And Moses
called unto Joshua, and said unto him in the sight of all Israel, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou must go with this people unto the land which the LORD hath
sworn unto their fathers to give them; and thou shalt cause them to
inherit it.
Then Moses
called for Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and
courageous, for you will go with this people into the land that the LORD
swore to their fathers to give them, and you shall give it to them as an inheritance.

call Joshua, and present
yourselves in the tabernacle of the congregation, that I may give him a charge. And Moses and Joshua went, and presented themselves in the tabernacle of the congregation.

Call Joshua and present
yourselves at the Tent of Meeting, so that I may commission him.” So Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves at the Tent of Meeting.
Gather unto me all the elders of your tribes, and your officers, that I may speak these words in their ears, and call heaven and earth to record against them.
Assemble before me all the elders of your tribes and all your officers so that I may speak these words in their hearing and
call heaven and earth to witness against them.
To me belongeth
vengeance, and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their
calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make
haste.
Vengeance is Mine; I will repay. In due time their foot will slip; for their day of
disaster is near, and their
doom is coming quickly.”
They shall
call the people unto the mountain; there they shall offer sacrifices of righteousness: for they shall
suck of the abundance of the seas, and of treasures
hid in the sand.
They will call the peoples to a mountain; there they will offer sacrifices of righteousness. For they will feast on the abundance of the seas and the hidden treasures of the sand.”

And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is
called Gilgal unto this day.

called Gilgal to this day.
And Joshua the son of
Nun called the priests, and said unto them, Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven
trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of the LORD.
So Joshua son of
Nun summoned the priests and said, “Take up the ark of the covenant and have seven priests carry seven rams’ horns in front of the ark of the LORD.”
And they raised over him a great
heap of stones unto this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was
called, The valley of
Achor, unto this day.
And they
heaped over
Achan a large pile of rocks that remains to this day. So the LORD turned from His burning anger. Therefore that place is
called the Valley of
Achor to this day.

called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.
Then all the men of
Ai were summoned to pursue them, and they followed Joshua and were drawn away from the city.
And Joshua
called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye
beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?

And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.
When they had brought the kings to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had accompanied him, “Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings.” So the commanders came forward and put their feet on their necks.
Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in
Gilgal: and
Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto him, Thou knowest the thing that the LORD said unto Moses the man of God concerning me and thee in Kadesh-barnea.

Gilgal, and
Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the LORD said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh-barnea about you and me.
And Joshua blessed him, and gave unto
Caleb the son of Jephunneh
Hebron for an inheritance.
Then Joshua blessed
Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him
Hebron as his inheritance.
Hebron therefore became the inheritance of
Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite unto this day, because that he wholly followed the LORD God of Israel.
Therefore
Hebron belongs to
Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite as an inheritance to this day, because he wholly followed the LORD, the God of Israel.
And the name of
Hebron before was Kirjath-arba; which Arba was a great man among the Anakims. And the land had rest from war.
(
Hebron used to be
called Kiriath-arba, after Arba, the greatest man among the
Anakim.) Then the land had rest from war.
And unto
Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a part among the children of Judah, according to the commandment of the LORD to Joshua, even the city of Arba the father of
Anak, which city is
Hebron.
According to the LORD’s command to him, Joshua gave
Caleb son of Jephunneh a portion among the sons of Judah—Kiriath-arba, that is,
Hebron. (Arba was the
forefather of
Anak.)
And
Caleb drove thence the three sons of
Anak, Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of
Anak.
And
Caleb drove out from there the three sons of
Anak—the descendants of Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of
Anak.
And
Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.
And
Caleb said, “To the man who strikes down Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will give my daughter Acsah in marriage.”
And Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of
Caleb, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.
So Othniel son of
Caleb’s brother Kenaz captured the city, and
Caleb gave his daughter Acsah to him in marriage.
And it came to pass, as she came unto him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted off her
ass; and
Caleb said unto her, What wouldest thou?
One day Acsah came to Othniel and urged him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her
donkey,
Caleb asked her, “What do you desire?”
Who answered, Give me a blessing; for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And he gave her the upper springs, and the
nether springs.
“Give me a blessing,” she answered. “Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me springs of water as well.” So
Caleb gave her both the upper and lower springs.
And the coast of the children of
Dan went out too little for them: therefore the children of
Dan went up to fight against Leshem, and took it, and
smote it with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and dwelt therein, and
called Leshem,
Dan, after the name of
Dan their father.
(Later, when the territory of the Danites was lost to them, they went up and fought against Leshem, captured it, and put it to the sword. So they took possession of Leshem, settled there, and renamed it after their father
Dan.)
But the fields of the city, and the villages thereof, gave they to
Caleb the son of Jephunneh for his possession.
But they had given the fields and villages around the city to
Caleb son of Jephunneh as his possession.
Then Joshua
called the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of
Manasseh,
Then Joshua summoned the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh And the children of

