And now, O LORD my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.
And now, O LORD my God, You have made Your servant king in my father David’s place. But I am only a little child, not knowing how to go out or come in.
And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.
Your servant is here among the people You have chosen, a people too numerous to count or number.
And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for
thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for
thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for
thyself understanding to
discern judgment;
So God said to him, “Since you
have asked for this instead of requesting long life or wealth for
yourself or death for your enemies—but you
have asked for
discernment to
administer justice—
Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.
behold, I will do what you
have asked. I will give you a wise and
discerning heart, so that there has never been nor will ever be another like you.
And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days.
Moreover, I will give you what you did not request—both riches and honor—so that during all your days no man in any kingdom will be your equal.
And
Hiram sent to Solomon, saying, I
have considered the things which thou sentest to me for: and I will do all thy desire concerning timber of
cedar, and concerning timber of
fir.
Then
Hiram sent a reply to Solomon, saying: “I
have received your message; I will do all you desire regarding the
cedar and
cypress timber.
I
have surely built thee an house to dwell in, a settled place for thee to
abide in for ever.
I
have indeed built You an
exalted house, a place for You to dwell
forever.”
Since the day that I brought forth my people Israel out of Egypt, I chose no city out of all the tribes of Israel to build an house, that my name might be therein; but I chose David to be over my people Israel.
‘Since the day I brought My people Israel out of Egypt, I have not chosen a city from any tribe of Israel in which to build a house so that My Name would be there. But I have chosen David to be over My people Israel.’
And the LORD said unto David my father, Whereas it was in thine heart to build an house unto my name, thou
didst well that it was in thine heart.
But the LORD said to my father David, ‘Since it was in your heart to build a house for My Name, you have done well to have this in your heart.
And the LORD hath performed his word that he spake, and I am risen up in the room of David my father, and sit on the throne of Israel, as the LORD promised, and have built an house for the name of the LORD God of Israel.
Now the LORD has fulfilled the word that He spoke. I have succeeded my father David, and I sit on the throne of Israel, as the LORD promised. I have built the house for the Name of the LORD, the God of Israel.
And I have set there a place for the ark, wherein is the covenant of the LORD, which he made with our fathers, when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.
And there I have provided a place for the ark, which contains the covenant of the LORD that He made with our fathers when He brought them out of the land of Egypt.”
Who hast kept with thy servant David my father that thou promisedst him: thou spakest also with thy mouth, and hast fulfilled it with thine hand, as it is this day.
You have kept Your promise to Your servant, my father David. What You spoke with Your mouth You have fulfilled with Your hand this day.
Therefore now, LORD God of Israel, keep with thy servant David my father that thou promisedst him, saying, There shall not fail thee a man in my sight to sit on the throne of Israel; so that thy children take
heed to their way, that they walk before me as thou hast walked before me.
Therefore now, O LORD, God of Israel, keep for Your servant, my father David, what You promised when You said: ‘You will never fail to have a man to sit before Me on the throne of Israel, if only your descendants guard their way to walk before Me as you have done.’
But will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded?
But will God indeed dwell upon the earth? Even heaven, the highest heaven, cannot contain You, much less this temple I have built.
Yet
have thou respect unto the prayer of thy servant, and to his
supplication, O LORD my God, to
hearken unto the cry and to the prayer, which thy servant prayeth before thee to day:
Yet regard the prayer and
plea of Your servant, O LORD my God, so that You may hear the cry and the prayer that Your servant is praying before You
today.
When thy people Israel be
smitten down before the enemy, because they
have sinned against thee, and shall turn again to thee, and
confess thy name, and pray, and make
supplication unto thee in this house:
When Your people Israel are defeated before an enemy because they
have sinned against You, and they return to You and
confess Your name, praying and
pleading with You in this temple,
When heaven is shut up, and there is no rain, because they
have sinned against thee; if they pray toward this place, and
confess thy name, and turn from their sin, when thou afflictest them:
When the
skies are shut and there is no rain because Your people
have sinned against You, and they pray toward this place and
confess Your name, and they turn from their sins because You
have afflicted them,
Hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and do according to all that the stranger calleth to thee for: that all people of the earth may know thy name, to fear thee, as do thy people Israel; and that they may know that this house, which I have builded, is called by thy name.
then may You hear from heaven, Your dwelling place, and do according to all for which the foreigner calls to You. Then all the peoples of the earth will know Your name and fear You, as do Your people Israel, and they will know that this house I have built is called by Your Name.
