And the men which were expressed by name rose up, and took the
captives, and with the
spoil clothed all that were naked among them, and
arrayed them, and
shod them, and gave them to eat and to drink, and
anointed them, and carried all the feeble of them upon
asses, and brought them to
Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brethren: then they returned to Samaria.
Then the men who were designated by name arose, took charge of the
captives, and provided
from the
plunder clothing for the naked. They clothed them, gave them
sandals and food and drink,
anointed their wounds, and put all the feeble on
donkeys. So they brought them to
Jericho, the City of Palms, to their brothers. Then they returned to Samaria.
At that time did king
Ahaz send unto the kings of Assyria to help him.
At that time King
Ahaz sent for help
from the king of Assyria.
For
Ahaz took away a portion out of the house of the LORD, and out of the house of the king, and of the princes, and gave it unto the king of Assyria: but he helped him not.
Although
Ahaz had taken a portion
from the house of the LORD,
from the royal palace, and
from the princes and had presented it to the king of Assyria, it did not help him.
Now the rest of his acts and of all his ways, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.
As for the rest of the acts of
Ahaz and all his ways,
from beginning to end, they are indeed written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.
For our fathers have
trespassed, and done that which was evil in the eyes of the LORD our God, and have
forsaken him, and have turned away their faces
from the
habitation of the LORD, and turned their backs.
For our fathers were unfaithful and did evil in the sight of the LORD our God. They abandoned Him, turned their faces away from the dwelling place of the LORD, and turned their backs on Him.
Now it is in mine heart to make a covenant with the LORD God of Israel, that his fierce wrath may turn away from us.
Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with the LORD, the God of Israel, so that His fierce anger will turn away from us.
Then the Levites arose, Mahath the son of Amasai, and
Joel the son of
Azariah, of the sons of the Kohathites: and of the sons of Merari,
Kish the son of Abdi, and
Azariah the son of Jehalelel: and of the Gershonites; Joah the son of Zimmah, and
Eden the son of Joah:
Then the Levites set to work: Mahath son of Amasai and
Joel son of
Azariah from the Kohathites;
Kish son of Abdi and
Azariah son of Jehallelel
from the Merarites; Joah son of Zimmah and
Eden son of Joah
from the Gershonites;
And of the sons of Elizaphan; Shimri, and Jeiel: and of the sons of
Asaph;
Zechariah, and Mattaniah:
Shimri and Jeuel
from the Elizaphanites;
Zechariah and Mattaniah
from the Asaphites;
And of the sons of Heman; Jehiel, and Shimei: and of the sons of
Jeduthun; Shemaiah, and Uzziel.
Jehiel and Shimei from the Hemanites; and Shemaiah and Uzziel from the Jeduthunites.
Moreover all the vessels, which king
Ahaz in his reign did cast away in his
transgression, have we prepared and
sanctified, and, behold, they are before the altar of the LORD.
Moreover, we have prepared and consecrated all the articles that King
Ahaz in his unfaithfulness cast aside during his reign. They are now in
front of the altar of the LORD.”
And he set the Levites in the house of the LORD with cymbals, with
psalteries, and with harps, according to the commandment of David, and of
Gad the king’s
seer, and
Nathan the prophet: for so was the commandment of the LORD by his prophets.
Hezekiah stationed the Levites in the house of the LORD with cymbals, harps, and lyres according to the command of David, of
Gad the king’s
seer, and of
Nathan the prophet. For the command had come
from the LORD through His prophets.
So they established a decree to make
proclamation throughout all Israel,
from Beer-
sheba even to
Dan, that they should come to keep the
passover unto the LORD God of Israel at Jerusalem: for they had not done it of a long time in such sort as it was written.
So they established a decree to
circulate a
proclamation throughout Israel,
from Beersheba to
Dan, that the people should come to keep the
Passover of the LORD, the God of Israel, in Jerusalem. For they had not observed it as a nation as prescribed.
