, especially the parchments.
At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men
forsook me: I pray God
that it may not be laid to their charge.
At my first
defense, no one stood with me, but
everyone deserted me. May it not be charged against them.
Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.
But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message would be fully proclaimed, and all the Gentiles would hear it. So I was delivered from the mouth of the lion.
Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s
elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after
godliness;
Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ for the faith of God’s
elect and their knowledge of the truth
that leads to
godliness,
In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;
in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began.
For this cause left I thee in
Crete,
that thou shouldest set in order the things
that are wanting, and
ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:
The reason I left you in
Crete was
that you would set in order what was unfinished and
appoint elders in every town, as I directed you.
Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught,
that he may be able by sound doctrine both to
exhort and to
convince the gainsayers.
He must hold firmly to the faithful word as it was taught, so
that he can
encourage others by sound teaching and
refute those who
contradict it.
This witness is true. Wherefore
rebuke them sharply,
that they may be sound in the faith;
This testimony is true. Therefore
rebuke them sternly, so
that they will be sound in the faith
Not giving
heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men,
that turn from the truth.
and will pay no attention to Jewish myths or to the commands of men who have rejected the truth.
Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them
that are
defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is
defiled.
To the pure, all things are pure; but to the
defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure. Indeed, both their minds and their consciences are
defiled.
But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:
But as for you, speak the things that are consistent with sound doctrine.
That the aged men be
sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in
patience.
The aged women likewise,
that they be in behaviour as becometh
holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
Older women, likewise, are to be
reverent in their
behavior, not slanderers or
addicted to much wine, but teachers of good.
That they may teach the young women to be
sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
In this way they can train the young women to love their husbands and children,
to be self-
controlled, pure, managers of their households, kind, and
submissive to their own husbands, so
that the word of God will not be discredited.
Sound speech,
that cannot be condemned;
that he
that is of the contrary part may be
ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.
and
wholesome speech
that is above reproach, so
that anyone who opposes us will be
ashamed, having nothing bad to say about us.
not
stealing from them, but showing all good faith, so
that in every respect they will
adorn the teaching about God our
Savior.
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to
everyone.
Teaching us
that, denying
ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live
soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
It instructs us to
renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live sensible, upright, and godly lives in the present age,
Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
as we
await the blessed hope and glorious appearance of our great God and
Savior Jesus Christ.
Who gave himself for us,
that he might
redeem us from all iniquity, and
purify unto himself a peculiar people,
zealous of good works.
But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,
But when the kindness of God our
Savior and His love for mankind appeared,
That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
so that, having been justified by His grace, we would become heirs with the hope of eternal life.
This is a faithful saying, and these things I will
that thou
affirm constantly,
that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.
This saying is
trustworthy. And I want you to
emphasize these things, so
that those who have believed God will take care to
devote themselves to good deeds. These things are excellent and profitable for the people.
Knowing
that he
that is such is
subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.
knowing that such a man is corrupt and sinful; he is self-condemned.
Bring Zenas the
lawyer and Apollos on their journey
diligently,
that nothing be wanting unto them.
Do your best to
equip Zenas the
lawyer and Apollos, so
that they will have everything they need.
And let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful.
And our people must also learn to
devote themselves to good works in order to meet the pressing needs of others, so
that they will not be unfruitful.
All
that are with me
salute thee.
Greet them
that love us in the faith. Grace be with you all.
Amen.
All who are with me send you greetings.
Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with all of you.
And to our beloved Apphia, and Archippus our fellowsoldier, and to the church in thy house:
to Apphia our sister, to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church that meets at your house:
That the communication of thy faith may become
effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.
I pray
that your
partnership in the faith may become effective as you fully acknowledge every good thing
that is ours in Christ.
Wherefore, though I might be much bold in Christ to
enjoin thee
that which is convenient,
So although in Christ I am bold enough to order you to do what is proper,
Whom I have sent again: thou therefore receive him,
that is, mine own
bowels:
I am sending back to you him who is my very heart.
Whom I would have retained with me,
that in thy
stead he might have ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel:
I would have liked to keep him with me, so that on your behalf he could minister to me in my chains for the gospel.
But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.
But I did not want to do anything without your consent, so
that your goodness will not be out of
compulsion, but by your own free will.
For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever;
For perhaps this is why he was separated from you for a while, so that you might have him back for good—
If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account;
But if he has wronged you in any way or owes you anything, charge it to my account.
I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it:
albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides.
I, Paul, write this with my own hand. I will repay it—not to mention that you owe me your very self.
Having confidence in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing
that thou
wilt also do more than I say.
Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing
that you will do even more than I ask.
But
withal prepare me also a
lodging: for I trust
that through your prayers I shall be given unto you.
In the meantime, prepare a
guest room for me, because I hope
that through your prayers I will be restored to you.
Therefore we ought to give the more earnest
heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.
We must pay closer attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.
How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? This salvation was first
announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard Him,
For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come,
whereof we speak.
For it is not to angels that He has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking.
But one in a certain place
testified, saying, What is man,
that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man,
that thou visitest him?
