For thus saith the Lord GOD; How much more when I send my four
sore judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword,
and the famine,
and the
noisome beast,
and the
pestilence, to cut off from it man
and beast?
For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘How much worse will it be when I send against Jerusalem My four
dire judgments—sword, famine, wild beasts,
and plague—in order to cut off from it both man
and beast?
Yet, behold, therein shall be left a
remnant that shall be brought forth, both sons
and daughters: behold, they shall come forth unto you,
and ye shall see their way
and their doings:
and ye shall be comforted concerning the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, even concerning all that I have brought upon it.
Yet, behold, some survivors will be left in it—sons
and daughters who will be brought out. They will come out to you,
and when you see their conduct
and actions, you will be comforted regarding the
disaster I have brought upon Jerusalem—all that I have brought upon it.
And they shall comfort you, when ye see their ways and their doings: and ye shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done in it, saith the Lord GOD.
They will bring you
consolation when you see their conduct
and actions,
and you will know that it was not without cause that I have done all these things within it,’ declares the Lord GOD.”
And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
Behold, it is cast into the fire for fuel; the fire devoureth both the ends of it, and the midst of it is burned. Is it meet for any work?
No, it is cast into the fire for fuel. The fire devours both ends,
and the middle is
charred. Can it be useful for anything?
Behold, when it was whole, it was meet for no work: how much less shall it be meet yet for any work, when the fire hath
devoured it,
and it is burned?
Even when it was whole, it could not be made useful. How much less can it ever be useful when the fire has consumed it
and charred it!
And I will set my face against them; they shall go out from one fire,
and another fire shall
devour them;
and ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I set my face against them.
And I will set My face against them. Though they may have escaped the fire, yet another fire will
consume them.
And when I set My face against them, you will know that I am the LORD.
And I will make the land
desolate, because they have committed a
trespass, saith the Lord GOD.
Thus I will make the land
desolate, because they have acted unfaithfully,’ declares the Lord GOD.”
And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD unto Jerusalem; Thy birth
and thy
nativity is of the land of
Canaan; thy father was an Amorite,
and thy mother an Hittite.
and tell her that this is what the Lord GOD says to Jerusalem: Your origin
and your birth were in the land of the
Canaanites. Your father was an Amorite
and your mother a Hittite.
On the day of your birth your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water for
cleansing. You were not
rubbed with salt or
wrapped in cloths.
And when I passed by thee,
and saw thee
polluted in thine own blood, I said unto thee when thou
wast in thy blood, Live;
yea, I said unto thee when thou
wast in thy blood, Live.
Then I passed by
and saw you
wallowing in your blood,
and as you lay there in your blood I said to you, ‘Live!’ There I said to you, ‘Live!’
I have caused thee to multiply as the
bud of the field,
and thou hast increased
and waxen great,
and thou art come to excellent ornaments: thy breasts are fashioned,
and thine hair is grown, whereas thou
wast naked
and bare.
I made you
thrive like a plant of the field. You grew up
and matured and became very beautiful. Your breasts were formed
and your hair grew, but you were naked
and bare.
Now when I passed by thee,
and looked upon thee, behold, thy time was the time of love;
and I spread my
skirt over thee,
and covered thy nakedness:
yea, I
sware unto thee,
and entered into a covenant with thee, saith the Lord GOD,
and thou becamest mine.
Then I passed by
and saw you,
and you were indeed old enough for love. So I spread My
cloak over you
and covered your nakedness. I
pledged Myself to you, entered into a covenant with you,
and you became Mine, declares the Lord GOD.
Then washed I thee with water;
yea, I throughly washed away thy blood from thee,
and I
anointed thee with oil.
Then I bathed you with water,
rinsed off your blood,
and anointed you with oil.
I clothed thee also with
broidered work,
and shod thee with badgers’ skin,
and I
girded thee about with fine linen,
and I covered thee with silk.
I clothed you in
embroidered cloth
and gave you
sandals of fine leather. I
wrapped you in fine linen
and covered you with silk.
I decked thee also with ornaments, and I put bracelets upon thy hands, and a chain on thy neck.
I adorned you with
jewelry,
and I put bracelets on your wrists
and a chain around your neck.
And I put a
jewel on thy
forehead,
and earrings in thine ears,
and a beautiful crown upon thine head.
