A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a
cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.
You are to make a roof for the ark, finish its
walls a
cubit from the top, place a door in the side of the ark, and build lower, middle, and upper decks.
O my soul, come not thou into their secret; unto their assembly, mine honour, be not thou united: for in their anger they
slew a man, and in their selfwill they
digged down a
wall.
May I never enter their council; may I never join their assembly. For they kill men in their anger, and
hamstring oxen on a
whim.
Joseph is a fruitful
bough, even a fruitful
bough by a well; whose branches run over the
wall:
Joseph is a fruitful vine— a fruitful vine by a spring, whose branches scale the wall.
And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.
and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on their right and on their left.
But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.
But the Israelites had walked through the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on their right and on their left.
And with the blast of thy nostrils the waters were gathered together, the floods stood upright as an
heap, and the depths were
congealed in the heart of the sea.
At the blast of Your nostrils the waters piled up; like a
wall the currents stood firm; the depths
congealed in the heart of the sea.
And he shall look on the plague, and, behold, if the plague be in the
walls of the house with hollow strakes,
greenish or reddish, which in sight are lower than the
wall;
He is to examine the house, and if the
mildew on the
walls consists of green or red depressions that appear to be beneath the surface of the
wall,
And the priest shall come again the seventh day, and shall look: and, behold, if the plague be spread in the walls of the house;
On the seventh day the priest is to return and
inspect the house. If the
mildew has spread on the
walls,
And if a man sell a dwelling house in a
walled city, then he may
redeem it within a whole year after it is sold; within a full year may he
redeem it.
If a man sells a house in a
walled city, he retains his right of
redemption until a full year after its sale; during that year it may be redeemed.
And if it be not redeemed within the space of a full year, then the house that is in the walled city shall be established for ever to him that bought it throughout his generations: it shall not go out in the jubile.
If it is not redeemed by the end of a full year, then the house in the
walled city is permanently transferred to its
buyer and his descendants. It is not to be released in the
Jubilee.
But the houses of the villages which have no wall round about them shall be counted as the fields of the country: they may be redeemed, and they shall go out in the jubile.
But houses in villages with no
walls around them are to be considered as open fields. They may be redeemed, and they shall be released in the
Jubilee.
Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are
walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of
Anak there.
Nevertheless, the people living in the land are strong, and the cities are large and fortified. We even saw the descendants of
Anak there.
But the angel of the LORD stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.
Then the angel of the LORD stood in a narrow passage between two vineyards, with walls on either side.
And when the
ass saw the angel of the LORD, she thrust herself unto the
wall, and
crushed Balaam’s foot against the
wall: and he
smote her again.
And the
donkey saw the angel of the LORD and pressed herself against the
wall,
crushing Balaam’s foot against it. So he beat her once again.
And the suburbs of the cities, which ye shall give unto the Levites, shall reach from the wall of the city and outward a thousand cubits round about.
The pasturelands around the cities you are to give the Levites will extend a thousand cubits from the wall on every side.
Whither shall we go up? our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying, The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and
walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there.
Where can we go? Our brothers have made our hearts
melt, saying: ‘The people are larger and taller than we are; the cities are large, with
walls up to the heavens. We even saw the descendants of the
Anakim there.’”
From Aroer, which is by the
brink of the river of
Arnon, and from the city that is by the river, even unto
Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us: the LORD our God delivered all unto us:
From Aroer on the
rim of the
Arnon Valley, along with the city in the valley, even as far as
Gilead, not one city had
walls too high for us. The LORD our God gave us all of them.
All these cities were
fenced with high
walls, gates, and bars; beside unwalled towns a great many.
All these cities were fortified with high walls and gates and bars, and there were many more unwalled villages.
And he shall
besiege thee in all thy gates, until thy high and
fenced walls come down, wherein thou trustedst, throughout all thy land: and he shall
besiege thee in all thy gates throughout all thy land, which the LORD thy God hath given thee.
