Some of them also were appointed to oversee the vessels,
and all the instruments of the sanctuary,
and the fine flour,
and the wine,
and the oil,
and the
frankincense,
and the spices.

ointment of the spices.
And some of the sons of the priests mixed the spices.
And Mattithiah, one of the Levites, who was the
firstborn of Shallum the Korahite, had the set office over the things that were made in the pans.
A

firstborn son of Shallum the Korahite, was entrusted with
baking the bread.
And other of their brethren, of the sons of the Kohathites, were over the
shewbread, to prepare it every sabbath.
Some of their Kohathite brothers were responsible for preparing the rows of the
showbread every Sabbath.
And these are the singers, chief of the fathers of the Levites, who remaining in the chambers were free: for they were employed in that work day and night.
Those who were musicians, the heads of
Levite families, stayed in the temple chambers
and were
exempt from other duties because they were on duty day
and night.
These chief fathers of the Levites were chief throughout their generations; these dwelt at Jerusalem.
All these were heads of
Levite families, chiefs according to their
genealogies,
and they lived in Jerusalem.
And in
Gibeon dwelt the father of
Gibeon, Jehiel, whose wife’s name was Maachah:
And Gedor,
and Ahio,
and Zechariah,
and Mikloth.
And Mikloth
begat Shimeam.
And they also dwelt with their brethren at Jerusalem, over against their brethren.
Mikloth was the father of Shimeam. They too lived
alongside their relatives in Jerusalem.
Ner was the father of
Kish,
Kish was the father of Saul,
and Saul was the father of
Jonathan, Malchishua, Abinadab,
and Esh-
baal.
And the sons of
Micah were, Pithon,
and Melech,
and Tahrea,
and Ahaz.
The sons of
Micah: Pithon, Melech, Tahrea,
and Ahaz.
Ahaz was the father of Jarah; Jarah was the father of Alemeth, Azmaveth,
and Zimri;
and Zimri was the father of Moza.
And Moza
begat Binea;
and Rephaiah his son, Eleasah his son, Azel his son.
Moza was the father of Binea. Rephaiah was his son, Elasah his son, and Azel his son.
And Azel had six sons, whose names are these, Azrikam, Bocheru,
and Ishmael,
and Sheariah,
and Obadiah,
and Hanan: these were the sons of Azel.
And Azel had six sons,
and these were their names: Azrikam, Bocheru,
Ishmael, Sheariah,
Obadiah,
and Hanan. These were the sons of Azel.
Now the Philistines fought against Israel;
and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines,
and fell down slain in mount
Gilboa.
Now the Philistines fought against Israel,
and the men of Israel fled before them,
and many fell slain on Mount
Gilboa.
And the Philistines followed hard after Saul,
and after his sons;
and the Philistines
slew Jonathan,
and Abinadab,
and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul.
The Philistines followed hard after Saul
and his sons,
and they killed Saul’s sons
Jonathan, Abinadab,
and Malchishua.
And the battle went
sore against Saul,
and the archers
hit him,
and he was wounded of the archers.
When the battle
intensified against Saul, the archers overtook him
and wounded him.
Then said Saul to his armourbearer, Draw thy sword,
and thrust me through
therewith; lest these
uncircumcised come
and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was
sore afraid. So Saul took a sword,
and fell upon it.
Then Saul said to his
armor-bearer, “Draw your sword
and run it through me, or these
uncircumcised men will come
and torture me!” But his
armor-bearer was
terrified and refused to do it. So Saul took his own sword
and fell on it.
And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise on the sword, and died.
When his
armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his own sword
and died.
So Saul died, and his three sons, and all his house died together.
So Saul died together with his three sons and all his house.
And when all the men of Israel that were in the valley saw that they fled,
and that Saul
and his sons were dead, then they
forsook their cities,
and fled:
and the Philistines came
and dwelt in them.
When all the Israelites in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their cities and ran away. So the Philistines came and occupied their cities.
And it came to pass on the
morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul
and his sons fallen in mount
Gilboa.
The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul
and his sons fallen on Mount
Gilboa.
And when they had
stripped him, they took his head,
and his armour,
and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to carry
tidings unto their idols,
and to the people.
They
stripped Saul, cut off his head, took his
armor,
and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to
proclaim the news in the temple of their idols
and among their people.
And they put his armour in the house of their gods,
and fastened his head in the temple of
Dagon.
