And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities.
And to this one he said, ‘You shall have authority over five cities.’
And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a
napkin:
Then another servant came
and said, ‘Master, here is your
mina, which I have laid away in a piece of cloth.
For I feared thee, because thou art an
austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down,
and reapest that thou
didst not
sow.
For I was afraid of you, because you are a harsh man. You withdraw what you did not deposit
and reap what you did not
sow.’
And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an
austere man, taking up that I laid not down,
and reaping that I did not
sow:
His master replied, ‘You wicked servant, I will judge you by your own words. So you knew that I am a harsh man, withdrawing what I did not deposit
and reaping what I did not
sow?
Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with
usury?
Why then did you not deposit my money in the bank, and upon my return I could have collected it with interest?’
And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.
Then he told those standing by, ‘Take the
mina from him
and give it to the one who has ten
minas.’
(And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds.)
‘Master,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’
For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him.
He replied, ‘I tell you that
everyone who has will be given more; but the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.
But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring
hither,
and slay them before me.
And these enemies of mine who were unwilling for me to rule over them, bring them here
and slay them in front of me.’”
And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem.
After Jesus had said this, He went on
ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
And it came to pass, when he was come
nigh to
Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,
As He approached
Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, He sent out two of His disciples,
Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a
colt tied,
whereon yet never man sat: loose him,
and bring him
hither.
saying, “Go into the village
ahead of you,
and as you enter it, you will find a
colt tied there, on which no one has ever sat.
Untie it
and bring it here.
And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him.
If
anyone asks, ‘Why are you untying it?’ tell him, ‘The Lord needs it.’”
And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them.
So those who were sent went out and found it just as Jesus had told them.
And as they were loosing the
colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the
colt?
As they were untying the
colt, its owners asked, “Why are you untying the
colt?”
And they said, The Lord hath need of him.
“The Lord needs it,” they answered.
And they brought him to Jesus:
and they cast their garments upon the
colt,
and they set Jesus
thereon.
Then they led the
colt to Jesus, threw their cloaks over it,
and put Jesus on it.
And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way.
As He
rode along, the people spread their cloaks on the road.
And when he was come
nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to
rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;
And as He approached the descent from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of disciples began to praise God
joyfully in a loud voice for all the miracles they had seen:
Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.
“Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
And some of the
Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master,
rebuke thy disciples.
But some of the
Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher,
rebuke Your disciples!”
And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.
“I tell you,” He answered, “if they remain silent, the very stones will cry out.”
And when he was come near, he
beheld the city,
and wept over it,
As Jesus approached Jerusalem
and saw the city, He
wept over it
Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are
hid from thine eyes.
and said, “If only you had known on this day what would bring you peace! But now it is hidden from your eyes.
For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a
trench about thee,
and compass thee round,
and keep thee in on every side,
For the days will come upon you when your enemies will
barricade you
and surround you
and hem you in on every side.
And shall lay thee even with the ground,
and thy children within thee;
and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy
visitation.
They will level you to the ground—you
and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of your
visitation from God.”
And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought;
Then Jesus entered the temple courts and began to drive out those who were selling there.
And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests
and the
scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him,
Jesus was teaching at the temple every day, but the chief priests,
scribes,
and leaders of the people were intent on killing Him.
And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very
attentive to hear him.
Yet they could not find a way to do so, because all the people hung on His words.
And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple,
and preached the gospel, the chief priests
and the
scribes came upon him with the elders,
One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts
and proclaiming the gospel, the chief priests
and scribes, together with the elders, came up to Him.
And spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority?
“Tell us,” they said, “by what authority are You doing these things, and who gave You this authority?”
And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me:
“I will also ask you a question,” Jesus replied. “Tell Me:
And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not?
They
deliberated among themselves
and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will ask, ‘Why did you not believe him?’
But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet.
But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, for they are
convinced that John was a prophet.”
And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was.
So they answered that they did not know where it was from.
And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.
And Jesus replied, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”
Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a
vineyard,
and let it forth to
husbandmen,
and went into a far country for a long time.
