And next to him repaired Ezer the son of Jeshua, the ruler of
Mizpah, another piece over against the going up to the armoury at the turning of the
wall.
And next to him, Ezer son of Jeshua, ruler of
Mizpah, repaired another section opposite the
Ascent to the
Armory, near the angle in the
wall.
After him
Baruch the son of Zabbai earnestly repaired the other piece, from the turning of the
wall unto the door of the house of Eliashib the high priest.
Next to him,
Baruch son of Zabbai
diligently repaired another section, from the angle to the
doorway of the house of Eliashib the high priest.
After him repaired Binnui the son of Henadad another piece, from the house of
Azariah unto the turning of the
wall, even unto the corner.
After him, Binnui son of Henadad repaired another section, from the house of
Azariah to the angle and the corner,
Palal the son of Uzai, over against the turning of the wall, and the tower which lieth out from the king’s high house, that was by the court of the prison. After him Pedaiah the son of Parosh.
and Palal son of Uzai made repairs opposite the angle and the tower that juts out from the upper palace of the king near the
courtyard of the guard. Next to him, Pedaiah son of Parosh
After them the Tekoites repaired another piece, over against the great tower that lieth out, even unto the wall of Ophel.
And next to them, the Tekoites repaired another section, from a point opposite the great tower that juts out to the wall of Ophel.
And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they
fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the
rubbish which are burned?
before his associates and the army of Samaria, saying, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Can they restore the
wall by themselves? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they complete it in a day? Can they bring these burnt stones back to life from the mounds of
rubble?”
Now
Tobiah the
Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break down their stone
wall.
Then
Tobiah the
Ammonite, who was beside him, said, “If even a fox were to
climb up on what they are building, it would break down their
wall of stones!”
So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.
So we rebuilt the wall until all of it was joined together up to half its height, for the people had a mind to work.
But it came to pass, that when
Sanballat, and
Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the
Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the
walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very
wroth,
When
Sanballat and
Tobiah, together with the Arabs,
Ammonites, and Ashdodites, heard that the repair to the
walls of Jerusalem was progressing and that the gaps were being closed, they were
furious,
And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much
rubbish; so that we are not able to build the
wall.
Meanwhile, the people of Judah said: “The strength of the laborer fails, and there is so much
rubble that we will never be able to rebuild the
wall.”
Therefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, and on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
So I stationed men behind the lowest sections of the
wall, at the
vulnerable areas. I stationed them by families with their swords, spears, and bows.
And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to
nought, that we returned all of us to the
wall, every one unto his work.
When our enemies heard that we were aware of their scheme and that God had
frustrated it, each of us returned to his own work on the
wall.
They which builded on the
wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that
laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.
who were rebuilding the wall. The laborers who carried materials worked with one hand and held a weapon with the other.
And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another.
Then I said to the nobles, the officials, and the rest of the people: “The work is great and extensive, and we are spread out far from one another along the wall.
Yea, also I continued in the work of this
wall, neither bought we any land: and all my servants were gathered thither unto the work.
Instead, I devoted myself to the construction of the wall, and all my servants were gathered there for the work; we did not acquire any land.
Now it came to pass, when
Sanballat, and
Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the
wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates;)
When
Sanballat,
Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies heard that I had rebuilt the
wall and not a
gap was left—though to that time I had not yet
installed the doors in the gates—
Wherein was written, It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to
rebel: for which cause thou buildest the
wall, that thou mayest be their king, according to these words.
that read: “It is reported among the nations—and Geshem agrees—that you and the Jews are
plotting to revolt, and this is why you are building the
wall. According to these reports, you are to become their king,
So the
wall was finished in the twenty and fifth day of the month
Elul, in fifty and two days.
So the
wall was completed in fifty-two days, on the twenty-fifth of
Elul.
Now it came to pass, when the
wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the
porters and the singers and the Levites were appointed,
When the wall had been rebuilt and I had set the doors in place, the gatekeepers, singers, and Levites were appointed.
And at the
dedication of the
wall of Jerusalem they sought the Levites out of all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem, to keep the
dedication with
gladness, both with thanksgivings, and with singing, with cymbals,
psalteries, and with harps.
And the priests and the Levites
purified themselves, and
purified the people, and the gates, and the
wall.
After the priests and Levites had
purified themselves, they
purified the people, the gates, and the
wall.
