It is better to hear the
rebuke of the
wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.
Surely oppression maketh a
wise man
mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.
Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou
dost not
enquire wisely concerning this.
Do not say, “Why were the old days better than these?” For it is unwise of you to ask about this.
Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun.
Wisdom, like an inheritance, is good, and it benefits those who see the sun.
For
wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the
excellency of knowledge is, that
wisdom giveth life to them that have it.
For wisdom, like money, is a shelter, and the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of its owner.
Be not righteous over much; neither make
thyself over
wise: why shouldest thou destroy
thyself?
Do not be overly righteous, and do not make
yourself too
wise. Why should you destroy
yourself?
Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.
Wisdom makes the wise man stronger than ten rulers in a city.
All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.
All this I tested by
wisdom, saying, “I
resolve to be
wise.” But it was beyond me.
I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out
wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of
foolishness and madness:
I directed my mind to understand, to
explore, to search out
wisdom and explanations, and to understand the
stupidity of wickedness and the folly of madness.
Who is as the
wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? a man’s
wisdom maketh his face to
shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed.
Who is like the wise man? Who knows the interpretation of a matter? A man’s wisdom brightens his face, and the sternness of his face is changed.
Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a
wise man’s heart discerneth both time and judgment.
Whoever keeps his command will come to no
harm, and a
wise heart knows the right time and procedure.
When I applied mine heart to know
wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night
seeth sleep with his eyes:)
When I applied my mind to know wisdom and to observe the task that one performs on the earth—though his eyes do not see sleep in the day or even in the night—
Then I
beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it;
yea further; though a
wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.
I saw every work of God, and that a man is unable to
comprehend the work that is done under the sun.
Despite his efforts to search it out, he cannot find its meaning; even if the
wise man claims to know, he is unable to
comprehend.
For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them.
So I took all this to heart and concluded that the righteous and the
wise, as well as their deeds, are in God’s hands. Man does not know what lies
ahead, whether love or
hate.
Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor
device, nor knowledge, nor
wisdom, in the grave,
whither thou goest.
Whatever you find to do with your hands, do it with all your might, for in
Sheol, where you are going, there is no work or
planning or knowledge or
wisdom.
I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.
I saw something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong; neither is the bread to the wise, nor the wealth to the intelligent, nor the favor to the skillful. For time and chance happen to all.
This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me:
I have also seen this wisdom under the sun, and it was great to me:
Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.
Now a poor wise man was found in the city, and he saved the city by his wisdom. Yet no one remembered that poor man.
Then said I,
Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man’s
wisdom is
despised, and his words are not heard.
And I said, “
Wisdom is better than strength, but the
wisdom of the poor man is
despised, and his words are not
heeded.”
The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.
The calm words of the
wise are
heeded over the shouts of a ruler among fools.
Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one
sinner destroyeth much good.
Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one
sinner destroys much good.
As dead
flies bring a
stench to the
perfumer’s oil, so a little folly outweighs
wisdom and honor.
A
wise man’s heart is at his right hand; but a
fool’s heart at his left.
A
wise man’s heart inclines to the right, but the heart of a
fool to the left.
Yea also, when he that is a
fool walketh by the way, his
wisdom faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a
fool.
Even as the
fool walks along the road, his sense is lacking, and he shows
everyone that he is a
fool.
If the iron be
blunt, and he do not
whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but
wisdom is profitable to direct.
If the
axe is dull and the
blade unsharpened, more strength must be exerted, but skill produces success.
And moreover, because the preacher was
wise, he still taught the people knowledge;
yea, he gave good
heed, and sought out, and set in order many
proverbs.
Not only was the Teacher
wise, but he also taught the people knowledge; he
pondered, searched out, and arranged many
proverbs.
The words of the
wise are as goads, and as
nails fastened by the masters of
assemblies, which are given from one
shepherd.
The words of the
wise are like goads, and the anthologies of the masters are like firmly
embedded nails driven by a single
Shepherd.
Woe unto them that are
wise in their own eyes, and
prudent in their own sight!
Woe to those who are
wise in their own eyes and
clever in their own sight.
For he saith, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my
wisdom; for I am
prudent: and I have removed the bounds of the people, and have
robbed their treasures, and I have put down the inhabitants like a
valiant man:
For he says: ‘By the strength of my hand I have done this, and by my
wisdom, for I am
clever. I have removed the boundaries of nations and
plundered their treasures; like a mighty one I subdued their rulers.
And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;
The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him— the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and strength, the Spirit of knowledge and fear of the LORD.
Surely the princes of Zoan are fools, the counsel of the
wise counsellors of Pharaoh is become
brutish: how say ye unto Pharaoh, I am the son of the
wise, the son of ancient kings?
