See therefore, and take knowledge of all the
lurking places where he hideth himself, and come ye again to me with the certainty, and I will go with you: and it shall come to pass, if he be in the land, that I will search him out throughout all the
thousands of Judah.
Observe and find out all the places where he hides. Then come back to me with certainty, and I will go with you. If he is in the land, I will search him out among all the clans of Judah.”
And Saul went on this side of the mountain, and David and his men on that side of the mountain: and David made
haste to get away for fear of Saul; for Saul and his men compassed David and his men round about to take them.
Saul was proceeding along one side of the mountain, and David and his men along the other side. Even
though David was
hurrying to get away, Saul and his men were closing in on David and his men to capture them.
Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.
So Saul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel and went to look for David and his men in the region of the Rocks of the Wild Goats.
And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the LORD said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that
thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the
skirt of Saul’s
robe privily.
So David’s men said to him, “This is the day about which the LORD said to you, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, that you may do with him as you wish.’” Then David
crept up secretly and cut off a corner of Saul’s
robe.
And David said to Saul, Wherefore hearest
thou men’s words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy
hurt?
and said to Saul, “Why do you
listen to the words of men who say, ‘Look, David intends to
harm you’?
Moreover, my father, see,
yea, see the
skirt of thy
robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the
skirt of thy
robe and killed thee not, know
thou and see that there is neither evil nor
transgression in mine hand, and I have not
sinned against thee; yet
thou huntest my soul to take it.
See, my father, look at the corner of your
robe in my hand. For I cut it off, but I did not kill you. See and know that there is no evil or rebellion in my hands. I have not
sinned against you, even
though you are hunting me down to take my life.
After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom
dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a
flea.
Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Whom are you pursuing? A dead dog? A
flea?
And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I: for thou hast rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil.
and said to David, “You are more righteous than I, for you have rewarded me with good, though I have rewarded you with evil.
And
thou hast shewed this day how that
thou hast dealt well with me:
forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me into thine hand,
thou killedst me not.
And you have shown this day how well you have dealt with me; for when the LORD delivered me into your hand, you did not kill me.
For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore the LORD reward thee good for that thou hast done unto me this day.
When a man finds his enemy, does he let him go away
unharmed? May the LORD reward you with good for what you have done for me this day.
And now, behold, I know well that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thine hand.
Now I know for sure that you will be king, and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hands.
Swear now therefore unto me by the LORD, that
thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that
thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father’s house.
So now,
swear to me by the LORD that you will not cut off my descendants or
wipe out my name from my father’s house.”
And there was a man in Maon, whose possessions were in
Carmel; and the man was very great, and he had three
thousand sheep, and a
thousand goats: and he was shearing his sheep in
Carmel.
Now there was a man in Maon whose business was in
Carmel. He was a very wealthy man with a
thousand goats and three
thousand sheep, which he was shearing in
Carmel.
And thus shall ye say to him that liveth in prosperity, Peace be both to thee, and peace be to thine house, and peace be unto all that thou hast.
and say to him, ‘Long life to you, and peace to you and your house and to all that belongs to you.
And now I have heard that
thou hast shearers: now thy
shepherds which were with us, we
hurt them not, neither was there ought missing unto them, all the while they were in
Carmel.
Now I hear that it is time for shearing. When your
shepherds were with us, we did not
harass them, and nothing of theirs was missing the whole time they were in
Carmel.
Now therefore know and consider what
thou wilt do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his household: for he is such a son of
Belial, that a man cannot speak to him.
Now consider carefully what you must do, because
disaster looms over our master and all his household. For he is such a
scoundrel that
nobody can speak to him!”
Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this man of
Belial, even Nabal: for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I thine
handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom
thou didst send.
My lord should pay no attention to this
scoundrel Nabal, for he lives up to his name: His name means
Fool, and folly accompanies him. I, your servant, did not see my lord’s young men whom you sent.
That this shall be no grief unto thee, nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that
thou hast shed blood causeless, or that my lord hath
avenged himself: but when the LORD shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thine
handmaid.
then my lord will have no
remorse or guilt of conscience over needless
bloodshed and
revenge. And when the LORD has dealt well with my lord, may you remember your
maidservant.”
And blessed be thy advice, and blessed be
thou, which hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from
avenging myself with mine own hand.
For in very deed, as the LORD God of Israel liveth, which hath kept me back from
hurting thee, except
thou hadst hasted and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall.
Otherwise, as surely as the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, who has restrained me from
harming you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, then surely no male belonging to Nabal would have been left alive by morning light.”
Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.
So Saul, accompanied by three thousand chosen men of Israel, went down to the Wilderness of Ziph to search for David there.
