For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:
For this cause left I thee in
Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and
ordain elders in every
city, as I had appointed thee:
The reason I left you in
Crete was that you would set in order what was unfinished and
appoint elders in every town, as I directed you.
For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.
But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not
ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a
city.
Instead, they were longing for a better country, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not
ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a
city for them.
But ye are come unto mount
Sion, and unto the
city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
Instead, you have come to Mount
Zion, to the
city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to myriads of angels
Wherefore Jesus also, that he might
sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.
And so Jesus also suffered outside the
city gate, to
sanctify the people by His own blood.
For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.
For here we do not have a permanent city, but we are looking for the city that is to come.
Go to now, ye that say, To day or to
morrow we will go into such a
city, and continue there a year, and
buy and sell, and get gain:
Come now, you who say, “
Today or
tomorrow we will go to this or that
city,
spend a year there, carry on business, and make a profit.”
And turning the
cities of
Sodom and
Gomorrah into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an
ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;
if He condemned the
cities of
Sodom and
Gomorrah to destruction, reducing them to ashes as an example of what is coming on the ungodly;
Even as
Sodom and Gomorrha, and the
cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to
fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the
vengeance of eternal fire.
In like manner,
Sodom and
Gomorrah and the
cities around them, who
indulged in sexual immorality and pursued strange flesh, are on display as an example of those who
sustain the punishment of eternal fire.
Him that overcometh will I make a
pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the
city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.
The one who overcomes I will make a
pillar in the temple of My God, and he will never again leave it. Upon him I will write the name of My God, and the name of the
city of My God (the new Jerusalem that comes down out of heaven from My God), and My new name.
But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy
city shall they
tread under foot forty and two months.
But
exclude the
courtyard outside the temple. Do not measure it, because it has been given over to the nations, and they will
trample the holy
city for 42 months.
And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great
city, which spiritually is called
Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was
crucified.
And the same hour was there a great
earthquake, and the tenth part of the
city fell, and in the
earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the
remnant were
affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.
And in that hour there was a great
earthquake, and a tenth of the
city collapsed. Seven thousand were killed in the
quake, and the rest were
terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.
And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great
city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her
fornication.
Then a second angel followed, saying, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great, who has made all the nations drink the wine of the passion of her immorality.”
And the winepress was
trodden without the
city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.
And the winepress was
trodden outside the
city, and the blood that flowed from it rose as high as the bridles of the horses for a distance of 1,600
stadia.
And the great
city was divided into three parts, and the
cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in
remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.
The great
city was split into three parts, and the
cities of the nations
collapsed. And God remembered Babylon the great and gave her the cup of the wine of the
fury of His wrath.
And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.
And the woman you saw is the great city that rules over the kings of the earth.”
Standing
afar off for the fear of her
torment, saying,
Alas,
alas, that great
city Babylon, that mighty
city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
In fear of her
torment, they will stand at a distance and cry out: “
Woe,
woe to the great
city, the mighty
city of Babylon! For in a single hour your judgment has come.”
The
merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble,
cargo of gold, silver, precious stones, and pearls; of fine linen, purple, silk, and scarlet; of all kinds of
citron wood and every article of ivory, precious wood, bronze, iron, and marble;
And saying,
Alas,
alas, that great
city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls!
saying: “
Woe,
woe to the great
city, clothed in fine linen and purple and scarlet, adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls!
And
cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What
city is like unto this great
city!
and cry out at the sight of the smoke rising from the fire that consumes her. “What
city was ever like this great
city?” they will
exclaim.
Then they will throw dust on their heads as they
weep and
mourn and cry out: “
Woe,
woe to the great
city, where all who had ships on the sea were enriched by her wealth! For in a single hour she has been destroyed.”
And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great
millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great
city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.
Then a mighty angel
picked up a stone the size of a great
millstone and cast it into the sea, saying: “With such violence the great
city of Babylon will be cast down, never to be seen again.
And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved
city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and
devoured them.
And they marched across the broad
expanse of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved
city. But fire came down from heaven and consumed them.
And I John saw the holy
city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a
bride adorned for her husband.
I saw the holy
city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a
bride adorned for her husband.
And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the holy city of Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God,
And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written
thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:
The city had a great and high wall with twelve gates inscribed with the names of the twelve tribes of Israel, and twelve angels at the gates.
And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
The wall of the city had twelve foundations bearing the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof.
The angel who spoke with me had a golden measuring rod to measure the city and its gates and walls.