I put a ring in your nose, earrings on your ears, and a beautiful crown upon your head.
Thus
wast thou decked with gold
and silver;
and thy
raiment was of fine linen,
and silk,
and broidered work; thou
didst eat fine flour,
and honey,
and oil:
and thou
wast exceeding beautiful,
and thou
didst prosper into a kingdom.
So you were adorned with gold
and silver,
and your clothing was made of fine linen, silk,
and embroidered cloth. You
ate fine flour, honey,
and oil. You became very beautiful
and rose to be queen.
And thy
renown went forth among the heathen for thy beauty: for it was perfect through my
comeliness, which I had put upon thee, saith the Lord GOD.
Your fame spread among the nations on account of your beauty, for it was perfect in the
splendor I bestowed on you, declares the Lord GOD.
But thou
didst trust in thine own beauty,
and playedst the
harlot because of thy
renown,
and pouredst out thy fornications on every one that passed by; his it was.
But because of your fame, you trusted in your beauty
and played the
harlot. You
lavished your favors on
everyone who passed by,
and your beauty was theirs for the asking.
And of thy garments thou
didst take,
and deckedst thy high places with
divers colours,
and playedst the
harlot thereupon: the like things shall not come, neither shall it be so.
You took some of your garments
and made colorful high places for
yourself,
and on them you
prostituted yourself. Such things should not have happened; never should they have occurred!
Thou hast also taken thy fair jewels of my gold
and of my silver, which I had given thee,
and madest to
thyself images of men,
and didst commit
whoredom with them,
You also took the fine
jewelry of gold
and silver I had given you,
and you made male idols with which to
prostitute yourself.
And tookest thy
broidered garments,
and coveredst them:
and thou hast set mine oil
and mine incense before them.
You took your
embroidered garments to cover them,
and you set My oil
and incense before them.
My meat also which I gave thee, fine flour,
and oil,
and honey,
wherewith I fed thee, thou hast even set it before them for a sweet savour:
and thus it was, saith the Lord GOD.
And you set before them as a pleasing
aroma the food I had given you—the fine flour, oil,
and honey that I had fed you. That is what happened, declares the Lord GOD.
Moreover thou hast taken thy sons
and thy daughters, whom thou hast borne unto me,
and these hast thou sacrificed unto them to be
devoured. Is this of thy whoredoms a small matter,
You even took the sons
and daughters you bore to Me
and sacrificed them as food to idols. Was your
prostitution not enough?
That thou hast slain my children, and delivered them to cause them to pass through the fire for them?
You slaughtered My children and delivered them up through the fire to idols.
And in all thine abominations
and thy whoredoms thou hast not remembered the days of thy youth, when thou
wast naked
and bare,
and wast polluted in thy blood.
And in all your abominations
and acts of
prostitution, you did not remember the days of your youth when you were naked
and bare,
wallowing in your own blood.
And it came to pass after all thy wickedness, (
woe,
woe unto thee! saith the Lord GOD;)
Woe!
Woe to you, declares the Lord GOD.
And in addition to all your other wickedness,
That thou hast also built unto thee an eminent place, and hast made thee an high place in every street.
Thou hast built thy high place at every head of the way,
and hast made thy beauty to be
abhorred,
and hast opened thy feet to every one that passed by,
and multiplied thy whoredoms.
At the head of every street you built your lofty shrines
and degraded your beauty. With increasing
promiscuity, you spread your legs to all who passed by.
Thou hast also committed
fornication with the Egyptians thy neighbours, great of flesh;
and hast increased thy whoredoms, to
provoke me to anger.
Behold, therefore I have stretched out my hand over thee,
and have diminished thine ordinary food,
and delivered thee unto the will of them that
hate thee, the daughters of the Philistines, which are
ashamed of thy
lewd way.
Therefore I stretched out My hand against you
and reduced your portion. I gave you over to the desire of those who
hate you, the daughters of the Philistines, who were
ashamed of your
lewd conduct.
Thou hast played the
whore also with the Assyrians, because thou
wast unsatiable;
yea, thou hast played the
harlot with them,
and yet couldest not be satisfied.
Then you
prostituted yourself with the Assyrians, because you were not yet satisfied. Even after that, you were still not satisfied.