The LORD
forbid that I should stretch forth mine hand against the LORD’S
anointed: but, I pray thee, take
thou now the
spear that is at his
bolster, and the
cruse of water, and let us go.
But the LORD
forbid that I should stretch out my hand against the LORD’s
anointed. Instead, take the
spear and water
jug by his head, and let us go.”
And David
cried to the people, and to
Abner the son of
Ner, saying, Answerest
thou not,
Abner? Then
Abner answered and said, Who art
thou that criest to the king?
And David
shouted to the troops and to
Abner son of
Ner, “Will you not answer me,
Abner?” “Who calls to the king?”
Abner replied.
And David said to
Abner, Art not
thou a
valiant man? and who is like to thee in Israel? wherefore then hast
thou not kept thy lord the king? for there came one of the people in to destroy the king thy lord.
So David said to
Abner, “You are a man, aren’t you? And who in Israel is your equal? Why then did you not protect your lord the king when one of the people came to destroy him?
This thing is not good that
thou hast done. As the LORD liveth, ye are worthy to die, because ye have not kept your master, the LORD’S
anointed. And now see where the king’s
spear is, and the
cruse of water that was at his
bolster.
This thing you have done is not good. As surely as the LORD lives, all of you deserve to die, since you did not protect your lord, the LORD’s
anointed. Now look around. Where are the king’s
spear and water
jug that were by his head?”
Then Saul said to David, Blessed be thou, my son David: thou shalt both do great things, and also shalt still prevail. So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.
Saul said to him, “May you be blessed, David my son. You will
accomplish great things and will surely prevail.” So David went on his way, and Saul returned home.
And David and his men went up, and invaded the Geshurites, and the Gezrites, and the
Amalekites: for those nations were of old the inhabitants of the land, as
thou goest to Shur, even unto the land of Egypt.
Now David and his men went up and
raided the Geshurites, the Girzites, and the
Amalekites. (From ancient times these people had inhabited the land extending to Shur and Egypt.)
And it came to pass in those days, that the Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight with Israel. And Achish said unto David, Know
thou assuredly, that
thou shalt go out with me to battle,
thou and thy men.
Now in those days the Philistines gathered their forces for warfare against Israel. So Achish said to David, “You must understand that you and your men are to go out to battle with me.”
And David said to Achish, Surely thou shalt know what thy servant can do. And Achish said to David, Therefore will I make thee keeper of mine head for ever.
David replied, “Then you will come to know what your servant can do.” “Very well,” said Achish. “I will make you my
bodyguard for life.”
And the woman said unto him, Behold,
thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest
thou a
snare for my life, to cause me to die?
But the woman replied, “Surely you know what Saul has done, how he has killed the mediums and spiritists in the land. Why have you set a
trap to get me killed?”
And when the woman saw Samuel, she
cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast
thou deceived me? for
thou art Saul.
But when the woman saw Samuel, she
cried out in a loud voice and said to Saul, “Why have you
deceived me? You are Saul!”
And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth.
“Do not be afraid,” the king replied. “What do you see?” “I see a god coming up out of the earth,” the woman answered.
And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast
thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am
sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that
thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.
Then Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” “I am deeply distressed,” replied Saul. “The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has turned away from me. He no longer answers me, either by prophets or by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what to do.”
Then said Samuel, Wherefore then
dost thou ask of me, seeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy?
“Why do you
consult me,” asked Samuel, “since the LORD has turned away from you and become your enemy?
Because thou obeyedst not the voice of the LORD, nor executedst his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the LORD done this thing unto thee this day.
Because you did not obey the LORD or carry out His burning anger against Amalek, the LORD has done this to you
today.
Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines: and to
morrow shalt
thou and thy sons be with me: the LORD also shall deliver the host of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.
Moreover, the LORD will deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines, and
tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. And the LORD will deliver the army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.”
And the woman came unto Saul, and saw that he was
sore troubled, and said unto him, Behold, thine
handmaid hath obeyed thy voice, and I have put my life in my hand, and have
hearkened unto thy words which
thou spakest unto me.
When the woman came to Saul and saw how
distraught he was, she said to him, “Look, your
maidservant has obeyed your voice. I took my life in my hands and did as you told me.
Now therefore, I pray thee,
hearken thou also unto the voice of thine
handmaid, and let me set a
morsel of bread before thee; and eat, that
thou mayest have strength, when
thou goest on thy way.
Now please
listen to your servant and let me set a
morsel of bread before you so you may eat and have the strength to go on your way.”
And the lords of the Philistines passed on by hundreds, and by thousands: but David and his men passed on in the rereward with Achish.
