And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side,
and go in
and out from gate to gate throughout the camp,
and slay every man his brother,
and every man his companion,
and every man his neighbour.
He told them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Each of you men is to
fasten his sword to his side, go back
and forth through the camp from gate to gate,
and slay his brother, his friend,
and his
neighbor.’”
And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.
The Levites did as Moses commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people fell dead.
For Moses had said,
Consecrate yourselves to day to the LORD, even every man upon his son,
and upon his brother; that he may
bestow upon you a blessing this day.
Afterward, Moses said, “
Today you have been ordained for service to the LORD, since each man went against his son
and his brother; so the LORD has bestowed a blessing on you this day.”
And it came to pass on the
morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have
sinned a great sin:
and now I will go up unto the LORD;
peradventure I shall make an
atonement for your sin.
The next day Moses said to the people, “You have committed a great sin. Now I will go up to the LORD; perhaps I can make
atonement for your sin.”
And Moses returned unto the LORD,
and said, Oh, this people have
sinned a great sin,
and have made them gods of gold.
So Moses returned to the LORD and said, “Oh, what a great sin these people have committed! They have made gods of gold for themselves.
Yet now, if thou
wilt forgive their sin—;
and if not,
blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.
Yet now, if You would only
forgive their sin.... But if not, please
blot me out of the book that You have written.”
And the LORD said unto Moses,
Whosoever hath
sinned against me, him will I
blot out of my book.
The LORD replied to Moses, “
Whoever has
sinned against Me, I will
blot out of My book.
And the LORD plagued the people, because they made the
calf, which Aaron made.
And the LORD sent a plague on the people because of what they had done with the
calf that Aaron had made.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Depart,
and go up hence, thou
and the people which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, unto the land which I
sware unto Abraham, to Isaac,
and to Jacob, saying, Unto thy seed will I give it:
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Leave this place, you and the people you brought up out of the land of Egypt, and go to the land that I promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob when I said, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’
And I will send an angel before thee;
and I will drive out the
Canaanite, the Amorite,
and the Hittite,
and the Perizzite, the Hivite,
and the Jebusite:
Unto a land flowing with milk
and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art a stiffnecked people: lest I
consume thee in the way.
Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey. But I will not go with you, because you are a stiff-necked people; otherwise, I might destroy you on the way.”
And when the people heard these evil
tidings, they
mourned:
and no man did put on him his ornaments.
For the LORD had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people: I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment,
and consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee.
For the LORD had said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites, ‘You are a stiff-necked people. If I should go with you for a single moment, I would destroy you. Now take off your
jewelry,
and I will decide what to do with you.’”
And the children of Israel
stripped themselves of their ornaments by the mount
Horeb.
And Moses took the tabernacle,
and pitched it without the camp,
afar off from the camp,
and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation.
And it came to pass, that every one which sought the LORD went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp.
Now Moses used to take the tent
and pitch it at a distance outside the camp. He called it the Tent of Meeting,
and anyone inquiring of the LORD would go to the Tent of Meeting outside the camp.
And it came to pass, when Moses went out unto the tabernacle, that all the people rose up, and stood every man at his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he was gone into the tabernacle.
Then, whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people would stand at the entrances to their own tents and watch Moses until he entered the tent.
And it came to pass, as Moses entered into the tabernacle, the
cloudy pillar descended,
and stood at the door of the tabernacle,
and the LORD talked with Moses.
As Moses entered the tent, the
pillar of cloud would come down
and remain at the entrance,
and the LORD would speak with Moses.
And all the people saw the
cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle door:
and all the people rose up
and worshipped, every man in his tent door.
When all the people saw the
pillar of cloud standing at the entrance to the tent, they would stand up
and worship, each one at the entrance to his own tent.
And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend.
And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of
Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle.
Thus the LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young assistant Joshua son of
Nun would not leave the tent.
And Moses said unto the LORD, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people:
and thou hast not let me know whom thou
wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name,
and thou hast also found grace in my sight.
Then Moses said to the LORD, “Look, You have been telling me, ‘Lead this people up,’ but You have not let me know whom You will send with me. Yet You have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have found favor in My sight.’
Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight,
shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight:
and consider that this nation is thy people.
Now if indeed I have found favor in Your sight, please let me know Your ways, that I may know You and find favor in Your sight. Remember that this nation is Your people.”
And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.
And the LORD answered, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.
“If Your Presence does not go with us,” Moses replied, “do not lead us up from here.
For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.
For how then can it be known that Your people and I have found favor in Your sight, unless You go with us? How else will we be distinguished from all the other people on the face of the earth?”
And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.
So the LORD said to Moses, “I will do this very thing you have asked, for you have found favor in My sight, and I know you by name.”
Then Moses said, “Please show me Your glory.”