They will
besiege all the cities throughout your land, until the high and fortified
walls in which you trust have fallen. They will
besiege all your cities throughout the land that the LORD your God has given you.
Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.
Then
Rahab let them down by a rope through the window, since the house where she lived was built into the
wall of the city.
And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when ye hear the sound of the
trumpet, all the people shall
shout with a great
shout; and the
wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall
ascend up every man straight before him.
And when there is a long blast of the ram’s horn and you hear its sound, have all the people give a mighty
shout. Then the
wall of the city will
collapse and all your people will charge straight into the city.”
So the people
shouted when the priests
blew with the
trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the
trumpet, and the people
shouted with a great
shout, that the
wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.
So when the rams’ horns sounded, the people
shouted. When they heard the blast of the horn, the people gave a great
shout, and the
wall collapsed. Then all the people charged straight into the city and captured it.
And Saul cast the
javelin; for he said, I will
smite David even to the
wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice.
and he
hurled it, thinking, “I will pin David to the
wall.” But David
eluded him twice.
And Saul sought to
smite David even to the
wall with the
javelin; but he
slipped away out of Saul’s presence, and he
smote the
javelin into the
wall: and David fled, and escaped that night.
Saul tried to pin him to the
wall with his
spear. But the
spear struck the
wall and David
eluded him, ran away, and escaped that night.
And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, even upon a seat by the
wall: and
Jonathan arose, and
Abner sat by Saul’s side, and David’s place was empty.
He sat in his usual place by the
wall, opposite
Jonathan and beside
Abner, but David’s place was empty.
They were a wall unto us both by night and day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep.
They were a
wall around us, both day and night, the whole time we were
herding our sheep near them.
So and more also do God unto the enemies of David, if I leave of all that
pertain to him by the morning light any that pisseth against the
wall.
May God
punish David, and ever so severely, if I let one of Nabal’s men
survive until morning.”
For in very deed, as the LORD God of Israel liveth, which hath kept me back from
hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light any that pisseth against the
wall.
Otherwise, as surely as the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, who has restrained me from
harming you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, then surely no male belonging to Nabal would have been left alive by morning light.”
And they put his armour in the house of
Ashtaroth: and they fastened his body to the
wall of Beth-shan.
They put his
armor in the temple of the Ashtoreths and hung his body on the
wall of Beth-shan.
All the
valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the
wall of Beth-shan, and came to
Jabesh, and burnt them there.
all their men of
valor set out, journeyed all night, and
retrieved the bodies of Saul and his sons from the
wall of Beth-shan. When they arrived at
Jabesh, they burned the bodies there.
And if so be that the king’s wrath arise, and he say unto thee, Wherefore approached ye so
nigh unto the city when ye did fight? knew ye not that they would shoot from the
wall?
if the king’s anger flares, he may ask you, ‘Why did you get so close to the city to fight? Did you not
realize they would shoot from
atop the
wall?
Who
smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast a piece of a
millstone upon him from the
wall, that he died in Thebez? why went ye
nigh the
wall? then say thou, Thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
Who was the one to strike
Abimelech son of Jerubbesheth? Was it not a woman who dropped an upper
millstone on him from the
wall, so that he died in Thebez? Why did you get so close to the
wall?’ If so, then you are to say, ‘Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead as well.’”
And the shooters shot from off the wall upon thy servants; and some of the king’s servants be dead, and thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
Then the archers shot at your servants from the wall, and some of the king’s servants were killed. And your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead as well.”
And David sat between the two gates: and the
watchman went up to the roof over the gate unto the
wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold a man running alone.
Now David was sitting between the two gates when the
watchman went up to the roof of the
gateway by the
wall, looked out, and saw a man running alone.
And
Amasa wallowed in blood in the midst of the
highway. And when the man saw that all the people stood still, he removed
Amasa out of the
highway into the field, and cast a cloth upon him, when he saw that every one that came by him stood still.
But
Amasa wallowed in his blood in the middle of the road, and when the man saw that all the troops were
stopping there, he
dragged the body off the road into a field and threw a garment over it.
