Dan went up to fight against Leshem,
and took it,
and smote it with the edge of the sword,
and possessed it,
and dwelt therein,
and called Leshem,
Dan, after the name of
Dan their father.
(Later, when the territory of the Danites was lost to them, they went up
and fought against Leshem, captured it,
and put it to the sword. So they took possession of Leshem, settled there,
and renamed it after their father

According to the word of the LORD they gave him the city which he asked, even Timnath-serah in mount Ephraim: and he built the city, and dwelt therein.
as the LORD had commanded. They gave him the city of Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim, as he requested. He rebuilt the city and settled in it.
These are the inheritances which
Eleazar the priest,
and Joshua the son of
Nun,
and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, divided for an inheritance by lot in
Shiloh before the LORD, at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. So they made an end of dividing the country.
These are the inheritances that
Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of
Nun,
and the heads of the families distributed by lot to the tribes of Israel at
Shiloh before the LORD at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. So they finished dividing up the land.
And when he that
doth flee unto one of those cities shall stand at the entering of the gate of the city,
and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city, they shall take him into the city unto them,
and give him a place, that he may dwell among them.
When someone flees to one of these cities, stands at the entrance of the city gate, and states his case before its elders, they are to bring him into the city and give him a place to live among them.
Now if the
avenger of blood pursues him, they must not surrender the
manslayer into his hand, because that man killed his
neighbor accidentally without prior
malice.
And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment,
and until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days: then shall the
slayer return,
and come unto his own city,
and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled.
He is to stay in that city until he stands trial before the assembly
and until the death of the high priest serving at that time. Then the
manslayer may return to his own home in the city from which he fled.”
And they appointed Kedesh in
Galilee in mount
Naphtali,
and Shechem in mount Ephraim,
and Kirjath-arba, which is
Hebron, in the mountain of Judah.
So they set apart Kedesh in
Galilee in the hill country of
Naphtali,
Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim,
and Kiriath-arba (that is,
Hebron) in the hill country of Judah.
These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel,
and for the stranger that sojourneth among them, that
whosoever killeth any person at unawares might
flee thither,
and not die by the hand of the
avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation.
These are the cities appointed for all the Israelites
and foreigners among them, so that
anyone who kills a person
unintentionally may
flee there
and not die by the hand of the
avenger of blood prior to standing trial before the assembly.
Then came near the heads of the fathers of the Levites unto
Eleazar the priest,
and unto Joshua the son of
Nun,
and unto the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel;
Now the family heads of the Levites approached
Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of
Nun,
and the heads of the other tribes of Israel
And they spake unto them at
Shiloh in the land of
Canaan, saying, The LORD commanded by the hand of Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with the suburbs thereof for our cattle.
at
Shiloh in the land of
Canaan and said to them, “The LORD commanded through Moses that we be given cities in which to live, together with pasturelands for our
livestock.”
And the children of Israel gave unto the Levites out of their inheritance, at the commandment of the LORD, these cities and their suburbs.
So by the command of the LORD, the Israelites gave the Levites these cities and their pasturelands out of their own inheritance:
And the lot came out for the families of the Kohathites:
and the children of Aaron the priest, which were of the Levites, had by lot out of the tribe of Judah,
and out of the tribe of
Simeon,
and out of the tribe of Benjamin, thirteen cities.
The first lot came out for the Kohathite clans. The Levites who were descendants of Aaron the priest received thirteen cities by lot from the tribes of Judah,
Simeon,
and Benjamin.
And the rest of the children of
Kohath had by lot out of the families of the tribe of Ephraim,
and out of the tribe of
Dan,
and out of the half tribe of
Manasseh, ten cities.
The remaining descendants of
Kohath received ten cities by lot from the tribes of Ephraim,
Dan,
and the half-tribe of
Manasseh.
And the children of Gershon had by lot out of the families of the tribe of

Manasseh in
Bashan, thirteen cities.
The children of Merari by their families had out of the tribe of
Reuben,
and out of the tribe of
Gad,
and out of the tribe of
Zebulun, twelve cities.
And the descendants of Merari received twelve cities from the tribes of
Reuben,
Gad,
and Zebulun.
And the children of Israel gave by lot unto the Levites these cities with their suburbs, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.
So the Israelites
allotted to the Levites these cities, together with their pasturelands, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.
And they gave out of the tribe of the children of Judah,
and out of the tribe of the children of
Simeon, these cities which are here mentioned by name,
From the tribes of Judah
and Simeon, they designated these cities by name
And they gave them the city of Arba the father of
Anak, which city is
Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, with the suburbs thereof round about it.
They gave them Kiriath-arba (that is,
Hebron), with its surrounding pasturelands, in the hill country of Judah. (Arba was the father of
Anak.)
But the fields of the city,
and the villages thereof, gave they to
Caleb the son of Jephunneh for his possession.
But they had given the fields
and villages around the city to
Caleb son of Jephunneh as his possession.
