And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life,
and a
nourisher of thine old age: for thy daughter in law, which loveth thee, which is better to thee than seven sons, hath born him.
He will renew your life
and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you
and is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth.”
And Naomi took the child,
and laid it in her
bosom,
and became
nurse unto it.
And Naomi took the child, placed him on her
lap,
and became a
nurse to him.
And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to
Naomi;
and they called his name Obed: he is the father of
Jesse, the father of David.
The
neighbor women said, “A son has been born to
Naomi,”
and they named him Obed. He became the father of
Jesse, the father of David.
Hezron was the father of Ram, Ram was the father of
Amminadab,
Amminadab was the father of Nahshon, Nahshon was the father of Salmon,
Salmon was the father of Boaz, Boaz was the father of Obed,
Obed was the father of
Jesse,
and Jesse was the father of David.
Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of mount Ephraim,
and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of
Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite:
Now there was a man named Elkanah who was from Ramathaim-zophim in the hill country of Ephraim. He was the son of Jeroham, the son of
Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.
And he had two wives; the name of the one was
Hannah,
and the name of the other Peninnah:
and Peninnah had children, but
Hannah had no children.
He had two wives, one named
Hannah and the other Peninnah.
And Peninnah had children, but
Hannah had none.
And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship
and to sacrifice unto the LORD of hosts in
Shiloh.
And the two sons of
Eli,
Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there.
Year after year Elkanah would go up from his city to worship
and sacrifice to the LORD of Hosts at
Shiloh, where
Eli’s two sons,
Hophni and Phinehas, were priests to the LORD.
And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:
And whenever the day came for Elkanah to present his sacrifice, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.
And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she
provoked her; therefore she
wept,
and did not eat.
And this went on year after year. Whenever
Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, her rival
taunted her until she
wept and would not eat.
Then said Elkanah her husband to her,
Hannah, why weepest thou?
and why eatest thou not?
and why is thy heart
grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?
“
Hannah, why are you crying?” her husband Elkanah asked. “Why won’t you eat? Why is your heart so
grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?”
So
Hannah rose up after they had eaten in
Shiloh,
and after they had
drunk. Now
Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the LORD.
So after they had finished eating
and drinking in
Shiloh,
Hannah stood up. Now
Eli the priest was sitting on a chair by the
doorpost of the temple of the LORD.
And she was in bitterness of soul,
and prayed unto the LORD,
and wept sore.
In her bitter distress,
Hannah prayed to the LORD
and wept with many tears.
And she
vowed a
vow,
and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou
wilt indeed look on the
affliction of thine
handmaid,
and remember me,
and not
forget thine
handmaid, but
wilt give unto thine
handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life,
and there shall no
razor come upon his head.
And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that
Eli marked her mouth.
As
Hannah kept on praying before the LORD,
Eli watched her mouth.
Now
Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore
Eli thought she had been
drunken.
Hannah was praying in her heart,
and though her lips were moving, her voice could not be heard. So
Eli thought she was
drunk And Eli said unto her, How long
wilt thou be
drunken? put away thy wine from thee.
and said to her, “How long will you be
drunk? Put away your wine!”
And Hannah answered
and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have
drunken neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.
“No, my lord,”
Hannah replied. “I am a woman
oppressed in spirit. I have not had any wine or strong drink, but I have poured out my soul before the LORD.
Count not thine
handmaid for a daughter of
Belial: for out of the abundance of my
complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.
Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; for all this time I have been praying out of the depth of my
anguish and grief.”
Then
Eli answered
and said, Go in peace:
and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.
“Go in peace,”
Eli replied, “
and may the God of Israel grant the petition you have asked of Him.”
And she said, Let thine
handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way,
and did eat,
and her countenance was no more
sad.
“May your
maidservant find favor with you,” said
Hannah. Then she went on her way,
and she began eating again,
and her face was no longer
downcast.
And they rose up in the morning early,
and worshipped before the LORD,
and returned,
and came to their house to
Ramah:
and Elkanah knew
Hannah his wife;
and the LORD remembered her.
The next morning Elkanah
and Hannah got up early to bow in worship before the LORD,
and then returned home to
Ramah.
And Elkanah had relations with his wife
Hannah,
and the LORD remembered her.
Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after
Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son,
and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.
So in the course of time,
Hannah conceived
and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked for him from the LORD.”
And the man Elkanah,
and all his house, went up to offer unto the LORD the yearly sacrifice,
and his
vow.
Then Elkanah
and all his house went up to make the annual sacrifice to the LORD
and to
fulfill his
vow,
But
Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be
weaned,
and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD,
and there
abide for ever.
but
Hannah did not go. “After the boy is
weaned,” she said to her husband, “I will take him to appear before the LORD
and to stay there permanently.”
And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good;
tarry until thou have
weaned him; only the LORD establish his word. So the woman abode,
and gave her son
suck until she
weaned him.
