Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of
indignation, and his
tongue as a
devouring fire:
Behold, the Name of the LORD comes from
afar, with burning anger and dense smoke. His lips are full of
fury, and His
tongue is like a
consuming fire.
The heart also of the
rash shall understand knowledge, and the
tongue of the stammerers shall be ready to speak plainly.
Thou shalt not see a fierce people, a people of a deeper speech than thou canst perceive; of a
stammering tongue, that thou canst not understand.
You will no longer see the
insolent, a people whose speech is unintelligible, who
stammer in a language you cannot understand.
Then shall the
lame man
leap as an
hart, and the
tongue of the
dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert.
Then the
lame will
leap like a deer and the
mute tongue will
shout for joy. For waters will
gush forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert.
When the poor and
needy seek water, and there is none, and their
tongue faileth for
thirst, I the LORD will hear them, I the God of Israel will not
forsake them.
The poor and
needy seek water, but there is none; their
tongues are
parched with
thirst. I, the LORD, will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not
forsake them.
The smith with the
tongs both worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with the strength of his arms:
yea, he is
hungry, and his strength faileth: he drinketh no water, and is
faint.
The
blacksmith takes a tool and labors over the coals; he fashions an
idol with hammers and forges it with his strong arms. Yet he grows
hungry and loses his strength; he fails to drink water and grows
faint.
I have
sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every
knee shall bow, every
tongue shall
swear.
By Myself I have
sworn; truth has gone out from My mouth, a word that will not be
revoked: Every
knee will bow before Me, every
tongue will
swear allegiance.
The Lord GOD hath given me the
tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is
weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.
The Lord GOD has given Me the
tongue of
discipleship, to
sustain the
weary with a word. He awakens Me morning by morning; He awakens My ear to
listen as a disciple.
No weapon that is formed against thee shall
prosper; and every
tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt
condemn. This is the
heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.
No weapon formed against you shall
prosper, and you will
refute every
tongue that accuses you. This is the
heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their
vindication is from Me,” declares the LORD.
For your hands are
defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your
tongue hath
muttered perverseness.
For your hands are
stained with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, and your
tongue mutters injustice.
For I know their works and their thoughts: it shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come, and see my glory.
“And I, knowing their deeds and thoughts, am coming to gather all nations and tongues, and they will come and see My glory.
And they bend their
tongues like their bow for lies: but they are not
valiant for the truth upon the earth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, saith the LORD.
“They bend their tongues like bows; lies prevail over truth in the land. For they proceed from evil to evil, and they do not take Me into account,” declares the LORD.
And they will
deceive every one his neighbour, and will not speak the truth: they have taught their
tongue to speak lies, and
weary themselves to commit iniquity.
Each one betrays his friend; no one tells the truth. They have taught their
tongues to lie; they wear themselves out
committing iniquity.
Their
tongue is as an
arrow shot out; it speaketh
deceit: one speaketh
peaceably to his neighbour with his mouth, but in heart he layeth his wait.
Their
tongues are deadly arrows; they speak
deception. With his mouth a man speaks peace to his
neighbor, but in his heart he sets a
trap for him.
Then said they, Come, and let us
devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us
smite him with the
tongue, and let us not give
heed to any of his words.
Then some said, “Come, let us make plans against Jeremiah, for the law will never be lost to the priest, nor counsel to the wise, nor an
oracle to the prophet. Come, let us
denounce him and pay no
heed to any of his words.”
Behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that use their tongues, and say, He saith.
“
Yes,” declares the LORD, “I am against the prophets who
wag their own
tongues and
proclaim, ‘The LORD declares it.’”
The
tongue of the
sucking child cleaveth to the roof of his mouth for
thirst: the young children ask bread, and no man breaketh it unto them.
The
nursing infant’s
tongue clings in
thirst to the roof of his mouth. Little children
beg for bread, but no one gives them any.
And I will make thy
tongue cleave to the roof of thy mouth, that thou shalt be
dumb, and shalt not be to them a reprover: for they are a
rebellious house.
I will make your
tongue stick to the roof of your mouth, and you will be silent and unable to
rebuke them, though they are a
rebellious house.
Children in whom was no
blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and
cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the
tongue of the Chaldeans.
young men without
blemish, handsome, gifted in all wisdom, knowledgeable, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace—and to teach them the language and literature of the Chaldeans.
They return, but not to the most High: they are like a
deceitful bow: their princes shall fall by the sword for the
rage of their
tongue: this shall be their
derision in the land of Egypt.
They turn, but not to the Most High; they are like a
faulty bow. Their leaders will fall by the sword for the
cursing of their
tongue; for this they will be
ridiculed in the land of Egypt.
And a man’s uncle shall take him up, and he that burneth him, to bring out the bones out of the house, and shall say unto him that is by the sides of the house, Is there yet any with thee? and he shall say, No. Then shall he say, Hold thy tongue: for we may not make mention of the name of the LORD.
And when the relative who is to burn the bodies picks them up to remove them from the house, he will call to one inside, “Is
anyone else with you?” “None,” that person will answer. “Silence,” the relative will
retort, “for the name of the LORD must not be
invoked.”