So the posts went with the letters
from the king and his princes throughout all Israel and Judah, and according to the commandment of the king, saying, Ye children of Israel, turn again unto the LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, and he will return to the
remnant of you, that are escaped out of the hand of the kings of Assyria.
So the couriers went throughout Israel and Judah with letters
from the king and his officials, which read: “Children of Israel, return to the LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, so that He may return to those of you who remain, who have escaped the
grasp of the kings of Assyria.
Now be ye not stiffnecked, as your fathers were, but yield
yourselves unto the LORD, and enter into his sanctuary, which he hath
sanctified for ever: and serve the LORD your God, that the fierceness of his wrath may turn away
from you.
Now do not
stiffen your necks as your fathers did. Submit to the LORD and come to His sanctuary, which He has consecrated
forever. Serve the LORD your God, so that His fierce anger will turn away
from you.
For if ye turn again unto the LORD, your brethren and your children shall find
compassion before them that lead them
captive, so that they shall come again into this land: for the LORD your God is
gracious and
merciful, and will not turn away his face
from you, if ye return unto him.
For if you return to the LORD, your brothers and sons will receive mercy in the presence of their captors and will return to this land. For the LORD your God is
gracious and
merciful; He will not turn His face away
from you if you return to Him.”
And the couriers traveled
from city to city through the land of Ephraim and
Manasseh as far as
Zebulun; but the people
scorned and
mocked them.
Nevertheless, some
from Asher,
Manasseh, and
Zebulun humbled themselves and came to Jerusalem.
And they stood in their place after their manner, according to the law of Moses the man of God: the priests
sprinkled the blood, which they received of the hand of the Levites.
They stood at their prescribed posts, according to the Law of Moses the man of God. The priests
sprinkled the blood, which they received
from the hand of the Levites.
And all the congregation of Judah, with the priests and the Levites, and all the congregation that came out of Israel, and the strangers that came out of the land of Israel, and that dwelt in Judah,
rejoiced.
Then the whole assembly of Judah
rejoiced along with the priests and Levites and the whole assembly that had come
from Israel, including the foreigners who had come
from Israel and those who lived in Judah.
He appointed also the king’s portion of his substance for the burnt offerings, to wit, for the morning and evening burnt offerings, and the burnt offerings for the sabbaths, and for the new moons, and for the set feasts, as it is written in the law of the LORD.
The king contributed from his own possessions for the regular morning and evening burnt offerings and for the burnt offerings on the Sabbaths, New Moons, and appointed feasts, as written in the Law of the LORD.
Beside their
genealogy of males,
from three years old and upward, even unto every one that entereth into the house of the LORD, his daily portion for their service in their charges according to their courses;
In addition, they distributed portions to the males registered by
genealogy who were three years of age or older—to all who would enter the house of the LORD for their daily duties for service in the responsibilities of their divisions—
Both to the
genealogy of the priests by the house of their fathers, and the Levites
from twenty years old and upward, in their charges by their courses;
and to the priests
enrolled according to their families in the
genealogy, as well as to the Levites twenty years of age or older, according to their duties and divisions.
Is not
Hezekiah misleading you to give you over to death by famine and
thirst when he says, ‘The LORD our God will deliver us
from the hand of the king of Assyria?’
Know ye not what I and my fathers have done unto all the people of other lands? were the gods of the nations of those lands any ways able to deliver their lands out of mine hand?
Do you not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? Have the gods of these nations ever been able to deliver their land from my hand?
Who was there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of mine hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of mine hand?
Who among all the gods of these nations that my fathers devoted to destruction has been able to deliver his people from my hand? How then can your God deliver you from my hand?
Now therefore let not
Hezekiah deceive you, nor
persuade you on this manner, neither yet believe him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of mine hand?
So now, do not let
Hezekiah deceive you, and do not let him mislead you like this. Do not believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people
from my hand or
from the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God deliver you
from my hand!”