Then He proceeded to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a
vineyard, rented it out to some tenants,
and went away for a long time.
And at the season he sent a servant to the
husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the
vineyard: but the
husbandmen beat him,
and sent him away empty.
At harvest time, he sent a servant to the tenants to collect his share of the fruit of the
vineyard. But the tenants beat the servant
and sent him away empty-handed.
And again he sent another servant:
and they beat him also,
and entreated him
shamefully,
and sent him away empty.
So he sent another servant, but they beat him
and treated him
shamefully, sending him away empty-handed.
And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out.
Then he sent a third, but they wounded him and threw him out.
But when the
husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.
But when the tenants saw the son, they discussed it among themselves and said, ‘This is the heir. Let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’
So they cast him out of the
vineyard,
and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the
vineyard do unto them?
So they threw him out of the
vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the
vineyard do to them?
He shall come
and destroy these
husbandmen,
and shall give the
vineyard to others.
And when they heard it, they said, God
forbid.
He will come
and kill those tenants,
and will give the
vineyard to others.”
And when the people heard this, they said, “May such a thing never happen!”
And he
beheld them,
and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?
But Jesus looked directly at them and said, “Then what is the meaning of that which is written: ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone’?
And the chief priests
and the
scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him;
and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them.
When the
scribes and chief priests realized that Jesus had spoken this parable against them, they sought to arrest Him that very hour. But they were afraid of the people.
And they watched him,
and sent forth
spies, which should
feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power
and authority of the governor.
So they watched Him closely
and sent
spies who pretended to be
sincere. They were hoping to catch Him in His words in order to hand Him over to the rule
and authority of the governor.
And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly:
“Teacher,” they inquired, “we know that You speak
and teach correctly. You show no
partiality, but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.
But Jesus saw through their
duplicity and said to them,
“Show Me a
denarius. Whose image
and inscription are on it?” “Caesar’s,” they answered.
And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar’s, and unto God the things which be God’s.
So Jesus told them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”
And they could not take hold of his words before the people:
and they
marvelled at his answer,
and held their peace.
And they were unable to
trap Him in His words before the people;
and amazed at His answer, they fell silent.
Then came to him certain of the
Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection;
and they asked him,
Then some of the
Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to question Him.
Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man’s brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
“Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man is to marry his brother’s widow and raise up offspring for him.
There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children.
Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a wife, but died childless.
And the second took her to wife, and he died childless.
Then the second
And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died.
and the third married the widow, and in the same way all seven died, leaving no children.
Last of all the woman died also.
And last of all, the woman died.
And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:
Jesus answered, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage.
But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:
But those who are considered worthy to share in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage.
Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.
In fact, they can no longer die, because they are like the angels. And since they are sons of the resurrection, they are sons of God.
Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the
bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham,
and the God of Isaac,
and the God of Jacob.
Even Moses demonstrates that the dead are raised, in the passage about the burning
bush. For he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac,
and the God of Jacob.’
And after that they
durst not ask him any question at all.
And they did not
dare to question Him any further.
And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David’s son?
Then Jesus declared, “How can it be said that the Christ is the Son of David?
And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
For David himself says in the book of Psalms: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand
Beware of the
scribes, which desire to walk in long robes,
and love greetings in the markets,
and the highest seats in the synagogues,
and the chief rooms at feasts;
“
Beware of the
scribes. They like to walk around in long robes,
and they love the greetings in the marketplaces, the chief seats in the synagogues,
and the places of honor at banquets.
Which
devour widows’ houses,
and for a
shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater
damnation.
And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury.
Then Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury,
And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites.
and He saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins.
And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all:
“Truly I tell you,” He said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others.
And as some spake of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly stones and gifts, he said,
As some of the disciples were remarking how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and consecrated gifts, Jesus said,
And they asked him, saying, Master, but when shall these things be? and what sign will there be when these things shall come to pass?
“Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?”
And he said, Take
heed that ye be not
deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ;
and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them.