They put his
armor in the temple of their gods
and hung his head in the temple of
Dagon.
And when all
Jabesh-
gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,
When the people of
Jabesh-
gilead heard about everything the Philistines had done to Saul,
They arose, all the
valiant men,
and took away the body of Saul,
and the bodies of his sons,
and brought them to
Jabesh,
and buried their bones under the oak in
Jabesh,
and fasted seven days.
all their men of
valor set out
and retrieved the bodies of Saul
and his sons
and brought them to
Jabesh.
And they buried their bones under the oak in
Jabesh and fasted seven days.
So Saul died for his
transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not,
and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to
enquire of it;
So Saul died for his unfaithfulness to the LORD, because he did not keep the word of the LORD and even consulted a medium for guidance,
And enquired not of the LORD: therefore he
slew him,
and turned the kingdom unto David the son of
Jesse.
and he failed to inquire of the LORD. So the LORD put him to death
and turned the kingdom over to David son of
Jesse.
Then all Israel gathered themselves to David unto
Hebron, saying, Behold, we are thy bone
and thy flesh.
Then all Israel came together to David at
Hebron and said, “Here we are, your own flesh
and blood.
And moreover in time past, even when Saul was king, thou
wast he that leddest out
and broughtest in Israel:
and the LORD thy God said unto thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel,
and thou shalt be ruler over my people Israel,
and thou shalt be ruler over my people Israel.
Even in times past, while Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel out
and brought them back.
And the LORD your God said, ‘You will
shepherd My people Israel,
and you will be ruler over them.’”
Therefore came all the elders of Israel to the king to
Hebron;
and David made a covenant with them in
Hebron before the LORD;
and they
anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD by Samuel.
So all the elders of Israel came to the king at
Hebron, where David made a covenant with them before the LORD.
And they
anointed him king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD through Samuel.
And David
and all Israel went to Jerusalem, which is
Jebus; where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land.
Then David
and all the Israelites marched to Jerusalem (that is,
Jebus), where the Jebusites inhabited the land.
And the inhabitants of
Jebus said to David, Thou shalt not come
hither. Nevertheless David took the castle of
Zion, which is the city of David.
The people of
Jebus said to David, “You will never get in here.” Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of
Zion (that is, the City of David).
And David said,
Whosoever smiteth the Jebusites first shall be chief
and captain. So
Joab the son of Zeruiah went first up,
and was chief.
Now David had said, “
Whoever is the first to strike down a Jebusite will become chief commander.”
And Joab son of Zeruiah went up first,
and he became the chief.
And David dwelt in the castle; therefore they called it the city of David.
So David took up residence in the fortress; that is why it was called the City of David.
And he built the city round about, even from
Millo round about:
and Joab repaired the rest of the city.
He built up the city around it, from the supporting terraces to the surrounding wall, while
Joab restored the rest of the city.
So David waxed greater and greater: for the LORD of hosts was with him.
And David became greater and greater, for the LORD of Hosts was with him.
These also are the chief of the mighty men whom David had, who strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom, and with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel.
Now these were the chiefs of David’s mighty men, who, together with all Israel,
bolstered and strengthened his kingdom, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel.
And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had; Jashobeam, an Hachmonite, the chief of the captains: he lifted up his
spear against three hundred slain by him at one time.
This is the list of David’s mighty men: Jashobeam son of Hachmoni was chief of the officers; he
wielded his
spear against three hundred men, whom he killed at one time.
Next in command was
Eleazar son of
Dodo the Ahohite, one of the three mighty men.
He was with David at
Pas-dammim,
and there the Philistines were gathered together to battle, where was a
parcel of ground full of barley;
and the people fled from before the Philistines.
He was with David at
Pas-dammim when the Philistines gathered there for battle. At the place with a field full of barley, the troops fled from the Philistines.
And they set themselves in the midst of that
parcel,
and delivered it,
and slew the Philistines;
and the LORD saved them by a great
deliverance.
But
Eleazar and David stationed themselves in the middle of the field
and defended it. They struck down the Philistines,
and the LORD brought about a great victory.
Now three of the thirty captains went down to the rock to David, into the cave of
Adullam;
and the host of the Philistines
encamped in the valley of
Rephaim.
Three of the thirty chief men went down to David, to the rock at the cave of
Adullam, while a company of Philistines was
encamped in the Valley of
Rephaim.
