And God said, Let there be a
firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters
from the waters.

expanse between the waters, to separate the waters
from the waters.”

firmament, and divided the waters which were under the
firmament from the waters which were above the
firmament: and it was so.
So God made the
expanse and separated the waters beneath it
from the waters above. And it was so.
And God said, Let there be lights in the
firmament of the heaven to divide the day
from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
And God said, “Let there be lights in the
expanse of the sky to distinguish between the day and the night, and let them be signs to mark the seasons and days and years.

And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
And by the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on that day He rested from all His work.
And God blessed the seventh day, and
sanctified it: because that in it he had rested
from all his work which God created and made.
Then God blessed the seventh day and
sanctified it, because on that day He rested
from all the work of creation that He had accomplished.
But there went up a
mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.
But springs welled up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.
And a river went out of
Eden to water the garden; and
from thence it was parted, and became into four heads.
Now a river flowed out of
Eden to water the garden, and
from there it branched into four headwaters:
And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
And the LORD God commanded him, “You may eat freely from every tree of the garden,
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.”

Now the serpent was more
subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman,
Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
Now the serpent was more
crafty than any beast of the field that the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat
from any tree in the garden?’”
And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife
hid themselves
from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

breeze of the day, and they
hid themselves
from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
And he said, Who told thee that thou
wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree,
whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
“Who told you that you were naked?” asked the LORD God. “Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”
And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
And the man answered, “The woman whom You gave me, she gave me fruit
from the tree, and I
ate it.”
And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast
hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it:
cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
And to Adam He said: “Because you have
listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten
from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat,
cursed is the ground because of you; through
toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.
And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil. And now, lest he reach out his hand and take also
from the tree of life, and eat, and live
forever...”
Therefore the LORD God sent him forth
from the garden of
Eden, to till the ground
from whence he was taken.
Therefore the LORD God banished him
from the Garden of
Eden to work the ground
from which he had been taken.
And Adam knew
Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare
Cain, and said, I have
gotten a man
from the LORD.

Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to

And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.
“What have you done?” replied the LORD. “The voice of your brother’s blood
cries out to Me
from the ground.
And now art thou
cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood
from thy hand;
Now you are
cursed and banished
from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood
from your hand.
Behold, thou hast driven me out this day
from the face of the earth; and
from thy face shall I be
hid; and I shall be a
fugitive and a
vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall
slay me.
Behold, this day You have driven me
from the face of the earth, and
from Your face I will be hidden; I will be a
fugitive and a
wanderer on the earth, and
whoever finds me will kill me.”
And
Cain went out
from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of
Nod, on the east of
Eden.