And the
city lieth
foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the
city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.
The
city lies
foursquare, with its width the same as its length. And he measured the
city with the rod, and all its dimensions were equal—12,000
stadia in length and width and height.
And the building of the wall of it was of
jasper: and the
city was pure gold, like unto clear glass.
The wall was made of
jasper, and the
city itself of pure gold, as pure as glass.
The foundations of the
city walls were adorned with every kind of precious stone: The first foundation was
jasper, the second
sapphire, the third
chalcedony, the fourth
emerald,
And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one
pearl: and the street of the
city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.
And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, with each gate consisting of a single
pearl. The main street of the
city was pure gold, as clear as glass.
And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God
Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.
But I saw no temple in the
city, because the Lord God
Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.
And the
city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to
shine in it: for the glory of God did
lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
And the
city has no need of sun or moon to
shine on it, because the glory of God illuminates the
city, and the Lamb is its lamp.
And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.
And into the city will be brought the glory and honor of the nations.
In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the
healing of the nations.
down the middle of the main street of the
city. On either side of the river stood a tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit and yielding a fresh crop for each month. And the leaves of the tree are for the
healing of the nations.
And there shall be no more
curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:
No longer will there be any
curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be within the
city, and His servants will worship Him.
And there shall be no night there; and they need no
candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
There will be no more night in the
city, and they will have no need for the light of a lamp or of the sun. For the Lord God will
shine on them, and they will reign
forever and ever.
Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and may enter the city by its gates.
And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
And if
anyone takes away from the words of this book of prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and the holy
city, which are described in this book.
Be it now known to the lord king, that the Jews that are up from you to us, being come into Jerusalem, that
rebellious and wicked
city, do build the marketplaces, and repair the walls of it and do lay the foundation of the temple.
Now if this
city and the walls thereof be made up again, they will not only refuse to give tribute, but also
rebel against kings.
And thou shalt find in the chronicles what is written concerning these things, and shalt understand that that
city was
rebellious, troubling both kings and
cities:
And that the Jews were
rebellious, and raised always wars therein; for the which cause even this
city was made
desolate.
Wherefore now we do declare unto thee, O lord the king, that if this
city be built again, and the walls thereof set up
anew, thou shalt from henceforth have no passage into Celosyria and Phenice.
I have read the epistle which ye have sent unto me: therefore I commanded to make
diligent search, and it hath been found that that
city was from the beginning practising against kings;
Now therefore I have commanded to hinder those men from building the
city, and
heed to be taken that there be no more done in it;
He wrote letters also unto the lieutenants that were in Celosyria and Phenice, and unto them in Libanus, that they should bring
cedar wood from Libanus unto Jerusalem, and that they should build the
city with him.
And that all they that went from Babylon to build the
city should have free liberty, as well they as their
posterity, and all the priests that went away.
And he commanded to give to all that kept the city pensions and wages.
And they returned unto Jerusalem, and to the other parts of
Jewry, every man to his own
city, who came with Zorobabel, with Jesus, Nehemias, and
Zacharias, and Reesaias, Enenius, Mardocheus. Beelsarus, Aspharasus, Reelius, Roimus, and Baana, their guides.
Let all things be known unto our lord the king, that being come into the country of
Judea, and entered into the
city of Jerusalem we found in the
city of Jerusalem the ancients of the Jews that were of the captivity
In the
thirtieth year after the ruin of the
city I was in Babylon, and lay troubled upon my bed, and my thoughts came up over my heart:
Whom thou commandedst to build a city unto thy name, and to offer incense and oblations unto thee therein.
When this was done many years, then they that inhabited the
city forsook thee,
And so thou gavest thy city over into the hands of thine enemies.
And of all the depths of the sea thou hast filled thee one river: and of all builded
cities thou hast
hallowed Sion unto
thyself:
There is also another thing; A city is builded, and set upon a broad field, and is full of all good things:
If this city now were given unto a man for an inheritance, if he never shall pass the danger set before it, how shall he receive this inheritance?
For unto you is
paradise opened, the tree of life is planted, the time to come is prepared,
plenteousness is made ready, a
city is builded, and rest is allowed,
yea, perfect goodness and wisdom.
And I do now purpose not to return into the
city, but here to stay, and neither to eat nor drink, but continually to
mourn and to fast until I die.
Go thy way then into the city to thine husband.
And she said unto me, That will I not do: I will not go into the city, but here will I die.
