Then
Joab came to the king, and said, What hast thou done? behold,
Abner came unto
thee; why is it that thou hast sent him away, and he is quite gone?
So
Joab went to the king and said, “What have you done? Look,
Abner came to you. Why did you dismiss him? Now he is getting away!
Thou knowest
Abner the son of
Ner, that he came to
deceive thee, and to know thy going out and thy coming in, and to know all that thou doest.
Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, thou
wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD said to
thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captain over Israel.
Even in times past, while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel out and brought them back. And to you the LORD said, ‘You will
shepherd My people Israel, and you will be ruler over them.’”
And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the
mulberry trees, that then thou shalt
bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go out before
thee, to
smite the host of the Philistines.
As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the
balsam trees, move quickly, because this will mean that the LORD has marched out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.”
And
Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in thine heart; for the LORD is with
thee.
And
Nathan replied to the king, “Go and do all that is in your heart, for the LORD is with you.”
Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took
thee from the
sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel:
Now then, you are to tell My servant David that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to be the ruler over My people Israel.
And I was with
thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made
thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth.
I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make for you a name like the greatest in the land.
And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee an house.
and have done since the day I appointed judges over My people Israel. I will give you rest from all your enemies. The LORD declares to you that He Himself will establish a house for you.
And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after
thee, which shall proceed out of thy
bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.
And when your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your
descendant after you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom.
But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.
But My loving devotion will never be removed from him as I removed it from Saul, whom I moved out of your way.
And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.
And what can David say more unto thee? for thou, Lord GOD, knowest thy servant.
What more can David say to You? For You know Your servant, O Lord GOD.
Wherefore thou art great, O LORD God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
How great You are, O Lord GOD! For there is none like You, and there is no God but You, according to everything we have heard with our own ears.
And what one nation in the earth is like thy people, even like Israel, whom God went to
redeem for a people to himself, and to make him a name, and to do for you great things and terrible, for thy land, before thy people, which thou redeemedst to
thee from Egypt, from the nations and their gods?
And who is like Your people Israel—the one nation on earth whom God went out to
redeem as a people for Himself and to make a name for Himself? You performed great and
awesome wonders by driving out nations and their gods from before Your people, whom You redeemed for
Yourself from Egypt.
For thou hast confirmed to
thyself thy people Israel to be a people unto
thee for ever: and thou, LORD, art become their God.
For You have established Your people Israel as Your very own
forever, and You, O LORD, have become their God.
And let thy name be
magnified for ever, saying, The LORD of hosts is the God over Israel: and let the house of thy servant David be established before
thee.
so that Your name will be
magnified forever when it is said, ‘The LORD of Hosts is God over Israel.’ And the house of Your servant David will be established before You.
For thou, O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, hast revealed to thy servant, saying, I will build thee an house: therefore hath thy servant found in his heart to pray this prayer unto thee.
For You, O LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, have revealed this to Your servant when You said, ‘I will build a house for you.’ Therefore Your servant has found the courage to offer this prayer to You.
Therefore now let it please
thee to
bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before
thee: for thou, O Lord GOD, hast spoken it: and with thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed for ever.
Now therefore, may it please You to
bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue
forever before You. For You, O Lord GOD, have spoken, and with Your blessing the house of Your servant will be blessed
forever.”
And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely
shew thee kindness for
Jonathan thy father’s sake, and will restore
thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.
“Do not be afraid,” said David, “for surely I will show you kindness for the sake of your father
Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land of your
grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.”
And the princes of the children of
Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David
doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto
thee? hath not David rather sent his servants unto
thee, to search the city, and to
spy it out, and to overthrow it?
the princes of the
Ammonites said to Hanun their lord, “Just because David has sent you comforters, do you really believe he is showing respect for your father? Has not David instead sent his servants to
explore the city,
spy it out, and overthrow it?”
And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of
Ammon be too strong for
thee, then I will come and help
thee.
“If the Arameans are too strong for me,” said
Joab, “then you will come to my
rescue. And if the
Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come to your
rescue.