As the
Philistine leaders marched out their units of hundreds and
thousands, David and his men marched behind them with Achish.
And the princes of the Philistines were
wroth with him; and the princes of the Philistines said unto him, Make this fellow return, that he may go again to his place which
thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he be an
adversary to us: for
wherewith should he
reconcile himself unto his master? should it not be with the heads of these men?
But the commanders of the Philistines were
angry with Achish and told him, “Send that man back and let him return to the place you assigned him. He must not go down with us into battle only to become our
adversary during the war. What better way for him to regain the favor of his master than with the heads of our men?
Is not this David, of whom they
sang one to another in dances, saying, Saul
slew his
thousands, and David his ten
thousands?
Is this not the David about whom they sing in their dances: ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands’?”
Then Achish called David, and said unto him, Surely, as the LORD liveth, thou hast been upright, and thy going out and thy coming in with me in the host is good in my sight: for I have not found evil in thee since the day of thy coming unto me unto this day: nevertheless the lords favour thee not.
So Achish summoned David and told him, “As surely as the LORD lives, you have been upright in my sight, and it seems right that you should march in and out with me in the army, because I have found no fault in you from the day you came to me until this day. But you have no favor in the sight of the leaders.
Wherefore now return, and go in peace, that thou displease not the lords of the Philistines.
Therefore turn back now and go in peace, so that you will not do anything to displease the leaders of the Philistines.”
And David said unto Achish, But what have I done? and what hast thou found in thy servant so long as I have been with thee unto this day, that I may not go fight against the enemies of my lord the king?
“But what have I done?” David replied. “What have you found against your servant, from the day I came to you until
today, to keep me from going along to fight against the enemies of my lord the king?”
And Achish answered and said to David, I know that thou art good in my sight, as an angel of God: notwithstanding the princes of the Philistines have said, He shall not go up with us to the battle.
Achish replied, “I know that you are as pleasing in my sight as an angel of God. But the commanders of the Philistines have said, ‘He must not go into battle with us.’
And David enquired at the LORD, saying, Shall I pursue after this
troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for
thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.
and David inquired of the LORD: “Should I pursue these raiders? Will I overtake them?” “Pursue them,” the LORD replied, “for you will surely overtake them and
rescue the
captives.”
And David said unto him, To whom belongest
thou? and whence art
thou? And he said, I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite; and my master left me, because three days
agone I fell sick.
Then David asked him, “To whom do you belong, and where are you from?” “I am an Egyptian,” he replied, “the slave of an Amalekite. My master abandoned me three days ago when I fell ill.
And David said to him, Canst
thou bring me down to this company? And he said,
Swear unto me by God, that
thou wilt neither kill me, nor deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will bring thee down to this company.
“Will you lead me to these raiders?” David asked. And the man replied, “
Swear to me by God that you will not kill me or deliver me into the hand of my master, and I will lead you to them.”
And David said unto him, From whence comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped.
“Where have you come from?” David asked. “I have escaped from the
Israelite camp,” he replied.
And David said unto the young man that told him, How knowest
thou that Saul and
Jonathan his son be dead?
Then David asked the young man who had brought him the report, “How do you know that Saul and his son
Jonathan are dead?”
And he said unto me, Who art thou? And I answered him, I am an Amalekite.
‘Who are you?’ he asked. So I told him, ‘I am an Amalekite.’
And David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite.
And David inquired of the young man who had brought him the report, “Where are you from?” “I am the son of a foreigner,” he answered. “I am an Amalekite.”
And David said unto him, How
wast thou not afraid to stretch forth thine hand to destroy the LORD’S
anointed?
So David asked him, “Why were you not afraid to lift your hand to destroy the LORD’s
anointed?”
Ye mountains of
Gilboa, let there be no
dew, neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of offerings: for there the shield of the mighty is
vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, as
though he had not been
anointed with oil.
O mountains of
Gilboa, may you have no
dew or rain, no fields yielding offerings of grain. For there the shield of the mighty was
defiled, the shield of Saul, no longer
anointed with oil.
How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! O
Jonathan,
thou wast slain in thine high places.
How the mighty have fallen in the thick of battle!
Jonathan lies slain on your heights.
I am distressed for thee, my brother
Jonathan: very pleasant hast
thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.
I
grieve for you,
Jonathan, my brother. You were delightful to me; your love to me was extraordinary,
surpassing the love of women.
Therefore now let your hands be strengthened, and be ye
valiant: for your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah have
anointed me king over them.
Now then, be strong and
courageous, for
though Saul your lord is dead, the house of Judah has
anointed me as their king.”
