By reason of
the multitude of oppressions
they make
the oppressed to cry:
they cry out by reason of
the arm of
the mighty.
Men cry out under great oppression;
they plead for relief from
the arm of
the mighty.
But none saith, Where is God my maker, who giveth songs in the night;
But no one asks, ‘Where is God my Maker, who gives us songs in the night,
Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven?
who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth and makes us wiser than the birds of the air?’
There they cry, but none giveth answer, because of the pride of evil men.
There they cry out, but He does not answer, because of the pride of evil men.
Surely God will not hear vanity, neither will
the Almighty regard it.
Surely God does not
listen to empty pleas, and
the Almighty does not take note of it.
Although thou sayest thou shalt not see him, yet judgment is before him; therefore trust thou in him.
How much less, then, when you say that you do not see Him, that your case is before Him and you must wait for Him,
Therefore doth Job open his mouth in vain; he multiplieth words without knowledge.
So Job opens his mouth in vain and multiplies words without knowledge.”
Suffer me a little, and I will
shew thee that I have yet to speak on God’s behalf.
“Bear with me a little longer, and I will show you that there is more to be said on God’s behalf.
For truly my words shall not be false: he that is perfect in knowledge is with thee.
For truly my words are free of
falsehood; one perfect in knowledge is with you.
He preserveth not the life of the wicked: but giveth right to the poor.
He does not keep
the wicked alive, but He grants justice to
the afflicted.
He withdraweth not his eyes from
the righteous: but with kings are
they on
the throne;
yea, he
doth establish
them for ever, and
they are
exalted.
He does not take His eyes off
the righteous, but He enthrones
them with kings and exalts
them forever.
And if men are bound with chains, caught in cords of
affliction,
Then he sheweth them their work, and their transgressions that they have exceeded.
He openeth also their ear to discipline, and commandeth that they return from iniquity.
He opens their ears to correction and commands that they turn from iniquity.
If
they obey and serve him,
they shall
spend their days in prosperity, and
their years in pleasures.
If they obey and serve Him, then they end their days in prosperity and their years in happiness.
But if they obey not, they shall perish by the sword, and they shall die without knowledge.
But if they do not obey, then they perish by the sword and die without knowledge.
But
the hypocrites in heart
heap up wrath:
they cry not when he bindeth
them.
The godless in heart
harbor resentment; even when He binds
them,
they do not cry for help.
They die in youth, and their life is among the unclean.
They die in
their youth, among
the male
shrine prostitutes.
He delivereth
the poor in his
affliction, and openeth
their ears in oppression.
Even so would he have removed thee out of the strait into a broad place, where there is no straitness; and that which should be set on thy table should be full of fatness.
Indeed, He drew you from
the jaws of distress to a
spacious and broad place, to a table full of richness.
But thou hast fulfilled the judgment of the wicked: judgment and justice take hold on thee.
But now you are
laden with
the judgment due
the wicked; judgment and justice have seized you.
Because
there is wrath,
beware lest he take
thee away with his stroke:
then a great
ransom cannot deliver
thee.
Be careful that no one lures you with riches; do not let a large
bribe lead you
astray.
Will he esteem thy riches? no, not gold, nor all the forces of strength.
Can your wealth or all your mighty effort keep you from distress?
Desire not the night, when people are cut off in their place.
Do not long for
the night, when people
vanish from
their homes.
Behold, God is great, and we know him not, neither can the number of his years be searched out.
Indeed, God is great—beyond our knowledge; the number of His years is unsearchable.
For he maketh small the drops of water: they pour down rain according to the vapour thereof:
For He draws up drops of water which distill
the rain from
the mist,
Which
the clouds do drop and
distil upon man abundantly.
which the clouds pour out and shower abundantly on mankind.
Also can any understand the spreadings of the clouds, or the noise of his tabernacle?
Behold, he spreadeth his light upon it, and covereth the bottom of the sea.
See how He scatters His
lightning around Him and covers
the depths of
the sea.
For by them judgeth he the people; he giveth meat in abundance.
For by these He judges the nations and provides food in abundance.