If thy people go out to battle against their enemy,
whithersoever thou shalt send them, and shall pray unto the LORD toward the city which thou hast chosen, and toward the house that I
have built for thy name:
When Your people go to war against their enemies, wherever You send them, and when they pray to the LORD in the direction of the city You have chosen and the house I have built for Your Name,
and when they come to their senses in the land to which they were taken, and they
repent and
plead with You in the land of their captors, saying, ‘We
have sinned and done wrong; we
have acted wickedly,’
And so return unto thee with all their heart, and with all their soul, in the land of their enemies, which led them away
captive, and pray unto thee toward their land, which thou gavest unto their fathers, the city which thou hast chosen, and the house which I
have built for thy name:
and when they return to You with all their heart and soul in the land of the enemies who took them
captive, and when they pray to You in the direction of the land that You gave to their fathers, the city You
have chosen, and the house I
have built for Your Name,
May You
forgive Your people who
have sinned against You and all the transgressions they
have committed against You, and may You grant them
compassion in the eyes of their captors to show them mercy.
For thou
didst separate them from among all the people of the earth, to be thine inheritance, as thou spakest by the hand of Moses thy servant, when thou broughtest our fathers out of Egypt, O Lord GOD.
For You, O Lord GOD, as Your inheritance, have set them apart from all the peoples of the earth, as You spoke through Your servant Moses when You brought our fathers out of Egypt.”
And let these my words,
wherewith I
have made
supplication before the LORD, be
nigh unto the LORD our God day and night, that he maintain the cause of his servant, and the cause of his people Israel at all times, as the matter shall require:
And may these words with which I
have made my petition before the LORD be near to the LORD our God day and night, so that He may
uphold the cause of His servant and of His people Israel as each day requires,
And the LORD said unto him, I
have heard thy prayer and thy
supplication, that thou hast made before me: I
have hallowed this house, which thou hast built, to put my name there for ever; and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually.
And the LORD said to him: “I
have heard your prayer and petition before Me. I
have consecrated this temple you
have built by putting My Name there
forever; My eyes and My heart will be there for all time.
And if thou
wilt walk before me, as David thy father walked, in
integrity of heart, and in uprightness, to do according to all that I
have commanded thee, and
wilt keep my statutes and my judgments:
And as for you, if you walk before Me as your father David walked, with a heart of
integrity and uprightness, doing all I
have commanded you, and if you keep My statutes and ordinances,
Then I will establish the throne of thy kingdom upon Israel for ever, as I promised to David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man upon the throne of Israel.
then I will establish your royal throne over Israel
forever, as I promised your father David when I said, ‘You will never fail to
have a man on the throne of Israel.’
But if ye shall at all turn from following me, ye or your children, and will not keep my commandments and my statutes which I have set before you, but go and serve other gods, and worship them:
But if indeed you or your sons turn away from following Me and do not keep the commandments and statutes I have set before you, and if you go off to serve and worship other gods,
Then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I
have given them; and this house, which I
have hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a
proverb and a
byword among all people:
then I will cut off Israel from the land that I
have given them, and I will
banish from My presence this temple I
have sanctified for My Name. Then Israel will become an object of
scorn and
ridicule among all peoples.
And they shall answer, Because they
forsook the LORD their God, who brought forth their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and
have taken hold upon other gods, and
have worshipped them, and served them: therefore hath the LORD brought upon them all this evil.
And others will answer, ‘Because they
have forsaken the LORD their God who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and
have embraced other gods, worshiping and serving them—because of this, the LORD has brought all this
disaster upon them.’”
And he said, What cities are these which thou hast given me, my brother? And he called them the land of
Cabul unto this day.
“What are these towns you
have given me, my brother?” asked
Hiram, and he called them the Land of
Cabul, as they are called to this day.
Howbeit I believed not the words, until I came, and mine eyes had seen it: and, behold, the half was not told me: thy wisdom and prosperity exceedeth the fame which I heard.
But I did not believe these things until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half was told to me. Your wisdom and prosperity have far exceeded the report I heard.
Wherefore the LORD said unto Solomon,
Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I
have commanded thee, I will surely
rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant.
Then the LORD said to Solomon, “Because you
have done this and
have not kept My covenant and My statutes, which I
have commanded you, I will
tear the kingdom away from you and give it to your servant.