And David said to Uriah,
Tarry here to day also, and to
morrow I will let
thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the
morrow.
“Stay here one more day,” David said to Uriah, “and
tomorrow I will send you back.” So Uriah stayed in Jerusalem that day and the next.
And if so be that the king’s wrath arise, and he say unto
thee, Wherefore approached ye so
nigh unto the city when ye did fight? knew ye not that they would shoot from the wall?
if the king’s anger flares, he may ask you, ‘Why did you get so close to the city to fight? Did you not
realize they would shoot from
atop the wall?
Then David said unto the
messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto
Joab, Let not this thing displease
thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another: make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and
encourage thou him.
And
Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I
anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered
thee out of the hand of Saul;
Then
Nathan said to David, “You are that man! This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I
anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul.
And I gave
thee thy master’s house, and thy master’s wives into thy
bosom, and gave
thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto
thee such and such things.
I gave your master’s house to you and your master’s wives into your arms. I gave you the house of Israel and Judah, and if that was not enough, I would have given you even more.
Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.
This is what the LORD says: ‘I will raise up
adversity against you from your own house. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to another, and he will lie with them in broad
daylight.
Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to
blaspheme, the child also that is born unto
thee shall surely die.
Nevertheless, because by this deed you have shown utter contempt for the word of the LORD, the son born to you will surely die.”
And Jonadab said unto him, Lay
thee down on thy bed, and make
thyself sick: and when thy father cometh to see
thee, say unto him, I pray
thee, let my sister Tamar come, and give me meat, and dress the meat in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it at her hand.
Jonadab told him, “Lie down on your bed and pretend you are ill. When your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘Please let my sister Tamar come and give me something to eat. Let her prepare it in my sight so I may watch her and eat it from her hand.’”
So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick: and when the king was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, I pray thee, let Tamar my sister come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat at her hand.
So Amnon lay down and
feigned illness. When the king came to see him, Amnon said, “Please let my sister Tamar come and make a couple of cakes in my sight, so that I may eat from her hand.”
And I,
whither shall I cause my shame to go? and as for
thee, thou shalt be as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, I pray
thee, speak unto the king; for he will not
withhold me from
thee.
Where could I ever take my shame? And you would be like one of the fools in Israel! Please speak to the king, for he will not
withhold me from you.”
And
Absalom her brother said unto her, Hath Amnon thy brother been with
thee? but hold now thy peace, my sister: he is thy brother; regard not this thing. So Tamar remained
desolate in her brother
Absalom’s house.
Her brother
Absalom said to her, “Has your brother Amnon been with you? Be quiet for now, my sister. He is your brother. Do not take this thing to heart.” So Tamar lived as a
desolate woman in the house of her brother
Absalom.
And
Absalom came to the king, and said, Behold now, thy servant hath sheepshearers; let the king, I
beseech thee, and his servants go with thy servant.
And he went to the king and said, “Your servant has just
hired shearers. Will the king and his servants please come with me?”
And the king said to
Absalom,
Nay, my son, let us not all now go, lest we be chargeable unto
thee. And he pressed him:
howbeit he would not go, but blessed him.
“No, my son,” the king replied, “we should not all go, or we would be a burden to you.” Although
Absalom urged him, he was not willing to go, but gave him his blessing.
Then said
Absalom, If not, I pray
thee, let my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said unto him, Why should he go with
thee?
“If not,” said
Absalom, “please let my brother Amnon go with us.” “Why should he go with you?” the king asked.
So
Joab sent to Tekoa to bring a wise woman from there. He told her, “Please pretend to be a
mourner; put on clothes for
mourning and do not
anoint yourself with oil. Act like a woman who has
mourned for the dead a long time.
And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, I am indeed a widow woman, and mine husband is dead.
“What troubles you?” the king asked her. “Indeed,” she said, “I am a widow, for my husband is dead.
And the king said unto the woman, Go to thine house, and I will give charge concerning thee.
“Go home,” the king said to the woman, “and I will give orders on your behalf.”