The princes of Zoan are mere fools; Pharaoh’s wise counselors give senseless advice. How can you say to Pharaoh, “I am one of the wise, a son of eastern kings”?
Where are they? where are thy wise men? and let them tell thee now, and let them know what the LORD of hosts hath purposed upon Egypt.
Where are your
wise men now? Let them tell you and
reveal what the LORD of Hosts has
planned against Egypt.
This also cometh forth from the LORD of hosts, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working.
This also comes from the LORD of Hosts, who is wonderful in counsel and excellent in wisdom.
Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the
wisdom of their
wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their
prudent men shall be
hid.
Therefore I will again
confound these people with wonder upon wonder. The
wisdom of the
wise will
vanish, and the intelligence of the intelligent will be hidden.”
Yet he also is wise, and will bring evil, and will not call back his words: but will arise against the house of the evildoers, and against the help of them that work iniquity.
Yet He too is
wise and brings
disaster; He does not call back His words. He will rise up against the house of the wicked and against the allies of evildoers.
And
wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the LORD is his
treasure.
He will be the sure foundation for your times, a
storehouse of salvation,
wisdom, and knowledge. The fear of the LORD is
Zion’s
treasure.
That frustrateth the
tokens of the liars, and maketh diviners
mad; that turneth
wise men backward, and maketh their knowledge
foolish;
who foils the signs of false prophets and makes fools of diviners, who confounds the wise and turns their knowledge into nonsense,
For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None
seeth me. Thy
wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath
perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me.
You were secure in your wickedness; you said, ‘No one sees me.’ Your
wisdom and knowledge led you
astray; you told
yourself, ‘I am, and there is none besides me.’
For my people is
foolish, they have not known me; they are
sottish children, and they have none understanding: they are
wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.
“For My people are fools; they have not known Me. They are
foolish children, without understanding. They are skilled in doing evil, but they know not how to do good.”
How do ye say, We are
wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the
scribes is in vain.
How can you say, ‘We are
wise, and the Law of the LORD is with us,’ when in fact the lying pen of the
scribes has produced a
deception?
The
wise men are
ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the LORD; and what
wisdom is in them?
The
wise will be put to shame; they will be dismayed and
trapped. Since they have rejected the word of the LORD, what
wisdom do they really have?
Who is the wise man, that may understand this? and who is he to whom the mouth of the LORD hath spoken, that he may declare it, for what the land perisheth and is burned up like a wilderness, that none passeth through?
Who is the man
wise enough to understand this? To whom has the mouth of the LORD spoken, that he may explain it? Why is the land destroyed and
scorched like a desert, so no one can pass through it?
Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:
This is what the LORD says: “Let not the
wise man
boast in his
wisdom, nor the strong man in his strength, nor the wealthy man in his riches.
Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? for to thee
doth it
appertain:
forasmuch as among all the
wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee.
Who would not fear You, O King of nations? This is Your due. For among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like You.
He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his
wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his
discretion.
The LORD made the earth by His power; He established the world by His wisdom and stretched out the heavens by His understanding.
Righteous art thou, O LORD, when I
plead with thee: yet let me talk with thee of thy judgments: Wherefore
doth the way of the wicked
prosper? wherefore are all they happy that deal very
treacherously?
Righteous are You, O LORD, when I
plead before You. Yet about Your judgments I
wish to
contend with You: Why does the way of the wicked
prosper? Why do all the faithless live at ease?
Then said they, Come, and let us
devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the
wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us
smite him with the tongue, and let us not give
heed to any of his words.
Then some said, “Come, let us make plans against Jeremiah, for the law will never be lost to the priest, nor counsel to the
wise, nor an
oracle to the prophet. Come, let us
denounce him and pay no
heed to any of his words.”
Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and
prosper, and shall
execute judgment and justice in the earth.
Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and He will reign
wisely as King and will
administer justice and righteousness in the land.
Concerning
Edom, thus saith the LORD of hosts; Is
wisdom no more in Teman? is counsel perished from the
prudent? is their
wisdom vanished?
Concerning
Edom, this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Is there no longer
wisdom in Teman? Has counsel perished from the
prudent? Has their
wisdom decayed?
A sword is upon the Chaldeans, saith the LORD, and upon the inhabitants of Babylon, and upon her princes, and upon her wise men.
A sword is against the Chaldeans, declares the LORD, against those who live in Babylon, and against her officials and wise men.
He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heaven by his understanding.
The LORD made the earth by His power; He established the world by His wisdom and stretched out the heavens by His understanding.
And I will make
drunk her princes, and her
wise men, her captains, and her rulers, and her mighty men: and they shall sleep a perpetual sleep, and not
wake, saith the King, whose name is the LORD of hosts.
I will make her princes and
wise men
drunk, along with her governors, officials, and warriors. Then they will fall
asleep forever and not
wake up,” declares the King, whose name is the LORD of Hosts.