“Do what you think is best,” her husband Elkanah replied, “
and stay here until you have
weaned him. Only may the LORD
confirm His word.” So
Hannah stayed
and nursed her son until she had
weaned him.
And when she had
weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks,
and one
ephah of flour,
and a
bottle of wine,
and brought him unto the house of the LORD in
Shiloh:
and the child was young.
Once she had
weaned him,
Hannah took the boy with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an
ephah of flour,
and a skin of wine. Though the boy was still young, she brought him to the house of the LORD at
Shiloh.
And when they had slaughtered the bull, they brought the boy to
Eli.
And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the LORD.
“Please, my lord,” said
Hannah, “as surely as you live, my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the LORD.
For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him:
I prayed for this boy, and since the LORD has granted me what I asked of Him,
Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there.
I now
dedicate the boy to the LORD. For as long as he lives, he is dedicated to the LORD.” So they worshiped the LORD there.
And Hannah prayed,
and said, My heart rejoiceth in the LORD, mine horn is
exalted in the LORD: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I
rejoice in thy salvation.
At that time
Hannah prayed: “My heart rejoices in the LORD in whom my horn is
exalted. My mouth speaks boldly against my enemies, for I
rejoice in Your salvation.
There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.
There is no one holy like the LORD. Indeed, there is no one besides You! And there is no Rock like our God.
Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not
arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge,
and by him actions are
weighed.
Do not
boast so proudly, or let
arrogance come from your mouth, for the LORD is a God who knows,
and by Him actions are
weighed.
The bows of the mighty men are broken,
and they that
stumbled are
girded with strength.
The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble are
equipped with strength.
They that were full have
hired out themselves for bread;
and they that were
hungry ceased: so that the barren hath born seven;
and she that hath many children is waxed feeble.
The well-fed
hire themselves out for food, but the
starving hunger no more. The barren woman gives birth to seven, but she who has many sons pines away.
The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up.
The LORD brings death
and gives life; He brings down to
Sheol and raises up.
The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up.
The LORD sends poverty and wealth; He humbles and He exalts.
He raiseth up the poor out of the dust,
and lifteth up the
beggar from the
dunghill, to set them among princes,
and to make them
inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD’S,
and he hath set the world upon them.
He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the
needy from the ash
heap. He seats them among princes
and bestows on them a throne of honor. For the foundations of the earth are the LORD’s,
and upon them He has set the world.
He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail.
He guards the steps of His faithful ones, but the wicked perish in darkness; for by his own strength shall no man prevail.
The
adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he
thunder upon them: the LORD shall judge the ends of the earth;
and he shall give strength unto his king,
and exalt the horn of his
anointed.
Those who
oppose the LORD will be
shattered. He will
thunder from heaven against them. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth
and will give power to His king. He will
exalt the horn of His
anointed.”
And Elkanah went to
Ramah to his house.
And the child did minister unto the LORD before
Eli the priest.
Then Elkanah went home to
Ramah, but the boy began ministering to the LORD before
Eli the priest.
And the priest’s custom with the people was, that, when any man offered sacrifice, the priest’s servant came, while the flesh was in
seething, with a
fleshhook of three teeth in his hand;
or for the custom of the priests with the people. When any man offered a sacrifice, the servant of the priest would come with a three-
pronged meat
fork while the meat was boiling
And he struck it into the pan, or
kettle, or
caldron, or pot; all that the
fleshhook brought up the priest took for himself. So they did in
Shiloh unto all the Israelites that came thither.
and plunge it into the pan or
kettle or cauldron or
cooking pot.
And the priest would claim for himself whatever the meat
fork brought up. This is how they treated all the Israelites who came to
Shiloh.
Also before they burnt the fat, the priest’s servant came,
and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to
roast for the priest; for he will not have
sodden flesh of thee, but raw.
Even before the fat was burned, the servant of the priest would come
and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give the priest some meat to
roast, because he will not accept boiled meat from you, but only raw.”
And if any man said unto him, Let them not fail to burn the fat presently,
and then take as much as thy soul desireth; then he would answer him,
Nay; but thou shalt give it me now:
and if not, I will take it by force.
And if any man said to him, “The fat must be burned first; then you may take whatever you want,” the servant would reply, “No, you must give it to me right now. If you refuse, I will take it by force!”
Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.
Each year his mother would make him a little
robe and bring it to him when she went with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice.
And Eli blessed Elkanah
and his wife,
and said, The LORD give thee seed of this woman for the
loan which is lent to the LORD.
And they went unto their own home.
And Eli would
bless Elkanah
and his wife, saying, “May the LORD give you children by this woman in place of the one she dedicated to the LORD.” Then they would go home.
And the LORD visited
Hannah, so that she conceived,
and bare three sons
and two daughters.