And the king said,
Whosoever saith ought unto
thee, bring him to me, and he shall not touch
thee any more.
“If
anyone speaks to you,” said the king, “bring him to me, and he will not trouble you again!”
Then said she, I pray thee, let the king remember the LORD thy God, that thou wouldest not suffer the revengers of blood to destroy any more, lest they destroy my son. And he said, As the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth.
“Please,” she replied, “may the king
invoke the LORD your God to prevent the
avenger of blood from increasing the
devastation, so that my son may not be destroyed!” “As surely as the LORD lives,” he
vowed, “not a hair of your son’s head will fall to the ground.”
Then the woman said, Let thine
handmaid, I pray
thee, speak one word unto my lord the king. And he said, Say on.
Then the woman said, “Please, may your servant speak a word to my lord the king?” “Speak,” he replied.
Then thine
handmaid said, The word of my lord the king shall now be comfortable: for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to
discern good and bad: therefore the LORD thy God will be with
thee.
And now your servant says, ‘May the word of my lord the king bring me rest, for my lord the king is able to
discern good and evil, just like the angel of God. May the LORD your God be with you.’”
Then the king answered and said unto the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, the thing that I shall ask thee. And the woman said, Let my lord the king now speak.
Then the king said to the woman, “I am going to ask you something; do not
conceal it from me!” “Let my lord the king speak,” she replied.
And the king said, Is not the hand of
Joab with
thee in all this? And the woman answered and said, As thy soul liveth, my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from ought that my lord the king hath spoken: for thy servant
Joab, he
bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of thine
handmaid:
So the king asked, “Is the hand of
Joab behind all this?” The woman answered, “As surely as you live, my lord the king, no one can turn to the right or to the left from anything that my lord the king says.
Yes, your servant
Joab is the one who gave me orders; he told your
maidservant exactly what to say.
And
Absalom answered
Joab, Behold, I sent unto
thee, saying, Come
hither, that I may send
thee to the king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it had been good for me to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king’s face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me.
“Look,” said
Absalom, “I sent for you and said, ‘Come here. I want to send you to the king to ask: Why have I come back from Geshur? It would be better for me if I were still there.’ So now, let me see the king’s face, and if there is iniquity in me, let him kill me.”
And
Absalom said unto him, See, thy matters are good and right; but there is no man
deputed of the king to hear
thee.
Absalom would say, “Look, your claims are good and right, but the king has no deputy to hear you.”
And it came to pass after forty years, that
Absalom said unto the king, I pray
thee, let me go and pay my
vow, which I have
vowed unto the LORD, in
Hebron.
After four years had passed,
Absalom said to the king, “Please let me go to
Hebron to
fulfill a
vow I have made to the LORD.
Whereas thou camest but
yesterday, should I this day make
thee go up and down with us? seeing I go
whither I may, return thou, and take back thy brethren: mercy and truth be with
thee.
In fact, you arrived only
yesterday; should I make you
wander around with us
today while I do not know where I am going? Go back and take your brothers with you. May the LORD show you loving devotion and faithfulness.”
But if he thus say, I have no delight in thee; behold, here am I, let him do to me as seemeth good unto him.
But if He should say, ‘I do not delight in you,’ then here I am; let Him do to me whatever seems good to Him.”
And hast thou not there with
thee Zadok and
Abiathar the priests? therefore it shall be, that what thing
soever thou shalt hear out of the king’s house, thou shalt tell it to
Zadok and
Abiathar the priests.
Will not
Zadok and
Abiathar the priests be there with you? Report to them everything you hear from the king’s palace.
Then said the king to Ziba, Behold, thine are all that
pertained unto Mephibosheth. And Ziba said, I
humbly beseech thee that I may find grace in thy sight, my lord, O king.
So the king said to Ziba, “All that belongs to Mephibosheth is now yours!” “I
humbly bow before you,” said Ziba. “May I find favor in your eyes, my lord the king!”
The LORD hath returned upon
thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose
stead thou hast reigned; and the LORD hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of
Absalom thy son: and, behold, thou art taken in thy mischief, because thou art a
bloody man.