The inhabitants of Zidon and Arvad were thy mariners: thy wise men, O Tyrus, that were in thee, were thy pilots.
The men of
Sidon and Arvad were your
oarsmen. Your men of skill, O Tyre, were there as your captains.
The ancients of Gebal and the
wise men thereof were in thee thy calkers: all the ships of the sea with their mariners were in thee to occupy thy
merchandise.
Behold, thou art wiser than Daniel; there is no secret that they can hide from thee:
Behold, you are wiser than Daniel; no secret is hidden from you!
With thy
wisdom and with thine understanding thou hast
gotten thee riches, and hast
gotten gold and silver into thy treasures:
By your
wisdom and understanding you have gained your wealth and
amassed gold and silver for your
treasuries.
By thy great
wisdom and by thy
traffick hast thou increased thy riches, and thine heart is lifted up because of thy riches:
By your great skill in trading you have increased your wealth, but your heart has grown proud because of it.
Behold, therefore I will bring strangers upon thee, the terrible of the nations: and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of thy
wisdom, and they shall
defile thy brightness.
behold, I will bring foreigners against you, the most
ruthless of nations. They will draw their swords against the beauty of your
wisdom and will
defile your
splendor.
Son of man, take up a
lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of
wisdom, and perfect in beauty.
“Son of man, take up a
lament for the king of Tyre and tell him that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘You were the seal of perfection, full of
wisdom and perfect in beauty.
Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.
Your heart grew proud of your beauty; you corrupted your
wisdom because of your
splendor; so I cast you to the earth; I made you a
spectacle before kings.
Children in whom was no
blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all
wisdom, and
cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
young men without
blemish, handsome, gifted in all
wisdom, knowledgeable, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace—and to teach them the language and literature of the Chaldeans.
As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding in every kind of literature and wisdom. And Daniel had insight into all kinds of visions and dreams.
And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.
In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king consulted them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his entire kingdom.
For this cause the king was
angry and very
furious, and commanded to destroy all the
wise men of Babylon.
This
response made the king so
furious with anger that he gave orders to destroy all the
wise men of Babylon.
And the decree went forth that the wise men should be slain; and they sought Daniel and his fellows to be slain.
So the decree went out that the
wise men were to be executed, and men went to look for Daniel and his friends to
execute them.
Then Daniel answered with counsel and
wisdom to Arioch the captain of the king’s guard, which was gone forth to
slay the
wise men of Babylon:
When Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, had gone out to
execute the
wise men of Babylon, Daniel replied with
discretion and
tact.
That they would desire
mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his fellows should not perish with the rest of the
wise men of Babylon.
urging them to
plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this
mystery, so that Daniel and his friends would not be killed with the rest of the
wise men of Babylon.
Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:
and declared: “Blessed be the name of God
forever and ever, for
wisdom and power belong to Him.
And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:
He changes the times and seasons; He removes kings and establishes them. He gives
wisdom to the
wise and knowledge to the
discerning.
I
thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me
wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king’s matter.
To You, O God of my fathers, I give
thanks and praise, because You have given me
wisdom and power. And now You have made known to me what we have requested, for You have made known to us the dream of the king.”
Therefore Daniel went in unto Arioch, whom the king had ordained to destroy the
wise men of Babylon: he went and said thus unto him; Destroy not the
wise men of Babylon: bring me in before the king, and I will
shew unto the king the interpretation.
Therefore Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the
wise men of Babylon, and said to him, “Do not
execute the
wise men of Babylon! Bring me before the king, and I will give him the interpretation.”
Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, The secret which the king hath demanded cannot the
wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, the soothsayers,
shew unto the king;
Daniel answered the king, “No
wise man,
enchanter, medium, or
magician can explain to the king the
mystery of which he inquires.
But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but for their sakes that shall make known the interpretation to the king, and that thou mightest know the thoughts of thy heart.
And to me this
mystery has been revealed, not because I have more
wisdom than any man alive, but in order that the interpretation might be made known to the king, and that you may understand the thoughts of your mind.
Then the king made Daniel a great man, and gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon.
Then the king promoted Daniel and gave him many generous gifts. He made him ruler over the entire province of Babylon and chief
administrator over all the
wise men of Babylon.
Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known unto me the interpretation of the dream.
So I issued a decree that all the
wise men of Babylon be brought before me to
interpret the dream for me.
This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to
whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.
This decision is the decree of the watchers, the
verdict declared by the holy ones, so that the living will know that the Most High rules over the kingdom of mankind and gives it to whom He
wishes, setting over it the lowliest of men.’
This dream I king
Nebuchadnezzar have seen. Now thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation thereof,
forasmuch as all the
wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation: but thou art able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee.