And the child Samuel grew before the LORD.
So the LORD attended to
Hannah,
and she conceived
and gave birth to three sons
and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the LORD.
Now
Eli was very old,
and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel;
and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
Now
Eli was very old,
and he heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel
and how they were sleeping with the women who served at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
And he said unto them, Why do ye such things? for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people.
“Why are you doing these things?”
Eli said to his sons. “I hear about your wicked deeds from all these people.
And the child Samuel grew on, and was in favour both with the LORD, and also with men.
And the boy Samuel continued to grow in
stature and in favor with the LORD
and with man.
And there came a man of God unto
Eli,
and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house?
Then a man of God came to
Eli and told him, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Did I not clearly
reveal Myself to your father’s house when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh’s house?
And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to offer upon mine altar, to burn incense, to wear an
ephod before me?
and did I give unto the house of thy father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel?
And out of all the tribes of Israel I selected your father to be My priest, to offer sacrifices on My altar, to burn incense,
and to wear an
ephod in My presence. I also gave to the house of your father all the offerings of the Israelites made by fire.
Wherefore
kick ye at my sacrifice
and at mine offering, which I have commanded in my
habitation;
and honourest thy sons above me, to make
yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?
Why then do you
kick at My sacrifice
and offering that I have prescribed for My dwelling place? You have honored your sons more than Me by
fattening yourselves with the best of all the offerings of My people Israel.’
Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house,
and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour,
and they that
despise me shall be lightly esteemed.
Therefore, the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I did indeed say that your house
and the house of your father would walk before Me
forever. But now the LORD declares: Far be it from Me! For I will honor those who honor Me, but those who
despise Me will be
disdained.
Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father’s house, that there shall not be an old man in thine house.
Behold, the days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your father’s house, so that no older man will be left in your house.
And thou shalt see an enemy in my
habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israel:
and there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever.
You will see distress in My dwelling place.
Despite all that is good in Israel, no one in your house will ever again reach old age.
And the man of thine, whom I shall not cut off from mine altar, shall be to
consume thine eyes,
and to
grieve thine heart:
and all the increase of thine house shall die in the flower of their age.
And every one of you that I do not cut off from My altar, your eyes will fail
and your heart will
grieve. All your descendants will die by the sword of men.
And this shall be a sign unto thee, that shall come upon thy two sons, on
Hophni and Phinehas; in one day they shall die both of them.
And this sign shall come to you concerning your two sons
Hophni and Phinehas: They will both die on the same day.
And I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in mine heart
and in my mind:
and I will build him a sure house;
and he shall walk before mine
anointed for ever.
Then I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest. He will do whatever is in My heart
and mind.
And I will build for him an
enduring house,
and he will walk before My
anointed one for all time.
And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in thine house shall come
and crouch to him for a piece of silver
and a
morsel of bread,
and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the priests’ offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.
And everyone left in your house will come
and bow down to him for a piece of silver or a
morsel of bread,
pleading, “Please
appoint me to some priestly office so that I can eat a piece of bread.”’”
And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before
Eli.
And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision.
And the boy Samuel ministered to the LORD before
Eli. Now in those days the word of the LORD was rare
and visions were
scarce.
And it came to pass at that time, when
Eli was laid down in his place,
and his eyes began to wax
dim, that he could not see;
And at that time
Eli, whose
eyesight had grown so
dim that he could not see, was lying in his room.
And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was,
and Samuel was laid down to sleep;
Before the lamp of God had gone out, Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was
located.
That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I.
Then the LORD called to Samuel, and he answered, “Here I am.”
And he ran unto
Eli,
and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me.
And he said, I called not; lie down again.
And he went
and lay down.
He ran to
Eli and said, “Here I am, for you have called me.” “I did not call,”
Eli replied. “Go back
and lie down.” So he went
and lay down.
And the LORD called yet again, Samuel.
And Samuel arose
and went to
Eli,
and said, Here am I; for thou
didst call me.
And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.
Once again the LORD called, “Samuel!” So Samuel got up, went to
Eli,
and said, “Here I am, for you have called me.” “My son, I did not call,”
Eli replied. “Go back
and lie down.”
And the LORD called Samuel again the third time.
And he arose
and went to
Eli,
and said, Here am I; for thou
didst call me.
And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child.
Once again, for the third time, the LORD called to Samuel. He got up, went to
Eli,
and said, “Here I am, for you have called me.” Then
Eli realized that it was the LORD who was calling the boy.
Therefore
Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down:
and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went
and lay down in his place.
“Go
and lie down,” he said to Samuel, “
and if He calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for Your servant is
listening.’” So Samuel went
and lay down in his place.
And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.
Then the LORD came
and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!”
And Samuel answered, “Speak, for Your servant is
listening.”
And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall
tingle.
Then the LORD said to Samuel, “I am about to do something in Israel at which the ears of all who hear it will
tingle.