And I looked, and, behold, the woman appeared unto me no more, but there was a
city builded, and a large place shewed itself from the foundations: then was I afraid, and
cried with a loud voice, and said,
But now seest thou the likeness of the woman no more, but there appeared unto thee a city builded.
This woman, whom thou sawest is
Sion: and whereas she said unto thee, even she whom thou seest as a
city builded,
But after thirty years Solomon builded the city and offered offerings: and then bare the barren a son.
For in the place wherein the Highest beginneth to
shew his
city, there can no man’s building be able to stand.
And it came to pass, when all the people saw that the seven days were past, and I not come again into the city, they gathered them all together, from the least unto the greatest, and came unto me, and said,
So the people went their way into the city, like as I commanded them:
And one shall undertake to fight against another, one city against another, one place against another, one people against another, and one realm against another.
A man shall desire to go into a city, and shall not be able.
For because of their pride the cities shall be troubled, the houses shall be destroyed, and men shall be afraid.
And they shall break down the cities and walls, mountains and hills, trees of the wood, and grass of the meadows, and their corn.
Thy children shall die of hunger, and thou shalt fall through the sword: thy cities shall be broken down, and all thine shall perish with the sword in the field.
And in the passage they shall
rush on the idle
city, and shall destroy some portion of thy land, and
consume part of thy glory, and shall return to Babylon that was destroyed.
And shall
consume thee, and thy
cities, thy land, and thy mountains; all thy woods and thy fruitful trees shall they burn up with fire.
And the dead shall be cast out as dung, and there shall be no man to comfort them: for the earth shall be wasted, and the cities shall be cast down.
For of a city there shall be ten left, and two of the field, which shall hide themselves in the thick groves, and in the clefts of the rocks.
And they that occupy their
merchandise with
robbery, the more they deck their
cities, their houses, their possessions, and their own persons:
For there shall be in every place, and in the next cities, a great insurrection upon those that fear the Lord.
Who in the time of Enemessar king of the Assyrians was led
captive out of Thisbe, which is at the right hand of that
city, which is called properly Nephthali in
Galilee above Aser.
And I went into Media, and left in trust with Gabael, the brother of Gabrias, at Rages a city of Media ten talents of silver.
It came to pass the same day, that in Ecbatane a city of Media Sara the daughter of Raguel was also reproached by her father’s maids;
O Jerusalem, the holy
city, he will
scourge thee for thy children’s works, and will have mercy again on the sons of the righteous.
In the
twelfth year of the reign of Nabuchodonosor, who reigned in Nineve, the great
city; in the days of Arphaxad, which reigned over the Medes in Ecbatane,
And to all that were in Samaria and the cities thereof, and beyond Jordan unto Jerusalem, and Betane, and Chelus, and Kades, and the river of Egypt, and Taphnes, and Ramesse, and all the land of Gesem,
And became lord of his
cities, and came unto Ecbatane, and took the towers, and
spoiled the streets thereof, and turned the beauty thereof into shame.
Then he went over Euphrates, and went through
Mesopotamia, and destroyed all the high
cities that were upon the river Arbonai, till ye come to the sea.
Then he went down into the plain of Damascus in the time of wheat harvest, and burnt up all their fields, and destroyed their flocks and herds, also he
spoiled their
cities, and utterly wasted their countries, and
smote all their young men with the edge of the sword.
Behold, even our cities and the inhabitants thereof are thy servants; come and deal with them as seemeth good unto thee.
Then came he down toward the sea coast, both he and his army, and set garrisons in the high cities, and took out of them chosen men for aid.
And
cried to the God of Israel all with one consent earnestly, that he would not give their children for a prey, and their wives for a
spoil, and the
cities of their inheritance to destruction, and the sanctuary to
profanation and reproach, and for the nations to
rejoice at.
And he said unto them, Tell me now, ye sons of Chanaan, who this people is, that dwelleth in the hill country, and what are the cities that they inhabit, and what is the multitude of their army, and wherein is their power and strength, and what king is set over them, or captain of their army;
But when they departed from the way which he appointed them, they were destroyed in many battles very
sore, and were led
captives into a land that was not their’s, and the temple of their God was cast to the ground, and their
cities were taken by the enemies.
Now therefore my servants shall bring thee back into the hill country, and shall set thee in one of the cities of the passages:
And when the men of the
city saw them, they took up their weapons, and went out of the
city to the top of the hill: and every man that used a
sling kept them from coming up by casting of stones against them.
But the Israelites descended from their city, and came unto him, and loosed him, and brought him to Bethulia, and presented him to the governors of the city:
