And as the people were in expectation,
and all men
mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;
The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John could be the Christ.
John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed
baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the
latchet of whose
shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall
baptize you with the Holy Ghost
and with fire:
John answered all of them: “I
baptize you with water, but One more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose
sandals I am not worthy to
untie. He will
baptize you with the Holy Spirit
and with fire.
Whose
fan is in his hand,
and he will throughly
purge his floor,
and will gather the wheat into his
garner; but the
chaff he will burn with fire
unquenchable.
And many other things in his
exhortation preached he unto the people.
With these and many other exhortations, John proclaimed the good news to the people.
But Herod the
tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip’s wife,
and for all the evils which Herod had done,
But when he
rebuked Herod the
tetrarch regarding his brother’s wife Herodias
and all the evils he had done,
Now when all the people were
baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being
baptized,
and praying, the heaven was opened,
When all the people were being
baptized, Jesus was
baptized too.
And as He was praying, heaven was opened,
And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a
dove upon him,
and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.
and the Holy Spirit descended on Him in a bodily form like a
dove.
And a voice came from heaven: “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”
And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,
Jesus Himself was about thirty years old when He began His ministry. He was regarded as the son of Joseph, the son of Heli,
And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
Being forty days
tempted of the devil.
And in those days he did eat nothing:
and when they were ended, he afterward
hungered.
where for forty days He was
tempted by the devil. He
ate nothing during those days,
and when they had ended, He was
hungry.
And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.
The devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”
And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’”
And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
Then the devil led Him up to a high place and showed Him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.
And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee,
and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me;
and to
whomsoever I will I give it.
“I will give You authority over all these kingdoms
and all their glory,” he said. “For it has been
relinquished to me,
and I can give it to
anyone I wish.
And Jesus answered
and said unto him, Get thee behind me,
Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God,
and him only shalt thou serve.
But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’”
And he brought him to Jerusalem,
and set him on a
pinnacle of the temple,
and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast
thyself down from hence:
Then the devil led Him to Jerusalem
and set Him on the
pinnacle of the temple. “If You are the Son of God,” he said, “throw
Yourself down from here.
And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou
dash thy foot against a stone.
and they will lift You up in their hands, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’”
And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not
tempt the Lord thy God.
But Jesus answered, “It also says, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
And when the devil had ended all the
temptation, he departed from him for a season.
And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into
Galilee:
and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.
Jesus returned to
Galilee in the power of the Spirit,
and the news about Him spread throughout the surrounding region.
And he taught in their synagogues, being
glorified of all.
And he came to
Nazareth, where he had been brought up:
and, as his custom was, he went into the
synagogue on the sabbath day,
and stood up for to read.
Then Jesus came to
Nazareth, where He had been brought up. As was His custom, He entered the
synagogue on the Sabbath.
And when He stood up to read,
And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
the
scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. Unrolling it, He found the place where it was written:
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath
anointed me to
preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to
heal the brokenhearted, to
preach deliverance to the
captives,
and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are
bruised,
“The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has
anointed Me to
preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to
proclaim liberty to the
captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to release the
oppressed,
And he closed the book,
and he gave it again to the minister,
and sat down.
And the eyes of all them that were in the
synagogue were fastened on him.
And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.
and He began by saying, “
Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
And all bare him witness,
and wondered at the
gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth.
And they said, Is not this Joseph’s son?
All spoke well of Him
and marveled at the
gracious words that came from His lips. “Isn’t this the son of Joseph?” they asked.
And he said,
Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.
Then He added, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown.
But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;
But I tell you truthfully that there were many widows in Israel in the time of
Elijah, when the sky was shut for three
and a half years
and great famine swept over all the land.
And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet;
and none of them was
cleansed, saving
Naaman the
Syrian.
And all they in the
synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,
And rose up,
and thrust him out of the city,
and led him unto the
brow of the hill
whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down
headlong.
They got up, drove Him out of the town,
and led Him to the
brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw Him over the
cliff.
But he passing through the midst of them went his way,
But Jesus passed through the crowd and went on His way.
And came down to
Capernaum, a city of
Galilee,
and taught them on the sabbath days.
Then He went down to
Capernaum, a town in
Galilee,
and on the Sabbath He began to teach the people.
And they were
astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.
They were
astonished at His teaching, because His message had authority.