The LORD has paid you back for all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose place you have reigned, and the LORD has delivered the kingdom into the hand of your son
Absalom. See, you have come to ruin because you are a man of
bloodshed!”
Then said
Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king, Why should this dead dog
curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray
thee, and take off his head.
Then
Abishai son of Zeruiah said to the king, “Why should this dead dog
curse my lord the king? Let me go over and cut off his head!”
And
Ahithophel said unto
Absalom, Go in unto thy father’s concubines, which he hath left to keep the house; and all Israel shall hear that thou art
abhorred of thy father: then shall the hands of all that are with
thee be strong.
Ahithophel replied, “Sleep with your father’s concubines, whom he has left to keep the palace. When all Israel hears that you have become a
stench to your father, then the hands of all who are with you will be strengthened.”
And I will bring back all the people unto thee: the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned: so all the people shall be in peace.
and bring all the people back to you as a
bride returning to her husband. You seek the life of only one man; then all the people will be at peace.”
Therefore I counsel that all Israel be generally gathered unto
thee, from
Dan even to Beer-
sheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person.
And
Joab said unto the man that told him, And, behold, thou sawest him, and why
didst thou not
smite him there to the ground? and I would have given
thee ten shekels of silver, and a
girdle.
“You just saw him!”
Joab exclaimed. “Why did you not strike him to the ground right there? I would have given you ten shekels of silver and a
warrior’s belt!”
And the man said unto
Joab, Though I should receive a thousand shekels of silver in mine hand, yet would I not put forth mine hand against the king’s son: for in our hearing the king charged
thee and
Abishai and Ittai, saying,
Beware that none touch the young man
Absalom.
The man replied, “Even if a thousand shekels of silver were
weighed out into my hands, I would not raise my hand against the son of the king. For we heard the king command you and
Abishai and Ittai, ‘Protect the young man
Absalom for my sake.’
Then said
Joab, I may not
tarry thus with
thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of
Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.
But
Joab declared, “I am not going to wait like this with you!” And he took three spears in his hand and thrust them through the heart of
Absalom while he was still alive in the oak tree.
Ahimaaz son of
Zadok, however,
persisted and said to
Joab, “Regardless of whatever may happen, please let me also run behind the
Cushite!” “My son,”
Joab replied, “why do you want to run, since you will not receive a reward?”
And, behold, Cushi came; and Cushi said,
Tidings, my lord the king: for the LORD hath
avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against
thee.
Just then the
Cushite came and said, “May my lord the king hear the good news:
Today the LORD has
avenged you of all who rose up against you!”
And the king said unto Cushi, Is the young man
Absalom safe? And Cushi answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise against
thee to do
thee hurt, be as that young man is.
The king asked the
Cushite, “Is the young man
Absalom all right?” And the
Cushite replied, “May what has become of the young man happen to the enemies of my lord the king and to all who rise up against you to
harm you.”
And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and
wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son
Absalom, my son, my son
Absalom! would God I had died for
thee, O
Absalom, my son, my son!
The king was
shaken and went up to the gate chamber and
wept. And as he walked, he
cried out, “O my son
Absalom! My son, my son
Absalom! If only I had died instead of you, O
Absalom, my son, my son!”
In that thou lovest thine enemies, and hatest thy friends. For thou hast declared this day, that thou regardest neither princes nor servants: for this day I perceive, that if
Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it had pleased
thee well.
You love those who
hate you and
hate those who love you! For you have made it clear
today that the commanders and soldiers mean nothing to you. I know
today that if
Absalom were alive and all of us were dead, it would have pleased you!
Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak
comfortably unto thy servants: for I
swear by the LORD, if thou go not forth, there will not
tarry one with
thee this night: and that will be worse unto
thee than all the evil that
befell thee from thy youth until now.
Now therefore get up! Go out and speak comfort to your servants, for I
swear by the LORD that if you do not go out, not a man will remain with you
tonight. This will be worse for you than all the
adversity that has
befallen you from your youth until now!”
