Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth: and the
recompense of a man’s hands shall be rendered unto him.
By fruitful speech a man is filled with good things, and the work of his hands returns to him.
Wealth
gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.
Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.
Commit your works to the LORD and your plans will be achieved.
A just weight and balance are the LORD’S: all the weights of the
bag are his
work.
Honest scales and balances are from the LORD; all the weights in the
bag are His
concern.
He that laboureth laboureth for himself; for his mouth craveth it of him.
A
worker’s
appetite works for him because his hunger drives him
onward.
He also that is
slothful in his
work is brother to him that is a great waster.
Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.
Even a young man is known by his actions— whether his conduct is pure and upright.
The way of man is
froward and strange: but as for the pure, his
work is right.
The way of a guilty man is
crooked, but the conduct of the innocent is upright.
It is joy to the just to do judgment: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.
Justice executed is a joy to the righteous, but a terror to the workers of iniquity.
The desire of the
slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour.
The
craving of the slacker kills him because his hands refuse to
work.
Seest thou a man
diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.
Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will be stationed in the presence of kings; he will not stand before obscure men.
If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not;
doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul,
doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his
works?
If you say, “Behold, we did not know about this,” does not He who weighs hearts consider it? Does not the One who guards your life know? Will He not repay a man according to his deeds?
Prepare thy
work without, and make it fit for
thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house.
Complete your outdoor work and prepare your field; after that, you may build your house.
Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me: I will render to the man according to his work.
Do not say, “I will do to him as he has done to me; I will repay the man according to his work.”
A lying tongue hates those it crushes, and a
flattering mouth causes ruin.
He that tilleth his land shall have
plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain persons shall have poverty enough.
The one who
works his land will have
plenty of food, but
whoever chases
fantasies will have his fill of poverty.
She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.
She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands.
Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.
Give her the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her at the gates.
I have seen all the
works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and
vexation of spirit.
I have seen all the things that are done under the sun, and have found them all to be
futile, a pursuit of the wind.
I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards:
I expanded my pursuits. I built houses and planted vineyards for myself.
And
whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I
withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart
rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour.
Anything my eyes desired, I did not deny myself. I refused my heart no pleasure. For my heart took delight in all my work, and this was the reward for all my labor.
Then I looked on all the
works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and
vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.
Yet when I considered all the
works that my hands had accomplished and what I had
toiled to
achieve, I found everything to be
futile, a pursuit of the wind; there was nothing to be gained under the sun.
Therefore I
hated life; because the
work that is wrought under the sun is
grievous unto me: for all is vanity and
vexation of spirit.
So I
hated life, because the
work that is done under the sun was
grievous to me. For everything is
futile and a pursuit of the wind.
And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a
fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.
And who knows whether that man will be wise or
foolish? Yet he will take over all the labor at which I have
worked skillfully under the sun. This too is
futile.
For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in
equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.
When there is a man who has labored with wisdom, knowledge, and skill, and he must give his portion to a man who has not
worked for it, this too is
futile and a great evil.
There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.
Nothing is better for a man than to eat and drink and enjoy his work. I have also seen that this is from the hand of God.
What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth?
What does the
worker gain from his
toil?
He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.
He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set
eternity in the hearts of men, yet they cannot
fathom the
work that God has done from beginning to end.
I said in mine heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.
I said in my heart, “God will judge the righteous and the wicked, since there is a time for every activity and every deed.”
Wherefore I perceive that there is nothing better, than that a man should
rejoice in his own
works; for that is his portion: for who shall bring him to see what shall be after him?
I have seen that there is nothing better for a man than to enjoy his work, because that is his lot. For who can bring him to see what will come after him?
Yea, better is he than both they, which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil
work that is done under the sun.
But better than both is he who has not yet existed, who has not seen the evil that is done under the sun.
Again, I considered all
travail, and every right
work, that for this a man is
envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and
vexation of spirit.
I saw that all labor and success spring from a man’s
envy of his
neighbor. This too is
futile and a pursuit of the wind.
Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be
angry at thy voice, and destroy the
work of thine hands?
Do not let your mouth cause your flesh to sin, and do not tell the
messenger that your
vow was a mistake. Why should God be
angry with your words and destroy the
work of your hands?
The sleep of a labouring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much: but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep.
