And it is easier for heaven
and earth to pass, than one
tittle of the law to fail.
But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for a single stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.
There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple
and fine linen,
and fared
sumptuously every day:
Now there was a rich man dressed in purple
and fine linen, who lived each day in
joyous splendor.
And there was a certain
beggar named
Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,
And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came
and licked his sores.
and longing to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came
and licked his sores.
And it came to pass, that the
beggar died,
and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s
bosom: the rich man also died,
and was buried;
One day the
beggar died
and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side.
And the rich man also died
and was buried.
In Hades, where he was in
torment, he looked up
and saw Abraham from
afar, with
Lazarus by his side.
And he
cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me,
and send
Lazarus, that he may dip the
tip of his finger in water,
and cool my tongue; for I am
tormented in this flame.
So he
cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me
and send
Lazarus to dip the
tip of his finger in water
and cool my tongue. For I am in
agony in this fire.’
But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things,
and likewise
Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted,
and thou art
tormented.
But Abraham answered, ‘Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, while
Lazarus received bad things. But now he is comforted here, while you are in
agony.
And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
And besides all this, a great
chasm has been fixed between us
and you, so that even those who wish cannot cross from here to you, nor can
anyone cross from there to us.’
Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses
and the prophets; let your brothers
listen to them.’
And he said,
Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will
repent.
‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone is sent to them from the dead, they will
repent.’
And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
Then Abraham said to him, ‘If they do not
listen to Moses
and the prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’”
It were better for him that a
millstone were
hanged about his neck,
and he cast into the sea, than that he should
offend one of these little ones.
It would be better for him to have a
millstone hung around his neck
and to be thrown into the sea than to cause one of these little ones to
stumble.
And if he
trespass against thee seven times in a day,
and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I
repent; thou shalt
forgive him.
Even if he sins against you seven times in a day,
and seven times returns to say, ‘I
repent,’ you must
forgive him.”
And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.
The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!”
And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of
mustard seed, ye might say unto this
sycamine tree, Be thou
plucked up by the root,
and be thou planted in the sea;
and it should obey you.
And the Lord answered, “If you have faith the size of a
mustard seed, you can say to this
mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted
and planted in the sea,’
and it will obey you.
But which of you, having a servant
plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by
and by, when he is come from the field, Go
and sit down to meat?
Which of you whose servant comes in from
plowing or
shepherding in the field will say to him, ‘Come at once
and sit down to eat’?
And will not rather say unto him, Make ready
wherewith I may
sup,
and gird thyself,
and serve me, till I have eaten
and drunken;
and afterward thou shalt eat
and drink?
Instead, won’t he tell him, ‘Prepare my meal
and dress
yourself to serve me while I eat
and drink;
and afterward you may eat
and drink’?
And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria
and Galilee.
While Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem, He was passing between Samaria
and Galilee.
And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood
afar off:
As He entered one of the villages, He was met by ten lepers. They stood at a distance
And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.
and raised their voices,
shouting, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”
And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go
shew yourselves unto the priests.
And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were
cleansed.
When Jesus saw them, He said, “Go, show
yourselves to the priests.”
And as they were on their way, they were
cleansed.
And one of them, when he saw that he was
healed, turned back,
and with a loud voice
glorified God,
When one of them saw that he was
healed, he came back, praising God in a loud voice.
And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him
thanks:
and he was a
Samaritan.
And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten
cleansed? but where are the nine?
“Were not all ten
cleansed?” Jesus asked. “Where then are the other nine?
There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.
Was no one found except this foreigner to return and give glory to God?”
And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.
Then Jesus said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well!”
And when he was demanded of the
Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them
and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:
When asked by the
Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The kingdom of God will not come with observable signs.
And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not seeit.
Then He said to the disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it.
And they shall say to you, See here; or, see there: go not after them, nor follow them.
People will tell you, ‘Look, there He is!’ or ‘Look, here He is!’ Do not go out or
chase after them.
For as the
lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day.
For just as the
lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other, so will be the Son of Man in His day.