So you extended your
promiscuity to
Chaldea, the land of merchants—but even with this you were not satisfied!
In that thou buildest thine eminent place in the head of every way,
and makest thine high place in every street;
and hast not been as an
harlot, in that thou scornest
hire;
But when you built your mounds at the head of every street
and made your lofty shrines in every public square, you were not even like a
prostitute, because you
scorned payment.
They give gifts to all whores: but thou givest thy gifts to all thy lovers,
and hirest them, that they may come unto thee on every side for thy
whoredom.
Men give gifts to all their prostitutes, but you gave gifts to all your lovers. You
bribed them to come to you from everywhere for your
illicit favors.
And the contrary is in thee from other women in thy whoredoms, whereas none followeth thee to commit whoredoms: and in that thou givest a reward, and no reward is given unto thee, therefore thou art contrary.
So your
prostitution is the opposite of that of other women: No one
solicited your favors,
and you paid a fee instead of receiving one; so you are the very opposite!
Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thy
filthiness was poured out,
and thy nakedness discovered through thy whoredoms with thy lovers,
and with all the idols of thy abominations,
and by the blood of thy children, which thou
didst give unto them;
This is what the Lord GOD says: Because you poured out your wealth
and exposed your nakedness in your
promiscuity with your lovers
and with all your
detestable idols,
and because of the blood of your children which you gave to them,
Behold, therefore I will gather all thy lovers, with whom thou hast taken pleasure,
and all them that thou hast loved, with all them that thou hast
hated; I will even gather them round about against thee,
and will discover thy nakedness unto them, that they may see all thy nakedness.
therefore I will surely gather all the lovers with whom you found pleasure, all those you loved
and all those you
hated. I will gather them against you from all around
and expose you before them,
and they will see you completely naked.
And I will judge thee, as women that break
wedlock and shed blood are judged;
and I will give thee blood in
fury and jealousy.
And I will sentence you to the punishment of women who commit
adultery and those who shed blood; so I will bring upon you the wrath of your
bloodshed and jealousy.
And I will also give thee into their hand, and they shall throw down thine eminent place, and shall break down thy high places: they shall strip thee also of thy clothes, and shall take thy fair jewels, and leave thee naked and bare.
Then I will deliver you into the hands of your lovers,
and they will level your mounds
and tear down your lofty shrines. They will strip off your clothes, take your fine
jewelry,
and leave you naked
and bare.
They shall also bring up a company against thee, and they shall stone thee with stones, and thrust thee through with their swords.
They will bring a
mob against you, who will stone you
and cut you to pieces with their swords.
And they shall burn thine houses with fire,
and execute judgments upon thee in the sight of many women:
and I will cause thee to cease from playing the
harlot,
and thou also shalt give no
hire any more.
Then they will burn down your houses
and execute judgment against you in the sight of many women. I will put an end to your
prostitution,
and you will never again pay your lovers.
So will I make my
fury toward thee to rest,
and my jealousy shall depart from thee,
and I will be quiet,
and will be no more
angry.
So I will lay to rest My wrath against you,
and My jealousy will turn away from you. Then I will be calm
and no longer
angry.
Because thou hast not remembered the days of thy youth, but hast
fretted me in all these things; behold, therefore I also will
recompense thy way upon thine head, saith the Lord GOD:
and thou shalt not commit this
lewdness above all thine abominations.
Because you did not remember the days of your youth, but
enraged Me with all these things, I will surely bring your deeds down upon your own head, declares the Lord GOD. Have you not committed this
lewdness on top of all your other abominations?
Thou art thy mother’s daughter, that lotheth her husband
and her children;
and thou art the sister of thy sisters, which
lothed their husbands
and their children: your mother was an Hittite,
and your father an Amorite.
You are the daughter of your mother, who
despised her husband
and children. You are the sister of your sisters, who
despised their husbands
and children. Your mother was a Hittite
and your father an Amorite.
And thine elder sister is Samaria, she
and her daughters that dwell at thy left hand:
and thy younger sister, that dwelleth at thy right hand, is
Sodom and her daughters.
Your older sister was Samaria, who lived with her daughters to your north;
and your younger sister was
Sodom, who lived with her daughters to your south.
