And the man, the lord of the country, said unto us,
Hereby shall I know that ye are true men; leave one of your brethren here with me, and take food for the famine of your households, and be gone:
Then the man who is lord of the land said to us, ‘This is how I will know whether you are
honest: Leave one
brother with me, take food to
relieve the hunger of your households, and go.
And bring your youngest
brother unto me: then shall I know that ye are no
spies, but that ye are true men: so will I deliver you your
brother, and ye shall
traffick in the land.
But bring your youngest
brother back to me so I will know that you are not
spies but
honest men. Then I will give your
brother back to you, and you can trade in the land.’”

brother is with you.’
If thou
wilt send our
brother with us, we will go down and
buy thee food:
If you will send our
brother with us, we will go down and
buy food for you.
But if thou
wilt not send him, we will not go down: for the man said unto us, Ye shall not see my face, except your
brother be with you.

brother down?
They replied, “The man questioned us in detail about ourselves and our family: ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?’ And we answered him accordingly. How could we possibly know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother here’?”

brother along with Benjamin. As for me, if I am
bereaved, I am
bereaved.”

brothers and to his father’s household, “I will go up and inform Pharaoh: ‘My
brothers and my father’s household from the land of
Canaan have come to me.

Any children born to you after them shall be yours, and they shall be called by the names of their
brothers in the territory they
inherit.
And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations.

The blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors unto the utmost bound of the
everlasting hills: they shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren.
The blessings of your father have surpassed the blessings of the ancient mountains and the
bounty of the
everlasting hills. May they rest on the head of Joseph, on the
brow of the prince of his
brothers.

grudge? Then he will surely repay us for all the evil that we did to him.”
So shall ye say unto Joseph,
Forgive, I pray thee now, the
trespass of thy brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee,
forgive the
trespass of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph
wept when they spake unto him.
‘This is what you are to say to Joseph: I
beg you, please
forgive the
transgression and sin of your
brothers, for they did you wrong.’ So now, Joseph, please

And the anger of the LORD was
kindled against Moses, and he said, Is not Aaron the
Levite thy
brother? I know that he can speak well. And also, behold, he cometh forth to meet thee: and when he
seeth thee, he will be
glad in his heart.

Levite your
brother? I know that he can speak well, and he is now on his way to meet you. When he sees you, he will be
glad in his heart.

And the LORD said unto Moses, See, I have made thee a god to Pharaoh: and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet.
The LORD answered Moses, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet.
Thou shalt speak all that I command thee: and Aaron thy brother shall speak unto Pharaoh, that he send the children of Israel out of his land.
You are to speak all that I command you, and your brother Aaron is to tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites go out of his land.
And take thou unto thee Aaron thy
brother, and his sons with him, from among the children of Israel, that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office, even Aaron,
Nadab and
Abihu,
Eleazar and
Ithamar, Aaron’s sons.
“Next, have your
brother Aaron brought to you from among the Israelites, along with his sons
Nadab,
Abihu,
Eleazar, and
Ithamar, to serve Me as priests.
And thou shalt make holy garments for Aaron thy brother for glory and for beauty.
Make holy garments for your
brother Aaron, to give him glory and
splendor.
And these are the garments which they shall make; a
breastplate, and an
ephod, and a
robe, and a
broidered coat, a
mitre, and a
girdle: and they shall make holy garments for Aaron thy
brother, and his sons, that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office.
These are the garments that they shall make: a breastpiece, an
ephod, a
robe, a
woven tunic, a
turban, and a
sash. They are to make these holy garments for your
brother Aaron and his sons, so that they may serve Me as priests.
And thou shalt put them upon Aaron thy
brother, and his sons with him; and shalt
anoint them, and
consecrate them, and
sanctify them, that they may minister unto me in the priest’s office.
After you put these garments on your
brother Aaron and his sons,
anoint them,
ordain them, and
consecrate them so that they may serve Me as priests.
And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and
slay every man his
brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour.

fasten his sword to his side, go back and forth through the camp from gate to gate, and
slay his
brother, his friend, and his
neighbor.’”
For Moses had said,
Consecrate yourselves to day to the LORD, even every man upon his son, and upon his
brother; that he may
bestow upon you a blessing this day.