Then
Abner looked behind him, and said, Art
thou Asahel? And he answered, I am.
Then
Abner called to
Joab, and said, Shall the sword
devour for ever? knowest
thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then,
ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren?
Then
Abner called out to
Joab: “Must the sword
devour forever? Do you not
realize that this will only end in bitterness? How long before you tell the troops to stop pursuing their brothers?”
And
Joab said, As God liveth, unless
thou hadst spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother.
“As surely as God lives,”
Joab replied, “if you had not spoken up, the troops would have continued pursuing their brothers until morning.”
And Saul had a
concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah: and
Ish-bosheth said to
Abner, Wherefore hast
thou gone in unto my father’s
concubine?
Meanwhile, Saul had a
concubine named Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah. So
Ish-bosheth questioned
Abner, “Why did you sleep with my father’s
concubine?”
Then was
Abner very
wroth for the words of
Ish-bosheth, and said, Am I a dog’s head, which against Judah do
shew kindness this day unto the house of Saul thy father, to his brethren, and to his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David, that
thou chargest me to day with a fault concerning this woman?
Abner was
furious over
Ish-bosheth’s
accusation. “Am I the head of a dog that belongs to Judah?” he asked. “All this time I have been
loyal to the house of your father Saul, to his brothers, and to his friends. I have not delivered you into the hand of David, but now you
accuse me of
wrongdoing with this woman!
And he said, Well; I will make a league with thee: but one thing I require of thee, that is, Thou shalt not see my face, except thou first bring Michal Saul’s daughter, when thou comest to see my face.
“Good,” replied David, “I will make a covenant with you. But there is one thing I require of you: Do not appear before me unless you bring Saul’s daughter Michal when you come to see me.”
And
Abner said unto David, I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel unto my lord the king, that they may make a league with thee, and that
thou mayest reign over all that thine heart desireth. And David sent
Abner away; and he went in peace.
Then
Abner said to David, “Let me go at once, and I will gather all Israel to my lord the king, that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may rule over all that your heart desires.” So David dismissed
Abner, and he went in peace.
Then
Joab came to the king, and said, What hast
thou done? behold,
Abner came unto thee; why is it that
thou hast sent him away, and he is quite gone?
So
Joab went to the king and said, “What have you done? Look,
Abner came to you. Why did you dismiss him? Now he is getting away!
Thou knowest
Abner the son of
Ner, that he came to
deceive thee, and to know thy going out and thy coming in, and to know all that
thou doest.
Thy hands were not bound, nor thy feet put into
fetters: as a man falleth before wicked men, so fellest
thou. And all the people
wept again over him.
Your hands were not bound, your feet were not
fettered. As a man falls before the wicked, so also you fell.” And all the people
wept over him even more.
And I am this day weak,
though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah be too hard for me: the LORD shall reward the
doer of evil according to his wickedness.
And I am weak this day,
though anointed as king, and these men, the sons of Zeruiah, are too fierce for me. May the LORD repay the
evildoer according to his evil!”
And they came thither into the midst of the house, as
though they would have
fetched wheat; and they
smote him under the fifth rib: and Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped.
They entered the interior of the house as if to get some wheat, and they
stabbed him in the stomach. Then Rechab and his brother Baanah
slipped away.
When one told me, saying, Behold, Saul is dead, thinking to have brought good
tidings, I took hold of him, and
slew him in
Ziklag, who
thought that I would have given him a reward for his
tidings:
when someone told me, ‘Look, Saul is dead,’ and
thought he was a bearer of good news, I seized him and put him to death at
Ziklag. That was his reward for his news!
Also in time past, when Saul was king over us,
thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD said to thee,
Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and
thou shalt be a captain over Israel.
Even in times past, while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel out and brought them back. And to you the LORD said, ‘You will
shepherd My people Israel, and you will be ruler over them.’”
And the king and his men went to Jerusalem unto the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land: which spake unto David, saying, Except
thou take away the blind and the
lame,
thou shalt not come in
hither: thinking, David cannot come in
hither.
Now the king and his men marched to Jerusalem against the Jebusites who inhabited the land. The Jebusites said to David: “You will never get in here. Even the blind and
lame can
repel you.” For they
thought, “David cannot get in here.”
And David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up to the Philistines?
wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto David, Go up: for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into thine hand.
So David inquired of the LORD, “Should I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?” “Go,” replied the LORD, “for I will surely deliver the Philistines into your hand.”
And when David enquired of the LORD, he said,
Thou shalt not go up; but
fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the
mulberry trees.
So David inquired of the LORD, who answered, “Do not march straight up, but circle around behind them and attack them in front of the
balsam trees.