He wrote also letters to rail on the LORD God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their people out of mine hand, so shall not the God of
Hezekiah deliver his people out of mine hand.
He also wrote letters
mocking the LORD, the God of Israel, and saying against Him: “Just as the gods of the nations did not deliver their people
from my hand, so the God of
Hezekiah will not deliver His people
from my hand.”
Thus the LORD saved
Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem
from the hand of
Sennacherib the king of Assyria, and
from the hand of all other, and guided them on every side.
So the LORD saved
Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem
from the hands of King
Sennacherib of Assyria and all the others, and He gave them rest on every side.
And many brought gifts unto the LORD to Jerusalem, and presents to
Hezekiah king of Judah: so that he was
magnified in the sight of all nations
from thenceforth.
Many brought offerings to Jerusalem for the LORD and valuable gifts for
Hezekiah king of Judah, and
from then on he was
exalted in the eyes of all nations.
Neither will I any more remove the foot of Israel
from out of the land which I have appointed for your fathers; so that they will take
heed to do all that I have commanded them, according to the whole law and the statutes and the ordinances by the hand of Moses.
I will never again cause the feet of the Israelites to leave the land that I assigned to your fathers, if only they are careful to do all that I have commanded them through Moses—all the laws, statutes, and judgments.”
Now after this he built a wall without the city of David, on the west side of
Gihon, in the valley, even to the entering in at the fish gate, and compassed about Ophel, and raised it up a very great height, and put captains of war in all the
fenced cities of Judah.
After this,
Manasseh rebuilt the outer wall of the City of David
from west of
Gihon in the valley to the entrance of the Fish Gate, and he brought it around the hill of Ophel and
heightened it considerably. He also stationed military commanders in all the fortified cities of Judah.
And he took away the strange gods, and the
idol out of the house of the LORD, and all the altars that he had built in the mount of the house of the LORD, and in Jerusalem, and cast them out of the city.
He removed the foreign gods and the
idol from the house of the LORD, along with all the altars he had built on the temple mount and in Jerusalem, and he
dumped them outside the city.
For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the
twelfth year he began to
purge Judah and Jerusalem
from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the
molten images.
In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young,
Josiah began to seek the God of his father David, and in the
twelfth year he began to
cleanse Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the Asherah poles, the carved idols, and the cast images.
And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest, they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of
Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the
remnant of Israel, and of all Judah and Benjamin; and they returned to Jerusalem.
So they went to Hilkiah the high priest and gave him the money that had been brought into the house of God, which the Levites at the doors had collected
from the people of
Manasseh and Ephraim,
from all the
remnant of Israel, Judah, and Benjamin, and
from the people of Jerusalem.
And
Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that
pertained to the children of Israel, and made all that were present in Israel to serve, even to serve the LORD their God. And all his days they departed not
from following the LORD, the God of their fathers.
And
Josiah removed all the abominations
from all the lands belonging to the Israelites, and he required
everyone in Israel to serve the LORD their God. Throughout his reign they did not turn aside
from following the LORD, the God of their fathers.
And
Josiah gave to the people, of the flock, lambs and kids, all for the
passover offerings, for all that were present, to the number of thirty thousand, and three thousand bullocks: these were of the king’s substance.
From his own flocks and herds
Josiah contributed 30,000 lambs and goats
plus 3,000 bulls for the
Passover offerings for all the people who were present.
And they slaughtered the
Passover lambs, while the priests
sprinkled the blood handed to them and the Levites
skinned the animals.
And the singers the sons of
Asaph were in their place, according to the commandment of David, and
Asaph, and Heman, and
Jeduthun the king’s
seer; and the
porters waited at every gate; they might not depart
from their service; for their brethren the Levites prepared for them.
The singers, the descendants of
Asaph, were at their stations according to the command of David,
Asaph, Heman, and
Jeduthun the king’s
seer. And the gatekeepers at each gate did not need to leave their position, because their fellow Levites made preparations for them.