For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their
tongue is
deceitful in their mouth.
For the wealthy of the city are full of violence, and its residents speak lies; their
tongues are
deceitful in their mouths.
Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal
treacherously, and holdest thy
tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he?
Your eyes are too pure to look upon evil, and You cannot
tolerate wrongdoing. So why do You
tolerate the faithless? Why are You silent while the wicked
swallow up those more righteous than themselves?
The
remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall a
deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed and lie down, and none shall make them afraid.
The
remnant of Israel will no longer do wrong or speak lies, nor will a
deceitful tongue be found in their mouths. But they will feed and lie down, with no one to make them
tremble.”
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the
skirt of him that is a
Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you.
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “In those days ten men from the nations of every
tongue will
tightly grasp the
robe of a
Jew, saying, ‘Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.’”
And this shall be the plague
wherewith the LORD will
smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall
consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall
consume away in their holes, and their
tongue shall
consume away in their mouth.
And this will be the plague with which the LORD strikes all the peoples who have
warred against Jerusalem: Their flesh will
rot while they stand on their feet, their eyes will
rot in their sockets, and their
tongues will
rot in their mouths.
And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he
spit, and touched his
tongue;
So Jesus took him aside privately, away from the crowd, and put His fingers into the man’s ears. Then He
spit and touched the man’s
tongue.
And
straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his
tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.
Immediately the man’s ears were opened and his tongue was released, and he began to speak plainly.
And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
And these signs will
accompany those who believe: In My name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new
tongues;
And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.
Immediately
Zechariah’s mouth was opened and his
tongue was released, and he began to speak, praising God.
And he
cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send
Lazarus, that he may dip the
tip of his finger in water, and cool my
tongue; for I am
tormented in this flame.
So he
cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send
Lazarus to dip the
tip of his finger in water and cool my
tongue. For I am in
agony in this fire.’
Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a
pool, which is called in the Hebrew
tongue Bethesda, having five porches.
Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a
pool with five covered colonnades, which in Hebrew is called
Bethesda.
And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem;
insomuch as that field is called in their proper
tongue,
Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.
This became known to all who lived in Jerusalem, so they called that field in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)
And there appeared unto them
cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other
tongues, as the Spirit gave them
utterance.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
How is it then that each of us hears them in his own native language?
Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
both Jews and converts to
Judaism; Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own
tongues!”
Therefore did my heart
rejoice, and my
tongue was
glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:
Therefore my heart is
glad and my
tongue rejoices; my body also will dwell in hope,
For they heard them speak with
tongues, and
magnify God. Then answered Peter,
For they heard them speaking in
tongues and
exalting God. Then Peter said,
And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with
tongues, and
prophesied.
And when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in
tongues and
prophesied.
And when he had given him licence, Paul stood on the stairs, and
beckoned with the hand unto the people. And when there was made a great silence, he spake unto them in the Hebrew
tongue, saying,
Having received permission, Paul stood on the steps and motioned to the crowd. A great
hush came over the crowd, and he addressed them in Hebrew:
(And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,)
When they heard him speak to them in Hebrew, they became even more silent. Then Paul declared,
And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew
tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to
kick against the pricks.
We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice say to me in Hebrew, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you
persecute Me? It is hard for you to
kick against the goads.’
Their throat is an open
sepulchre; with their
tongues they have used
deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:
“Their throats are open graves; their
tongues practice
deceit.” “The
venom of vipers is on their lips.”
For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every
knee shall bow to me, and every
tongue shall
confess to God.
It is written: “As surely as I live, says the Lord, every
knee will bow before Me; every
tongue will
confess to God.”
To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another
discerning of spirits; to another
divers kinds of
tongues; to another the interpretation of
tongues:
to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in various tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.
And God hath set some in the church, first apostles,
secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments,
diversities of
tongues.
And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, and those with gifts of
healing, helping, administration, and various
tongues.
Though I speak with the
tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a
tinkling cymbal.
If I speak in the
tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a ringing
gong or a
clanging cymbal.
Charity never faileth: but whether there be
prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be
tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall
vanish away.
Love never fails. But where there are
prophecies, they will cease; where there are
tongues, they will be restrained; where there is knowledge, it will be dismissed.
For he that speaketh in an unknown
tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him;
howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men, but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries in the Spirit.
He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
The one who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but the one who prophesies edifies the church.
I would that ye all spake with
tongues, but rather that ye
prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with
tongues, except he
interpret, that the church may receive
edifying.
I wish that all of you could speak in
tongues, but I would rather have you
prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in
tongues, unless he interprets so that the church may be
edified.
Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with
tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by
prophesying, or by doctrine?
Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching?
So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your
tongue, how will
anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air.
Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown
tongue pray that he may
interpret.
Therefore, the one who speaks in a
tongue should pray that he may
interpret.
For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.
For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
I
thank my God, I speak with
tongues more than ye all:
I
thank God that I speak in
tongues more than all of you.
Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
But in the church, I would rather speak five
coherent words to
instruct others than ten thousand words in a
tongue.
In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.
It is written in the Law: “By strange
tongues and foreign lips I will speak to this people, but even then they will not
listen to Me, says the Lord.”