Then I brought up the princes of Judah upon the
wall, and appointed two great companies of them that gave
thanks,
whereof one went on the right hand upon the
wall toward the dung gate:
Then I brought the leaders of Judah up on the
wall, and I appointed two great
thanksgiving choirs. One was to proceed along the top of the
wall to the right, toward the Dung Gate.
And at the fountain gate, which was over against them, they went up by the stairs of the city of David, at the going up of the wall, above the house of David, even unto the water gate eastward.
At the Fountain Gate they
climbed the steps of the City of David on the
ascent to the
wall and passed above the house of David to the Water Gate on the east.
And the other company of them that gave
thanks went over against them, and I after them, and the half of the people upon the
wall, from beyond the tower of the furnaces even unto the broad
wall;
The second
thanksgiving choir proceeded to the left, and I followed it with half the people along the top of the
wall, past the Tower of the Ovens to the Broad
Wall,
Then I
testified against them, and said unto them, Why
lodge ye about the
wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath.
but I
warned them, “Why are you camping in front of the
wall? If you do it again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on, they did not return on the Sabbath.
Which make oil within their
walls, and
tread their winepresses, and suffer
thirst.
For by thee I have run through a
troop; and by my God have I
leaped over a
wall.
For in You I can charge an army, and with my God I can scale a wall.
Do good in thy good pleasure unto
Zion: build thou the
walls of Jerusalem.
In Your good pleasure, cause
Zion to
prosper; build up the
walls of Jerusalem.
Day and night they go about it upon the walls thereof: mischief also and sorrow are in the midst of it.
Day and night they
encircle the
walls, while
malice and trouble lie within.
How long will ye imagine mischief against a man? ye shall be slain all of you: as a bowing
wall shall ye be, and as a
tottering fence.
He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an
heap.
He split the sea and brought them through; He set the waters upright like a wall.
Why hast thou then broken down her hedges, so that all they which pass by the way do
pluck her?
Why have You broken down its
walls, so that all who pass by
pick its fruit?
Thou hast broken down all his hedges; thou hast brought his strong holds to ruin.
You have broken down all his
walls; You have reduced his strongholds to
rubble.
Peace be within thy walls, and prosperity within thy palaces.
May there be peace within your walls, and prosperity inside your fortresses.”
That our oxen may be strong to labour; that there be no breaking in, nor going out; that there be no
complaining in our streets.
Our oxen will bear great loads. There will be no breach in the
walls, no going into captivity, and no cry of
lament in our streets.
The rich man’s wealth is his strong city, and as an high
wall in his own
conceit.
A rich man’s wealth is his fortified city; it is like a high wall in his imagination.
And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and
nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone
wall thereof was broken down.
Thorns had grown up everywhere, thistles had covered the ground, and the stone wall was broken down.
He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.
Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who does not control his temper.
He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and
whoso breaketh an
hedge, a serpent shall
bite him.
He who digs a pit may fall into it, and he who breaches a
wall may be
bitten by a
snake.
My beloved is like a
roe or a young
hart: behold, he standeth behind our
wall, he looketh forth at the windows,
shewing himself through the
lattice.
The
watchmen that went about the city found me, they
smote me, they wounded me; the keepers of the
walls took away my
veil from me.
If she be a
wall, we will build upon her a palace of silver: and if she be a door, we will inclose her with boards of
cedar.
If she is a
wall, we will build a tower of silver upon her. If she is a door, we will
enclose her with panels of
cedar.
I am a wall, and my breasts like towers: then was I in his eyes as one that found favour.
I am a wall, and my breasts are like towers. So I have become in his eyes like one who brings peace.
And upon every high tower, and upon every
fenced wall,
against every high tower, against every fortified wall,
And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my
vineyard: I will take away the
hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the
wall thereof, and it shall be
trodden down:
Now I will tell you what I am about to do to My
vineyard: I will take away its
hedge, and it will be consumed; I will
tear down its
wall, and it will be
trampled.
For it is a day of trouble, and of
treading down, and of
perplexity by the Lord GOD of hosts in the valley of vision, breaking down the
walls, and of crying to the mountains.
For the Lord GOD of Hosts has set a day of
tumult and
trampling and confusion in the Valley of Vision— of breaking down the
walls and crying to the mountains.