And let it be, when
thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the
mulberry trees, that then
thou shalt
bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go out before thee, to
smite the host of the Philistines.
As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the
balsam trees, move quickly, because this will mean that the LORD has marched out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.”
And David did so, as the LORD had commanded him; and
smote the Philistines from Geba until
thou come to
Gazer.
So David did as the LORD had commanded him, and he struck down the Philistines all the way from
Gibeon to
Gezer.
Again, David gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand.
David again assembled the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand in all.
And I will yet be more
vile than thus, and will be base in mine own sight: and of the maidservants which
thou hast spoken of, of them shall I be had in honour.
and I will
humiliate and humble myself even more than this. Yet I will be honored by the maidservants of whom you have spoken.”
Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith the LORD, Shalt thou build me an house for me to dwell in?
“Go and tell My servant David that this is what the LORD says: Are you the one to build for Me a house to dwell in?
Now therefore so shalt
thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the
sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel:
Now then, you are to tell My servant David that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to be the ruler over My people Israel.
And I was with thee
whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth.
I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make for you a name like the greatest in the land.
And when thy days be fulfilled, and
thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy
bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.
And when your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your
descendant after you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom.
Then went king David in, and sat before the LORD, and he said, Who am I, O Lord GOD? and what is my house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?
Then King David went in, sat before the LORD, and said, “Who am I, O Lord GOD, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far?
And this was yet a small thing in thy sight, O Lord GOD; but thou hast spoken also of thy servant’s house for a great while to come. And is this the manner of man, O Lord GOD?
And as if this was a small thing in Your eyes, O Lord GOD, You have also spoken about the future of the house of Your servant. Is this Your custom with man, O Lord GOD?
And what can David say more unto thee? for thou, Lord GOD, knowest thy servant.
What more can David say to You? For You know Your servant, O Lord GOD.
For thy word’s sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all these great things, to make thy servant know them.
For the sake of Your word and according to Your own heart, You have accomplished this great thing and revealed it to Your servant.
Wherefore thou art great, O LORD God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
How great You are, O Lord GOD! For there is none like You, and there is no God but You, according to everything we have heard with our own ears.
And what one nation in the earth is like thy people, even like Israel, whom God went to
redeem for a people to himself, and to make him a name, and to do for you great things and terrible, for thy land, before thy people, which
thou redeemedst to thee from Egypt, from the nations and their gods?
And who is like Your people Israel—the one nation on earth whom God went out to
redeem as a people for Himself and to make a name for Himself? You performed great and
awesome wonders by driving out nations and their gods from before Your people, whom You redeemed for
Yourself from Egypt.
For
thou hast confirmed to
thyself thy people Israel to be a people unto thee for ever: and
thou, LORD, art become their God.
For You have established Your people Israel as Your very own
forever, and You, O LORD, have become their God.
And now, O LORD God, the word that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant, and concerning his house, establish it for ever, and do as thou hast said.
And now, O LORD God,
confirm forever the word You have spoken concerning Your servant and his house. Do as You have promised,
For thou, O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, hast revealed to thy servant, saying, I will build thee an house: therefore hath thy servant found in his heart to pray this prayer unto thee.
For You, O LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, have revealed this to Your servant when You said, ‘I will build a house for you.’ Therefore Your servant has found the courage to offer this prayer to You.
And now, O Lord GOD, thou art that God, and thy words be true, and thou hast promised this goodness unto thy servant:
And now, O Lord GOD, You are God! Your words are true, and You have promised this goodness to Your servant.
Therefore now let it please thee to
bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee: for
thou, O Lord GOD, hast spoken it: and with thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed for ever.
Now therefore, may it please You to
bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue
forever before You. For You, O Lord GOD, have spoken, and with Your blessing the house of Your servant will be blessed
forever.”

And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely
shew thee kindness for
Jonathan thy father’s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and
thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.
“Do not be afraid,” said David, “for surely I will show you kindness for the sake of your father
Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land of your
grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.”
And he bowed himself, and said, What is thy servant, that thou shouldest look upon such a dead dog as I am?
Mephibosheth bowed down and said, “What is your servant, that you should show regard for a dead dog like me?”
Thou therefore, and thy sons, and thy servants, shall till the land for him, and
thou shalt bring in the fruits, that thy master’s son may have food to eat: but Mephibosheth thy master’s son shall eat bread
alway at my table. Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.
You and your sons and servants are to work the ground for him and bring in the harvest, so that your master’s grandson may have food to eat. But Mephibosheth, your master’s grandson, is always to eat at my table.” Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.
