When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.
And when
everyone was full, He said to His disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over, so that nothing will be
wasted.”
And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea,
When evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,
And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward
Capernaum. And it
was now dark, and Jesus
was not come to them.
got into a boat, and started across the sea to
Capernaum. It
was already dark, and Jesus had not yet gone out to them.
And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that
blew.
A strong wind
was blowing, and the sea grew
agitated.
Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship
was at the land
whither they went.
Then they were willing to take Him into the boat, and at once the boat reached the shore where they were heading.
The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there
was none other boat there, save that one
whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone;
The next day, the crowd that had remained on the other side of the sea realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not boarded it with His disciples, but they had gone away alone.
When the people therefore saw that Jesus
was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to
Capernaum, seeking for Jesus.
So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor His disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to
Capernaum to look for Him.
Then Jesus said unto them,
Verily,
verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.
Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.
What and if ye shall see the Son of man
ascend up where he
was before?
Then what will happen if you see the Son of Man
ascend to where He
was before?
He spake of
Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it
was that should
betray him, being one of the twelve.
He
was speaking about
Judas, the son of Simon
Iscariot. For although
Judas was one of the Twelve, he
was later to
betray Jesus.
Now the Jews’ feast of tabernacles was at hand.
However, the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was near.
And there
was much
murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said,
Nay; but he deceiveth the people.
Many in the crowds were
whispering about Him. Some said, “He is a good man.” But others replied, “No, He deceives the people.”
Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.
So they tried to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.
(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost
was not yet given; because that Jesus
was not yet
glorified.)
He
was speaking about the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. For the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been
glorified.
Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of
Bethlehem, where David
was?
Doesn’t the Scripture say that the Christ will come from the line of David and from
Bethlehem, the village where David lived?”
So there was a division among the people because of him.
So there was division in the crowd because of Jesus.
Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,)
Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who himself
was one of them, asked,
They say unto him, Master, this woman
was taken in
adultery, in the very act.
and said, “Teacher, this woman
was caught in the act of
adultery.
And they which heard it, being
convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus
was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
When they heard this, they began to go away one by one, beginning with the older ones, until only Jesus was left, with the woman standing there.
These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.
He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts, near the treasury. Yet no one seized Him, because His hour had not yet come.
They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.
They did not understand that He was telling them about the Father.
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He
was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a
liar, and the father of it.
You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out his desires. He
was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to
uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a
liar and the father of lies.
Your father Abraham
rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and
was glad.
Your father Abraham
rejoiced that he would see My day. He saw it and
was glad.”
Jesus said unto them,
Verily,
verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham
was, I am.
“Truly, truly, I tell you,” Jesus declared, “before Abraham was born, I am!”
Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus
hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
At this, they
picked up stones to throw at Him. But Jesus
was hidden and went out of the temple area.
And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.
Now as Jesus was passing by, He saw a man blind from birth,
And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
and His disciples asked Him, “
Rabbi, who
sinned, this man or his parents, that he
was born blind?”
And said unto him, Go,
wash in the
pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and
washed, and came seeing.
Then He told him, “Go,
wash in the
Pool of Siloam” (which means “Sent”). So the man went and
washed, and came back seeing.
The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he
was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and
begged?
At this, his neighbors and those who had formerly seen him
begging began to ask, “Isn’t this the man who used to sit and
beg?”
Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he.
Some claimed that he was, but others said, “No, he just looks like him.” But the man kept saying, “I am the one.”
He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and
anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the
pool of Siloam, and
wash: and I went and
washed, and I received sight.
He answered, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and
anointed my eyes, and He told me to go to Siloam and
wash. So I went and
washed and received my sight.”
They brought to the
Pharisees the man who had been blind.
And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.
Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened his eyes was a Sabbath.
Then again the
Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I
washed, and do see.
So the
Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. The man answered, “He put mud on my eyes, and I
washed, and now I can see.”
Therefore said some of the
Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a
sinner do such miracles? And there
was a division among them.
Because of this, some of the
Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for He does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a sinful man perform such signs?” And there
was division among them.
They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.
So once again they asked the man who had been blind, “What do you say about Him, since it was your eyes He opened?” “He is a prophet,” the man replied.
And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say
was born blind? how then
doth he now see?
and asked, “Is this your son, the one you say was born blind? So how is it that he can now see?”
His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:
His parents answered, “We know he is our son, and we know he was born blind.
These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did
confess that he
was Christ, he should be put out of the
synagogue.
His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews. For the Jews had already determined that
anyone who
confessed Jesus as the Christ would be put out of the
synagogue.
Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.
That was why his parents said, “He is old enough. Ask him.”
Then again called they the man that
was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a
sinner.
So a second time they called for the man who had been blind and said, “Give glory to God! We know that this man is a
sinner.”
He answered and said, Whether he be a
sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I
was blind, now I see.
He answered, “Whether He is a
sinner I do not know. There is one thing I do know: I
was blind, but now I see!”
Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.
Never before has
anyone heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind.
They answered and said unto him, Thou
wast altogether born in sins, and
dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.
They replied, “You were born in utter sin, and you are
instructing us?” And they threw him out.
This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them.
Jesus spoke to them using this illustration, but they did not understand what He was telling them.
There was a division therefore again among the Jews for these sayings.
Again there was division among the Jews because of Jesus’ message.
And it
was at Jerusalem the feast of the
dedication, and it
was winter.
At that time the Feast of
Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It
was winter,
And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon’s
porch.
and Jesus
was walking in the temple courts in Solomon’s
Colonnade.
And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no
miracle: but all things that John spake of this man were true.
Many came to Him and said, “Although John never performed a sign, everything he said about this man was true.”
At this time a man named
Lazarus was sick. He lived in
Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister
Martha.
When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.
