And the border was drawn thence, and compassed the corner of the sea southward, from the hill
that lieth before Beth-horon southward; and the goings out thereof were at Kirjath-
baal, which is Kirjath-jearim, a city of the children of Judah: this was the west quarter.
On the west side the border curved southward from the hill facing Beth-horon on the south and came out at Kiriath-
baal (
that is, Kiriath-jearim), a city of the sons of Judah. This was the western side.
And the border came down to the end of the mountain
that lieth before the valley of the son of
Hinnom, and which is in the valley of the giants on the north, and descended to the valley of
Hinnom, to the side of Jebusi on the south, and descended to En-rogel,
Then it went down to the foot of the hill
that faces the Valley of
Hinnom at the northern end of the Valley of
Rephaim and ran down the Valley of
Hinnom toward the southern slope of the Jebusites and
downward to En-rogel.
And Zelah, Eleph, and Jebusi, which is Jerusalem, Gibeath, and Kirjath; fourteen cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the children of Benjamin according to their families.
Zelah, Haeleph,
Jebus (
that is, Jerusalem), Gibeah, and Kiriath-jearim—fourteen cities, along with their villages. This was the inheritance of the clans of the tribe of Benjamin.
And all the villages
that were round about these cities to Baalath-beer, Ramath of the south. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of
Simeon according to their families.
and all the villages surrounding these cities as far as Baalath-beer (
Ramah of the Negev). This was the inheritance of the clans of the tribe of
Simeon.
And their border went up toward the sea, and Maralah, and reached to Dabbasheth, and reached to the river that is before Jokneam;
The border of their inheritance stretched as far as Sarid. It went up westward to Maralah, reached Dabbesheth, and met the
brook east of Jokneam.
These are the inheritances which
Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of
Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, divided for an inheritance by lot in
Shiloh before the LORD, at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. So they made an end of dividing the country.
These are the inheritances
that Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of
Nun, and the heads of the families distributed by lot to the tribes of Israel at
Shiloh before the LORD at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. So they finished dividing up the land.
And when he
that doth flee unto one of those cities shall stand at the entering of the gate of the city, and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of
that city, they shall take him into the city unto them, and give him a place,
that he may dwell among them.
When someone flees to one of these cities, stands at the entrance of the city gate, and states his case before its elders, they are to bring him into the city and give him a place to live among them.
Now if the
avenger of blood pursues him, they must not surrender the
manslayer into his hand, because
that man killed his
neighbor accidentally without prior
malice.
And he shall dwell in
that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the high priest
that shall be in those days: then shall the
slayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled.
He is to stay in
that city until he stands trial before the assembly and until the death of the high priest serving at
that time. Then the
manslayer may return to his own home in the city from which he fled.”
And they appointed Kedesh in
Galilee in mount
Naphtali, and
Shechem in mount Ephraim, and Kirjath-arba, which is
Hebron, in the mountain of Judah.
So they set apart Kedesh in
Galilee in the hill country of
Naphtali,
Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath-arba (
that is,
Hebron) in the hill country of Judah.
These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger
that sojourneth among them,
that whosoever killeth any person at unawares might
flee thither, and not die by the hand of the
avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation.
These are the cities appointed for all the Israelites and foreigners among them, so
that anyone who kills a person
unintentionally may
flee there and not die by the hand of the
avenger of blood prior to standing trial before the assembly.
And they spake unto them at
Shiloh in the land of
Canaan, saying, The LORD commanded by the hand of Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with the suburbs thereof for our cattle.
at
Shiloh in the land of
Canaan and said to them, “The LORD commanded through Moses
that we be given cities in which to live, together with pasturelands for our
livestock.”
And they gave them the city of Arba the father of
Anak, which city is
Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, with the suburbs thereof round about it.
They gave them Kiriath-arba (
that is,
Hebron), with its surrounding pasturelands, in the hill country of Judah. (Arba was the father of
Anak.)
All the cities were ten with their suburbs for the families of the children of
Kohath that remained.
In all, ten cities, together with their pasturelands, were given to the rest of the Kohathite clans.
And the LORD gave them rest round about, according to all
that he
sware unto their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.
And the LORD gave them rest on every side, just as He had
sworn to their fathers. None of their enemies could stand against them, for the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.
And said unto them, Ye have kept all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you:
and told them, “You have done all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and you have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you.
And now the LORD your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he promised them: therefore now return ye, and get you unto your tents, and unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the other side Jordan.
And now that the LORD your God has given your brothers rest as He promised them, you may return to your homes in the land that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you across the Jordan.
But take
diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to
cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.
But be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: to love the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, to keep His commandments, to hold fast to Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
And when they came unto the borders of Jordan,
that are in the land of
Canaan, the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the half tribe of
Manasseh built there an altar by Jordan, a great altar to see to.