Yet hast thou not walked after their ways, nor done after their abominations: but, as if that were a very little thing, thou
wast corrupted more than they in all thy ways.
And you not only walked in their ways
and practiced their abominations, but soon you were more
depraved than they were.
As I live, saith the Lord GOD,
Sodom thy sister hath not done, she nor her daughters, as thou hast done, thou
and thy daughters.
As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, your sister
Sodom and her daughters never did as you
and your daughters have done.
Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister
Sodom, pride,
fulness of bread,
and abundance of idleness was in her
and in her daughters, neither did she
strengthen the hand of the poor
and needy.
Now this was the iniquity of your sister
Sodom: She
and her daughters were
arrogant, overfed,
and complacent; they did not help the poor
and needy.
And they were
haughty,
and committed
abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.
Thus they were
haughty and committed abominations before Me. Therefore I removed them, as you have seen.
Neither hath Samaria committed half of thy sins; but thou hast multiplied thine abominations more than they, and hast justified thy sisters in all thine abominations which thou hast done.
Furthermore, Samaria did not commit half the sins you did. You have multiplied your abominations beyond theirs,
and all the abominations you have committed have made your sisters appear righteous.
Thou also, which hast judged thy sisters, bear thine own shame for thy sins that thou hast committed more
abominable than they: they are more righteous than thou:
yea, be thou confounded also,
and bear thy shame, in that thou hast justified thy sisters.
So now you must bear your disgrace, since you have brought
justification for your sisters. For they appear more righteous than you, because your sins were more
vile than theirs. So you too must bear your shame
and disgrace, since you have made your sisters appear righteous.
When I shall bring again their captivity, the captivity of
Sodom and her daughters,
and the captivity of Samaria
and her daughters, then will I bring again the captivity of thy
captives in the midst of them:
But I will restore
Sodom and her daughters from captivity, as well as Samaria
and her daughters.
And I will restore you along with them.
That thou mayest bear thine own shame, and mayest be confounded in all that thou hast done, in that thou art a comfort unto them.
So you will bear your disgrace
and be
ashamed of all you did to comfort them.
When thy sisters,
Sodom and her daughters, shall return to their former estate,
and Samaria
and her daughters shall return to their former estate, then thou
and thy daughters shall return to your former estate.
And your sisters,
Sodom with her daughters
and Samaria with her daughters, will return to their former state. You
and your daughters will also return to your former state.
Before thy wickedness was discovered, as at the time of thy reproach of the daughters of Syria,
and all that are round about her, the daughters of the Philistines, which
despise thee round about.
before your wickedness was uncovered? Even so, you are now
scorned by the daughters of
Edom and all those around her,
and by the daughters of the Philistines—all those around you who
despise you.
Thou hast borne thy
lewdness and thine abominations, saith the LORD.
You will bear the consequences of your
lewdness and your abominations, declares the LORD.
Nevertheless I will remember my covenant with thee in the days of thy youth,
and I will establish unto thee an
everlasting covenant.
But I will remember the covenant I made with you in the days of your youth,
and I will establish an
everlasting covenant with you.
Then thou shalt remember thy ways,
and be
ashamed, when thou shalt receive thy sisters, thine elder
and thy younger:
and I will give them unto thee for daughters, but not by thy covenant.
Then you will remember your ways
and be
ashamed when you receive your older
and younger sisters. I will give them to you as daughters, but not because of My covenant with you.
And I will establish my covenant with thee; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD:
So I will establish My covenant with you, and you will know that I am the LORD,
That thou mayest remember,
and be confounded,
and never open thy mouth any more because of thy shame, when I am
pacified toward thee for all that thou hast done, saith the Lord GOD.
so that when I make
atonement for all you have done, you will remember
and be
ashamed and never again open your mouth because of your disgrace, declares the Lord GOD.”
And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
Now the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
Son of man, put forth a
riddle,
and speak a parable unto the house of Israel;
“Son of man,
pose a
riddle; speak a parable to the house of Israel
And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; A great eagle with great wings, longwinged, full of feathers, which had
divers colours, came unto
Lebanon,
and took the highest branch of the
cedar:
and tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘A great eagle with great wings
and long pinions, full of feathers of many colors, came to
Lebanon and took away the top of the
cedar.
He
cropped off the top of his young twigs,
and carried it into a land of
traffick; he set it in a city of merchants.