And in the
synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil,
and cried out with a loud voice,
In the
synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean
demon. He
cried out in a loud voice,
And Jesus
rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace,
and come out of him.
And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him,
and hurt him not.
But Jesus
rebuked the
demon. “Be silent!” He said. “Come out of him!” At this, the
demon threw the man down before them all
and came out without
harming him.
And they were all
amazed,
and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority
and power he commandeth the unclean spirits,
and they come out.
All the people were overcome with
amazement and asked one another, “What is this message? With authority
and power He commands the unclean spirits,
and they come out!”
And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.
And the news about Jesus spread throughout the surrounding region.
And he arose out of the
synagogue,
and entered into Simon’s house.
And Simon’s wife’s mother was taken with a great fever;
and they
besought him for her.
After Jesus had left the
synagogue, He went to the home of Simon, whose mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever. So they appealed to Jesus on her behalf,
And he stood over her,
and rebuked the fever;
and it left her:
and immediately she arose
and ministered unto them.
and He stood over her
and rebuked the fever,
and it left her.
And she got up at once
and began to serve them.
Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with
divers diseases brought them unto him;
and he laid his hands on every one of them,
and healed them.
At
sunset, all who were ill with various diseases were brought to Jesus,
and laying His hands on each one, He
healed them.
And devils also came out of many, crying out,
and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God.
And he
rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.
Demons also came out of many people,
shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But He
rebuked the demons
and would not allow them to speak, because they knew He was the Christ.
And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.
At
daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place,
and the crowds were looking for Him. They came to Him
and tried to keep Him from leaving.
And he said unto them, I must
preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.
But Jesus told them, “I must
preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well, because that is why I was sent.”
And he preached in the synagogues of
Galilee.
And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,
On one occasion, while Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret with the crowd pressing in on Him to hear the word of God,
And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the
fishermen were gone out of them,
and were washing their nets.
He saw two boats at the edge of the lake. The
fishermen had left them
and were washing their nets.
And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.
Jesus got into the boat belonging to Simon and asked him to put out a little from shore. And sitting down, He taught the people from the boat.
Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon,
Launch out into the deep,
and let down your nets for a draught.
When Jesus had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and let down your nets for a catch.”
And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have
toiled all the night,
and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.
“Master,” Simon replied, “we have worked hard all night without catching anything. But because You say so, I will let down the nets.”
And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes:
and their net
brake.
When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to
tear.
And they
beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come
and help them.
And they came,
and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.
So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
For he was
astonished,
and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:
For he
and his companions were
astonished at the catch of fish they had taken,
And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.
and so were his partners James and John, the sons of Zebedee. “Do not be afraid,” Jesus said to Simon. “From now on you will catch men.”
And when they had brought their ships to land, they
forsook all,
and followed him.
And when they had brought their boats
ashore, they left everything
and followed Him.
And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of
leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face,
and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou
wilt, thou canst make me clean.
While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with
leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he fell facedown
and begged Him, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”
And he put forth his hand,
and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean.
And immediately the
leprosy departed from him.
Jesus reached out His hand
and touched the man. “I am willing,” He said. “Be clean!”
And immediately the
leprosy left him.
And he charged him to tell no man: but go,
and shew thyself to the priest,
and offer for thy
cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.
“Do not tell
anyone,” Jesus
instructed him. “But go, show
yourself to the priest
and present the offering Moses prescribed for your
cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him:
and great multitudes came together to hear,
and to be
healed by him of their
infirmities.
But the news about Jesus spread all the more,
and great crowds came to hear Him
and to be
healed of their sicknesses.
And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.
Yet He frequently withdrew to the wilderness to pray.
And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were
Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of
Galilee,
and Judaea,
and Jerusalem:
and the power of the Lord was present to
heal them.
One day Jesus was teaching,
and the
Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there. People had come from Jerusalem
and from every village of
Galilee and Judea,
and the power of the Lord was present for Him to
heal the sick.
And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a
palsy:
and they sought means to bring him in,
and to lay him before him.
Just then some men came carrying a
paralyzed man on a mat. They tried to bring him inside to set him before Jesus,
And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop,
and let him down through the
tiling with his
couch into the midst before Jesus.
but they could not find a way through the crowd. So they went up on the roof
and lowered him on his mat through the
tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are
forgiven thee.