And they came and besieged him in
Abel of Beth-maachah, and they cast up a bank against the city, and it stood in the
trench: and all the people that were with
Joab battered the
wall, to throw it down.
The matter is not so: but a man of mount Ephraim,
Sheba the son of Bichri by name, hath lifted up his hand against the king, even against David: deliver him only, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said unto
Joab, Behold, his head shall be thrown to thee over the
wall.
That is not the case. But a man named
Sheba son of Bichri, from the hill country of Ephraim, has lifted up his hand against the king, against David. Deliver him alone, and I will depart from the city.” “Look,” the woman replied, “his head will be thrown to you over the
wall.”
For by thee I have run through a
troop: by my God have I
leaped over a
wall.
For in You I can charge an army; with my God I can scale a wall.
And Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh’s daughter, and brought her into the city of David, until he had made an end of building his own house, and the house of the LORD, and the wall of Jerusalem round about.
Later, Solomon formed an alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt by marrying his daughter. Solomon brought her to the City of David until he had finished building his palace and the house of the LORD, as well as the wall around Jerusalem.
And he spake of trees, from the
cedar tree that is in
Lebanon even unto the
hyssop that springeth out of the
wall: he spake also of beasts, and of fowl, and of
creeping things, and of fishes.
He spoke of trees, from the
cedar in
Lebanon to the
hyssop growing in the
wall, and he taught about animals, birds, reptiles, and fish.
And against the
wall of the house he built chambers round about, against the
walls of the house round about, both of the temple and of the
oracle: and he made chambers round about:
Against the walls of the temple and the inner sanctuary, Solomon built a chambered structure around the temple, in which he constructed the side rooms.
The
nethermost chamber was five cubits broad, and the middle was six cubits broad, and the third was seven cubits broad: for without in the
wall of the house he made narrowed rests round about, that the beams should not be fastened in the
walls of the house.
The bottom floor was five cubits wide, the middle floor six cubits, and the third floor seven cubits. He also placed
offset ledges around the outside of the temple, so that nothing would be inserted into its
walls.
And he built the
walls of the house within with boards of
cedar, both the floor of the house, and the
walls of the cieling: and he covered them on the inside with wood, and covered the floor of the house with planks of
fir.
He lined the interior
walls with
cedar paneling from the floor of the temple to the
ceiling, and he covered the floor with
cypress boards.
And he built twenty cubits on the sides of the house, both the floor and the
walls with boards of
cedar: he even built them for it within, even for the
oracle, even for the most holy place.
He partitioned off the twenty cubits at the rear of the temple with
cedar boards from floor to
ceiling to form within the temple an inner sanctuary, the Most Holy Place.
And he set the cherubims within the inner house: and they stretched forth the wings of the cherubims, so that the wing of the one touched the one
wall, and the wing of the other
cherub touched the other
wall; and their wings touched one another in the midst of the house.
And he placed the
cherubim inside the
innermost room of the temple. Since their wings were spread out, the wing of the first
cherub touched one
wall, while the wing of the second
cherub touched the other
wall, and in the middle of the room their wingtips touched.
And he carved all the walls of the house round about with carved figures of cherubims and palm trees and open flowers, within and without.
Then he carved the
walls all around the temple, in both the inner and outer
sanctuaries, with carved engravings of
cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers.
And for the entering of the
oracle he made doors of olive tree: the
lintel and side posts were a fifth part of the
wall.
For the entrance to the inner sanctuary, Solomon constructed doors of olive wood with five-sided doorposts.
So also made he for the door of the temple posts of olive tree, a fourth part of the wall.
In the same way he made four-sided doorposts of olive wood for the sanctuary entrance.
And this is the reason of the
levy which king Solomon raised; for to build the house of the LORD, and his own house, and
Millo, and the
wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor, and
Megiddo, and
Gezer.
This is the account of the forced labor that King Solomon imposed to build the house of the LORD, his own palace, the supporting terraces, and the
wall of Jerusalem, as well as Hazor,
Megiddo, and
Gezer.