But
somewhere it is
testified in these words: “What is man
that You are mindful of him, or the son of man
that You care for him?
Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.
and placed everything under his feet.” When God subjected all things to him, He left nothing outside of his control. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him.
But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because He suffered death, so
that by the grace of God He might taste death for
everyone.
For both he
that sanctifieth and they who are
sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not
ashamed to call them brethren,
For both the One who sanctifies and those who are
sanctified are of the same family. So Jesus is not
ashamed to call them brothers.
Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same;
that through death he might destroy him
that had the power of death,
that is, the devil;
Now since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity, so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death, that is, the devil,
Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren,
that he might be a
merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make
reconciliation for the sins of the people.
For this reason He had to be made like His brothers in every way, so
that He might become a
merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, in order to make
atonement for the sins of the people.
For in
that he himself hath suffered being
tempted, he is able to succour them
that are
tempted.
Because He Himself suffered when He was
tempted, He is able to help those who are being
tempted.
Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.
He was faithful to the One who appointed Him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house.
For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.
And every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything.
Wherefore I was
grieved with
that generation, and said, They do
alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.
Therefore I was
angry with
that generation, and I said, ‘Their hearts are always going
astray, and they have not known My ways.’
Take
heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
See to it, brothers, that none of you has a wicked heart of unbelief that turns away from the living God.
For some, when they had heard, did
provoke:
howbeit not all
that came out of Egypt by Moses.
For who were the ones who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt?
But with whom was he
grieved forty years? was it not with them
that had
sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness?
And with whom was God
angry for forty years? Was it not with those who
sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?
And to whom
sware he
that they should not enter into his rest, but to them
that believed not?
And to whom did He
swear that they would never enter His rest? Was it not to those who disobeyed?
So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
So we see that it was because of their unbelief that they were unable to enter.
Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.
Therefore, while the promise of entering His rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be deemed to have fallen short of it.
For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
For we also received the good news just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, since they did not share the faith of those who
comprehended it.
For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have
sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
Now we who have believed enter
that rest. As for the others, it is just as God has said: “So I
swore on oath in My anger, ‘They shall never enter My rest.’” And yet His works have been finished since the foundation of the world.
Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:
Since, then, it remains for some to enter His rest, and since those who formerly heard the good news did not enter because of their disobedience,
For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
For
whoever enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from His.
Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.
Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following the same pattern of disobedience.
Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.
Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight; everything is uncovered and exposed before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we
profess.
For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our
infirmities; but was in all points
tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to
sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who was
tempted in every way
that we are, yet was without sin.
Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:
Every high priest is appointed from among men to represent them in matters relating to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.
Who can have
compassion on the ignorant, and on them
that are out of the way; for
that he himself also is compassed with
infirmity.
He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and misguided, since he himself is
beset by weakness.
And by reason
hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins.
That is why he is
obligated to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people.
And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.
No one takes this honor upon himself; he must be called by God, just as Aaron was.
So also Christ
glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he
that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I
begotten thee.
So also Christ did not take upon Himself the glory of becoming a high priest, but He was called by the One who said to Him: “You are My Son;
today I have become Your Father.”
Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;
During the days of Jesus’ earthly life, He offered up prayers and petitions with loud
cries and tears to the One who could save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverence.
And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
And having been made perfect, He became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey Him
For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
Although by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to reteach you the
basic principles of God’s word. You need milk, not solid food!
For every one
that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a
babe.
For
everyone who lives on milk is still an infant, inexperienced in the message of righteousness.
But strong meat belongeth to them
that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to
discern both good and evil.
But solid food is for the
mature, who by constant use have trained their senses to distinguish good from evil.
For the earth which drinketh in the rain
that cometh
oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God:
For land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is tended receives the blessing of God.
But
that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is
nigh unto
cursing; whose end is to be burned.
But land
that produces thorns and thistles is worthless, and its
curse is
imminent. In the end it will be burned.
But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things
that accompany salvation, though we thus speak.
Even though we speak like this, beloved, we are
convinced of better things in your case—things
that accompany salvation.
For God is not unrighteous to
forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in
that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
For God is not unjust. He will not
forget your work and the love you have shown for His name as you have ministered to the saints and continue to do so.
And we desire
that every one of you do
shew the same
diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:
We want each of you to show this same
diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure.
That by two
immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong
consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:
Thus by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be strongly encouraged.
Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and
stedfast, and which entereth into
that within the
veil;
We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the
curtain,
To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after
that also King of
Salem, which is, King of peace;
and Abraham
apportioned to him a tenth of everything. First, his name means “king of righteousness.” Then also, “king of
Salem” means “king of peace.”
And
verily they
that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take
tithes of the people according to the law,
that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham:
Now the law commands the sons of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people—that is, from their brothers—though they too are descended from Abraham.
But he whose descent is not counted from them received
tithes of Abraham, and blessed him
that had the promises.
But
Melchizedek, who did not trace his descent from Levi, collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises.
And here men
that die receive
tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed
that he liveth.