Cain went out
from the presence of the LORD and settled in the land of
Nod, east of
Eden.
And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created
from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the
creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.
So the LORD said, “I will
blot out man, whom I have created,
from the face of the earth—every man and beast and
crawling creature and bird of the air—for I am
grieved that I have made them.”
A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a
cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.
You are to make a roof for the ark, finish its walls a
cubit from the top, place a door in the side of the ark, and build lower, middle, and upper decks.
And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.
And behold, I will bring floodwaters upon the earth to destroy every creature under the heavens that has the breath of life. Everything on the earth will perish.
For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.
For seven days
from now I will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will
wipe from the face of the earth every living thing I have made.”
And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the
creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed
from the earth: and
Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.
And every living thing on the face of the earth was destroyed—man and
livestock,
crawling creatures and birds of the air; they were
blotted out
from the earth, and only
Noah and those with him in the ark remained.
The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained;
The springs of the deep and the floodgates of the heavens were closed, and the rain from the sky was restrained.
And the waters returned
from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were
abated.
The waters
receded steadily
from the earth, and after 150 days the waters had gone down.
And he sent forth a
raven, which went forth to and
fro, until the waters were dried up
from off the earth.
and sent out a
raven. It kept flying back and forth until the waters had dried up
from the earth.
Also he sent forth a
dove from him, to see if the waters were
abated from off the face of the ground;
Then
Noah sent out a
dove to see if the waters had
receded from the surface of the ground.
And he stayed yet other seven days; and again he sent forth the
dove out of the ark;
Noah waited seven more days and again sent out the
dove from the ark.
And the
dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off: so
Noah knew that the waters were
abated from off the earth.
And behold, the
dove returned to him in the evening with a freshly
plucked olive leaf in her
beak. So
Noah knew that the waters had
receded from the earth.
And it came to pass in the six
hundredth and first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried up
from off the earth: and
Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and, behold, the face of the ground was dry.
In
Noah’s six hundred and first year, on the first day of the first month, the waters had dried up
from the earth. So
Noah removed the covering
from the ark and saw that the surface of the ground was dry.
And
Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
Then
Noah built an altar to the LORD. And taking
from every kind of clean animal and clean bird, he offered burnt offerings on the altar.
And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again
curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil
from his youth; neither will I again
smite any more every thing living, as I have done.
When the LORD smelled the pleasing
aroma, He said in His heart, “Never again will I
curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil
from his youth. And never again will I destroy all living creatures as I have done.
And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man.
And surely I will require the life of any man or beast by whose hand your
lifeblood is shed. I will demand an accounting
from anyone who takes the life of his fellow man:
And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth.
and with every living creature that was with you—the birds, the
livestock, and every beast of the earth—every living thing that came out of the ark.
These are the three sons of
Noah: and of them was the whole earth overspread.
These three were the sons of
Noah, and
from them the whole earth was
populated.
And
Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him.
By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.
From these, the maritime peoples separated into their territories, according to their languages, by clans within their nations.
Out of that land went forth Asshur, and builded
Nineveh, and the city Rehoboth, and
Calah,
From that land he went forth into Assyria, where he built
Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir,
Calah,
And Pathrusim, and Casluhim, (out of whom came
Philistim,) and Caphtorim.
the Pathrusites, the Casluhites (from whom the Philistines came), and the Caphtorites.
And their dwelling was from Mesha, as thou goest unto Sephar a mount of the east.
Their territory extended from Mesha to Sephar, in the eastern hill country.
These are the families of the sons of
Noah, after their generations, in their nations: and by these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood.
All these are the clans of
Noah’s sons, according to their generations and nations.
From these the nations of the earth spread out after the flood.
And it came to pass, as they journeyed
from the east, that they found a plain in the land of
Shinar; and they dwelt there.
And as people journeyed eastward, they found a plain in the land of
Shinar and settled there.
And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
And the LORD said, “If they have begun to do this as one people speaking the same language, then nothing they
devise will be beyond them.
So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.
So the LORD scattered them from there over the face of all the earth, and they stopped building the city.
Therefore is the name of it called
Babel; because the LORD did there
confound the language of all the earth: and
from thence did the LORD
scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
That is why it is called
Babel, for there the LORD confused the language of the whole world, and
from that place the LORD scattered them over the face of all the earth.
And Terah took
Abram his son, and Lot the son of
Haran his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son
Abram’s wife; and they went forth with them
from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of
Canaan; and they came unto
Haran, and dwelt there.
And Terah took his son
Abram, his grandson Lot son of
Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai the wife of
Abram, and they set out
from Ur of the Chaldeans for the land of
Canaan. But when they arrived in
Haran, they settled there.
Now the LORD had said unto
Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and
from thy kindred, and
from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will
shew thee:
Then the LORD said to
Abram, “Leave your country, your kindred, and your father’s household, and go to the land I will show you.
And he removed
from thence unto a mountain on the east of
Bethel, and pitched his tent, having
Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD.
From there
Abram moved on to the hill country east of
Bethel and pitched his tent, with
Bethel to the west and
Ai to the east. There he built an altar to the LORD, and he called on the name of the LORD.
And he went on his journeys
from the south even to
Bethel, unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between
Bethel and Hai;
From the Negev he journeyed
from place to place toward
Bethel, until he came to the place between
Bethel and
Ai where his tent had formerly been pitched,
Is not the whole land before thee? separate
thyself, I pray thee,
from me: if thou
wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.
Is not the whole land before you? Now separate
yourself from me. If you go to the left, I will go to the right; if you go to the right, I will go to the left.”
Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.
So Lot chose the whole plain of the Jordan for himself and set out toward the east. And
Abram and Lot parted company.
And the LORD said unto
Abram, after that Lot was separated
from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look
from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:
After Lot had departed, the LORD said to
Abram, “Now lift up your eyes
from the place where you are, and look to the north and south and east and west,
And the king of
Sodom went out to meet him after his return
from the slaughter of
Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king’s
dale.
After
Abram returned
from defeating
Chedorlaomer and the kings allied with him, the king of
Sodom went out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).
That I will not take
from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made
Abram rich:
that I will not accept even a thread, or a
strap of a
sandal, or anything that belongs to you, lest you should say, ‘I have made
Abram rich.’
And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own
bowels shall be thine heir.