So on hearing that
Lazarus was sick, He stayed where He
was for two days,
Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
They thought that Jesus
was talking about actual sleep, but He
was speaking about the death of
Lazarus.
And I am
glad for your sakes that I
was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
and for your sake I am
glad I
was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”
Now
Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:
Now
Bethany was near Jerusalem, a little less than two miles away,
Then
Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus
was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.
So when
Martha heard that Jesus
was coming, she went out to meet Him; but Mary stayed at home.
She saith unto him,
Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
“
Yes, Lord,” she answered, “I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who
was to come into the world.”
Now Jesus
was not yet come into the town, but
was in that place where
Martha met him.
Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but
was still at the place where
Martha had met Him.
The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up
hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to
weep there.
When the Jews who were in the house
consoling Mary saw how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she
was going to the tomb to
mourn there.
Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
When Mary came to Jesus and saw Him, she fell at His feet and said, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”
When Jesus therefore saw her
weeping, and the Jews also
weeping which came with her, he
groaned in the spirit, and
was troubled,
When Jesus saw her
weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also
weeping, He
was deeply moved in spirit and troubled.
Jesus therefore again
groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It
was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
Jesus, once again deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.
Jesus said, Take ye away the stone.
Martha, the sister of him that
was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.
“Take away the stone,” Jesus said. “Lord, by now he stinks,” said
Martha, the sister of the dead man. “It has already been four days.”
Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead
was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I
thank thee that thou hast heard me.
So they took away the stone. Then Jesus lifted His eyes upward and said, “Father, I
thank You that You have heard Me.
And he that
was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with
graveclothes: and his face
was bound about with a
napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
The man who had been dead came out with his hands and feet bound in strips of linen, and his face
wrapped in a cloth. “
Unwrap him and let him go,” Jesus told them.
And one of them, named
Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,
But one of them, named
Caiaphas, who
was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all!
And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he
prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;
Caiaphas did not say this on his own. Instead, as high priest that year, he
was prophesying that Jesus would die for the nation,
And the Jews’
passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the
passover, to
purify themselves.
Now the Jewish
Passover was near, and many people went up from the country to Jerusalem to
purify themselves before the
Passover.
Now both the chief priests and the
Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should
shew it, that they might take him.
But the chief priests and
Pharisees had given orders that
anyone who knew where He
was must report it, so that they could arrest Him.
Then Jesus six days before the
passover came to
Bethany, where
Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.
Six days before the
Passover, Jesus came to
Bethany, the hometown of
Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead.
There they made him a
supper; and
Martha served: but
Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.
Why
was not this
ointment sold for three hundred
pence, and given to the poor?
“Why
wasn’t this
perfume sold for three hundred
denarii and the money given to the poor?”
This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he
was a
thief, and had the
bag, and bare what
was put therein.
Judas did not say this because he cared about the poor, but because he
was a
thief. As keeper of the money
bag, he used to take from what
was put into it.
Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he
was there: and they came not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might see
Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.
Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews learned that Jesus
was there. And they came not only because of Him, but also to see
Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead.
On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
The next day the great crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.
These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus
was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.
At first His disciples did not understand these things, but after Jesus
was glorified they remembered what had been done to Him, and they realized that these very things had also been written about Him.
The people therefore that
was with him when he called
Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.
Meanwhile, many people continued to
testify that they had been with Jesus when He called
Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead.
The same came therefore to Philip, which
was of
Bethsaida of
Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.
They came to Philip, who
was from
Bethsaida in
Galilee, and requested of him, “Sir, we want to see Jesus.”
Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.
In
response, Jesus said, “This voice
was not for My benefit, but yours.
This he said,
signifying what death he should die.
He said this to indicate the kind of death He was going to die.
While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.
While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of light.” After Jesus had spoken these things, He went away and was hidden from them.
That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?
This
was to
fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: “Lord, who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
Now before the feast of the
passover, when Jesus knew that his hour
was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
It
was now just before the
Passover Feast, and Jesus knew that His hour had come to leave this world and return to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the very end.
The evening meal
was underway, and the devil had already put into the heart of
Judas, the son of Simon
Iscariot, to
betray Jesus.
Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;
Jesus knew that the Father had delivered all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was returning to God.
After that, He poured water into a basin and began to
wash the disciples’ feet and dry them with the
towel that
was around Him.
Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord,
dost thou
wash my feet?
He came to Simon Peter, who asked Him, “Lord, are You going to wash my feet?”
Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.
“Never shall You wash my feet!” Peter told Him. Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with Me.”
Jesus saith to him, He that is
washed needeth not save to
wash his feet, but is clean every
whit: and ye are clean, but not all.
Jesus told him, “
Whoever has already bathed needs only to
wash his feet, and he will be completely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you.”
So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?
When Jesus had
washed their feet and put on His outer garments, He
reclined with them again and asked, “Do you know what I have done for you?
If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.
So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.
When Jesus had thus said, he
was troubled in spirit, and
testified, and said,
Verily,
verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall
betray me.
After Jesus had said this, He became troubled in spirit and
testified, “Truly, truly, I tell you, one of you will
betray Me.”
Now there
was leaning on Jesus’
bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.
One of His disciples, the one whom Jesus loved,
was reclining at His side.
Simon Peter therefore
beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.
So Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus which one He was talking about.
For some of them thought, because
Judas had the
bag, that Jesus had said unto him,
Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.
Since
Judas kept the money
bag, some thought that Jesus
was telling him to
buy what
was needed for the feast, or to give something to the poor.
He then having received the
sop went immediately out: and it
was night.
As soon as he had received the
morsel,
Judas went out into the night.
Therefore, when he
was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man
glorified, and God is
glorified in him.
But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.
But I have told you these things so that when their hour comes, you will remember that I told you about them. I did not tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.