Ye have seen also the breaches of the city of David, that they are many: and ye gathered together the waters of the lower
pool.
You saw that there were many breaches in the
walls of the City of David. You collected water from the lower
pool.
And ye have numbered the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses have ye broken down to
fortify the
wall.
You counted the houses of Jerusalem and
tore them down to
strengthen the
wall.
Ye made also a
ditch between the two
walls for the water of the old
pool: but ye have not looked unto the maker thereof, neither had respect unto him that fashioned it long ago.
You built a
reservoir between the
walls for the waters of the ancient
pool, but you did not look to the One who made it, or consider Him who
planned it long ago.
For thou hast been a strength to the poor, a strength to the
needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the
wall.
For You have been a refuge for the poor, a
stronghold for the
needy in distress, a refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat. For the breath of the
ruthless is like rain against a
wall,
And the fortress of the high fort of thy walls shall he bring down, lay low, and bring to the ground, even to the dust.
The high-walled fortress will be brought down, cast to the ground, into the dust.
In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah; We have a strong city; salvation will God
appoint for
walls and bulwarks.
In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah: We have a strong city; salvation is established as its walls and ramparts.
Therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant.
this iniquity of yours is like a breach about to fail, a
bulge in a high
wall, whose
collapse will come suddenly— in an instant!
Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto
Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants in the
Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jews’ language, in the ears of the people that are on the
wall.
Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the
Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in
Aramaic, since we understand it. Do not speak to us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people on the
wall.”
But
Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men that sit upon the
wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own
piss with you?
But the
Rabshakeh replied, “Has my master sent me to speak these words only to you and your master, and not to the men sitting on the
wall, who are destined with you to eat their own dung and drink their own
urine?”
Then
Hezekiah turned his face toward the
wall, and prayed unto the LORD,
Then
Hezekiah turned his face to the
wall and prayed to the LORD,
Behold, I have
graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy
walls are continually before me.
Behold, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; your walls are ever before Me.
And I will make thy windows of agates, and thy gates of carbuncles, and all thy borders of pleasant stones.
I will make your pinnacles of
rubies, your gates of
sparkling jewels, and all your
walls of precious stones.
Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my
walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an
everlasting name, that shall not be cut off.
I will give them, in My house and within My
walls, a
memorial and a name better than that of sons and daughters. I will give them an
everlasting name that will not be cut off.
Like the blind, we feel our way along the
wall,
groping like those without eyes. We
stumble at
midday as in the
twilight; among the vigorous we are like the dead.
And the sons of strangers shall build up thy
walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee: for in my wrath I
smote thee, but in my favour have I had mercy on thee.
Foreigners will rebuild your walls, and their kings will serve you. Although I struck you in anger, yet in favor I will show you mercy.
Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation, and thy gates Praise.
No longer will violence be heard in your land, nor ruin or destruction within your borders. But you will name your walls Salvation and your gates Praise.
I have set
watchmen upon thy
walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the LORD, keep not silence,
On your
walls, O Jerusalem, I have posted
watchmen; they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the LORD shall take no rest for
yourselves,
For, lo, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north, saith the LORD; and they shall come, and they shall set every one his throne at the entering of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all the walls thereof round about, and against all the cities of Judah.
For I am about to
summon all the clans and kingdoms of the north,” declares the LORD. “Their kings will come and set up their thrones at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem. They will attack all her surrounding
walls and all the other cities of Judah.
For, behold, I have made thee this day a defenced city, and an iron
pillar, and
brasen walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and against the people of the land.
Now behold, this day I have made you like a fortified city, an iron
pillar, and bronze
walls against the whole land—against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the people of the land.
Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her battlements; for they are not the LORD’S.
Go up through her vineyards and
ravage them, but do not finish them off. Strip off her branches, for they do not belong to the LORD.
O daughter of my people, dress
yourselves in
sackcloth and roll in ashes.
Mourn with bitter
wailing, as you would for an only son, for suddenly the destroyer will come upon us.
And I will make thee unto this people a
fenced brasen wall: and they shall fight against thee, but they shall not prevail against thee: for I am with thee to save thee and to deliver thee, saith the LORD.
Then I will make you a wall to this people, a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you to save and deliver you, declares the LORD.