Wherefore
tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but
prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.
Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers, but for unbelievers. Prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers.
If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with
tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are
mad?
So if the whole church comes together and
everyone speaks in
tongues, and some who are
uninstructed or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your minds?
How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a
psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a
tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto
edifying.
What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together,
everyone has a
psalm or a teaching, a revelation, a
tongue, or an interpretation. All of these must be done to build up the church.
If any man speak in an unknown
tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one
interpret.
If
anyone speaks in a
tongue, two, or at most three, should speak in turn, and someone must
interpret.
So, my brothers, be eager to
prophesy, and do not
forbid speaking in
tongues.
I desire to be present with you now, and to change my voice; for I stand in doubt of you.
how I wish I could be with you now and change my
tone, because I am
perplexed about you.
And that every
tongue should
confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
and every
tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not
greedy of
filthy lucre;
Deacons likewise must be
dignified, not double-
tongued or given to much wine or
greedy for money.
If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.
If
anyone considers himself religious and yet does not
bridle his
tongue, he deceives his heart and his religion is worthless.
Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
In the same way, the
tongue is a small part of the body, but it boasts of great things. Consider how small a
spark sets a great forest
ablaze.
And the
tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the
tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of
hell.
The
tongue also is a fire, a world of wickedness among the parts of the body. It pollutes the whole person, sets the course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by
hell.
But the
tongue can no man
tame; it is an
unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
but no man can
tame the
tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
With the
tongue we
bless our Lord and Father, and with it we
curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness.
For he that will love life, and see good days, let him
refrain his
tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no
guile:
For, “
Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his
tongue from evil and his lips from
deceitful speech.
My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
Little children, let us love not in word and speech, but in action and truth.
And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou
wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and
tongue, and people, and nation;
And they
sang a new song: “Worthy are You to take the
scroll and open its seals, because You were slain, and by Your blood You purchased for God those from every tribe and
tongue and people and nation.
After this I
beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and
tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;
After this I looked and saw a multitude too large to count, from every nation and tribe and people and tongue, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their hands.
And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew
tongue is
Abaddon, but in the Greek
tongue hath his name
Apollyon.
They were ruled by a king, the angel of the
Abyss. His name in Hebrew is
Abaddon, and in Greek it is
Apollyon.
And he said unto me, Thou must
prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and
tongues, and kings.
And they told me, “You must
prophesy again about many peoples and nations and
tongues and kings.”
And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.
For three and a half days all peoples and tribes and tongues and nations will view their bodies and will not permit them to be laid in a tomb.
And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
Then the beast was permitted to
wage war against the saints and to
conquer them, and it was given authority over every tribe and people and
tongue and nation.
And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the
everlasting gospel to
preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and
tongue, and people,
Then I saw another angel flying overhead, with the eternal gospel to
proclaim to those who dwell on the earth—to every nation and tribe and
tongue and people.
And the fifth angel poured out his
vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they
gnawed their
tongues for pain,
And the fifth angel poured out his
bowl on the throne of the beast, and its kingdom was
plunged into darkness, and men began to
gnaw their
tongues in
anguish And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew
tongue Armageddon.
And they assembled the kings in the place that in Hebrew is called
Armageddon.
And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the
whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and
tongues.
Then the angel said to me, “The waters you saw, where the
prostitute was seated, are peoples and multitudes and nations and
tongues.
O ye men, how should not the king be mightiest, when in such sort he is obeyed? And he held his tongue.
But only I saw that he sent out of his mouth as it had been a blast of fire, and out of his lips a flaming breath, and out of his tongue he cast out sparks and tempests.
As for me. I spake in the day, and I held not my tongue by night.
I will hold my
tongue no more as touching their wickedness, which they
profanely commit, neither will I suffer them in those things, in which they wickedly exercise themselves: behold, the innocent and righteous blood crieth unto me, and the souls of the just
complain continually.
Yet he did cast down their frontiers, and cut down their groves: for he had decreed to destroy all the gods of the land, that all nations should worship Nabuchodonosor only, and that all tongues and tribes should call upon him as god.
For wisdom is a loving spirit; and will not
acquit a
blasphemer of his words: for God is witness of his
reins, and a true beholder of his heart, and a hearer of his
tongue.
Therefore
beware of
murmuring, which is unprofitable; and
refrain your
tongue from
backbiting: for there is no word so secret, that shall go for
nought: and the mouth that belieth slayeth the soul.
When I hold my
tongue, they shall
bide my leisure, and when I speak, they shall give good ear unto me: if I talk much, they shall lay their hands upon their mouth.
For wisdom opened the mouth of the
dumb, and made the
tongues of them that cannot speak
eloquent.
For by speech wisdom shall be known: and learning by the word of the tongue.
Be not
hasty in thy
tongue, and in thy deeds
slack and remiss.
Winnow not with every wind, and go not into every way: for so
doth the
sinner that hath a double
tongue.
Honour and shame is in talk: and the tongue of man is his fall.
Be not called a
whisperer, and lie not in wait with thy
tongue: for a foul shame is upon the
thief, and an evil
condemnation upon the double
tongue.