So the Reubenites and Gadites named the altar Witness, for they said, “It is a witness between us that the LORD is God.”
And Joshua
called for all Israel, and for their elders, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers, and said unto them, I am old and
stricken in age:
he summoned all Israel, including its elders, leaders, judges, and officers. “I am old and well along in years,” he said,
That ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the names of their gods, nor cause to
swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow
yourselves unto them:
So you are not to associate with these nations that remain among you. You must not
call on the names of their gods or
swear by them, and you must not serve them or bow down to them.
Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.
But just as every good thing the LORD your God promised you has come to pass, likewise the LORD will bring upon you the
calamity He has threatened, until He has destroyed you from this good land He has given you.
And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to
Shechem, and
called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God.

Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and

curse you:
Then Balak son of Zippor, the king of Moab, set out to fight against Israel. He sent for
Balaam son of Beor to
curse you,
And
Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.
And
Caleb said, “To the man who strikes down Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will give my daughter Acsah in marriage.”
And Othniel the son of Kenaz,
Caleb’s younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.
So Othniel son of
Caleb’s younger brother Kenaz captured the city, and
Caleb gave his daughter Acsah to him in marriage.
And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her
ass; and
Caleb said unto her, What
wilt thou?
One day Acsah came to Othniel and urged him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her
donkey,
Caleb asked her, “What do you desire?”
And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And
Caleb gave her the upper springs and the
nether springs.
“Give me a blessing,” she answered. “Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me springs of water as well.” So
Caleb gave her both the upper and lower springs.
And Judah went with
Simeon his brother, and they
slew the
Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was
called Hormah.
Then the men of Judah went with their brothers the Simeonites, attacked the
Canaanites living in Zephath, and devoted the city to destruction. So it was
called Hormah.
And they gave
Hebron unto
Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of
Anak.
Just as Moses had promised, Judah gave
Hebron to
Caleb, who drove out the descendants of the three sons of
Anak.
And the man went into the land of the
Hittites, and built a city, and
called the name thereof
Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day.
And the man went to the land of the
Hittites, built a city, and
called it
Luz, which is its name to this day.
And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto the LORD.
So they called that place Bochim and offered sacrifices there to the LORD.
Whithersoever they went out, the hand of the LORD was against them for evil, as the LORD had said, and as the LORD had
sworn unto them: and they were greatly distressed.
Wherever Israel marched out, the hand of the LORD was against them to bring
calamity, just as He had
sworn to them. So they were greatly distressed.
And when the children of Israel
cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz,
Caleb’s younger brother.
But when the Israelites
cried out to the LORD, He raised up Othniel son of
Caleb’s younger brother Kenaz as a deliverer to save them.
And she sent and
called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedesh-
naphtali, and said unto him, Hath not the LORD God of Israel commanded, saying, Go and draw toward mount
Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of
Naphtali and of the children of
Zebulun?
She summoned
Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in
Naphtali and said to him, “Surely the LORD, the God of Israel, is commanding you: ‘Go and march to Mount
Tabor, taking with you ten thousand men of
Naphtali and
Zebulun.
Then
Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and
called it Jehovah-shalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abi-ezrites.
So
Gideon built an altar to the LORD there and
called it The LORD Is Peace. To this day it stands in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
Therefore on that day he
called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let
Baal plead against him, because he hath thrown down his altar.
So on that day
Gideon was
called Jerubbaal, that is to say, “Let
Baal contend with him,” because he had
torn down
Baal’s altar.
And he sent messengers throughout all
Manasseh; who also was gathered after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto
Zebulun, and unto
Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.
And the men of Israel gathered themselves together out of
Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all
Manasseh, and pursued after the Midianites.
Then the men of Israel were
called out from
Naphtali, Asher, and all
Manasseh, and they pursued the Midianites.
And
Gideon sent messengers throughout all mount Ephraim, saying, Come down against the Midianites, and take before them the waters unto Beth-barah and Jordan. Then all the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and took the waters unto Beth-barah and Jordan.