Thus saith the LORD God of Israel; Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands,
wherewith ye fight against the king of Babylon, and against the Chaldeans, which
besiege you without the
walls, and I will
assemble them into the midst of this city.
this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I will turn against you the weapons of war in your hands, with which you are fighting the king of Babylon and the Chaldeans who
besiege you outside the
wall, and I will
assemble their forces in the center of this city.
Howl, ye
shepherds, and cry; and
wallow yourselves in the ashes, ye principal of the flock: for the days of your slaughter and of your dispersions are accomplished; and ye shall fall like a pleasant vessel.
Wail, you
shepherds, and cry out; roll in the dust, you leaders of the flock. For the days of your slaughter have come; you will fall and be
shattered like fine pottery.
And it came to pass, that when
Zedekiah the king of Judah saw them, and all the men of war, then they fled, and went forth out of the city by night, by the way of the king’s garden, by the gate
betwixt the two
walls: and he went out the way of the plain.
When
Zedekiah king of Judah and all the soldiers saw them, they fled. They left the city at night by way of the king’s garden, through the gate between the two
walls, and they went out along the route to the Arabah.
And the Chaldeans burned the king’s house, and the houses of the people, with fire, and
brake down the
walls of Jerusalem.
The Chaldeans set fire to the palace of the king and to the houses of the people, and they broke down the walls of Jerusalem.
Howl, O
Heshbon, for
Ai is
spoiled: cry, ye daughters of Rabbah,
gird you with
sackcloth;
lament, and run to and
fro by the hedges; for their king shall go into captivity, and his priests and his princes together.
Wail, O
Heshbon, for
Ai has been destroyed; cry out, O daughters of Rabbah! Put on
sackcloth and
mourn; run back and forth within your
walls, for Milcom will go into exile together with his priests and officials.
And I will
kindle a fire in the
wall of Damascus, and it shall
consume the palaces of Ben-
hadad.
“I will set fire to the
walls of Damascus; it will
consume the fortresses of Ben-
hadad.”
Shout against her round about: she hath given her hand: her foundations are fallen, her
walls are thrown down: for it is the
vengeance of the LORD: take
vengeance upon her; as she hath done, do unto her.
Raise a war cry against her on every side! She has thrown up her hands in surrender; her towers have fallen; her
walls are
torn down. Since this is the
vengeance of the LORD, take out your
vengeance upon her; as she has done, do the same to her.
Set up the standard upon the
walls of Babylon, make the watch strong, set up the
watchmen, prepare the ambushes: for the LORD hath both devised and done that which he spake against the inhabitants of Babylon.
Raise a
banner against the
walls of Babylon; post the guard; station the
watchmen; prepare the
ambush. For the LORD has both devised and accomplished what He spoke against the people of Babylon.
And I will
punish Bel in Babylon, and I will bring forth out of his mouth that which he hath
swallowed up: and the nations shall not flow together any more unto him:
yea, the
wall of Babylon shall fall.
I will
punish Bel in Babylon. I will make him
spew out what he
swallowed. The nations will no longer stream to him; even the
wall of Babylon will fall.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The broad
walls of Babylon shall be utterly broken, and her high gates shall be burned with fire; and the people shall labour in vain, and the
folk in the fire, and they shall be
weary.
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Babylon’s thick
walls will be leveled, and her high gates consumed by fire. So the labor of the people will be for nothing; the nations will
exhaust themselves to fuel the flames.”
And it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came, he and all his army, against Jerusalem, and pitched against it, and built forts against it round about.
So in the ninth year of
Zedekiah’s reign, on the tenth day of the tenth month,
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with his entire army. They
encamped outside the city and built a siege
wall all around it.
Then the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled, and went forth out of the city by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the king’s garden; (now the Chaldeans were by the city round about:) and they went by the way of the plain.
Then the city was breached; and though the Chaldeans had surrounded the city, all the men of war fled the city by night by way of the gate between the two walls near the king’s garden. They headed toward the Arabah,
And all the army of the Chaldeans, that were with the captain of the guard,
brake down all the
walls of Jerusalem round about.
And the whole army of the Chaldeans under the captain of the guard broke down all the walls around Jerusalem.
The Lord hath cast off his altar, he hath
abhorred his sanctuary, he hath given up into the hand of the enemy the
walls of her palaces; they have made a noise in the house of the LORD, as in the day of a solemn feast.