And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee,
and I will
proclaim the name of the LORD before thee;
and will be
gracious to whom I will be
gracious,
and will
shew mercy on whom I will
shew mercy.
“I will cause all My goodness to pass before you,” the LORD replied, “
and I will
proclaim My name—the LORD—in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I have mercy,
and I will have
compassion on whom I have
compassion.”
And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.
But He added, “You cannot see My face, for no one can see Me and live.”
And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:
The LORD continued, “There is a place near Me where you are to stand upon a rock,
And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a
clift of the rock,
and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:
and when My glory passes by, I will put you in a
cleft of the rock
and cover you with My hand until I have passed by.
And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.
Then I will take My hand away, and you will see My back; but My face must not be seen.”
And the LORD said unto Moses,
Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first:
and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which thou brakest.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “
Chisel out two stone tablets like the originals,
and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke.
And be ready in the morning,
and come up in the morning unto mount
Sinai,
and present
thyself there to me in the top of the mount.
Be ready in the morning,
and come up on Mount
Sinai to present
yourself before Me on the mountaintop.
And no man shall come up with thee, neither let any man be seen throughout all the mount; neither let the flocks nor herds feed before that mount.
No one may go up with you; in fact, no one may be seen
anywhere on the mountain—not even the flocks or herds may
graze in front of the mountain.”
And he
hewed two tables of stone like unto the first;
and Moses rose up early in the morning,
and went up unto mount
Sinai, as the LORD had commanded him,
and took in his hand the two tables of stone.
So Moses
chiseled out two stone tablets like the originals. He rose early in the morning,
and taking the two stone tablets in his hands, he went up Mount
Sinai as the LORD had commanded him.
And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD.
And the LORD descended in a cloud, stood with him there, and proclaimed His name, the LORD.
And the LORD passed by before him,
and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God,
merciful and gracious,
longsuffering,
and abundant in goodness
and truth,
Then the LORD passed in front of Moses
and called out: “The LORD, the LORD God, is
compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion
and faithfulness,
Keeping mercy for thousands,
forgiving iniquity
and transgression and sin,
and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children,
and upon the children’s children, unto the third
and to the fourth generation.
maintaining loving devotion to a thousand generations,
forgiving iniquity,
transgression,
and sin. Yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished; He will visit the iniquity of the fathers on their children
and grandchildren to the third
and fourth generations.”
And Moses made
haste,
and bowed his head toward the earth,
and worshipped.
Moses immediately bowed down to the ground and worshiped.
And he said, If now I have found grace in thy sight, O Lord, let my Lord, I pray thee, go among us; for it is a stiffnecked people;
and pardon our iniquity
and our sin,
and take us for thine inheritance.
“O Lord,” he said, “if I have indeed found favor in Your sight, my Lord, please go with us. Although this is a stiff-necked people,
forgive our iniquity
and sin,
and take us as Your inheritance.”
And he said, Behold, I make a covenant: before all thy people I will do marvels, such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation: and all the people among which thou art shall see the work of the LORD: for it is a terrible thing that I will do with thee.
And the LORD said, “Behold, I am making a covenant. Before all your people I will perform wonders that have never been done in any nation in all the world. All the people among whom you live will see the LORD’s work, for it is an
awesome thing that I am doing with you.
Observe thou that which I command thee this day: behold, I drive out before thee the Amorite,
and the
Canaanite,
and the Hittite,
and the Perizzite,
and the Hivite,
and the Jebusite.
But ye shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves:
Rather, you must
tear down their altars,
smash their sacred stones,
and chop down their Asherah poles.
Lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land,
and they go a
whoring after their gods,
and do sacrifice unto their gods,
and one call thee,
and thou eat of his sacrifice;
Do not make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, for when they
prostitute themselves to their gods
and sacrifice to them, they will
invite you,
and you will eat their sacrifices.
And thou take of their daughters unto thy sons,
and their daughters go a
whoring after their gods,
and make thy sons go a
whoring after their gods.
And when you take some of their daughters as brides for your sons, their daughters will
prostitute themselves to their gods
and cause your sons to do the same.
All that openeth the
matrix is mine;
and every
firstling among thy cattle, whether ox or sheep, that is male.
The first offspring of every
womb belongs to Me, including all the
firstborn males among your
livestock, whether cattle or sheep.
But the
firstling of an
ass thou shalt
redeem with a lamb:
and if thou
redeem him not, then shalt thou break his neck. All the
firstborn of thy sons thou shalt
redeem.
And none shall appear before me empty.
Six days thou shalt work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest: in earing time and in harvest thou shalt rest.
Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even in the seasons of
plowing and harvesting, you must rest.
And thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the feast of ingathering at the year’s end.
And you are to
celebrate the Feast of Weeks with the firstfruits of the wheat harvest,
and the Feast of Ingathering at the turn of the year.