And when they came to Geliloth near the Jordan in the land of
Canaan, the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh built an imposing altar there by the Jordan.
Thus saith the whole congregation of the LORD, What
trespass is this
that ye have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following the LORD, in
that ye have builded you an altar,
that ye might
rebel this day against the LORD?
“This is what the whole congregation of the LORD says: ‘What is this breach of faith you have committed
today against the God of Israel by turning away from the LORD and building for
yourselves an altar,
that you might
rebel against the LORD this day?
But
that ye must turn away this day from following the LORD? and it will be, seeing ye
rebel to day against the LORD,
that to
morrow he will be
wroth with the whole congregation of Israel.
And now, would you turn away from the LORD? If you
rebel today against the LORD,
tomorrow He will be
angry with the whole congregation of Israel.
Did not
Achan the son of Zerah commit a
trespass in the
accursed thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? and
that man perished not alone in his iniquity.
Was not
Achan son of Zerah unfaithful regarding what was set apart for destruction, bringing wrath upon the whole congregation of Israel? Yet it was not only
Achan who perished because of his sin!’”
That we have built us an altar to turn from following the LORD, or if to offer
thereon burnt offering or meat offering, or if to offer peace offerings
thereon, let the LORD himself require it;
If we have built for ourselves an altar to turn away from Him and to offer burnt offerings and grain offerings on it, or to sacrifice
fellowship offerings on it, may the LORD Himself hold us accountable.
And if we have not rather done it for fear of this thing, saying, In time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have ye to do with the LORD God of Israel?
But in fact we have done this for fear that in the future your descendants might say to ours, ‘What have you to do with the LORD, the God of Israel?
Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice:
That is why we said, ‘Let us take action and build an altar for ourselves, but not for burnt offerings or sacrifices.
But that it may be a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the LORD before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the LORD.
Rather, let it be a witness between us and you and the generations to come, that we will worship the LORD in His presence with our burnt offerings, sacrifices, and peace offerings.’ Then in the future, your descendants cannot say to ours, ‘You have no share in the LORD!’
Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say again, Behold the pattern of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between us and you.
Therefore we said, ‘If they ever say this to us or to our descendants, we will answer: Look at the
replica of the altar of the LORD
that our fathers made, not for burnt offerings or sacrifices, but as a witness between us and you.’
God
forbid that we should
rebel against the LORD, and turn this day from following the LORD, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for meat offerings, or for sacrifices, beside the altar of the LORD our God
that is before his tabernacle.
Far be it from us to
rebel against the LORD and turn away from Him
today by building an altar for burnt offerings, grain offerings, or sacrifices, other than the altar of the LORD our God, which stands before His tabernacle.”
And when
Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation and heads of the thousands of Israel which were with him, heard the words
that the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the children of
Manasseh spake, it pleased them.
When
Phinehas the priest and the chiefs of the congregation—the heads of Israel’s clans who were with him—heard what the descendants of
Reuben,
Gad, and
Manasseh had to say, they were satisfied.
And
Phinehas the son of
Eleazar the priest said unto the children of
Reuben, and to the children of
Gad, and to the children of
Manasseh, This day we perceive
that the LORD is among us, because ye have not committed this
trespass against the LORD: now ye have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the LORD.
Phinehas son of
Eleazar the priest said to the descendants of
Reuben,
Gad, and
Manasseh, “
Today we know
that the LORD is among us, because you have not committed this breach of faith against Him. Consequently, you have delivered the Israelites from the hand of the LORD.”
And the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad called the altar Ed: for it shall be a witness between us
that the LORD is God.
So the Reubenites and Gadites named the altar Witness, for they said, “It is a witness between us that the LORD is God.”
And it came to pass a long time after
that the LORD had given rest unto Israel from all their enemies round about,
that Joshua waxed old and
stricken in age.
A long time after the LORD had given Israel rest from all the enemies around them, when Joshua was old and well along in years,
And ye have seen all that the LORD your God hath done unto all these nations because of you; for the LORD your God is he that hath fought for you.
“and you have seen everything that the LORD your God has done to all these nations for your sake, because it was the LORD your God who fought for you.
Behold, I have divided unto you by lot these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, even unto the great sea westward.
See, I have
allotted as an inheritance to your tribes these remaining nations, including all the nations I have already cut off, from the Jordan westward to the Great Sea.
And the LORD your God, he shall
expel them from before you, and drive them from out of your sight; and ye shall possess their land, as the LORD your God hath promised unto you.
The LORD your God will
push them out of your way and drive them out before you, so
that you can take possession of their land, as the LORD your God promised you.
Be ye therefore very
courageous to keep and to do all
that is written in the book of the law of Moses,
that ye turn not aside
therefrom to the right hand or to the left;
Be very strong, then, so that you can keep and obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, not turning aside from it to the right or to the left.