Howbeit I will not
rend away all the kingdom; but will give one tribe to thy son for David my servant’s sake, and for Jerusalem’s sake which I
have chosen.
Yet I will not
tear the whole kingdom away from him. I will give one tribe to your son for the sake of My servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I
have chosen.”
Then Pharaoh said unto him, But what hast thou lacked with me, that, behold, thou seekest to go to thine own country? And he answered, Nothing:
howbeit let me go in any wise.
But Pharaoh asked him, “What
have you lacked here with me that you suddenly want to go back to your own country?” “Nothing,”
Hadad replied, “but please let me go.”
(But he shall have one tribe for my servant David’s sake, and for Jerusalem’s sake, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel:)
But one tribe will remain for the sake of My servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel.
Because that they
have forsaken me, and
have worshipped
Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians,
Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Milcom the god of the children of
Ammon, and
have not walked in my ways, to do that which is right in mine eyes, and to keep my statutes and my judgments, as did David his father.
For they
have forsaken Me to worship
Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians,
Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Milcom the god of the
Ammonites. They
have not walked in My ways, nor done what is right in My eyes, nor kept My statutes and judgments, as Solomon’s father David did.
Howbeit I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand: but I will make him prince all the days of his life for David my servant’s sake, whom I chose, because he kept my commandments and my statutes:
Nevertheless, I will not take the whole kingdom out of Solomon’s hand, because I have made him ruler all the days of his life for the sake of David My servant, whom I chose because he kept My commandments and statutes.
And unto his son will I give one tribe, that David my servant may
have a light
alway before me in Jerusalem, the city which I
have chosen me to put my name there.
I will give one tribe to his son, so that My servant David will always have a lamp before Me in Jerusalem, the city where I chose to put My Name.
And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter?
He asked them, “What message do you
advise that we send back to these people who
have spoken to me, saying, ‘
Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?”
So when all Israel saw that the king
hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion
have we in David? neither
have we inheritance in the son of
Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.
When all Israel saw that the king had refused to
listen to them, they answered the king: “What portion do we
have in David, and what inheritance in the son of
Jesse? To your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, O David!” So the Israelites went home,
For it was said to me by the word of the LORD, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.
For I have been told by the word of the LORD: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water there or return by the way you came.’”
And he
cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD,
Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the LORD thy God commanded thee,
and the prophet
cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because you
have defied the word of the LORD and
have not kept the commandment that the LORD your God gave you,
And it was so, when
Ahijah heard the sound of her feet as she came in at the door, that he said, Come in, thou wife of
Jeroboam; why feignest thou
thyself to be another? for I am sent to thee with heavy
tidings.
So when
Ahijah heard the sound of her feet entering the door, he said, “Come in, wife of
Jeroboam! Why are you
disguised? For I
have been sent to you with bad news.
But hast done evil above all that were before thee: for thou hast gone and made thee other gods, and
molten images, to
provoke me to anger, and hast cast me behind thy back:
You
have done more evil than all who came before you. You
have proceeded to make for
yourself other gods and
molten images to
provoke Me, and you
have flung Me behind your back.
For the LORD shall
smite Israel, as a reed is
shaken in the water, and he shall root up Israel out of this good land, which he gave to their fathers, and shall
scatter them beyond the river, because they
have made their groves,
provoking the LORD to anger.
For the LORD will strike Israel as a reed is
shaken in the water. He will
uproot Israel from this good land that He gave their fathers, and He will
scatter them beyond the Euphrates, because they
have made their Asherah poles,
provoking the LORD to anger.
There is a league between me and thee, and between my father and thy father: behold, I
have sent unto thee a present of silver and gold; come and break thy league with
Baasha king of Israel, that he may depart from me.
“Let there be a treaty between me and you, between my father and your father. See, I
have sent you a gift of silver and gold. Now go and break your treaty with
Baasha king of Israel, so that he will withdraw from me.”
Forasmuch as I
exalted thee out of the dust, and made thee prince over my people Israel; and thou hast walked in the way of
Jeroboam, and hast made my people Israel to sin, to
provoke me to anger with their sins;
“Even though I lifted you out of the dust and made you ruler over My people Israel, you
have walked in the way of
Jeroboam and
have caused My people Israel to sin and to
provoke Me to anger by their sins.
And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the
brook; and I
have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.
And you are to drink from the
brook, and I
have commanded the ravens to feed you there.”
Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I
have commanded a widow woman there to
sustain thee.
“Get up and go to Zarephath of
Sidon, and stay there. Behold, I
have commanded a widow there to provide for you.”
And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I
have not a
cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a
cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.
But she replied, “As surely as the LORD your God lives, I
have no bread—only a handful of flour in a
jar and a little oil in a
jug. Look, I am gathering a couple of sticks to take home and prepare a meal for myself and my son, so that we may eat it and die.”
And
Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little
cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.
“Do not be afraid,”
Elijah said to her. “Go and do as you
have said. But first make me a small
cake of bread from what you
have, and bring it out to me. Afterward, make some for
yourself and your son,
And she said unto
Elijah, What
have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to
remembrance, and to
slay my son?
“O man of God,” said the woman to
Elijah, “what
have you done to me?
Have you come to remind me of my iniquity and cause the death of my son?”
And he
cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I
sojourn, by
slaying her son?
Then he
cried out to the LORD, “O LORD my God,
have You also brought tragedy on this widow who has opened her home to me, by causing her son to die?”
And
Ahab said unto
Obadiah, Go into the land, unto all fountains of water, and unto all
brooks:
peradventure we may find grass to save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.
Then
Ahab said to
Obadiah, “Go throughout the land to every spring and every valley. Perhaps we will find grass to keep the horses and mules alive so that we will not
have to destroy any
livestock.”
And he said, What
have I
sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of
Ahab, to
slay me?
But
Obadiah replied, “How
have I
sinned, that you are handing your servant over to
Ahab to put me to death?
And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of the LORD shall carry thee
whither I know not; and so when I come and tell
Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall
slay me: but I thy servant fear the LORD from my youth.
I do not know where the Spirit of the LORD may carry you off when I leave you. Then when I go and tell
Ahab and he does not find you, he will kill me. But I, your servant,
have feared the LORD from my youth.
And he answered, I
have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye
have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed
Baalim.
“I
have not troubled Israel,”
Elijah replied, “but you and your father’s house
have, for you
have forsaken the commandments of the LORD and
have followed the Baals.
And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that
Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I
have done all these things at thy word.
At the time of the evening sacrifice,
Elijah the prophet approached the altar and said, “O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel and that I am Your servant and
have done all these things at Your command.
Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.
Answer me, O LORD! Answer me, so that this people will know that You, the LORD, are God, and that You have turned their hearts back again.”
But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a
juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.
while he himself traveled on a day’s journey into the wilderness. He sat down under a
broom tree and prayed that he might die. “I
have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers.”
And he said, I
have been very
jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel
have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
“I
have been very
zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts,” he replied, “but the Israelites
have forsaken Your covenant,
torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well.”
And he said, I
have been very
jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel
have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
“I
have been very
zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts,” he replied, “but the Israelites
have forsaken Your covenant,
torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well.”
Yet I
have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which
have not bowed unto
Baal, and every mouth which hath not
kissed him.
Nevertheless, I
have reserved seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees
have not bowed to
Baal and whose mouths
have not
kissed him.”
And he left the oxen, and ran after
Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee,
kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again: for what
have I done to thee?
So
Elisha left the oxen, ran after
Elijah, and said, “Please let me
kiss my father and mother goodbye, and then I will follow you.” “Go on back,”
Elijah replied, “for what
have I done to you?”
And the king of Israel answered and said, My lord, O king, according to thy saying, I am thine, and all that I have.
And the king of Israel replied, “Just as you say, my lord the king: I am yours, along with all that I have.”
And the messengers came again, and said, Thus speaketh Ben-
hadad, saying, Although I
have sent unto thee, saying, Thou shalt deliver me thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy children;
The messengers came back and said, “This is what Ben-
hadad says: ‘I
have sent to you to demand your silver, your gold, your wives, and your children.
And Ben-
hadad sent unto him, and said, The gods do so unto me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people that follow me.
Then Ben-
hadad sent another message to
Ahab: “May the gods deal with me, and ever so severely, if enough dust remains of Samaria for each of my men to
have a handful.”
And he said, Whether they be come out for peace, take them alive; or whether they be come out for war, take them alive.
“If they have marched out in peace,” he said, “take them alive. Even if they have marched out for war, take them alive.”
And number thee an army, like the army that thou hast lost, horse for horse, and
chariot for
chariot: and we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. And he
hearkened unto their voice, and did so.