But first must he suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation.
But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.
And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.
Just as it was in the days of
Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man:
They did eat, they
drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
and the flood came,
and destroyed them all.
People were eating
and drinking, marrying
and being given in marriage, up to the day
Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came
and destroyed them all.
Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they
drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded;
It was the same in the days of Lot: People were eating
and drinking,
buying and selling, planting
and building.
But the same day that Lot went out of
Sodom it rained fire
and brimstone from heaven,
and destroyed them all.
But on the day Lot left
Sodom, fire
and sulfur rained down from heaven
and destroyed them all.
In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back.
On that day, let no one on the housetop come down to
retrieve his possessions. Likewise, let no one in the field return for anything he has left behind.
Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it;
and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.
Whoever tries to save his life will lose it, but
whoever loses his life will preserve it.
I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.
I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed: one will be taken and the other left.
Two women shall be
grinding together; the one shall be taken,
and the other left.
Two women will be
grinding grain together: one will be taken
and the other left.”
Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
And they answered
and said unto him, Where, Lord?
And he said unto them,
Wheresoever the body is, thither will the eagles be gathered together.
“Where, Lord?” they asked. Jesus answered, “Wherever there is a
carcass, there the vultures will gather.”
And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray,
and not to
faint;
Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray at all times and not lose heart:
And there was a widow in that city;
and she came unto him, saying,
Avenge me of mine
adversary.
And there was a widow in that town who kept appealing to him, ‘Give me justice against my
adversary.’
And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man;
For a while he refused, but later he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor respect men,
And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith.
And the Lord said, “
Listen to the words of the unjust judge.
And shall not God
avenge his own
elect, which cry day
and night unto him, though he bear long with them?
Will not God bring about justice for His
elect who cry out to Him day
and night? Will He continue to
defer their help?
And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous,
and despised others:
To some who trusted in their own righteousness and viewed others with contempt, He also told this parable:
Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a
Pharisee,
and the other a
publican.
“Two men went up to the temple to pray. One was a
Pharisee and the other a tax
collector.
The
Pharisee stood
and prayed thus with himself, God, I
thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this
publican.
The
Pharisee stood by himself
and prayed, ‘God, I
thank You that I am not like the other men—swindlers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax
collector.
I fast twice in the week, I give
tithes of all that I possess.
I fast twice a week
and pay
tithes of all that I acquire.’
But the tax
collector stood at a distance, unwilling even to lift up his eyes to heaven. Instead, he beat his breast
and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a
sinner!’
I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be
abased;
and he that humbleth himself shall be
exalted.
I tell you, this man, rather than the
Pharisee, went home justified. For
everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be
exalted.”
And they brought unto him also infants, that he would touch them: but when his disciples saw it, they
rebuked them.
Now people were even bringing their
babies to Jesus for Him to place His hands on them.
And when the disciples saw this, they
rebuked those who brought them.
But Jesus called them unto him,
and said, Suffer little children to come unto me,
and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.
But Jesus called the children to Him and said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them! For the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to
inherit eternal life?
Then a certain ruler asked Him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to
inherit eternal life?”
And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God.
“Why do you call Me good?” Jesus replied. “No one is good except God alone.
Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit
adultery, Do not kill, Do not
steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father
and thy mother.
You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit
adultery, do not murder, do not
steal, do not bear false witness, honor your father
and mother.’”
And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up.
“All these I have kept from my youth,” he said.
Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast,
and distribute unto the poor,
and thou shalt have
treasure in heaven:
and come, follow me.
On hearing this, Jesus told him, “You still lack one thing: Sell everything you own
and give to the poor,
and you will have
treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.”
And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.
But when the ruler heard this, he became very
sad, because he was extremely wealthy.
And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
Seeing the man’s
sadness, Jesus said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!
And they that heard it said, Who then can be saved?
Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?”
And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.
But Jesus said, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”
Then Peter said, Lo, we have left all, and followed thee.
“Look,” said Peter, “we have left all we had to follow You.”