And there was no
passover like to that kept in Israel
from the days of Samuel the prophet; neither did all the kings of Israel keep such a
passover as
Josiah kept, and the priests, and the Levites, and all Judah and Israel that were present, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
No such
Passover had been observed in Israel since the days of Samuel the prophet. None of the kings of Israel ever observed a
Passover like the one that
Josiah observed with the priests, the Levites, all Judah, the Israelites who were present, and the people of Jerusalem.
But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, What have I to do with thee, thou king of Judah? I come not against thee this day, but against the house
wherewith I have war: for God commanded me to make
haste:
forbear thee
from meddling with God, who is with me, that he destroy thee not.
But Neco sent messengers to him, saying, “What is the issue between you and me, O king of Judah? I have not come against you
today, but I am fighting another dynasty. God told me to
hurry; so stop
opposing God, who is with me, or He will destroy you!”
Nevertheless
Josiah would not turn his face
from him, but
disguised himself, that he might fight with him, and
hearkened not unto the words of
Necho from the mouth of God, and came to fight in the valley of
Megiddo.
Josiah, however, did not turn away
from him; instead, in order to
engage him in battle, he
disguised himself. He did not
listen to Neco’s words
from the mouth of God, but went to fight him on the Plain of
Megiddo.
And his deeds, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah.
his acts from beginning to end—they are indeed written in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah.
Nebuchadnezzar also carried of the vessels of the house of the LORD to Babylon, and put them in his temple at Babylon.
Nebuchadnezzar also took to Babylon some of the articles
from the house of the LORD, and he put them in his temple in Babylon.
And when the year was
expired, king
Nebuchadnezzar sent, and brought him to Babylon, with the goodly vessels of the house of the LORD, and made
Zedekiah his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem.
In the spring, King
Nebuchadnezzar summoned
Jehoiachin and brought him to Babylon, along with the articles of value
from the house of the LORD. And he made
Jehoiachin’s relative
Zedekiah king over Judah and Jerusalem.
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD his God, and humbled not himself before Jeremiah the prophet speaking from the mouth of the LORD.
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD his God and did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet, who spoke for the LORD.
And them that had escaped from the sword carried he away to Babylon; where they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia:
Those who escaped the sword were carried by
Nebuchadnezzar into exile in Babylon, and they became servants to him and his sons until the kingdom of Persia came to power.
Also Cyrus the king brought forth the vessels of the house of the LORD, which
Nebuchadnezzar had brought forth out of Jerusalem, and had put them in the house of his gods;
King Cyrus also brought out the articles belonging to the house of the LORD that
Nebuchadnezzar had carried away
from Jerusalem and placed in the temple of his gods.
All the vessels of gold and of silver were five thousand and four hundred. All these did Sheshbazzar bring up with them of the captivity that were brought up from Babylon unto Jerusalem.
In all, there were 5,400 gold and silver articles. Sheshbazzar brought all these along when the exiles went up from Babylon to Jerusalem.
Now these are the children of the province that went up out of the captivity, of those which had been carried away, whom
Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away unto Babylon, and came again unto Jerusalem and Judah, every one unto his city;
Now these are the people of the province who came up
from the captivity of the exiles carried away to Babylon by
Nebuchadnezzar its king. They returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town,
And these were they which went up
from Tel-melah, Tel-harsa,
Cherub, Addan, and Immer: but they could not
shew their father’s house, and their seed, whether they were of Israel:
The following came up
from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha,
Cherub, Addan, and Immer, but could not prove that their families were descended
from Israel:
And of the children of the priests: the children of Habaiah, the children of Koz, the children of Barzillai; which took a wife of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called after their name:
And from among the priests: the descendants of Hobaiah, the descendants of Hakkoz, and the descendants of Barzillai (who had married a daughter of Barzillai the Gileadite and was called by their name).
These sought their register among those that were reckoned by
genealogy, but they were not found: therefore were they, as
polluted, put
from the priesthood.
These men searched for their family records, but they could not find them and so were excluded from the priesthood as unclean.
From the first day of the seventh month began they to offer burnt offerings unto the LORD. But the foundation of the temple of the LORD was not yet laid.
On the first day of the seventh month, the Israelites began to offer burnt offerings to the LORD, although the foundation of the temple of the LORD had not been laid.
They gave money also unto the masons, and to the carpenters; and meat, and drink, and oil, unto them of Zidon, and to them of Tyre, to bring
cedar trees
from Lebanon to the sea of
Joppa, according to the grant that they had of Cyrus king of Persia.
They gave money to the masons and carpenters, and food and drink and oil to the people of
Sidon and Tyre to bring
cedar logs
from Lebanon to
Joppa by sea, as authorized by Cyrus king of Persia.
Now in the second year of their coming unto the house of God at Jerusalem, in the second month, began
Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and the
remnant of their brethren the priests and the Levites, and all they that were come out of the captivity unto Jerusalem; and appointed the Levites,
from twenty years old and upward, to set forward the work of the house of the LORD.
In the second month of the second year after they had arrived at the house of God in Jerusalem,
Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Jeshua son of Jozadak, and the rest of their associates including the priests, the Levites, and all who had returned to Jerusalem
from the captivity, began the work. They appointed Levites twenty years of age or older to
supervise the construction of the house of the LORD.
So that the people could not
discern the noise of the
shout of joy
from the noise of the
weeping of the people: for the people
shouted with a loud
shout, and the noise was heard
afar off.
The people could not distinguish the shouts of joy
from the sound of
weeping, because the people were making so much noise. And the sound was heard
from afar.
Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the
scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,
From Rehum the commander, Shimshai the
scribe, and the rest of their associates—the judges and officials over Tripolis, Persia, Erech and Babylon, the Elamites of
Susa,
This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto
Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.
(This is the text of the letter they sent to him.) To King
Artaxerxes,
From your servants, the men west of the Euphrates:
Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up
from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the
rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.
Let it be known to the king that the Jews who came
from you to us have returned to Jerusalem. And they are rebuilding that
rebellious and wicked city, restoring its walls, and repairing its foundations.
Now because we have maintenance
from the king’s palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king’s dishonour, therefore have we sent and
certified the king;
Now because we are in the service of the palace and it is not fitting for us to allow the king to be dishonored, we have sent to inform the king
That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a
rebellious city, and
hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved
sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.
that a search should be made of the record books of your fathers. In these books you will discover and
verify that the city is a
rebellious city,
harmful to kings and provinces,
inciting sedition from ancient times. That is why this city was destroyed.
And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and
sedition have been made therein.
I issued a decree, and a search was conducted. It was discovered that this city has revolted against kings
from ancient times,
engaging in rebellion and
sedition.
Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me.
Now, therefore, issue an order for these men to stop, so that this city will not be rebuilt until I so order.
Now when the copy of king
Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the
scribe, and their companions, they went up in
haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.
When the text of the letter
from King
Artaxerxes was read to Rehum, Shimshai the
scribe, and their associates, they went immediately to the Jews in Jerusalem and
forcibly stopped them.
And the vessels also of gold and silver of the house of God, which
Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought them into the temple of Babylon, those did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered unto one, whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor;
He also removed
from the temple of Babylon the gold and silver articles belonging to the house of God, which
Nebuchadnezzar had taken and carried there
from the temple in Jerusalem. King Cyrus gave these articles to a man named Sheshbazzar, whom he appointed governor
Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundation of the house of God which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not finished.
So this Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundation of the house of God in Jerusalem, and from that time until now it has been under construction, but it has not yet been completed.”
With three rows of great stones, and a row of new timber: and let the expences be given out of the king’s house:
with three layers of cut stones and one of timbers. The costs are to be paid from the royal treasury.
And also let the golden and silver vessels of the house of God, which
Nebuchadnezzar took forth out of the temple which is at Jerusalem, and brought unto Babylon, be restored, and brought again unto the temple which is at Jerusalem, every one to his place, and place them in the house of God.
Furthermore, the gold and silver articles of the house of God, which
Nebuchadnezzar took
from the temple in Jerusalem and carried to Babylon, must also be returned to the temple in Jerusalem and deposited in the house of God.
Now therefore, Tatnai, governor beyond the river, Shethar-boznai, and your companions the
Apharsachites, which are beyond the river, be ye far
from thence:
Therefore
Darius decreed: To Tattenai governor of the region west of the Euphrates, Shethar-bozenai, and your associates and officials in the region: You must stay away
from that place!
Moreover I make a decree what ye shall do to the elders of these Jews for the building of this house of God: that of the king’s goods, even of the tribute beyond the river,
forthwith expenses be given unto these men, that they be not hindered.
I
hereby decree what you must do for these elders of the Jews who are rebuilding this house of God: The cost is to be paid in full to these men
from the royal treasury out of the taxes of the provinces west of the Euphrates, so that the work will not be hindered.
Also I have made a decree, that
whosoever shall alter this word, let timber be pulled down
from his house, and being set up, let him be
hanged thereon; and let his house be made a
dunghill for this.
I also decree that if any man interferes with this directive, a beam is to be
torn from his house and raised up, and he is to be impaled on it. And his own house shall be made a pile of
rubble for this
offense.
And the children of Israel, which were come again out of captivity, and all such as had separated themselves unto them
from the
filthiness of the heathen of the land, to seek the LORD God of Israel, did eat,
The Israelites who had returned
from exile
ate it, together with all who had separated themselves
from the uncleanness of the peoples of the land to seek the LORD, the God of Israel.
This
Ezra went up
from Babylon; and he was a ready
scribe in the law of Moses, which the LORD God of Israel had given: and the king granted him all his request, according to the hand of the LORD his God upon him.
this
Ezra came up
from Babylon. He was a
scribe skilled in the Law of Moses, which the LORD, the God of Israel, had given. The king had granted
Ezra all his requests, for the hand of the LORD his God was upon him.
For upon the first day of the first month began he to go up from Babylon, and on the first day of the fifth month came he to Jerusalem, according to the good hand of his God upon him.
He had begun the journey
from Babylon on the first day of the first month, and he arrived in Jerusalem on the first day of the fifth month, for the
gracious hand of his God was upon him.
And if anything else is needed for the house of your God that you may have occasion to supply, you may pay for it from the royal treasury.
These are now the chief of their fathers, and this is the
genealogy of them that went up with me
from Babylon, in the reign of
Artaxerxes the king.
These are the family heads and
genealogical records of those who returned with me
from Babylon during the reign of King
Artaxerxes:
Of the sons of
Phinehas; Gershom: of the sons of
Ithamar; Daniel: of the sons of David; Hattush.
from the descendants of
Phinehas, Gershom;
from the descendants of
Ithamar, Daniel;
Of the sons of Shechaniah, of the sons of Pharosh;
Zechariah: and with him were reckoned by
genealogy of the males an hundred and fifty.
from the descendants of David, Hattush of the descendants of Shecaniah;
from the descendants of Parosh,
Zechariah, and with him were registered 150 men;
Of the sons of Pahath-moab; Elihoenai the son of Zerahiah, and with him two hundred males.
from the descendants of Pahath-Moab, Eliehoenai son of Zerahiah, and with him 200 men;
Of the sons of Shechaniah; the son of Jahaziel, and with him three hundred males.
from the descendants of Zattu, Shecaniah son of Jahaziel, and with him 300 men;
Of the sons also of Adin; Ebed the son of
Jonathan, and with him fifty males.
from the descendants of Adin, Ebed son of
Jonathan, and with him 50 men;
And of the sons of
Elam; Jeshaiah the son of
Athaliah, and with him seventy males.
from the descendants of
Elam, Jeshaiah son of
Athaliah, and with him 70 men;
And of the sons of Shephatiah; Zebadiah the son of Michael, and with him
fourscore males.
from the descendants of Shephatiah, Zebadiah son of Michael, and with him 80 men;
Of the sons of
Joab;
Obadiah the son of Jehiel, and with him two hundred and eighteen males.
from the descendants of
Joab,
Obadiah son of Jehiel, and with him 218 men;
And of the sons of Shelomith; the son of Josiphiah, and with him an hundred and
threescore males.
from the descendants of Bani, Shelomith son of Josiphiah, and with him 160 men;
And of the sons of Bebai;
Zechariah the son of Bebai, and with him twenty and eight males.
from the descendants of Bebai,
Zechariah son of Bebai, and with him 28 men;
And of the sons of Azgad; Johanan the son of Hakkatan, and with him an hundred and ten males.
from the descendants of Azgad, Johanan son of Hakkatan, and with him 110 men;
And of the last sons of Adonikam, whose names are these, Eliphelet, Jeiel, and Shemaiah, and with them
threescore males.
from the later descendants of Adonikam, these were their names: Eliphelet, Jeiel, and Shemaiah, and with them 60 men;
Of the sons also of Bigvai; Uthai, and Zabbud, and with them seventy males.
and from the descendants of Bigvai, both Uthai and Zaccur, and with them 70 men.
And by the good hand of our God upon us they brought us a man of understanding, of the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel; and Sherebiah, with his sons and his brethren, eighteen;
And since the
gracious hand of our God was upon us, they brought us Sherebiah—a man of insight
from the descendants of Mahli son of Levi, the son of Israel—along with his sons and brothers, 18 men;
And Hashabiah, and with him Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari, his brethren and their sons, twenty;
also Hashabiah, together with Jeshaiah, from the descendants of Merari, and his brothers and their sons, 20 men.
For I was
ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and
horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that
forsake him.
For I was
ashamed to ask the king for an
escort of soldiers and
horsemen to protect us
from our enemies on the road, since we had told him, “The hand of our God is
gracious to all who seek Him, but His great anger is against all who
forsake Him.”
Then we departed
from the river of
Ahava on the
twelfth day of the first month, to go unto Jerusalem: and the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us
from the hand of the enemy, and of such as lay in wait by the way.
On the
twelfth day of the first month we set out
from the
Ahava Canal to go to Jerusalem, and the hand of our God was upon us to protect us
from the hands of the enemies and
bandits along the way.
Also the children of those that had been carried away, which were come out of the captivity, offered burnt offerings unto the God of Israel, twelve bullocks for all Israel,
ninety and six rams, seventy and seven lambs, twelve he goats for a sin offering: all this was a burnt offering unto the LORD.
Then the exiles who had returned from captivity sacrificed burnt offerings to the God of Israel: 12 bulls for all Israel, 96 rams, 77 lambs, and a sin offering of 12 male goats. All this was a burnt offering to the LORD.

Canaanites, the
Hittites, the
Perizzites, the Jebusites, the
Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the
Amorites.
After these things had been accomplished, the leaders approached me and said, “The people of Israel, including the priests and Levites, have not kept themselves separate
from the surrounding peoples whose abominations are like those of the
Canaanites,
Hittites,
Perizzites, Jebusites,
Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians, and
Amorites.
And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my
mantle, and
plucked off the hair of my head and of my
beard, and sat down
astonied.
And at the evening sacrifice I arose up
from my
heaviness; and having rent my garment and my
mantle, I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto the LORD my God.
At the evening offering, I got up
from my
humiliation with my
tunic and
cloak torn, and I fell on my knees, spread out my hands to the LORD my God,