Jesus answered, “See to it that you are not
deceived. For many will come in My name, claiming, ‘I am He,’
and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them.
But when ye shall hear of wars
and commotions, be not
terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by
and by.
When you hear of wars
and rebellions, do not be
alarmed. These things must happen first, but the end is not
imminent.”
Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom:
Then He told them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
And great earthquakes shall be in
divers places,
and famines,
and pestilences;
and fearful sights
and great signs shall there be from heaven.
There will be great earthquakes, famines, and pestilences in various places, along with fearful sights and great signs from heaven.
But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you,
and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues,
and into prisons, being brought before kings
and rulers for my name’s sake.
But before all this, they will seize you
and persecute you. On account of My name they will deliver you to the synagogues
and prisons,
and they will bring you before kings
and governors.
And it shall turn to you for a testimony.
This will be your opportunity to serve as witnesses.
For I will give you a mouth
and wisdom, which all your
adversaries shall not be able to
gainsay nor resist.
For I will give you speech
and wisdom that none of your
adversaries will be able to resist or
contradict.
And ye shall be
betrayed both by parents,
and brethren,
and kinsfolks,
and friends;
and some of you shall they cause to be put to death.
You will be
betrayed even by parents
and brothers
and relatives
and friends,
and some of you will be put to death.
And ye shall be
hated of all men for my name’s sake.
And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the
desolation thereof is
nigh.
But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, you will know that her
desolation is near.
Then let them which are in Judaea
flee to the mountains;
and let them which are in the midst of it depart out;
and let not them that are in the countries enter
thereinto.
Then let those who are in
Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out,
and let those in the country stay out of the city.
But
woe unto them that are with child,
and to them that give
suck, in those days! for there shall be great distress in the land,
and wrath upon this people.
How
miserable those days will be for
pregnant and nursing mothers! For there will be great distress upon the land
and wrath against this people.
And they shall fall by the edge of the sword,
and shall be led away
captive into all nations:
and Jerusalem shall be
trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.
They will fall by the edge of the sword
and be led
captive into all the nations.
And Jerusalem will be
trodden down by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
And there shall be signs in the sun,
and in the moon,
and in the stars;
and upon the earth distress of nations, with
perplexity; the sea
and the waves
roaring;
There will be signs in the sun
and moon
and stars,
and on the earth dismay among the nations,
bewildered by the
roaring of the sea
and the
surging of the waves.
Men’s hearts failing them for fear,
and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be
shaken.
Men will
faint from fear
and anxiety over what is coming upon the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be
shaken.
And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up,
and lift up your heads; for your
redemption draweth
nigh.
When these things begin to happen, stand up
and lift up your heads, because your
redemption is drawing near.”
And he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig tree, and all the trees;
Then Jesus told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees.
When they now shoot forth, ye see
and know of your own
selves that summer is now
nigh at hand.
When they
sprout leaves, you can see for
yourselves and know that summer is near.
Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.
Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.
Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.
So keep watch at all times, and pray that you may have the strength to escape all that is about to happen and to stand before the Son of Man.”
And in the day time he was teaching in the temple; and at night he went out, and abode in the mount that is called the mount of Olives.
Every day Jesus taught at the temple, but every evening He went out to
spend the night on the Mount of Olives.
And all the people came early in the morning to him in the temple, for to hear him.
And early in the morning all the people would come to hear Him at the temple.
And the chief priests
and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people.
and the chief priests
and scribes were looking for a way to put Jesus to death; for they feared the people.
And he went his way,
and communed with the chief priests
and captains, how he might
betray him unto them.
And Judas went to
discuss with the chief priests
and temple officers how he might
betray Jesus to them.
And they were
glad,
and covenanted to give him money.
They were delighted and agreed to give him money.
And he promised,
and sought opportunity to
betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude.
Judas consented,
and began to look for an opportunity to
betray Jesus to them in the absence of a crowd.
And he sent Peter
and John, saying, Go
and prepare us the
passover, that we may eat.
Jesus sent Peter
and John, saying, “Go
and prepare for us to eat the
Passover.”