For I will cast out the nations before thee,
and enlarge thy borders: neither shall any man desire thy land, when thou shalt go up to appear before the LORD thy God
thrice in the year.
For I will drive out the nations before you
and enlarge your borders,
and no one will
covet your land when you go up three times a year to appear before the LORD your God.
Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with
leaven; neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the
passover be left unto the morning.
Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to Me along with anything
leavened,
and do not let any of the sacrifice from the
Passover Feast remain until morning.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Write thou these words: for after the
tenor of these words I have made a covenant with thee
and with Israel.
The LORD also said to Moses, “Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.”
And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.
So Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments.
And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount
Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses’ hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses
wist not that the skin of his face
shone while he talked with him.
And when Moses came down from Mount
Sinai with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands, he was unaware that his face had become
radiant from speaking with the LORD.
And when Aaron
and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face
shone;
and they were afraid to come
nigh him.
Aaron
and all the Israelites looked at Moses,
and behold, his face was
radiant.
And they were afraid to approach him.
And Moses called unto them; and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation returned unto him: and Moses talked with them.
But Moses called out to them; so Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses spoke to them.
And afterward all the children of Israel came
nigh:
and he gave them in commandment all that the LORD had spoken with him in mount
Sinai.
And after this all the Israelites came near,
and Moses commanded them to do everything that the LORD had told him on Mount
Sinai.
And till Moses had done speaking with them, he put a
vail on his face.
When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a
veil over his face.
But when Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he took the
vail off, until he came out.
And he came out,
and spake unto the children of Israel that which he was commanded.
But whenever Moses went in before the LORD to speak with Him, he would remove the
veil until he came out.
And when he came out, he would tell the Israelites what he had been commanded,
And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face
shone:
and Moses put the
vail upon his face again, until he went in to speak with him.
and the Israelites would see that the face of Moses was
radiant. So Moses would put the
veil back over his face until he went in to speak with the LORD.
And Moses gathered all the congregation of the children of Israel together, and said unto them, These are the words which the LORD hath commanded, that ye should do them.
Then Moses assembled the whole congregation of Israel and said to them, “These are the things that the LORD has commanded you to do:
And Moses spake unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, This is the thing which the LORD commanded, saying,
Moses also told the whole congregation of Israel, “This is what the LORD has commanded:
Take ye from among you an offering unto the LORD:
whosoever is of a willing heart, let him bring it, an offering of the LORD; gold,
and silver,
and brass,
Take from among you an offering to the LORD. Let
everyone whose heart is willing bring an offering to the LORD: gold, silver,
and bronze;
And blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen, and goats’ hair,
blue, purple, and scarlet yarn; fine linen and goat hair;
And rams’ skins
dyed red,
and badgers’ skins,
and shittim wood,
And oil for the light,
and spices for
anointing oil,
and for the sweet incense,
and onyx stones
and gemstones to be mounted on the
ephod and breastpiece.
And every wise hearted among you shall come, and make all that the LORD hath commanded;
Let every skilled
craftsman among you come
and make everything that the LORD has commanded:
The tabernacle, his tent, and his covering, his taches, and his boards, his bars, his pillars, and his sockets,
the tabernacle with its tent and covering, its clasps and frames, its crossbars, posts, and bases;
The ark,
and the
staves thereof, with the mercy seat,
and the
vail of the covering,
the ark with its poles
and mercy seat,
and the
veil to shield it;
the table with its poles, all its utensils, and the Bread of the Presence;
The
candlestick also for the light,
and his furniture,
and his lamps, with the oil for the light,
the lampstand for light with its
accessories and lamps
and oil for the light;
And the incense altar,
and his
staves,
and the
anointing oil,
and the sweet incense,
and the hanging for the door at the entering in of the tabernacle,
the altar of burnt offering with its bronze
grate, its poles,
and all its utensils; the basin with its stand;
The hangings of the court, his pillars, and their sockets, and the hanging for the door of the court,
The pins of the tabernacle, and the pins of the court, and their cords,
the tent pegs for the tabernacle
and for the
courtyard, along with their ropes;
The cloths of service, to do service in the holy place, the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments of his sons, to minister in the priest’s office.
and the
woven garments for ministering in the holy place—both the holy garments for Aaron the priest
and the garments for his sons to serve as priests.”
And all the congregation of the children of Israel departed from the presence of Moses.
Then the whole congregation of Israel withdrew from the presence of Moses.
And they came, every one whose heart
stirred him up,
and every one whom his spirit made willing,
and they brought the LORD’S offering to the work of the tabernacle of the congregation,
and for all his service,
and for the holy garments.
And everyone whose heart
stirred him
and whose spirit
prompted him came
and brought an offering to the LORD for the work on the Tent of Meeting, for all its services,
and for the holy garments.
And they came, both men and women, as many as were willing hearted, and brought bracelets, and earrings, and rings, and tablets, all jewels of gold: and every man that offered offered an offering of gold unto the LORD.
