And when Joshua had let the people go, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.
After Joshua had dismissed the people, the Israelites went out to take possession of the land, each to his own inheritance.
So he brought down the people unto the water: and the LORD said unto
Gideon,
Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise
every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink.
So
Gideon brought the people down to the water, and the LORD said to him, “Separate those who
lap the water with their tongues like a dog from those who
kneel to drink.”
And the LORD said unto
Gideon, By the three hundred men that
lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go
every man unto his place.
Then the LORD said to
Gideon, “With the three hundred men who
lapped the water I will save you and deliver the Midianites into your hand. But all the others are to go home.”
So the people took
victuals in their hand, and their
trumpets: and he sent all the rest of Israel
every man unto his tent, and retained those three hundred men: and the host of
Midian was beneath him in the valley.
So
Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites to their tents but kept the three hundred men, who took charge of the provisions and rams’ horns of the others. And the camp of
Midian lay below him in the valley.
And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a
trumpet in
every man’s hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers.
And he divided the three hundred men into three companies and gave each man a ram’s horn in one hand and a large
jar in the other, containing a
torch.
When I blow with a
trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the
trumpets also on
every side of all the camp, and say, The sword of the LORD, and of
Gideon.
When I and all who are with me blow our horns, then you are also to blow your horns from all around the camp and
shout, ‘For the LORD and for
Gideon!’”
And they stood
every man in his place round about the camp: and all the host ran, and
cried, and fled.
Each
Israelite took his position around the camp, and the entire Midianite army fled, crying out as they ran.
And the three hundred
blew the
trumpets, and the LORD set
every man’s sword against his fellow, even throughout all the host: and the host fled to Beth-
shittah in Zererath, and to the border of
Abel-meholah, unto Tabbath.
And when the three hundred rams’ horns sounded, the LORD set all the men in the camp against one another with their swords. The army fled to Beth-
shittah toward Zererah as far as the border of
Abel-meholah near Tabbath.
And
Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me
every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were
Ishmaelites.)
Then he added, “Let me make a request of you, that each of you give me an
earring from his
plunder.” (For the enemies had gold earrings because they were
Ishmaelites.)
And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey.
“We will give them
gladly,” they replied. So they spread out a garment, and each man threw an
earring from his
plunder onto it.
And the children of Israel remembered not the LORD their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:
The Israelites failed to remember the LORD their God who had delivered them from the hands of all their enemies on every side.
And all the people likewise cut down
every man his
bough, and followed
Abimelech, and put them to the hold, and set the hold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of
Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.
So each man also cut his own branch and followed
Abimelech. Then they piled the branches against the inner chamber and set it on fire above them, killing
everyone in the tower of
Shechem, about a thousand men and women.
And when the men of Israel saw that
Abimelech was dead, they departed
every man unto his place.
And when the Israelites saw that
Abimelech was dead, they all went home.
And now art thou any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he
ever strive against Israel, or did he
ever fight against them,
Are you now so much better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he
ever contend with Israel or fight against them?
And the angel of the LORD said unto
Manoah, Of all that I said unto the woman let her
beware.
So the angel of the LORD answered
Manoah, “Your wife is to do
everything I told her.
She may not eat of any thing that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing: all that I commanded her let her observe.
She must not eat anything that comes from the vine, nor drink any wine or strong drink, nor eat anything unclean. She must do everything I have commanded her.”
And the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and said unto her,
Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lieth, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to
afflict him: and we will give thee
every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver.
The lords of the Philistines went to her and said, “
Entice him and find out the source of his great strength and how we can overpower him to
tie him up and
subdue him. Then each one of us will give you eleven hundred shekels of silver.”
In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
In those days there was no king in Israel;
everyone did what was right in his own eyes.
And the old man said, Peace be with thee;
howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only
lodge not in the street.
“Peace to you,” said the old man. “Let me supply
everything you need. Only do not
spend the night in the square.”
And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.
And
everyone who saw it said, “Nothing like this has been seen or done from the day the Israelites came out of the land of Egypt until this day. Think it over, take counsel, and speak up!”
And we will take ten men of an hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and an hundred of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to
fetch victual for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that they have wrought in Israel.
We will take ten men out of
every hundred from all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred out of
every thousand, and a thousand out of
every ten thousand, to supply provisions for the army when they go to Gibeah in Benjamin to
punish them for the
atrocity they have committed in Israel.”
Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded;
every one could
sling stones at an hair breadth, and not miss.
Among all these soldiers there were 700 select left-handers, each of whom could
sling a stone at a hair without missing.
And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and
smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of
every city, as the beast, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to.
And the men of Israel turned back against the other Benjamites and put to the sword all the cities, including the animals and everything else they found. And they burned down all the cities in their path.
And this is the thing that ye shall do, Ye shall utterly destroy
every male, and
every woman that hath
lain by man.
This is what you are to do:
Devote to destruction
every male, as well as
every female who has had relations with a man.”
And see, and, behold, if the daughters of
Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you
every man his wife of the daughters of
Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.
and watch. When you see the daughters of
Shiloh come out to perform their dances, each of you is to come out of the vineyards, catch for himself a wife from the daughters of
Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.
And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance.
And at that time, each of the Israelites returned from there to his own tribe and clan, each to his own inheritance.
In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
In those days there was no king in Israel;
everyone did what was right in his own eyes.
Where thou
diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.
Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD
punish me, and
ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me.”
And she said unto her, All that thou sayest unto me I will do.
“I will do
everything you say,”
Ruth answered.
And she went down unto the floor, and did according to all that her mother in law
bade her.
So she went down to the
threshing floor and did
everything her mother-in-law had
instructed her to do.
And she
vowed a
vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou
wilt indeed look on the
affliction of thine
handmaid, and remember me, and not
forget thine
handmaid, but
wilt give unto thine
handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no
razor come upon his head.
But
Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be
weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and there
abide for
ever.
but
Hannah did not go. “After the boy is
weaned,” she said to her husband, “I will take him to appear before the LORD and to stay there permanently.”
Now
Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel; and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
Now
Eli was very old, and he heard about
everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they were sleeping with the women who served at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for
ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that
despise me shall be lightly esteemed.
Therefore, the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I did indeed say that your house and the house of your father would walk before Me
forever. But now the LORD declares: Far be it from Me! For I will honor those who honor Me, but those who
despise Me will be
disdained.
And thou shalt see an enemy in my
habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in thine house for
ever.
You will see distress in My dwelling place.
Despite all that is good in Israel, no one in your house will
ever again reach old age.
And the man of thine, whom I shall not cut off from mine altar, shall be to
consume thine eyes, and to
grieve thine heart: and all the increase of thine house shall die in the flower of their age.
And
every one of you that I do not cut off from My altar, your eyes will fail and your heart will
grieve. All your descendants will die by the sword of men.
And I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in mine heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before mine
anointed for
ever.
Then I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest. He will do whatever is in My heart and mind. And I will build for him an
enduring house, and he will walk before My
anointed one for all time.
And it shall come to pass, that
every one that is left in thine house shall come and
crouch to him for a piece of silver and a
morsel of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the priests’ offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.
And
everyone left in your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver or a
morsel of bread,
pleading, “Please
appoint me to some priestly office so that I can eat a piece of bread.”’”
And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of
every one that heareth it shall
tingle.
Then the LORD said to Samuel, “I am about to do something in Israel at which the ears of all who hear it will
tingle.
In that day I will perform against
Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.
On that day I will carry out against
Eli everything I have spoken about his family, from beginning to end.
For I have told him that I will judge his house for
ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves
vile, and he restrained them not.
I told him that I would judge his house
forever for the iniquity of which he knows, because his sons
blasphemed God and he did not restrain them.
And therefore I have
sworn unto the house of
Eli, that the iniquity of
Eli’s house shall not be
purged with sacrifice nor offering for
ever.
Therefore I have
sworn to the house of
Eli, ‘The iniquity of
Eli’s house shall never be
atoned for by sacrifice or offering.’”
And he said, What is the thing that the LORD hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee.
“What was the message He gave you?”
Eli asked. “Do not hide it from me. May God
punish you, and
ever so severely, if you hide from me anything He said to you.”
And Samuel told him
every whit, and
hid nothing from him. And he said, It is the LORD: let him do what seemeth him good.
So Samuel told him
everything and did not hide a thing from him. “He is the LORD,” replied
Eli. “Let Him do what is good in His eyes.”
And the Philistines fought, and Israel was
smitten, and they fled
every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand
footmen.
So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and each man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great—thirty thousand foot soldiers of Israel fell.
And he went from year to year in circuit to
Bethel, and
Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged Israel in all those places.
Every year he would go on a circuit from
Bethel to
Gilgal to
Mizpah, judging Israel in all these places.
And the LORD said to Samuel,
Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye
every man unto his city.
“
Listen to their voice,” the LORD said to Samuel. “
Appoint a king for them.” Then Samuel told the men of Israel, “
Everyone must go back to his city.”
And he said unto him, Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honourable man; all that he saith cometh surely to pass: now let us go thither;
peradventure he can
shew us our way that we should go.
“Look,” said the servant, “in this city there is a man of God who is highly respected; everything he says surely comes to pass. Let us go there now. Perhaps he will tell us which way to go.”
Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.
Then Samuel explained to the people the rights of
kingship. He wrote them on a
scroll and laid it up before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, each to his own home.
And Nahash the
Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.
But Nahash the
Ammonite replied, “I will make a treaty with you on one condition, that I may put out
everyone’s right eye and bring reproach upon all Israel.”
And the LORD sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and
Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on
every side, and ye dwelled safe.
So the LORD sent Jerubbaal,
Barak,
Jephthah, and Samuel, and He delivered you from the hands of your enemies on
every side, and you dwelt securely.
Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel;
whereof two thousand were with Saul in
Michmash and in mount
Bethel, and a thousand were with
Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent
every man to his tent.
He chose for himself three thousand men of Israel: Two thousand were with Saul at
Michmash and in the hill country of
Bethel, and a thousand were with
Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin. And the rest of the troops he sent away, each to his own home.
And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done
foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for
ever.
“You have acted
foolishly,” Samuel declared. “You have not kept the command that the LORD your God gave you; if you had, the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.
But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to
sharpen every man his share, and his
coulter, and his
axe, and his
mattock.
Instead, all the Israelites would go down to the Philistines to
sharpen their plowshares, mattocks, axes, and sickles.
And the
watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went on beating down one another.
Now when Saul’s
watchmen at Gibeah in Benjamin looked and saw the troops melting away and
scattering in
every direction,
And Saul and all the people that were with him assembled themselves, and they came to the battle: and, behold,
every man’s sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great
discomfiture.
Then Saul and all his troops assembled and marched to the battle, and they found the Philistines in total confusion, with each man
wielding the sword against his
neighbor.
And Saul said,
Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, Bring me
hither every man his ox, and
every man his sheep, and
slay them here, and eat; and sin not against the LORD in eating with the blood. And all the people brought
every man his ox with him that night, and
slew them there.
Then he said, “Go among the troops and tell them, ‘Each man must bring me his ox or his sheep, slaughter them in this place, and then eat. Do not sin against the LORD by eating meat with the blood still in it.’” So that night
everyone brought his ox and slaughtered it there.
And Saul answered, God do so and more also: for thou shalt surely die,
Jonathan.
And Saul declared, “May God
punish me, and
ever so severely, if you,
Jonathan, do not surely die!”
So Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought against all his enemies on
every side, against Moab, and against the children of
Ammon, and against
Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines: and
whithersoever he turned himself, he
vexed them.
After Saul had assumed the
kingship over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on
every side—the Moabites, the
Ammonites, the Edomites, the kings of Zobah, and the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he routed them.
But Saul and the people
spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but
every thing that was
vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.
Saul and his troops
spared Agag, along with the best of the sheep and cattle, the fat
calves and lambs, and the best of
everything else. They were unwilling to destroy them, but they devoted to destruction all that was
despised and worthless.
And the
Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.
For forty days the
Philistine came forward
every morning and evening to take his stand.
And David went out
whithersoever Saul sent him, and
behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.
So David marched out and
prospered in
everything Saul sent him to do, and Saul set him over the men of war. And this was pleasing in the sight of all the people, and of Saul’s officers as well.
Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David
behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.
Every time the
Philistine commanders came out for battle, David was more successful than all of Saul’s officers, so that his name was highly esteemed.
And
Jonathan said, Far be it from thee: for if I knew certainly that evil were determined by my father to come upon thee, then would not I tell it thee?
“Never!”
Jonathan replied. “If I
ever found out that my father had evil intentions against you, would I not tell you?”
The LORD do so and much more to
Jonathan: but if it please my father to do thee evil, then I will
shew it thee, and send thee away, that thou mayest go in peace: and the LORD be with thee, as he hath been with my father.
But if my father intends to bring evil on you, then may the LORD
punish me, and
ever so severely, if I do not tell you and send you on your way in safety. May the LORD be with you, just as He has been with my father.
But also thou shalt not cut off thy kindness from my house for ever: no, not when the LORD hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth.
and do not ever cut off your loving devotion from my household—not even when the LORD cuts off every one of David’s enemies from the face of the earth.”
And as touching the matter which thou and I have spoken of, behold, the LORD be between thee and me for ever.
And as for the matter you and I have discussed, the LORD is a witness between you and me
forever.”
And
Jonathan said to David, Go in peace,
forasmuch as we have
sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for
ever. And he arose and departed: and
Jonathan went into the city.
And
Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, for the two of us have
sworn in the name of the LORD, saying, ‘May the LORD be a witness between you and me, and between your descendants and mine
forever.’” Then David got up and departed, and
Jonathan went back into the city.
And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.
And all who were distressed or indebted or discontented
rallied around him, and he became their leader. About four hundred men were with him.
Then Saul said unto his servants that stood about him, Hear now, ye Benjamites; will the son of
Jesse give
every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds;
Then Saul said to his servants, “
Listen, men of Benjamin! Is the son of
Jesse giving all of you fields and vineyards and making you commanders of thousands or hundreds?
And David said unto
Abiathar, I knew it that day, when Doeg the
Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul: I have occasioned the death of all the persons of thy father’s house.
Then David said to
Abiathar, “I knew that Doeg the
Edomite was there that day, and that he was sure to tell Saul. I myself am responsible for the lives of
everyone in your father’s house.
And David abode in the wilderness in strong holds, and remained in a mountain in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God delivered him not into his hand.
And David stayed in the wilderness strongholds and in the hill country of the Wilderness of Ziph. Day after day Saul searched for him, but God would not deliver David into his hand.
And Nabal answered David’s servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of
Jesse? there be many servants now a days that break away
every man from his master.
But Nabal asked them, “Who is David? Who is this son of
Jesse? Many servants these days are breaking away from their masters.
And David said unto his men,
Gird ye on
every man his sword. And they
girded on
every man his sword; and David also
girded on his sword: and there went up after David about four hundred men; and two hundred abode by the stuff.
And David said to his men, “
Strap on your swords!” So David and all his men put on their swords, and about four hundred men followed David, while two hundred stayed with the supplies.
So and more also do God unto the enemies of David, if I leave of all that
pertain to him by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall.
May God
punish David, and
ever so severely, if I let one of Nabal’s men
survive until morning.”
The LORD render to
every man his righteousness and his faithfulness: for the LORD delivered thee into my hand to day, but I would not stretch forth mine hand against the LORD’S
anointed.
May the LORD repay
every man for his righteousness and faithfulness. For the LORD delivered you into my hand
today, but I would not stretch out my hand against the LORD’s
anointed.
And David dwelt with Achish at
Gath, he and his men,
every man with his household, even David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and
Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal’s wife.
David and his men settled in
Gath with Achish. Each man had his family with him, and David had his two wives: Ahinoam of
Jezreel and
Abigail of
Carmel, the widow of Nabal.
And Achish believed David, saying, He hath made his people Israel utterly to
abhor him; therefore he shall be my servant for
ever.
So Achish trusted David, thinking, “Since he has made himself an utter
stench to his people Israel, he will be my servant
forever.”
And David said to Achish, Surely thou shalt know what thy servant can do. And Achish said to David, Therefore will I make thee keeper of mine head for ever.
David replied, “Then you will come to know what your servant can do.” “Very well,” said Achish. “I will make you my
bodyguard for life.”
And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was
grieved,
every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.
And David was greatly distressed because the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of
every man
grieved for his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the LORD his God.
And David recovered all that the
Amalekites had carried away: and David
rescued his two wives.
So David recovered
everything the
Amalekites had taken, including his two wives.
And there was nothing lacking to them, neither small nor great, neither sons nor daughters, neither
spoil, nor any thing that they had taken to them: David recovered all.
Nothing was missing, young or old, son or daughter, or any of the
plunder the
Amalekites had taken. David brought
everything back.
Then answered all the wicked men and men of
Belial, of those that went with David, and said, Because they went not with us, we will not give them ought of the
spoil that we have recovered, save to
every man his wife and his children, that they may lead them away, and depart.
but all the wicked and worthless men among those who had gone with David said, “Because they did not go with us, we will not share with them the
plunder we recovered, except for each man’s wife and children. They may take them and go.”
And his men that were with him did David bring up,
every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of
Hebron.
David also took the men who were with him, each with his household, and they settled in the towns near
Hebron.
And they caught
every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in
Gibeon.
Then each man
grabbed his
opponent by the head and thrust his sword into his
opponent’s side, and they all fell together. So this place, which is in
Gibeon, is called Helkath-hazzurim.
Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore
Abner with the hinder end of the
spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the
spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where
Asahel fell down and died stood still.
But
Asahel refused to turn away; so
Abner thrust the
butt of his
spear into his stomach, and it came out his back, and he fell dead on the spot. And
every man
paused when he came to the place where
Asahel had fallen and died.
Then
Abner called to
Joab, and said, Shall the sword
devour for
ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then,
ere thou
bid the people return from following their brethren?
Then
Abner called out to
Joab: “Must the sword
devour forever? Do you not
realize that this will only end in bitterness? How long before you tell the troops to stop pursuing their brothers?”
And
Joab said, As God liveth, unless thou hadst spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up
every one from following his brother.
“As surely as God lives,”
Joab replied, “if you had not spoken up, the troops would have continued pursuing their brothers until morning.”
So do God to
Abner, and more also, except, as the LORD hath
sworn to David, even so I do to him;
May God
punish Abner, and
ever so severely, if I do not do for David what the LORD has
sworn to him:
And afterward when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the LORD for
ever from the blood of
Abner the son of
Ner:
Afterward, David heard about this and said, “I and my kingdom are
forever guiltless before the LORD concerning the blood of
Abner son of
Ner.
And when all the people came to cause David to eat meat while it was yet day, David
sware, saying, So do God to me, and more also, if I taste bread, or ought else, till the sun be down.
Then all the people came and urged David to eat something while it was still day, but David took an oath, saying, “May God
punish me, and
ever so severely, if I taste bread or anything else before the sun sets!”
And all the people took notice of it, and it pleased them: as
whatsoever the king did pleased all the people.
All the people took note and were pleased. In fact, everything the king did pleased them.
And David was afraid of the LORD that day, and said, How shall the ark of the LORD come to me?
That day David feared the LORD and asked, “How can the ark of the LORD ever come to me?”
And he dealt among all the people, even among the whole multitude of Israel, as well to the women as men, to
every one a
cake of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a
flagon of wine. So all the people departed
every one to his house.
Then he distributed to
every man and woman among the multitude of Israel a
loaf of bread, a date
cake, and a
raisin cake. And all the people departed, each for his own home.
In all the places wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel spake I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people Israel, saying, Why build ye not me an house of
cedar?
In all My journeys with all the Israelites, have I
ever asked any of the leaders I appointed to
shepherd My people Israel, ‘Why
haven’t you built Me a house of
cedar?’
He shall build an house for my name, and I will
stablish the throne of his kingdom for
ever.
He will build a house for My Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom
forever.
And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.
Wherefore thou art great, O LORD God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
How great You are, O Lord GOD! For there is none like You, and there is no God but You, according to everything we have heard with our own ears.
For thou hast confirmed to
thyself thy people Israel to be a people unto thee for
ever: and thou, LORD, art become their God.
For You have established Your people Israel as Your very own
forever, and You, O LORD, have become their God.