The sleep of the worker is sweet, whether he eats little or much, but the abundance of the rich man permits him no sleep.
Consider the
work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made
crooked?
Consider the
work of God: Who can
straighten what He has bent?
All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every
work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own
hurt.
All this I have seen, applying my mind to every deed that is done under the sun; there is a time when one man lords it over another to his own
detriment.
Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.
When the sentence for a crime is not speedily executed, the hearts of men become fully set on doing evil.
There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.
There is a
futility that is done on the earth: There are righteous men who get what the actions of the wicked deserve, and there are wicked men who get what the actions of the righteous deserve. I say that this too is
futile.
Then I
beheld all the
work of God, that a man cannot find out the
work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it;
yea further; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.
I saw every
work of God, and that a man is unable to
comprehend the
work that is done under the sun.
Despite his efforts to search it out, he cannot find its meaning; even if the wise man claims to know, he is unable to
comprehend.
For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them.
So I took all this to heart and concluded that the righteous and the wise, as well as their deeds, are in God’s hands. Man does not know what lies
ahead, whether love or
hate.
Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a
merry heart; for God now accepteth thy
works.
Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a
cheerful heart, for God has already approved your
works:
Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no
work, nor
device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave,
whither thou goest.
Whatever you find to do with your hands, do it with all your might, for in
Sheol, where you are going, there is no
work or
planning or knowledge or wisdom.
As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the
womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the
works of God who maketh all.
As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the bones are formed in a mother’s
womb, so you cannot understand the
work of God, the Maker of all things.
For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
For God will bring every deed into judgment, along with every hidden thing, whether good or evil.
How beautiful are thy feet with
shoes, O prince’s daughter! the joints of thy thighs are like jewels, the
work of the hands of a
cunning workman.
How beautiful are your
sandaled feet, O daughter of the prince! The curves of your thighs are like jewels, the
handiwork of a master.
And the strong shall be as
tow, and the maker of it as a
spark, and they shall both burn together, and none shall
quench them.
The strong man will become
tinder and his
work will be a
spark; both will burn together, with no one to
quench the flames.
Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made:
Their land is full of idols; they bow down to the work of their hands, to what their fingers have made.
And the
harp, and the
viol, the
tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts: but they regard not the
work of the LORD, neither consider the operation of his hands.
At their feasts are the
lyre and
harp, tambourines and flutes and wine. They disregard the actions of the LORD and fail to see the
work of His hands.
That say, Let him make speed, and
hasten his
work, that we may see it: and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw
nigh and come, that we may know it!
to those who say, “Let Him
hurry and
hasten His
work so that we may see it! Let the plan of the Holy One of Israel come so that we may know it!”
Wherefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord hath performed his whole
work upon mount
Zion and on Jerusalem, I will
punish the fruit of the
stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.
So when the Lord has completed all His
work against Mount
Zion and Jerusalem, He will say, “I will
punish the king of Assyria for the fruit of his
arrogant heart and the proud look in his eyes.
And in that day shall ye say, Praise the LORD, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is
exalted.
and on that day you will say: “Give praise to the LORD;
proclaim His name! Make His
works known among the peoples; declare that His name is
exalted.
But now the LORD hath spoken, saying, Within three years, as the years of an
hireling, and the glory of Moab shall be
contemned, with all that great multitude; and the
remnant shall be very small and feeble.
And now the LORD says, “In three years, as a
hired worker counts the years, Moab’s
splendor will become an object of contempt, with all her many people. And those who are left will be few and feeble.”
And he shall not look to the altars, the work of his hands, neither shall respect that which his fingers have made, either the groves, or the images.
They will not look to the altars they have fashioned with their hands or to the Asherahs and incense altars they have made with their fingers.
Moreover they that
work in fine flax, and they that
weave networks, shall be confounded.
The workers in flax will be dismayed, and the weavers of fine linen will turn pale.
And they shall be broken in the purposes thereof, all that make sluices and ponds for fish.
The
workers in cloth will be
dejected, and all the
hired workers will be sick at heart.
The LORD hath mingled a
perverse spirit in the midst thereof: and they have caused Egypt to
err in every
work thereof, as a
drunken man staggereth in his
vomit.
The LORD has poured into her a spirit of confusion. Egypt has been led
astray in all she does, as a
drunkard staggers through his own
vomit.