Thus they gave to the children of Aaron the priest
Hebron with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the
slayer;
and Libnah with her suburbs,
So to the descendants of Aaron the priest they gave these cities, together with their pasturelands:
Hebron, a city of refuge for the
manslayer,
Libnah,
And Jattir with her suburbs, and Eshtemoa with her suburbs,
Jattir, Eshtemoa,
And Holon with her suburbs, and Debir with her suburbs,
Holon, Debir,

Ain, Juttah,
and Beth-shemesh—nine cities from these two tribes, together with their pasturelands.
And out of the tribe of Benjamin,
Gibeon with her suburbs, Geba with her suburbs,
And from the tribe of Benjamin they gave them
Gibeon, Geba,
Anathoth with her suburbs,
and Almon with her suburbs; four cities.
Anathoth,
and Almon—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
And the families of the children of
Kohath, the Levites which remained of the children of
Kohath, even they had the cities of their lot out of the tribe of Ephraim.
The remaining Kohathite clans of the Levites were
allotted these cities:
For they gave them
Shechem with her suburbs in mount Ephraim, to be a city of refuge for the
slayer;
and Gezer with her suburbs,
From the tribe of Ephraim they were given
Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim (a city of refuge for the
manslayer),
Gezer,
And Kibzaim with her suburbs, and Beth-horon with her suburbs; four cities.
Kibzaim, and Beth-horon—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
And out of the tribe of
Dan, Eltekeh with her suburbs, Gibbethon with her suburbs,
From the tribe of
Dan they were given Elteke, Gibbethon,
And out of the half tribe of
Manasseh, Tanach with her suburbs,
and Gath-
rimmon with her suburbs; two cities.
And from the half-tribe of
Manasseh they were given Taanach
and Gath-
rimmon—two cities, together with their pasturelands.
And unto the children of Gershon, of the families of the Levites, out of the other half tribe of
Manasseh they gave Golan in
Bashan with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the
slayer;
and Beesh-terah with her suburbs; two cities.
This is what the
Levite clans of the Gershonites were given: From the half-tribe of
Manasseh they were given Golan in
Bashan, a city of refuge for the
manslayer,
and Beeshterah—two cities, together with their pasturelands.
And out of the tribe of
Issachar,
Kishon with her suburbs, Dabareh with her suburbs,
From the tribe of
Issachar they were given Kishion, Daberath,
Jarmuth with her suburbs, En-gannim with her suburbs; four cities.
Jarmuth, and En-gannim—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
And out of the tribe of Asher, Mishal with her suburbs, Abdon with her suburbs,
From the tribe of Asher they were given Mishal, Abdon,
Helkath with her suburbs, and Rehob with her suburbs; four cities.
Helkath, and Rehob—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
And out of the tribe of
Naphtali, Kedesh in
Galilee with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the
slayer;
and Hammoth-
dor with her suburbs,
and Kartan with her suburbs; three cities.
And from the tribe of
Naphtali they were given Kedesh in
Galilee (a city of refuge for the
manslayer), Hammoth-
dor,
and Kartan—three cities, together with their pasturelands.
And unto the families of the children of Merari, the rest of the Levites, out of the tribe of
Zebulun, Jokneam with her suburbs,
and Kartah with her suburbs,
This is what the Merarite clan (the rest of the Levites) were given:
Dimnah with her suburbs, Nahalal with her suburbs; four cities.
From the tribe of
Zebulun they were given Jokneam, Kartah, Dimnah,
and Nahalal—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
And out of the tribe of
Reuben,
Bezer with her suburbs,
and Jahazah with her suburbs,
Kedemoth with her suburbs, and Mephaath with her suburbs; four cities.
Kedemoth, and Mephaath—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
Heshbon with her suburbs, Jazer with her suburbs; four cities in all.
Heshbon,
and Jazer—four cities in all, together with their pasturelands.
All the cities of the Levites within the possession of the children of Israel were forty and eight cities with their suburbs.
For the Levites, then, there were forty-eight cities in all, together with their pasturelands, within the territory of the Israelites.
And the LORD gave unto Israel all the land which he
sware to give unto their fathers;
and they possessed it,
and dwelt therein.
Thus the LORD gave Israel all the land He had
sworn to give their fathers,
and they took possession of it
and settled in it.
And the LORD gave them rest round about, according to all that he
sware unto their fathers:
and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.
And the LORD gave them rest on every side, just as He had
sworn to their fathers. None of their enemies could stand against them, for the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.
Then Joshua called the Reubenites,
and the Gadites,
and the half tribe of
Manasseh,
Then Joshua summoned the Reubenites, the Gadites,
and the half-tribe of
Manasseh And said unto them, Ye have kept all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you:
and told them, “You have done all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and you have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you.
And now the LORD your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he promised them: therefore now return ye, and get you unto your tents, and unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the other side Jordan.
And now that the LORD your God has given your brothers rest as He promised them, you may return to your homes in the land that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you across the Jordan.
But take
diligent heed to do the commandment
and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God,
and to walk in all his ways,
and to keep his commandments,
and to
cleave unto him,
and to serve him with all your heart
and with all your soul.
But be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: to love the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, to keep His commandments, to hold fast to Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
So Joshua blessed them, and sent them away: and they went unto their tents.