And the king said unto Barzillai, Come thou over with me, and I will feed thee with me in Jerusalem.
The king said to Barzillai, “Cross over with me, and I will provide for you at my side in Jerusalem.”
Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in mine own city, and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good unto thee.
Please let your servant return, that I may die in my own city near the tomb of my father and mother. But here is your servant Chimham. Let him cross over with my lord the king, and do for him what is good in your sight.”
And the king answered, Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good unto
thee: and
whatsoever thou shalt require of me, that will I do for
thee.
The king replied, “Chimham will cross over with me, and I will do for him what seems good in your sight, and I will do for you whatever you desire of me.”
And, behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said unto the king, Why have our brethren the men of Judah
stolen thee away, and have brought the king, and his household, and all David’s men with him, over Jordan?
Soon all the men of Israel came to the king and asked, “Why did our brothers, the men of Judah, take you away secretly and bring the king and his household across the Jordan, together with all of David’s men?”
Then
cried a wise woman out of the city, Hear, hear; say, I pray you, unto
Joab, Come near
hither, that I may speak with
thee.
a wise woman called out from the city, “
Listen!
Listen! Please tell
Joab to come here so that I may speak with him.”
The matter is not so: but a man of mount Ephraim,
Sheba the son of Bichri by name, hath lifted up his hand against the king, even against David: deliver him only, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said unto
Joab, Behold, his head shall be thrown to
thee over the wall.
That is not the case. But a man named
Sheba son of Bichri, from the hill country of Ephraim, has lifted up his hand against the king, against David. Deliver him alone, and I will depart from the city.” “Look,” the woman replied, “his head will be thrown to you over the wall.”
For by
thee I have run through a
troop: by my God have I
leaped over a wall.
For in You I can charge an army; with my God I can scale a wall.
Therefore I will give
thanks unto
thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name.
Therefore I will praise You, O LORD, among the nations; I will sing praises to Your name.
And David’s heart
smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the LORD, I have
sinned greatly in that I have done: and now, I
beseech thee, O LORD, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very
foolishly.
After David had numbered the troops, his conscience was
stricken and he said to the LORD, “I have
sinned greatly in what I have done. Now, O LORD, I
beg You to take away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have acted very
foolishly.”
Go and say unto David, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.
“Go and tell David that this is what the LORD says: ‘I am offering you three options. Choose one of them, and I will carry it out against you.’”
So
Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto
thee in thy land? or
wilt thou
flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue
thee? or that there be three days’
pestilence in thy land? now
advise, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.
So
Gad went and said to David, “Do you choose to
endure three years of famine in your land, three months of
fleeing the pursuit of your enemies, or three days of plague upon your land? Now then, think it over and decide how I should reply to Him who sent me.”
And David spake unto the LORD when he saw the angel that
smote the people, and said, Lo, I have
sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray
thee, be against me, and against my father’s house.
When David saw the angel striking down the people, he said to the LORD, “Surely I, the
shepherd, have
sinned and acted wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? Please, let Your hand fall upon me and my father’s house.”
And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To
buy the threshingfloor of
thee, to build an altar unto the LORD, that the plague may be stayed from the people.
“Why has my lord the king come to his servant?” Araunah said. “To
buy your
threshing floor,” David replied, “that I may build an altar to the LORD, so that the plague upon the people may be
halted.”
All these things did Araunah, as a king, give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king, The LORD thy God accept thee.
O king, Araunah gives all these to the king.” He also said to the king, “May the LORD your God accept you.”
And the king said unto Araunah,
Nay; but I will surely
buy it of
thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the LORD my God of that which
doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.
“No,” replied the king, “I
insist on paying a price, for I will not offer to the LORD my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” So David bought the
threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.
Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son Solomon.
Now please, come and let me
advise you. Save your own life and the life of your son Solomon.
Go and get
thee in unto king David, and say unto him,
Didst not thou, my lord, O king,
swear unto thine
handmaid, saying,
Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then
doth Adonijah reign?
Go at once to King David and say, ‘My lord the king, did you not
swear to your
maidservant, “Surely your son Solomon will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne”? Why then has Adonijah become king?’