Neither shall there be any
work for Egypt, which the head or tail, branch or
rush, may do.
There is nothing Egypt can do— head or tail, palm or reed.
Whom the LORD of hosts shall
bless, saying, Blessed be Egypt my people, and Assyria the
work of my hands, and Israel mine inheritance.
The LORD of Hosts will
bless them, saying, “Blessed be Egypt My people, Assyria My
handiwork, and Israel My inheritance.”
For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Within a year, according to the years of an
hireling, and all the glory of
Kedar shall fail:
For this is what the Lord says to me: “Within one year, as a
hired worker would count it, all the glory of
Kedar will be gone.
O LORD, thou art my God; I will
exalt thee, I will praise thy name; for thou hast done wonderful things; thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth.
O LORD, You are my God! I will
exalt You; I will praise Your name. For You have
worked wonders— plans formed long ago— in perfect faithfulness.
LORD, thou
wilt ordain peace for us: for thou also hast wrought all our
works in us.
O LORD, You will establish peace for us. For all that we have accomplished, You have done for us.
For the LORD shall rise up as in mount Perazim, he shall be
wroth as in the valley of
Gibeon, that he may do his
work, his strange
work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act.
For the LORD will rise up as at Mount Perazim. He will
rouse Himself as in the Valley of
Gibeon, to do His
work, His strange
work, and to perform His task, His
disturbing task.
This also cometh forth from the LORD of hosts, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working.
This also comes from the LORD of Hosts, who is wonderful in counsel and excellent in wisdom.
And I will camp against thee round about, and will lay siege against thee with a mount, and I will raise forts against thee.
I will camp in a circle around you; I will
besiege you with towers and set up siege
works against you.
Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous
work among this people, even a marvellous
work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their
prudent men shall be
hid.
Therefore I will again
confound these people with wonder upon wonder. The wisdom of the wise will
vanish, and the intelligence of the intelligent will be hidden.”
Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their
works are in the dark, and they say, Who
seeth us? and who knoweth us?
Woe to those who
dig deep to hide their plans from the LORD. In darkness they do their
works and say, “Who sees us, and who will know?”
Surely your turning of things
upside down shall be esteemed as the
potter’s clay: for shall the
work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?
You have turned things
upside down, as if the
potter were regarded as clay. Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, “He did not make me”? Can the pottery say of the
potter, “He has no understanding”?
But when he
seeth his children, the
work of mine hands, in the midst of him, they shall
sanctify my name, and
sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall fear the God of Israel.
For when he sees his children around him, the
work of My hands, they will honor My name, they will
sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and they will stand in
awe of the God of Israel.
Yet he also is wise, and will bring evil, and will not call back his words: but will arise against the house of the evildoers, and against the help of them that work iniquity.
Yet He too is wise and brings
disaster; He does not call back His words. He will rise up against the house of the wicked and against the allies of evildoers.
For the
vile person will speak
villany, and his heart will
work iniquity, to
practise hypocrisy, and to utter error against the LORD, to make empty the soul of the
hungry, and he will cause the drink of the
thirsty to fail.
And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
The
work of righteousness will be peace; the service of righteousness will be quiet confidence
forever.
And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.
They have cast their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods, but only wood and stone—the work of human hands.
Behold, the Lord GOD will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.
Behold, the Lord GOD comes with might, and His arm establishes His rule. His reward is with Him, and His
recompense accompanies Him.
To an
idol that a
craftsman casts and a metalworker overlays with gold and fits with silver chains?
Behold, ye are of nothing, and your
work of
nought: an
abomination is he that chooseth you.
Behold, you are nothing and your
work is of no value.
Anyone who chooses you is
detestable.
Behold, they are all vanity; their
works are nothing: their
molten images are wind and confusion.
See, they are all a
delusion; their
works amount to nothing; their images are as empty as the wind.
Yea, before the day was I am he; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand: I will
work, and who shall let it?
Even from
eternity I am He, and none can deliver out of My hand. When I act, who can reverse it?”
Behold, all his fellows shall be
ashamed: and the
workmen, they are of men: let them all be gathered together, let them stand up; yet they shall fear, and they shall be
ashamed together.
Behold, all his companions will be put to shame, for the
craftsmen themselves are only human. Let them all
assemble and take their stand; they will all be brought to terror and shame.