So Joshua blessed them and sent them on their way, and they went to their homes.
Now to the one half of the tribe of
Manasseh Moses had given possession in
Bashan: but unto the other half thereof gave Joshua among their brethren on this side Jordan westward.
And when Joshua sent them away also unto their tents, then he blessed them,
(To the half-tribe of
Manasseh Moses had given land in
Bashan,
and to the other half Joshua gave land on the west side of the Jordan among their brothers.) When Joshua sent them to their homes he blessed them,
And he spake unto them, saying, Return with much riches unto your tents,
and with very much cattle, with silver,
and with gold,
and with brass,
and with iron,
and with very much
raiment: divide the
spoil of your enemies with your brethren.
saying, “Return to your homes with your great wealth, with immense herds of
livestock, with silver, gold, bronze, iron,
and very many clothes. Divide with your brothers the
spoil of your enemies.”
And the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the half tribe of
Manasseh returned,
and departed from the children of Israel out of
Shiloh, which is in the land of
Canaan, to go unto the country of
Gilead, to the land of their possession,
whereof they were possessed, according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses.
So the Reubenites, the Gadites,
and the half-tribe of
Manasseh left the Israelites at
Shiloh in the land of
Canaan to return to their own land of
Gilead, which they had acquired according to the command of the LORD through Moses.
And when they came unto the borders of Jordan, that are in the land of
Canaan, the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the half tribe of
Manasseh built there an altar by Jordan, a great altar to see to.
And when they came to Geliloth near the Jordan in the land of
Canaan, the Reubenites, the Gadites,
and the half-tribe of
Manasseh built an imposing altar there by the Jordan.
And the children of Israel heard say, Behold, the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the half tribe of
Manasseh have built an altar over against the land of
Canaan, in the borders of Jordan, at the passage of the children of Israel.
Then the Israelites received the report: “Behold, the Reubenites, the Gadites,
and the half-tribe of
Manasseh have built an altar on the border of the land of
Canaan, at Geliloth near the Jordan on the
Israelite side.”
And when the children of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered themselves together at
Shiloh, to go up to war against them.
And when they heard this, the whole congregation of Israel assembled at
Shiloh to go to war against them.
And with him ten princes, of each chief house a prince throughout all the tribes of Israel; and each one was an head of the house of their fathers among the thousands of Israel.
With him they sent ten chiefs—one family leader from each tribe of Israel, each the head of a family among the clans of Israel.
And they came unto the children of
Reuben,
and to the children of
Gad,
and to the half tribe of
Manasseh, unto the land of
Gilead,
and they spake with them, saying,
They went to the Reubenites, the Gadites,
and the half-tribe of
Manasseh in the land of
Gilead and said to them,
Thus saith the whole congregation of the LORD, What
trespass is this that ye have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following the LORD, in that ye have builded you an altar, that ye might
rebel this day against the LORD?
“This is what the whole congregation of the LORD says: ‘What is this breach of faith you have committed
today against the God of Israel by turning away from the LORD
and building for
yourselves an altar, that you might
rebel against the LORD this day?
But that ye must turn away this day from following the LORD?
and it will be, seeing ye
rebel to day against the LORD, that to
morrow he will be
wroth with the whole congregation of Israel.
And now, would you turn away from the LORD? If you
rebel today against the LORD,
tomorrow He will be
angry with the whole congregation of Israel.
Notwithstanding, if the land of your possession be unclean, then pass ye over unto the land of the possession of the LORD, wherein the LORD’S tabernacle dwelleth,
and take possession among us: but
rebel not against the LORD, nor
rebel against us, in building you an altar beside the altar of the LORD our God.
If indeed the land of your inheritance is unclean, then cross over to the land of the LORD’s possession, where the LORD’s tabernacle stands,
and take possession of it among us. But do not
rebel against the LORD or against us by building for
yourselves an altar other than the altar of the LORD our God.
Did not
Achan the son of Zerah commit a
trespass in the
accursed thing,
and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel?
and that man perished not alone in his iniquity.
Was not
Achan son of Zerah unfaithful regarding what was set apart for destruction, bringing wrath upon the whole congregation of Israel? Yet it was not only
Achan who perished because of his sin!’”
Then the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the half tribe of
Manasseh answered,
and said unto the heads of the thousands of Israel,
Then the Reubenites, the Gadites,
and the half-tribe of
Manasseh answered the leaders of the clans of Israel:
The LORD God of gods, the LORD God of gods, he knoweth,
and Israel he shall know; if it be in rebellion, or if in
transgression against the LORD, (save us not this day,)
“The LORD, the Mighty One, is God! The LORD, the Mighty One, is God! He knows,
and may Israel also know. If this was in rebellion or breach of faith against the LORD, do not
spare us
today.
That we have built us an altar to turn from following the LORD, or if to offer
thereon burnt offering or meat offering, or if to offer peace offerings
thereon, let the LORD himself require it;
If we have built for ourselves an altar to turn away from Him
and to offer burnt offerings
and grain offerings on it, or to sacrifice
fellowship offerings on it, may the LORD Himself hold us accountable.