And he said unto them,
Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God’s sake,
“Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God
Who shall not receive
manifold more in this present time,
and in the world to come life
everlasting.
will fail to receive many times more in this age—and in the age to come, eternal life.”
Then he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished.
Then Jesus took the Twelve aside and said to them, “Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything the prophets have written about the Son of Man will be fulfilled.
And they shall
scourge him,
and put him to death:
and the third day he shall rise again.
They will
flog Him
and kill Him,
and on the third day He will rise again.”
And they understood none of these things:
and this saying was
hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken.
But the disciples did not understand any of these things. The meaning was hidden from them,
and they did not
comprehend what He was saying.
And it came to pass, that as he was come
nigh unto
Jericho, a certain blind man sat by the way side
begging:
As Jesus drew near to
Jericho, a blind man was sitting beside the road,
begging.
And hearing the multitude pass by, he asked what it meant.
When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening.
And they told him, that Jesus of
Nazareth passeth by.
“Jesus of
Nazareth is passing by,” they told him.
And he
cried, saying, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me.
So he called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
And they which went before
rebuked him, that he should hold his peace: but he
cried so much the more, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.
Those who led the way
admonished him to be silent, but he
cried out all the louder, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
And Jesus stood, and commanded him to be brought unto him: and when he was come near, he asked him,
Jesus stopped and directed that the man be brought to Him. When he had been brought near, Jesus asked him,
Saying, What
wilt thou that I shall do unto thee?
And he said, Lord, that I may receive my sight.
“What do you want Me to do for you?” “Lord,” he said, “let me see again.”
And Jesus said unto him, Receive thy sight: thy faith hath saved thee.
“Receive your sight!” Jesus replied. “Your faith has
healed you.”
And immediately he received his sight,
and followed him,
glorifying God:
and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise unto God.
Immediately he received his sight
and followed Jesus,
glorifying God.
And all the people who saw this gave praise to God.
And Jesus entered
and passed through
Jericho.
Then Jesus entered
Jericho and was passing through.
And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.
And there was a man named Zacchaeus, a chief tax
collector, who was very wealthy.
And he sought to see Jesus who he was;
and could not for the press, because he was little of
stature.
He was trying to see who Jesus was, but could not see over the crowd because he was small in
stature.
And he ran before,
and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.
And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up,
and saw him,
and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make
haste,
and come down; for to day I must
abide at thy house.
When Jesus came to that place, He looked up
and said, “Zacchaeus,
hurry down, for I must stay at your house
today.”
And when they saw it, they all
murmured, saying, That he was gone to be
guest with a man that is a
sinner.
And all who saw this began to
grumble, saying, “He has gone to be the
guest of a sinful man!”
And Zacchaeus stood,
and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor;
and if I have taken any thing from any man by false
accusation, I restore him
fourfold.
But Zacchaeus stood up
and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, half of my possessions I give to the poor,
and if I have
cheated anyone, I will repay it
fourfold.”
And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.
Jesus said to him, “
Today salvation has come to this house, because this man too is a son of Abraham.
For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
And as they heard these things, he added
and spake a parable, because he was
nigh to Jerusalem,
and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.
While the people were
listening to this, Jesus proceeded to tell them a parable, because He was near Jerusalem
and they thought the kingdom of God would appear
imminently.
He said therefore, A certain
nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom,
and to return.
So He said, “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to lay claim to his
kingship and then return.
And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.
Beforehand, he called ten of his servants
and gave them ten
minas. ‘Conduct business with this until I return,’ he said.
But his citizens
hated him,
and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.
But his subjects
hated him
and sent a
delegation after him to say, ‘We do not want this man to rule over us.’
And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.
When he returned from
procuring his
kingship, he summoned the servants to whom he had given the money, to find out what each one had
earned.
Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds.
The first servant came forward
and said, ‘Master, your
mina has produced ten more
minas.’
And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.
His master replied, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very small matter, you shall have authority over ten cities.’
And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds.
The second servant came
and said, ‘Master, your
mina has made five
minas.’