So all who had willing hearts, both men
and women, came
and brought brooches
and earrings, rings
and necklaces,
and all kinds of gold
jewelry.
And they all presented their gold as a wave offering to the LORD.
And every man, with whom was found blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen, and goats’ hair, and red skins of rams, and badgers’ skins, brought them.
Everyone who had blue, purple, or scarlet yarn, or fine linen, goat hair, ram skins
dyed red, or articles of fine leather, brought them.
Every one that did offer an offering of silver
and brass brought the LORD’S offering:
and every man, with whom was found
shittim wood for any work of the service, brought it.
And all who could present an offering of silver or bronze brought it as a contribution to the LORD. Also,
everyone who had
acacia wood for any part of the service brought it.
And all the women that were wise hearted did
spin with their hands,
and brought that which they had
spun, both of blue,
and of purple,
and of scarlet,
and of fine linen.
Every skilled woman
spun with her hands
and brought what she had
spun: blue, purple, or scarlet yarn, or fine linen.
And all the women whose heart
stirred them up in wisdom
spun goats’ hair.
And all the skilled women whose hearts were
stirred spun the goat hair.
The leaders brought
onyx stones
and gemstones to mount on the
ephod and breastpiece,
And spice,
and oil for the light,
and for the
anointing oil,
and for the sweet incense.
as well as spices
and olive oil for the light, for the
anointing oil,
and for the
fragrant incense.
The children of Israel brought a willing offering unto the LORD, every man and woman, whose heart made them willing to bring for all manner of work, which the LORD had commanded to be made by the hand of Moses.
So all the men
and women of the Israelites whose hearts
prompted them brought a
freewill offering to the LORD for all the work that the LORD through Moses had commanded them to do.
And Moses said unto the children of Israel, See, the LORD hath called by name Bezaleel the son of
Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah;
Then Moses said to the Israelites, “See, the LORD has called by name Bezalel son of
Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah.
And he hath filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding,
and in knowledge,
and in all manner of
workmanship;
And He has filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability,
and knowledge in all kinds of
craftsmanship,
And to
devise curious works, to work in gold,
and in silver,
and in brass,
to design artistic works in gold, silver, and bronze,
And in the cutting of stones, to set them,
and in
carving of wood, to make any manner of
cunning work.
to cut gemstones for settings,
and to
carve wood, so that he may be a master of every artistic craft.
And he hath put in his heart that he may teach, both he,
and Aholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of
Dan.
And the LORD has given both him
and Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of
Dan, the ability to teach others.
Them hath he filled with wisdom of heart, to work all manner of work, of the
engraver,
and of the
cunning workman,
and of the
embroiderer, in blue,
and in purple, in scarlet,
and in fine linen,
and of the
weaver, even of them that do any work,
and of those that
devise cunning work.
He has filled them with skill to do all kinds of work as engravers, designers, embroiderers in blue, purple, and scarlet yarn and fine linen, and as weavers—as artistic designers of every kind of craft.
Then wrought Bezaleel and Aholiab, and every wise hearted man, in whom the LORD put wisdom and understanding to know how to work all manner of work for the service of the sanctuary, according to all that the LORD had commanded.
“So Bezalel, Oholiab, and every skilled person are to carry out everything commanded by the LORD, who has given them skill and ability to know how to perform all the work of constructing the sanctuary.”
And Moses called Bezaleel
and Aholiab,
and every wise hearted man, in whose heart the LORD had put wisdom, even every one whose heart
stirred him up to come unto the work to do it:
Then Moses summoned Bezalel, Oholiab,
and every skilled person whom the LORD had gifted—
everyone whose heart
stirred him to come
and do the work.
And they received of Moses all the offering, which the children of Israel had brought for the work of the service of the sanctuary, to make it
withal.
And they brought yet unto him free offerings every morning.
They received from Moses all the contributions that the Israelites had brought to carry out the service of constructing the sanctuary. Meanwhile, the people continued to bring
freewill offerings morning after morning,
And all the wise men, that wrought all the work of the sanctuary, came every man from his work which they made;
so that all the skilled
craftsmen who were doing all the work on the sanctuary left their work
And they spake unto Moses, saying, The people bring much more than enough for the service of the work, which the LORD commanded to make.
and said to Moses, “The people are bringing more than enough for doing the work the LORD has commanded us to do.”
And Moses gave commandment, and they caused it to be proclaimed throughout the camp, saying, Let neither man nor woman make any more work for the offering of the sanctuary. So the people were restrained from bringing.
After Moses had given an order, they sent a
proclamation throughout the camp: “No man or woman should make anything else as an offering for the sanctuary.” So the people were restrained from bringing more,
For the stuff they had was sufficient for all the work to make it, and too much.
since what they already had was more than enough to perform all the work.