Behold, while thou yet talkest there with the king, I also will come in after
thee, and
confirm thy words.
Then, while you are still there speaking with the king, I will come in after you and
confirm your words.”
And thou, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel are upon thee, that thou shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
And as for you, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are upon you to tell them who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
Even as I
sware unto
thee by the LORD God of Israel, saying,
Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my
stead; even so will I certainly do this day.
I will carry out this very day exactly what I
swore to you by the LORD, the God of Israel: Surely your son Solomon will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne in my place.”
That the LORD may continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take
heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail
thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel.
and so that the LORD may
fulfill His promise to me: ‘If your descendants take
heed to walk faithfully before Me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.’
And, behold, thou hast with
thee Shimei the son of
Gera, a
Benjamite of Bahurim, which
cursed me with a
grievous curse in the day when I went to
Mahanaim: but he came down to meet me at Jordan, and I
sware to him by the LORD, saying, I will not put
thee to death with the sword.
Keep an eye on Shimei the son of
Gera, the
Benjamite from Bahurim who is with you. He called down bitter curses against me on the day I went to
Mahanaim, but when he came down to meet me at the Jordan, I
swore to him by the LORD: ‘I will never put you to the sword.’
He said moreover, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And she said, Say on.
Then he said, “I have something to tell you.” “Say it,” she answered.
And now I ask one petition of thee, deny me not. And she said unto him, Say on.
So now I have just one request of you; do not deny me.” “State your request,” she told him.
And he said, Speak, I pray
thee, unto Solomon the king, (for he will not say
thee nay,) that he give me
Abishag the Shunammite to wife.
Adonijah replied, “Please speak to King Solomon, since he will not turn you down. Let him give me
Abishag the Shunammite as my wife.”
And Bath-
sheba said, Well; I will speak for
thee unto the king.
“Very well,” Bathsheba replied. “I will speak to the king for you.”
Then she said, I desire one small petition of
thee; I pray
thee, say me not
nay. And the king said unto her, Ask on, my mother: for I will not say
thee nay.
“I have just one small request of you,” she said. “Do not deny me.” “Make your request, my mother,” the king replied, “for I will not deny you.”
And unto
Abiathar the priest said the king, Get
thee to Anathoth, unto thine own fields; for thou art worthy of death: but I will not at this time put
thee to death, because thou barest the ark of the Lord GOD before David my father, and because thou hast been
afflicted in all wherein my father was
afflicted.
Then the king said to
Abiathar the priest, “Go back to your fields in Anathoth. Even though you deserve to die, I will not put you to death at this time, since you carried the ark of the Lord GOD before my father David, and you suffered through all that my father suffered.”
And the king sent and called for Shimei, and said unto him, Build
thee an house in Jerusalem, and dwell there, and go not forth thence any
whither.
Then the king summoned Shimei and said to him, “Build a house for
yourself in Jerusalem and live there, but do not go
anywhere else.
And the king sent and called for Shimei, and said unto him, Did I not make
thee to
swear by the LORD, and
protested unto
thee, saying, Know for a certain, on the day thou goest out, and walkest abroad any
whither, that thou shalt surely die? and thou saidst unto me, The word that I have heard is good.
the king summoned Shimei and said to him, “Did I not make you
swear by the LORD and
warn you, ‘On the day you leave and go elsewhere, know for sure that you will die’? And you told me, ‘The sentence is fair; I will
comply.’
Why then hast thou not kept the oath of the LORD, and the commandment that I have charged thee with?
So why have you not kept your oath to the LORD and the command that I gave you?”
In
Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give
thee.
One night at
Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream, and God said, “Ask, and I will give it to you!”
And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.
Solomon replied, “You have shown much loving devotion to Your servant, my father David, because he walked before You in faithfulness, righteousness, and uprightness of heart. And You have maintained this loving devotion by giving him a son to sit on his throne this very day.
Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.
behold, I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and
discerning heart, so that there has never been nor will ever be another like you.