That ye come not among these nations, these
that remain among you; neither make mention of the names of their gods, nor cause to
swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow
yourselves unto them:
So you are not to associate with these nations
that remain among you. You must not call on the names of their gods or
swear by them, and you must not serve them or bow down to them.
One man of you shall
chase a thousand: for the LORD your God, he it is
that fighteth for you, as he hath promised you.
One of you can put a thousand to flight, because the LORD your God fights for you, just as He promised.
Take good
heed therefore unto
yourselves,
that ye love the LORD your God.
Therefore watch
yourselves carefully,
that you love the LORD your God.
Else if ye do in any wise go back, and
cleave unto the
remnant of these nations, even these
that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you:
For if you turn away and
cling to the rest of these nations
that remain among you, and if you
intermarry and associate with them,
Know for a certainty
that the LORD your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and
traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.
know for sure
that the LORD your God will no longer drive out these nations before you. Instead, they will become for you a
snare and a
trap, a
scourge in your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land
that the LORD your God has given you.
And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof.
Now behold,
today I am going the way of all the earth, and you know with all your heart and soul
that not one of the good promises the LORD your God made to you has failed. Everything was fulfilled for you; not one promise has failed.
Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.
But just as every good thing the LORD your God promised you has come to pass, likewise the LORD will bring upon you the
calamity He has threatened, until He has destroyed you from this good land He has given you.
I sent Moses also and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did among them: and afterward I brought you out.
Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I
afflicted the Egyptians by what I did there, and afterward I brought you out.
And I brought you into the land of the
Amorites, which dwelt on the other side Jordan; and they fought with you: and I gave them into your hand,
that ye might possess their land; and I destroyed them from before you.
Later, I brought you to the land of the
Amorites who lived beyond the Jordan. They fought against you, but I delivered them into your hand,
that you should possess their land when I destroyed them before you.
And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat.
So I gave you a land on which you did not
toil and cities
that you did not build, and now you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves
that you did not plant.’
And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served
that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the
Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
But if it is unpleasing in your sight to serve the LORD, then choose for
yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the
Amorites in whose land you are living. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD!”
And the people answered and said, God
forbid that we should
forsake the LORD, to serve other gods;
The people replied, “Far be it from us to
forsake the LORD to serve other gods!
For the LORD our God, he it is
that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of
bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed:
For the LORD our God brought us and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and performed these great signs before our eyes. He also protected us throughout our journey and among all the nations through which we traveled.
If ye
forsake the LORD, and serve strange gods, then he will turn and do you
hurt, and
consume you, after
that he hath done you good.
If you
forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, He will turn and bring
disaster on you and
consume you, even after He has been good to you.”
And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against
yourselves that ye have chosen you the LORD, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses.
Then Joshua told them, “You are witnesses against
yourselves that you have chosen to serve the LORD.” “We are witnesses!” they said.
So Joshua made a covenant with the people
that day, and set them a statute and an
ordinance in
Shechem.
On
that day Joshua made a covenant for the people, and there at
Shechem he established for them a statute and
ordinance.
And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak, that was by the sanctuary of the LORD.
Joshua recorded these things in the Book of the Law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak that was near the sanctuary of the LORD.
And it came to pass after these things,
that Joshua the son of
Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old.
Some time later, Joshua son of
Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of 110.
And Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the LORD, that he had done for Israel.
Israel had served the LORD throughout the days of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had experienced all the works that the LORD had done for Israel.
And the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, buried they in
Shechem, in a
parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor the father of
Shechem for an hundred pieces of silver: and it became the inheritance of the children of Joseph.
And the bones of Joseph, which the Israelites had brought up out of Egypt, were buried at
Shechem in the plot of land
that Jacob had purchased from the sons of Hamor,
Shechem’s father, for a hundred pieces of silver. So it became an inheritance for Joseph’s descendants.
And
Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him in a hill
that pertained to
Phinehas his son, which was given him in mount Ephraim.
Eleazar son of Aaron also died, and they buried him at Gibeah, which had been given to his son
Phinehas in the hill country of Ephraim.
Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass,
that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the
Canaanites first, to fight against them?
After the death of Joshua, the Israelites inquired of the LORD, “Who will be the first to go up and fight for us against the
Canaanites?”
And Judah said unto
Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot,
that we may fight against the
Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So
Simeon went with him.
Then the men of Judah said to their brothers the Simeonites, “Come up with us to our
allotted territory, and let us fight against the
Canaanites. And we likewise will go with you to your territory.” So the Simeonites went with them.
And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the
Canaanites,
that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley.
Afterward, the men of Judah marched down to fight against the
Canaanites living in the hill country, in the Negev, and in the foothills.
And Judah went against the
Canaanites that dwelt in
Hebron: (now the name of
Hebron before was Kirjath-arba:) and they
slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.