The smith with the
tongs both
worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and
worketh it with the strength of his arms:
yea, he is
hungry, and his strength faileth: he drinketh no water, and is
faint.
The
blacksmith takes a tool and labors over the coals; he fashions an
idol with hammers and forges it with his strong arms. Yet he grows
hungry and loses his strength; he fails to drink water and grows
faint.
Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! Let the
potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy
work, He hath no hands?
Woe to him who quarrels with his Maker— one clay pot among many. Does the clay ask the
potter, ‘What are you making?’ Does your
work say, ‘He has no hands’?
Thus saith the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me.
Thus says the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and its Maker: “How
dare you question Me about My sons, or
instruct Me in the
work of My hands?
Then I said, I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for
nought, and in vain: yet surely my judgment is with the LORD, and my
work with my God.
But I said, “I have labored in vain, I have spent My strength in
futility and vanity; yet My
vindication is with the LORD, and My reward is with My God.”
Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy.
Behold, I have created the
craftsman who fans the coals into flame and forges a weapon fit for its task; and I have created the destroyer to
wreak havoc.
I will declare thy righteousness, and thy works; for they shall not profit thee.
I will
expose your righteousness and your
works, and they will not profit you.
Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we
afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours.
“Why have we fasted, and You have not seen? Why have we humbled ourselves, and You have not noticed?” “Behold, on the day of your fast, you do as you please, and you
oppress all your
workers.
Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.
Their cobwebs cannot be made into clothing, and they cannot cover themselves with their works. Their deeds are sinful deeds, and acts of violence are in their hands.
Thy people also shall be all righteous: they shall
inherit the land for ever, the branch of my planting, the
work of my hands, that I may be
glorified.
Then all your people will be righteous; they will possess the land
forever; they are the branch of My planting, the
work of My hands, so that I may be
glorified.
For I the LORD love judgment, I
hate robbery for burnt offering; and I will direct their
work in truth, and I will make an
everlasting covenant with them.
Behold, the LORD hath proclaimed unto the end of the world, Say ye to the daughter of
Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold, his reward is with him, and his
work before him.
Behold, the LORD has proclaimed to the ends of the earth, “Say to Daughter
Zion: See, your
Savior comes! Look, His reward is with Him, and His
recompense goes before Him.”
When thou
didst terrible things which we looked not for, thou camest down, the mountains flowed down at thy presence.
When You did
awesome works that we did not expect, You came down, and the mountains
trembled at Your presence.
Thou meetest him that rejoiceth and
worketh righteousness, those that remember thee in thy ways: behold, thou art
wroth; for we have
sinned: in those is continuance, and we shall be saved.
You
welcome those who
gladly do right, who remember Your ways. Surely You were
angry, for we
sinned. How can we be saved if we remain in our sins?
But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our
potter; and we all are the
work of thy hand.
But now, O LORD, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You are the
potter; we are all the
work of Your hand.
Your
iniquities, and the
iniquities of your fathers together, saith the LORD, which have burned incense upon the mountains, and
blasphemed me upon the hills: therefore will I measure their former
work into their
bosom.
both for your
iniquities and for those of your fathers,” says the LORD. “Because they burned incense on the mountains and
scorned Me on the hills, I will measure into their laps full payment for their former deeds.”
They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and mine
elect shall long enjoy the
work of their hands.
No longer will they build houses for others to inhabit, nor plant for others to eat. For as is the lifetime of a tree, so will be the days of My people, and My chosen ones will fully enjoy the work of their hands.
For I know their works and their thoughts: it shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come, and see my glory.
“And I, knowing their deeds and thoughts, am coming to gather all nations and tongues, and they will come and see My glory.
And I will utter my judgments against them touching all their wickedness, who have
forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, and worshipped the
works of their own hands.
I will
pronounce My judgments against them for all their wickedness, because they have
forsaken Me to burn incense to other gods and to worship the
works of their own hands.
For shame hath
devoured the labour of our fathers from our youth; their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters.
From our youth, that shameful god has consumed what our fathers have worked for— their flocks and herds, their sons and daughters.
And now, because ye have done all these works, saith the LORD, and I spake unto you, rising up early and speaking, but ye heard not; and I called you, but ye answered not;
And now, because you have done all these things, declares the LORD, and because I have spoken to you again and again but you would not
listen, and I have called to you but you would not answer,