With clouds he covereth
the light; and commandeth it not to
shine by
the cloud that cometh
betwixt.
He fills His hands with
lightning and commands it to strike its mark.
The noise thereof sheweth concerning it, the cattle also concerning the vapour.
The thunder declares His presence; even
the cattle regard
the rising storm.
Hear
attentively the noise of his voice, and
the sound that goeth out of his mouth.
He directeth it under
the whole heaven, and his
lightning unto
the ends of
the earth.
He unleashes His
lightning beneath
the whole sky and sends it to
the ends of
the earth.
After it a voice roareth: he thundereth with
the voice of his
excellency; and he will not stay
them when his voice is heard.
Then there comes a
roaring sound; He thunders with His
majestic voice. He does not restrain
the lightning when His voice resounds.
For he saith to the snow, Be thou on the earth; likewise to the small rain, and to the great rain of his strength.
For He says to
the snow, ‘Fall on
the earth,’ and to
the gentle rain, ‘Pour out a mighty
downpour.’
He sealeth up the hand of every man; that all men may know his work.
He seals up the hand of every man, so that all men may know His work.
Then the beasts go into dens, and remain in their places.
The wild animals enter their lairs; they settle down in their dens.
Out of
the south cometh
the whirlwind: and cold out of
the north.
The tempest comes from its chamber, and
the cold from
the driving north winds.
By
the breath of God
frost is given: and
the breadth of
the waters is
straitened.
By
the breath of God
the ice is formed and
the watery expanses are
frozen.
Also by watering he wearieth the thick cloud: he scattereth his bright cloud:
He loads
the clouds with moisture; He scatters His
lightning through
them.
And it is turned round about by his counsels: that
they may do
whatsoever he commandeth
them upon
the face of
the world in
the earth.
Hearken unto this, O Job: stand still, and consider
the wondrous works of God.
Listen to this, O Job; stand still and consider
the wonders of God.
Dost thou know when God disposed
them, and caused
the light of his cloud to
shine?
Do you know how God dispatches
the clouds or makes
the lightning flash?
Dost thou know
the balancings of
the clouds,
the wondrous works of him which is perfect in knowledge?
Do you understand how
the clouds
float, those wonders of Him who is perfect in knowledge?
How thy garments are warm, when he quieteth the earth by the south wind?
You whose clothes get hot when
the land lies
hushed under
the south wind,
Hast thou with him spread out
the sky, which is strong, and as a
molten looking glass?
can you, like Him, spread out
the skies to
reflect the heat like a mirror of bronze?
And now men see not the bright light which is in the clouds: but the wind passeth, and cleanseth them.
Now no one can
gaze at
the sun when it is bright in
the skies after
the wind has swept
them clean.
Fair weather cometh out of the north: with God is terrible majesty.
Out of
the north He comes in golden
splendor;
awesome majesty surrounds Him.
Touching
the Almighty, we cannot find him out: he is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in
plenty of justice: he will not
afflict.
The Almighty is beyond our reach; He is
exalted in power! In His justice and great righteousness He does not
oppress.
Men do therefore fear him: he respecteth not any that are wise of heart.
Therefore, men fear Him, for He is not partial to the wise in heart.”
Then the LORD answered Job out of
the whirlwind, and said,
Then the LORD answered Job out of
the whirlwind and said:
Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of
thee, and answer thou me.
Now
brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall inform Me.
Where
wast thou when I laid
the foundations of
the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding.
Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?
Who fixed its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched a measuring line across it?
Whereupon are
the foundations
thereof fastened? or who laid
the corner stone
thereof;
On what were its foundations set, or who laid its cornerstone,
When
the morning stars
sang together, and all
the sons of God
shouted for joy?
while
the morning stars
sang together and all
the sons of God
shouted for joy?
Or who shut up
the sea with doors, when it
brake forth, as if it had issued out of
the womb?
Who enclosed
the sea behind doors when it
burst forth from
the womb,
When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,
when I made
the clouds its garment and thick darkness its
blanket,
Hast thou commanded
the morning since thy days; and caused
the dayspring to know his place;
In your days, have you commanded
the morning or assigned
the dawn its place,
That it might take hold of
the ends of
the earth, that
the wicked might be
shaken out of it?
that it might spread to
the ends of
the earth and
shake the wicked out of it?