And this was the cause that he lifted up his hand against the king: Solomon built
Millo, and repaired the breaches of the city of David his father.
and this is the account of his rebellion against the king. Solomon had built the supporting terraces and repaired the
gap in the
wall of the city of his father David.
Therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of
Jeroboam, and will cut off from
Jeroboam him that pisseth against the
wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel, and will take away the
remnant of the house of
Jeroboam, as a man taketh away dung, till it be all gone.
Because of all this, behold, I am bringing
disaster on the house of
Jeroboam: I will cut off from
Jeroboam every male, both slave and free, in Israel; I will burn up the house of
Jeroboam as one burns up dung until it is gone!
And it came to pass, when he began to reign, as soon as he sat on his throne, that he
slew all the house of
Baasha: he left him not one that pisseth against a
wall, neither of his kinsfolks, nor of his friends.
As soon as Zimri began to reign and was seated on the throne, he struck down the entire household of
Baasha. He did not leave a single male, whether a
kinsman or friend.
But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and there a
wall fell upon twenty and seven thousand of the men that were left. And Ben-
hadad fled, and came into the city, into an inner chamber.
The rest of them fled into the city of Aphek, where the
wall fell on twenty-seven thousand of the remaining men. Ben-
hadad also fled to the city and
hid in an inner room.
Behold, I will bring evil upon thee, and will take away thy
posterity, and will cut off from
Ahab him that pisseth against the
wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel,
This is what the LORD says: ‘I will bring
calamity on you and
consume your descendants; I will cut off from
Ahab every male in Israel, both slave and free.
Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his
stead, and offered him for a burnt offering upon the
wall. And there was great
indignation against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.
So he took his
firstborn son, who was to succeed him, and offered him as a burnt offering on the city
wall. And there was great
fury against the Israelites, so they withdrew and returned to their own land.
Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the
wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a
stool, and a
candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither.
Please let us make a small room
upstairs and put in it a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp for him. Then when he comes to us, he can stay there.”
And as the king of Israel was passing by upon the
wall, there
cried a woman unto him, saying, Help, my lord, O king.
As the king of Israel was passing by on the
wall, a woman
cried out to him, “Help me, my lord the king!”
And it came to pass, when the king heard the words of the woman, that he rent his clothes; and he passed by upon the
wall, and the people looked, and, behold, he had
sackcloth within upon his flesh.
When the king heard the words of the woman, he
tore his clothes. And as he passed by on the
wall, the people saw the
sackcloth under his clothes next to his skin.
For the whole house of
Ahab shall perish: and I will cut off from
Ahab him that pisseth against the
wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel:
The whole house of
Ahab will perish, and I will cut off from
Ahab every male, both slave and free, in Israel.
And he said, Throw her down. So they threw her down: and some of her blood was
sprinkled on the
wall, and on the horses: and he
trode her under foot.
“Throw her down!”
yelled Jehu. So they threw her down, and her blood splattered on the
wall and on the horses as they
trampled her underfoot.
And Jehoash king of Israel took
Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Jehoash the son of
Ahaziah, at Beth-shemesh, and came to Jerusalem, and
brake down the
wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim unto the corner gate, four hundred cubits.
There at Beth-shemesh, Jehoash king of Israel captured
Amaziah king of Judah, the son of
Joash, the son of
Ahaziah. Then Jehoash went to Jerusalem and broke down the
wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate—a section of four hundred cubits.
Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna, and Joah, unto
Rab-shakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the
Syrian language; for we understand it: and talk not with us in the Jews’ language in the ears of the people that are on the
wall.
Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, along with Shebnah and Joah, said to the
Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in
Aramaic, since we understand it. Do not speak with us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people on the
wall.”
But
Rab-shakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the
wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own
piss with you.
But the
Rabshakeh replied, “Has my master sent me to speak these words only to you and your master, and not to the men sitting on the
wall, who are destined with you to eat their own dung and drink their own
urine?”