Gideon sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim to say, “Come down against the Midianites and seize the waters of the Jordan
ahead of them as far as Beth-barah.” So all the men of Ephraim were
called out, and they captured the waters of the Jordan as far as Beth-barah.
And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou
calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? And they did
chide with him sharply.
Then the men of Ephraim said to
Gideon, “Why have you done this to us? Why did you fail to
call us when you went to fight against
Midian?” And they
contended with him violently.
Then he
called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and
slay me, that men say not of me, A woman
slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.
He quickly
called his
armor-bearer, saying, “Draw your sword and kill me, lest they say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’” So
Abimelech’s
armor-bearer ran his sword through him, and he died.
And he had thirty sons that
rode on thirty
ass colts, and they had thirty cities, which are
called Havoth-
jair unto this day, which are in the land of
Gilead.
He had thirty sons who
rode on thirty
donkeys. And they had thirty towns in the land of
Gilead, which to this day are
called Havvoth-
jair.
Then the children of
Ammon were gathered together, and
encamped in
Gilead. And the children of Israel assembled themselves together, and
encamped in Mizpeh.
Then the
Ammonites were
called to arms and camped in
Gilead, and the Israelites assembled and camped at
Mizpah.
And the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and went northward, and said unto
Jephthah, Wherefore passedst thou over to fight against the children of
Ammon, and
didst not
call us to go with thee? we will burn thine house upon thee with fire.
Then the men of Ephraim assembled and crossed the Jordan to Zaphon. They said to
Jephthah, “Why have you crossed over to fight the
Ammonites without
calling us to go with you? We will burn your house down with you inside!”
And
Jephthah said unto them, I and my people were at great
strife with the children of
Ammon; and when I
called you, ye delivered me not out of their hands.
But
Jephthah replied, “My people and I had a serious conflict with the
Ammonites, and when I
called, you did not save me out of their hands.
And the woman bare a son, and
called his name
Samson: and the child grew, and the LORD blessed him.
So the woman gave birth to a son and named him
Samson. The boy grew, and the LORD blessed him.
And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they said unto
Samson’s wife,
Entice thy husband, that he may declare unto us the
riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father’s house with fire: have ye
called us to take that we have? is it not so?
So on the fourth day they said to
Samson’s wife, “
Entice your husband to explain the
riddle to us, or we will burn you and your father’s household to death. Did you
invite us here to
rob us?”
And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking, that he cast away the
jawbone out of his hand, and
called that place Ramath-lehi.
And when
Samson had finished speaking, he cast the
jawbone from his hand; and he named that place Ramath-lehi.
But God
clave an hollow place that was in the jaw, and there came water
thereout; and when he had
drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived: wherefore he
called the name thereof En-hakkore, which is in Lehi unto this day.
So God opened up the hollow place in Lehi, and water came out of it. When
Samson drank, his strength returned, and he was revived. That is why he named it En-hakkore, and it remains in Lehi to this day.
Now there were men lying in wait,
abiding with her in the chamber. And she said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And he
brake the withs, as a thread of
tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. So his strength was not known.
While the men were hidden in her room, she
called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” But he
snapped the bowstrings like a
strand of yarn
seared by a flame. So the source of his strength remained unknown.
Delilah therefore took new ropes, and bound him
therewith, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And there were liers in wait
abiding in the chamber. And he
brake them from off his arms like a thread.
So
Delilah took new ropes,
tied him up with them, and
called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” But while the men were hidden in her room, he
snapped the ropes off his arms like they were threads.
And she fastened it with the pin, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And he
awaked out of his sleep, and went away with the pin of the beam, and with the web.
So while he
slept,
Delilah took the seven braids of his hair and
wove them into the web. Then she
tightened it with a pin and
called to him, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” But he
awoke from his sleep and pulled out the pin with the
loom and the web.
And when
Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and
called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath shewed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand.
When