Then the word of the LORD came to
Abram, saying, “This one will not be your heir, but one who comes
from your own body will be your heir.”
In the same day the LORD made a covenant with
Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land,
from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:
On that day the LORD made a covenant with
Abram, saying, “To your descendants I have given this land—
from the river of Egypt to the great River Euphrates—
And Sarai said unto
Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me
from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my
maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And
Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.
So Sarai said to
Abram, “Look now, the LORD has prevented me
from bearing children. Please go to my
maidservant; perhaps I can build a family by her.” And
Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
But
Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy
maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled
from her face.
“Here,” said
Abram, “your servant is in your hands. Do whatever you want with her.” Then Sarai treated
Hagar so harshly that she fled
from her.
“
Hagar, servant of Sarai,” he said, “where have you come
from, and where are you going?” “I am running away
from my
mistress Sarai,” she replied.
And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.
I will make you exceedingly fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will descend from you.
And he that is eight days old shall be
circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed.
Generation after generation, every male must be
circumcised when he is eight days old, including those born in your household and those purchased
from a foreigner—even those who are not your offspring.
But if any male is not
circumcised, he will be cut off
from his people; he has broken My covenant.”
And I will
bless her, and give thee a son also of her:
yea, I will
bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.
And I will
bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will
bless her, and she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will descend
from her.”
And he left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham.
When He had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.
And all the men of his house, born in the house, and bought with money of the stranger, were
circumcised with him.
And all the men of Abraham’s household—both servants born in his household and those purchased
from foreigners—were
circumcised with him.
And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground,
And Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he ran from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.
And said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:
“My lord,” said Abraham, “if I have found favor in your sight, please do not pass your servant by.
And the men rose up
from thence, and looked toward
Sodom: and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way.
When the men got up to leave, they looked out over
Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them to see them off.
And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;
And the LORD said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?
And the men turned their faces
from thence, and went toward
Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the LORD.
And the two men turned away and went toward
Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the LORD.
That be far
from thee to do after this manner, to
slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far
from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?
Far be it from You to do such a thing—to kill the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike. Far be it from You! Will not the Judge of all the earth do what is right?”
But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of
Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people
from every quarter:
Before they had gone to bed, all the men of the city of
Sodom, both young and old, surrounded the house.
Then the LORD rained down sulfur and fire on
Sodom and
Gomorrah—
from the LORD out of the heavens.
But his wife looked back
from behind him, and she became a
pillar of salt.
But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a
pillar of salt.
And he looked toward
Sodom and
Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and
beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.
He looked down toward
Sodom and
Gomorrah and all the land of the plain, and he saw the smoke rising
from the land like smoke
from a furnace.
And Abraham journeyed
from thence toward the south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and
sojourned in
Gerar.
Now Abraham journeyed
from there to the region of the Negev and settled between Kadesh and Shur. While he was staying in
Gerar,
And God said unto him in a dream,
Yea, I know that thou
didst this in the
integrity of thy heart; for I also
withheld thee
from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.
Then God said to
Abimelech in the dream, “
Yes, I know that you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you
from sinning against Me. That is why I did not let you touch her.
And it came to pass, when God caused me to
wander from my father’s house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt
shew unto me; at every place
whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother.
So when God had me journey
from my father’s house, I said to
Sarah, ‘This is how you can show your
loyalty to me: Wherever we go, say of me, “He is my brother.”’”
And God heard the voice of the
lad; and the angel of God called
Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee,
Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the
lad where he is.
Then God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of God called to
Hagar from heaven, “What is wrong,
Hagar? Do not be afraid, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he lies.
And he dwelt in the wilderness of
Paran: and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt.
And while he was dwelling in the Wilderness of
Paran, his mother got a wife for him
from the land of Egypt.
And Abraham set seven
ewe lambs of the flock by themselves.
Abraham separated seven
ewe lambs
from the flock,
And he said, For these seven
ewe lambs shalt thou take of my hand, that they may be a witness unto me, that I have
digged this well.
He replied, “You are to accept the seven
ewe lambs
from my hand as my witness that I
dug this well.”
And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.
Just then the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, “Abraham, Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied.
And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the
lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not
withheld thy son, thine only son
from me.
“Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him,” said the angel, “for now I know that you fear God, since you have not
withheld your only son
from me.”
And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,
And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time,
And Abraham stood up
from before his dead, and spake unto the sons of
Heth, saying,
Then Abraham got up
from beside his dead wife and said to the
Hittites,
Hear us, my lord: thou art a mighty prince among us: in the choice of our
sepulchres bury thy dead; none of us shall
withhold from thee his
sepulchre, but that thou mayest
bury thy dead.
“
Listen to us, sir. You are God’s chosen one among us.
Bury your dead in the finest of our tombs. None of us will
withhold his tomb for
burying your dead.”
And he spake unto Ephron in the
audience of the people of the land, saying, But if thou
wilt give it, I pray thee, hear me: I will give thee money for the field; take it of me, and I will
bury my dead there.
and said to Ephron in their presence, “If you will please
listen to me, I will pay you the price of the field. Accept it
from me, so that I may
bury my dead there.”
And I will make thee
swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the
Canaanites, among whom I dwell:
and I will have you
swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not take a wife for my son
from the daughters of the
Canaanites among whom I am dwelling,
And the servant said unto him,
Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto the land
from whence thou camest?
The servant asked him, “What if the woman is unwilling to follow me to this land? Shall I then take your son back to the land from which you came?”
The LORD God of heaven, which took me
from my father’s house, and
from the land of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that
sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son
from thence.
The LORD, the God of heaven, who brought me from my father’s house and my native land, who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give this land’—He will send His angel before you so that you can take a wife for my son from there.
And if the woman will not be willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath: only bring not my son thither again.
And if the woman is unwilling to follow you, then you are released from this oath of mine. Only do not take my son back there.”
