There is
treasure to be
desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a
foolish man spendeth it up.
Precious treasures and oil are in the dwelling of the wise, but a
foolish man consumes them.
The
desire of the
slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour.
The
craving of the slacker kills him because his hands refuse to work.
Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither
desire thou his
dainty meats:
Be not thou
envious against evil men, neither
desire to be with them.
Do not
envy wicked men or
desire their company;
And
whatsoever mine eyes
desired I kept not from them, I
withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart
rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour.
Anything my eyes desired, I did not deny myself. I refused my heart no pleasure. For my heart took delight in all my work, and this was the reward for all my labor.
A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.
God gives a man riches, wealth, and honor, so that he lacks nothing his heart
desires; but God does not allow him to enjoy them. Instead, a stranger will enjoy them. This is
futile and a
grievous affliction.
Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the
desire: this is also vanity and
vexation of spirit.
Better what the eye can see than the wandering of
desire. This too is
futile and a pursuit of the wind.
Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the
almond tree shall
flourish, and the
grasshopper shall be a burden, and
desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:
when men fear the heights and dangers of the road, when the
almond tree blossoms, the
grasshopper loses its spring, and the caper
berry shrivels— for then man goes to his eternal home and mourners walk the streets.
Or ever I was aware, my soul made me like the
chariots of Amminadib.
Before I realized it, my
desire had set me among the royal
chariots of my people.
I am my beloved’s, and his desire is toward me.
I belong to my beloved, and his desire is for me.
For they shall be
ashamed of the oaks which ye have
desired, and ye shall be confounded for the gardens that ye have chosen.
Surely you will be
ashamed of the sacred oaks in which you have delighted; you will be
embarrassed by the gardens that you have chosen.
Behold, I will
stir up the Medes against them, which shall not regard silver; and as for gold, they shall not delight in it.
Behold, I will
stir up against them the Medes, who have no regard for silver and no
desire for gold.
Yea, in the way of thy judgments, O LORD, have we waited for thee; the
desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the
remembrance of thee.
Yes, we wait for You, O LORD; we walk in the path of Your judgments. Your name and
renown are the
desire of our souls.
With my soul have I
desired thee in the night;
yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.
My soul longs for You in the night; indeed, my spirit seeks You at
dawn. For when Your judgments come upon the earth, the people of the world learn righteousness.
That saith of Cyrus, He is my
shepherd, and shall perform all my pleasure: even saying to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be built; and to the temple, Thy foundation shall be laid.
who says of Cyrus, ‘My
shepherd will
fulfill all that I
desire,’ who says of Jerusalem, ‘She will be rebuilt,’ and of the temple, ‘Let its foundation be laid.’”
All ye,
assemble yourselves, and hear; which among them hath declared these things? The LORD hath loved him: he will do his pleasure on Babylon, and his arm shall be on the Chaldeans.
Come together, all of you, and
listen: Which of the idols has
foretold these things? The LORD’s chosen ally will carry out His
desire against Babylon, and His arm will be against the Chaldeans.
For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor
comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should
desire him.
He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no stately form or majesty to
attract us, no beauty that we should
desire Him.
I was
enraged by his sinful
greed, so I struck him and
hid My face in anger; yet he kept turning back to the
desires of his heart.
A wild
ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? all they that seek her will not
weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.
a wild
donkey at home in the wilderness,
sniffing the wind in the heat of her
desire. Who can restrain her passion? All who seek her need not
weary themselves; in mating season they will find her.
As for me, I have not
hastened from being a
pastor to follow thee: neither have I
desired the
woeful day; thou knowest: that which came out of my lips was right before thee.
But I have not run away from being Your
shepherd; I have not
desired the day of
despair. You know that the
utterance of my lips was spoken in Your presence.
But to the land
whereunto they
desire to return, thither shall they not return.
You will never return to the land for which you long.”
Now therefore know certainly that ye shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the
pestilence, in the place
whither ye
desire to go and to
sojourn.
Now therefore, know for sure that by sword and famine and plague you will die in the place where you desire to go to reside.”
So that none of the
remnant of Judah, which are gone into the land of Egypt to
sojourn there, shall escape or remain, that they should return into the land of Judah, to the which they have a
desire to return to dwell there: for none shall return but such as shall escape.
so that none of the
remnant of Judah who have gone to reside in Egypt will escape or
survive to return to the land of Judah, where they long to return and live; for none will return except a few fugitives.”
Behold, therefore I have stretched out my hand over thee, and have diminished thine ordinary food, and delivered thee unto the will of them that
hate thee, the daughters of the Philistines, which are
ashamed of thy
lewd way.
Therefore I stretched out My hand against you and reduced your portion. I gave you over to the
desire of those who
hate you, the daughters of the Philistines, who were
ashamed of your
lewd conduct.
Son of man, behold, I take away from thee the
desire of thine eyes with a stroke: yet neither shalt thou
mourn nor
weep, neither shall thy tears run down.
“Son of man, behold, I am about to take away the
desire of your eyes with a fatal blow. But you must not
mourn or
weep or let your tears flow.
Speak unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will
profane my sanctuary, the
excellency of your strength, the
desire of your eyes, and that which your soul pitieth; and your sons and your daughters whom ye have left shall fall by the sword.
Tell the house of Israel that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘I am about to
desecrate My sanctuary, the pride of your power, the
desire of your eyes, and the delight of your soul. And the sons and daughters you left behind will fall by the sword.’
Also, thou son of man, shall it not be in the day when I take from them their strength, the joy of their glory, the
desire of their eyes, and that
whereupon they set their minds, their sons and their daughters,
And you, son of man, know that on the day I take away their
stronghold, their pride and joy—the
desire of their eyes which
uplifted their souls—and their sons and daughters as well,
Then Daniel went in, and
desired of the king that he would give him time, and that he would
shew the king the interpretation.
So Daniel went in and asked the king to give him some time, so that he could give him the interpretation.
That they would
desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his fellows should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.
urging them to
plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this
mystery, so that Daniel and his friends would not be killed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.
I
thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we
desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king’s matter.
To You, O God of my fathers, I give
thanks and praise, because You have given me wisdom and power. And now You have made known to me what we have requested, for You have made known to us the dream of the king.”
Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the
desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall
magnify himself above all.
He will show no regard for the gods of his fathers, nor for the one
desired by women, nor for any other god, because he will
magnify himself above them all.
For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.
For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.
It is in my
desire that I should
chastise them; and the people shall be gathered against them, when they shall bind themselves in their two furrows.
Woe unto you that
desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light.
Woe to you who long for the Day of the LORD! What will the Day of the LORD be for you? It will be darkness and not light.
Woe is me! for I am as when they have gathered the summer fruits, as the grapegleanings of the
vintage: there is no
cluster to eat: my soul
desired the firstripe fruit.
That they may do evil with both hands earnestly, the prince asketh, and the judge asketh for a reward; and the great man, he uttereth his
mischievous desire: so they
wrap it up.
Both hands are skilled at evil; the prince and the judge demand a
bribe. When the powerful utters his evil
desire, they all
conspire together.
Yea also, because he transgresseth by wine, he is a proud man, neither keepeth at home, who enlargeth his
desire as
hell, and is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all people:
and wealth indeed betrays him. He is an
arrogant man never at rest. He enlarges his
appetite like
Sheol, and like Death, he is never satisfied. He gathers all the nations to himself and collects all the peoples as his own.
Gather
yourselves together,
yea, gather together, O nation not
desired;
Gather
yourselves, gather together, O shameful nation,
And I will
shake all nations, and the
desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts.
I will
shake all the nations, and they will come with all their treasures, and I will fill this house with glory, says the LORD of Hosts.
But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to
repentance.
But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.
If only you had known the meaning of ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent.
For
verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have
desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.
Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou
wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.
“O woman,” Jesus answered, “your faith is great! Let it be done for you as you
desire.” And her daughter was
healed from that very hour.

begged me.
And the cares of this world, and the
deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in,
choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
but the
worries of this life, the
deceitfulness of wealth, and the
desire for other things come in and
choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.

Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and declared, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask.”
Therefore I say unto you, What things
soever ye
desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall havethem.
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
Now at that feast he released unto them one prisoner,
whomsoever they
desired.
Now it was
Pilate’s custom at the feast to release to the people a prisoner of their choosing.
And the multitude crying
aloud began to
desire him to do as he had ever done unto them.
So the crowd went up and began asking
Pilate to keep his custom.

drunk old wine
straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.

For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”

Beware of the
scribes, which
desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts;
“

Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
children born not of blood, nor of the desire or will of man, but born of God.
If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.
If
anyone desires to do His will, he will know whether My teaching is from God or whether I speak on My own.
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a
liar, and the father of it.
You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out his
desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to
uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a
liar and the father of lies.
The same came therefore to Philip, which was of
Bethsaida of
Galilee, and
desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.
They came to Philip, who was from
Bethsaida in

who found favor in the sight of God and asked to provide a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.

And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.

And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and
Sidon: but they came with one
accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king’s
chamberlain their friend,
desired peace; because their country was
nourished by the king’s country.
Now Herod was in a
furious dispute with the people of Tyre and
Sidon, and they
convened before him. Having secured the support of Blastus, the king’s
chamberlain, they asked for peace, because their region depended on the king’s country for food.
Which was with the deputy of the country,

When they asked him to stay for a while longer, he declined.
And he said, The Jews have agreed to
desire thee that thou wouldest bring down Paul to
morrow into the council, as though they would
enquire somewhat of him more perfectly.

ambush to kill him along the way.
Where we found brethren, and were
desired to
tarry with them seven days: and so we went toward Rome.
There we found some brothers who invited us to
spend the week with them. And so we came to Rome.
But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against.
But we consider your views worth hearing, because we know that people everywhere are speaking against this sect.”
Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
Therefore God gave them over in the desires of their hearts to impurity for the dishonoring of their bodies with one another.
Let not sin therefore reign in your
mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
Therefore do not let sin reign in your
mortal body so that you obey its
desires.
But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of
concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.
But sin, seizing its opportunity through the commandment, produced in me every kind of
covetous desire. For apart from the law, sin is dead.
For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh; for I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.
So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
So then, it does not depend on man’s desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.
Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.
Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is for their salvation.
But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
Instead,
clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the
desires of the flesh.
But now having no more place in these parts, and having a great desire these many years to come unto you;
But now that there are no further
opportunities for me in these regions, and since I have longed for many years to visit you,
But
covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet
shew I unto you a more excellent way.
But eagerly desire the greater gifts. And now I will show you the most excellent way.
Follow after charity, and
desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may
prophesy.
Earnestly pursue love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.
As touching our brother Apollos, I greatly desired him to come unto you with the brethren: but his will was not at all to come at this time; but he will come when he shall have convenient time.
Now about our brother Apollos: I strongly urged him to go to you with the brothers. He was not at all inclined to go now, but he will go when he has the opportunity.
and not only by his arrival, but also by the comfort he had received from you. He told us about your longing, your
mourning, and your zeal for me, so that I
rejoiced all the more.
For behold this
selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you,
yea, what clearing of
yourselves,
yea, what
indignation,
yea, what fear,
yea, what
vehement desire,
yea, what zeal,
yea, what
revenge! In all things ye have approved
yourselves to be clear in this matter.
Consider what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear
yourselves, what
indignation, what
alarm, what longing, what zeal, what
vindication! In every way you have proved
yourselves to be innocent in this matter.
Insomuch that we
desired Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also finish in you the same grace also.
So we urged
Titus to help complete your act of grace, just as he had started it.
And
herein I give my advice: for this is expedient for you, who have begun before, not only to do, but also to be forward a year ago.
And this is my opinion about what is helpful for you in this matter: Last year you were the first not only to give, but even to have such a desire.
But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion from them which desire occasion; that wherein they glory, they may be found even as we.
But I will keep on doing what I am doing, in order to undercut those who want an opportunity to be regarded as our equals in the things of which they
boast.
For though I would
desire to glory, I shall not be a
fool; for I will say the truth: but now I
forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he
seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me.
Even if I wanted to
boast, I would not be a
fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I
refrain, so no one will credit me with more than he sees in me or hears from me,
I
desired Titus, and with him I sent a brother. Did
Titus make a gain of you? walked we not in the same spirit? walked we not in the same steps?
I urged
Titus to visit you, and I sent our brother with him. Did
Titus exploit you in any way? Did we not walk in the same Spirit and follow in the same footsteps?
But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and
beggarly elements,
whereunto ye
desire again to be in
bondage?
But now that you know God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you are turning back to those weak and worthless principles? Do you wish to be
enslaved by them all over again?
I desire to be present with you now, and to change my voice; for I stand in doubt of you.
how I wish I could be with you now and change my tone, because I am
perplexed about you.