And David was then in the hold,
and the Philistines’ garrison was then at
Bethlehem.
At that time David was in the
stronghold,
and the garrison of the Philistines was at
Bethlehem.
And David longed,
and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of
Bethlehem, that is at the gate!
David longed for water
and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of
Bethlehem!”
And the three
brake through the host of the Philistines,
and drew water out of the well of
Bethlehem, that was by the gate,
and took it,
and brought it to David: but David would not drink of it, but poured it out to the LORD,
So the Three broke through the
Philistine camp, drew water from the well at the gate of
Bethlehem,
and brought it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the LORD,
And said, My God
forbid it me, that I should do this thing: shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in
jeopardy? for with the
jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mightiest.
saying, “Far be it from me, my God, to do this! How can I drink the blood of these men who risked their lives?” Because they had brought it at the risk of their lives, David refused to drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty men.
And Abishai the brother of
Joab, he was chief of the three: for lifting up his
spear against three hundred, he
slew them,
and had a name among the three.
Now
Abishai, the brother of
Joab, was chief of the Three,
and he lifted his
spear against three hundred men, killed them,
and won a name along with the Three.
Of the three, he was more honourable than the two; for he was their captain:
howbeit he attained not to the first three.
He was
doubly honored above the Three,
and he became their commander, even though he was not included among the Three.
Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a
valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done many acts; he
slew two
lionlike men of Moab: also he went down
and slew a lion in a pit in a
snowy day.
And Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a man of
valor from Kabzeel, a man of many exploits. He struck down two champions of Moab,
and on a
snowy day he went down into a pit
and killed a lion.
And he
slew an Egyptian, a man of great
stature, five cubits high;
and in the Egyptian’s hand was a
spear like a
weaver’s beam;
and he went down to him with a staff,
and plucked the
spear out of the Egyptian’s hand,
and slew him with his own
spear.
He also killed an Egyptian, a huge man five cubits tall. Although the Egyptian had a
spear like a
weaver’s beam in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club,
snatched the
spear from his hand,
and killed the Egyptian with his own
spear.
These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada,
and had the name among the three
mighties.
These were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada, who won a name
alongside the three mighty men.
Behold, he was honourable among the thirty, but attained not to the first three: and David set him over his guard.
He was most honored among the Thirty, but he did not become one of the Three. And David appointed him over his guard.
Adina the son of Shiza the Reubenite, a captain of the Reubenites, and thirty with him,
Adina son of Shiza the Reubenite, chief of the Reubenites, and the thirty with him,
Hanan the son of Maachah, and Joshaphat the Mithnite,
Hanan son of
Maacah, Joshaphat the Mithnite,
Uzzia the Ashterathite,
Shama and Jehiel the sons of Hothan the Aroerite,
Uzzia the Ashterathite,
Shama and Jeiel the sons of Hotham the Aroerite,
Jediael the son of Shimri, and Joha his brother, the Tizite,
Jediael son of Shimri and his brother Joha the Tizite,
Eliel the Mahavite,
and Jeribai,
and Joshaviah, the sons of Elnaam,
and Ithmah the
Moabite,
Eliel the Mahavite, Jeribai
and Joshaviah, the sons of Elnaam, Ithmah the
Moabite,
Eliel, and Obed, and Jasiel the Mesobaite.
Eliel, Obed, and Jaasiel the Mezobaite.
Now these are they that came to David to
Ziklag, while he yet kept himself close because of Saul the son of
Kish:
and they were among the mighty men, helpers of the war.
Now these were the men who came to David at
Ziklag, while he was still banished from the presence of Saul son of
Kish (they were among the mighty men who helped him in battle;
They were armed with bows,
and could use both the right hand
and the left in
hurling stones
and shooting arrows out of a bow, even of Saul’s brethren of Benjamin.