He
plucked off its
topmost shoot, carried it to the land of merchants,
and planted it in a city of traders.
He took also of the seed of the land,
and planted it in a fruitful field; he placed it by great waters,
and set it as a
willow tree.
He took some of the seed of the land
and planted it in fertile soil; he placed it by abundant waters
and set it out like a
willow.
And it grew,
and became a spreading vine of low
stature, whose branches turned toward him,
and the roots thereof were under him: so it became a vine,
and brought forth branches,
and shot forth sprigs.
It
sprouted and became a spreading vine, low in height, with branches turned toward him; yet its roots remained where it stood. So it became a vine
and yielded branches
and sent out shoots.
There was also another great eagle with great wings
and many feathers:
and, behold, this vine did bend her roots toward him,
and shot forth her branches toward him, that he might water it by the furrows of her
plantation.
But there was another great eagle with great wings and many feathers. And behold, this vine bent its roots toward him. It stretched out its branches to him from its planting bed, so that he might water it.
It was planted in a good soil by great waters, that it might bring forth branches, and that it might bear fruit, that it might be a goodly vine.
It had been planted in good soil by abundant waters in order to yield branches and bear fruit and become a splendid vine.’
Say thou, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Shall it
prosper? shall he not pull up the roots thereof,
and cut off the fruit thereof, that it wither? it shall wither in all the leaves of her spring, even without great power or many people to
pluck it up by the roots thereof.
So you are to tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Will it
flourish? Will it not be uprooted
and stripped of its fruit so that it shrivels? All its foliage will wither! It will not take a strong arm or many people to pull it up by its roots.
Say now to the
rebellious house, Know ye not what these things mean? tell them, Behold, the king of Babylon is come to Jerusalem,
and hath taken the king thereof,
and the princes thereof,
and led them with him to Babylon;
“Now say to this
rebellious house: ‘Do you not know what these things mean?’ Tell them, ‘Behold, the king of Babylon came to Jerusalem, carried off its king
and officials,
and brought them back with him to Babylon.
And hath taken of the king’s seed, and made a covenant with him, and hath taken an oath of him: he hath also taken the mighty of the land:
He took a member of the royal family and made a covenant with him, putting him under oath. Then he carried away the leading men of the land,
But he rebelled against him in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses
and much people. Shall he
prosper? shall he escape that doeth such things? or shall he break the covenant,
and be delivered?
But this king rebelled against Babylon by sending his envoys to Egypt to ask for horses
and a large army. Will he
flourish? Will the one who does such things escape? Can he break a covenant
and yet escape?’
As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely in the place where the king dwelleth that made him king, whose oath he
despised,
and whose covenant he
brake, even with him in the midst of Babylon he shall die.
‘As surely as I live,’ declares the Lord GOD, ‘he will die in Babylon, in the land of the king who enthroned him, whose oath he
despised and whose covenant he broke.
Neither shall Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company make for him in the war, by casting up mounts, and building forts, to cut off many persons:
Pharaoh with his mighty army
and vast
horde will not help him in battle, when ramps are built
and siege walls constructed to destroy many lives.
Seeing he
despised the oath by breaking the covenant, when, lo, he had given his hand,
and hath done all these things, he shall not escape.
He
despised the oath by breaking the covenant. Seeing that he gave his hand in
pledge yet did all these things, he will not escape!’
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; As I live, surely mine oath that he hath
despised,
and my covenant that he hath broken, even it will I
recompense upon his own head.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘As surely as I live, I will bring down upon his head My oath that he
despised and My covenant that he broke.
And I will spread my net upon him,
and he shall be taken in my
snare,
and I will bring him to Babylon,
and will
plead with him there for his
trespass that he hath
trespassed against me.
I will spread My net over him
and catch him in My
snare. I will bring him to Babylon
and execute judgment upon him there for the treason he committed against Me.
And all his fugitives with all his bands shall fall by the sword, and they that remain shall be scattered toward all winds: and ye shall know that I the LORD have spoken it.
All his choice troops will fall by the sword,
and those who
survive will be scattered to every wind. Then you will know that I, the LORD, have spoken.’
Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will also take of the highest branch of the high
cedar,
and will set it; I will crop off from the top of his young twigs a tender one,
and will plant it upon an high mountain
and eminent:
This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘I will take a shoot from the lofty top of the
cedar,
and I will set it out. I will
pluck a tender
sprig from its
topmost shoots,
and I will plant it on a high
and lofty mountain.
In the mountain of the height of Israel will I plant it:
and it shall bring forth boughs,
and bear fruit,
and be a goodly
cedar:
and under it shall dwell all fowl of every wing; in the shadow of the branches thereof shall they dwell.
I will plant it on the mountain heights of Israel so that it will bear branches; it will yield fruit
and become a
majestic cedar. Birds of every kind will nest under it, taking shelter in the shade of its branches.
And all the trees of the field shall know that I the LORD have brought down the high tree, have
exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree,
and have made the dry tree to
flourish: I the LORD have brought down the high tree, have
exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree,
and have made the dry tree to
flourish: I the LORD have spoken
and have done it.
Then all the trees of the field will know that I am the LORD. I bring the tall tree down
and make the low tree tall. I dry up the green tree
and make the
withered tree
flourish. I, the LORD, have spoken,
and I have done it.’”
What mean ye, that ye use this
proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten
sour grapes,
and the children’s teeth are set on edge?
“What do you people mean by
quoting this
proverb about the land of Israel: ‘The fathers have eaten
sour grapes,
and the teeth of the children are set on edge’?
Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.
Behold, every soul belongs to Me; both father and son are Mine. The soul who sins is the one who will die.
But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right,
Now suppose a man is righteous and does what is just and right:
And hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath
defiled his neighbour’s wife, neither hath come near to a
menstruous woman,
He does not eat at the mountain or look to the idols of the house of Israel. He does not
defile his
neighbor’s wife or approach a woman during her period.
And hath not
oppressed any, but hath restored to the
debtor his
pledge, hath
spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the
hungry,
and hath covered the naked with a garment;
He does not
oppress another, but restores the
pledge to the
debtor. He does not commit
robbery, but gives his bread to the
hungry and covers the naked with clothing.
He that hath not given forth upon
usury, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man
and man,
He does not
engage in
usury or take excess interest, but he withholds his hand from iniquity
and executes true justice between men.
Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord GOD.
He follows My statutes and faithfully keeps My ordinances. That man is righteous; surely he will live, declares the Lord GOD.
If he
beget a son that is a
robber, a
shedder of blood,
and that doeth the like to any one of these things,
Now suppose that man has a violent son, who sheds blood or does any of these things,
And that doeth not any of those duties, but even hath eaten upon the mountains,
and defiled his neighbour’s wife,
though the father has done none of them: Indeed, the son eats at the mountain
and defiles his
neighbor’s wife.
He oppresses the poor
and needy; he commits
robbery and does not restore a
pledge. He lifts his eyes to idols; he commits abominations.
Hath given forth upon
usury,
and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.
He engages in
usury and takes excess interest. Will this son live? He will not! Since he has committed all these abominations, he will surely die; his blood will be on his own head.
Now, lo, if he
beget a son, that
seeth all his father’s sins which he hath done,
and considereth,
and doeth not such like,
Now suppose this son has a son who sees all the sins his father has committed, considers them, and does not do likewise:
He does not
oppress another, or retain a
pledge, or commit
robbery. He gives his bread to the
hungry and covers the naked with clothing.
That hath taken off his hand from the poor, that hath not received
usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.
He withholds his hand from
harming the poor
and takes no interest or
usury. He keeps My ordinances
and follows My statutes. Such a man will not die for his father’s iniquity. He will surely live.
As for his father, because he cruelly
oppressed,
spoiled his brother by violence,
and did that which is not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity.
As for his father, he will die for his own iniquity, because he practiced
extortion,
robbed his brother,
and did what was wrong among his people.
Yet say ye, Why?
doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful
and right,
and hath kept all my statutes,
and hath done them, he shall surely live.
Yet you may ask, ‘Why shouldn’t the son bear the iniquity of his father?’ Since the son has done what is just and right, carefully observing all My statutes, he will surely live.
The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.
The soul who sins is the one who will die. A son will not bear the iniquity of his father, and a father will not bear the iniquity of his son. The righteousness of the righteous man will fall upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked man will fall upon him.