Judah also marched against the
Canaanites who were living in
Hebron (formerly known as Kiriath-arba), and they struck down Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.
And
Caleb said, He
that smiteth Kirjath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.
And
Caleb said, “To the man who strikes down Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will give my daughter Acsah in marriage.”
And it came to pass, when she came to him,
that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her
ass; and
Caleb said unto her, What
wilt thou?
One day Acsah came to Othniel and urged him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her
donkey,
Caleb asked her, “What do you desire?”
And Judah went with
Simeon his brother, and they
slew the
Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.
Then the men of Judah went with their brothers the Simeonites, attacked the
Canaanites living in Zephath, and devoted the city to destruction. So it was called Hormah.
And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.
The Benjamites, however, failed to drive out the Jebusites living in Jerusalem. So to this day the Jebusites live there among the Benjamites.
And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they
smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.
So the man showed them the entrance to the city, and they put the city to the sword but released that man and all his family.
Neither did
Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of
Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of
Megiddo and her towns: but the
Canaanites would dwell in
that land.
At
that time
Manasseh failed to drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean, Taanach,
Dor, Ibleam,
Megiddo, and their villages; for the
Canaanites were determined to dwell in
that land.
And it came to pass, when Israel was strong,
that they put the
Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.
When Israel became stronger, they pressed the
Canaanites into forced labor, but they never drove them out completely.
But the
Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in
Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so
that they became tributaries.
And the
Amorites were determined to dwell in Mount Heres,
Aijalon, and Shaalbim. But when the house of Joseph grew in strength, they pressed the
Amorites into forced labor.
And an angel of the LORD came up from
Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I
sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.
Now the angel of the LORD went up from
Gilgal to Bochim and said, “I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land
that I had promised to your fathers, and I said, ‘I will never break My covenant with you,
Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a
snare unto you.
So now I tell you
that I will not drive out these people before you; they will be thorns in your sides, and their gods will be a
snare to you.”
And it came to pass, when the angel of the LORD spake these words unto all the children of Israel,
that the people lifted up their voice, and
wept.
When the angel of the LORD had spoken these words to all the Israelites, the people lifted up their voices and
wept.
And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto the LORD.
So they called that place Bochim and offered sacrifices there to the LORD.
And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the LORD, that he did for Israel.
And the people served the LORD throughout the days of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him, who had seen all the great works that the LORD had done for Israel.
And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.
After that whole generation had also been gathered to their fathers, another generation rose up who did not know the LORD or the works that He had done for Israel.
And they
forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people
that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and
provoked the LORD to anger.
Thus they
forsook the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and they followed after various gods of the peoples around them. They bowed down to them and
provoked the LORD to anger,
And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers
that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so
that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.
Then the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He delivered them into the hands of those who
plundered them. He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist.
Nevertheless the LORD raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those
that spoiled them.
Then the LORD raised up judges, who saved them from the hands of those who
plundered them.
And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it
repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them
that oppressed them and
vexed them.
Whenever the LORD raised up a judge for the Israelites, He was with
that judge and saved them from the hands of their enemies while the judge was still alive; for the LORD was moved to
pity by their
groaning under those who
oppressed them and
afflicted them.
And it came to pass, when the judge was dead,
that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their
stubborn way.
But when the judge died, the Israelites became even more corrupt than their fathers, going after other gods to serve them and bow down to them. They would not give up their evil practices and
stubborn ways.
And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel; and he said, Because
that this people hath
transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not
hearkened unto my voice;
So the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He said, “Because this nation has
transgressed the covenant I laid down for their fathers and has not
heeded My voice,
That through them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of the LORD to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.
In this way I will test whether Israel will keep the way of the LORD by walking in it as their fathers did.”
Therefore the LORD left those nations, without driving them out
hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.
That is why the LORD had left those nations in place and had not driven them out immediately by delivering them into the hand of Joshua.
Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of
Canaan;
These are the nations
that the LORD left to test all the Israelites who had not known any of the wars in
Canaan,
Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;
if only to teach warfare to the subsequent generations of Israel, especially to those who had not known it formerly:
And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.
After Ehud had finished presenting the tribute, he
ushered out those who had carried it.
But he himself turned again from the
quarries that were by
Gilgal, and said, I have a secret
errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all
that stood by him went out from him.
But upon reaching the idols near
Gilgal, he himself turned back and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” “Silence,” said the king, and all his attendants left him.
And the
haft also went in after the
blade; and the fat closed upon the
blade, so
that he could not draw the
dagger out of his
belly; and the
dirt came out.
When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.
After Ehud was gone,
Eglon’s servants came in and found the doors of the upper room locked. “He must be
relieving himself in the cool room,” they said.
And they
tarried till they were
ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.
So they waited until they became
worried and saw