they were archers using both the right
and left hands to
sling stones
and shoot arrows;
and they were Saul’s
kinsmen from Benjamin):
The chief was Ahiezer, then
Joash, the sons of Shemaah the Gibeathite;
and Jeziel,
and Pelet, the sons of Azmaveth;
and Berachah,
and Jehu the Antothite,
Ahiezer their chief
and Joash, who were the sons of Shemaah the Gibeathite; Jeziel
and Pelet, the sons of Azmaveth; Beracah;
Jehu the Anathothite;
And Ismaiah the Gibeonite, a mighty man among the thirty, and over the thirty; and Jeremiah, and Jahaziel, and Johanan, and Josabad the Gederathite,
Ishmaiah the Gibeonite, a mighty man among the Thirty and a leader over the Thirty; Jeremiah, Jahaziel, Johanan, and Jozabad the Gederathite;
Eluzai, and Jerimoth, and Bealiah, and Shemariah, and Shephatiah the Haruphite,
Eluzai, Jerimoth, Bealiah, Shemariah, and Shephatiah the Haruphite;
Elkanah, and Jesiah, and Azareel, and Joezer, and Jashobeam, the Korhites,
Elkanah, Isshiah, Azarel, Joezer, and Jashobeam, who were Korahites;
And Joelah, and Zebadiah, the sons of Jeroham of Gedor.
and Joelah and Zebadiah, the sons of Jeroham from Gedor.
And of the Gadites there separated themselves unto David into the hold to the wilderness men of might,
and men of war fit for the battle, that could handle shield
and buckler, whose faces were like the faces of lions,
and were as swift as the roes upon the mountains;
Some Gadites defected to David at his
stronghold in the desert. They were mighty men of
valor, trained for battle, experts with the shield
and spear, whose faces were like the faces of lions
and who were as swift as gazelles on the mountains:
Jeremiah the tenth, Machbanai the
eleventh.
Jeremiah the tenth,
and Machbanai the
eleventh.
These were of the sons of
Gad, captains of the host: one of the least was over an hundred,
and the greatest over a thousand.
These Gadites were army commanders, the least of whom was a
match for a hundred,
and the greatest for a thousand.
These are they that went over Jordan in the first month, when it had
overflown all his banks;
and they put to flight all them of the valleys, both toward the east,
and toward the west.
These are the ones who crossed the Jordan in the first month when it was overflowing all its banks, and they put to flight all those in the valleys, both to the east and to the west.
And there came of the children of Benjamin and Judah to the hold unto David.
Other Benjamites
and some men from Judah also came to David in his
stronghold.
And David went out to meet them,
and answered
and said unto them, If ye be come
peaceably unto me to help me, mine heart shall be
knit unto you: but if ye be come to
betray me to mine enemies, seeing there is no wrong in mine hands, the God of our fathers look
thereon,
and rebuke it.
And David went out to meet them, saying, “If you have come to me in peace to help me, my heart will be united with you; but if you have come to
betray me to my enemies when my hands are free of violence, may the God of our fathers see it
and judge you.”
Then the spirit came upon Amasai, who was chief of the captains,
and he said, Thine are we, David,
and on thy side, thou son of
Jesse: peace, peace be unto thee,
and peace be to thine helpers; for thy God helpeth thee. Then David received them,
and made them captains of the band.
Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, the chief of the Thirty,
and he said: “We are yours, O David! We are with you, O son of
Jesse! Peace, peace to you,
and peace to your helpers, for your God helps you.” So David received them
and made them leaders of his troops.
And there fell some of
Manasseh to David, when he came with the Philistines against Saul to battle: but they helped them not: for the lords of the Philistines upon
advisement sent him away, saying, He will fall to his master Saul to the
jeopardy of our heads.
Some from
Manasseh defected to David when he went with the Philistines to fight against Saul. (They did not help the Philistines because the
Philistine rulers consulted
and sent David away, saying, “It will cost us our heads if he defects to his master Saul.”)
As he went to
Ziklag, there fell to him of
Manasseh, Adnah,
and Jozabad,
and Jediael,
and Michael,
and Jozabad,
and Elihu,
and Zilthai, captains of the thousands that were of
Manasseh.
When David went to
Ziklag, these men of
Manasseh defected to him: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad,
Elihu,
and Zillethai, chiefs of thousands in
Manasseh.
And they helped David against the band of the rovers: for they were all mighty men of valour, and were captains in the host.
They helped David against the raiders, for they were all mighty men of
valor and commanders in the army.
And these are the numbers of the bands that were ready armed to the war,
and came to David to
Hebron, to turn the kingdom of Saul to him, according to the word of the LORD.
Now these are the numbers of men armed for battle who came to David at
Hebron to turn Saul’s kingdom over to him, in accordance with the word of the LORD:
The children of Judah that bare shield
and spear were six thousand
and eight hundred, ready armed to the war.
From Judah: 6,800 armed troops bearing shields and spears.