And you must raise an army like the one you
have lost—horse for horse and
chariot for
chariot—so we can fight the Israelites on the plain, where we will surely prevail.” And the king approved their plan and acted accordingly.
And there came a man of God, and spake unto the king of Israel, and said, Thus saith the LORD, Because the Syrians have said, The LORD is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
Then the man of God approached the king of Israel and said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because the Arameans think the LORD is a god of the hills and not of the valleys, I will deliver all this great army into your hand. Then you will know that I am the LORD.’”
And his servants said unto him, Behold now, we
have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are
merciful kings: let us, I pray thee, put
sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel:
peradventure he will save thy life.
Then the servants of Ben-
hadad said to him, “Look now, we
have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are
merciful. Let us go out to the king of Israel with
sackcloth around our waists and ropes around our heads. Perhaps he will
spare your life.”
Then said he unto him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voice of the LORD, behold, as soon as thou art departed from me, a lion shall
slay thee. And as soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and
slew him.
Then the prophet said to him, “Because you have not obeyed the voice of the LORD, as soon as you depart from me a lion will kill you.” And when he left, a lion found him and killed him.
And as thy servant was
busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Israel said unto him, So shall thy judgment be;
thyself hast decided it.
But while your servant was
busy here and there, the man disappeared.” And the king of Israel said to him, “So shall your judgment be; you
have pronounced it on
yourself.”
And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Because thou hast let go out of thy hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy people for his people.
And the prophet said to the king, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because you have let slip from your hand the man I had devoted to destruction, your life will be exchanged for his life, and your people for his people.’”
And
Ahab spake unto
Naboth, saying, Give me thy
vineyard, that I may
have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near unto my house: and I will give thee for it a better
vineyard than it; or, if it seem good to thee, I will give thee the worth of it in money.
So
Ahab said to
Naboth, “Give me your
vineyard to use as a vegetable garden, since it is next to my palace. I will give you a better
vineyard in its place—or if you
prefer, I will give you its value in silver.”
And set two men, sons of
Belial, before him, to bear witness against him, saying, Thou
didst blaspheme God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him, that he may die.
But seat two scoundrels opposite him and
have them
testify, ‘You
have cursed both God and the king!’ Then take him out and stone him to death.”
And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou killed, and also taken possession? And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, In the place where dogs
licked the blood of
Naboth shall dogs
lick thy blood, even thine.
Tell him that this is what the LORD says: ‘
Have you not murdered a man and seized his land?’ Then tell him that this is also what the LORD says: ‘In the place where the dogs
licked up the blood of
Naboth, there also the dogs will
lick up your blood—
yes, yours!’”
And
Ahab said to
Elijah, Hast thou found me, O mine enemy? And he answered, I
have found thee: because thou hast sold
thyself to work evil in the sight of the LORD.
When
Elijah arrived,
Ahab said to him, “So you
have found me out, my enemy.” He replied, “I
have found you out because you
have sold
yourself to do evil in the sight of the LORD.
I will make your house like that of
Jeroboam son of Nebat and like that of
Baasha son of
Ahijah, because you
have provoked My anger and caused Israel to sin.’
Seest thou how
Ahab humbleth himself before me? because he humbleth himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days: but in his son’s days will I bring the evil upon his house.
“
Have you seen how
Ahab has humbled himself before Me? Because he has humbled himself before Me, I will not bring the
calamity during his days, but I will bring it upon his house in the days of his son.”
And the king of Israel said unto his servants, Know ye that
Ramoth in
Gilead is ours, and we be still, and take it not out of the hand of the king of Syria?
who said to his servants, “Do you not know that
Ramoth-
gilead is ours, but we
have failed to take it from the hand of the king of
Aram?”
And
Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah made him horns of iron: and he said, Thus saith the LORD, With these shalt thou
push the Syrians, until thou
have consumed them.
Now
Zedekiah son of Chenaanah had made for himself iron horns and declared, “This is what the LORD says: ‘With these you shall
gore the Arameans until they are finished off.’”
And he said, I saw all Israel scattered upon the hills, as sheep that
have not a
shepherd: and the LORD said, These
have no master: let them return every man to his house in peace.
So Micaiah declared: “I saw all Israel scattered on the hills like sheep without a
shepherd. And the LORD said, ‘These people
have no master; let each one return home in peace.’”
And when the messengers turned back unto him, he said unto them, Why are ye now turned back?