This is the dream that I, King
Nebuchadnezzar, saw. Now, Belteshazzar, tell me the interpretation, because none of the
wise men of my kingdom can
interpret it for me. But you are able, because the spirit of the holy gods is in you.”
That they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and they shall wet thee with the
dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over thee, till thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to
whomsoever he will.
You will be driven away from mankind, and your dwelling will be with the beasts of the field. You will feed on grass like an ox and be
drenched with the
dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass you by, until you acknowledge that the Most High rules over the kingdom of mankind and gives it to whom He
wishes.
And they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field: they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass over thee, until thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to
whomsoever he will.
You will be driven away from mankind to live with the beasts of the field, and you will feed on grass like an ox. And seven times will pass you by, until you acknowledge that the Most High rules over the kingdom of mankind and gives it to whom He wishes.”
The king
cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. And the king spake, and said to the
wise men of Babylon,
Whosoever shall read this writing, and
shew me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.
The king called out for the enchanters, astrologers, and diviners to be brought in, and he said to these
wise men of Babylon, “
Whoever reads this inscription and tells me its interpretation will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around his neck, and he will be made the third highest ruler in the kingdom.”
Then came in all the king’s wise men: but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof.
So all the king’s
wise men came in, but they could not read the inscription or
interpret it for him.
There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and
wisdom, like the
wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king
Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say, thy father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers;
There is a man in your kingdom who has the spirit of the holy gods in him. In the days of your father he was found to have insight, intelligence, and
wisdom like that of the gods. Your father, King
Nebuchadnezzar, appointed him chief of the magicians, enchanters, astrologers, and diviners. Your own father, the king,
I have even heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee.
I have heard that the spirit of the gods is in you, and that you have insight, intelligence, and extraordinary wisdom.
And now the
wise men, the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known unto me the interpretation thereof: but they could not
shew the interpretation of the thing:
Now the
wise men and enchanters were brought before me to read this inscription and
interpret it for me, but they could not give its interpretation.
And for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages,
trembled and feared before him: whom he would he
slew; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he put down.
Because of the greatness that He bestowed on him, the people of every nation and language
trembled in fear before him. He killed whom he
wished and kept alive whom he
wished; he
exalted whom he
wished and humbled whom he
wished.
And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild
asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the
dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it
whomsoever he will.
He was driven away from mankind, and his mind was like that of a beast. He lived with the wild
donkeys and
ate grass like an ox, and his body was
drenched with the
dew of heaven until he acknowledged that the Most High God rules over the kingdom of mankind, setting over it whom He
wishes.
And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to
purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed.
Some of the
wise will fall, so that they may be refined,
purified, and made spotless until the time of the end, for it will still come at the appointed time.
And they that be
wise shall
shine as the brightness of the
firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.
Then the
wise will
shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness will
shine like the stars
forever and ever.
Many shall be
purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the
wise shall understand.
Many will be
purified, made spotless, and refined, but the wicked will continue to act wickedly. None of the wicked will understand, but the
wise will understand.
Who is
wise, and he shall understand these things?
prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein.
Shall I not in that day, saith the LORD, even destroy the
wise men out of
Edom, and understanding out of the mount of
Esau?
In that day, declares the LORD, will I not destroy the
wise men of
Edom and the men of understanding in the mountains of
Esau?
And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a
vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of
Jonah, that he
fainted, and
wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.
As the sun was rising, God appointed a
scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on
Jonah’s head so that he grew
faint and
wished to die, saying, “It is better for me to die than to live.”
The LORD’S voice crieth unto the city, and the man of wisdom shall see thy name: hear ye the rod, and who hath appointed it.
The voice of the LORD calls out to the city (and it is sound
wisdom to fear Your name): “
Heed the rod and the One who ordained it.
And
Hamath also shall border thereby; Tyrus, and Zidon, though it be very
wise.
and also against
Hamath, which borders it, as well as Tyre and
Sidon, though they are very
shrewd.
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this
wise: When as his mother Mary was
espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was
pledged in marriage to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.
Now when Jesus was born in
Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came
wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
After Jesus was born in
Bethlehem in
Judea, during the time of King Herod,
Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem,
Then Herod, when he had
privily called the
wise men, enquired of them
diligently what time the star appeared.
Then Herod called the
Magi secretly and learned from them the exact time the star had appeared.
Then Herod, when he saw that he was
mocked of the
wise men, was exceeding
wroth, and sent forth, and
slew all the children that were in
Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had
diligently enquired of the
wise men.
When Herod saw that he had been outwitted by the
Magi, he was filled with
rage. Sending orders, he put to death all the boys in
Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, according to the time he had learned from the
Magi.
For
verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one
jot or one
tittle shall in no
wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
For I tell you truly, until heaven and earth pass away, not a single
jot, not a stroke of a pen, will disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.