Today you have been ordained for service to the LORD, since each man went against his son and his
brother; so the LORD has bestowed a blessing on you this day.”
And Moses said unto Aaron, and unto
Eleazar and unto
Ithamar, his sons, Uncover not your heads, neither
rend your clothes; lest ye die, and lest wrath come upon all the people: but let your brethren, the whole house of Israel,
bewail the burning which the LORD hath
kindled.
Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons
Eleazar and
Ithamar, “Do not let your hair become
disheveled and do not
tear your garments, or else you will die, and the LORD will be
angry with the whole congregation. But your
brothers, the whole house of Israel, may
mourn on account of the fire that the LORD has
ignited.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy
brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the
vail before the mercy seat, which is upon the ark; that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat.
And the LORD said to Moses: “Tell your
brother Aaron not to enter freely into the Most Holy Place behind the
veil in front of the mercy seat on the ark, or else he will die, because I appear in the cloud above the mercy seat.
Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father’s
brother, thou shalt not approach to his wife: she is thine
aunt.
You must not dishonor your father’s
brother by approaching his wife to have sexual relations with her; she is your
aunt.
Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy brother’s wife: it is thy brother’s nakedness.
You must not have sexual relations with your brother’s wife; that would shame your brother.
Thou shalt not
hate thy
brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise
rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him.
You must not
harbor hatred against your
brother in your heart. Directly
rebuke your
neighbor, so that you will not
incur guilt on account of him.
And if a man shall take his brother’s wife, it is an unclean thing: he hath uncovered his brother’s nakedness; they shall be childless.
If a man marries his brother’s wife, it is an act of impurity. He has uncovered the nakedness of his brother; they shall be childless.
But for his
kin, that is near unto him, that is, for his mother, and for his father, and for his son, and for his daughter, and for his
brother,
except for his immediate family—his mother, father, son, daughter, or brother,
And he that is the high priest among his brethren, upon whose head the
anointing oil was poured, and that is consecrated to put on the garments, shall not uncover his head, nor
rend his clothes;
The priest who is highest among his
brothers, who has had the
anointing oil poured on his head and has been ordained to wear the priestly garments, must not let his hair
hang loose or
tear his garments.
If thy
brother be
waxen poor, and hath sold away some of his possession, and if any of his
kin come to
redeem it, then shall he
redeem that which his
brother sold.
If your
brother becomes
impoverished and sells some of his property, his nearest of
kin may come and
redeem what his
brother has sold.
And if thy
brother be
waxen poor, and fallen in decay with thee; then thou shalt
relieve him:
yea, though he be a stranger, or a
sojourner; that he may live with thee.
Now if your
countryman becomes destitute and cannot support himself among you, then you are to help him as you would a foreigner or stranger, so that he can continue to live among you.
Take thou no
usury of him, or increase: but fear thy God; that thy
brother may live with thee.
Do not take any interest or profit from him, but fear your God, that your
countryman may live among you.
And if thy
brother that dwelleth by thee be
waxen poor, and be sold unto thee; thou shalt not
compel him to serve as a
bondservant:
If a
countryman among you becomes destitute and sells himself to you, then you must not force him into slave labor.
And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to
inherit them for a possession; they shall be your
bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel, ye shall not rule one over another with rigour.
You may leave them to your sons after you to
inherit as property; you can make them slaves for life. But as for your
brothers, the Israelites, no man may rule harshly over his
brother.
And if a
sojourner or stranger wax rich by thee, and thy
brother that dwelleth by him wax poor, and sell himself unto the stranger or
sojourner by thee, or to the stock of the stranger’s family:
If a foreigner residing among you prospers, but your
countryman dwelling near him becomes destitute and sells himself to the foreigner or to a member of his clan,
After that he is sold he may be redeemed again; one of his brethren may
redeem him:
he retains the right of
redemption after he has sold himself. One of his
brothers may
redeem him:
He shall not make himself unclean for his father, or for his mother, for his
brother, or for his sister, when they die: because the
consecration of his God is upon his head.
Even if his father or mother or
brother or sister should die, he is not to
defile himself, because the crown of
consecration to his God is upon his head.
But shall minister with their brethren in the tabernacle of the congregation, to keep the charge, and shall do no service. Thus shalt thou do unto the Levites touching their charge.
After that, they may assist their
brothers in
fulfilling their duties at the Tent of Meeting, but they themselves are not to do the work. This is how you are to