The Lord has rejected His altar; He has abandoned His sanctuary; He has delivered the
walls of her palaces into the hand of the enemy. They have raised a
shout in the house of the LORD as on the day of an appointed feast.
The LORD hath purposed to destroy the
wall of the daughter of
Zion: he hath stretched out a line, he hath not withdrawn his hand from destroying: therefore he made the
rampart and the
wall to
lament; they
languished together.
The LORD determined to destroy the
wall of the Daughter of
Zion. He stretched out a measuring line and did not withdraw His hand from destroying. He made the ramparts and
walls lament; together they waste away.
Their heart
cried unto the Lord, O
wall of the daughter of
Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night: give
thyself no rest; let not the apple of thine eye cease.
The hearts of the people cry out to the Lord. O
wall of the Daughter of
Zion, let your tears run down like a river day and night. Give
yourself no relief, and your eyes no rest.
He hath
hedged me about, that I cannot get out: he hath made my chain heavy.
He has
walled me in so I cannot escape; He has
weighed me down with chains.
And lay siege against it, and build a fort against it, and cast a mount against it; set the camp also against it, and set
battering rams against it round about.
Then lay siege against it: Construct a siege
wall, build a
ramp to it, set up camps against it, and place
battering rams around it on all sides.
Moreover take thou unto thee an iron pan, and set it for a wall of iron between thee and the city: and set thy face against it, and it shall be besieged, and thou shalt lay siege against it. This shall be a sign to the house of Israel.
Then take an iron plate and set it up as an iron
wall between
yourself and the city. Turn your face toward it so that it is under siege, and
besiege it. This will be a sign to the house of Israel.
A third part of thee shall die with the
pestilence, and with famine shall they be consumed in the midst of thee: and a third part shall fall by the sword round about thee and I will
scatter a third part into all the winds, and I will draw out a sword after them.
A third of your people will die by plague or be consumed by famine within you, a third will fall by the sword outside your
walls, and a third I will
scatter to every wind and
unleash a sword behind them.
And he brought me to the door of the court; and when I looked, behold a hole in the wall.
Then He brought me to the entrance to the court, and I looked and saw a hole in the wall.
Then said he unto me, Son of man,
dig now in the
wall: and when I had
digged in the
wall, behold a door.
“Son of man,” He told me, “
dig through the
wall.” So I
dug through the
wall and discovered a
doorway.
So I went in and saw; and behold every form of
creeping things, and
abominable beasts, and all the idols of the house of Israel, pourtrayed upon the
wall round about.
So I went in and looked, and engraved all around the
wall was every kind of
crawling creature and
detestable beast, along with all the idols of the house of Israel.
Dig thou through the
wall in their sight, and carry out thereby.
As they watch,
dig through the
wall and carry your belongings out through it.
And I did so as I was commanded: I brought forth my stuff by day, as stuff for captivity, and in the even I
digged through the
wall with mine hand; I brought it forth in the
twilight, and I bare it upon my shoulder in their sight.
So I did as I was commanded. I brought out my bags for exile by day, and in the evening I
dug through the
wall by hand. I took my belongings out at
dusk, carrying them on my shoulder as they watched.
And the prince that is among them shall bear upon his shoulder in the
twilight, and shall go forth: they shall
dig through the
wall to carry out thereby: he shall cover his face, that he see not the ground with his eyes.
And at
dusk the prince among them will lift his bags to his shoulder and go out. They will
dig through the
wall to bring him out. He will cover his face so he cannot see the land.
Ye have not gone up into the gaps, neither made up the
hedge for the house of Israel to stand in the battle in the day of the LORD.
You did not go up to the gaps or restore the wall around the house of Israel so that it would stand in the battle on the Day of the LORD.
Because, even because they have
seduced my people, saying, Peace; and there was no peace; and one built up a
wall, and, lo, others
daubed it with untempered
morter:
Because they have led My people
astray, saying, ‘Peace,’ when there is no peace, and
whitewashing any
flimsy wall that is built,
Say unto them which
daub it with untempered
morter, that it shall fall: there shall be an overflowing shower; and ye, O great hailstones, shall fall; and a
stormy wind shall
rend it.
Surely when the
wall has fallen, you will not be asked, ‘Where is the
whitewash with which you covered it?’