Of the children of
Simeon, mighty men of valour for the war, seven thousand
and one hundred.
From
Simeon: 7,100 mighty men of
valor, ready for battle.
Of the children of Levi four thousand and six hundred.
From Levi: 4,600,
And Jehoiada was the leader of the Aaronites, and with him were three thousand and seven hundred;
including Jehoiada, leader of the house of Aaron, with 3,700 men,
And Zadok, a young man mighty of valour,
and of his father’s house twenty
and two captains.
and Zadok, a mighty young man of
valor, with 22 commanders from his own family.
And of the children of Benjamin, the kindred of Saul, three thousand: for hitherto the greatest part of them had kept the ward of the house of Saul.
From Benjamin, the
kinsmen of Saul: 3,000, most of whom had remained
loyal to the house of Saul up to that time.
And of the children of Ephraim twenty thousand and eight hundred, mighty men of valour, famous throughout the house of their fathers.
From Ephraim: 20,800 mighty men of
valor, famous among their own clans.
And of the half tribe of
Manasseh eighteen thousand, which were expressed by name, to come
and make David king.
From the half-tribe of
Manasseh: 18,000 designated by name to come
and make David king.
And of the children of
Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do; the heads of them were two hundred;
and all their brethren were at their commandment.
From
Issachar, men who understood the times
and knew what Israel should do: 200 chiefs with all their
kinsmen at their command.
And of
Naphtali a thousand captains,
and with them with shield
and spear thirty
and seven thousand.
From
Naphtali: 1,000 commanders, accompanied by 37,000 men with shield
and spear.
And of the Danites
expert in war twenty
and eight thousand
and six hundred.
From
Dan: 28,600 prepared for battle.
And of Asher, such as went forth to battle,
expert in war, forty thousand.
From Asher: 40,000 fit for service, prepared for battle.
And on the other side of Jordan, of the Reubenites,
and the Gadites,
and of the half tribe of
Manasseh, with all manner of instruments of war for the battle, an hundred
and twenty thousand.
And from east of the Jordan, from
Reuben,
Gad,
and the half-tribe of
Manasseh there: 120,000 armed with every kind of weapon of war.
All these men of war, that could keep rank, came with a perfect heart to
Hebron, to make David king over all Israel:
and all the rest also of Israel were of one heart to make David king.
All these men of war,
arrayed for battle, came to
Hebron fully determined to make David king over all Israel.
And all the rest of the Israelites were of one mind to make David king.
And there they were with David three days, eating and drinking: for their brethren had prepared for them.
They spent three days there eating and drinking with David, for their relatives had provided for them.
Moreover they that were
nigh them, even unto
Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, brought bread on
asses,
and on camels,
and on mules,
and on oxen,
and meat, meal, cakes of figs,
and bunches of
raisins,
and wine,
and oil,
and oxen,
and sheep abundantly: for there was joy in Israel.
And their neighbors from as far away as
Issachar,
Zebulun,
and Naphtali came bringing food on
donkeys, camels, mules,
and oxen—abundant supplies of flour, fig cakes
and raisin cakes, wine
and oil, oxen
and sheep. Indeed, there was joy in Israel.
And David consulted with the captains of thousands and hundreds, and with every leader.
Then David conferred with all his leaders, the commanders of hundreds and of thousands.
And David said unto all the congregation of Israel, If it seem good unto you, and that it be of the LORD our God, let us send abroad unto our brethren every where, that are left in all the land of Israel, and with them also to the priests and Levites which are in their cities and suburbs, that they may gather themselves unto us:
And he said to the whole assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you, and if this is of the LORD our God, let us send word far and wide to the rest of our brothers in all the land of Israel, and also to the priests and Levites in their cities and pasturelands, so that they may join us.
And let us bring again the ark of our God to us: for we enquired not at it in the days of Saul.
Then let us bring back the ark of our God, for we did not inquire of Him in the days of Saul.”
And all the congregation said that they would do so: for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.
And because this proposal seemed right to all the people, the whole assembly agreed to it.
And David went up, and all Israel, to Baalah, that is, to Kirjath-jearim, which belonged to Judah, to bring up thence the ark of God the LORD, that dwelleth between the cherubims, whose name is called on it.
David
and all Israel went up to Baalah of Judah (that is, Kiriath-jearim) to bring up from there the ark of God the LORD, who is enthroned between the
cherubim—the ark that is called by the Name.