assign responsibilities to the Levites.”
And thy brethren also of the tribe of Levi, the tribe of thy father, bring thou with thee, that they may be joined unto thee, and minister unto thee: but thou and thy sons with thee shall minister before the tabernacle of witness.
But bring with you also your brothers from the tribe of Levi, the tribe of your father, that they may join you and assist you and your sons before the Tent of the Testimony.
And the people
chode with Moses, and spake, saying, Would God that we had died when our brethren died before the LORD!
The people quarreled with Moses and said, “If only we had perished with our brothers before the LORD!
Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.
“Take the staff and
assemble the congregation. You and your
brother Aaron are to speak to the rock while they watch, and it will pour out its water. You will bring out water from the rock and provide drink for the congregation and their
livestock.”
And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of
Edom, Thus saith thy
brother Israel, Thou knowest all the
travail that hath
befallen us:
From Kadesh, Moses sent messengers to tell the king of
Edom, “This is what your
brother Israel says: You know all the
hardship that has
befallen us,
Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he hath no son? Give unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father.
Why should the name of our father disappear from his clan because he had no sons? Give us property among our father’s brothers.”
The daughters of Zelophehad speak right: thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father’s brethren; and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them.
“The daughters of Zelophehad speak correctly. You certainly must give them property as an inheritance among their father’s brothers, and transfer their father’s inheritance to them.
And if he have no daughter, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his brethren.
If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers.
And if he have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his father’s brethren.
If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers.
And if his father have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his
kinsman that is next to him of his family, and he shall possess it: and it shall be unto the children of Israel a statute of judgment, as the LORD commanded Moses.
And if his father has no
brothers, give his inheritance to the next of
kin from his clan, that he may take possession of it. This is to be a
statutory ordinance for the Israelites, as the LORD has commanded Moses.’”
And when thou hast seen it, thou also shalt be gathered unto thy people, as Aaron thy brother was gathered.
After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was;
And Moses said unto the children of
Gad and to the children of
Reuben, Shall your brethren go to war, and shall ye sit here?
But Moses asked the Gadites and Reubenites, “Shall your brothers go to war while you sit here?
And they said, The LORD commanded my lord to give the land for an inheritance by lot to the children of Israel: and my lord was commanded by the LORD to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother unto his daughters.
saying, “When the LORD commanded my lord to give the land as an inheritance to the Israelites by lot, He also commanded him to give the inheritance of our brother Zelophehad to his daughters.
For Mahlah, Tirzah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and
Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married unto their father’s
brothers’ sons:
Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and
Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married to cousins on their father’s side.
And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him.
At that time I charged your judges: “Hear the disputes between your brothers, and judge fairly between a man and his brother or a foreign resident.
Whither shall we go up? our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying, The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there.
Where can we go? Our
brothers have made our hearts
melt, saying: ‘The people are larger and taller than we are; the cities are large, with walls up to the heavens. We even saw the descendants of the
Anakim there.’”
And command thou the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the coast of your brethren the children of
Esau, which dwell in
Seir; and they shall be afraid of you: take ye good
heed unto
yourselves therefore:
and command the people: ‘You will pass through the territory of your
brothers, the descendants of
Esau, who live in
Seir. They will be afraid of you, so you must be very careful.
And when we passed by from our brethren the children of
Esau, which dwelt in
Seir, through the way of the plain from
Elath, and from Ezion-gaber, we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.
So we passed by our
brothers, the descendants of
Esau, who live in
Seir. We turned away from the Arabah road, which comes up from
Elath and Ezion-
geber, and traveled along the road of the Wilderness of Moab.
And I commanded you at that time, saying, The LORD your God hath given you this land to possess it: ye shall pass over armed before your brethren the children of Israel, all that are meet for the war.
At that time I commanded you: “The LORD your God has given you this land to possess. All your men of
valor are to cross over, armed for battle,
ahead of your
brothers, the Israelites.