Then he turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto the LORD, saying,
Then
Hezekiah turned his face to the
wall and prayed to the LORD, saying,
And it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he, and all his host, against Jerusalem, and pitched against it; and they built forts against it round about.
So in the ninth year of
Zedekiah’s reign, on the tenth day of the tenth month,
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with his entire army. They
encamped outside the city and built a siege
wall all around it.
And the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled by night by the way of the gate between two walls, which is by the king’s garden: (now the Chaldees were against the city round about:) and the king went the way toward the plain.
Then the city was breached; and though the Chaldeans had surrounded the city, all the men of war fled by night by way of the gate between the two walls near the king’s garden. They headed toward the Arabah,
And all the army of the Chaldees, that were with the captain of the guard,
brake down the
walls of Jerusalem round about.
And the whole army of the Chaldeans under the captain of the guard broke down the walls around Jerusalem.
And he built the city round about, even from
Millo round about: and
Joab repaired the rest of the city.
He built up the city around it, from the supporting terraces to the surrounding
wall, while
Joab restored the rest of the city.
Even three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of
Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the
walls of the houses
withal:
three thousand talents of gold (the gold of
Ophir) and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the
walls of the buildings,
He overlaid also the house, the beams, the posts, and the walls thereof, and the doors thereof, with gold; and graved cherubims on the walls.
He overlaid its beams, thresholds,
walls, and doors with gold, and he carved
cherubim on the
walls.
And the wings of the cherubims were twenty cubits long: one wing of the one
cherub was five cubits, reaching to the
wall of the house: and the other wing was likewise five cubits, reaching to the wing of the other
cherub.
The total wingspan of the
cherubim was twenty cubits. One wing of the first
cherub was five cubits long and touched the
wall of the temple, and its other wing was five cubits long and touched the wing of the other
cherub.
And one wing of the other
cherub was five cubits, reaching to the
wall of the house: and the other wing was five cubits also, joining to the wing of the other
cherub.
The wing of the second
cherub also measured five cubits and touched the
wall of the temple, while its other wing measured five cubits and touched the wing of the first
cherub.
Also he built Beth-horon the upper, and Beth-horon the
nether,
fenced cities, with
walls, gates, and bars;
He rebuilt Upper and Lower Beth-horon as fortified cities with walls, gates, and bars,
Therefore he said unto Judah, Let us build these cities, and make about them
walls, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet before us; because we have sought the LORD our God, we have sought him, and he hath given us rest on every side. So they built and
prospered.
So he said to the people of Judah, “Let us build these cities and
surround them with
walls and towers, with doors and bars. The land is still ours because we have sought the LORD our God. We have sought Him and He has given us rest on every side.” So they built and
prospered.
And
Joash the king of Israel took
Amaziah king of Judah, the son of
Joash, the son of
Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and
brake down the
wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits.
There at Beth-shemesh, Jehoash king of Israel captured
Amaziah king of Judah, the son of
Joash, the son of
Jehoahaz. Then Jehoash brought him to Jerusalem and broke down the
wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate—a section of four hundred cubits.
And he went forth and
warred against the Philistines, and
brake down the
wall of
Gath, and the
wall of Jabneh, and the
wall of
Ashdod, and built cities about
Ashdod, and among the Philistines.
Uzziah went out to
wage war against the Philistines, and he
tore down the
walls of
Gath, Jabneh, and
Ashdod. Then he built cities near
Ashdod and among the Philistines.
Moreover Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the corner gate, and at the valley gate, and at the turning of the wall, and fortified them.
Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the Corner Gate, the Valley Gate, and the angle in the wall, and he fortified them.
He built the high gate of the house of the LORD, and on the wall of Ophel he built much.
Jotham rebuilt the Upper Gate of the house of the LORD, and he worked extensively on the wall at the hill of Ophel.
Also he strengthened himself, and built up all the
wall that was broken, and raised it up to the towers, and another
wall without, and repaired
Millo in the city of David, and made darts and shields in abundance.