Delilah realized that he had revealed to her all that was in his heart, she sent this message to the lords of the Philistines: “Come up once more, for he has revealed to me all that is in his heart.” Then the lords of the Philistines came to her, bringing the money in their hands.
And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she
called for a man, and she caused him to
shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to
afflict him, and his strength went from him.
And having
lulled him to sleep on her
lap, she
called a man to
shave off the seven braids of his head. In this way she began to
subdue him, and his strength left him.
And she said, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And he
awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and
shake myself. And he
wist not that the LORD was departed from him.
Then she
called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” When
Samson awoke from his sleep, he thought, “I will escape as I did before and
shake myself free.” But he did not know that the LORD had departed from him.
And it came to pass, when their hearts were
merry, that they said,
Call for
Samson, that he may make us
sport. And they
called for
Samson out of the prison house; and he made them
sport: and they set him between the pillars.
And while their hearts were
merry, they said, “
Call for
Samson to
entertain us.” So they
called Samson out of the prison to
entertain them. And they stationed him between the pillars.
And
Samson called unto the LORD, and said, O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray thee, and
strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once
avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.
Then
Samson called out to the LORD: “O Lord GOD, please remember me.
Strengthen me, O God, just once more, so that with one
vengeful blow I may pay back the Philistines for my two eyes.”
And they went up, and pitched in Kirjath-jearim, in Judah: wherefore they
called that place Mahaneh-
dan unto this day: behold, it is behind Kirjath-jearim.
They went up and camped at Kiriath-jearim in Judah. That is why the place west of Kiriath-jearim is
called Mahaneh-
dan to this day.
And they
cried unto the children of
Dan. And they turned their faces, and said unto
Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company?
When they
called out after them, the Danites turned to face them and said to
Micah, “What is the matter with you that you have
called out such a company?”
And they
called the name of the city
Dan, after the name of
Dan their father, who was born unto Israel:
howbeit the name of the city was Laish at the first.
They named it
Dan, after their
forefather Dan, who was born to Israel—though the city was formerly named Laish.
And the whole congregation sent some to speak to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock
Rimmon, and to
call peaceably unto them.
Then the whole congregation sent a message of peace to the Benjamites who were at the rock of
Rimmon.
And she said unto them,
Call me not
Naomi,
call me
Mara: for the
Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me.
“Do not
call me
Naomi,” she replied. “
Call me
Mara, because the
Almighty has dealt quite bitterly with me.
I went out full, and the LORD hath brought me home again empty: why then
call ye me
Naomi, seeing the LORD hath
testified against me, and the
Almighty hath
afflicted me?
I went away full, but the LORD has brought me back empty. Why
call me
Naomi? After all, the LORD has
testified against me, and the
Almighty has
afflicted me.”
And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to
Naomi; and they
called his name Obed: he is the father of
Jesse, the father of David.
The
neighbor women said, “A son has been born to
Naomi,” and they named him Obed. He became the father of
Jesse, the father of David.
Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after
Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and
called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.
So in the course of time,
Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked for him from the LORD.”
And he struck it into the pan, or
kettle, or
caldron, or pot; all that the
fleshhook brought up the priest took for himself. So they did in
Shiloh unto all the Israelites that came thither.
and
plunge it into the pan or
kettle or cauldron or
cooking pot. And the priest would claim for himself whatever the meat
fork brought up. This is how they treated all the Israelites who came to
Shiloh.
That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I.
Then the LORD called to Samuel, and he answered, “Here I am.”
And he ran unto
Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou
calledst me. And he said, I
called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down.
He ran to
Eli and said, “Here I am, for you have
called me.” “I did not
call,”
Eli replied. “Go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down.
And the LORD
called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to
Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou
didst call me. And he answered, I
called not, my son; lie down again.
Once again the LORD
called, “Samuel!” So Samuel got up, went to
Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you have
called me.” “My son, I did not
call,”
Eli replied. “Go back and lie down.”
And the LORD
called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to
Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou
didst call me. And
Eli perceived that the LORD had
called the child.
Once again, for the third time, the LORD
called to Samuel. He got up, went to
Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you have
called me.” Then
Eli realized that it was the LORD who was
calling the boy.
Therefore
Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he
call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
“Go and lie down,” he said to Samuel, “and if He
calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for Your servant is
listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.
Then the LORD came and stood there,
calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel answered, “Speak, for Your servant is
listening.”
Then
Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am I.
but
Eli called to him and said, “Samuel, my son.” “Here I am,” answered Samuel.
They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto
Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither.
So they
called together all the rulers of the Philistines and asked, “What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?” “It must be moved to
Gath,” they replied. So they carried away the ark of the God of Israel.
And the Philistines
called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of the LORD? tell us
wherewith we shall send it to his place.
the Philistines summoned the priests and diviners, saying, “What shall we do with the ark of the LORD? Tell us how to send it back to its place.”
Now therefore make a new
cart, and take two
milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and
tie the
kine to the
cart, and bring their
calves home from them:
Now, therefore, prepare one new
cart with two milk cows that have never been yoked.
Hitch the cows to the
cart, but take their
calves away and pen them up.
Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Eben-ezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.
Afterward, Samuel took a stone and set it up between
Mizpah and Shen. He named it
Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the LORD has helped us.”
(Formerly in Israel, a man on his way to inquire of God would say, “Come, let us go to the
seer.” For the prophet of
today was formerly
called the
seer.)
And they arose early: and it came to pass about the spring of the day, that Samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying, Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad.
They got up early in the morning, and just before
dawn Samuel
called to Saul on the roof, “Get ready, and I will send you on your way!” So Saul arose, and both he and Samuel went outside together.
And Samuel called the people together unto the LORD to Mizpeh;
After this, Samuel summoned the people to the LORD at
Mizpah Is it not wheat harvest to day? I will
call unto the LORD, and he shall send
thunder and rain; that ye may perceive and see that your wickedness is great, which ye have done in the sight of the LORD, in asking you a king.
Is it not the wheat harvest
today? I will
call on the LORD to send
thunder and rain, so that you will know and see what a great evil you have committed in the sight of the LORD by asking for a king.”
So Samuel
called unto the LORD; and the LORD sent
thunder and rain that day: and all the people greatly feared the LORD and Samuel.
So Samuel
called to the LORD, and on that day the LORD sent
thunder and rain. As a result, all the people greatly feared the LORD and Samuel.
And all Israel heard say that Saul had
smitten a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel also was had in
abomination with the Philistines. And the people were
called together after Saul to
Gilgal.
And all Israel heard the news: “Saul has attacked an outpost of the Philistines, and now Israel has become a
stench to the Philistines!” Then the people were summoned to join Saul at
Gilgal.
And the men of the garrison answered
Jonathan and his armourbearer, and said, Come up to us, and we will
shew you a thing. And
Jonathan said unto his armourbearer, Come up after me: for the LORD hath delivered them into the hand of Israel.
So the men of the outpost
called out to
Jonathan and his
armor-bearer, “Come on up, and we will teach you a
lesson!” “Follow me,”
Jonathan told his
armor-bearer, “for the LORD has delivered them into the hand of Israel.”
Then said Saul unto the people that were with him, Number now, and see who is gone from us. And when they had numbered, behold,
Jonathan and his armourbearer were not there.
Saul said to the troops who were with him, “
Call the roll and see who has left us.” And when they had
called the roll, they saw that
Jonathan and his
armor-bearer were not there.
And the people
flew upon the
spoil, and took sheep, and oxen, and
calves, and
slew them on the ground: and the people did eat them with the blood.
So they
rushed greedily to the
plunder, taking sheep, cattle, and
calves. They slaughtered them on the ground and
ate meat with the blood still in it.
But Saul and the people
spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was
vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.
Saul and his troops
spared Agag, along with the best of the sheep and cattle, the fat
calves and lambs, and the best of everything else. They were unwilling to destroy them, but they devoted to destruction all that was
despised and worthless.
And
call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will
shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt
anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.
Then
invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you are to do. You are to
anoint for Me the one I indicate.”