When Jesus saw their faith, He said, “Friend, your sins are
forgiven.”
And the
scribes and the
Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can
forgive sins, but God alone?
Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be
forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up
and walk?
Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are
forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up
and walk?’
But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to
forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the
palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise,
and take up thy
couch,
and go into thine house.
But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on the earth to
forgive sins...” He said to the
paralytic, “I tell you, get up,
pick up your mat,
and go home.”
And immediately he rose up before them,
and took up that
whereon he lay,
and departed to his own house,
glorifying God.
And immediately the man stood up before them, took what he had been lying on,
and went home
glorifying God.
And they were all
amazed,
and they
glorified God,
and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day.
And after these things he went forth,
and saw a
publican, named Levi, sitting at the
receipt of custom:
and he said unto him, Follow me.
After this, Jesus went out
and saw a tax
collector named Levi sitting at the tax
booth. “Follow Me,” He told him,
And he left all, rose up, and followed him.
and Levi got up, left everything, and followed Him.
And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them.
Then Levi hosted a great
banquet for Jesus at his house. A large crowd of tax collectors was there, along with others who were eating with them.
But their
scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat
and drink with publicans
and sinners?
And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.
Jesus answered, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often,
and make prayers,
and likewise the disciples of the
Pharisees; but thine eat
and drink?
Then they said to Him, “John’s disciples
and those of the
Pharisees frequently fast
and pray, but Yours keep on eating
and drinking.”
Jesus replied, “Can you make the guests of the
bridegroom fast while He is with them?
But the days will come, when the
bridegroom shall be taken away from them,
and then shall they fast in those days.
But the time will come when the
bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.”
And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.
He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment
and sews it on an old one. If he does, he will
tear the new garment as well,
and the
patch from the new will not
match the old.
And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will
burst the bottles,
and be
spilled,
and the bottles shall perish.
And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will
burst the skins, the wine will
spill,
and the wineskins will be ruined.
But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.
Instead, new wine is poured into new wineskins.
No man also having
drunk old wine
straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.
And no one after drinking old wine wants new, for he says, ‘The old is better.’”
And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields;
and his disciples
plucked the ears of corn,
and did eat,
rubbing them in their hands.
One Sabbath Jesus was passing through the grainfields,
and His disciples began to
pick the heads of grain,
rub them in their hands,
and eat them.
And certain of the
Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days?
But some of the
Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”
And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an
hungred,
and they which were with him;
Jesus replied, “Have you not read what David did when he
and his companions were
hungry?
How he went into the house of God,
and did take
and eat the
shewbread,
and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone?
He entered the house of God, took the consecrated bread
and gave it to his companions,
and ate what is lawful only for the priests to eat.”
And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
Then Jesus declared, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the
synagogue and taught:
and there was a man whose right hand was
withered.
On another Sabbath Jesus entered the
synagogue and was teaching,
and a man was there whose right hand was
withered.
But he knew their thoughts,
and said to the man which had the
withered hand, Rise up,
and stand forth in the midst.
And he arose
and stood forth.
But Jesus knew their thoughts
and said to the man with the
withered hand, “Get up
and stand among us.” So he got up
and stood there.
And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.
And after looking around at all of them, He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and it was restored.
And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus.
And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
In those days Jesus went out to the mountain to pray, and He spent the night in prayer to God.
And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;
When
daylight came, He called His disciples to Him
and chose twelve of them, whom He also designated as apostles:
Simon, (whom he also named Peter,)
and Andrew his brother, James
and John, Philip
and Bartholomew,
Simon, whom He named Peter,
and his brother
Andrew; James
and John; Philip
and Bartholomew;
Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes,
Matthew
and Thomas; James son of Alphaeus
and Simon called the
Zealot;
And he came down with them,
and stood in the plain,
and the company of his disciples,
and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea
and Jerusalem,
and from the sea coast of Tyre
and Sidon, which came to hear him,
and to be
healed of their diseases;
Then Jesus came down with them
and stood on a level place. A large crowd of His disciples was there, along with a great number of people from all over
Judea, Jerusalem,
and the sea coast of Tyre
and Sidon.
And they that were
vexed with unclean spirits:
and they were
healed.
They had come to hear Him
and to be
healed of their diseases,
and those troubled by unclean spirits were
healed.