When the messengers returned to the king, he asked them, “Why have you returned?”
And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD,
Forasmuch as thou hast sent messengers to
enquire of
Baal-
zebub the god of
Ekron, is it not because there is no God in Israel to
enquire of his word? therefore thou shalt not come down off that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.
And
Elijah said to King
Ahaziah, “This is what the LORD says: Is there really no God in Israel for you to inquire of His word? Is that why you
have sent messengers to inquire of
Baal-
zebub, the god of
Ekron? Therefore you will not get up from the bed on which you are lying. You will surely die.”
And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.
“You
have requested a difficult thing,” said
Elijah. “Nevertheless, if you see me as I am taken from you, it will be yours. But if not, then it will not be so.”
And they said unto him, Behold now, there be with thy servants fifty strong men; let them go, we pray thee, and seek thy master: lest
peradventure the Spirit of the LORD hath taken him up, and cast him upon some mountain, or into some valley. And he said, Ye shall not send.
“Look now,” they said to
Elisha, “we your servants
have fifty
valiant men. Please let them go and search for your master. Perhaps the Spirit of the LORD has taken him up and put him on one of the mountains or in one of the valleys.” “Do not send them,”
Elisha replied.
And he went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast the salt in there, and said, Thus saith the LORD, I
have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or barren land.
and
Elisha went out to the spring, cast the salt into it, and said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘I
have healed this water. No longer will it cause death or unfruitfulness.’”
So the waters were
healed unto this day, according to the saying of
Elisha which he spake.
And the waters there
have been healthy to this day, according to the word spoken by
Elisha.
And
Elisha said unto the king of Israel, What
have I to do with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father, and to the prophets of thy mother. And the king of Israel said unto him,
Nay: for the LORD hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab.
Elisha, however, said to the king of Israel, “What
have we to do with each other? Go to the prophets of your father and of your mother!” “No,” replied the king of Israel, “for it is the LORD who has summoned these three kings to deliver them into the hand of Moab.”
And they said, This is blood: the kings are surely slain, and they
have smitten one another: now therefore, Moab, to the
spoil.
“This is blood!” they
exclaimed. “The kings
have clashed swords and slaughtered one another. Now to the
plunder, Moab!”
Then he took his eldest son that should
have reigned in his
stead, and offered him for a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great
indignation against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.
So he took his
firstborn son, who was to succeed him, and offered him as a burnt offering on the city wall. And there was great
fury against the Israelites, so they withdrew and returned to their own land.
And
Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine
handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.
“How can I help you?” asked
Elisha. “Tell me, what do you
have in the house?” She answered, “Your servant has nothing in the house but a
jar of oil.”
And it fell on a day, that
Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she
constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as
oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread.
One day
Elisha went to Shunem, and a prominent woman who lived there persuaded him to
have a meal. So whenever he would pass by, he would stop there to eat.
And he said unto him, Say now unto her, Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care; what is to be done for thee? wouldest thou be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of the host? And she answered, I dwell among mine own people.
and
Elisha said to Gehazi, “Now tell her, ‘Look, you
have gone to all this trouble for us. What can we do for you? Can we speak on your behalf to the king or the commander of the army?’” “I
have a home among my own people,” she replied.
And his
servitor said, What, should I set this before an hundred men? He said again, Give the people, that they may eat: for thus saith the LORD, They shall eat, and shall leave thereof.
But his servant asked, “How am I to set twenty
loaves before a hundred men?” “Give it to the people to eat,” said
Elisha, “for this is what the LORD says: ‘They will eat and
have some left over.’”
And he brought the letter to the king of Israel, saying, Now when this letter is come unto thee, behold, I
have therewith sent
Naaman my servant to thee, that thou mayest recover him of his
leprosy.
And the letter that he took to the king of Israel stated: “With this letter I am sending my servant
Naaman, so that you may cure him of his
leprosy.”
And it was so, when
Elisha the man of God had heard that the king of Israel had rent his clothes, that he sent to the king, saying, Wherefore hast thou rent thy clothes? let him come now to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel.
Now when
Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had
torn his clothes, he sent a message to the king: “Why
have you
torn your clothes? Please let the man come to me, and he will know that there is a prophet in Israel.”
Are not
Abana and
Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a
rage.
Are not the Abanah and
Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not
have washed in them and been
cleansed?” So he turned and went away in a
rage.