It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.
The earth takes shape like clay under a seal; its hills stand out like the folds of a garment.
And from
the wicked
their light is
withholden, and
the high arm shall be broken.
Light is
withheld from
the wicked, and
their upraised arm is broken.
Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?
Have you journeyed to the vents of the sea or walked in the trenches of the deep?
Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death?
Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?
Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.
Have you surveyed the extent of the earth? Tell Me, if you know all this.
Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof,
Where is the way to the home of light? Do you know where darkness resides,
That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?
so you can lead it back to its border? Do you know the paths to its home?
Knowest thou it, because thou
wast then born? or because
the number of thy days is great?
Surely you know, for you were already born! And the number of your days is great!
Hast thou entered into
the treasures of
the snow? or hast thou seen
the treasures of
the hail,
Have you entered
the storehouses of snow or observed
the storehouses of
hail,
Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?
which I hold in reserve for times of trouble, for the day of war and battle?
By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east wind upon the earth?
Who hath divided a watercourse for
the overflowing of waters, or a way for
the lightning of
thunder;
Who cuts a channel for
the flood or clears a path for
the thunderbolt,
To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;
to bring rain on a barren land, on a desert where no man lives,
To satisfy
the desolate and waste ground; and to cause
the bud of
the tender
herb to spring forth?
to satisfy
the parched wasteland and make it
sprout with tender grass?
Hath
the rain a father? or who hath
begotten the drops of
dew?
Does
the rain have a father? Who has
begotten the drops of
dew?
From whose
womb does
the ice
emerge? Who gives birth to
the frost from heaven,
The waters are
hid as with a stone, and
the face of
the deep is
frozen.
when
the waters become hard as stone and
the surface of
the deep is
frozen?
Canst thou bind
the sweet influences of
Pleiades, or loose
the bands of
Orion?
Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide
Arcturus with his sons?
Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons or lead out the Bear and her cubs?
Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?
Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you set their dominion over the earth?
Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?
Can you command the clouds so that a flood of water covers you?
Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are?
Can you send
the lightning bolts on
their way? Do
they report to you, ‘Here we are’?
Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?
Who has put wisdom in the heart or given understanding to the mind?
Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven,
Who has
the wisdom to count
the clouds? Or who can
tilt the water jars of
the heavens
When
the dust groweth into hardness, and
the clods
cleave fast together?
when the dust hardens into a mass and the clods of earth stick together?
Can you
hunt the prey for a
lioness or satisfy
the hunger of young lions
Who provideth for
the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God,
they wander for lack of meat.
Who provides food for
the raven when its young cry out to God as
they wander about for lack of food?
Knowest thou
the time when
the wild goats of
the rock bring forth? or canst thou mark when
the hinds do
calve?
“Do you know when mountain goats give birth? Have you watched
the doe bear her
fawn?
Canst thou number the months that they fulfil? or knowest thou the time when they bring forth?
Can you count
the months
they are
pregnant? Do you know
the time
they give birth?
They bow themselves, they bring forth their young ones, they cast out their sorrows.
They crouch down and bring forth
their young;
they deliver
their newborn.
Their young ones are in good liking, they grow up with corn; they go forth, and return not unto them.
Their young ones
thrive and grow up in
the open field;
they leave and do not return.
Who hath sent out
the wild
ass free? or who hath loosed
the bands of
the wild
ass?
Whose house I have made the wilderness, and the barren land his dwellings.
I made the wilderness his home and the salt flats his dwelling.
He scorneth the multitude of the city, neither regardeth he the crying of the driver.
He scorns
the tumult of
the city and never hears
the shouts of a driver.
The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searcheth after every green thing.
He roams the mountains for pasture, searching for any green thing.
Will
the wild ox consent to serve you? Will he stay by your
manger at night?
Canst thou bind
the unicorn with his band in
the furrow? or will he
harrow the valleys after
thee?
Gavest thou
the goodly wings unto
the peacocks? or wings and feathers unto
the ostrich?