Then
Hezekiah worked
resolutely to rebuild all the broken sections of the
wall and to raise up towers on it. He also built an outer
wall and
reinforced the supporting terraces of the City of David, and he produced an abundance of weapons and shields.
Then they
cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ speech unto the people of Jerusalem that were on the
wall, to
affright them, and to trouble them; that they might take the city.
Then the Assyrians called out loudly in Hebrew to the people of Jerusalem who were on the
wall, to
frighten and
terrify them in order to capture the city.
Now after this he built a
wall without the city of David, on the west side of
Gihon, in the valley, even to the entering in at the fish gate, and compassed about Ophel, and raised it up a very great height, and put captains of war in all the
fenced cities of Judah.
After this,
Manasseh rebuilt the outer
wall of the City of David from west of
Gihon in the valley to the entrance of the Fish Gate, and he brought it around the hill of Ophel and
heightened it considerably. He also stationed military commanders in all the fortified cities of Judah.
And they burnt the house of God, and
brake down the
wall of Jerusalem, and burnt all the palaces thereof with fire, and destroyed all the goodly vessels thereof.
Then the Chaldeans set fire to the house of God and broke down the wall of Jerusalem. They burned down all the palaces and destroyed every article of value.
Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the
rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the
walls thereof, and joined the foundations.
Let it be known to the king that the Jews who came from you to us have returned to Jerusalem. And they are rebuilding that
rebellious and wicked city, restoring its
walls, and repairing its foundations.
Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the
walls set up again, then will they not pay
toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt
endamage the revenue of the kings.
Let it now be known to the king that if that city is rebuilt and its
walls are restored, they will not pay tribute, duty, or
toll, and the royal treasury will suffer.
We
certify the king that, if this city be builded again, and the
walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.
We
advise the king that if this city is rebuilt and its
walls are restored, you will have no dominion west of the Euphrates.
At the same time came to them Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shethar-boznai, and their companions, and said thus unto them, Who hath commanded you to build this house, and to make up this wall?
At that time Tattenai the governor of the region west of the Euphrates, Shethar-bozenai, and their associates went to the Jews and asked, “Who authorized you to rebuild this temple and restore this structure?”
Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of
Judea, to the house of the great God, which is builded with great stones, and timber is laid in the
walls, and this work goeth fast on, and prospereth in their hands.
Let it be known to the king that we went into the province of Judah, to the house of the great God. The people are rebuilding it with large stones, and placing timbers in the
walls. This work is being carried out
diligently and is
prospering in their hands.
Then asked we those elders, and said unto them thus, Who commanded you to build this house, and to make up these walls?
So we questioned the elders and asked, “Who authorized you to rebuild this temple and restore this structure?”
For we were
bondmen; yet our God hath not
forsaken us in our
bondage, but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a
reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the desolations thereof, and to give us a
wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.
Though we are slaves, our God has not
forsaken us in our
bondage, but He has extended to us grace in the sight of the kings of Persia, giving us new life to rebuild the house of our God and repair its ruins, and giving us a
wall of protection in Judah and Jerusalem.
And they said unto me, The
remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great
affliction and reproach: the
wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.

wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates are burned with fire.”
And a letter unto
Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which
appertained to the house, and for the
wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.
And may I have a letter to
Asaph, keeper of the king’s forest, so that he will give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel to the temple, for the city
wall, and for the house I will occupy.” And because the
gracious hand of my God was upon me, the king granted my requests.
And I went out by night by the gate of the valley, even before the

So I went out at night through the Valley Gate toward the Well of the Serpent and the Dung Gate, and I
inspected the
walls of Jerusalem that had been broken down and the gates that had been destroyed by fire.
Then went I up in the night by the
brook, and viewed the
wall, and turned back, and entered by the gate of the valley, and so returned.
so I went up the valley by night and
inspected the
wall. Then I headed back and reentered through the Valley Gate.
Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.
Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in. Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned down. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, so that we will no longer be a disgrace.”