For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves
vile,
and he restrained them not.
I told him that I would judge his house
forever for the iniquity of which he knows, because his sons
blasphemed God
and he did not restrain them.
And therefore I have
sworn unto the house of
Eli, that the iniquity of
Eli’s house shall not be
purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever.
Therefore I have
sworn to the house of
Eli, ‘The iniquity of
Eli’s house shall never be
atoned for by sacrifice or offering.’”
And Samuel lay until the morning,
and opened the doors of the house of the LORD.
And Samuel feared to
shew Eli the vision.
Samuel lay down until the morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the LORD. He was afraid to tell
Eli the vision,
Then
Eli called Samuel,
and said, Samuel, my son.
And he answered, Here am I.
but
Eli called to him
and said, “Samuel, my son.” “Here I am,” answered Samuel.
And he said, What is the thing that the LORD hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee.
“What was the message He gave you?”
Eli asked. “Do not hide it from me. May God
punish you,
and ever so severely, if you hide from me anything He said to you.”
And Samuel told him every
whit,
and hid nothing from him.
And he said, It is the LORD: let him do what seemeth him good.
So Samuel told him everything
and did not hide a thing from him. “He is the LORD,” replied
Eli. “Let Him do what is good in His eyes.”
And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.
And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and He let none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground.
And all Israel from
Dan even to Beer-
sheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD.
So all Israel from
Dan to
Beersheba knew that Samuel was confirmed as a prophet of the LORD.
And the LORD appeared again in
Shiloh: for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel in
Shiloh by the word of the LORD.
And the LORD continued to appear at
Shiloh, because there He revealed Himself to Samuel by His word.
And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Eben-ezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.
Thus the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now the Israelites went out to meet the Philistines in battle
and camped at
Ebenezer, while the Philistines camped at Aphek.
And the Philistines put themselves in
array against Israel:
and when they joined battle, Israel was
smitten before the Philistines:
and they
slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.
The Philistines
arrayed themselves against Israel,
and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who struck down about four thousand men on the battlefield.
And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD
smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us
fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of
Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.
When the troops returned to the camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why has the LORD brought defeat on us before the Philistines
today? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD from
Shiloh, so that it may go with us to save us from the hand of our enemies.”
So the people sent to
Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims:
and the two sons of
Eli,
Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
So the people sent men to
Shiloh,
and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the LORD of Hosts, who sits enthroned between the
cherubim.
And the two sons of
Eli,
Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel
shouted with a great
shout, so that the earth
rang again.
When the ark of the covenant of the LORD entered the camp, all the Israelites raised such a great
shout that it
shook the ground.
And when the Philistines heard the noise of the
shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great
shout in the camp of the Hebrews?
And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp.
On hearing the noise of the
shout, the Philistines asked, “What is this loud
shouting in the camp of the Hebrews?”
And when they realized that the ark of the LORD had entered the camp,
And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp.
And they said,
Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing
heretofore.
the Philistines were afraid. “The gods have entered their camp!” they said. “
Woe to us, for nothing like this has happened before.
Be strong,
and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you:
quit yourselves like men,
and fight.
Take courage and be men, O Philistines! Otherwise, you will serve the Hebrews just as they served you. Now be men and fight!”
And the Philistines fought,
and Israel was
smitten,
and they fled every man into his tent:
and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand
footmen.
So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and each man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great—thirty thousand foot soldiers of Israel fell.
And the ark of God was taken;
and the two sons of
Eli,
Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.
And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army,
and came to
Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent,
and with earth upon his head.
That same day a
Benjamite ran from the battle line all the way to
Shiloh, with his clothes
torn and dirt on his head.
And when he came, lo,
Eli sat upon a seat by the
wayside watching: for his heart
trembled for the ark of God.
And when the man came into the city,
and told it, all the city
cried out.
When he arrived, there was
Eli, sitting on his chair beside the road
and watching, because his heart
trembled for the ark of God. When the man entered the city to give a report, the whole city
cried out.
And when
Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this
tumult?
And the man came in
hastily,
and told
Eli.
Now
Eli was
ninety and eight years old;
and his eyes were
dim, that he could not see.
Now
Eli was
ninety-eight years old,
and his
gaze was fixed because he could not see.
And the man said unto
Eli, I am he that came out of the army,
and I fled to day out of the army.
And he said, What is there done, my son?
“I have just come from the battle,” the man said to
Eli. “I fled from there
today.” “What happened, my son?”
Eli asked.
And the
messenger answered
and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines,
and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people,
and thy two sons also,
Hophni and Phinehas, are dead,
and the ark of God is taken.
The
messenger answered, “Israel has fled before the Philistines,
and there has been a great slaughter among the people. Your two sons,
Hophni and Phinehas, are both dead,
and the ark of God has been captured.”
